They’re a little late this season, but the salmon are returning to Burnaby’s creeks. And while local streamkeepers aren’t breaking out the fishing poles just yet, they’re encouraged the years of work they’ve been doing to create welcoming habitats for spawning coho and chum is making some headway. Byrne Creek streamkeepers counted more than 20 coho salmon heading upstream over the Remembrance Day weekend. “This is the best year for coho in ages,” said Paul Cipywnyk. But the numbers for returning chum aren’t so great. So far only three have caught the eye of streamkeepers monitoring the creek just before it passes into a culvert beneath Southridge Drive. But one of those showed signs it may have spawned before it died. Streamkeepers remove dead salmon from the creek to give them a quick assessment of their internal organs for signs of disease and to check whether females are carrying eggs or have dispatched them.
