BAG INSIDE REMEMBRANCE DAY 2013

A time to honour, help Ceremonies in Parksville, Qualicum Beach, and Bowser each attract hundreds of residents JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com

From the young to the old, the decorated to the thankful, hundreds of residents participated in Remembrance Day ceremonies at three locations in our region Monday. Cloudy but fair weather greeted those who paid their respects to the fallen and remember the sacrifices of all at ceremonies in Bowser, Qualicum Beach and Parksville. In Bowser, Legion Padre Bernie Thompson asked people to never forget those who gave their lives and served in many conflicts of the past. He also urged people to think of those who may have returned in the recent past from service in Afghanistan, service men and women who may be struggling with post traumatic stress disorder. A military-style fly-by had heads looking skyward just before the ceremonies began and the Bowser Legion Branch was filled to capacity with members of the public after the laying of the wreaths. Meanwhile, the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre was filled to standing-room-only levels Monday as the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 76 joined those across the country marking Remembrance Day at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. The rain held off on the appropriately grey day as veterans and supporters marched from the downtown to the civic centre where ceremonies were held, before marching back to the Legion for refreshments and camaraderie. The Last Post and Reveille in Qualicum Beach were performed by KSS trumpeter Dave Stewart and the parade salute was accepted on behalf of all veterans by Command Chief Warrant Officer (ret.) Lee Faulkner. Susan Boyce sang O Canada and God Save the Queen and event master of ceremonies was Comrade Don Taylor. In Parksville, a large crowd paused and bowed their heads for a moment’s reflection at the cenotaph to remember all of the brave men and women who courageously volunteered for the cause of freedom and peace. The silence was broken by the sounding of The Last Post. See STORIES SHARED, page A3

Watching the ceremonies in Parksville with a youngster, 93-year-old Lloyd Fraser of Parksville served as Sergeant Major in the army artillery during the Second World War. Fraser, who recently moved to Trillium Lodge, used to reside in a home behind Parksville Elementary School and for years would be the guest speaker at the school Remembrance Day assembly, where he would share some of his experiences of his tour of duty. stArtinG Point New priority for Oceanside arts council All is well at the MAC. Those were the words of Dave Klinger, member and former vice president of the Oceanside Community Arts Council, which owns the McMillan Arts Centre. In a letter to members and users of the MAC following a meeting on November 4, Klinger said the OCAC’s focus on the arts in Oceanside has new priority. There will be active and expanded coordination, development and promotion of the arts within the Oceanside area, as well as the crucial responsibility of operating The MAC as a viable and contributing arts centre, he said in the letter. All bookings in place will run as planned and the OCAC will shortly have a new interim Board of Directors until its regular board elections at the May 2014 Annual General Meeting. Stay tuned for more coverage on the MAC and its new direction coming up in The NEWS. —NEWS Staff

Stories shared at the Legion ContinuEd from page a1

The traditional trumpet call commemorating the war dead was performed by Nick Rivers of Parksville. Rivers has been playing his trumpet for the Parksville Remembrance Day ceremony for five years now and said it was an honour to be chosen for such an important tradition. He said he was not only paying honor to all veterans who have served, but to his grandfather who was in the navy in WW II. Many of those gathered in Parksville were young and the few on hand who actually fought in the Second World War proudly

wore their dress uniforms and medals of honour. Many of their stories were shared afterwards at the Parksville Legion Branch 49, where retired military personnel and their families gathered for a lunch provided by Save-On-Foods at Wembley Mall. Since 1990, employees of the store have rolled up their sleeves to serve veterans lunch on Remembrance Day and to show gratitude to those who made sacrifices for our freedom. — With files from Auren Ruvinsky and Brenda Gough

A garage/workshop was destroyed in a fire Wednesday night near the French Creek bridge — and things could have been a lot worse. Firefighters arrived on the scene just after 8 p.m.. “Basically, we were faced with a huge ball of flame,” said Tyrone Heigh, assistant chief with the Parksville Volunteer Fire Department. More than 25 firefighters from Parksville, Qualicum Beach and Errington attended the blaze. The official address is 1266 West Island Highway, but the structure is not really visible

The Board of Education of School District 69 looks forward to a regular opportunity to engage with interested parties in focused conversation on topics relating to the future of education in our community. To that end, a series of conversations “Towards a Future for Schools” have been scheduled on the second Thursday of each month in the Library at Oceanside Middle School from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The November 14th presentation is from the Business/Operations Leadership Team (BOLT) which will speak to Budget, Transportation, and Facilities in relation to the District’s Strategic Plan as well as current and future budget challenges.

from 19A. There was no estimate provided on the value of the structure and it took about 20 minutes for crews to get the fire under control. When they reached the “fully involved” structure, what was visible had the potential for big-time trouble, said Heigh. Just outside the door of the garage were seven 20-pound propane tanks. Heigh said crews immediately, and continuously, hosed the tanks down to avoid an explosion. One firefighter stepped on a nail, but other than that there were no injuries, said Heigh, who also commented on the cause of the blaze. “We don’t know what the exact cause was,” said Heigh. “We know where the fire started, but we don’t know what the ignition was.”

We shall T Remember

he residents of this region do Remembrance Day well. Hundreds of people turned out for ceremonies in each of Parksville, Qualicum Beach and Bowser on Monday. There were young people and older people, veterans and families, Legion members and many others who wanted to pay their respects and do their part in remembering the great sacrifices made by so many Canadians in conflicts all over the globe. While there can be an understandably sombre aspect to these ceremonies, the sheer number of people who participated could be seen as a sign the residents of Parksville Qualicum Beach will always remember, and keep alive this Canadian tradition. Tritan Legge received a commendation from PVFD assistant chief Tyrone Heigh last Wednesday.

night manager Terry Farrington, a relatively new employee for really taking control of the situation and doing all the right things. “Unfortunately more often than not when we arrive at an incident like that people are just hanging out on their balconies and say they don’t see smoke,” Heigh said, “so it was great to see something done so well, it was picture perfect and we wanted to recognize that.” A couple hours later a young family on Pioneer Crescent plugged in a heater for the first time this season and soon had sparks and smoke in their house.

Emergency education results show in two incidents

Parksville Volunteer Fire Department asst. chief Tyrone Heigh handed out a couple commendations last week for quick thinking and organization during emergency events. “We do all this community education, but the effects are really hard to quantify, we don’t get a lot of chances to see results like this,” said Heigh of the actions of a 10-year-old and the Quality Resort Bayside staff in separate incidents last Monday. Around 6:45 p.m. an alarm went off at the Parksville resort and there were reports of the smell of smoke. There wasn’t a fire, but it turned out to be a perfect emergency drill. “By the time we got here the staff had cleared the hotel and had everyone organized in the parking lot,” he said explaining they had everyone from 59 rooms of full, mostly double occupancy, guests accounted for. Front office manager Darrelle Jesperson, who accepted the award on behalf of the entire staff, specifically praised

Ten year old Tritan Legge — who’d been through some of Heigh’s in-school fire prevention training — went next door to call 911 and was able to quickly give the address. “He did exactly what he was supposed to,” Heigh explained while presenting Legge with a plaque in front of his Springwood Middle School class. “I’m very proud and impressed with the great job he did,” Heigh said, who added luckily the whole family was fire prepared and along with a working smoke alarm his mother had a fire extinguisher and the fire was out by the time the fire department arrived.

The Child Haven International fundraiser at the Parksville Conference Centre October 25, was a great success according to Cilla Lewenhaupt who helped with the event. Formerly called Sojourn to India, the fundraiser for children and women in developing countries in need of food, education, health care, shelter and more, has been running for 19 years in Parksville. Founded by Bonnie and Fred Cappuccino, the event almost didn’t go ahead this year, but a group of volunteers decided to make it happen and changed things up a bit. Cilla said with more music and entertainment as well as lower ticket prices they attracted a big crowd. They are still counting the money but are confident the total raised was close to previous years, and are grateful for the $500 donation from the Rotary club in Qualicum Beach. Exciting plans are being hatched for the 2014 Brant Festival, which will kick off with an opening night hosted by The Nature Trust of BC at the Quality Bayside Resort in Parksville on March 1. The Arrowsmith Naturalists will bring their viewing scopes and their birding knowledge for Brant in the Bay at Parksville Community Park. The Parksville Museum will be hosting guest speakers and are looking at offering nature art workshops and an art/photo contest for kids. VIU’s shellfish research centre in Deep Bay will be holding an open house and will once again offer herring spawn boat tours. The North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre in Errington will host an eagle release in April. Any other groups or organizations that might like to host events during the festival are welcome to get in touch with the Nature Trust. Budding artists in Oceanside had an opportunity to chat with renowned Tofino artist Mark Hobson, who was at the Island Arts Expo November 2 and 3. Some 800 people attended the event which featured an art show and sale, workshops and demonstrations. The fundraiser for the food bank generated $1650.00 and 418 lbs. of groceries. There were some great shopping opportunities at the 12th annual World Craft Bazaar at Knox United Church November 2. Items included fair trade products and ethical treasures, with proceeds going to improve the lives of less fortunate around the world. One of the charities included Aldea Maya, a non profit grassroots organization working in Guatemala to assist the indigenous Mayans. Students in District 69 have been assisting with Aldea Maya’s mission since 2008 by designing holiday Christmas Cards. Prices for the cards range from $15 to $50 and each one helps support education, nutrition and garden projects. The cards will be for sale November 22, 23 and 24, at the Winterfest Craft Fair at the Parksville Conference Centre. There was an overwhelming turn out for the Prairie Fowl Dinner on November 2 in the Arrowsmith Hall on the Coombs Fairgrounds. Both seatings for the turkey dinner were sold out. Proceeds from the event go to community programs sponsored by the Arrowsmith Agricultural Association. The next dinner is Saturday, March 1, 2014.

Child Haven International founder Fred Cappuccino enjoyed some traditional Indian finger foods served by Shilby Mathew, one of the sari girls during a fundraiser for his charity at the Parksville Conference Centre October 25.

The Brant geese won’t be arriving here until the spring but organizers from the Nature Trust of BC were in Parksville October 29, to get the ball rolling for the 2014 Brant festival. (left to right) Robin Rivers, Tim Clermont and Deb Kennedy enjoy the view at the Quality Bayside Resort where the gala will take place March 1.

Four year old Aislinn Welburn dressed as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, enjoyed the kids’ games at Corcarnival Halloween night. Cathy Edge was one of the many volunteers who helped with the event hosted by the Corcan and Meadowood Residents Association and the Dashwood Volunteer Fire Department.

Jolene Aarbo of Sutton Whitecap Realty in Parksville who is also a fledgling artist, was excited to meet renowned Canadian painter Mark Hobson at the Island Arts Expo November 2, at the Lighthouse Community Hall. More than 20 West coast artists were at the two day event.

Two year old Ameila Graham of French Creek admired the colourful trinkets and other fair trade goods at the Knox United Church World Craft Bazaar November 2. Proceeds from items sold at the fair help improve the lives of underprivileged people around the world.

13 year old Rya Harach was one of the many 4-H club members who served guests at the annual Coombs Prairie Fowl Dinner November 2. It was the first time Fraser and Joyce Rose of Qualicum Beach attended the popular event at the Coombs Fairgrounds.

Toronto mayor needs help

D

ude, get some help. Canada’s largest city has a leadership crisis. Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has admitted smoking crack and almost every day some new, embarrassing revelation comes to light. On Thursday it was a video of an expletive-filled rant. Who knows what’s next. The late-night talk show hosts south of the border have a had a field day with this story. To us, the story is not funny. Not sure it ever was. What does this have to do with Parksville Qualicum Beach? Not a lot, perhaps. It does remind us, however, how fortunate we are to have the leaders we do, despite the philosophical disagreements we see every week around council tables in the region. Ed Mayne is a former Parksville mayor, and he grew up not far from Toronto. Once in a while he listens to Rob Ford’s radio show through the Internet. “You know, he’s not a dummy when it comes to most things,” said Mayne. “But his personal life is a train wreck.” The Ford saga may be a relevant story for all of the country, considering the influence Hogtown has in national circles. “The mayor of Toronto has more power than the premier of, say, Saskatchewan,” said Mayne. “I’m not picking on Saskatchewan, I’m talking size alone, population, budget-wise.” Is this the worst kind of behaviour by a mayor Mayne can remember? How about the Montreal/Laval men tossed from office in corruption cases? “That’s almost honourable compared to what this (Ford) is,” said Mayne. West of Kenora, actually, west of North Bay, Toronto isn’t the most loved city. We’ve heard it has something to do with the perception that Hogtowners believe they reside in the centre of the universe, or something like that. Or perhaps it’s because it is the media centre of the Canadian universe, which sticks in the craw of westerners. One thing is for sure, regardless of the city: you get what you deserve when you cast your vote. In that vein, we leave the last word to Mayne: “That’s the same group of people who elected Mel Lastman four times.” — Editorial by John Harding

Letters sticker for mr. black This letter is directed to your columnist Arthur Black in reference to his most recent column in The NEWS. On behalf of all Legionnaires, we are so sorry that you continue to struggle with our poppy pins. We are right in the middle of our annual fundraising campaign, and as you know it is a busy time. Our 152 branches have volunteers far and wide collecting vital funds supporting our veterans and youth programs. However, we did want to give some thought to your views and are happy to respond. We appreciate people donating generously several times. It isn’t lost on us that seatbelts and scarves regularly wreak havoc on unsuspecting straight pins and poppies. Call it genius if you will, we consider it an opportunity for people to have poppies on every jacket they own. We have heard the call of Canadians on this issue, so this year, we have a great solution. You can get a “poppy keeper” for the end of your pin which acts not unlike the back of an earring and holds it in place. This ensures stable attachment, and less trips to the donation jar to get more poppies. We are hoping that this innovation helps folks like you feel a little happier with your poppy. We also like to see Canadians give generously for their first poppy, because now they don’t have to keep coming back for more. As for our inability to innovate, we are ahead of you on this one! If you don’t carry cash, you can text a donation on your cell by sending the word POPPY to 20222 generating a $5 direct donation on your cell bill. We have been giving some thought to your personal straight pin injury issues Mr.

“Our Glorious Dead.” These are the words carved in stone at the foot of this war memorial. I stand here in the cold morning air and think about my grandfather and father who endured battle during both the First and Second World Wars. Both of them returned home with scars and a deep, shame-filled belief that there are no glorious dead, no heroes and that the value of sacrifice is worthy of question. These beliefs kept them silent throughout their lives. As we remember our glorious war dead and their selfless sacrifice on our collective behalf, we unwittingly glorify war itself. We can deny this, but it remains so. As a civilization, our history is a violent and waring one; not by some natural reason, but by our inability to deeply question and debate this history. And so we find ourselves at this place and time of remembrance and the opportunity I believe we should take to say loudly: War is the reflection of the collective failure of civilized people.

Re: Nov. 5 NEWS letter by Jim Bergot (‘QB needs to negotiate wages’). The wages of our employees should never be the subject of a citizen’s attack. It is important that we pay our employees the best possible wage, as a living wage creates healthy communities. There are many corporations and government bodies that see the wages of the worker as the place to cut. In fact, the expenditure of our tax dollars needs to be examined. The installation of self check at our local library is one such example. How does this save us money? The purchase of these machines remove our community tax dollars and in most instances send them offshore. If we employ people, we generate more money from our tax dollars, as these monies are spent here for mortgages, food, fuel and other living expenses — these create new jobs and so on. These machines will need maintenance and upgrading so we will have an ongoing removal of our money. In this time of change from an industrial to a technology age, we need to have transition measures to ensure that we don’t create an impoverished society, as was witnessed during the industrial age. As a citizen there are many ways to take part in the transition. The recent imposing of the one and only corporation that will receive our recycling, is an example of when we as citizens need to voice our outrage at who and at what cost our money will be extracted from us. The ongoing, never-ending projects that extract money from our province and our country is where outrage needs to be directed, not at our own citizens.

Anderson back in town for CD release Beth Marie has returned from Nashville for her concert November 16 and will visit schools LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com

Local country songstress Beth Marie Anderson just arrived back from another trip to Nashville and this one was her most productive yet, she said. “I have had some extremely encouraging meetings with some important people,” she said. Anderson is having a CD Release show in Parksville on Saturday, November 16 and tickets include a copy of her new album, Let it Go. Anderson arrived in Nashville on October 20 and since then she’s had two co-writing sessions a day, and has written 18 new songs. She’s performed at a number of venues around the country music capital, including The Commodore Grill, Back Alley Diner, Belcourt Taps, Hotel Indigo, and some house concerts. She has recorded a few songs which she’ll be pitching to other artists, and one called Be Brave has seen interest from Non Profit Organizations. Her Christmas song, Merry Christmas to Me was selected for a Christmas compilation CD in Nashville and also a compilation CD that will be sent to Canadian troops stationed overseas. Donations for that Christmas album will go back to the troops and their families. Her recent trip to Nashville also had her collaborating with other music artists including Patricia Conroy and Emerson Drive’s Danick Dupelle. Anderson is pumped about her release show at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre on November 16, saying the town hasn’t seen her perform a big, full-band concert like this for three years. She’ll be performing songs off her new album and some brand new ones just penned in Nashville, as well as a few from her previous album. Anderson said people can expect a completely different sound from her first album. “It’s more edgy, more focused on songwriting, a little more country-rock with a bit of blues thrown in there. This new album really showcases how my voice has changed, how I've grown as a songwriter and where I am headed as an artist,” she said.

Forbes heads back to the hall Renowned folk singer has headlined most major Canadian folk festivals Legendary Canadian folk singer Roy Forbes is coming back to the Errington Hall for a performance November 16. Forbes, originally from Dawson Creek, B.C., has toured Canada and the United States extensively for the past three decades. Forbes has headlined most of the major folk music festivals in Canada and opened for bands like Supertramp, Three Dog Night, Jeff Beck and Santana. He has also produced other artists including Connie Kaldor, Mark Perry, Cindy Church and most recently, Blu Hopkins. He did his first film score in the early ‘90s (Nettie Wild’s Blockade) and continues to work in that field — his most recent soundtrack being the CBC-TV documentary Stand Up Samurais. Forbes gives back to his community by participating as a resource leader at songwriting workshops across Canada, an offshoot of his work with the Songwriters Association of Canada. He currently sits on the board of that organization. The show in Errington starts at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16 and tickets are $20. Pick them up at Cranky Dog Music in Parksville, Heaven on Earth in Qualicum Beach or at the Errington Store. Children 12 and under are $5 at the door and 5-and-unders are free. Celebrating 20 Years

✁

Are you tired of feeling saggy, lumpy, pinched or strained? Well you’re not alone. As you’ve probably seen on Oprah or read in women’s magazines, over 80 per cent of all women wear the wrong size bra. Here’s where Barb Chapman, the Bra Lady, comes in.

Enjoy Limited Time Anniversary Menu

Chapman is coming to PARKSVILLE ON WEDNESDAY NOV. 27TH to outfit you with the best possible bra for your body. Chapman

3 Course Meal Roast Duckling Veal Jager Schnitzel New Zealand Braised Lamb Shank Pacific Seafood Fettucine Free Range Chicken Breast “Kiev” Sockeye Salmon “Wellington”

said she will be seeing clients on a one-on-one basis, explaining the benefits of good bras and measuring their bodies properly.

“Most women just want to find a good-fitting bra that’s not uncomfortable,” Chapman said. “What they don’t realize is that a good support bra is also important for blood circulation and enhanced lymph drainage.”

✁

Chapman has over 200 bra sizes available for ordering, ranging from 30AA to 52KK. It’s likely that you’ll fit somewhere between those sizes. She offers these questions for women to ask themselves: • Do you have a drawer full of bras but none that fit comfortably? • Does your bust line “bounce” when you walk while wearing your “everyday” bra? • Do you overflow the cup of your bra? • Do your bra straps slip off your shoulders or dig into your shoulders leaving red and painful marks? • Does your bra ride up in the back because you tighten the straps to give you added support? • Have you ever begun an exercise class only to drop out because your breasts ached from lack of support while jumping or running? If you answer yes to any of these you are in need of a new bra, and a custom one could be the way to go.

Sports Field Reopens

Muzzling of Vicious Dogs

Following major rehabilitation, the Community Park sports field is now open for general use by the public. League games and tournaments will continue to be played at Springwood Park until the spring.

We wish to remind the public according to the City’s animal control bylaw, the fine for an unmuzzled vicious dog is $500 for the first offence. Informational signage has been installed at the dog park and the public has been notified about the importance of muzzling vicious dogs. Because of the number of recent serious incidents and to protect the public, enforcement of this bylaw is now a priority.

2013 is a significant year for the Community Park. It is 90 years since the Parksville Women’s Institute purchased the park from Joe Hirst and it is the 50th anniversary of the City’s ownership of the park.

On Saturday, November 16 and Sunday, November 17, Parksville firefighters will be going door to door in the Parksville Fire Protection Area to collect food and toys. Grocery bags for the food drive will be provided by Quality Foods in this week’s local newspapers. If you are not home this weekend between 9 am and 4 pm, please leave the bag in a carport or by the door to be collected by firefighters. Volunteers may not get to every household and if missed, bring non-perishable food items and/or new, unwrapped toys to the Parksville Fire Hall. Donations of cash are also welcome. The community generously supports the Parksville Fire Department annual food and toy drive and this generosity is the reason for its success. Any support residents are able to give is appreciated by the PVFD and will make a difference to families this holiday season.

Highway 19A Snow Closures In the event of a significant snowfall, Highway 19A between Corfield and McCarter will be closed when residents will use the slope from the highway down into the Community Park for tobogganing. The City will use traffic control measures to indicate the lane closure.

Sunray Stairs Work Near Completion Work continues on final bracing and platform treads for the Sunray staircase. When this work is finished, the City will complete final landscaping and the path to the beach. The public will be notified when the stairs are open for use.

Keeping Egg Laying Hens Workshop THINGS TO KNOW... On November 14, the City will host a workshop about the keeping of egg laying hens in Parksville. The workshop will be held at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre with 4H Club members available to share information and hands on instruction on the proper care of chickens. If interested in keeping laying hens, we encourage you to attend this informative care and husbandry workshop, free of charge. Drop by anytime between 3 pm and 5 pm. Information pertaining to accessory household hen keeping may be found in the City’s Zoning and Development Bylaw, 2013, No. 2000.85 or by contacting the Community Planning Department at 250 954-3061. Three: an abstract art show

An exhibition at TOSH by local artists tells stories from within LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com

There are three sides to every story according to the three artists currently exhibiting at The Old School House Arts Centre. The show is called Three, and includes three different abstract points of view from local artists Diane McCarten, Leslie Gregory and Chris Kazeil. Besides their own bright and captivating pieces, the artists have made a wall of collaborative paintings. This summer they laid down 12 blank canvasses in a row and drew a horizontal line and some connecting shapes across them. They then numbered the backs of each one and took home four each, to work on with the same limited palette of colours. The three artists assembled the 12 pieces in the original order on

the wall at TOSH for the show, and the result is a cohesive group of paintings, all very different in nature. Leslie Gregory took her first abstract course from Diane McCarten three years ago and continues to enjoy the art form. “I love abstract because it allows you to find things within yourself and there's always a surprise,” she said. Gregory recently took first place in the Federation of Canadian Artists’ local Fall Juried Show. Her pieces in the exhibition at TOSH are all inspired by music, which she listens to while painting. She has named some of the bold, colourful pieces Scarborough Fair, Summer in the City and Piano Man. See abStract art, page A27

jelly bean-less jar: Nicolas Teves won the Jelly Bean Jar contest at the Qualicum Beach Museum at the end of September. His guess was only two off the actual total of jelly beans. Here he shows how he’s successfully emptied the jar.

Abstract art ‘realistic’ continued from page a25

Kazeil started painting abstract in 2008. “It was like an epiphany for me and then I took some courses from Diane and I haven’t looked back.” Today, McCarten is her mentor in the art form, she said. Kazeil said she gets lost in the process of telling stories with colour and shapes and feels the whole process is very cathartic. In the exhibition at TOSH her series is whimsical and colourful using acrylic, india ink and watercolour pencils. McCarten started painting abstract art back in the early ‘90s and has taught art and exhibited in Canada, USA, Holland, Denmark and Malta.

She said she likes abstract because it is challenging and she discovers new things all the time. “It seems more real to me than realistic art, it’s less of a lie,” she said. Her pieces in the TOSH show are mostly acrylic with some charcoal line work and in some cases, a water-soluble crayon. One piece was painted without a paintbrush, simply using her hand and a squeegee and another was painted on her patio in the summer. The eye-catching exhibition is up at TOSH until November 19. For more on TOSH visit www.theoldschoolhouse.org or call 250-752-6133.

Beach Flicks show November 15 Beach Flicks is presenting Hit N’ Strum this Friday, November 15. Filmed in Vancouver, the story surrounds a beautiful Vancouver career-woman who commits a hit-and-run. She then hears the victim, a scruffy street busker, strumming his guitar the next day on the sidewalk. She is transfixed by

his talent and reaches out to him. A remarkable friendship is born. The show begins at 7 p.m., at the Eaglecrest Golf Course, doors open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $6. Find more on Beach Flicks at www.beachflicks.ca or find them on Facebook. —NEWS Staff/Submitted by Luba Plotnikoff

SCHOOL DISTRICT 69

New buses purchased Through its annual fleet renewal program, the provincial government announced it is providing School District No. 69 with $143,259 for the purchase of two new school buses, including one which is wheelchair accessible. The Qualicum School District will purchase one bus capable of carrying 25-30 passengers and a second bus capable of transporting fewer than 24 passengers, said the province. The government said the Ministry of Education has worked with the Association of School Transportation Services of B.C. to procure school buses using the Standing Offer Pricing model. Contractors, independent schools and First Nations schools are also able to take advantage of this pricing which the government said has resulted in savings of 10 to 15 per cent each year and saves districts significant administrative and staff time. — NEWS Staff/B.C. government

Rotarians Susan Mielke and Audrey Bartell — to Africa in service of Rotary.

“Service Above Self” is the motto for Rotarians worldwide, and the members of the Rotary clubs of Parksville and Qualicum Beach practise these words both at home and abroad. Rotary briefs: There are opportunities to help local families through the

A good ending to a terrible tale of travel to the U.S. Every now and then, we read or hear about a travel insurance claim not being paid by a Canadian life insurance company and in most cases not all the information was provided by the insured thus giving the insurer the right to deny the claim. What we don’t often hear about are the stories behind the millions of dollars that are paid out annually by Canadian life insurance companies in successful travel insurance claims. This is one of those stories. I have a retired client called Ed. In June, 2011 Ed and a few friends decided to go on a motorcycle trip to the U.S.A. It was a beautiful day in June when Ed was leading the group of friends near Garfield, Utah when the unexpected happened. A deer jumped out of the ditch displacing Ed off his motorcycle. As you can well imagine, Ed hit the road with tremendous force. Ed lost consciousness and was lying on the side of the road. All traffic stopped. Fortunately for Ed, trav-

elling a few cars behind the bikers was pital for observation and then returned an ER doctor and nurse on their way to home to Errington. The first bit of good work. The doctor and nurse provided the news about this story is that Ed has fully recovered. The second part best care they could while of the good news is that Ed waiting for the ambulance purchased travel insurance to arrive. from Salt Lake City, these were first class tickets and the cost undisclosed by the insurance company. For their information Ed and his wife continue to receive copies of bills in the mail that have been paid by the insurance company. Ed and his wife estimate that the total cost of this episode will be close to $200,000. What this story clearly teaches us is that even if we are crossing the border for a short shopping trip or to catch a sporting event we should always make sure we are covered for any unforeseen eventualities. NOV. 30 at the COMMUNItY CeNtRe

Funk to make you move and raise some money for PCCC AUREN RUVINSKY

writer@pqbnews.com

Former Parksville mayor Ed Mayne and friends are performing a fundraising concert and dance at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre Nov. 30, with all funds going towards new chairs for the facility. Eddie and the Funk get together about once a week to practice and have fun, Mayne told council on Monday, and they perform a few times a year, always for charity. “We will be playing old time rock’n roll — very old — with an emphasis on vocals, a little bit of country and even a couple

new songs,” he said as he invited council to the show. The band has nine members including three lead singers and three others that can sing lead, meaning they do a lot of heavy vocal pieces, including tunes from The Eagles, Mammas and Papas and other “good old classics.” “All the music’s been picked to get you moving, get your toes tapping. The idea is to have a good time.” Mayne said they never take money from their performances, other than recovering some of their costs. Their last show was a fundraiser for the Tour de

Rock which sold out 350 tickets at the PCCC. Parksville council unanimously decided to buy a table of tickets, pointing out the money essentially goes back to the city, in the form of an improvement to their facility. The group includes some members from Nanaimo and a number of well known locals including Lori Koop, Cliff Reynolds, Mark McGorman and Cam MacLean. Tickets are $15 each, $135 for a table of 10, available through any member of the band, www.facebook.com/EddieandtheFunk and the PCCC.

DEATHS

DEATHS

Wells (Blunden), Marjorie Evelyn (nee Thomson) February 14, 1932 – November 5, 2013 With deepest sorrow, we announce the passing of our mother, Marj. Born in Berwyn, AB, Marj moved with her family throughout much of the 30s and 40s, living in small towns such as Mirror, Lacombe, and Fort Macleod. Marj settled in Calgary in the 50s to raise her own family. Her love of the ocean drew her to the Qualicum Bay area in 1980, where she worked in real estate and was awarded Top 100 Relator for Vancouver Island several years running. She also owned and operated the Sea Flame Beach Resort from 1980 to 1988, before moving to Bowser and then on to Parksville. Marj settled on Salt Spring Island in 2011. It’s impossible to convey everything about this extraordinary woman in just a few short lines. She was an innovator – a professional woman in a time when other women stayed home. She lived life on her own terms and pursued a multitude of interests and hobbies. She was tireless. She worked, cooked, cleaned, sewed, washed, waxed, gardened and still managed to find time to practice Judo, sunbathe, read, and take photography lessons. As children growing up in her household, we wanted for and feared nothing; each of us growing with the same will and determined independence demonstrated by our mother. Marj is predeceased by her parents, Reverend Leonard and (Jenny) Evelyn Thompson and her younger brother (Bill) William. She will be sorely missed by her brothers Harold, Lawrence, and Danny and by her children, Sheri Nielson (Salt Spring Island), Joe Blunden (Calgary), Lori Haywood (Cochrane), and Karli Blunden (Bowser). She also leaves behind five step-children, Danny Blunden, Vicki Wearmouth (Blunden), and Lance, Kent, and Mark Wells. Her six adoring grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren will miss her tenacious nature and candid observations. Much appreciation and respect for the wonderful staff at Lady Minto Hospital on Salt Spring Island. You helped smooth the path for the ultimate journey. Thank you. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Lady Minto Hospital Foundation, or give your mother something nice. A memorial page has been created for family and friends. Go to http://haywardsfuneral. com and click on “The Book of Memories to send condolences and share memories of Marj.

JV Whalers beat Roadrunners 34-13 Meanwhile, 4 senior players have been named provincial AA Western Conference All-Stars Brenda GouGh NEWS contributor

The Ballenas Whalers are proving they are a force to be reckoned with on the gridiron as B.C. high school football playoffs heat up. Spirits are high for the Whalers football club after an impressive win by the juniors in the first round of playoffs and a group of seniors were selected as Western Conference All-Stars. The JV Whalers beat the defending AA champions the Mission Roadrunners with a convincing 34-13 victory at Merle Logan Turf Fields in Nanaimo Nov. 6. The JV Whalers were 6-2 overall and 3-1 in league play, tied with the Mt. Doug Rams for top spot in the five-team Island Division before taking to the field for their first playoff game. Going into the clash, the Whalers were determined to stay alive and knock off the Roadrunners, who were 2-5 and in sixth spot of the eight-team East Division. Coach Jeremy Conn said he wasn’t the only one impressed by the boys in blue. “They played good physical football and smart football. One of the referees even came over and said ‘wow coach these guys are performing really well’. That was nice to hear and it is a monkey off the back because Mission has beaten us twice in the semi-finals so to come out and be able to do that felt good.” He said it is great to be able to beat a program like Mission because they have been in four of the last championships and won two of those. “They are a very good program as I know first hand as their senior team has knocked us out of close games the last two years in the semi-finals. So to beat them like this feels pretty good. I am very proud of our kids who played smart and physical football.” The Whalers were challenged early as Mission drove the ball down to take a 7-0

lead. Ballenas responded as Brody Seselja capped off a long drive with a two yard dive. The Whalers never looked back as they took the lead 14-7 at the half and then led 28-7 before Mission responded to make it 28-13 and then the Whalers closed out the scoring 34-13. Matt Price led the way rushing 25 times for 236 yards and three TD runs of eight, 60 and 37 yards. Price also threw a 50 TD bomb to wide receiver Sam Paquette on a running back pass. Brenden Harstad was the leading receiver with two catches for 51 yards up the middle. While the defence did give up 13 points it was able to make several big stops and smother the Mission quarter-

back. Defensive Lineman Noah Wheatley had seven tackles, a QB sack, and scooped up a fumble and returned it 19 yards. Linebacker Steve Martin had seven tackles while Sam Paquette also added six tackles from the secondary. The JVs are in the top eight now and have some momentum going into playoff quarter finals Wednesday, Nov. 13 at Merle Logan where they will take on the Sequam Seahawks. Conn is also stoked that a number of his senior football players have been recognized for their hard work during the season. Four senior varsity players have been named provincial AA Western Confer-

ence All-Stars. Making the prestigious list were Scott Childs first selection receiver, Brock Mould first selection offensive lineman, Nick Cessford offensive lineman and Coltin Laplante defensive MVP. Conn said each of them are deserving of the recognition. “It is a good reflection of our record and our team achievements and the ability of our players and it’s neat because three of them were first ranked for their position which means they’ll get a head start on being Provincial All-Stars as well.” If they make that elite list they will have an opportunity to attend the All-Star awards banquet Nov. 26 in Vancouver.

Top-rated Cougars coming Saturday night After a tough home-andhome this past weekend with North Division rival Comox, the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League schedule doesn’t get any easier for the Save-On-Foods Oceanside Generals this Friday and Saturday. (For results and statistics from the games against Comox, please see Thursday’s edition of The NEWS.) The Generals travel to Campbell River on Friday night (a 6:30 p.m. start) to take on the Storm,

which now includes former Generals centre Domenic Kolbiens, a 17-year-old who was dealt to his hometown team shortly after coach Dan Lemmon and general manager Lou Gravel took over the reigns of the Oceanside club. Going into last weekend, the speedy, skilled Kolbiens had four goals and three assists in 20 games, including one assists in two games with the Storm. Campbell River (9-7-1-1, third place in the North — all numbers in this story are from prior to this

past weekend’s games) boasts one of the oldest, biggest and most productive forward lines in the league. Brandon deVries, Brayden Taekema and Jordan Kamprath are all 20 years old, over six-feet tall and have combined for 70 points in 17 games this season. The Generals are led offensively by Parksville product and team captain Travis Flug, 19, who had seven goals and 19 points in 20 games this season heading into last weekend’s play.

Sixteen-year-old Brodie Smith, also of Parksville, is next with 15 points in 20 games, sixth among all league rookies. The numbers really drop from there, with three 17 year-olds (Chase Gaudreault, Cory Burnett and Jonah Pearson) tied with six points each. Heading into last weekend, the Generals were in last place in the league with a record of two wins, 16 losses, a tie and an overtime loss. Half of the 22 non-goalies on the Generals’ roster did not start the season in

Oceanside. After playing in Campbell River this Friday night, the Generals return home for a tilt Saturday (puck drop at 7:30 p.m. at Oceanside Place) against the top team in the nine-club VIJHL, the Victoria Cougars, who took a 17-3 win-loss record into play last weekend. Their top scorers are 20-year-old Albertan Blake Roney (10-14-24) and 20-yearold Victoria product Mark Walton (12-11-23). — NEWS Staff

Oceanside forward Jarrett Weme goes to the net during his team’s regular season opening win over the Comox Chiefs.

MINOR HOCKEY

Midgets good out of gate Coach proud of team effort in home opener It’s early in the campaign but Oceanside’s Midget Rep Generals looked good out of the gate. The Generals opened their regular season at Meeker Arena recently with a well-earned 4-1 win over the Comox Chiefs. All Oceanside from the opening whistle and out of the gate for their first of 24 league games, the Generals went at the Chiefs in waves. Captain Jordan Freeman “played a great game” netting a goal and two assists. Fellow forward Luke Russi fed the net, and defensemen Dale Anderson and Austin Gibson each scored great goals from the point. “They were hard shots,” said Generals head coach Matt Woods. And with Mitchell MacDonald and Erik Carney on the sheet with an assist each “it was nice to see the points spread out through the team. Hayden Kellet was in net for the win. “I was really proud of how the boys played their home opener,” said Woods. “We played as a team, moved the puck well and outshot our opponents 38-15. We have a long

road ahead of us to prepare for the playoffs but the coaching staff, Glenn Gibson, Jim Hykaway and myself are really excited about this years midget team. They have a lot of potential to do very well this season,” he said of the squad, which competes in the seven team Tier 2 Island league. “As long as they believe in their abilities and work hard as a team, we believe that we can be very successful this season.” Back home on Sunday the Generals lost 5-3 to the Cowichan Valley Capitals in an exhibition game. “We came out flat this game and took too many penalties,” said coach Woods, pointing out four of Cowichan’s five goals were scored on the power play. “Hard to win games when half a period is spent short-handed.” Freeman had a goal and helper in that game; MacDonald and Austin Hykaway scored a goal each, and Liam Downey and Kurtis Woods had assists. — NEWS Staff

Cheap ski passes for children

Grade 4s and 5s can ski and snowboard at over 150 ski areas for $30

Ski areas across Canada are opening their hills to fourth and fifth graders, with an invitation to ski and snowboard all winter long. All you need is a Grade 4 & 5 SnowPass, which is a card offering three lift tickets at each of the participating ski areas across the country. With over 150 ski areas on this year’s SnowPass card, that amounts to over 450 days of skiing and snowboarding for $29.95. The Grade 4 & 5 SnowPass program is a ski and snowboard industry initiative that encourages kids to get outside and be active during the winter. Grades 4 and 5 were selected for the program because nine and ten yearolds are ideal ages to learn how to ski or snowboard, said a news release from the Canadian Ski Council. “The Grade 4 & 5 SnowPass not only provides a unique opportunity to ‘try before you buy’, it helps make skiing and snowboarding more accessible to families who might not otherwise be able to participate,” said Patrick Arkeveld, president and CEO of the Canadian Ski Council, the non-profit organization that is spearheading the program. “Even if the Grade 4 & 5 SnowPass is only used once, it will have been worth it to the industry if we are providing a child with a once in a lifetime opportunity”, said Arkeveld. “However, we hope that once a child tries skiing and snowboarding, they will love the sport for a lifetime.” Now in its 17th year, the SnowPass
