It was a nice November day. A fine day for a plane ride. So at about 1 p.m., Dick Perry and his five mates took off from England headed to Cologne, Germany. They weren’t going to the historic

city for a late-fall picnic on the banks of the Rhine River, though. They were men on a mission. A bombing mission. It was a pleasant flight that day, Nov. 27, 1944, a month before his 21st birthday. Until they reached their destination. That’s when enemy flak started flying at them from all angles. It was his 13th bombing mission into enemy territory and Perry had never seen so many shell bursts at the same time.

Developers of Victoria Hill are suing the City of New Westminster because the city intends to flip a property Onni sold the city for $1. Onni Development Corp., has filed a civil suit in B.C. Supreme Court claiming the company was induced by the city to spend money for the city’s benefit “not expecting [the city] would turn that benefit into a profit for itself in a way that also disadvantaged Onni.” In its notice of civil claim, Onni said as part of the 2007 deal that saw the company develop the former Woodlands land, the city had an option to “compel” Onni to hand over Parcel E from the land it purchased from the B.C. This volunteer opportunity allows citizens to contribute their expertise, experience and ideas in relation to important community issues. Committees are created by the Mayor and Council to consider information concerning specific issues which would otherwise absorb the time and attention of Council. By fulfilling this role, committees enable Council to perform legislative functions more effectively and efficiently. A committee must therefore operate in accordance with the specific mandate and terms of reference or bylaw approved by Council. The Local Government Act provides that all proceedings of a committee are subject to approval of Council (except if certain powers are delegated by bylaw). ‘We had done a good job... we were still alive’ ⫸

Perry grew up in New Zealand and after finishing his final exam in college in 1942 he didn’t know what career path he wanted to take. The military was seeking young men for the air force, and although he didn’t know what he was getting himself into he signed up anyway. “All I knew was that I wanted to fly,” says Perry. He trained on Tiger Moths for a few months before being shipped to Southern Ontario for more training. There he not only earned his wings but met his future wife, Audrey. But after his training was completed, he was supposed to be sent back to New Zealand and he didn’t want that—he’d been trained to be in the war. “Everybody at that time wanted to get into the war. After all, we were young, we were invincible.” So he went to the commanding officer and asked him, “I have my wings, is there any way I can change that?” The officer found a place for him in England but training to be a navigator and bomber. “It’s not as a pilot, but you’ll probably find you’ll get an opportunity to do a lot of flying anyway,” the officer told him. On arrival in England, he latched onto Robertson, an Australian. They decided to form their own crew and make it easy for the

superior officers to put them into action. “You go after the gunners and I’ll go after the navigators and a wireless operator and we’ll see if we can get us a crew,” Perry told Robertson. So they did, and the ploy worked. “They were excellent,” says Perry of the crew. “That’s one of the reasons we got through the war.” When they got their first bombing assignments they weren’t nervous, they were excited. The first flight to Kleve, near the Dutch border, was fairly uneventful. A week later was a different story. They went on two raids on Duisberg within 24 hours, first during the day and then at night when they could see flak bursting all around them with big balls of smoke rising up from a

city lit up by fires from the bombing. When they returned they had the usual de-briefing before heading off for a hearty breakfast. “We always looked forward to the bacon and eggs. It was the only time we had bacon and eggs,” says Perry of their postbombing meals. On their sixth raid the

aircraft next to them blew up for no obvious reason, which was unnerving. But most of the time when they heard other planes had been lost they shrugged and forged on. “We had a job to do and we did it,” Perry says. When it was over, Perry felt participating in the Second World War was worth it. “We had done a

Remembrance Day ceremonies New Westminster’s 2013 Remembrance Day ceremonies will be held at the Royal Westminster Regiment Armouries on Monday starting at 10 a.m. The memorial address will be delivered by BrigadierGeneral R.R.E. MacKenzie. After the ceremonies there will be a parade to the cenotaph in front of city hall where two minutes of silence will be observed at 11 a.m. followed by a wreath laying ceremony and march past on Royal Avenue. good job. We had come out of it. We were still alive.” If they hadn’t succeeded, Perry believes England wouldn’t have survived and the world would be quite a different place. The reasons for Perry and his generation going to war are unquestioned. But he says the same can’t be said for much of the combat the world has seen since then. “You wonder why they’re doing it. Why is the United States getting involved in the war in Iraq?” says Perry. “It was the same about Vietnam.” After the war, Perry returned to New Zealand with Audrey but she didn’t like it there so they returned to Canada, opting for British Columbia because her parents had moved to Vancouver Island. He carved out a career

as a mechanical engineer specializing in heating and cooling systems, becoming a technological pioneer and industry leader. “I enjoy the work, I enjoy the people,” says Perry of continuing to have his hand in the profession as he nears his 90th birthday. In addition to spending his Sundays flying Cessnas out of Boundary Bay airport, Perry has been part of a group based in Great Britain fighting to get medals for those in bomber command who died in action carrying out orders. He says they weren’t given their due because the pictures of Dresden being annihilated by bombs late in the war led to controversy over whether or not the attacks were justified. “Dresden turned people’s thinking around that we shouldn’t have been bombing those cities,” says Perry. That change in the political climate, however, should not have prevented the young people who lost their lives carrying out the missions from being honoured and they should be remembered, he says. “Really … we only did what we were told to do.”

Heat can be soothing to aches and pains, but can also irritate or prolong inflammation. Never use heat on new injuries or arthritic joints. Cold may not always be soothing, but will usually be therapeutic by reducing inflammation and helping to heal the actual injury. Apply ice packs wrapped in a damp cloth, in 10 min intervals.

The New Westminster Chamber of Commerce doesn’t want its annual grant from the city next year. What it does want, however, is money for providing services the chamber believes will benefit New West. According to chamber president Christine Conway, the organization’s grant from the city this year was $41,000. Applications for 2014 were due Nov. 1, but the chamber decided not to apply. Conway said the board of directors felt rather than get money that doesn’t have any strings attached to it, they would instead work out deals with the city to provide services that will benefit both parties. “It makes us a lot more accountable for the dollars we receive,” said Conway. “We’re saying we’ll only take money from the city if we’re providing something of value, a business

exchange … We have found ways that we can provide value. It changes the nature of a relationship, so it’s not just an organization holding out its hand.” The chamber took the approach, said Conway, partially because the grant put the organization in a conflict of interest with the city. “Keeping our objectivity is something that we need to do. It’s not attached to the city,” said Conway. “We’ve increased [accountability] on ourselves. We audited ourselves on how are we best representing our services and be objective.” The chamber is proposing to develop a listing of all 4,000 businesses in New Westminster broken down into their service and product sectors. Conway said this would help the city in its procurement practices, and investors and developers looking to set up shop in New

West. It is also proposing to provide economic analysis for the city, produce economic indicator reports, start a business succession project, do business continuity planning, VIP tours of business and industry, open a business information centre in its office, and do sponsorship partnering deals with the city. The chamber has valued what it is proposing at $130,000. On Monday, council referred the chamber’s proposal to chief administrative officer Lisa Spitale and economic development manager Blair Fryer for analysis. Some of the proposed services are already being done by the city or already in its plans, said Coun. Bill Harper on Tuesday. “We would take a serious look at it and see where we’re going to go,” said Harper, chair of the economic development advisory committee.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK:

Hands off play An elementary school in Aldergrove has banned kindergarten students from touching each other. Langley School District has banned kindergarten students at Coghlan Fundamental Elementary from all forms of hands-on play. That means children are not allowed to play tag, or hold hands, even in the form of a walking school bus, or during imaginary play, such as fake fighting games. The ban only affects kindergarten kids. How does the school intend to enforce this ban? Send every boy to the principal’s office? Actually, yes. A letter home to parents says the school is going to have a “zero-tolerance policy with regards to hands-on play, resulting in the missing of playtime and trips to the office for those who are unable to follow the rules.” The decision to temporarily ban hands-on play stemmed from concerns made by some parents about rough play on the playground. Apparently, some kids were getting hurt. “Appropriate play means you can’t grab a kid by his hoodie and pull him to the ground when you are playing tag,” said Langley School District spokesperson Ken Hoff. “Star Wars” imaginary play was also particularly troublesome. A ban on hands-on contact for six-year-olds is a bit ridiculous. If one or two or more boys are causing a little trouble, deal with them individually, speak to their parents, explain and model appropriate behaviour, as well as consequences. To put in place an almost unenforceable rule on all students shows poor judgment on the part of adults in charge of teaching young children about such skills. —Maple Ridge News/Black Press

Vets paid the price so we could save? I take a somewhat dim view of cross-border shopping at the best of times. But Remembrance Day puts me over the top. You can pretty much guarantee that on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, B.C. shoppers will be lined up at the border in an immense, idling column, waiting to advance deep into U.S. territory to invade the malls of Bellingham. The R-Day landings will once again see battalions of Canadians head south to triumphantly capture retail products for a few dollars cheaper than at home. Never mind that they had to burn extra fuel to do it, and in some cases subject themselves to iris scans by U.S. authorities for a quicker crossing. Really, people. Heck, I’d love to see Royal Canadian Legion members mount a ground counteroffensive and go from car to car in the lineup soliciting contributions for the Poppy Fund from these patriots. Can’t afford that? How tragic.

City rezoned land last year ⫸

continued from FRONT PAGE

The company also claimed servicing work and amenities it had done had increased the value of Parcel E. However, last year, city council rezoned the land to allow for a mixed-use commercial/residential development. A report to council at that time said since Victoria Hill had limited commercial spaces “Parcel E presents the last opportunity to provide a commercial component with a ‘village heart’ within Victoria Hill.”

Fire victims told to clean up site ASAP New Westminster has told the owners of the buildings destroyed by the fire in Downtown New Westminster on Oct. 10 “to remediate their properties as quickly as possible.” In its notice, the city is asking the owners to apply for a demolition permit as well as provide a site management plan, a hazardous material and environmental impact report, and a geotechnical engineering report on the stability of the site so the city can reopen the sidewalk and street parking. A city release said it will continue to work with the owners, insurance companies, the Ministry of Environment and WorkSafeBC to guide and expedite the site’s remediation and the return of the street to normal activity.

The report added the rezoning would reflect the intended design guidelines for the area. But Onni, in its suit, said commercial development of Parcel E “will create competition for Onni’s business directly adjacent to Onni’s Woodlands property development” and Onni will suffer irreparable harm if it is sold. It also alleges had Onni known the city would sell Parcel E to a competitor it would have paid less to BCBC and either

agree to different terms on the sale or dispute the city’s right to exercise its option. Onni said it also could have refused to pay for upgrading services and amenities that would benefit the future sale of the parcel or asked for reimbursement from the city or whomever buys it. Onni is seeking undetermined damages and court costs. The city has yet to file its response, and have declined comment because of the pending litigation.

New Westminster council has joined the chorus of Sapperton residents fearful of losing their only grocery supermarket. Last month, Canada’s Competition Bureau ordered Sobeys to sell its Thrifty Foods store in Sapperton and 22 others across the country because they were too close to stores Sobeys already owned. The edict followed Sobeys’ purchase of Safeway Canada. There are three Safeway stores in New Westminster and another at Lougheed Town Centre. But it wasn’t until Thrifty arrived as part of the first phase of the

Brewery District development, that the Sapperton neighbourhood finally got a grocery supermarket. On Monday, council asked city staff to explore ways the city could weigh in on the issue. Council is considering sending a letter to the bureau with its concerns. In addition, Coun. Lorrie Williams, a Sapperton resident, may try to meet with the bureau when she is in Ottawa on Federation of Canadian Municipalities business later this month. Coun. Bill Harper said on Tuesday it’s important to keep a store open in that location because Sapperton had been without one for so long.

Student lauded as green leader A New Westminster secondary student has won an award for her outstanding environmental leadership. Kate MacMurchy received the 2013 Dr. M. Wosk Environmental Leadership scholarship on Nov. 2. The Grade 12 student has been involved in several environment projects since 2009 and “is well acquainted with Metro Vancouver regional parks,” said a release from the Pacific Parklands Foundation (PPF).

Last summer, MacMurchy participated in an ecology leadership program in which she spent five days on a schooner with 11 other youth learning about leadership, environmental issues and local ecology. Denise Coutts, PPF executive director, said, “we take comfort in knowing our organization and our parks have such powerful allies in young environmental leaders like Kate.”

Residents asked to rake leaves, please New Westminster residents are being asked by the city to help it deal with fallen leaves. After raking their leaves, residents should put them into their green cart for collection. If there’s more than the cart can handle, the city suggests using kraft paper yard bags and place them next to the green bin and not leave them on the road. Residents with 10 bags or more to be picked up can phone the engineering department in advance at 604-5264691. The city said this is the time of year when its drainage grates are prone to blockages from leaves and other debris so would like residents to keep the grates in front of their place clear. Clogged street drains can be reported to the same phone number, or by sending a smartphone picture using seeclickfix. com.

The Canadian choice: compact cars and compact SUVs

‘‘

Toyota believes this new Corolla can take the overall sales crown away from the Honda Civic.

Zack Spencer

’’

So many cars to choose from, so few words available in this tight space! Yes, I know that’s the complaint of every writer but we truly do have a lot of choice today. And the quality of vehicles is so much higher than it ever was so there is much to celebrate. In the run-up to 2014, I will be testing a lot of what’s new and improved. Today, I’ll just offer you five models to consider adding to your shopping list.

The 2014 Mazda 3

2014 Mazda3 The compact car segment in Canada is the biggest by far, with over 20 percent of all vehicles sold. So, the introduction of the Mazda3 is important because it is currently the fourth best seller in this class. The outgoing car was already one of the best handling cars and now with a lighter and sexier looking body, this new car is both eye catching and solid on the road. The base engine is a 2.0L 4-cylinder with 155hp, thanks to direct

injection. The larger 2.5L engine puts out a healthy 184hp. It is the interior buyers will care most about, and the Mazda3 is a nice surprise, due to class leading available options and a high level of finish. Starting at $15,995 and running up to $29,895, there is a Mazda3 for all budgets.

The 2014 Nissan Rogue has three rows of seats with room for seven passengers. model can take the overall sales crown away from the Honda Civic. This new 2014 model is made, and partly designed, right here in Canada with our needs in mind. The Corolla now has a longer wheelbase for amazing interior space, especially in the back seat. The dash is wide and flat for ample room and covered in nice looking and feeling materials, plus there is an available centre screen to use for the radio and backup camera. Powering the 2014 Corolla is the same 132hp 1.8L engine from the last model, with one exception. The LE Eco model has a modified valve system to improve fuel economy and pump the power to 140hp. The biggest change is the introduction of a continuously variable transmission for a greater range of gears, improved economy, and a smooth drive.

The 2014 Volkswagen Golf

2014 Volkswagen Golf This new Golf will be made in Mexico alongside the Beetle and Jetta sedan and will go on sale in the spring of 2014. It is wider and longer than the last Golf but also significantly lighter and safer. The base engine will be a new turbocharged 1.8L engine with 170hp but don’t worry the TDI diesel is carried over. The sportier GTI trim is fantastic, with an estimated 225hp, in the Canadian model, thanks to a new 2.0L turbo engine. The interior materials used inside are almost Audi quality. No price yet but building these new cars inside the NAFTA zone will save money and that will be reflected in the price.

The 2014 Jeep Cherokee

2014 Jeep Cherokee The Cherokee is back and it looks nothing like the boxy truck of old. In fact, this new, small SUV is based on the same Alfa Romeo platform used in the Dodge Dart. It is smooth and quiet and a pleasure to drive. The Cherokee is also the first vehicle in the world to be equipped with a 9-speed automatic transmission. The base engine is a 2.4L 4-cylinder with 184hp or the optional 3.2L V6 with 271hp, for just $1,300

more, offering good value. Not to worry Jeep fans, this new Cherokee is available with three AWD systems.

2014 Nissan Rogue You might notice a trend with my 2014 model choices are all compact cars or compact SUVs. This is the direction Canadians are heading when it comes to buying a new vehicle. With this in mind Nissan has an all-new Rogue compact SUV with enough room inside for three rows of seats and room for seven passengers. This is practical for people

who require extra capacity but don’t want to buy a bigger or more expensive mid-sized or larger SUV. Under the hood is a 2.5L 4-cylinder used in other Nissan products and is matched to a new continually variable transmission featuring more available ratios and reduced friction. The interior is very well executed, with a dash that looks similar to the bigger Pathfinder. Goes on sale just before Christmas. zack.spencer@

Alberta Premier Alison Redford says she’s optimistic her deal with B.C. Premier Christy Clark will increase the flow of oil west to the Pacific to diversify Canadian energy markets. She spoke Tuesday to the Vancouver Board of Trade after the two premiers unveiled what they called a framework agreement for cooperation on new heavy oil pipelines. “It makes it clear, officially, that Alberta’s royalties are off the table,” Redford said. “The economic benefit cannot be provided or guaranteed by the government of Alberta.” While B.C. won’t ask Alberta to hand over any share of oil royalties or taxes, it can seek to impose its own toll or tax on oil that may flow through a new pipeline, with Alberta’s support. Clark hasn’t said if a pipeline toll is how B.C. will seek to gain direct benefits to offset its environmental risk and satisfy her fifth condition for new oil pipelines. Redford stressed the discussion on benefits is one for B.C. to have directly with industry, adding she sees no role for Alberta. Such a charge may reduce the competitiveness of a new B.C. pipeline

Premier Christy Clark met Alberta Premier Alison Redford in Vancouver Thursday to announce what they are calling a “framework agreement” for heavy oil pipeline expansion to the West Coast.

relative to other pipelines Alberta also wants built to carry its oil south or east, or relative to the shipping of oil by rail. In her speech to business leaders, Redford pointed out 42 per cent of the natural gas produced in B.C. flows through Alberta to get to markets – without any toll being applied by her government. “Our provinces share economic destinies,” she said, making the case for the two province’s to work closely together to prosper from energy exports. Kinder Morgan Canada president Ian Anderson said it was “too early” to talk about the idea of a B.C.-imposed toll on each barrel shipped through a twinned Trans Mountain pipeline. “We’re looking to define and deliver the benefits from our project directly to communities in British Columbia,” he said. Anderson’s company is proposing to expand its pipeline from Alberta to its Burnaby marine terminal and

refineries in Burnaby and Washington. The $5.4-billion project proposes to nearly triple capacity from 300,000 to 890,000 barrels of oil per day. Anderson said $423 million would be spent in local cities during construction, $150 million of that on accommodations alone. He said the project also means an additional $500 million going to cities in the form of higher property tax payments over the next 20 years. Ben West of ForestEthics accused Premier Clark “flipflopping” and preparing to sell out B.C.’s environment with the agreement. “I don’t hear anything that would change the likelihood of a spill, the dangers from diluted bitumen, the concerns around climate change or the concerns of First Nations,” West said. “The only thing that seems to be being discussed is revenue sharing. And quite frankly, our rivers and our coast aren’t for sale.” twitter.com/jeffnagel

NDP children and families critic Carole James said she supports the concept of delegating child welfare to aboriginal communities where it’s practical to do so. But she said it’s “appalling” that millions are spent on high-level meetings while there is an eightmonth waiting list for youth mental health services. The B.C. Liberal government has a track record of this, going back to former premier Gordon Campbell, who recruited a South African expert as deputy minister to impose a new aboriginal child care system, she said. “They put out a big idea or a slogan, say they’re going to move it, and then have no plan to implement it properly, with resources, with clear outcomes,” James said. “The tragedy with this one is it’s aboriginal children who are suffering.”

We should eat more alkaline food. We all know that swimming pools can only work if they are acidic/alkaline neutral. This is still more critical for our body. Basic information to have an alkaline body: USDA now recommended on their website. MY plate.gov 50% should be alkaline food (vegetables, salads, legumes, fruit, berries, mushrooms) 50% can be acidic food (Meat, fish, shellfish, eggs, rice, nuts, cheese. Less or no bread, noodles, cereals, cakes. No sweets, deep frieds.) Most North American diet is 90% acidic food. If you have trouble to achieve at least a 50% in alkaline food and 50% acidic food, consider to take a supplement like Bell Acidic #39 Stomach/Alkaline Balance #39. It’s inexpensive and comes with a guarantee. It helps to have a healthy alkaline balanced body and prevents many discomforts, including indigestion and stomach acid reflux coming up, which a majority of people suffer with. 60 million in North America. We should not ignore that Dr. Otto Warburg M.D. was awarded 2 Nobel Prizes for proving that an alkaline balanced body can absorb up to 20 times more oxygen than an acidic body. Makes our immune system more effective to fight disease-producing bacteria including cancer cells we have in our body every day of our life. < Reflux gave me a sore throat and I could not sing in the church choir anymore. After taking Bell #39 I have no more reflux and rejoice in singing again. Helene Giroux, 65, Quebec, QC < Have family history of heartburn. For last 10 years I suffered a lot with acid reflux. I told all family members about #39 being all natural, giving quick relief with noside effects and no antacids needed anymore. Michael Fasheh, 49, Port Ranch, CA < Very happy with acid reflux relief. Time to get on the map New West’s rich arts scene is being taken online

I

t’s a well-known fact that we live in a great city.

With its long history, proud heritage and rich diversity, New Westminster is prime breeding grounds for all things arts and culture. In fact, the Royal City ranks fourth in the country when it comes to resident artists per capita. But we already knew we were amazing, right? Perhaps it should come as little to no surprise that the city, partnering with Douglas College and the Arts Council of New Westminster, has launched a cultural mapping project—a documented inventory of the arts and culture scene in New Westminster. The project, which is being led by cultural consultant Glenn Gordon, will quite literally be an online map. Instead of traditional map parameters showing which way is west and what streets are dead ends, the interactive website will show users the wide range of arts and culture that exists within our city limits. This unique undertaking is almost one of a kind, with only a handful of other Canadian cities having completed a similar project. Curious what is considered arts and culture? You name it—the map will contain categories as wide ranging as sculptors and painters to dance instructors and studios; from theatre groups and stagecraft; to local artisans and crafters; from writers and poets to storytellers and historians.

The Cultural Map will show it all. But a project of this calibre isn’t possible without a little help from all of New Westminster’s talented folk. So what do you need to do and how can you become involved and get on the map? A brief online survey is currently being conducted, and all those interested in being represented—both individuals and organizations—are asked to complete it. In addition to including basic contact info so that you can be updated, people are encouraged to provide their own respective websites and a brief write-up about who they are and what they or their organization does. There is absolutely no cost to anyone who wishes to appear on the Cultural Map. It is an excellent way for locals involved in the arts to reach a broader audience, attract new visitors and clients, promote themselves, and connect with others in the creative community. • The survey is available at www.hjlinnen. com. More information, as well as the survey can be found at the Arts Council’s website at www.artscouncilnewwest.org or by emailing nwculturalmap@gmail.com. The official launch of the final cultural mapping site is currently scheduled for spring 2014.

Willoughby Town Centre already thriving in Langley By Kerry Vital

Willoughby Town Centre celebrated its grand opening on Sept. 21, but the neighbourhood has been extremely popular with Langley residents for much longer than that. Loblaw’s Your Independent Grocer, Noma Sushi, Town Centre Liquor, Sassy Nails and several other stores are already

operating, while other businesses will soon open up shop. “This is very much a growing community,” says Hugh Carter, vice-president of community and commercial development for Qualico, one of the driving forces behind Willoughby Town Centre. “There are not only major tenants, but also a good collection of independents as well.” Eventually there will be a variety of shops and services available, including a building devoted mainly to medical and dental offices, as well as a pharmacy, yoga studio and a variety of boutiques. Willoughby Town Centre will also include a residential

component. The first phase is Kensington, a 65-unit apartment building. Other projects are planned for the future. Willoughby Town Centre joins South Surrey’s Morgan Crossing and West Vancouver’s Park Royal as “lifestyle centres” with residential and commercial space. “We believe in these walkable communities,” Carter says. “There’s a broader appeal here that I think is unique in the marketplace.” “The whole idea is to be pedestrian-friendly,” says Diane Zarola, sales and marketing manager for Qualico. “We want it to be a gathering place.” John Johnson, owner of Town Centre Liquor, is very happy with his decision to open up shop in Willoughby Town Centre. “It’s a real country setting with a downtown flavour,” he says, adding that he’s happy that the store can be in the neighbourhood from the beginning. “This area is growing so quickly. It’s really quite amazing.”

Marcon’s Heywood on the Park showcases Classic Modern architecture in a beautiful location beside a 39.5-acre park in North Vancouver. Laminate flooring, nine-foot ceilings and oversized windows are just a few of the amazing features.

Park-side living at Marcon’s Heywood on the Park By Kerry Vital

If you’re looking for a home that’s as beautiful as the 39.5-acre park it’s named after, you need look no further than Heywood on the Park, Marcon’s condominium project in North Vancouver that showcases great design and a fantastic location. “You’re literally on the edge of the park,” says sales manager Wendy Pirie. “The park is on two sides of the building, so you’ll never have buildings there. There’s retail and transit

on the other two sides; it’s really unique to have all of that.” Curb appeal is abundant at Heywood on the Park, with its Classic Modern architecture designed by NSDA Architects. Ranging from approximately 538 to 1,184 square feet, the one-, two- and three-bedroom homes are available in a variety of spacious floorplans. Among the luxurious features you’ll find at Heywood on the Park is laminate flooring throughout the main living areas and ninefoot ceilings (eight feet in the bathrooms). The oversized windows optimize natural light even on the darkest of days. “These are extremely bright suites,” Pirie says. “They don’t feel like condos.” The kitchens are fit for any budding gourmet, with their stainless-steel appliances, solid quartz countertops and full-wrap series cabinetry in Frosty White Gloss,

complemented by accent cabinets in squareedge Brookside Whitewashed Oak or Brookside Veneer Teak. Select homes include full-height pantries with a built-in microwave and a USB charging station. The bathrooms are relaxing, with their own solid quartz countertops and a deep soaker tub. The tub and shower surround is accented by Calacatta stone, complementing the Arctic White tiles. A floating mirror with polished chrome accent lighting shows you in your best light, while the warm grey porcelain tile floor is elegant and contemporary. The best feature of the homes at Heywood on the Park is the amazing views of the North Shore mountains or city (in some plans). This is accentuated by the generous patios, decks and terraces in every home. “These terraces are just huge,” Pirie says. Heywood on the Park’s location offers easy access to the rest of the Lower Mainland,

as well as schools, dining, recreation and shopping all within walking distance. On-site, you’ll find an amenity lounge with a patio. Marcon has a well-established reputation for gorgeous homes and great customer service, something that Pirie says has been bringing people into the sales centre. “They are there for you after the purchase,” she says. “They’ve built on the North Shore before. They’re top-notch.” Homes at Heywood on the Park start at $288,900. For more information, check out www.heywoodliving.ca, call 604-985-0003 or visit the presentation centre at 1621 Hamilton Avenue, North Vancouver.
