Midway’s own Bored Room Bistro was honoured as one of the Boundary’s best at the Small Business and Community Awards event last week, taking home the award for Family Friendly Business. The Boundary Country Regional Chamber of Commerce in conjuction with Community Futures Boundary put on the event on Thursday, Oct. 24 at the Grand Forks Curling Rink. More than 100 people jammed into the curling rink to celebrate the best small businesses the region has to offer, and, of course, to mingle and network. There were also plenty of tasty appetizers crafted by Devon Butterfield and served by members of the Grand Forks Secondary School grad class. “It went very well,” said James Wilson, executive director of the chamber. “We were very excited to see the best turnout we’ve had since we started. We were excited to see (local BoundarySimilkameen MLA) Linda Larson come and share a bit of what’s going on. It was also great to see a lot of new businesses that we haven’t seen before at the awards come out.” The winner of business of the year was Morrissey Creek Building Supplies. Winner of the service excellence award for a business was Jogas Espresso Café, while Cyndi Zibin was selected for service excellence by an individual. The voting was done by the community by voting through Survey Monkey or mailing in a flyer. Continued on page 8

Juniors welcome in the den CRAIG LINDSAY Grand Forks Gazette

Budding young inventors in the Boundary could find themselves on the junior version of the popular CBC show Dragon’s Den. Junior Dragon’s Den is open to students in grades 8-10 (junior) and grade 11-12 (senior) in the West Kootenay/Boundary area. The program is a West Kootenay wide initiative and call to action for student entrepreneurs, aged 12-17, to create their own summer job/business. “We believe it’s going to be a great opportunity for young entrepreneurs to receive guidance to develop their business plans,” said Andrea Zibin, case manager for Community Futures Boundary. “They can also receive start-up funding for their business or RESP contributions. We’d love to see Boundary youth challenge those students over the hill.” To qualify, students are required to submit a business concept paper for their business idea and a brief 1.5-2 minute video elevator pitch, ex-

Each applicant business will be featured online at juniordragonsden.ca, as well as through a variety of social and traditional media outlets leading up to the final competition and show. The top five junior dragons will then pitch their refined business idea June 6 at a live show format at the Charles Bailey theatre in Trail to a panel of local West Kootenay dragons. The first, second and third place winners from each age category will receive cash prizes and awards toward the start-up costs of their respective business, while the fourth and fifth place candidates will receive parting gift packages.

Most of it will be done over the next few weeks and then finished with another coat in the spring. The society sponsored a Halloween party last Sunday. Pumpkins were supplied for the kids to carve while the Lions cooked hot dogs, all sponsored by the RCCMS and CAPC. The goal is to have more of these community and family type events so people can come and see what Rock Creek Community Medical Society is all about.

Emcon Services generously supplied gravel to build up the medical clinic’s parking lot, then graded and packed it. Workers returned the next day delivering barricades.

A DIVISION OF BLACK PRESS – PRINTED EVERY THURSDAY. Mailing address: Box 99, Greenwood, B.C. V0H 1J0 Street address: 318 South Copper Avenue, Greenwood, B.C.

Letter from the publisher I don’t write opinion pieces THE PUBLISHER’S anymore. I haven’t had to since DESK Pat Kelly took over the reigns of writer at the Boundary Creek Times. And he has done a terrific job at it—far better than I ever would have. However, I certainly wouldn’t have guessed it on that first day CHUCK BENNETT that I met Pat. The story of how I met Pat and how he came to be the new reporter at the Boundary Creek Times is one of my favourites because quite literally Pat hired himself into this job. We had an opening for a new reporter and Pat applied. We decided to meet for a coffee in Midway. I had assumed it was for me to interview him. In the end, it turned out to be the other way around. We met in Midway because being short a reporter meant I was going to cover the council meeting that night and Pat was still on council so we walked over together. It was at this meeting that Pat actually hired himself. “I just want to make sure the rest of council is okay with me taking the reporter’s job at the Boundary Creek Times.” Everyone in the room said it was okay. Pat then looked over at me and nodded to let me know we were good to go. After the meeting he asked what would be a good day to start? I don’t remember what I said, but I do remember being a bit startled. I had only just met him and to be completely honest, Pat wasn’t exactly the stereotype of a cub reporter. He wasn’t young, didn’t look super energetic and had no experience. In fact, after the interview I hadn’t actually planned to hire him. But I also admired what he had just done so I went along with it. I don’t think I ever actually offered him the position. He just started working. And thank goodness for all of us that he did. Pat is a rare gem in our industry—a guy who cares about everyone else and gives more than he receives—always. From a guy who knew nothing about being a reporter, he has taught me more about community journalism than all of my years in this business. I am so grateful that he chose to give himself this job. But today Pat is the one that needs us to give to him. Pat lost his Special K this week. Pat’s wife Pam died on Sunday morning and we are all mourning her loss. It is also why I have to write the opinion piece this week and I apologize that it isn’t up to Pat’s usual standards. But we are going to need some patience to help support Pat through this tragedy. Please understand that there may be some events that we won’t be able to attend and stories that won’t get written for the next little while. We hope you all understand and will help us support Pat through this sad time. I know you will and I just wanted to say thank you in advance. Sincerely, Chuck Bennett, Publisher Boundary Creek Times

Meter charge gross injustice Editor, The Times:

An open letter to the Honourable Bill Bennett, Minister of Energy and Mines: I read with great concern an item in our local paper, the Grand Forks Gazette (Wed. October 9, 2013), about your cabinet order to the BC Utilities Commission to make sure they approve fees high enough to cover costs of customers opting out of BC Hydro’s smart meter program. This is a frightening order. Are you fully aware of the possible consequences of these new meters, adding even more invasion of electro-magnetic frequencies (EMFs) to your immediate environment? Are you aware of the health risks that may occur? We are already being bombarded by EMFs from satellites, radio towers, and the new technologies of wireless internet, cell phones and more. We do not know the risks and how they will play out in the next 20 years. There are already noticeable changes in people’s memories, as both young and old find themselves losing words, unable to complete sentences. It’s not Alzheimer’s disease, it’s the disease of new technology, interfering with our own natural electrical and magnetic ener-

gies within our bodies. And never mind the consequences of these EMFs on the residents of metal trailers and mobile homes that are like conductors for energy. And now you insist those who wish to maintain their health must pay BC Hydro when they opt out of the new meters. You insist they pay for a gross financial error made by the corporation in purchasing the meters in the first place without due research. This is tantamount to tyranny, forcing the public to pay for another’s mistakes. In addition, you state you can turn the ‘radio off ’. Sir, this is not a radio signal—this is an invasive EMF. I therefore suggest you reconsider this situation and think of human need and health before thinking of corporate pocket books and penalties. As a suggestion, we here in the Boundary are serviced by FortisBC which also provides our natural gas. A meter reader, for that is what the penalty is for, to pay a meter reader, can cover both electric and gas meter readings at the same time. Does it really cost each resident $35 for the five minutes it takes to read a meter? This is gross injustice. Rosemary Phillips, Christina lake

Perils of ‘entitlement state’

VICTORIA – With the B.C. and federal governments once again struggling to climb out of deep operating deficits, it’s a good time for the release of Mark Milke’s book Tax Me, I’m Canadian. An update of the same title published 12 years ago, the book retains the history of taxes in Canada, detailing how Canada’s tax system was initially built to mimic the United States system in the late 19th century. Beyond the history, it is mostly new material. Included are chapters on the global meltdown of 2009, the surge of pension liabilities as the baby boomers retire and the flawed logic behind the “Occupy” and “Idle No More” protests. Some readers will immediately note that Milke works for the Fraser Institute and was previously B.C. director of the Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation. But the book is not just an argument for cutting taxes. It also dismantles persistent myths that income taxes are illegal, and launches a broadside on what Milke calls “Canada’s corporate welfare carnival.” Many people will be able to identify some top names in the government subsidy game: Bombardier, General Motors, even poor old Rolls Royce Canada. Some will also be well aware that our supposedly tight-fisted Conservative federal government has continued to pour out “regional development” and other funds to every part of the country. But I did not know that Industry Canada grants were handed out to pizza parlours (including the remote pizza-starved village of Kamloops), or to help open gas stations or convenience stores in Kelowna, Vernon and Chilliwack. Milke makes a useful point for B.C. about royalty rates for timber, natural gas and other resources. They are resource rents, and if they are too high the tenants will move out. Reducing them isn’t a subsidy, especially if it leads to big revenue gains as B.C.’s unconventional shale gas incentives have done. On the Occupy movement: The infamous

“one per cent,” who in Canada earn $250,000 a year or more, earned 10 per cent of all income and paid 20 per cent of all taxes in 2010. The bottom 73 per cent of tax filers paid just 17 per cent of all taxes. About a third paid no tax at all. On Idle No More: When Attawapiskat Chief Teresa Spence played to the Ottawa media with her soup strike, former Liberal leader Bob Rae suggested a nearby diamond mine should share more revenue. Milke omits the substantial support and employment that mine provides, and glosses over the misguided blockades that disrupted that and other job-creating enterprises. But he does detail the disastrous effects of passive resource wealth bestowed on impoverished aboriginal communities, and contrasts it with the success stories of reserves that build their own enterprises through hard work. On public sector pensions: Milke notes that historically, public employees traded higher wages for better benefits and job security. Now their wages are generally higher, and taxpayers have to cover their personal pension contributions (as a portion of those wages) as well as the employer contributions, plus the “defined benefit” payout, which has to be subsidized far beyond what the pension fund can support. On the debt-financed welfare state, there are memorable observations, like this one: “For the record, the generous Quebec welfare state and its ostensibly more progressive model are paid for in part with the taxes of other Canadians; Quebec is merely the North American equivalent of Greece.” The recent B.C. political crisis over adoption of the harmonized sales tax showed that there is too much emotion and too little knowledge about how taxes work. This book is a step towards addressing that. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalNews.com Twitter:@tomfletcherbc E-mail: tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Happy Halloween! The Midway Community Association hosted a Halloween dance last Saturday night at the Midway hall which drew witches to angels and everything in between for a fun filled night. Young and old danced the night away with music being provided by the Blues Band (Undercover). “It was a huge success with close to 100 people that came out. We had costume prizes and door prizes that were generously donated by various businesses in Midway and Greenwood. It was just a fun night! said Cat Kappes, one of the organizers of the event.

Carving up a good time

There was a pre-Halloween pumpkin carving party at the Rock Creek Medical Clinic on Sunday where pumpkins were supplied by the medical society for kids young and old to carve. Lunch was also provided with the Kettle Valley Lions Club on hand to cook the hot dogs. There were spooky desserts, coffee and hot chocolate and lots of scary pumpkin faces. Congratulations to RCCMS director Issy McLean for carving her first pumpkin after..... 59 years? PHOTO: SUBMITTED

Heliport opens Linda Larson, Boundary-Similkameen MLA; Glenn Sutherland (second from left), Interior Health board director; and Les Cleverly, manager critical care operations, B.C. Ambulance, watch as Ron and Linda Clifton cut the ribbon to officially open the new heliport at the Boundary Hospital in Grand Forks on Oct. 28. The heliport was made possible by a $200,000 donation from the Clifton family and honours the memory of Gordon and Jean Clifton, long time Grand Forks and Christina Lake residents, and parents of Ron. The heliport will be used by the B.C. Ambulance Service dedicated emergency helicopter in Kamloops and other contracted helicopter companies. The new heliport will mean that critically ill patients requiring helicopter transportation can leave straight from Boundary Hospital instead of traveling via ambulance to the Grand Forks Airport.

Phoenix hill faces financial challenge CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette Reporter

With no provincial funding available until August 2014 at the earliest, Phoenix Mountain Ski Hill is hoping for support from local government to help operate for the upcoming season. Phoenix has been around since 1969 offering a local ski opportunity for residents and tourists alike. The ski hill is looking at opening in mid-December, usually when the children are out of school. “We open through the whole school holiday,” said Barb Cornelius, administrator at Phoenix Mountain. “We close Christmas Day, but we’re open every other day. January and February we run Friday through Tuesday. We’re closed Wednesdays and Thursdays. We run the school program up there Mondays and Tuesdays. In March, we go down to just weekends.” Cornelius says she hopes the community sees the ski hill as being a great recreational facility in the region. All the school kids in the Boundary have an opportunity to go up to the hill and have a lesson, and time to ski at a reduced rate, she said. “It introduces a lot of people to skiing that way,” said Cornelius. “It also helps get the parents back into skiing when they go out with their kids. It’s a sport where the whole family can do it together. Most other sports like hockey or soccer are a spectator sport for the parents. There’s a lot of traveling involved. ➤ Granby Buys Its First Phoenix Mine – “Stephen H.C. Miner, president of the Granby Rubber Company of Granby, Quebec, announced the purchase of 700,000 shares in the Knob Hill Mining Company, which owns the Knob Hill mine in Greenwood Camp (ed. - soon to be renamed Phoenix). The company has decided to extensively develop the property this spring, along with the adjoining Old Ironsides mine in which it has a heavy interest.” ➤ Rossland Railway King Sells Out To CPR – “Mr. F. Augustus Heinze, the Rossland railway king, has sold out his railway and smelter in Trail to the Canadian Pacific Railway Company. The purchase of the Heinze railroad will give the C.P.R. direct entrance into Rossland, without constructing a railway to Robson. It will also remove Heinze’s opposition to its coming into the Boundary Creek district.” ➤ “Life Is Short” Advertisement – Rendell & Co. have an interesting ‘hook’ to their latest store advertisement. “Life is Short!! And but a very small percentage of mankind live out their allotted span. Over some of the things that cut life short we have some control; one of the most deadly of these is impure Baking Powder. You can avoid this by using ‘Schilling’s Best’ Baking Powder. We carry it and have enough on hand to RAISE THE TOWN.” ➤ Corporal Punishment in Midway – “Last week, the school directors held an investigation at the school house as to corporal punishment inflicted by the teacher, Miss McKenzie, on the scholars, and especially on one, whose parents do not seem to believe in the old adage, ‘spare the rod and spoil the child’. But after a thorough examination of facts, the trustees exonerated the teacher and advised her to use the rod with discretion whenever necessary.” ➤ Gold From Silver – “The Spokane Spokesman-Review reports that a small scrap of yellow metal was submitted to Mr. Fasset for assay and his test showed that it was 70 per cent pure gold; 20.4 per cent silver; and 9.6 per cent baser metal. This bit of metal came from the laboratory of Professor Stephen H. Emmons, the chemist who has startled the world with the announcement that he has discovered the secret that has been sought by the alchemists and sages of all ages, the transmutation of silver to gold. If Professor Emmons is to be believed, this sample of his product, which he calls argentaurum, was made from a Mexican silver dollar.” ➤ Navigation Of The Okanagan – “The United States government is about to make navigable the Okanagan River from where it flows into the Columbia River to Osoyoos Lake, a distance of 80 miles… the entire length of the river in British Columbia can also be made passable for steamers of light draft, provided the Dominion government will make navigable those portions of the river that connect Okanagan, Vaseux and Dog (ed. – now Skaha) lakes.”

Lida Fair entertains the crowd at Pumpkinfest with a “spooky” Halloween poem written by her husband, John Fair.

Fest for pumpkins

The 4th annual Pumpkinfest, sponsored by Discover Rock Creek was held last Saturday, Oct 26 at the West Boundary Elementary School gymnasium. “It was very successful and fun this year,” said organizer Pat Pownall. “We sold all the pumpkins raising over $1,000. There were many entertainers and a wonderful slide show presented by John Hibberson entitled Riversong – the music of the Kettle River.” JOHN AND LYNN TRIBE

Smartphone avalanche search applications that are marketed as avalanche rescue systems are not recommended, says the Canadian Avalanche Centre (CAC). Three European-made apps are presenting themselves as economical alternatives to avalanche transceivers, the electronic device used by backcountry users to find buried companions in case of an avalanche. After close examination, the CAC has found a number of issues with the technology. Two of the main issues are compatibility and frequency range. Other critical issues include battery life, robustness, reliability and interference
