Popcorn master ready for 2013 Oak Bay teen helping to kick off Scouts Canada’s fundraiser campaign Christopher Sun News staff

Scout Canada’s annual, monthlong popcorn fundraiser is underway and Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers and Rovers around the region are busy knocking on doors, seeking the public’s support. Those based at the 5th Garry Oak Scout Hall beside the police station in Oak Bay may want to compare notes with Chaim Weinerman. The Oak Bay Venturer scout sold more than $14,255 worth of corn last year, placing him second overall in Canada. “You need quite a bit of patience, dedication and a lot of hard work to go door to door after school, and coming home for dinner and going back out again,” he said.

EXPERT

Weinerman, now 16, went doorknocking throughout Oak Bay after schools on weekdays, and ventured out for another seven hours on weekends. He sold to about 500 people, who bought popcorn-based items ranging from $10 for a one-kilogram bag of kernels, to $60 for a large tin of chocolate-covered popcorn and pretzels. About 60 per cent of proceeds from the sales go back into the local scout club, with the rest going towards the actual popcorn costs and administration. First place in the country last year went to an 18-year-old Albertan scout, who raised more than $16,000.

Trees cool; find out why Tree Appreciation Day is Sunday in Oak Bay and the public is invited to bring tools to help plant trees in Uplands Park, and attend a guided nature walk. Between 10 a.m. and noon, Oak Bay parks staff will plant Garry oak trees, native shrubs and Camas bulbs. They will also give talks on pruning young trees and planting the right tree in the right place, plus give a workshop on winter moth banding. Friends of Uplands Park volunteers will lead the nature walks. “Trees give a tremendous FINE CUSTOM JEWELLERS amount back to the community,” said Chris Hyde-Lay, Oak Bay manager of parks services. “They’re not just something beautiful and aesthetic to look at.” Oak Bay has about 10,000 trees planted on municipal Sharon Tiffin/News staff boulevards. Oak Bay resident Chaim Weinerman, 16, sold the second most FINE CUSTOM JEWELLERS reporter@vicnews.com popcorn for Scouts Canada in the country last year.
