A family’s liberation from Holland Mallon family perseveres through Second World War, relocates to Canada WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
Port Alberni resident Hank Mallon was 15 years old and living in Holland in the spring of 1945 when the Second World War was coming to an end. Mallon spent his days working at a bakery and hanging out with his older brother, activities not much different from any other teenagers. But one day in particular that May was differen,t and it was special. It was the day Canadian troops crossed the Rhine River and liberated northern Holland from Nazi occupation. Other parts of Holland would be liberated as Germany surrendered shortly after. “All of a sudden the war was over for us. It was like ‘boom’; suddenly the Canadians were all there,” said Mallon, who lived in the town of Hilversum, which is in northern Holland. “It was a beautiful time and I was just glad the war was over.” The roots of the liberation were planted with the Nazi occupation of Holland five years earlier. Holland declared neutrality in the Second World War but Germany invaded it nevertheless in May 1940. Overwhelmed Dutch forces surrendered one month later. Mallon lived with his parents and eight siblings in Hilversum. He’d just finished school and was working in the bakery when the Nazis first appeared in his hometown. Two of his elder brothers who were soldiers in the Dutch army were spirited away to labour camps after the Dutch surrender. “We didn’t see them again until after the war,” Mallon said. His father, who had

from point A to point B,” Mallon said. “When I think back to what we were doing we didn’t realize the seriousness of it because we were just kids.” Living conditions got tougher in the latter years of the war, Mallon said. The suffering crested in 1944 when the Allied Operation Market Garden stalled in Arnhem, where the Allies couldn’t capture the Rhine bridge. Germany implemented a food embargo in Western Holland in September 1944. The embargo was lifted two months later but winter set in and the canals froze, making barge shipments impossible. A period known to the Dutch as Hongerwinter (Hunger Winter) set in and lasted until May 1945. Food stores depleted, rations were cut drastically and some

worked as a mechanic, lost his job after Nazis forbid Dutch citizens from using cars or bicycles, he said. Germany didn’t just plant troops in Holland. It also instituted social controls that disrupted Dutch life. A Germanappointed civilian governor headed the
state. ‘Gleichschaltung’ — the policy of totalitarian control over all aspects of Dutch life — was enacted. And the policy of ‘Arbeitseinsatz’ allowed the state to force ablebodied Dutch men into labour camps. “I know they took people. They took my brothers because they’d
been in the Dutch army,” Mallon said. “Things got tougher later when those guys with the black shirts, the Gestapo, came around.” Mallon’s father became a commander with the Dutch Resistance, which carried out sabotage and spying operations for the Allies. “My brother and I used to deliver messages for them. Paper stuff, we always delivered paper

people had nothing to eat but tulips and sugar beets. An estimated 30,000 people died from malnutrition during this time. Mallon remembers lean times but said he never knew they were lean. “We had no oil or gas and had to burn brush for heat. And I remember my mother got some things with coupons you took to the store,” he said. “My parents never talked about it though. We were just kids so we didn’t look at it the same way as adults.” Conditions changed with the arrival of Canadian soldiers. Mallon worked at a camp of Canadian soldiers in Hilversum at first, then joined a group that entertained soldiers in the region, a position he held for two years. “The Canadian guys were all so friendly and polite,” Mallon said. “They’d call me ‘Dutchy’ when they ordered beer and were just good guys.” Dutch people commemorate the liberation by celebrating Bevrijdingsdag, or Liberation Day on May 5. The experience with Canadians left an indelible impression on the Mallons—so much so that father Willem sold all of the family’s possessions and with his wife Henderieka brought six of their eight children to Canada two years later. Mallon’s sister Henny had already met and married Port Alberni resident Fred Drinkwater, who was with the Canadian troops in Hilversum as a signal core member. Man faces charges in standoff

Drinkwater’s family sponsored the Mallons, extending shelter and finding them jobs when they arrived in Alberni. The Mallons all became Canadian citizens in 1953. Mallon worked at a logging camp in Great Central Lake for two years before moving to the plywood mill where he worked until he retired in 1988. Today, the married father of three and grandparent to four grandchildren lives in Beaver Creek with his wife. An accomplished guitarist, Mallon also spends some of his time entertaining care facility residents with music. He may have been born in Holland but he’s Canadian through-and-through, he said. “I’ve been here longer now than I was there,” Mallon said. “I always try to enjoy life and take each day as it comes.” Mallon has never been back to Holland since he left. “My life is here now and my wife and I are happy with the way our lives are here,” he said. “But I know if you go there and say you’re a Canadian then they still love you.” For other Alberni Valley residents of Dutch heritage who relocated after the
war, life in Holland during the Nazi occupation elicits dark memories that are painful to remember. John Huysmans lived on Holland with his family during the war. “It was a time of celebration. I remember that,” he said of the liberation. “But I don’t like talking about the war. I don’t like remembering what happened then. I don’t even watch anything to do with the war on television.” Adrian van Gaans, 92, was 24 when Holland was liberated. But he too suffered in the years before the liberation and is reticent about the experience. “I was held in a slave labour camp before the liberation. But I don’t want to talk about these things,” he said. Mallon said when he watches the news that he sees wars still raging across the world, and he asks himself the same question, the answer to which forever alludes him. “When I see that stuff I think back to our experience and I ask myself ‘Why war, why do they still do it,” he said. “It’s so sad and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.” reporter@albernivalleynews.com

Charges have been laid against a man who held a standoff with Port Alberni RCMP for almost seven hours on Friday. After barricading himself inside his trailer last Friday night, Roy Marshall, 38, now faces one charge each of mischief, obstruction of a peace officer, uttering threats and breach of court conditions, an official with the provincial prosecutors office in Port Alberni said. The RCMP investigation is ongoing and further charges may be forthcoming, the official added. Marshall is scheduled to appear in Port Alberni
Provincial Court on Thursday. RCMP Emergency Response Team members from Nanaimo raided Marshall’s trailer on Omoah Place at 1:40 a.m. Saturday after several hours of trying to talk him out. Marshall was arrested and taken into custody. A 15-year-old girl who was in the trailer at the time of the incident was unharmed, and the USMA family services agency is now involved in the matter. A large dog that charged at officers and was shot is receiving vet care. Police initially responded to calls of an intoxicated man causing a disturbance at the trailer at approximately 7 p.m. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

Ottawa is proposing to revise its additionsto-reserve policy, which would allow aboriginal groups to buy property in any city then convert it to reserve land. The change could have farreaching effects for municipalities like Port Alberni, and that has councillors concerned. The policy has been on the books since 1972, and was mostly used to accommodate population growth. relations with the Hupacasath and Tseshaht First Nations, which already have reserve land in Port Alberni. “Certainly we would want them to come to the table but that’s not required under the agreement,” he said. “In general the process could disadvantage municipalities.” They could refuse utility servicing on a property, Watson said. “But if a property is already developed then it’s hard to turn it off.” The Vancouver report notes that the new plan renders local governments adjunct, and future involvement would be relegated to reviews and assessments instead of consultation. But consultation with the Alberni Clayoquot Regional District is a must, chief administrative officer Russell Dyson said. The ARCD reviewed the plan and made recommendations to the board. “Local governments should be included as a referral,” Dyson said. “And that service agreements be required in order to provide service to any addition.” The Hupacasath First Nation already has water, sewer and fire service agreements with the city in addition to quarterly joint-council meetings. “It’s part of a protocol we signed with them. We’d rather be good neighbours than bad,” Chief Coun. Steven Tatoosh said. The “Indian boogie man” scenarios haven’t reared their heads so far in the tribe’s business dealings with the city, he said. Councils from the Hupacasath and city are slated to meet next week and the issue of satellite reserves is on the agenda, Tatoosh added.

Remembrance and respect Help the hospital and get a flu shot On Monday, soldiers who fought in old conflicts and new will join supporters at Glenwood Centre, where they will pay their respects at 11 a.m. to comrades who fell and who continue to fall in modern wars. Some will consider Monday to be the last day in a long weekend. Some will use the occasion to get out of town for a few days, others will do some chores and even begin putting Christmas decorations up as we are starting to see around town. If you don’t see Christmas themes on television then you hear them on the radio. Christmas will be here soon enough. But here and now we shouldn’t forget that it is time remember. More and more we see people going about other things in their lives on Nov. 11, seemingly oblivious to what the day has meant for the past 70 years. It’s time to remember soldiers who were brought home to be buried, and others whose graves dot far away landscapes. It’s time to remember the parents of those who never came home. How would you like to have been parents whose son, with a whole life yet to be lived, has been killed in war and people aren’t even acknowledging Remembrance Day? It’s time to remember soldiers who volunteered to fight in unpopular conflicts such as Vietnam and Korea who never came home to ticker tape parades. It’s also a time to remember soldiers who came home but who continue to wage a war within as they cope with the debilitating effects of PTSD incurred as a result of war. It’s not that we should go out of our way to remember on Nov. 11. On the contrary, we should never forget. — Alberni Valley News

Ah, so an infected health care employee should wander the wards until symptoms emerge, and then go home for a few days of paid rest. What a perfectly stupid idea! Last week BCNU president Debra McPherson was warning about “chaos” at the new Surrey Memorial emergency ward, her latest of a career of media protests. The big new facility is already
overflowing, and more beds and more staff are needed, stat! Perhaps if better preventive measures were taken by nurses, doctors and other staff, this chronic “chaos” would be reduced and these unions would have more credibility. Mailbag: Feedback on Remembrance past and present War stories must be told To the Editor,
I belong to Operation Legacy, a group of members of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program dedicated to preserving Canada’s military heritage and teaching other young people how to carry on the remembrance message. This year, The War Amps is celebrating a major anniversary. Ninety-five years ago, First World War amputee veterans formed The Amputations Association of the Great War. The name was changed to The War Amputations of Canada when Second World War amputees joined their ranks. These men later started the CHAMP Program to assist young amputees like me. In addition to having had the privilege of learning about Canada’s military heritage from a young age, I also know what it is like to live without a limb – a strong bond that I share with war amputee veterans. Because of this, I feel it is my duty to ensure that the stories of war are preserved
and its lessons never forgotten. I have been fortunate to be involved with Operation Legacy by participating in local Remembrance Day ceremonies and laying wreaths on behalf of The War Amps. I encourage everyone – particularly young people – to learn more through The War Amps Military Heritage Series documentaries.

I’m everything Tom Fletcher et al accuses me of: an ignorant, superstitious, fearmongering, Dogwoodsupporting treehugger. I’m also a Europeaneducated humanist. We were taught to value history, culture, beauty, and nature, not only money, science, and corporate power. And I believe the First Nations culture and way of life are now threatened. I have traveled enough to know first hand how unique our coastal environment
is, and how fragile. The richness and diversity found here is unequalled on the planet, all 27,000 km of it. In the name of almighty dollar, do we want to become China, where 30,000 rivers have dried up? Or another deforested, drying and starving Africa? A dustbowl like India? You may contemptuously mention “Great Bear Rainforest,” but it happens to be the largest untouched rainforest in the world. I may not live long enough to see how this fight ends, but it’s a comfort to know there are thousands of people in this province, who share my values and fears. I bet that Elizabeth May or David Suzuki could give a few pretty powerful and undisputable scientific facts of their own, to combat the opinions of the abovementioned gentlemen. As for genetically modified foods (GMOs), check out what Dr. Thierry Vrain has to say. He is a former research scientist for Agriculture Canada.

Oh, deer, we have problem To the Editor,
Over the past few years we personally experienced a total of four accidents with deer at large on B.C. highways. The last one occurred a few months ago and fortunately only damaged our vehicle. However, under slightly different circumstances it could have caused the loss of both of our lives and many others. For these reasons mentioned I am wondering what other people’s thoughts are about animals that cause severe damage to our vehicles and bodily harm. When I read about cougars attacking humans I cringe. We also know that when apple season arrives we can expect bears at our property as fruit is on their shopping list. I don’t know what the total yearly damage is by just deer alone, but what I do know is that our damage over a period of seven years is about $6800 paid by ICBC. I am thinking of a large fenced wildlife area, maybe like our provincial park up north. What are others’ thoughts?
I know my thoughts are out of the box but not so long ago “No Smoking” was an out-of-the-box issue too. Maybe it’s worth thinking about.

Re: Request for proposals out for marine building. At Harbour Quay yesterday for lunch I was glad to see a few more parking spaces by All Mex’d Up and Cecilia’s. There are 10 or more established businesses in that area that hire people and serve their customers. How does Port Alberni City Council think the development —as I understand it—of condos in place of stores in that area is good for the economy? If the condos are built above the stores, how is that good for their business? This just doesn’t make sense to me. Our mayor keeps saying that the city supports small, local businesses. Could someone explain to us how this plan does that?

Demoltion of the Somass Mill dry shed is almost complete. All that remains are some trusses and beams in the car shed, which used to cover railroad tracks where boxcars were loaded. The demolition began in August. Western Forest Products, which owns Somass Mill, decided the building was taking up too much space, especially since it hasn’t been used in more than 20 years, WFP spokesperson Makenzie Leine said. So far everything is on schedule and there have been no incidents, she added. Many people have been watching the building’s progress and several have photographed the

demolition in its varying stages. The building wasn’t simply torn down, but taken apart meticulously, because contractor H.L. Demolition has been salvaging material from the project, Leine said. The roof came off first and had to be done a certain way because it contained asbestos. Some of the large wooden beams are being sold, but Leine didn’t elaborate on the customer. “Based on the vintage of the building—1930s—it would have been old growth timber. “It will go to further use in another application.” Demolition will be complete in the next couple of weeks.

A new outdoor exercise park at Bob Dailey Stadium could be in the works this year if all goes to plan, Parks and Recreation Scott Kenny said. The workout area would be located in the grassy area between the stadium and Glenwood Centre. It would be comprised of several pieces of workout equipment designed to use body weight as resistance. “It would be a good fit for the stadium,” Kenny said. The project was penciled into this year’s budget and would encompass a special surface, equipment and labour. If the project goes ahead then preliminary work would start this fall and the main part of the project would be completed in spring 2014, he said. The idea was first on parks and rec’s radar two years ago after lobbying by some residents as well as the Alberni Valley Track Club, which uses the area extensively. The club has donated $10,000 towards the initiative.
That, combined with $60,000-$70,000 left over in the track repair budget will underwrite the project, Kenny said. The track re-opened earlier in October after the surface was replaced. Parksville and Langford are other districts which have similar facilities, he said. There used to be an outdoor exercise circuit at the former figure-eight track in the trees behind Echo Aquatic Centre but it’s long been removed. “The equipment today would be a significant upgrade since those days,” Kenny said. The Alberni Valley Track Club has been a big booster of the idea since the idea first came about, president Michelle Butt said. “The track is our main training facility and our athletes would use it, definitely,” she said. “But we hope that a lot of other people would use it as well.” Butt said she hopes doing the circuit outdoors would catch on with groups like the rugby, football club and swim clubs along with the high school.

BC Premier Christy Clark supports the idea of a liquid natural gas facility near Port Alberni. In a broadcast keynote address Wednesday afternoon to attendees at the Vancouver Island Economic Alliance Summit in Nanaimo, Clark said that there is interest by a Korean company in an LNG export facility in Port Alberni. Port Alberni is ideally located for such a venture because of its access to the Pacific Ocean and to Asia, she said. The initiative is connected to last week’s signing of a protocol between the Port Alberni Port Authority and the Huu-ay-aht First Nation. The protocol

sets out terms of cooperation for further studying a transshipment container hub on 750 acres of land in Huuay-aht territory. The plan also envisioned an LNG facility as part of the complex. An LNG facility alone could be a “game changer” in Port Alberni, PAPA executive director Zoran Knezevic said. “There could be 200 jobs on an LNG facility alone with construction then operation of a facility,” he said. “It would have a significant impact in the Alberni region.” The government supports the initiative but further discussion about funding will hinge on more concrete commercial interest, Knezevic
said. A proponent from Korea is interested in an Alberni Inlet facility. If cemented, the deal could be worth more than $10 billion, he said. PAPA is working on an industrial suitability study on the idea, which should be finished in a couple of weeks, he added. PAPA is also researching an existing right-ofway held by Fortis that allows the gas company to run a 36-inch pipeline that already supplies natural gas to residential customers. It’s possible that the line may be twinned in order to accommodate industrial use, Knezevic said. Quad and dirt bike riders will face up to $2,000 fines if they are caught riding on city trails, Parks And Recreation manager Scott Kenny said. Kenny made the announcement at council’s Oct. 28 meeting. Parks and rec staff have been receiving complaints over the last two months about the riders and damage
they do to the trails, he said. Most of the complaints have to do with the trail behind the old Alberni District Secondary School on Burde Street which comes out behind the new subdivision on Carrier Road. The trail is part of the Dry Creek ravine system, Kenny said. “We get complaints about them on other trails but this one seems to be popular with them.”
The trail wasn’t made for quadding, Kenny said. The riders travel fast, chewing up the ground and spraying it off the path. “It creates a maintenance issue because our staff has to go in there and keep material on the track.” The fine is stiff, Kenny said. “But if people want to ride quads then they can go somewhere else and do it.” reporter@albernivalleynews.com Twitter.com/AlberniNews

Two weeks, two BCHL Player of the Week awards for the Alberni Valley Bulldogs. Bulldogs forward and captain Tryg Strand was named the BCHL Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 3, the league announced Monday. Strand garnered the honours by scoring eight points during the Bulldogs’ threegame road trip last weekend.
The team earned four of a possible six points. Strand had two assists and a second star nod in a win over the Coquitlam Express. He also had a helper in a loss to the Surrey Eagles and he finished with a five-point outing that included two goals and a first star honour in a win over the Chilliwack Chiefs. Midget tourney in Alberni The Van Isle Ford Midget Bulldogs are hosting their annual Remembrance Day hockey tournament this weekend. The eight-team tournament features teams from Surrey, Okanagan, the North Shore and New Westminster. All
games will be played at the Alberni Valley Multiplex. The Bulldogs’ last action was on Nov. 3 when they played an exhibition game against Saanich Tier Two in Parksville. The Bulldogs won 7-2. The win avenged a 5-3 loss to Saanich on Nov. 2.

Have you ever thought about writing a performance piece, but didn’t know where to begin? Portal Players Dramatic Society at the Capitol Theatre is offering two workshops entitled Writing and Creating a Performance Art Piece – Part 1 and 2 (Can be taken separately) Minimum age for participants is 16. The instructor is well-known artist Gwynne Hunt, producer of the Alberni Valley Fringe Festival and the Vagina Monologues. Hunt’s teaching style is very relaxed and she makes everyone

What makes a writer jubilant? For author Vicki Drybrough of Port Alberni, it’s being published. For a writer, seeing her/his words in print is thrilling; Drybrough is no exception. She sent one of her short stories, Macaroni & Cheese, to CBC’s Vinyl Café radio show in 2010, but she didn’t hear back from anyone. Months later, in 2011, someone from CBC contacted her to let her know her story was going to be read on the air. When she listened in, the realization hit that Stuart McLean, a professional storyteller, was reading her story on air. That was it, she thought, still basking in the excitement. But in 2012, she received a letter from the Vinyl Café asking permission to publish her story in their book if chosen. Now, it’s done. The book Time Now for the Vinyl Café Story Exchange is published and her short story— as well as few others from Vancouver Island writers—is now available to readers. Once a reader gets past the surface of Drybrough’s story, they will realize Macaroni & Cheese has nothing to do with the popular pasta dish: it is about a true relationship between a dad and his daughter.

Vicki Drybrough was surprised to find out one of her short stories, Macaroni and Cheese, is going to be published in the latest Vinyl Café book. She submitted it in 2010.
Drybrough has been writing since her youth. She has had small pieces published in literary magazines in the past. After retiring from teaching, she took a course with Derek Hanebury in Creative Writing at North Island College. The result is more writing and also— with fellow Port Albernians—the creation of a writers’ group, Words on Fire, that meets at Char’s
Landing on the last Wednesday of every month. Drybrough is pretty proud of her group and of their meeting place and its unique acoustics. Writers’ guests who come for a reading or a talk are red with envy, Drybrough says with a big smile. There is a surprising amount of writers in the Valley and she hopes that, one day, we will all know of each other and form
a strong supportive group. That’s a project that I hope will come to realization soon. One project for the future that Drybrough holds dear to her heart is publishing a book, a compilation of her many short stories, maybe adorned with some of her poems. ave you heard of the sunshine vitamin? Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that we get from the sun hitting the skin and converting it into a hormone. We also can get some vitamin D through food/fluid sources. The difficulty is getting enough vitamin D from the food supply, since our requirements generally exceed what we typically get out of food/fluids. In colder months (October to March), individuals living in northern climates, such as Canada, can not convert the hormone in the skin. The sun’s rays are too weak at this time of year. Due to these two reasons, many Canadians have a vitamin D deficiency. With a chronically low level of vitamin D, individuals may have a reduced immune system, which over time, may increase likelihood of developing conditions ranging from colds/ flu, auto-immune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, lupus, fibromyalgia, respiratory conditions, osteoporosis, diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Vitamin D is in some foods, such as salmon, mackerel, egg yolks, liver and is also in fortified foods/fluids, such as milk, some cereals, margarine and soy drinks. In general, the daily amount required by our body exceeds what is readily available through dietary sources. Many scientists and doctors who study vitamin D agree that at least a third of the world is deficient in vitamin D. Some scientists think even a greater

percentage are deficient. This is because we live as an indoor society, more so now than ever before in human history. Vitamin D expert, Dr. Robert Heaney states, “It’s now clear that our ancestral vitamin D status was a lot higher than most citizens of the industrialized nations achieve today.” A good rule of thumb for the warmer months of March to October is to check your shadow. Experts
state that in order to make vitamin D, the sun needs to be high up in the sky, high enough so that your shadow is shorter than you. If your
shadow is longer than you, the sun isn’t intense enough to help your body make vitamin D. Also, in the summer, you don’t need to burn to make vitamin D. To make good amounts of vitamin D, you should spend half the time out in the sun that it would take for your skin to turn pink. The recommended values for Daily Required Intake (DRI) amounts were historically based on preventing rickets in children and osteomalacia (weakened bones) in adults. As new research emerges, it has been discovered that there are vitamin D receptors in all body cells/tissues and hence vitamin D is required for the proper functioning of all body systems. Therefore, it is essential to ensure adequate intake. In winter months, this generally means that a

This is practical for people who require extra capacity but don’t want to buy a bigger or more expensive mid-sized or larger SUV. Under the hood is a 2.5L

So many cars to choose from, so few words available in this tight space! Yes, I know that’s the complaint of every writer but we truly do have a lot of choice today. And the quality of vehicles is so much higher than it ever was so there is much to celebrate. In the run-up to 2014, I will be testing a lot of what’s new and improved. Today, I’ll just offer you some models to consider adding to your shopping list. 2014 MAZDA 3 The compact car segment in Canada is the biggest by far, with over 20 percent of all vehicles sold. So, the introduction of the Mazda3 is important because it is currently the fourth best seller in this class. The outgoing car was already one of the best handling cars and now with a lighter and sexier looking body, this new car is both eye catching and solid on the road. The base engine is a 2.0L 4-cylinder with 155hp, thanks to direct injection. The larger 2.5L engine puts out a healthy 184hp. It is the interior buyers will care most about,

Starting at $15,995 and running up to $29,895, there is a Mazda3 for all budgets. 2014 Toyota Corolla Continuing with the compact car theme, the Toyota Corolla is the third best selling car in Canada but Toyota believes this new model can take the overall sales crown away from the Honda Civic. This new 2014 model is made, and partly designed, right here in Canada with our needs in mind. The Corolla now has a longer wheelbase for amazing interior space, especially in the back seat. The dash is wide and flat for ample
room and covered in nice looking and feeling materials, plus there is an available centre screen to use for the radio and backup camera. Powering the 2014 Corolla is the same 132hp 1.8L engine from the last model, with one exception. The LE Eco model has a modified valve system to improve fuel economy and pump the power to 140hp. The biggest change is the introduction of a continuously variable transmission for a greater range of gears, improved economy, and a smooth drive. 2014 Volkswagen Golf This new Golf will be made in Mexico along side the
Beetle and Jetta sedan and will go on sale in the spring of 2014. It is wider and longer than the last Golf but also significantly lighter and safer. The base engine will be a new turbocharged 1.8L engine with 170hp but don’t worry the TDI diesel is carried over. The sportier GTI trim is fantastic, with an estimated 225hp, in the Canadian Model, thanks to a new 2.0L turbo engine. The interior materials used inside are almost Audi quality. No price yet but building these new cars inside the NAFTA zone will save money and that will be reflected in the price. 2014 Jeep Cherokee The Cherokee is back and it looks nothing like the boxy
truck of old. In fact, this new, small SUV is based on the same Alfa Romeo platform used in the Dodge Dart. It is smooth and quiet and a pleasure to drive. The Cherokee is also the first vehicle in the world to be equipped with a 9-speed automatic transmission. The base engine is a 2.4L 4-cylinder with 184hp or the optional 3.2L V6 with 271hp, for just $1,300 more, offering good value. Not to worry Jeep fans, this new Cherokee is available with three AWD systems. 2014 Nissan Rogue You might notice a trend with my 2014 model choices are all compact cars or compact SUVs.
