It was an emotional day in Cranbrook court Thursday for the sentencing of Roland Capilo over the death of his niece, Brittany Capilo. Roland Capilo was driving on New Year’s Day 2012 on the ?aq’am (St. Mary’s) reserve when the van crashed, killing 20-year-old Brittany. After he pleaded guilty in May to dangerous driving causing death and failure to stop at an accident causing bodily harm, Roland Capilo’s sentencing was
scheduled for Thursday, November 7, 2013 in Cranbrook Provincial Court. Members of Brittany’s and Roland’s family were in court to hear the sentence, and Judge Ron Webb gave Capilo a chance to read a written apology to the family. At times too emotional to speak, Capilo stood facing Brittany’s mother to offer his first apology since the incident. “I never intended to harm her or anybody in the vehicle,” he said.

Cranbrook RCMP are looking for a man who pretended to be a police officer this week. On Monday, November 4 at 5 p.m., a woman stopped at the roadside rest area about 10 ki-
lometres east of Cranbrook to use the washroom. A man approached her and identified himself as Cst. Johnson. He told the woman he was performed a road check and asked her to walk to the rear of her car.
The woman, thinking something was not right, instead got back into her car and drove away. “The Cranbrook RCMP wants to advise the public that there were no plain clothes officers out that night conduct-
ing road checks in that area. If there had been, they would have been readily identifiable by the production of their badge and identification card,” said Cpl. Pat Prefontaine.

City unveils concepts for 2nd Avenue, Moir gravel pit ARNE PETRYSHEN Townsman Staff
On Wednesday, Nov. 6, the City of Cranbrook and engineering firm Urban Systems hosted an open house to present concept designs on a redeveloped 2nd Avenue South and a new use for the Moir gravel pit as operations on some parts of it slow down. Representatives from the firm explained the concepts behind the redesigns.
The plan for 2nd Avenue South was developed with the concept of a “complete street.” The redesign will include roundabouts at 7th Street and 11th Street, and bulb-outs as traffic calming measures. The sidewalks will be wide with prominent accessible bus stops. Crosswalks will be placed at narrow points in the road.

The Kootenay Ice have lent their support to Believe in the Gold, a fundraising campaign to support families affected by childhood cancer. On Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, when the Ice host the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings, the team will use yellow ribbon sticks during the warm up and first period. Those sticks will then be auctioned off in a silent auction during the game behind Section U, with all proceeds going towards Believe in the Gold. Winning bidders will receive their sticks after the game directly from the Ice players. The East Kootenay Foundation for Health is preparing for its largest annual holiday fundraiser — the Starlite Campaign.The sixth annual event is scheduled to kick off at the end of November coinciding with the City of Cranbrook’s annual light-up festivities. In the meantime the foundation’s volunteer and dedicated Starmakers have been busy refurbishing the stars thanks to the generous donations of lighting materials from BL Lighting in Vancouver (Betty Lou Pacey and team) and Jim Amy of EB Horsman in Cranbrook. City to raise sewer and water fees, decrease waste disposal fees A r n e P e t rys h e n Townsman Staff
Council passed the first three readings of two bylaws that will raise service fees to the city and one bylaw that actually lowers fees. All three bylaws were approved in the Five Year Financial Plan back in May. The first two bylaws deal with water fees and sewer rates, raising the rates of each by $1. Water fees will increase from $19 to $20, while sewer will increase from $17 to $18. The other bylaw deals with solid waste collection and disposal
fees and will see the rate go down by $1. Sewer rates will drop to $11 from $12. Coun. Gerry Warner was surprised at the decrease and why it was happening. CAO Wayne Staudt said it was due to the surplus budget the city tries to achieve. “We’ve reached that threshold where we’re comfortable with the surplus balance in the solid waste funds, so at this point we can decrease the user fee there,” Staudt said, adding that they will still be able to cover operating costs for the collection

In other bylaw news, council passed third reading and adoption of bylaws 3776, 3777 and 3780 which dealt with the OCP amendment, zoning amendment and heritage amendment bylaw that focussed on Elko Station and the old CPR shed. The bylaws were subject to public hearing on Monday and no members of the public came forward to speak.
City committees looking for people to fill the seats Townsman Staff
The City of Cranbrook is looking for residents interested in participating in advisory committees. There are a number of opportunities in a number of committees. There are two positions available on the Advisory Planning Commission. The commission advises council on land use, community planning and proposed bylaws and permits. There is one position available on the Board of Variance. It considers requests for minor variances to Cranbrook’s Zoning Bylaw regarding the siting, size and dimensions of buildings. The Cranbrook in Motion Committee is looking for one member. The committee examines transportation planning and policy issues facing the city. The Cranbrook Public Library Board has six position available. The board looks over the topics covered under the Library Act. The Economic Development Committee has two positions available. It provides advice and recommendations on the city’s economic development strategy, Cranbrook’s competitive position, emerging economic development priorities and opportunities, and ensures a sustainable resilient economy. Applicants have to represent one of the following economic sectors: Energy and Natural Resources, Tourism, Arts and Culture. There are two positions available on the Environment and Utilities Committee. It provides advice and
assistance to council on various aspects of the city’s utilities, as well as ensuring that the community is planned to provide for environmental sustainability. The Highway 3/95 Revitalization Committee has two positions open to owners of businesses located on Highway 3/95, and one for a representative of the public at large. The Family and Community Services Committee has one position available. It provides advice to council on issues of importance to senior, youth, homeless and physically challenged. The Key City Theatre Society has two positions appointed by the City of Cranbrook. The Wellness and Heritage Committee has one position available for a youth representative. It provides advice on priorities for planning and policy development with a focus on sports, arts, leisure, culture, heritage, parks and recreation facilities. The Urban Deer Management Advisory Committee has one position available. The committee examines issues related to urban deer within city boundaries. “There are times I wish that I went and not her.” Capilo said the crash prompted him to stop drinking, and he has not had a drink since that day. “Whenever New Year’s comes along, while everyone is out celebrating, I’ll be hurting, thinking of my niece Brittany who I loved so dearly.” After Roland had finished speaking, Brittany’s mother responded through tears. “I don’t hate you,” she said. “I just wanted to grieve with you. “It’s not too late.” Back in May when Capilo pleaded guilty, the court heard that the crash occurred on LD Ranch Road at around 5 a.m. on January 1, 2012. There were five people in a Dodge van driven by Roland Capilo, and they had been driving back from the hoodoos on the reserve after celebrating the new year.
Occupants of the vehicle reported that Capilo had been drinking, and was driving at around 100 kilometres an hour. Brittany Capilo was seated in the middle of the rear passenger seat and was not wearing a seatbelt. Roland lost control of the vehicle, and it rolled six times before coming to a stop. Brittany was thrown about 25 metres from the van and died at the scene. Roland fled the scene before RCMP arrived, but a police dog tracked the man down. He then told RCMP that he ran away because he was scared and didn’t know what to do. On Thursday, Crown counsel told the judge that a sentence no less than two years would be appropriate. Judge Webb interrupted arguments to say there was no point going into why two years should be the minimum. “I am hard pressed to find

anything to support the notion that a sentence less than what is suggested by the Crown would be appropriate,” said Judge Webb. “The Crown is being extremely fair.” The judge recognized the impact that the crash has had on the Capilo family and the ?aq’am community, and he said he understands that sending Roland Capilo to jail may not accomplish anything further. But, Judge Webb said, the issue of deterrence is still important, pointing out that Capilo was driving between 80 kilometres an hour and 120 kilometres an hour on ice and gravel, after the passengers had urged him to slow down, after consuming between eight and 10 beer. “Your behaviour after the fact was simply a panic driven situation,” said Judge Webb. He asked Brittany’s mother for her position on the sentence sought by Crown.
She said that all she wanted was an apology from a man she had known most of her life. “I feel bad that he has live with this memory for the rest of his life. But I have to live without a daughter for the rest of my life,” she said. In the end, Judge Webb handed down a two-year sentence for Capilo: 18 months on the charge of dangerous driving causing death, and six months consecutive on the charge of failure to stop at an accident causing bodily harm. After he is released, Capilo will be on a two-year driving prohibition. “I appreciate your efforts to maintain sobriety since the incident,” Judge Webb said to Capilo. “I hope that continues and I wish you well. “This is nothing more than a tragedy. I hope you can get your life back on track and restore the relationships with your family.”

Urban Systems outlined the problems with the current configuration of 2nd Avenue South. Wide lanes and narrow sidewalks, as well as on-street parking all the way along it, make visibility limited. The wide crossings also make for long crossing
times for pedestrians. Then the road surface itself is failing, and inconsistent drainage could put some residential properties at risk of flood. Underneath the street the water, sewer and storm drainage are in states of disrepair or past life expectancy.
Urban Systems presented two versions of 2nd Avenue’s re-design, with the main difference being the inclusion and exclusion of a central treed meridian. The other part of the open house was the unveiling of the concept design to reclaim the Moir gravel pit land as
mining winds down on parts of it. The city decided to start the reclamation process on the land as it becomes available — the first phase will begin in summer, 2014. The plan is for a park with emphasis on dogs. It will include a smalldog area, off-leash area,

The man was not wearing a uniform and did not produce identification. He is described as a Caucasian male in his mid 40s, six foot two inches tall, and he was wearing a dark hoodie and baseball cap. He was driving what is believed to be a 2008 Dodge Charger or similar vehicle. “The RCMP would like to remind people that if they are approached by someone identifying themselves as a police officer, they should ask to see their badge and identification card. Oxford displays map tattooed on human skin
I
t remains one of the most unusual items ever displayed by a library. In 1693 the librarians at Oxford’s Bodleian Library displayed the map beside a much larger map depicting the China Sea. This larger China map is fascinating in itself: a hand-painted one-of-a-kind item which unusually displays the sea centrally instead of the land. It is still not known who created this map, or where it came from. The smaller map is cruder looking, depicting a curved line from the South Sea Islands up to the North Pole. At first glance anyone would say the larger one was the more spectacular – unless they took a closer look at the smaller one. This map was printed on human skin. The skin belonged to a man from the island of Miangas (Philippines), who was known throughout Europe as Prince Giolo. His entire body was covered in tattoos, with Etching by John Savage of Prince his back and neck sporting the Giolo from Yap 1692 above map. The citizens of Miangas believed John Savage, which quickly aptattoos to be sacred, and that they peared in handbills and on playing would protect one from disease. Re- cards. Yet almost as soon as he arrived cent receivers of tattoos were often thrown into venomous snake pits, in Oxford, Prince Giolo dropped dead. Cultural kitchen gets cooking Submit ted
The Cultural Kitchen workshop program is currently underway in Kimberley in the kitchen at the Blarchmont Learning Centre. This program is open to everyone, with a focus on sharing culture in the kitchen. While sharing recipes, local food resources are being introduced that are available for loan by everyone in the community from Wildsight Kimberley Cranbrook. Equipment available includes an apple press, dehydrators, and fruit strainers. The idea behind this program is to come together over food to learn, develop friendships, become better acquainted with the community and give a warm welcome to newcomers from other countries. We’ve dehydrated fruits and vegetables in addition to making fresh juice from locally harvested apples. Partici-
pants have expressed how much easier it will be to borrow some of this equipment now and in the future, after going through the process in person once. The recipes we take on are dependent on interest within the group, decided the week previous and always different. A particular focus on how culture expresses through food makes this experience really unique. Kimberley is more and more multicultural, and preparing food is a wonderful way to come together and celebrate our growing diversity. Everyone eats, so food is a natural common denominator. We all have different approaches, and it’s a rich opportunity to share those differences. With our local climate, food preservation is a great way to continue local food sources into the winter months. We are

People living with hope
A
few weeks ago, I wrote about a commercial developed by Guinness. The commercial said something important about friendship and empathy. Recently, I saw another commercial from Allstate. It begins with a shot of a man swimming in the ocean while a little girl’s voice says, “There are man– eating sharks in every ocean … but we still swim. Every second, somewhere in the world lightning strikes, but we still play in the rain. Poisonous snakes can be found … but we still go looking for adventure.” The commercial ends with the same little girl saying, “Because I think deep down we know, with all the bad things that can happen in life, they can’t stop us from making our lives good.” Over the final shot, we see the words, “People live for good.” The first time I saw the commercial, I didn’t just like it, I found it moving. To be honest, I wasn’t sure why at first. It took me a little while to figure out what I liked so much about this commercial. What touched me in this commercial is the sense of defiant hope in it. The commercial acknowledges that lots of bad things happen in life. We all know it to be true. It says something true about the human condition, that life is not just a bowl of cherries, but that there is pain and sorrow intermingled in all our lives. But there are still good things. Maybe
more good than bad. And maybe, just maybe, it goes on to suggest, there’s way more chance of there being more good than bad if we don’t let the threat of the bad deter us from living life and seeking and creating good. All of this is made more poignant because it’s spoken by a child whose voice testifies both to the fragility of this life we share and also to the fact that, by speaking those Rev. Yme words, that fragile voice beWoensdregt comes brave, strong, and courageous. I believe hope is like that. Hope is both fragile and powerful. It is fragile because it exists against all odds and in the face of much that seems hopeless. It is powerful because it creates new possibilities, and as it is shared, it multiplies. All of this reminds me of a quotation often attributed to either Martin Luther or St. Francis: “If the world were going to end tomorrow, I would plant a tree today.” I’ve always loved that affirmation. It says that what we see is not all there is. There is more happening beneath the surface of life, and it takes effort sometimes to see the depths which are there. In that sense, hope is at the heart of any kind of faith. In the midst of all that life can throw at us, we defiantly proclaim that there is more to life than pain and sorrow. There is meaning to our lives on this plan-

et. Life is not just one meaningless random act after another. For Christian faith, we trust deeply that no matter what may come, God will have the last word, and it will be a good word, a word of life in the midst of death. That promise of God to bring all things to a good end invites us to live today with hope, even in the most difficult of circumstances. Not optimism, but hope. Optimism assumes that things will just keep getting better. Optimism looks for the silver lining while ignoring the storm clouds. But hope looks more realistically at life. Hope testifies that whether things get better or worse, ultimately God’s good will for us and all creation will prevail. Rooted in that promise, we can take action today, standing with the good, opposing evil, and doing what we can. We do all of this not because we expect or need to save the world, but rather because we believe that since God is at work bringing light into the darkness and life in the midst of death, we are free to throw ourselves into taking care of the little corner of the world in which we find ourselves. This kind of hope is fragile, brave, and it invites us to action. I think that’s why I like – and am moved by – this commercial. And I hope you are, too. appeared to be the best of times rising above the horizon. By the fall of 1918, the war, the “Great War”, the “War to End All Wars”, was slowly yet inexorably coming to an end; four brutal, bloody years of conflict in Europe, millions dead, rationing, worry and grief, all grinding to a halt. Sadly, the white clouds of hope soon turned a deadly grey. It was generally referred to as “la grippe” — French for “influenza.” It was no stranger to the world in 1918; cough, chills, fever, headache, body ache, fatigue; nothing new there. It was the bane of children, the old and the infirm. Occasional epidemics were noted throughout the centuries but what came before was nothing compared to what arose in those final months of the war. There is no decisive answer as to where it began although some sources point to a group of soldiers in Kansas, who carried it overseas and who, in turn, were sent to crowded hospitals to recuperate, thus ensuring its rapid transmission. From east to west, continent to continent, from the smallest Pacific islands to the barren wastes of Alaska the disease spread with devastating alacrity. The military did all it could to hush things; bad for morale, no sense worrying people back home. Spain had no such censorship and as the world became aware of the mounting mortalities in the neutral country the disease became known as “Spanish Influenza.” In early October soldiers began dying in Quebec, a few days later in Ontario, then westward to the prairies. By mid-October many cities enacted bans on
public gatherings. Churches, schools theatres, arenas, meeting halls and pubs sat empty in vain attempts to curb the onslaught. By October 24, health restrictions were in force in the Kootenays, a step taken “as a precautionary measure and not because there is any serious outbreak.” Within a week the deaths began, first in Bull River where John McTavish and Art Moran fell victim. There was still hope in Cranbrook that it would pass over but before the end of the month both Walter Riddell and Finlay Robson were taken. These were not the very young or infirm; these were men in good health, in their prime. This was influenza like no other, a disease that fed on youth and vitality. Halloween was cancelled across the land, the Stanley Cup playoffs suspended mid-series. People wore masks and tried home cures: camphor, glycerin, peppermint, garlic, cinnamon, goose grease, alcohol and tobacco — all proved futile. Drugstores offered remedies which were eagerly sought until local druggist Frank Murphy, age 32, fell ill and died. People died within days, within hours. Miss Lois Gamble, Mrs. Hope, Mrs. Whiteside, 10-year-old Mildred Wetherell – they all fell in the first week of November. Fourteen-yearold twins John and Jacob Wise, Mary Belle Somerville — the deaths carried on relentlessly. Mrs. Finlay Robson died one week after her husband, leaving three orphaned children. Her sister came from Calgary to take them back with her and died before she could leave Cranbrook. The entire town was either sick or nursing those who were. The vacant Wentworth Hotel on Baker Street became a temporary hospital as the bed-ridden were brought in from outlying districts. The Leask residence (quite probably the building still standing on the southwest corner of 2nd Street and 10th Avenue) became a nurse’s home for the many volunteers attending the temporary hospital; eight of 10

For many, the vaccinations came too late. Cranbrook Herald, November 21, 1918. nurses fell ill. Mayor Clapp issued a plea for all those capable to help those who were not. Families of seven or eight or more lay abed, unable to care for themselves. Doctors saw up to 80 patients daily while one nurse cared for the same. Single volunteers looked after thirty families at one time. There is no record of how many died in Cranbrook from the Spanish flu or the pneumonia that often accompanied it. Newspaper accounts and obituaries are incomplete. Indeed, it is
surprising that the newspaper continued to publish during the worst of the epidemic, maintaining a positive outlook all the while. Many deaths — such people as were considered foreigners or second-class citizens — went unrecorded. The deaths may have numbered 50, or 100, or more. As the second week of November came, the only good news was that the war was finally and truly over. The Armistice was signed November 11 and determined Cranbrookians celebrated
that same evening with a parade and a bonfire, the only public gathering during the outbreak. Vaccinations were offered by mid-November and a great many people took advantage but, in truth, the worst was past. The death count world-wide was nearly beyond comprehension: tens of millions dead. Entire villages wiped out, countless soldiers who survived the fields of Flanders struck down on their return home, the workforce brought to its knees, widows, widowers, orphan upon orphan – it was among the worst pandemics in recorded history. The local public gathering ban was lifted on midnight December 11, 1918, but people were not quick to congregate. Churches and meetings were poorly attended, movie theatres half empty. In those first weeks of December no one seemed eager to tempt fate. Gradually, though, as the death count dwindled, things returned to normal. Hockey and curling took to the ice as the weather grew colder. The city band, idle since the early days of the war, struck up once again, the stores filled with Christmas shoppers and church pews filled. The New Year was heartily welcomed during the annual dance at the Auditorium and the town, the country, the world moved on.

At one time he was the baddest man on the planet, a heavyweight champion who terrorized anyone who got in his way, inside the ring or out. More recently he’s unburdened himself as perhaps the most tortured soul on earth, with a one-man show on Broadway that Spike Lee has turned into an HBO special airing Nov. 16. Now he’s got a new autobiography that might be the most soul baring book of its genre ever written. The title is “Undisputed Truth,” and the truth is that Mike Tyson is one messed up dude. With Skapski out and Hoflin in, Kootenay’s closest goaltending prospect—Jayden Sittler—is in Red Deer playing Midget AAA with the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs. But with an immediate need to back up Hoflin, Kootenay looked up the road to Kimberley for some help. The Jr. B Dynamiters have generously lent goaltenders Jeremy Mousseau and Tyson Brouwer to the team for the weekend, as Brouwer will join the Ice on Friday, and Mousseau

on Saturday. The Nitros have a pair of home games on the weekend, so Mousseau will play on Friday, and Brouwer on Saturday in the goaltending shuffle. Hoflin will get the start for Kootenay in both games against the Red Deer Rebels and Spokane Chiefs this weekend, and the two Dynamiters goaltenders will serve as emergency backups until Sittler joins the team for next Monday’s tilt against the Hitmen in Calgary. Skapski will be out for a week to 10 days with a lower body injury, according to Ice general manager Jeff Chynoweth. “This weekend, we are going to use both goaltenders from the Kimberley Dynamiters, Tyson Brouwer on Friday night, and then on Saturday, we’ll use Jeremy Mousseau,” said Chynoweth. “On Monday, our list player, who is playing with the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs— Jayden Sittler—will join us through till the Nov. 20th game when we’re back in Red Deer.” “Hopefully by that time, Skapski will be ready to go. All reports are, is that it’s lower
body and a goaltender, you never know for sure, but it could be a week to 10 days.” Chynoweth had tried to get Sittler in earlier, but it was tough to manoeuvre the schedules between his team and and the Chiefs’ in the AMHL. The Ice prospect has appeared in nine games with his Midget team, posting a 1.81 goals against average and a 0.930 save percentage. “Thankfully, Jerry Bancks and the Kimberley Dynamiters were very cooperative and they have two big games this weekend, so they’re helping us out as well and we appreciate that very much,” continued Chynoweth. Bancks is a former Ice assistant coach to Ryan McGill and Kris Knoblauch who took over the Dynamiters bench this season. Skapski started for Kootenay against the Calgary Hitmen last Tuesday night, but went down awkwardly during the first period. He played out the rest of the frame, but Hoflin came off the bench to start the second period and backstopped the team to a 3-1 win. “I was a little nervous
of course, and I was a bit worried for Skapper, you want to be healthy, but when I got in there, right off the bat, I felt good,” said Hoflin. “Unfortunately let in an early goal, but bounced back and then played really solid game after that.” Hoflin has appeared in six games so far this season, with a 2.79 goals against average and a 0.922 save percentage. “Personally, I think that was one of our best games of the year,” continued Hoflin. “We competed, we battled, we matched and overcame their intensity, and I think that’s what generated chances for us, especially in the third period—and we capitalized.” Kootenay goes up against the Rebels on Friday and the Chiefs on Saturday. The Rebels are a familiar foe, with three meetings so far this season. Kootenay dropped a pair of games to open the season in a home and home series, but earned a shootout win on the road just over a week ago in Red Deer. Hoflin will likely be facing Patrik Bartosak against the Rebels, who is the reigning CHL goaltender of the
year—a duel he is certainly looking forward to. “It’s an opportunity. Anytime you’re playing against a goalie like that and you out battle him, people are going to notice,” said Hoflin, “and I think, especially for my teammates, if they notice that I competed against a goalie who did win that kind of award, I think that’s going to go a long way in the dressing room.” Friday’s tilt against the Rebels is Kootenay Ice School Spirit Night, which will feature schools battling it out for bragging rights as the loudest crew in the building. After the Rebels, the Ice are taking on a U.S. Division team in the Spokane Chiefs, which features the WHL’s leading scorer in Mitch Holmberg. In just 19 games, Holmberg has tallied the same number of goals and collected 26 assists for a total of 45 points. Spokane is in a logjam with two other teams, as they battle it out for second place honours behind the Portland Winterhawks in the Western Conference.

An average of 20 players have been lacing up the skates every Monday night and are taken through a series of drills to hone their skills. With the help of Coach Roberta Rodgers, professional powerskating instruction from Cindy Armstrong and the assistance and netminding of a former Creston Valley Thundercats goalie, Monday night at the Kinsmen Arena has never been so much fun.

The Avs are hitting the home court again this weekend, hosting the visiting Capilano University Blues, and will be facing some tough competition. For the men, the Avs are facing the reigning Pacwest champions, who won the league title in the College of the Rockies gym last spring. The ladies are facing a Capilano team that is currently ranked third in the Pacwest standings, and feature a few former CIS players. Both Avs teams have had a week of practice after opening their home schedule against the Royals last weekend. The men split the record with a win and a loss, while the women dropped both matches. “We were playing hard, we were trying hard,” said men’s Avs libero Scott Bedell. “We stopped worrying about playing for the crowd and started playing for ourselves and our team, and that seemed to help
us through the whole thing.” Bedell said the team couldn’t really figure out what they were struggling with in the rematch, which they lost in a tiebreak set at 3-2. However, there are lessons to be learned in losing, which were applied in practice this week. “Emotional management right now,” said Bedell. “We were kind of on a roller coaster ride when emotionally, we were there, we were playing really well, staying positive, but as soon as the other team would get a few points on us, they’d go on a run. “Emotional management was lacking, and we got in a rut for a while and that cost us a few sets there, so that was our biggest problem I think.” Bedell said the men’s Avs have seen some video of the
Blues in action, and prepared a little around that. “It looks like they will have pretty much the same team as last year,” said Bedell. “They won provincials here last year, but that’s almost good for us, because we know what we should expect.” The women have also hit the practice court, and working on a few things that exposed them last weekend against the Royals. “We’ve been focusing a lot on serve-receive, so passing off the serve and working on movement and stuff, communication, a lot of back row balls,” said setter Julie Pilon. “Mainly serve-receive, because that’s what we struggle with and just regular offence.” Though the ladies have had a tough go in some matches, they’ve been com-

petitive, pushing a few opponents to very close set scores before being undone by the pressure. “Especially because we’re so young, we don’t have that experience that older players do to finish,” said Pilon. “We panic a little but we’re definitely working on it.” It’s the first meeting between the two teams, but Pilon and the rest of the Avs have done a bit of scouting work on their opponents. “They have some really good hitters. They have two players that were in the higher league—CIS—and they swing really well. They have a fifth year libero who digs everything,” Pilon said. “But their middles are weaker, so we’re going to try to move them around a lot and make them guess where we’re putting the ball.” The ladies match begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, followed by the men at 8 p.m. Rematches go down on Saturday afternoon, with the women at 1 p.m. and the men at 3 p.m.

Kelly Scott became the first curler to advance to the Page playoffs of the 2013 Capital One Road to the Roar Olympic pre-trial tournament with an 8-5 win over Renee Sonnenberg in the women’s A-event final on Thursday. Scott and her teammates moved one step closer to locking down one of the final four spots at next month’s Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings Olympic trials, where eight men’s and eight women’s teams will be vying for the chance to represent Canada at the 2014 Sochi Games. Scott broke a close game open in the seventh end. Sonnenberg had a chance for a double takeout with two Scott stones in the rings, but her rock barely ticked shot stone and sailed through the house, leaving Scott with a steal of two and a 6-3 lead. Scott used the hitting power of teammates Sasha Carter and Jeanna Schraeder to keep the house clean from then on, blanking the ninth and hitting out the 10th for the win. “Any time you can steal late in the game, especially a deuce, that does definitely give you an edge, and advantage,” said Scott. “It was not an easy sheet to play finesse shots on, so we definitely got the easier shot selection after we jumped ahead three points. But they did a good job of hanging in there and making us execute those peels or they could have been right back in

Collins enthralls at KCT Ba r ry Co ult e r
One of the world’s most renowned and beloved singers brought highlights of her 50-year-plus career to the Key City in Cranbrook on Wednesday, Nov. 6. Judy Collins spent a couple of hours singing songs in a voice that seems as bell clear as when she first rose to international acclaim in the 1960s. Collins, playing 12-string guitar, and accompanied by Russell Walden on piano, mesmerized the audience, whether with songs by her famous friends (Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Joan Baez), her own compositions (“Mountain Girl”, “Granddaddy”), songs by other icons (Sandy Denny, Stephen Sondheim, Billy Edd Wheeler), or simply telling stories from her remarkable life — her musical childhood in Colorado, her taking part in the “Great Folk Scare” or the early 1960s, or her association with artists who changed the course of popular music. Collins’ name-dropping provided a mini-encyclopedia of

She talked about headlining at a coffee house for a young folk artist just arrived in New York — “but it wasn’t me people came to see.” Later that night she had a drink with that artist, Bob Dylan. She talked about being awoken by a phone call from producer Al Kooper, who had a song from a young Joni Mitchell, who was there with him, for Collins to try out. “Both Sides Now” became a massive hit, and helped propel Mitchell to her own stardom. She talked about her association with Stephen Stills, who wrote the song “Suite Judy
Blue Eyes” about her. She mentioned how a young Ami Williamson (daughter of Australian folk legend John Williamson) told her that Collins had been an influence since Williamson had seen her on “The Muppet Show.” But it was the music that enthralled Collins’ listeners. “Both Sides Now”, performed only one song in, sent shivers down spines, while her big hit by Stephen Sondheim, “Send in the Clowns,” was reserved for the second set (where Collins took to the piano for several songs). The Joan Baez song “Diamonds and Rust” was recorded as a
duet with Collins. She warned about the new movement seemingly bent on destroying labour unions before launching into “Coal Tattoo” by Billy Edd Wheeler, and paid tribute to the late Sandy Denny with “Who Knows Where The Time Goes.” And Collins did not neglect her own songs — “Mountain Girl,” “Granddaddy” … classics all, each delivered with an interesting and revealing anecdote. “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” served as encore. All in all, it was a shimmering evening of music by an ageless folk icon.

The Cranbrook and District Arts Council is pleased to announce their upcoming origami workshop and introduce you to guest instructor Steve Bondy. Origami, commonly considered to be an art form originating in Japan, receives its name from two Japanese words: ‘ori’, meaning fold, and ‘kami’ (when compounded becomes ‘gami’), meaning paper. Originally a Buddhist art form used for spiritual and religious purposes, due to the high cost of paper, origami is now a cheap and enjoyable art form that can be explored by people of all ages. Steve says that he’s “dabbled in origami on and off for as long as I can remember.” On his practice, he says, “I have advanced to what I’d call the level of experienced novice, or early intermediate. I love making things and
working with my hands, and particularly enjoy working with paper and wood.” Steve’s modesty in his ability is evident in the beautiful pieces he creates from the simplest of mediums. Steve also volunteers as a Cub Scout leader, working with youth 8 to 10 years old, and loves teaching people new things. In his workshop on Thursday, Nov. 28, for $20 all supplies included, between 6.30-8.30 p.m, Steve will introduce students to the basic folds used to create simple animals and shapes. The class will then move on to more complex models, including the famous crane. The crane is perhaps the most iconic origami piece, however not many people know how it came to be a staple of the practice. The paper crane has featured in the practice for many years, as the crane is a symbol of for-
Steve Bondy tune and longevity in Japanese culture. However, the crane was made iconic because of a Japanese girl by the name of Sasaki Sadako. A victim of the Hiroshima atomic bombing in 1945, growing up with and suffering the effects of leukemia, Sadako heard of the lore of wishes granted by the gods to anyone able to fold 1,000 paper cranes. Determined, Sadako set out to fold 1,000 cranes in the belief she’d be granted a wish to save her life.
Sadako did not reach her goal, and is believed to have changed her wish to that of world peace and an end to suffering. Since then the crane has become a symbol of peace and hope in the face of adversity, and is the best known origami piece in the practice of the art. The workshop is suitable for people of all ages and levels, but is intended as an introduction to the art, students will be given all the materials needed and Steve welcomes students to bring their own paper if they would like. If you’ve ever wanted to sell all your possessions and live the simple life, Nelson Tiny Houses builds homes to support that kind of change — if you can find a place to put one. The City of Nelson is considering a change to its zoning bylaws, but the locally built tiny homes are too small to legally occupy within city limits. The bylaw stipulates that residential dwell-
ings must be at least 15 feet wide, but the width of an average tiny home is under 10 feet. At least one of the tiny homes in town was built by Nelson Tiny Houses founder Seth Reidy. A home builder for 18 years, Reidy built several tiny homes in place for clients before last year deciding to try to make a business out of it. He built his prototype on a trailer and when he parked it outside Ellison’s for an open house

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My older brother and I are both in our mid-30s and have not gotten along for 20 years. He has been verbally, psychologically and at times physically abusive toward me. He has a ferocious temper, and if I say anything he doesn’t like, he lambastes me. I try to avoid him, but since the birth of my nephew (the cutest baby ever), that is not always possible. I like his wife and adore my nephew. Before a visit, I have trouble sleeping at night. I feel anxious and dread the hours passing in anticipation. When I get there, I try to stay silent and enjoy the baby, not doing anything that might make him lash out. I wish there was a way to heal my relationship with my brother. He doesn’t believe he’s done anything hurtful and thinks I should just “get over it.” I wish I could. Is there something I could do? -- Little Sister in Need Dear Little Sister: Can you create a tougher skin? You need to stop taking your brother’s anger personally. His comments have nothing to do with your intelligence, your personality or your opinion on any subject. It’s about his need to be in control of every situation, and at the bottom of that need is fear. Empower yourself. Learn to smile indulgently and ignore him or say calmly, “I guess we simply disagree.” If you can create a different dynamic by refusing to be your brother’s favorite target, your entire relationship could evolve. Enlist his wife’s help to keep visits pleasant. Whenever possible, see your nephew when your brother isn’t around. And they may both love it if you offer to take the baby for an hour or so. Win-win. Dear Annie: I know you have heard this before, but please tell major retailers to stock good-looking clothes for women size 3X and larger -- not those horrid blouses with prints that look like they came from my grandmother’s closet. I would love to buy a top that has sleeves that fit and a neckline that’s not trying to be sexy and to have choices in enough styles that I don’t have to buy four of the same item in different colors. We have money to spend on nice clothes if they were offered. Stores manage to sell affordable clothes for skinny girls, so how about the rest of us? And please don’t tell us to go to specialty stores. I would like to find clothes in my size in any store. Wake up, corporate America! Americans are getting bigger. You can make lots of money if you offer decent clothes for big women. -- I Need Nice Clothes, Too Dear Need: Actually, there are more stores carrying larger sizes than ever before. And the selections range from inexpensive to pricey. There also are multiple places online to find larger sizes. There may not yet be the same variety of styles and selections as there are for smaller sizes, but it’s much more inclusive than it used to be. The market will go where the money is. It just takes time. Dear Annie: I sympathize with “Regrets in Paradise,” the 57-year-old woman who is in an unhappy marriage to a 61-year-old man. She discovered after they married that he isn’t the same guy and simply wants her to take care of him. I am a 75-year-old widow of six years. I have observed that most men my age are interested in women 20 years younger. I think they are looking for a “nurse with a purse,” and I am better off as I am. For more than 50 years, I waited on my husband and took care of him through his last illness. It is with deep sorrow that the family of Hartley Lundell announces his passing on Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at 76 years of age. Hartley was born on November 20, 1936. He loved golfing, cooking, walking with headphones on belting out Sinatra. Hartz was an avid fan of the Kootenay Ice, Calgary Stampeders and the Seattle Seahawks. Hartz is survived by his loving wife Marjorie of 50 years, son Scott (Judy Yee), grandkids David and Jeffrey, daughter Lorraine (Darcy) Massey, grandchild Brandon (Meghan Rockman), great grandchildren Kairi and Jace, son Duncan (Bernice) and son Brad (Kimberley Munro). He was predeceased by his father Arvid, mom Janet, brothers Fred and Robert and his sister Anne.

A new video has surfaced of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, this one of him going on an expletive-riddled, reportedly drunken tirade, staggering around “an unknown living room” (the Toronto Star) while ranting wildly and angrily. “I need f***ing 10 minutes to make sure he’s dead,” Ford says, about someone who has not been identified and

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The rubber duck squeaked out a win for a place in the U.S. National Toy Hall of Fame, joining the ancient game of chess in the 2013 class inducted Thursday. The pair beat out 10 other finalists: bubbles, Fisher-Price Little People, little green Army men, the Magic 8 Ball, My Little Pony, Nerf toys, the Pac-Man video game, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the scooter. A national selection
committee made up of 23 experts, including toy collectors, designers and psychologists, voted in the winners. The rubber duck “has been a fixture in pop culture for decades,’’ curator Patricia Hogan said. Although rubber toys first appeared in the late 1880s, no one knows exactly who hatched the idea of the rubber duck, museum officials said. To date, 53 toys are in the National Toy Hall of Fame, including alphabet blocks, the jump rope, playing cards, Scrabble and the stick.
