The Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation provides funding for equipment and services at NRGH, Dufferin Place Extended Care Facility (Nanaimo), Trillium Lodge (Parksville), and Eagle Park Health Care Facility (Qualicum Beach). NRGH is the primary care facility for the communities identified on the map; it is also designated “regional referral hospital” for all areas north of the Malahat.

Greetings from the Foundation! Happy 35th! The Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation turned a respectable thirty-five years old this year. In addition, the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH) celebrated its 50th year in operation! In fact we have reached many milestones in 2013 and would like to recognize your generosity, hard work, and commitment to healthcare; you made it possible! It is time that we stand back and realize what we have created together since our first fiscal year in 1977-1978, when our charitable status was awarded and we began to build an organization based on integrity and ethical standards second-to-none.

With your help, 2013 marked the 20th Anniversary of Lotto for Life, the 10th Anniversary of Run for Life, and Golf for Life celebrated its 20th year in September. We can never say it enough, “Thank You!” Your support, your belief in our purpose, and your generosity makes our work possible. Moreover, your precious funds purchase lifesaving equipment for Central Island Facilities. Which brings us to yet more exciting news; we are pleased to report that with your donations and pledges we have reached our goal of $4 million for the purchase of equipment in the New Emergency Department at NRGH. We announced our goal four years ago and together we made it happen. This is your gift to the people of Central Vancouver Island, the priceless possibility of healthcare excellence close to home. Thank you! Sincerely, Christine McAuley Board Chair

Our Events

The Foundation Family

For the last three years each of the Foundation’s events has been directed towards the new Emergency Department expansion at NRGH; the 2012/13 fiscal year was no different! The Foundation’s goal to raise $4 million for new equipment was largely aided by all lottery tickets sold, run registrations & pledges, and golf participation. These have been key events in the success of the campaign and we thank you for your help.

Code Brew

In September 2012 the 19th Golf for Life Charity Classic welcomed a full contingent of golfers and raised more than $95,500. In January 2013 tickets went on sale for our 20th Lotto for Life fundraiser. Ticket sales were down slightly from the previous year, 4,524 of the 5,000 available tickets sold – that’s 91%. Wayne and Clara Newman of Qualicum Beach were the lucky winners of the $100,000 Grand Prize! In May we co-hosted the most successful Run for Life to date in partnership with Financial Institutions from across Central Vancouver Island. The 10th Annual Run raised $32,000 thanks to 200 enthusiastic participants and their pledges, and 40 volunteers! It is thanks to each of our supporters that we are able to fund healthcare care. Thank you for seeing a need and stepping forward to help.

Financial Highlights Funding Uses

Code Brew is the coffee kiosk conveniently located in the lobby of NRGH. It is also owned and operated by the Foundation. Code Brew is special for many reasons. Namely, it often provides first-time employment to many high school students, but it is also staffed by a dedicated group of volunteers who give time and energy for healthcare. Code Brew is also a revenue generating business and all proceeds are reinvested back into healthcare. Staff, patients, and visitors are literally fundraising when they stop by for a coffee and a snack. The coffee kiosk averaged 409 customers a day over the last fiscal-year (July 1st, 2012 – June 30th, 2013). They sold almost a quarter of a million food items last year, which included 75,000 cups of coffee.

The Nanaimo Lifeline Program is owned and operated by the Hospital Foundation. In the last fiscal year, our Lifeline Program achieved a net growth of 49 clients. This is the result of 509 new installations and 460 units returned for various reasons. This high rate of return is normal as a majority of our clients are between the ages of 80 and 106. The graph indicates that net growth occurred in District 69 or Oceanside area, where the percentage of total clients rose from 31% to 33%.
