A solemn reminder Legion president ‘humbled’ by Remembrance Day turnout

Gaven Crites Free Press

Much like the innumerable ceremonies in communities across the country on Monday, the gathering in 100 Mile House on Nov. 11 was a solemn one. Hundreds crowded the 100 Mile Community Hall, lined its walls, even stood in the cold outside its doors, as a Remembrance Day ceremony, organized by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #260, reminded folks about the sacrifice, loss and pain of wars, Bob Wangensteen past and present. The Eclectica Community Choir sang throughout the hour-long observance, pausing for speeches and two minutes of silence. Visible in the crowd during that time were somber moments of heartfelt reflection. A parade down Birch Avenue preceded the ceremony. Spectators watched quietly and snapped the occasional photo before following the marchers into the hall. Branch #260 president Bob Wangensteen said he was humbled and honoured by the turnout. Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett also addressed the crowd. She talked about “freedoms we sometimes forget to be thankful for” and how “we’re lucky” to have Canadians today willing to defend them. “We have so much to be thankful for,” Barnett added. “Don’t forget the veterans who need our help.”

Fred Peeters lowered his head for a moment of silence and Lana Johnson wiped away tears during a Remembrance Day ceremony at the 100 Mile Community Hall in 100 Mile House on Nov. 11. Johnson’s daughter, Shardae Johnson, is a member of the Canadian Armed Forces stationed in Shilo, Manitoba.
