Local faith leaders want Fraser Health to reinstate and fund the 12 spiritual care coordinators who were axed from hospitals in late 2009. The positions were eliminated throughout the region to save approximately $650,000.
But the Abbotsford Christian Leaders Network (ACLN) and the Langley Ministerial Association felt it was integral to retain the roles at their hospitals, saying spiritual care was as important as physical care. They raised their own funds – through local churches – to fund the positions for two years. Abbotsford’s share was $25,000 for each
year, and Langley’s was $12,500. Perrie Peverall was initially hired to spend two days a week at Abbotsford Regional Hospital and one day a week at Langley Memorial, with her benefits and pension paid by Fraser Health. She later began an additional day each week in Langley. Continued on A4

Lost hiker found

Emergency crews were deployed Sunday night to Sumas Mountain to find a lost hiker. Abbotsford Police were called when a 20-year-old woman – a student from Oregon – had gone for a hike to Chadsey Lake and failed to show up at the spot where she had arranged for a friend to pick her up at 5 p.m. The hiker was able to make phone contact with the driver, and informed her that she was lost. A team from Central Fraser Valley Search and Rescue was deployed at about 8:15 p.m. They were able to track down the lost hiker via cellphone at about 10 p.m. The woman was cold and wet, but was otherwise uninjured.

As nurses in Mission and Abbotsford continue to warn of serious congestion at hospitals, the provincial government has ordered a review of the Fraser Health Authority (FHA). On Friday, health minister Terry Lake announced a strategic and operational review to understand the regional health authority’s habitual overspending and hospital congestion. The health region is B.C.’s largest – it consumes $2.5 billion a year on behalf of 1.6 million residents – but it’s running over budget once again this year and Lake said it will require another infusion of extra money to meet patient demand. The Fraser region population has grown by 1.3 per cent a year over the past three years and the authority has received budget increases averaging six per cent a year
– more than the 4.8 per cent average for other health regions. Despite that, Fraser went one per cent over budget last year – the third year in a row it’s failed to stay within its allocation. It’s too soon to say how far Fraser will overshoot this year’s budget but another one PIPE per cent overrun would take an extra $25 million – money Lake said will be found from the core operations of the health ministry, not raided from other health regions. The review comes after unionized nurses said understaffed emergency rooms are packed at hospitals across the region.

licences.” Pipe works at both Abbotsford and Mission hospitals and said the situation has become progressively worse. In October at Abbotsford Regional Hospital, an average of 50 to 58 patients that were admitted into the emergency department were waiting for beds at any given time, according to Pipe. Some were waiting five to six days on a temporary stretcher or chair in the hallway before receiving a bed. Pipe said that some days, one nurse is looking after as many as 11 patients. BCNU advocates for a ratio of one nurse to four patients for an ideal balance between quality of patient care and cost efficiency. The report revealed that FHA’s budget allows for an average spending of $1,585 per resident, half of the amount spent per patient in the Vancouver Coastal region, and less than the amount spent in the Interior, Northern and Vancouver Island regions.

Shiroki also envisions opening a sake winery in Abbotsford in several years’ time, placing another destination dot on the winery trail map.

He is expanding rapidly, and doubled his acreage for this season. He discovered this week that his four acres have yielded about 2.7 tonnes of premium brown rice, more than triple the 800 kg that two acres produced last year. “I’m extremely happy. arrest, saying in a news release that “his recent behaviour progression is indicative that he may be back in a crime cycle.” They did not release further details, but described Goddard as an “untreated sex offender.” He is believed to be somewhere in the Lower Mainland or Fraser Valley. Goddard, who grew up in Abbotsford, has a history of posing in various false identities on the phone and online – through Facebook and other social media. He has created personas including a police officer, a teenage girl and a TV producer in order to lure young teens, mostly boys. He previously served a 20-month jail term after being convicted of invitation to sexual touching, communicating via a computer to lure a child, impersonating a police officer and two charges of breaching his bail conditions. Goddard was released from prison in February 2012, and breached his conditions that summer when he again adopted an alias on Facebook – this time posing as a landscaper – and hired two teen boys to do yard work. He was again sentenced to jail – 180 days – and completed that term in January of this year. Goddard’s conditions of his release include that he not communicate with people under the age of 18, not use social networking sites, and not use any electronic device capable of accessing the Internet. Goddard is 5’ 9”, weighs 150 pounds and has brown hair and green eyes. Police are warning the public to not approach Goddard and to call 911 immediately if he is seen.

Police trying to track down suspect
The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) has released a portion of the security video footage from an armed robbery that occurred last week at the Red Apple Food Store. The robbery was the first of two that took place less than an hour apart on Tuesday, Oct. 22 and involved the same suspect. In addition, police have identified the hooded jacket that the man was wearing during the robbery. The “Metal Mulisha Effigy” jacket was black, although it appears to be purple or blue in the video. Const. Ian MacDonald said police hope that the video and the hoodie will be enough for someone to recognize and report the suspect. The incident at the Red Apple Food Store – located at 32354 Marshall Rd. – took place at about 4:45 p.m. It was followed by a robbery at the Esso convenience store at 32375 Huntingdon Rd. at about 5:40 p.m.

Police have released this video from a robbery Oct. 22 In both incidents, the stores were staffed by lone female employees, and the suspect was carrying a handgun. “These robberies have caused great concern to our community and victimized two women who were simply attempting to earn a living while working at small businesses,” MacDonald said. Police released photos from video surveillance at both locations the day after the robberies. Although several tips have come in about the
person’s identity, they have not yet led to the man’s arrest. Anyone with information is asked to call the APD at 604-859-5225, text abbypd (222973) or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Police are also still seeking information on five previous armed robberies in Abbotsford and two in Mission. It is not known whether the suspect is the same in these incidents. Delaying a viable plan Abbotsford has thrown a public transit initiative under the bus – at least temporarily, since it’s likely to be reversed in the near future. Recently, regional approval for a public bus that would soon connect Chilliwack, Abbotsford and Langley was heartily welcomed by those looking for easier ways to get around the Valley. It was an idea that the Fraser Valley Regional District – on which six Abbotsford councillors serve as directors – and the City of Chilliwack found worthy of unanimous approval. But the proposal hit a political wall at Abbotsford council. Coun. Henry Braun raised concerns about the cost to the city, (Abbotsford would pay roughly $588,236, and Chilliwack about $333,764, while Langley would not contribute) adding that he didn’t think taxpayers were “clamoring for this service.” The mayor tried to make the plan more palatable by adding an escape clause into the motion, allowing the city to back out
at any point. But with the absence of Bill MacGregor and John Smith, who sit on the FVRD board, and the absence of Simon Gibson following his election as an MLA, the decision was left to six councillors. Mayor Bruce Banman and Couns. Dave Loewen and Patricia Ross stuck to the support they gave at FVRD. But Coun. Moe Gill changed his mind following the presentation, and non-FVRD directors Braun and Les Barkman voted against. The tie vote defeated the motion and drew the much-lauded project to a halt. The decision even surprised Banman, who vowed to use his executive powers to bring the initiative back for another vote. Assuming councillors don’t change their minds again, this plan will be back on track. Granted, the local contribution is not insignificant, but if it is agreed that getting people out of their cars to reduce traffic congestion and pollution, then this is a viable option that many Valley residents have urged, for a long time.

Other Hand According to media reports, it cost something like $6,000 to clean up a mercury spill caused when a Metro Vancouver woman dropped a thermometer and called 911. I guess with all the firemen, hazmat guys, ambulance on scene and all that, costs do escalate. Interestingly, and probably justifiably, the woman was initially charged with the full cleanup costs, rather like an intentionally out-of-bounds snowboarder/ skier who requires rescue should be, as well. However, in most cases it is the taxpayer who ends up footing the bill for these otherwise unnecessary costs. The ‘mercurial’ woman did protest, and eventually ended up being billed less than $400, which she apparently still considers unfair.
One argument put forward, despite all the horror stories of mercury contamination, is that the woman should herself have simply cleaned up the tiny amount of silver balls and chucked them in the trash. Had she done that, she would then have opened herself to improperly disposing of toxic waste, and potentially faced considerable fines. While today we are striving hard to eliminate toxic products in our waste, our environment and our lives, they are all around us in such simple, and safe when not broken, things as thermometers. Mercury has a tendency when rolling around the kitchen floor, to begin to evaporate, releasing seriously dangerous fumes. Such was not the belief, or perhaps understanding, when I was in school. I can recall in science class the teacher dumping from a vial a small amount of mercury on my desk. Push the mercury drops together and they instantly formed a puddle. Give it a little nudge and it disintegrated into tiny silver balls we could push around. We did all this with our bare hands,
inches from our faces, even taking the mercury into our palms to watch it roll about. I’m not sure if any of my classmates suffered brain or other organ damage from the exposure. As I recall, most of them went on to lead full lives,

Not only that, ‘back in the day’ mercury was used in dental amalgams to patch cavities and currently, thanks to pollution, we are all consuming minute amounts of mercury in the meats and plants we eat.
Most notably, the burning of coal to fire power plants or create steel produces most of the mercury pollution. The cement industry is also a contributor to airborne mercury, as is gold production. And the various fluorescent lights and batteries we use, if not disposed of properly, are further causes of contamination. Obviously caution is needed when dealing with potentially toxic waste, but did it ever occur to you that a broken pig-tail lamp we are all supposed to use, or a damaged flashlight battery, could create a substantial cleanup charge should you call 911 to take care of the hazard? On the other hand, if you clean up your own tiny mercury spill, what do you do with it? Shrug your shoulders, think one tiny little thing isn’t going to damage the world, and toss it in the trash? Or with the object in a little baggie do you try to find somewhere that will take and dispose of it properly? Good luck. All you can do is try to be conscientious and do the best you can.

letters Please reconsider I was very disappointed to hear that the transit bus extension to Abbotsford-Chilliwack was not passed at the city council meeting. Give your heads a shake! There is no demand? We have lived in Abbotsford for nearly 12 years and have been listening to the advocates for bus service to the Lower Mainland all that time. The business I represent has held six annual conferences in Abbotsford and each year we hear from our attendees or would-be attendees that if we held it closer to the city they would attend, but they can’t come because there is no way to come if they don’t drive.  An affordable, reliable transit option would improve attendance at our hockey games, conventions and entertainment events.  Last July we had one brave soul who did try the Aldergrove connector.  It took him four hours to come from the UBC area to Abbotsford.  I doubt that many have the stomach for that ride.  Personally, we have several family members who were very excited to think that they might be able to come from Vancouver to Abbotsford without having to resort to Greyhound.  I’m sure that many would love to step out of their cars and onto the bus, if they had a reliable service. How many from Abbotsford take the train from Mission to Vancouver? The few times I have ridden on it, it was full. No demand? Abbotsford crews fight three fires The Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service (AFRS) responded to a barn shop fire on Glenmore Road near Townshipline Road just before 4 a.m. on Sunday. Assistant fire chief Jeff Adams said people were welding in the barn and some-
thing caught on fire. He said the damage to the barn is likely extensive. About 30 firefighters responded to the incident. Fire crews were also kept busy this past Thursday morning with a pair of fires. The first, just after

Sunday’s title matches at the Masters Grand Slam of Curling featured fascinating demographically driven storylines. The men’s final was a clash of Canadian curling legends – Glenn Howard of Coldwater, Ont. and Edmonton’s Kevin Martin. Howard prevailed 7-4, scoring four in the pivotal fifth end to cap an undefeated week at the Abbotsford En Entertainment and Sports C Centre. The most difficult aspect of coaching, according to University of the Fraser Valley men’s soccer bench boss Alan Errington, is getting players to believe in themselves. All too often during the Cascades’ tenure in the Canada West conference, that belief had been lacking, and it showed. Over seven previous seasons, UFV didn’t make the playoffs once. But after finally breaking through this fall and qualifying for the postseason tournament, the Cascades carried

CURRIE Sylvia Anne (Nancy) It is with heavy hearts and fond memories that we acknowledge the passing of Sylvia Anne (Nancy) Currie on October 25th, 2013 in Burnaby. Born in England September 10, 1924, Nancy grew up in Vancouver, worked in Toronto at SickKids Hospital, married there and returned to BC, settling in Burnaby. She was a loving wife, mother and a loyal friend. Nancy was a supportive, compassionate, competent and capable woman. Pre-deceased by her husband Robert (Bob), she is survived by her two sons Callum and Graham, daughter-in-law Hazel and grandchildren Nelson and Fraser. She will be dearly missed.
FALK, Werner Werner passed peacefully into the presence of his Lord on October 30th, 2013. He was born on September 30, 1929 in Rosthern, Saskatchewan to Henry and Margaret Falk, the second of eight children, one of whom died in infancy. When he was six years old the family moved to BC, settling first in Black Creek and then in Arnold. It was here that he met Margaret Willms, who he married in 1954. During the next several years three daughters were born to them. Werner was a schoolteacher and later, a social worker. In addition to his work, he enjoyed many hobbies, including riding motorcycle, playing the organ, fishing, oil-painting, and writing. He started a wood-carving club which eventually became the Central Fraser Valley Woodcarvers. Whenever he could, he’d help his children with work that needed doing around their homes. He and Margaret were active in the catering committee at Bakerview MB Church, sang in the seniors’ choir and served as deacons. Werner also led a seniors’ Bible Study and started a seniors’ program in the church. In January 1988, Werner retired from his social work career but continued to work part-time as an adoption study worker for a private organization and later volunteered at MCC. At church, he organized seniors’ bus tours - a favourite destination was Chemainus where they watched many plays. Predeceased by Margaret in 2011, Werner leaves to mourn his three daughters, Cheryl (Ben Wall) and their children Charissa and Geoffrey; Coleen (Gord Lint) and their children Thomas (Roxi), Alison (Ben), Jared (Chandelle), and Brandon; Janet (Raynold Nickel) and their children Mollee, Tessa (Aaron), Sydney (Chris), and Madison, and five great-grandchildren (Ana, Jakob, Jackson, Amelia, and Hudson), as well as siblings and many friends. A memorial service will be held at Bakerview MB Church on Clearbrook Road on November 9th at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, a donation to MCC would be appreciated.
