ALTERNATIVE ENERGY

Turbines fuel debate At least one Nanoose Bay resident doesn’t want to see a rash of waterfront generators AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com

A dispute between neighbours could play a role in the future of alternative energy sources in the Regional District of Nanaimo. Syd Lee installed a 350-watt turbine on a 5.8 metre (19’) mast in his yard in Beachcomber, Nanoose Bay this summer to maintain a steady supply of electricity to his ham radio — emergency communications equipment in the case of a power disruption. He said he had his property surveyed and installed the mast a meter above the high-tide mark, on his property where there is the most steady wind, which an expert at an RDN workshop said was the most important factor. He said all the neighbours he contacted supported the installation but once it was up, his immediate neighbour Andy Lankester complained to the RDN, who informed Lee that it was in fact 14 metres closer to the water than the zoning bylaw allowed. Lee applied to the board of variance, but as RDN manager of current planning Jeremy Holme explained, “they are only allowed to consider variances based on hardship or very minor variances. They could consider an inch, or maybe a foot, but definitely not 14 metres,” Lee told The NEWS. Despite 15 letters of support and only Lankester speaking against the generator, the board of variance rejected the application determining it should be taken down. Lee then applied for a development variance permit from the electoral area planning committee, which will review the issue on Nov. 12. Their recommendation will be sent on to the regular RDN board for consideration at their Nov. 29 regular meeting. See A DANGEROUS PRECEDENT?, page A6

QUALICUM BEACH LEADERSHIP

Likely summer before new CAO JOHN HARDING

editor@pqbnews.com

Since he was elected to town council two years ago, Dave Willie has not shied away from being critical about the way the Town of Qualicum Beach conducts its business. On Thursday, the day after the town announced CAO Mark Brown is

retiring at the age of 53 after 33 years of employment with the municipality, Willie had nothing but praise for the departing top man at town hall. “Mark has been a part of town decisions for a long, long time,” said Willie. “One has to recognize that contribution. There may be things we didn’t agree on but we have one hell of a

town and he has had a place in that and we appreciate that.” Finding a hiring a successor for Brown won’t be a speedy process, said Willie. “I don’t think council has had a big discussion on that, to be honest,” he said. See IT’S UP TO THIS, page A6

EXTREME WEATHER PROTECTION FOR THE HOMELESS

Shelter open for the season Last winter, the shelter was open a total of 36 nights due to snow and cold temperatures

The Oceanside Task Force on Homelessness and the Society of Organized Services (SOS) announced last week that The Salvation Army will once again operate an extreme weather response shelter for the Oceanside region. The extreme weather shelter is funded by B.C. Housing, the Regional District of Nanaimo Homelessness Action Fund, The Salvation Army and the Oceanside Task Force on Homelessness. The shelter was available starting Nov. 1 and funding is in place until March 31, 2014. Operated by The Salvation Army and housed in The Salvation Army Church at 187 Alberni Highway, Parksville, the shelter will be open from 6 p.m. until 8 a.m. on nights of inclement or extreme weather only. Clients will be provided with cots, blankets, pillows and an evening meal and breakfast. In the winter of 2012/13, the shelter was open a total of 36 nights due to snow and cold

temperatures. The protocol for the Oceanside region extreme weather shelter is standard for extreme weather shelters on the Island. Implementation of the extreme weather response plan will be called when weather conditions are deemed severe enough to present a substantial threat to the life or health of homeless persons. Extreme weather conditions are defined as: • Temperatures near zero with rainfall that makes it difficult or impossible for homeless people to remain dry. • Sleet/freezing rain. • Snow accumulation. • Sustained high winds. • Temperatures at or below minus 2 Celsius, taking into account wind chill. The Oceanside Task Force on Homelessness was formed in May 2010, with representation from provincial and municipal governments, and many organizations and service providers in the Oceanside region. The Task Force is co-chaired by Malcolm Cox and Renate Sutherland, Executive Director of the SOS. — NEWS Staff/SOS

amilies and businesses got into the Halloween spirit Thursday in Parksville Qualicum Beach in a big way. In Qualicum Beach, more than 50 businesses participated in a trick or treat event for youngsters from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., organized by the Qualicum Beach Downtown Business Association. “As I was walking around with my kids, the parents were raving about the event,” said QBDBA chair Katherine Wilk. “The comments I received were along the lines of: ‘this is the first of many isn’t it?’ and ‘this is great, now I don’t have to go out after dinner’ and ‘I didn’t realize Qualicum had all these stores’.”

“I have no problem with the creation of electricity by way of wind or solar, in fact I am in support of it,” Lankester told The NEWS by e-mail. “The problem is that he installed the mechanical, industrial looking device, one meter from the high tide line in our little community…” he said explaining he’s worried about decreasing property values from the noise and unsightly device. He’s also worried the precedent will lead to many wind generators on the waterfront. The RDN’s Holme said a flag pole in that location would be exempt under the current bylaw, but since it was passed in 1987 there is no accounting for things like alternative energy generation. “Bylaws are a bit of a blunt instrument, one size fits all, they don’t take into account specific cases or how things change over time,” Holme said. He added that things change, including technology, social norms, demographics and economics and the variance process is how they are dealt with. He said a variance would not lead to any kind of legal precedent, but that if they do see a lot of applications for a certain type of vari-

ance (he gave the example of building height in a specific neighbourhood), they may review the bylaw. He said every case is considered by the RDN board based on it’s own merits and they are allowed to consider all factors. Lee said the RDN “is very supportive of this, but their hands are tied. The RDN is actively promoting ‘green’ energy with grants and workshops and flyers, but it’s hard to instal them legally.” He stressed the point of the wind power generator, along with existing solar panels on his roof, is to support his communication equipment “to help my fellow residents,” as a member of the Oceanside Emergency Communications Team of volunteers that works with the RDN and local municipalities. He added the generator will not save him any money estimating the total cost of the installation at $16,000 which will save him pennies a day at most. Lankester said he will continue to state his opposition at the next stage because he’s worried “that a dangerous precedent will be set,” and to convince the board “that this is a bad deal for every person who owns waterfront property inside the RDN.”

It’s up to this council — Willie “The first discussion we need to have is: what are we looking for? It’s probably realistic to think it’s going to be May, June or July before we find a replacement.” With a municipal election a little more than one year away (Nov. 15, 2014), does Willie believe it will be the current council that makes the final decision on who will be the town’s new chief administrative officer? “For sure, no question about it,” he said. Willie also said he believes Brown will take

his talents into another field soon. “He’s a young guy and there’s a lot of opportunity out there,” he said. “I don’t think Mark will be playing a round of golf every day — he will be moving on to do something.” The news release Wednesday announcing Brown’s departure contained no comments from anyone at town hall. The NEWS asked Mayor Teunis Westbroek for comment but he declined.

As part of Parksville and District Association for Community Living’s vocational program, the small group patrols the downtown area, keeping the streets and sidewalks free of litter.

The team is completely funded by the Parksville Downtown Business Association, which president Michelle Jones pointed out is funded by their members, without any public money.

Camera helps nab suspect in 20 minutes Oceanside RCMP say a Parksville man called to report that his vehicle had just been broken into at 4 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30. Police say an officer immediately attended the home and was subsequently shown high-quality video surveillance of the suspect at work. As luck would have it, the complainant had heard that his neighbours had fallen victim to thieves who had

gone through their sheds and vehicles previously, thus prompting him to protect his own property by installing a few surveillance cameras. The officer was able to view the video and quickly get an accurate description out to other officers patrolling the area. Within 20 minutes, the suspect (a 16 year old man) was arrested at a local gas station after identification was made, say Oceans-

ide RCMP. The suspect was subsequently released to his parents and is facing charges of theft under $5,000 and trespass at night. “Without the initiative of the homeowner, the chance of catching this suspect was very slim,” said Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman. “Surveillance footage is excellent evidence, and in this case, led directly to an arrest.” — NEWS Staff/RCMP

education & community

20 years of ElderCollege

One of Oceanside resident Sandra Walker’s greatest joys is sharing her love of learning and literature with seniors at Vancouver Island University’s ElderCollege, whether it’s the trials and tribulations of Jane Austen or the poetic talents of T.S. Eliot. Walker is VIU’s longest serving volunteer instructor — now teaching her 30th ElderCollege course at VIU’s Parksville-Qualicum Centre. “I love teaching ElderCollege courses because adults are so self-motivating,” said Walker, who holds a PhD and once taught literature at York University’s Atkinson College in Ontario. She began teaching literature courses for ElderCollege as a volunteer after retiring to Parksville in 1994. The contributions of Walker, and countless other community volunteers, will be acknowledged on Nov. 6 at a special celebration to mark the launch of VIU’s Centre for Healthy Aging and ElderCollege’s 20th anniversary. The joint celebration is open

to everyone, and will showcase guest speakers, a cake cutting, refreshments and interactive sample sessions of promoting lifelong learning and healthy aging. Lynne MacFadgen, project manager of VIU’s Centre for Healthy Aging, said the formal opening ties in perfectly with ElderCollege. “Our Centre’s mandate is to promote excellence in healthy-aging research, education and practice, with a special focus on seniors’ health care improvements, active and productive aging, and the creation of age-friendly communities,” she said. “An age friendly community is one that recognizes and supports seniors as vibrant and contributing members of their communities. This is a perfect description of the countless number of volunteer instructors and active community members who participate in ElderCollege.” Founding Board member Jack Hill said his involvement in ElderCollege has enriched his life.

“ElderCollege was born out of an idea by a few enthusiastic people dedicated to lifelong learning. It continues to serve the community well. ElderCollege gives seniors the opportunity to expand their horizons and make new friends.” The ElderCollege Society was formed by volunteers in 1993, offering eight courses to 75 people. Today it offers a wide variety of topics to more than 850 students. Annual membership is $20 and course fees are normally $40 plus GST. Everyone is invited to the joint celebration this Wed., Nov. 6, 2:30-4:30 p.m., at VIU’s Parksville-Qualicum Centre, 100 Jensen Avenue. The Centre for Healthy Aging is also hosting three Research Networking Luncheons in November: Connecting the Generations through Words and Rhythms Nov. 7, Alive with Music Nov. 13 and Storytelling: the Power of Story for Healing, Resilience and Meaning-Making Nov. 19. Proud to mark Remembrance Day

T

here were 16 million poppies sold in Canada last year, generating about $14 million in funds for branches of the Royal Canadian Legion. Big numbers for sure, but somehow it just doesn’t seem enough. We are fortunate in this part of the country to live among many veterans and others who have, or currently do, serve our country in the Armed Forces. Remembrance Day is a special day in Parksville Qualicum Beach, perhaps like no other place in the country. We look forward to attending ceremonies Monday in Parksville, Qualicum Beach and Bowser. We will never think twice about stretching our resources on a stat holiday to make sure we have photos and stories from all three of these ceremonies. It’s a no-brainer, coverage wise — we are a community newspaper and that’s what we’re supposed to do, the least we can do to honour veterans who are still among us and those who have passed. We are also proud to present, each year, a special section about Remembrance Day. This year, in Thursday’s edition of The NEWS, our section will be full of stories about veterans from many conflicts, right up to the war in Afghanistan. We are delighted our former assistant editor, Neil Horner, agreed to write the stories and take the photos for this special section — Horner has a flair for this type of community newspapering. There are, of course, more stories than we have pages, many more people out there who have made a contribution to this great country who won’t have a story about them printed. We think of the mothers and family members of those who served. We think of the incredible contributions of women at home, in the factories and other places, during the war efforts. We offer our thanks to all who have served, to all who fought abroad or at home to preserve our way of life. That sentence alone, like 16 million poppies sold, doesn’t quite seem enough. We ask the residents of Parksville Qualicum Beach, especially people with young children, to wear poppies and attend ceremonies on Monday. All of us must do out part to ensure we never forget. — Editorial by John Harding

In my opinion, the only win-win situation is to ensure that all dogs agreement in place between CUPE town are under control and/or on their own employees and Qualicum Beach, expiring

in January, 2014. Wage increases for the past three years amounted to 8.25 per cent. Aside from a small handful of junior employees, the minimum wage being paid is about $25 per hour. Given that the majority of workers have risen above that rate, and using $30/ hour as an example, it means that we are paying our people about $62,000 a year. Add to that the 20 per cent for benefits and you have a cost of another $12,500/ year, per employee. I expect these pay rates apply to most if not all communities on the Island. Now I don’t mind paying a decent wage to people who are qualified, such as trades people, who perform well, however it seems to me that these rates are way over the top for someone who is, lets say, raking leaves, cleaning out gutters or performing the many unskilled tasks that the town requires to be done. Having said this, the town workers as a whole should be commended for doing a fine job keeping our community looking good and operating well. I’m told that the town doesn’t really get involved in the actual union negotiations and that they allow the larger communities to settle the contracts and we just go along with whatever is decided. I don’t call this very good governance and it allows the unions to use all their resources to pressure one municipality into a settlement that the rest have to live with. I think it’s time for Qualicum Beach, along with all other communities, to become very involved in these negotiations so as to protect the rights and interests of the taxpayer.

critical thinking skills — throughout the Civilization series, one sees a massively in-depth environment which is terribly open ended with many paths to success ... and failure. One of the reasons so many students enjoy playing this type of game is that they can fail in a relatively “safe environment”, internalize why this occurred, make changes and then go on to succeed. The game does provide a measure of success in terms of the points acquired in relation to other leaders and civilizations that co-exist at the same time. Indeed, one of the major decisions to be made is “diplomacy or death” — is it better to trade and make treaties or is war inevitable and necessary at times? Concepts such as nationalism, trade, and the role of technology and religion are explored through the choices made by the student. Many parents may worry about the addictive nature of “gaming” — I agree, this needs to be regulated ... and taken advantage of. Instead of holding back or banning what students do in their spare time for fun, why don’t we channel this energy in order to explore or practice “inquiry” on issues that existed in the past and still exist today? Playing the game is only part of the overall process. Successful models require some form of meta-cognition or self-reflection showing what the student learned, how learning occurred, and provides “guiding questions” that connect to modern social issues. Examining one’s society and culture and then playing Civ IV truly brings home the adage, “the more things change, the more they stay the same” — so how can we evolve or change or “do better”? Game Based Learning provides opportunities for students to practice making decisions that could affect the whole world. New system for home sale stats Sales activity across the Vancouver Island housing market area continued to improve in the month of October, resulting in a 29 per cent increase in unit sales over this time last year. As sales momentum continues to build after a particularly slow market last year, we are witnessing a return to our historical averages across the board area. This month, VIREB joins the Canadian Real Estate Association and ten major real estate markets in Canada by adopting a new method of statistical reporting called the MLS Home Price Index, or HPI. Mirrored after the Consumer Price Index, the HPI calculates the value for a typical “benchmark home”, which is a notional dwelling that shares a specific set of qualitative and quantitative attributes that are typical for the type of residential dwelling in question. For October 2013, the benchmark price for a single-family benchmark home in the VIREB coverage area was $310,100, with an MLS HPI index value of 145.5. (This represents a 45.5 per cent increase since January 2005, when the index was 100). The benchmark price for a single-family home in Parksville Qualicum Beach was $347,300, dipping 0.4 per cent from last year. — Submitted by VIREB

BIRTHDAY WISHES

90 years young, sharp as a tack He recalls events 60 years ago with amazing detail JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com

Some call him The Cool Dude. Others know him as a dedicated husband to the absolutely delightful Leah, father, grandfather, great grandfather and philanthropist. Or you might know him as the guy who has a nice glass of wine for you, or some screech if you have the nerve. Or maybe you have tried his secret-recipe lox. Perhaps you know him as the man on watch over the French Creek estuary area, making sure there’s no illegal crab or bivalve harvesting happening. Or the bird-lover. Me? I call him Mr. Meeker. Howie Meeker turned 90 yesterday. We should all be as sharp as him when we are 90 years old. I was fortunate enough to meet him a few months ago, and I was nervous as hell. You see, when you’re a diehard fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, you don’t get to meet many people who wore that jersey — the best-looking uniform in all of pro sports — and raised the Stanley Cup. Yes, I brought my Leafs jersey to our meeting and yes he signed it. I was trying to be cool about it all, but inside I was downright giddy. If you’re over 40 years old, your first thoughts of Mr. Meeker will likely be

his work on Hockey Night in Canada. He was an innovator with what’s come to be known as the telestrator, breaking down the nuances of the game (“Back it up, back it up, right there . . . Golly Gee Willickers, ya gotta shoot the puck!”). There is so much more to The Cool Dude. As we approach Remembrance Day, it’s important to note his service to our country in the Armed Forces during the Second World War. His short stint in the House of Commons, while he was still playing in the NHL is nothing short of remarkable — he won a by-election in 1951 and did not seek re-election in 1953. He was inducted

SHIRLEY FRANCES PAWSON (Nee Chisholm) November 7, 1929 – October 27, 2013

Well-loved for her quick-witted sense of humour and warm, easygoing nature, Shirley was known around town for her volunteer work with both the SOS income tax program and various Grandmothers-to-Grandmothers events. She will be deeply missed by her daughters and sons-in-law: Heather and Geoff Praine of Comox and Wendy and Larry Crawford of Errington. She was predeceased by her daughter Janet Pawson in 1977. Shirley leaves behind six grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren who will forever miss her great parties filled with games, laughter and delicious food. She was our beloved matriarch. Shirley died peacefully at home, surrounded by love.

Petronella “Nelly Jannette Hillier March 7, 1942 – October 18, 2013

Nelly lost her brave battle with MS on Friday October 18, 2013. She leaves to mourn her passing her best friend, cherished companion, the love of her life, and husband of 34 years, Wally; sisters Leny and Joan; brothers, Eric and Nick. Nelly was predeceased by her parents Lena and Arie De Visser and sister, Conny. Nelly was born in Scheveningen, Holland and came to Canada with her family in 1956 eventually settling in North Vancouver. It was there that she met and fell in love with Wally. In 1996, Nelly and Wally relocated to Vancouver Island where they were to spend the rest of their days together. Nelly loved to sew, read, travel and hike. Wally shared her passion for travel and hiking and together they spent many happy years travelling the Hawaiian islands. When her illness made it too difficult to fly, they turned their adventures to Washington State with its many niches, lighthouses, beaches, and state parks to explore and hike. Their local favourites were Little Qualicum Falls and Rathtrevor Park. Nelly was a wonderful, kind, gentle person who will be most remembered for her genuine smile, quick sense of humour, and ability to spin a tale. PGOSA going strong after 20 years

The oldest member and one of the founders among honourees in anniversary celebration JAMES CL ARKE

sports@pqbnews.com

Spirits were high and the amazing Nelly Goodwin was in a great mood as more than 200 people turned out at Qualicum Beach Civic Centre recently as part of The Parksville Golden Oldies Sports Association’s (PGOSA) 20th anniversary celebration. There were booths and draws and plenty of food; PGOSA president Brian Ball had set up a rolling loop of photos of moments past and present, and the room had a great energy. “She’s the shine on the apple,” Ball smiled from his seat next to Nelly (see photo page A3), who at 102 and a delight to be around, still loves to laugh. Born Ellen Beatrice Godwin, in Edmonton, Oct. 14, 1911, ‘Nelly’ spent WW1 in Yorkshire England with her mother and aunts while her dad fought in Europe. The family returned to Edmonton where she spent her life until she moved to Oceanside in 2006 with her daughter, Gerri. Nelly the story goes, was always active in sports and loved to compete; speed skating, tennis, swimming, golf and hiking a few of her favourites. When not participating, she volunteered her time as an instructor for winter sports and along the way passed on her expertise and passion to thousands of students. Nelly downhill skied until she was 86 “when she figured her knees would lose their girlish shape if she didn’t stop.” She was however, first and

PGOSA Pete, aka Peter Kucey, left, with PGOSA president Brian Ball, was one of the founding fathers of the Parksville Golden Oldies Sports Association.

foremost a musician, said her daughter. “Today she would have been declared a prodigy but way back then it was considered an amusing talent and she was allowed to take lessons.” Over the years, Nelly also learned to play the ukulele, guitar, flute and the clarinet. And if they had reality shows back then, The Life of Nell would have been a hit. She was the second woman in Alberta to obtain a motorcycle licence, which she used to roar around Edmonton on her single cylinder Harley with her husband Don. Determined to live her life as

best as she can, she now resides at Halliday House in Parksville. Her extensive family travel frequently to the Island to visit with her, “and she is still able to regale them with her wicked sense of humour.” Nelly sang and played piano at Halliday House up to four years ago when she turned 98. “She loves to get out in the sun, loves to feel the wind in her face,” said Gerri. It’s clear Nelly loves to laugh, and that she did with gusto when a laminated copy of a photo and story of her and her Harley that ran in the Edmonton Journal June 30, 1976, was put in her hands and she was able to hold it

close and see what it was. “That’s me,” she laughed. “I remember that motorcycle.” She’s in a wheelchair now, but it’s only in the last seven months or so that she lost her ability to walk. “And she fully believes she’s going to walk again.” Her birthday was on Oct. 14 and yes, they made a big deal of it at Halliday House where she is the oldest resident. She is also the oldest member of PGOSA. Nelly has lost most of her hearing and she only has a bit of sight out of her right eye. She has a hard time speaking, but she is still able to interact, still able to communicate thanks in part to a felt pen and board. “Nell’s an amazing person. Nelly is a light in the midst of darkness. She lights up the whole place,” said Nelly’s personal caregiver of six years, Gayla Strong. “I don’t know what people are saying and I can’t see, it’s frustrating as heck, I see people are interested, and I do appreciate the attention,” she said. ALSO HONOURED on the day was ‘PAGOSA Pete’, Qualicum Beach’s Peter Kucey, one of the founding members and key players for PGOSA. Both Oceanside Mayors were on hand as the town of Qualicum Beach and the City of Parksville honoured Kucey with a plaque and the Town of QB a coffee table book commemorating Qualicum Beach Memorial Golf Club’s 100th anniversary”because he’s donated so much of his time to

PGOSA starting back in ‘93.” “He’s one of the founding fathers, he was instrumental in getting PGOSA off the ground and he’s been the president of PGOSA several times over,” said Ball. “He’s the one that’s been the glue, and at (82 years old) he’s still finding ways to make sure he’s intrinsically involved. He’s the go-to guy if you have a problem.” Kucey, 82, has participated in the B.C. Seniors Games numerous times and won loads of medals, but it’s the countless hours he’s put in promoting PGOSA and an active life style that sets him apart. “It was a total surprise to me (but) it’s all the members, it’s all our conveners, they’re the ones that make it all tick. Without them we wouldn’t be here,” said the always humble Kucey. “Numbers wise, I believe we are a one-off across Canada because of our size. Most centres, city’s, towns, across Canada, the senior population represents 8, 10 per cent of the population, while here in Parksville/Qualicum we’re representing 35 - 40 percent of the population, and as such because we have a sporting group called PGOSA, it’s a driver of sports for seniors 55 and up, and I’m fairly certain we’re quite unique to Canada in that lifestyle and having the kind of sports activities for seniors that we do.” — Check out Thursday’s NEWS for more on seniors staying active.

Generals lose in 4-3 overtime thriller to Nanaimo JAMES CL ARKE

sports@pqbnews.com

If push-backs were worth points, the Gens would have bagged more than one on Saturday. The VIJHL’s last place Save-On-Foods Oceanside Generals brought their work boots to the rink at Howie Meeker Arena Saturday night, pushing the league-leading Nanaimo Buccaneers to overtime in a thriller ,only to come up short 4-3. Easily the Gens’ best game of the season thus far, the retooled squad played fast, physical hockey and gave Nanaimo all they could handle. “That game could have gone either way,” said one fan. Both teams came out of the gates on fast forward: Chase Gaudreault opened

the scoring with a hard snapper at 17:09 on what was the Generals’ third consecutive power play, and Oceanside took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. The Generals, now 2-16-1-1, had led after 20 minutes only three other times in the previous 19 games. Nanaimo, sitting tops in the VIHJL standings at 16-3, tied it up six minutes into the second, but big, new forward Greg Johnson from Alaska buried his first with his new team on the power play 60 seconds later to put the Gens back up 2-1. Nanaimo scored at 12:54 and the teams were tied after 40 minutes. Nate Fitzpatrick scored at 11:35 of the third to put Oceanside up 3-2, and the Bucs got a break when the linesman’s

skate accidentally kept in a clearing shot at the blueline and scored at 12:41 for a 3-3 tie. The teams forced overtime and the Bucs stole the win 42 seconds into the five minute, four-on-four on a breakaway. “I thought the kids on both teams played a great game. It was real physical. It was really emotional. It was good, old fashioned hockey and it was fun,” Bucs’ head coach Brad Knight said after the game. “We had a lot of opportunities — I thought we actually deserved to win that one,” shrugged Gens’ head coach Dan Lemmon, and added at this point he’ll take the single point, and that “there’s lots of positive stuff coming from it. I mean we’re working hard, we’re playing hard, the guys are being physical, and that’s

something we’re going to have to do to win games in this league.” Nanaimo’s tying goal was made possible when a Generals player routinely chipped the puck out along the boards but it hit the official’s skate at the blueline, stayed in, and the Bucs jumped on it. Generals’ goalie Evgueni Makarski made 36 saves and was named the games’ first star. Makarski, from Ontario, made some dandy stops Saturday, including a huge pad save at the sound of the buzzer to end the first period. “He made some stellar saves for us, no question,” said Lemmon. “He’s been real good for us all three games that he’s started.” See New playerS, page A30

Having two teams combine for over 100 points in a football game may be exciting for the fans, but for the coaches, “it can be a nightmare.” Ballenas Secondary School’s varsity team marched down the field and scored on the opening drive, but it wasn’t enough as they came up on the short end of a 60-46 final to the Carson Graham Eagles from North Van in a hard-fought offensive slugfest played out in cool damp conditions on a slick field soaked from the heavy rains the night before. “Well, there wasn’t much defence,” Carson coach Buchannan and Ballenas coach Conn agreed after the game, which goes into the books as the most points scored in a single game in Whalers history. “That was my main concern,” said Conn. “I knew Carson’s running back A.J. Blackwell (ranked third in the province in AA) was good and I hoped the slippery, wet grass would slow him down, but I think it made it harder for our tacklers. We just couldn’t tackle (him),” said Conn. “I thought Halloween was over, but I am going to have nightmares of #22 running up and down the field for a few nights.” The Whalers put up a good fight offensively, and were also able to run the ball well as tailback Thomas Franks piled up 138 yards on 21 carries, and fullback Coltin Laplante 121 yards on 12 touches. Franks pounded out four TD runs of 8, 2, 14 and 43 yards. A.J. Messner added a seven yard TD run, and standout receiver Scott Childs, who was named B.C. High School AA Football Player of the Week last week for his 4-TD, 3 INT performance against Argyle, pulled down four catches for 78 yards including a 32-yard touchdown strike. The other TD for Ballenas came from a blocked punt by Steve Martin which was recovered by Josh Bouchard. “Our offense played great. We he had some

good kick returns, but our poor coverage on special teams and our lack of defence versus the run cost us the game,” said the always-concise coach Conn. “We need to fix this ASAP our we won’t beat Mission next week.” On defence, it was Laplante leading the charge and adding to his league-leading stats with 13 tackles. By far the leading tackler in B.C. High School AA football, Laplante tops the list of 20 having posted 93 tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery in nine games played. “Coltin is a great athlete who is a wonderful student of the game,” said Conn. “He has a motor that just does not stop — he never seems to get tired. In the big game he seems to have his best days, that’s what every coaches wants from his leaders.” The senior Whalers finished 6-4 overall and 3-3 in league for fourth in the seven-team Western Conference. The team now shifts its focus to the first round of the playoffs and figuring out a way to get past the Eastern Conference’s first place, unbeaten 6-0 Mission Roadrunners next week (time TBA). “This is a strange matchup,” said Conn, “as we have lost to them in the semi-finals the last two years, and our Juniors are also playing them this week as well, so it’s going to bring a lot of familiarity and emotion to the week at practice.” IN JV ACTION the Whalers blasted the NDSS Islanders 57-36 in their final home game to close out the regular season. Matt Price had himself a Whale of a game, piling up what must be a JV Whaler record 344 yards and four TDs on the ground. The Juniors finished 6-2 overall and 3-1 in league play, tied with the Mt. Doug Rams for top spot in the five-team Island Division. The Whalers open the playoffs Wednesday against the Roadrunners (2-5 for sixth in the eight-team East Division) at Merle Logan Turf Fields in Nanaimo. Kickoff is 4 p.m.

Chase Gaudreault’s staked the Gens to a 1-0 lead against Nanaimo on Saturday.

New players making a difference continued from page a28

All over the ice Saturday was AP Trent Bell, 16, from Nanoose Bay, called up from the North Island Silvertips of the B.C. Major Midget League. Trent is the younger brother of former Gens’ captain Nick Bell. “He was our best player on Friday night against Peninsula, finishing everything,” said Lemon. He’s pretty raw with his skating stride but he’s very fast and he likes to throw his weight around, so he’s a perfect AP for my type of hockey. “ Also earning props from the coach for his play was speedy forward Nate Fitzpatrick, 20, from Michigan.

“I thought he had a real good game up the middle for us tonight. “We’ve brought in nine new faces in the last two weeks or so, so we’re starting to solidify our group,” said Lemmon. “We’re still a team that needs to get some wins, so we’re actively always looking to get better. That being said, the group that we have in the room now is real positive, it’s all good kids in there now. Obviously we’re a team that needs to win, we need to win now if we want to make the playoffs, so we’re going to be doing everything in our power to win hockey games and develop the kids we do have here.”

ECHO PLAYERS

Make-up artistry comes to Qualicum Beach ‘I can beautify a bride one day and then be creating zombies for a film the next day’ BRENDA GOUGH NEWS Contributor

Expect some impressive makeup artistry in future productions by ECHO Players at the Village Theatre in Qualicum Beach. The theatre company has invited a recent grad from the Makeup Artistry Program at John Casablanca’s Institute in Vancouver to share her skills. The school is widely recognized as the industry leader in providing training and has been setting the standard for film, television and theatrical makeup artistry and innovation for over 30 years. Bree-Anna Lehto will provide makeup instruction for various aspects of theatre to Echo Players members as well as other theatre groups who form part of the North Island Zone. Lehto’s workshop Saturday, November 9 at the Village Theatre is booked solid. Lehto said that since she graduated from the program she has worked on numerous photo shoots, fashion shows, weddings, several full feature films and the Zombie Syndrome. She said being a makeup artist is very exciting. “Each job is different from the next. I can beautify a bride one day and then be creating zombies for a film the next day so it definitely keeps things interesting. One particularly exciting job was for a horror film I shot a couple weeks ago … I had to wire an actors mouth shut, create a ripped off scalp and orchestrate a risqué severed body part, all in a days work.” Lehto will be teaching theatre makeup which she said is quite different from film. “Nowadays film and television is shot in high definition, which is crystal clear and really shows everything on the big

screen … so from a makeup perspective less is definitely more. Theatre makeup is seen from a distance and stage lighting is much stronger than that used in film and TV so the actors features really need to be emphasized with much stronger makeup so the audience can see it.”

Layla nominated for vocalist of the year In order to win, she needs lots of online votes LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com

Layle Zoe has been nominated for a Maple Blues Award. The former Parksville Qualicum Beach resident released a video on Facebook upon finding out about the nomination last week. “I’m in absolute complete shock right now,” said a choked-up Zoe. “I’m extremely grateful to be nominated for the Maple Blues Awards — it is the biggest blues awards in Canada.” Zoe goes on to say she has struggled with the nomination process of the awards show over the years but has remained adamant that she would do things her way in the business. “This just shows that you can stay true to yourself and never kiss ass and still find your way to where you deserve to be.” But in order to win Female Vocalist of the Year honours, Zoe needs online votes. The Maple Blues Awards is in its 17 year and is Canada’s national blues awards program. Nominees are selected by a panel of blues experts including radio hosts, journalists, and festival organizers across Canada. Voting is open until December 7 and anyone with an email address is eligible to cast one. Winners are selected by voting blues fans across Canada, except for the instrumental categories, which are decided by the nominating panel.

GLASS INSTALLER

Windshield installs done right!!!

www.pqbnews.com

FINANCIAL ADVISOR

Helping You to Navigate Financially in a Changing World.

Does that mean that it can be done wrong?? It is amazing how many windshields we find that have been improperly installed. This summer in one week we saw 5 windshields that had little, and in one case no, bonding to the body. We lifted the windshield out with no cutting! Your windshield is part of the structural integrity of your vehicle and therefore using the proper methods and products is critical to ensuring a proper bond. How can you know that your windshield is replaced in a safe manner?

Tom Andres

A proper install requires a climate controlled environment to ensure proper temperature and humidity, and an absence of air borne contaminants that could negatively affect the primers and urethane bond. • Look for a properly heated shop with sealants and primers stored at temperatures that will perform as designed. • Check for proper accreditation of the shop and the installation staff.

250-752-5312 142 Fern Rd. E. Qualicum Beach info@northpacificwindow.ca

• Check to make sure that the facility carries proper insurance so you are covered in case of a loss.

DAVID & SHIRLEY NELLIST Raymond James Qualicum Beach

The convenience of speed or having it done in your driveway could come at the expense of safety and even the long term health of your vehicle. Improperly primed scratches will result in rust which can cause leaks in the future. North Pacific Window and Glass incorporates the latest glass cut-out technology that practically eliminates the scratches created during a normal windshield removal. We use the primers and urethanes approved for all makes and models. Temperatures and timing are closely monitored to make sure that when we are done with your vehicle you are leaving with a car that is safe to drive today and into the future.

Wayne Hupalo, Dan Turner

When clients of Raymond James Qualicum Beach walk into the office, they are greeted by name. When they phone the office, they talk to a real person. Shirley Nellist believes it is that personal touch that sets Raymond James Qualicum Beach apart from other investment firms. Shirley and David Nellist opened Raymond James Qualicum Beach in January 2006. They pride themselves on making people feel safe and at ease when it comes to discussing their financial goals. Finances can be complicated and a relationship with a financial advisor is one of the most professional relationships you can have. David and Shirley believe that part of their success comes from their ability to make their clients feel totally comfortable with the partnership they have formed. The personal touch aside, the success of Raymond James Qualicum Beach is in the strength of the entire team which makes up Raymond James Ltd. – one of Canada’s leading full service independent investment dealers. Nobody can predict what the future holds and saving for retirement is seldom easy, but the expertise offered at Raymond James Qualicum Beach goes a long way in creating financial portfolios that let people sleep at night and feel confident about their nest egg. Most hearing loss happens gradually and you may not even notice a problem. The people around you will notice it first. You may have to ask people to repeat things especially if there is background noise. You may miss things like the doorbell, the phone and/or warning signals. As the hearing loss worsens you may find yourself straining to hear conversations, and over time you may find yourself avoiding situations and losing interest in activities that you once enjoyed. Fortunately, the situation can be greatly improved for most people with hearing loss. Studies have revealed that persons with treated hearing loss through hearing aids and or medical treatment report better family and friend relationships, higher selfesteem, improved mental health, greater feelings of independence and security, better overall health and increased social activity.

How can hearing aids help me? Hearing aids will allow better speech understanding and listening comfort by automatically adapting to your listening environments, cushioning unpleasant impulse sounds without affecting speech understanding, and with the aid of new super-fast computer chips, sampling the sound around you at 20,000 times per second. Speech is made not just louder but crisper and more distinct.

ISLAND ARTS EXPO

Variety wows the crowd in Qualicum Bay More than 20 West Coast artists had their work displayed LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com

The Fifth annual Island Arts Expo had a great turnout this past weekend in Qualicum Bay as people came to view the stunning works of art. More than 20 West Coast artists had their work displayed in a variety of mediums from bright abstract acrylic to tempera paintings, bronze and metal sculptures, jewelry, photography and more. Guest speakers educated on fine techniques and inside tips in the conference rooms while local entertainers played guitar in the main hall. Entrance to the show and sale was by donation to the food bank, and last year organizers raised over $2,000 and close to 1,000 pounds of groceries. The Island Arts Expo is created and hosted by Island Arts Magazine and was co-sponsored by EyesOnBC Magazine and The NEWS.

LISSA ALEXANDER PHOTO

Michael and Els Schutte were two of the Island Artists at the Island Arts Expo on the weekend, Michael with his paintings and Els with her native figurines and paper crafts. Michael also presented on the techniques of the Dutch Masters.

Family doc now focusses on skin treatments Open house Thursday may provide some answers for your questions about your skin BRENDA GOUGH NEWS Contributor

Whether it’s time for winter scarves or bikini season, one thing that stays in fashion all year long is beautiful skin at every age. But with so many procedures and anti-aging products now available, people who want to look their best are not alone in feeling unsure about which methods are most effective. That is where Dr. Andy Biro, MD, and his team of trained professionals at Longevity Medical Aesthetics come in. After years of practicing traditional medicine as a family doctor and obstetrician in Qualicum Beach, Biro has turned his focus to skin therapies. With a diploma in Practical Dermatology, he is currently is

the only provider of a number of revolutionary skin solutions previously unavailable in this area. Longevity Medical Aesthetics offers a wide range of treatments for a variety of skin conditions and Biro says what sets his practice apart from others is his extensive medical training. “I started about six years ago with the cosmetic side and you just start seeing skin all the time and it progressed from there. I didn’t feel good about treating skin without knowing more about skin.” Biro pointed out that a lot of skin treatments are offered by non-professionals who have no idea what they are looking at. He admitted that even as a family doctor he had an insufficient amount of experience with skin and that is why he has done additional training, including cancer screening to feel comfortable with the full extent of his practice. “I have picked up lots of skin

cancers, especially in people with pigmentations. As you get older you get more pigmentation and some of that can be reflective of early pre-cancerous changes and I see a ton of those.” His practice includes working with various lasers that can address a broad range of skin conditions as well as hair removal. Treatments are done under the direct supervision of Biro to ensure the highest standards are consistently maintained. Biro said that isn’t always the case in other facilities offering laser treatments because the laser industry is unregulated. “What is scary to me is that I have seen more and more aggressive lasers being used by the lay community and that is a real concern. In terms of energybased devices, we have an IPL which is intense pulse light, and that is what people generically refer to as laser and what is really penetrating into the nonprofessional market.” He said it can be used for hair

removal, pigment reduction and the removal of small blood vessels like rosacea, but the flip side is that it needs to be used appropriately. Longevity Medical Aesthetics

is holding an open house Thursday, Nov. 7 where Biro and his team will be on hand to answer questions. It goes from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. at 208 First Ave. in Qualicum Beach. Call 250-725-6116.

Case can be made for closed-end funds

Have you ever considered purchasing a closed-end fund? Have you ever been presented with the option? If you are like many Canadian investors, the answer is possibly no. Certainly they are far less common than traditional mutual funds, and far less known. But that does not mean that there is not a case to be made for the closed-end structure. What ‘closed-end’ means is that once a closed-end fund is issued and subscribed to, no more shares are available from the issuer. If as an investor you want to purchase a closed-end fund after this, you will have to find another investor who is willing to sell. Similarly if you want to sell a closed-end fund that you own, you will need to find an investor who is willing to buy. In practice this is usually not difficult, since they do trade on the stock market
