History teacher compiles book on war dead

T
hanks to some diligent digitization of records by a volunteer with the Vancouver Island Military Museum, new life is being breathed into the histories of 124 men from Nanaimo who died in the First World War. Their names, cast in bronze on Nanaimo’s downtown cenotaph, are being connected to a living record of who they were when they lived and worked in Nanaimo before they shipped overseas. Now the descendants of some of those men living in Nanaimo today can glean insight about their ancestors from a book of remembrance on display at the museum. Information for the book – the first phase of a project to fill in details about where the men came from, their religions, medical histories, occupations and other data – was gathered by museum volunteer Angus Scully, a retired history teacher who spent last summer organizing the data to produce the book. “Because you can digitize data you can analyze it in ways that would have taken years or would have been impossible before,” Scully said. ◆ See ‘MUSEUM’ /2
The arts and culture scene is thriving in the Nanaimo region, generating more than $150 million in economic activity, a new report reveals. The Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation presented the results of its first-ever arts and culture economic impact study Friday. It was jointly released with a draft of the city’s new cultural plan. According to the $19,000 report by Roslyn Kunin and Associates, the arts and culture sector has a “large economic footprint,” supporting 1,330 jobs in Nanaimo region and generating $154.5 Having arts million in ecoand culture is nomic activity. Sasha Angus, chief executive officer of Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation, said the report shows the size and prevalence of arts and culture is significant, with “literally thousands of jobs that depend on the sector.” The information is the economic corporation’s first concrete proof on the state of arts and culture and it’s anticipated to not only give Nanaimo a benchmark to grow the sector, but also better position the city to woo new business and creative professionals. ◆ See ‘STUDY’ /4

Museum aims to gather more information for book u From /1 “It takes a long time to enter the data,” Scully said. Scully drew from resources provided online from Veterans Affairs Canada and
the national archives to get basic data, which included the Attestation Paper filled out by every man who signed up for service with the Canadian Expedition-
ary Force, which lists basic personal information about the volunteer recruit. Scully combined that with information about where and when the man died.
“There was a commitment made nearly 100 years ago saying we’re not going to forget these people, but there they are. They’re just names carved in stone
now,” Scully said. “I thought, well, let’s try and see if we can revive a little bit of information about them. At the time, they would have all been men in the com-
munity people knew.” 2014 will mark the centennial of the start of the of the First World War. The book is seen as a an opportunity to connect people visiting TELUS STORE OR AUTHORIZED DEALER

the museum with that history and those who served in the war. “We wanted to complete the book and information relevant to local people,” said Brian McFadden, Nanaimo Military Museum vice-president. “We always tell people this is not a war museum. It’s about people, not things, so now that we’re getting interest from the schools, if we could tie it in to the descendants – of kids who live here – who maybe live on Nicol Street or these type of things and realize, ‘Oh, this guy lived on Nicol Street. Wow.’” Hopefully such realizations, McFadden said, will spark an interest in students and schools to do further research and discover more connections between themselves and local history. Studying the data, Scully got a sense of what kind of an impact the First World War had on the community. “There are several streets in Nanaimo where there were two or three residents were killed from one street,” Scully said. “Now when you go back 100 years, Nanaimo was a fairly small place, so if you’ve got one street with two or three people killed you’ve got an event.” Scully has managed to compile information on about 100 of the 124 men named on the cenotaph plaque, which can be viewed at the museum, but Scully and other volunteers want to get the information online so the public, especially family members, can view and contribute additional facts about the men in the book. The museum will need some help with setting up a secure website for contributing new information. “Get it online and invite the public – whether it’s students or just general members of the public who might be interested – to take part in kind of a collective analysis and gathering of data; make it a community event,” Scully said. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

efforts. But the duo are also critical of the city for allowing the fountain to reach a state of disrepair. It was gifted to the municipality in 1961. “It was absolutely spectacular and like anything else when the lights and plumbing is under water, it rusts out and needs to be maintained and literally the city never did,” McGuffie said. “The city has fallen down in my view, very badly, in not keeping it operating better than it is.” McGuffie also believes the Italians were ‘a little negligent’ when it came to championing the fountain. But Larocque, a member of the Italian community, said the Italians “shouldn’t have to babysit the fountain forever.” The consultants’ report on the fountain is expected in three weeks.

mechanical components to run the fountain to remediation of a crumbling concrete wall. The city would also need to restore lighting, lower the depth of the pool for public safety and build an outer pump chamber that employees could better access. The pumps are presently in a crawl space beneath the fountain. Consultants are still working on designs and final cost estimates, but Chris Sholberg, the city’s community and heritage planner, said the challenge will be finding the money to make the project happen. The idea is to get community groups and corporations to help, he said. Longtime residents and community advocates Blake McGuffie and Larocque both want to see the fountain returned to its original glory and are prepared to help fundraising
Boathouse fundraising campaign underway Volunteers with the Nanaimo Canoe and Kayak Club and Nanaimo Rowing Club are digging in to power the effort to build a new boathouse at Long Lake. The two clubs need to replace the aging building, a combination boathouse and public washrooms and change rooms constructed in the 1960s, with a new structure that will shelter the clubs’ canoes, kayaks and sculls, provide a clubhouse for members and create new public facilities and a playground. “It’s a joint building with the rowing club and us,” said Joyce Mark, canoe and kayak club commodore. “We’re doing some massive fundraising. It’s a large budget – $900,000.” The city will contribute $300,000 to construction costs if the clubs can bring in the balance. Not only is the interior of the existing building inadequate, but canoes and kayaks are stored in a caged area near Loudon Park’s parking lot, which is open to the elements that cause the crafts to deteriorate prematurely. It means money must be spent to replace ruined boats instead of maintaining existing craft and building surplus money to expand the fleet. The Long Lake Community Boathouse project will effectively revamp Loudon Park. The new building will be constructed at the site of an existing children’s playground and a new play area would be built where the existing building now stands. “It will be quite nice because we won’t have to avoid running over children when we’re getting the boats to the dock because we’re not going through the park anymore,” Mark said. “We can go straight from our boathouse to the dock.” Kate Rutherford, Nanaimo Rowing Club president, said discussions over getting the project started have gone on for 10 years. Architectural plans were drawn up last year. The clubs are currently approaching local Rotary clubs and other organizations that can help contribute, plus club members are organizing fundraising events, including a wine and appie night at Lucky’s Liquor Store Nov. 23. Mark said she wants to see the project completed within two to five years. The public can chip in on the fundraising efforts by voting for the project online. “Aviva Insurance Company is spreading $1 million across Canada,” Mark said. “Whoever has the most votes gets the money, is really what it comes down to.” Mark said the club is up against stiff competition from other organizations across the country. “We’ve got one last try to get enough votes in to try and get some money,” Mark said. “Any amount of money is helpful.” To vote for the boathouse project, please visit www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/ acf17101.

Just over 50 years ago the Nanaimo Centennial Fountain was a community showpiece, carefully hand-crafted by the Italian community. Now it breaks Sandra Larocque’s heart to look at it. “The fountain is not spectacular, but it used to be. It was really, really… spectacular,” said Larocque, a longtime resident. “My dad actually helped a little with [building] it. He was really proud, as were many Italians.” The water fountain has been deteriorating in front of the Port Place Shopping Centre, but with community help it could soon be restored to its former glory, city staff members say. The water feature with it’s handcarved salmon and colourful tile work is considered a local heritage site. Created by more than 150 volunteers as a legacy project for the province’s 100th birthday, it remains the only community-built fountain in the Harbour City – but it’s falling apart. Fountain advocates blame the city for not properly taking care of the centennial gift. But Ian Blackwood, the city’s manager of facility maintenance and construction, said it has just aged to the point where regular maintenance isn’t enough. The concrete wall is starting to crumble, electrical work has corroded and the pumps have started to fail. The spray is now more of a bubble than an arch and the underwater lighting no longer works. City staff members have been discussing what to do with the structure, including taking it out of the park. They opted to rehabilitate because of the fountain’s heritage value and hired Read Jones Christofferson Consulting Engineers to do a remediation plan. Early estimates peg the facelift at $250,000 and with no adequate budget set aside, city staff members anticipate it will need the help of corporate and community donations to put the fountain on the path to recovery. “Basically if we don’t do something soon, we are not going to see anything run in that fountain, everything is so corroded,” Blackwood said. City staff members aim to restore the fountain’s original spray pattern and make it easier to maintain. But Blackwood said it will be a complicated project with a laundry list of issues of fix, from the electrical and

Study will help city market to business u From /1 “In the years to come ... having arts and culture is going to be even more important because we are going to be having a real global race for talent,” Angus said. “Communities that showcase great quality of opportunity [and] great quality of life are going to be the ones that are successful.” The new study is anticipated to be a big asset in marketing the city as a place to establish new business, but researchers point to Nanaimo’s cultural plan as being a powerful tool to keep the momentum going. It lays out new strategies to promote growth in arts and culture and attract creative professionals, who have the choice to move anywhere. The plan recognizes that if the city can attract talent through quality of life and place, then innovative and technical industries will follow and help drive economic growth. Tactics to improve on the city’s offerings include shared workspaces to new tax incentives for cultural businesses in the downtown core. The cultural document also explores strategies to bolster creative and culinary tourism and cultural spaces. A new creative city commission is recommended to implement the plan, which will roll out projects annually. Nanaimo’s new draft cultural plan will be shown to Nanaimo city council Nov. 18 and the public will have a chance to give feedback during an open house Nov. 28. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Quality Foods and the Nanaimo News Bulletin will once again team up for the Christmas is for Giving campaign, which aids families in need. The food drive, which lasts from mid-November until December, sees a specifically printed paper bag included with various Black Press newspapers, including the Nanaimo News Bulletin. The bags can be filled with nonperishable food items and dropped off. “They can simply drop it off at any Quality Foods store, the Nanaimo News Bulletin or the [Loaves and Fishes] food bank address, which is listed on the bag,” said Quality Foods marketing director Rob MacKay. More than 27,200 kilograms of food was collected for food banks on the Island last year, according to a conservative estimate from MacKay and he expects the same amount will be collected this year, although he is hoping

for more. He also said that there was a bit of apprehension prior to the start of last year’s campaign. “We were a little concerned last year that [food donations] might be down, with the economy and everybody kind of tightening up a bit, but what we found was that people were actually understanding of that and actually were very generous in helping out wherever they could,” he said, adding there was an increase in giving. MacKay said that while
food banks seek donations year-round, the need increases around Christmas and holiday time. “Especially at this time of year, the need is much greater than other times of the year,” MacKay said. “We’ve never had a year yet where they’ve said, ‘No thanks, we’re good, we have enough stuff, thank you very much.’ It hasn’t happened yet.” The specially marked bags are included with today’s (Nov. 12) paper. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

News reports suggesting the B.C. government is considering dismantling the Agricultural Land Commission are not accurate, the minister in charge of the government’s “core review” says. A plan outlined in documents leaked to The Globe and Mail this week is “so secret that I don’t even know about it myself,” Energy Minister Bill Bennett said in an interview. “We’re not even considering blowing up the ALC, or bringing it inside government.” Bennett said agricultural land commissioners will continue to decide on applications to amend the land reserve, established 40 years ago to protect farmland from development. Bennett refused to comment on the suggestion that the province could be divided into two zones with
different processes. But he said he is aware of many cases outside the southwestern part of B.C. where obviously unfarmable land remains locked in the reserve. Bennett also rejected the suggestion that the Oil and Gas Commission would overrule the land commisison on decisions in B.C.’s northeast. Metro Vancouver mayors, facing the most pressure to
expand development, expressed alarm. “Certainly it’s disturbing if they’re throwing it out the window,” said Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters. She said some ALR boundaries need adjustment, but beyond that, her main concerns are that the commission has been underfunded to do its job and that more effort is needed to help support farming. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Police investigate child luring report Police in Nanaimo are investigating an attempted child luring incident at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre. The incident happened at about 8 p.m. Nov. 1 when a man approached two girls, age 10 and 9, in the parking lot and offered them candy to get in his vehicle. The girls told police they were near the aquatic centre’s front
doors when the car pulled up and the man asked them if they needed a ride and offered them candy. The girls reported the man to pool staff who called police. The suspect is believed to be aboriginal, 40-50 years old and heavy set with short, dark hair. He might have been in the pool, accompanied by two small children, earlier that evening. The vehicle is silver and resembled a Ford Taurus. Anyone has information about this incident is asked to call Const. Darren Swanson at 250-7542345.

Gabriola bus increases ridership By Karl yu The News BulleTiN
Gabriola Environmentally Responsible Trans-Island Express is seeking $27,000 for further improvements and additions to its community bus system. The bus service has submitted another application to the Community Works Fund, federal gas tax money allocated to regional districts. An earlier grant of $30,000 from the fund was used to purchase a used school bus and Mercedes Benz Sprinter for the service’s June launch. An additional Sprinter has since been purchased with reserve money from Island Futures. According to Steven Earle, a spokesman for the Gabriola community bus committee, $17,500 of the money will go to the pay off the bus and prepare it for usage. “Some of it will be to make sure that everything is in good shape on the bus ... No such thing as disposable The judgmental attitudes of our society are deeply ingrained. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team’s announcement earlier this month of the identification of the body of a woman discovered in a park on the Surrey-Langley border was – given the grim circumstances and the public’s right to know – done with as much taste and discretion as possible. The death of the woman in question is tragic fact. Her demise led to other facts about her life becoming public – that she was a sex-trade worker who was drugdependent. Those facts shouldn’t – by all that’s right – serve as her only epitaph. It’s likely that many of us who read the story had the same unspoken reaction. A sex-trade worker – sure. Drug-dependent – of course. Body discovered in a park – naturally. But it’s when we think like that that we show our own want of compassion. For the loss of a human life should never be rationalized or accepted as understandable or natural. Even the terminology – “known to be living a high-risk lifestyle” – is, in itself, implicitly judgmental. We only lately reached a point as a society when we have begun to understand that how a woman acts, or dresses or presents herself can never be seen as an excuse for a violent crime against her. We have drawn that line. But we need to draw another line when it comes to the death of a sex-trade worker. Instead of breathing a collective sigh of relief that the victim didn’t turn out to be a ‘normal’ suburban mother, child, sister or spouse, we should be reaffirming that, for our society, any homicide at all is unacceptable. There is not, nor can there ever be, anyone in a just society who is written off or viewed as disposable. The dead woman was a human being, and what course her life took, and why, is immaterial. By extension, she is mother, child, sister and spouse to us all. When the campaign began after the First World War, there wasn’t much support for veterans once they returned from the front. The legion supported, if not financially then definitely emotionally, not only veterans but their families, particularly when government found loopholes to shirk its duty to its soldiers. And yes, I’m referencing a specific, personal situation. Dividing that message, even if the white poppies are given away, dilutes the legion’s ability to raise money through its poppy campaign. It’s been an unwritten rule for decades that the soldiers are off limits. We can debate the motives of countries in conflict, we can disagree on the merits of fighting with another country but we always support the boots on the ground. Remembrance Day is their day, to share with their colleagues the memories, to laugh and cry, and somehow find their own peace with what they saw and experienced. The peace movement is a wonderful thing but it needs its own day, not one co-opted from another group. On Aug. 6, peace groups often float lanterns in Swy-a-lana Lagoon to remember the loss of life at Hiroshima. It’s a beautiful event and an opportunity for an organization to write its own message of peace.
‘Others view the red poppy as a symbol of peace, and I have to agree.’

Nanaimo should say no to incinerator To the Editor,
Re: No final verdict from council on incinerator plan, Nov. 7 It is frustrating, even galling, that the good work of so many dedicated council and staff members during my mayoral terms of office are being ignored, abandoned and frittered away at great cost and loss to Nanaimo taxpayers. The serious efforts to reconcile and work co-operatively with the Snuneymuxw First Nation, the Port of Nanaimo, the Regional District of Nanaimo, all our neighbours, and
economic development entities, are but a few examples squandered in the last few years. The most recent is the apparent abandonment of our multi-year, multimillion dollar efforts to end our city’s poor historic reputation as a ‘drive through and drive by’ and make it the destination visitors can enjoy and residents can be proud of. The many initiatives to repair and enhance Nanaimo’s image will all be for naught if the seeming dithering over the Duke Point garbage incineration proposal continues. It is my opinion
that exceedingly few of our citizens want our paradise to be known as Nanaimo, garbage capital of B.C. Before the deadline, a more thoughtful, assertive majority of council must intervene. Call a special open meeting. Debate and pass a resolution, nay a declaration, to Vancouver resolutely stating: “It is your social, moral, ecological, economic responsibility to look after your own garbage. Nanaimo says no to hosting a regional incinerator.”

Inconsiderate pedestrians putting everyone’s lives in danger To the Editor,
In the interest of public safety I would like to share my opinion on traffic. I’m sure you are all aware of the problems of having pedestrians arrogantly stepping into traffic with little or no regard of the consequences they impose on a driver or a car, truck or bus. I have to wonder if they have any value for their own life, or hoping to get hit for the insurance, or are they too preoccupied with their own problems to be considerate and careful and take some accountability for their actions. I’ve had numerous situations when a pedestrian has
caused me to panic stop and have the vehicle behind me – following too close – almost rear-end my vehicle and then have the pedestrian smile arrogantly and even flip me off and keep on walking. It is no wonder that there are so many pedestrians injured or killed. It is no wonder that our insurance rates are so outrageously high. Vehicles are designed to be safe in accidents but the designs also have built in blind spots which hamper the drivers’ vision to see pedestrians, bicyclists and skateboarders and even other vehicles at times.
Is anyone in city hall aware that the more difficult you make it to recycle, the less people will recycle? Most people are willing to separate recyclables and put them in bags for curbside pickup. Most people are not willing to save boxes full of glass, styrofoam, and now plastic bags to make a trip to designated collection services.

Because pedestrians keep stepping recklessly into traffic, it increases insurance premiums for all drivers, says letter writer.
Being retired from law enforcement and having investigated so many accidents of the maimed and dead, it baffles me how people can be
so reckless and irresponsible. We are all out of control and we are waiting for that accident to happen today, tomorrow,
next week. And the insurance companies continue to smile and raise our premiums.

Recycling worthwhile, but it needs to be convenient To the Editor,
Hockey Team Specials
We are all busy people. We have jobs, families and commitments that take up most of our available time. Adding more chores will just make more people unwilling to take the time to recycle and our landfill will just get bigger. I am sure that most people, when given a choice, would pay more for complete curbside pickup of all recyclables. The town of
View Royal for instance has had glass as part of its collection for years. To the Editor,
Michael Irving via e-mail
Re: District granted recycling award, Nov. 5. Congratulations to the RDN for receiving this recycling award for electrical item collection rate. The RDN could also be recognized for being an early
adopter of compost collection. Another community organization needs to receive a pat on the back, and that is the Nanaimo Recycling Exchange. It takes up a lot of slack, taking items our civic collections doesn’t cover – glass, styrofoam, milk cartons, and household items. Check them out.

Christmas is coming
to Beban Park
C
hristmas is coming early to the central Island. More than 150 high-quality B.C. artisans will fill into the winter wonderland created at Beban Park as part of the 20th annual Kris Kringle craft fair Thursday through Sunday (Nov. 14-17). Visitors will find jewelry to flatter any neckline, silk clothes to extenuate the feminine form, furry teddy bears for the Kringle stocking hung by the fireplace and hand-sewn pajamas to snuggle into before bedtime.
The skilfully sewn Christmas tablecloths and table runners create a beautiful table setting for the handcrafted pottery, casseroles dishes for the baked yams, platters for the Turkey and cranberries, goblets for the homemade wine and plates for the artisan cheeses and crackers. Dessert is followed up with mouthwatering truffles and whipped cream. If the products alone weren’t enough, the fair also features roving entertainers, including Kris Kringle, Karole Kringle, Princess Kringle,

Art show hits plaza screen
I
DOWNTOWN VENUE showcases videos.
The video works of three artists will be on display on the big screen at Diana Krall Plaza. Video works by Corey Bryson, Laura Dutton and Jennifer Van de Pol draw attention to the individual and collective experi-
ences of particular places or events. These artists make use of local histories, political issues and social behaviour as they examine and reimagine the world through documentation, altered time and fabricated experiences. Intervening in the regular programming, the videos run periodically throughout the day
for the duration of the exhibition, allowing viewers to experience the same artworks at different points in their day and with different circumstances. The video show, an exhibition of the Nanaimo Art Gallery, runs until Dec. 15. For more information, please call 250-754-1750 or visit www.nanaimoartgallery.com.
Girl group’s story told in Fringe Flick A movie about an aboriginal all-female soul quartet is the next offering from TheatreOne’s Fringe Flicks series. The Sapphires, based on the smash 2004 Australian play by Tony Briggs, was inspired by the true story of Briggs’ mother and aunt, who sang in the quartet that entertained American troops during the Vietnam War. The film features renditions of classic Motown hits that showcase the voice of Jessica Mauboy, an Australian Idol alumnus. The Sapphires mixes humour with serious drama,
a balance maintained by the cast’s charisma and lackadaisical charm. Featuring period recreations, The Sapphires hits all the right notes with energy and spirit in this tribute to four women for whom success as performers was just the beginning. The film screens Sunday (Nov. 17) at 1, 4 and 7 p.m., and Monday (Nov. 18) at 7 p.m. at Avalon Cinema in Woodgrove Centre. Tickets $12. Subscriptions to the series are still available. Please call 250-754-7587 or visit www.theatreone.org.

Nanaimo News Bulletin Tuesday, November 12, 2013
Dozens of prizes available to be won u From /11 To keep the kids busy, face painter Cathy Corbett will create magical faces for the young and young at heart. The gingerbread station has hundreds of free gingerbread cookies, waiting for kids 12 and under to decorate with icing and Smarties. To capture those moments, Lisa Petterson, an award-winning photographer, will create magical Christmas photos with the Kringle family for you and your family. Kris Kringle has been a longtime family tradition with people from all over B.C. as they add yet another portrait to their annual Family Christmas Kringle photo collection. The tradition of free carriage rides through Beban Park with a free hot chocolate in hand will also be available on the weekend, from noon until 3 p.m. Riders are entertained by our story teller. To commemorate the event’s 20th anniversary, organizers are hosting a grand opening on Thursday at noon with cake and balloons for the kids. During each day of the craft fair, the first 100 customers will receive a 20th anniversary keepsake button. A draw at 8 p.m. will see someone win a $1,000 shop-
ping spree at the craft market. One winner will have 30 minutes to spend $1,000 of Kringle cash. Prizes are also available to be won, including a flight for two from WestJet. Door prizes total more than $10,000, including daily resort packages valued at $2,500. Hourly draws will give away $50 gift certificates from Quality Foods and every two hours a dozen red Christmas roses from Grower Direct. Shoppers will also get a chance to receive when they buy for others. Gift baskets worth $2,500 can be won by shopping at any of the crafters – one entry for every purchase. An ATM is on site so no one has to miss out on decadent fudge, delectable truffles, savory salsas, tasty jams and jellies, aromatic roast coffees, flavoured hot chocolates, balsamic vinegars for salads and meats, artisan cheeses and spiced cranberries for the Christmas dinner. Admission is $10; $8/students and seniors; free/children under 12, when accompanied by an adult. Four-day passes are also available for $12. Donations of any kind to the Salvation Army are also accepted. For more information, please visit www.kriskringle.ca.

Kringle brings spirit of Christmas
I
any name for the big guy means gifts, sharing for children during the holiday season.
Kris Kringle has had many names, like old St. Nick, Christkindl and, of course, Santa Claus – all European names linked to the newborn Jesus, the Christ child they called him, who grew to be the reason for the season. Jesus came to serve and we can all be inspired by his teachings, as was St. Nicholas. St. Nicholas lived in Turkey in the fourth
century. He was only 19 years old when he was appointed Bishop of Myra. During his life, Pope Julius set the date of Dec. 25 for the celebration of the birth of Jesus. Originally Dec. 6 was for gift-giving for the children after the harvest but it was later moved to Dec. 25 to include adults as well. So Christmas Day was born. Because of his many wonderous
miracles, he was known as Nikolas the Wonderworker. St. Nicholas went about putting food and other necessities of life in shoes, which were left ouside the doors of homes. He was known to put gold coins in stockings hanging over the fireplaces to dry and so became the tradition we follow today. Knowing St. Nicholas would come and visit them on Christmas Eve, the children would leave nuts, apples and sweets of different kinds to welcome him. To this day, cookies and milk

are a favourite for him. After his death in Myra Lucia in 343, age 73, he left a multitude of legacies, which set the master plan in motion for our modern Santa Claus to follow. From St. Nicholas to Sinterkloas to Santa Claus, where in around 1931 the American tradition changed the royal robe to the red and white we see most often today. St. Nicholas first started out, as the legend goes, riding in the horse and buggy through the skies to deliver all the toys until it got too small and then it changed to a sleigh and nine little reindeer – including Rudolph, of course. As time passed, he moved to the North Pole, which is more central for him to travel to all points – north, east, south and west. Ol’ Santa needed time to do this, of course, so Father Time stepped in and at the ringing of midnight he stopped all the clocks so all the boys and girls of the world could received their gifts under the tree on Christmas morning. So here we are today, bringing back to Nanaimo some 20 years of tradition, the royal robe and the history of Kris Kringle in the Christmas spirit.

2009 autobiography, Playing With Fire, then followed up by filing a complaint that led to charges against former minor hockey coach Graham James. “Nobody else is [a spokesman], so it might as well be me,” Fleury

said. “I didn’t know how the world was going to react to what was in the book. Guess what? Nobody ran away, nobody criticized, nobody ridiculed.” While promoting Playing With Fire he had a chance to talk to many other sexual abuse victims, sometimes several at one book signing. Afterward, he connected with therapist Kim Barthel and came up with the idea of hosting workshops to continue to try to make a difference. “We came to the conclusion it was about helping one person at a time and it was about having healthy conversations,” he said. sports@nanaimobulletin.com
The 2013 Canadian Bowl is in the books and a national champion has been crowned. Unfortunately, due to early press deadlines on the Remembrance Day long weekend, results of the Canadian Junior Football League championship between the V.I. Raiders and the Regina Thunder weren’t available at press time. For results of the final, please visit www. nanaimobulletin.com/ sports. Other local sports teams were also busy over the weekend as the Nanaimo Clippers played a pair of home games and Vancouver Island University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams hosted their home openers. We don’t have enough conversations. We don’t have enough openness.
BY GREG SAKAKI
The hockey rink has always been Theo Fleury’s happy place, he said. But now that the former NHLer, Stanley Cup champion and Olympic gold medallist has retired from the game, he feels his place is off the ice, talking about serious issues. Fleury has become a sort of spokesman for issues surrounding childhood sex abuse and he was in Nanaimo last week to lead a Friday workshop at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre called Breaking Free Through Healing Conversation: Moving Beyond Sexual Abuse and Trauma. “We don’t have enough conversations. We don’t have enough openness,” Fleury said. “Because any time you have shame attached to what we’re talking about, it’s very difficult for people

Bucs blow out expansion cousins I FIRST-PLACE team beats wolves 8-3.
BY GREG SAKAKI The News BulleTiN

The Canadian Ski Council is again offering kids in Grades 4 and 5 the chance to ski free.
Kids can ski for free Children born in 2003 or 2004 qualify to ski free this winter. The Canadian Ski Council is again offering its SnowPass, which provides three lift tickets to those who visit www.snowpass.ca, print an application and send it away along with a photo and a $30 administration fee. Mt. Washington in the Comox Valley is one of more than 150 hills across Canada that will honour the SnowPass.
Equestrian riders champions on Island and provincewide Hunter and jumper riders from Nanaimo earned awards for their efforts. Kassidy Keith, Emily Cake and Cheryl Keith won championships with the B.C. Hunter Jumper Association and the Vancouver Island Hunter Jumper Association. “All of our riders train hard, but these girls have seen consistent wins and strong results,” said Cheryl Keith, Queen Margaret’s School equestrian coach, in
a press release. In January, Kassidy Keith will receive an award as the BCHJA’s junior B equitation champion, while Cheryl Keith will be recognized as pre-green reserve champion. Cher yl Keith is also the VIHJA’s pregreen champion and Cake is the Island’s champion in prechild/adult hunter and modified child/ adult hunter and reserve champ in modified child/adult hunter.
When the Buccaneers skate at full speed, there aren’t a lot of junior B hockey teams that can keep up with them. The Bucs blasted the Westshore Wolves 8-3 last Thursday in Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League action at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. The game was 1-1 after one period, but once the Buccaneers started winning races to the puck, they couldn’t be contained. “We have some really talented and skilful players [and] o u r t e a m re a l l y knows how to capitalize,” said Noah Russi, Bucs captain. Glen Smith, general manager of the Buccaneers, said the Wolves were going w i t h t h re e l i n e s whereas his team kept rolling four. “We knew if we kept skating we’d break away from them eventually,” he said.
GREG SAKAKI/ThE NEwS BullETIN
Nanaimo Buccaneers forward Dan Foglietta, middle, whacks the puck toward the Westshore Wolves crease after being knocked down during last Thursday’s junior B hockey game at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.
“We moved the puck really, really well.” The Nanaimo squad had been battling through some close games of late. “We weren’t getting pucks to the net in those games,” Smith said. “We talked a lot tonight about getting more pucks to the net and on the power play, getting a shot
every 15 seconds. It helps.” Russi led his team with two goals and two assists, Jordan Levesque also scored twice and Garrett Dunlop had four assists. Other scorers were Shane Dial, Lee Orpen, Chad Bell and David Osborne. Ryan Waldhaus made 22 saves for the win.

Russi said his team will build off the blowout win. “It’s nice to get those 4-3, 3-2 games because you’re going to need those throughout playoffs, but the 8-3 win definitely feels good for the dressing room and we’ll just try to keep going and push forward.”
GAME ON … The Bucs hosted the Kerry Park Islanders on Saturday after press time. Next home action is Thursday (Nov. 14) when the Comox Valley Glacier Kings visit the Nanaimo Ice Centre for a 7:15 p.m. faceoff. Tickets will be available at the door. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

active life Program targets healthy weight
I
MEND FOCUSES on kids’ eating habits, exercise. BY KARL YU THE NEWS BULLETIN
A
free program coming to Oliver Woods Community Centre in the new year will enable youth to be more active and healthier. Mind, Exercise, Nutrition ... Do it! or MEND, is targeted to children between seven and 13 years who are above a healthy weight. According to MEND programmer Tara McNeil and city recreation coordinator Damon Johnston, it is not a weight loss program but rather one that helps families make healthy lifestyle choices. The program will run from Jan. 6 to March 31 with 20 sessions – Mondays, 5 to 7 p.m., and Saturdays, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Parents or caregivers are required to join their children for the sessions, which are a combination of exercise and lessons on healthy food choices. “It’s really around setting limits for children with screen time and trying to shift that time into being more active and really giving them the knowledge about what’s in the food that they’re eating and how that impacts their lifestyle and how they live,” Johnston said. Children will have two hours of exercise a week

KARL YU/THE NEWS BULLETIN
Nanaimo is one of 15 communities selected for the Mind, Exercise, Nutrition ... Do It! (MEND), a program the City of Nanaimo’s MEND programmer Tara McNeil and recreation coordinator Damon Johnston say focuses on teaching families to live healthy lifestyles.
with activities set up in a circuit-based, activity station type format. “It’s a lot of play stuff [for children] – that’s the whole idea of it,” McNeil said. “It’s fun, energetic. They’re going to be doing balance, flexibility core work, cardio exercises – it’s just a whole mix and it changes every week,” said McNeil. She said the program is non-judgmental and a learning process for the family.
“With us as adults, we want to lose weight, whereas with kids, it’s more stabilize your weight as you grow taller and then your weight actually becomes good for your height as an adult,” McNeil said. “There’s no diet approach whatsoever, just balanced healthy eating, so that basically, your weight does stay the same as you grow.” There will be two information sessions for people
who want to register for MEND: one Thursday (Nov. 14) and another on Monday (Nov. 18). Both take place between 7-8 p.m. at Oliver Woods Community Centre. The program is paid for by the Ministry of Health and Nanaimo is one of 15 communities in B.C. where it will be offered. ACTIVE LIFE

Majority of injuries to seniors from falls Falls account for 85 per cent of all injuries among seniors in B.C. and are the main reason why older adults lose their independence. When seniors fall, the consequences can be serious. In fact, falls were the leading cause of injury deaths among B.C. seniors in 2010. Increased fall risk can occur for a variety of reasons, usually from a lack of balance or inability to recover balance due to agerelated physical or mental health problems, impaired mobility or vision, a reaction to medications, or slip and trip hazards. Falls usually happen at home, and women over 65 years are 2.3 times more likely to be hospitalized for a fall-related injury than men. Many of these involve hip fractures. Nearly one in 10 hospitalizations among B.C. seniors were due to a fall last year and 40 per cent of fall-related hospitalizations involved a hip fracture. Approximately one quarter of older adults who live independently prior to a hip fracture may need to live in a facility for a period of time following a fall-related fracture. A contributing factor is that seniors may become afraid of falling, so they restrict their activities and this can lead to weak muscles, stiff joints and poor balance, resulting in more falls. The good news is that most falls are predictable and can be prevented by taking simple steps to reduce fall risk. Having enough vitamin D can help to reduce the risk of falls and fall-related injuries. Vitamin D keeps muscles strong which is important for balance and mobility, and helps calcium absorb into bones which keeps bones strong. Eating foods rich in calcium and vitamin D will help protect against muscle weakness, which in turn will help prevent falls. Health Canada recommends that adults over the age of 70 years take 800 units of vitamin D per day. To help assess whether you are getting enough vitamin D, contact a dietitian at HealthLinkB.C. through 811. For more information on fall prevention, please visit www.health.gov.bc.ca/ prevention/fallprevention.html.
By Tammy Toor It’s getting colder outside, the days are getting shorter, and if you’re like me, the changing season can sometimes make staying active seem less attractive. I mean, who likes to leave their indoor warm, comfortable surroundings in exchange for colder, wetter, darker ones? Although it might be tough to convince yourself to stick to that fitness plan you did so faithfully during the spring and summer months, fall and winter can actually be a great time to mix up your workouts, get creative and even try some new, exciting activities that will keep you healthy and chase away those winter blues.
Change your outlook. Take the new
season as an opportunity to revisit your goals and then plan out what you’d like to accomplish. You don’t have to wait until Jan. 1 to set some attainable fitness goals. Try something new.
Parks, Recreation and Culture has programs for every age and ability. Have you ever tried yoga? If not, why not try it now? Swimming, skating, yoga, Pilates and a whole variety of fitness classes are all available for you to try.
Get creative at home. Sure, going
your computer or tablet. Invest in a few pieces of fitness equipment, like hand weights or fitness bands, and you are set.
Make a workout date. If you can’t
seem to muster the energy to workout by yourself, make a commitment with either a friend, family member or even the family dog. You’re a lot more likely to follow through on your workout commit-
outside or to the gym can be inconvenient, but you can always pop in a workout DVD or find a workout on
out our Fall and Winter Activity Guide online at www. nanaimo.ca or pick up a copy at one of our recreation centres. I am convinced that there is something in there to help keep you and your family active and healthy this season. u Tammy Toor is a graphics specialist with Nanaimo Parks, Recreation and Culture.
