COMOX VALLEY — North Island College (NIC) will continue to grow its healthcare and trades programs, international education, pathways to other postsecondary institutions and physical space for students. The college’s new president John Bowman just started his new position a few weeks ago, and he says his main aim is to build on the college’s successes. “North Island College is a very successful institution and an institution that’s of great importance to the region, to all of our communities,” says Bowman, pointing out the college has already made progress in many areas. “So, really my vision is to continue to support and encourage the success the college has been having over the last number of years, and there’s certainly new opportunities that are going to present that we’re going to pursue.” Bowman was president and CEO of the College of New Caledonia, which also has a selection of regional campuses, for seven years before he came to NIC to replace retiring president Jan Lindsay. Bowman has worked in the postsecondary system for 22 years. Bowman notes the two new hospital projects, here and in Campbell River, are a driver for the college to increase its health sciences programming, “so that’s going to be a big priority.” Trades programs will also continue to expand in the coming years, he adds, noting the much-discussed

skilled trades worker shortage. NIC’s international education program is another area he plans to expand in the future. “We’re excited about the potential for international, both to bring students here, as well as to send our students overseas to gain international experience and learn about the world at large,” says Bowman, noting the program is relatively small, but it’s growing,
and it’s financially self supporting. Bowman will also continue to build on agreements with other institutions established by Lindsay, such as the University of Victoria Dual Admission and Guaranteed Admission programs. Government funding is an ongoing challenge, says Bowman. “I think the biggest challenge we face is that the needs are far greater than
the resources we currently have or that, frankly, we can realistically expect to secure in the short term,” says Bowman. “So, we’re under pressure from communities to do more and under the current fiscal environment our real capacity is shrinking so that puts pressure on us to be innovative and to find new ways to be more efficient and more effective — and we’re doing that.” Securing special funding through contracts with other organizations and other sources is something Bowman plans to continue to focus on. Though tuition rates have risen each year for a number of years, Bowman points out NIC’s tuition rates are still low compared to other institutions. “No one wants to see tuition rates increase,” he says. “The thing that people need to know is that a collage education in particular, and college tuition rates, it’s the best value anywhere in terms of the benefit.” Bowman notes another challenge for the college is a lack of space, especially at the Comox Valley campus. “Here, we are basically bursting at the seams. We don’t have enough space, and we’re utilizing portable classrooms,” explains Bowman. “One of our major capital priorities is to replace those portable classrooms with a new building — the teaching and learning centre building here on the Comox Valley campus is a big priority. “We’d like to see it happen within the next three years, which I think is a realistic time frame.”

between the two institutions. The agreement is effective initially for three years
and commits the institutions to explore collaboration and joint initiatives over the time period.
Flu clinics will open in the Alberni Valley starting next week at some pharmacies, and the week of Oct. 28 at public health clinics and doctors’ offices. Free flu shots will be provided to people at high risk of complications from influenza and their close contacts as well as other vulnerable groups. For those who don’t fall into the high-risk category, there might be a charge for the flu shot depending on where you go. “People who are at high-risk can suffer severe complications or even death from influenza,” said Dr. Dee Hoyano, Medical Health Officer for the Vancouver Island Health Authority. “The most common complication, particularly for elderly people, is pneumonia, an infection of the lungs. Influenza can also lead to other complications for people who have heart, lung or other health conditions.” Also new this year is the availability of a nasal spray influenza vaccine, free for eligible children aged two to 17 years. It is the preferred vaccine for children two to eight years of age because it provides better protection in young children than the inactivated influenza vaccine given by injection. A historical landmark in Port Alberni will be demolished in the next couple of months. Crews from H.L. Demolition have been painstakingly dismantling the historic dry shed at Somass Mill, which was once a focal point for lumber operations in the Alberni Valley. The shed, originally 75 feet wide and 700feet long, was built in 1941 over two rows of train tracks to allow dry loading of lumber directly into boxcars, according to local historian Frank Holm. Somass Mill was built in 1934 by Bloedel, Stewart and Welch. By 1957, the warehouse and craneway were extended to 1,200 feet long. There was a canopy on one side

that extended over the railroad tracks, allowing loading of boxcars under cover so the lumber didn’t get wet. “My dad worked as a boxcar loader,” said Jan Jansma, who worked at Somass for nearly 43 years. “It was the longest free-standing building in the Commonwealth. They could load six or eight boxcars at a time,” he said. “When they were

loading that finished stuff they had to wear special [calf hidesoled] slippers so they didn’t mark the lumber,” he recalled. The original part of the shed was demolished in 1989 as Somass Mill underwent a redesign and upgrade to an HVAC mill. Rail shipments of lumber and paper products ceased in the Alberni Valley in 1999, Holm said,

when Canadian Pacific Railway sold the trackage. Rail America quit operating the Alberni line for good in December 2001. The dry shed has been used for storage in the past, but not for
a couple of decades, said Makenzie Laine, spokesperson for Western Forest Products, which owns Somass Mill. Because of the building’s age, a firm specializing in
asbestos removal has been hired. “We are taking every measure to ensure we exceed the regulated safety requirements of WorkSafe BC,” Laine said. Demolition will take another month

ngoing heating and cooling system problems as well as landscaping issues at the new high has compelled School District 70 to withhold $2 million from the company that built
the facility. Project coordinator Jerry Linning confirmed that there have been issues with both of the HVAC systems but said it’s not out of the ordinary with a new building. “It’s a normal occurrence and not something that is unusual,” Linning said.
“I’m confident it will be remedied soon.” At the beginning of the school year classrooms reported that the air was too hot. The problem was rectified but now other classrooms are reporting that it’s too cold. According to Linning, the issue

‘It’s a normal occurrence for a project this size...’ – Jerry Linning is with the system’s air diffusers, which are located in each classroom. The diffusers condition and ventilate air and distribute air flow. New diffusers are being installed over the next few weeks as a solution to the issue Linning said. A firm called CEP is doing the work. The firm is not being paid any extra to do the work but is instead working to the terms of the contract, he said. CEP didn’t install the original system but officials are working closely with Yellowridge and other firms that were involved with designing and building the system, Linning said. The issue was discovered over the summer after the final city inspection. In August, with the issue unsuccessfully resolved the district opted to hold back $2 million from Yellowridge Construction and not sign off on an agreement that construction of the $60 million school was substantially complete. Yellowridge is the lead contractor which oversaw the building of the new high school, and in turn hired subcontractors including the one that installed the heating and cooling systems. The heating system isn’t the only problem. The school’s
landscaping is an issue as well and is part of the $2 million hold back. According to Linning, Yellowridge was responsible for the landscaping for two years. However, the News has learned that little to no landscaping was done. Much of the front of the school bordering Roger Street is overgrown with weeds. And the trees planted on the western slope are dead or dying. The issue disconcerted some students at the high school. When the students grew tired of looking at the overgrowth they sought to do something about it themselves. After 13 years as Nanaimo-Alberni Conservative MP, James Lunney has decided to call it a day. Lunney announced his decision to not seek re-election in 2015 during a press conference held at his constituency office in north Nanaimo, Friday morning. Lunney based his decision on one made by the B.C. Boundary Commission to split the Nanaimo-Alberni riding, based on population growth, prior to the next federal election. “It will take the 50,000 people from Lantzville—right next door to us here—north Nanaimo and append it to south Nanaimo and

Ladysmith and it’ll peel the north side of the riding and the west side and attach it to Courtenay,” Lunney said. He said the shift means it will force him to divert his attention away from a constituency base
he has served since he was first elected in 2000, so he is better off to complete his mandate for the remainder of his term by continuing to focus on the constituents currently within the Nanaimo-Alberni riding and leave the
door open for others to seek election in the reconfigured ridings. Lunney denied that he is stepping aside because of recent criticisms and controversies surrounding the Harper government and the Senate. “I’d have to say that we’ve waded through a lot,” Lunney said. “It’s a challenging time to govern in any capacity. People are restive. The world is unstable. The economy’s unstable and I think that makes people unsettled in a lot of different ways. “Of course, we’re all disappointed with what’s happened in the Senate and abuse of taxpayers’ money and, of course, changes have already been made, but that will work itself out.” Lunney has had
his differences with decisions made in Ottawa, especially over cutbacks of coast guard stations on the B.C. Coast, but his position was not a factor in his decision to not seek re-election. “I made that decision because I actually know more about the MCPS [Marine Communications and Traffic Services] situation than most of my colleagues in British Columbia,” he said.
“A lot of people on the Island don’t know how communications work with vessels offshore and so on, even some of my B.C. colleagues. “I made a position because I am concerned about the effectiveness of managing the entire coast from two centres.” He also said his decision to retire might free him to focus on issues that are of particular interest to him, such
as a cost effective and sustainable healthcare system. “So, you know, I will continue to carry the voice from this region to Ottawa and to the best of my ability to represent peoples’ interests and we will do our very best to be effective with the tools and skills that are available,” Lunney said. Lunney said he looks forward to spending a little more time enjoying the Island lifestyle.

A local animal care advocate has thrown up her arms after her petitions were stolen and after an unsatisfactory meeting with the mayor and local vets. “I’ve had it with the attitude in this town,” Mel Dunlop said. “If this is how people are going to be, then why even bother.” Dunlop went to the Animal Ark on Third Avenue on Oct. 10 to pick up a petition calling for support for after-hours veterinary care in the Alberni Valley. “They (Animal Ark) told me that a lady with dark hair already came in and took [the petition], saying ‘This has been dealt with already.’ I was stunned,” Dunlop said. She added that she didn’t know who the lady was. “Someone obviously didn’t like what it was I was trying to do,” she said. “I did my part for this only to have some twit walk away with them – I tried.” The News carried a story Oct. 3 about
Dunlop, whose daughter’s dog had to be euthanized after complications from spay surgery forced the family to drive the dog to Nanaimo for help. A follow-up appeared in the Oct. 10 issue. Dunlop reported her stolen petitions to the
RCMP. “But they told me that this was a moral issue and not a legal one,” she said. Dunlop was gathering the petitions to use that day at a meeting called by Port Alberni Mayor John Douglas between local veterinarians and Dunlop.

The city and Port Alberni Port Authority have renewed an accord that provides $95,000 for city coffers for the next five years. The accord also sets out terms of cooperation between the two bodies on one-off projects, current leases and agreements as well as for future initiatives. The $95,000 is to be directed to

The petition is part of a provincewide campaign to force a referendum on the issue. A former hereditary chief from the Ahousaht First Nation will be going to jail for sexually assaulting a woman. BC Provincial Court Judge P. McCarthy sentenced William George, 44, to 12 months in prison and 28 months probation. In addition, George is to seek sex offender counselling in prison. He’s also required to register as a sex offender for 20 years and to have no contact with the complainant. “There is historical rampant sexual abuse of females in West
Coast communities,” McCarthy said. “A message must be sent to the community that the court will protect young people from sexual predatory behaviour.” With that, the married father of three stood silently and was led through the prisoners entrance as some of his family members and supporters sobbed nearby. Sentences for sexual assault usually range from two to six years. The prosecution sought two years of jail time and two years probation. The offense occurred in 2012. George and several

When they opened the door they found him on top of the unconscious victim, her boyfriend passed out beside her. George was a hereditary chief at the time of the offense and has since been stripped of the title by community leaders. His father also apologized to the community on the family’s behalf. George has since stopped drinking, sought counselling and completed a stay at a treatment centre. He also immediately pleaded guilty to the offense, McCarthy noted. “The accused has done everything to try to make this right,” defense counsel James Wright said. A risk assessment report noted that George is at low risk to re-offend when he is sober but the risk increases when he’s consumed alcohol. The victim continues to struggle with trauma from the incident, the long term effects of which are unknown. A
n increase in the number of fare ripoffs has prompted a United Cabs driver to call for a bylaw requiring mandatory pre-payment of taxi fares in Port Alberni. Driver Paul Martin made the request in a letter to city councillors at their meeting on Oct. 15. According to Martin, drivers are often subject to fare rip-offs, which he defines as fares taking taxi rides then not paying for the trips. What few people realize though, Martin says, is that the amount ripped off comes out of the drivers pockets. “We are not paid an hourly rate but instead earn a percentage of the meter,” he said. “It’s really maddening and discouraging when we never know who is
the next person who is going to steal from us.” There is a process for drivers to deduct the unpaid fare. But drivers often settle for taking the loss, he said. Reporting the matter to police doesn’t produce anything but a report, Martin said. “I even had an officer say to me ‘We don’t have time to babysit taxi drivers’. The company, he said, keeps a list of known customers who owe fares. “And these are just the ones who have been reported,” he said. Martin proposes that city council pass a bylaw making prepayment of all taxi fares in Port Alberni mandatory. According to Martin, Victoria and Nanaimo are examples of two such communities that have passed similar bylaws. “I believe it’s time Port Alberni does the same,” he said.
There would be issues with the city passing such a bylaw, city planner Scott Smith said. Smith found no similar bylaw in Nanaimo, but he couldn’t confirm whether Victoria had one or not. The city also wouldn’t have the ability to enforce the bylaw, Smith said. As well, local government can only craft bylaws that provincial legislation enables them to. “I’m not sure if the province would allow the city to do that,” he said. Martin’s initiative with city council is independent from the company, said a United Cabs spokesperson. “We never discussed this at our last directors’ meeting. He’s doing it on his own and with the best intentions.” The spokesperson, who didn’t want to give his name, was standing in for regular
manager Aaron Franco, who is away and unavailable for comment. The spokesperson couldn’t say if there are more fare ripoffs now than in the past. “But it’s been a problem for as long as cabs have been around though,” he said. Taxi companies already have legislative recourse to guard against fare-jumpers, said Jan Broocke, who is the director of the Passenger Transportation Board, an independent tribunal that licenses taxis, limousines, shuttle vans and intercity buses in B.C. The city used more consultants in 2013 that it did in 2012, a report to city council noted. Specifically, the city retained the services of 45 consultants in 2013. According to city manager Ken Watson who wrote the report, the increase was due to the larger number of projects that the city was involved with this year. The report was produced at the behest of city council, who asked for a summary of consultants being used for projects undertaken in 2013. Companies hired by the city are classified as suppliers, contractors or consultants. Subcategories of those professions include appraisers, brokers,
engineers, notaries and surveyors. Of 250 businesses that were hired by the city, 35 are consultants. Thirteen of the 35 consultants were paid more than $25,000 each, which automatically lists them in the city’s statement of financial information, the report noted. Some consultants are hired on an on-going basis, while others are hired on a project-specific basis. The city undertook 18 specific projects in 2013 including the Bob Dailey Stadium track surface upgrade, the city building energy upgrade, Harbour Road Phase One, Plywood Site contamination study and water treatment upgrades, the report showed. Consultants had a hand in all of the initiatives in the city’s strategic plan.
In an interview with the News, Watson pointed out that consultants provide expertise that the city doesn’t have on staff, or when staff don’t have the time. “We don’t have a lawyer, BC land surveyor or specialized engineer on staff for instance,” Watson said. “We hire consultants when we require additional expertise over and above what we have on staff.” Watson cited the recent city bylaw review as an example of how consultants are hired for overcapacity situations. “The city planner and technician are capable of doing the work. Free speech for everyone ‘Social justice’ as student indoctrination Tom Fletcher’s column, BC Views, last week (Marijuana ‘reeferendum’ misguided, Oct. 10) elicited the highest number of responses online that we’ve seen in quite awhile. A few defended his position against the Sensible BC petition for a provincewide referendum on decriminalizing marijuana possession, but the majority of you were quite vocal in defending the petition and the man at the heart of it, Dana Larsen. (Take a look at our expanded Letters section on A11 for evidence.) Many of you questioned why we would run such a column. We wanted to point out that BC Views is a column; an opinion; not a news article. Mr. Fletcher chose a side and defended it, much as those of you who provided us with feedback did. Mr. Fletcher is a provincial columnist for Black Press, and his column runs in every Black Press-owned newspaper in B.C. He presents a side, and we welcome writers who would like to present the other side. Indeed, we included a response from Mr. Larsen in our Letters section this week. Editorials, columns, blogs—they are all written to engage readers and stimulate conversation. BC Views last week certainly achieved both goals.

ICTORIA – As the B.C. Teachers’ Federation executive moseys back to the bargaining table after a summer off, I’m reminded of former education minister George Abbott’s thoughts on his time trying to establish a civil discussion with the province’s most militant union. It started with a lecture. “In my first meeting with the BCTF, and I gather this is characteristic of all first meetings with education ministers, the TF advises that yes, they are a union, but first and foremost they are social activists and agents of social change,” Abbott recalled. Their buzzword is “social justice,” which is portrayed by leftists as superior to plain old justice, in ways that are seldom defined. So what exactly are the goals of this “social
change”? Here’s some of what I’ve gleaned. Parents may recall the 2008 introduction of an elective high school course called Social Justice 12. This was mainly the result of intense protest by a couple of gay activist teachers, and the ministry curriculum describes its emphasis on inclusion of racial, cultural and sexual differences. That’s all good, and it’s now bolstered by urgently needed antibullying and empathy efforts at all grades. Then there is the BCTF version. It’s not just a battle against “racism, homophobia and sexism” but also “poverty and globalization.” The BCTF has a quarterly “Social Justice Newsletter” filled with predictable economic assumptions. Readers of the latest issue are reminded at length that
the United Nations takes a dim view of Canada’s record on human rights, including a right to housing. Undefined “poverty” statistics are cited, although Statistics Canada has nothing but incomplete relative measures. One article describes a social justice club for Grade 2 and 3 students, with activities that include collecting food bank donations and “writing to the premier asking for a systemic plan to address child poverty.” Leaving aside whether eight-year-olds can understand what “systemic” means, this rhetoric is taken directly from the tired old NDP policy book. It rests on the cherished myth that poverty is imposed by right-wing governments that refuse to double the minimum wage and pile more taxes

on “the rich.” And what about that darned “globalization”? The BCTF still has a 2001 teaching guide on its website promoting the claim that Nike is uniquely guilty of making shoes and exercise gear in Third World sweatshops. Teachers are to instruct students how to organize a boycott of Nike, thus passing the received wisdom of campus radicalism to the next generation. This was all debunked years ago. Are Adidas, Reebok, Apple and Microsoft any different? Has nothing changed in 12 years? A quick web search will show this is a stale old tale with a convenient villain, to avoid complex questions. A BCTF official assures me this unit is being updated. Once that one is done, maybe they could check over their teaching unit on Enbridge’s Northern Gateway proposal, another labour of the union’s “social justice” truth team.

Entitled “What We Stand To Lose With Pipelines and Supertankers,” it boasts wildlife photos and “key sources” from the left (Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives) to the far-left fringe (Pipe Up Network). It is another protesters’ guide designed around a pre-determined viewpoint. BCTF bosses love to talk about the importance of “critical thinking.” These onesided caricatures of Nike, Enbridge and other familiar villains seem designed to produce the opposite. They remind me
of George Orwell’s classic novel 1984, where loyal party members are required to focus on selected enemies in a daily ritual called the Two Minutes Hate. Perhaps this is a clue to why our school system produces so many students lacking in employment skills and bursting with demands for government-imposed wealth redistribution. All I hear in Mr. Fletcher’s sad column is a personal dislike of Dana Larsen and his efforts. Mr. Fletcher says he has been a pot advocate for 20 years. So, could this be a personal dislike or jealousy of Dana? Our approval has been huge and motivating.

Re: Marijuana ‘reeferendum’ misguided, BC Views, Oct. 10. There is a big difference between condoning marijuana use and protecting children from drugs. Decriminalization as proposed by “Sensible B.C.” acknowledges the social reality of marijuana and spares users criminal records. That’s a step in the right direction. What’s really needed is a legally regulated market with age controls. Separating the hard and soft drug markets is critical. As long as organized crime controls marijuana distribution, consumers will come into contact with sellers of hard drugs like cocaine, meth and heroin. This “gateway” is a direct result of marijuana prohibition. Marijuana is less harmful than legal alcohol. The plant has never been shown to cause an overdose death. It makes no sense to waste tax dollars on failed marijuana policies that finance organized crime and facilitate the use of hard drugs. Taxing and

We are a grey haired, working class, taxpaying group of people who don’t appreciate being categorized into the stereotypical pothead image. We are all volunteers donating time and materials.

Pets are family members, our best friends and to some they are our children. We worry when they are ill and lose sleep to watch over them. The grief we feel when they die takes a piece of our heart. To hear that vets don’t answer the call, we don’t understand. We rely on our vets for special care to safeguard our pets throughout their lives. Why are they not there in emergency? My dogs have had wonderful care from Valley vets from birth to the end of life. For 40 years Dr. Ken Aylard was my vet, and he answered many emergency calls at night. Sadly, before Dr. Aylard, I
watched ill or injured neighbourhood pets disposed of by end of a .22 rifle. Thankfully, this is 2013. I say my prayers, but I have not needed a vet in an emergency situation in awhile. But I know that can change in an instant. I heard from a neighbour who made that trip over the hump to the Nanaimo pet ER. Because of that reason, he told me, this would be his last dog they would own in Port Alberni. Winter weather, the hump and a frantic pet owner with an injured animal —not a good combination. Accidents will happen. There are also people who don’t drive or don’t have a vehicle. Maybe a solution might be a pet paramedic ambulance service to evaluate the animal or rotating emergency on-call night among vets in the Valley. Not just for your own vet patients. Even if a pet cannot be saved and all vets can do is hold our hand while we cry. Let it be a familiar face that ends the suffering of our loved pet. It would be a comfort to us to have you at our side.

Time to adopt more sensible pot laws in BC To the Editor,
Re: Marijuana ‘reeferendum’ misguided, BC Views, Oct. 10. Mr. Fletcher’s recent column misrepresented the Sensible BC campaign, and could lead to confusion about our efforts for a marijuana referendum. The ultimate aim of Sensible BC is to have BC’s marijuana industry regulated in a similar manner to
wine. Our proposed legislation, the Sensible Policing Act, is designed to bring us closer to that goal. The Sensible Policing Act has four components, all carefully designed to be within provincial jurisdiction. The first aspect is to redirect police resources away from being wasted on simple possession of marijuana. If Sensible BC is
successful, then tens of thousands of hours of police and court time would immediately be freed up to pursue real criminals. This means safer communities for everyone, and less backlog in our courts. Second, our legislation treats a minor in possession of marijuana exactly the same as if it were alcohol. Third, the Sensible Policing Act calls
upon the federal government to repeal marijuana prohibition, so that BC can regulate and tax it in a manner similar to wine and beer. This would send a powerful message of change to Ottawa, and give our prime minister the mandate to legalize. Finally, our legislation would create a BC commission to figure out the rules
needed to implement legalization. Like alcohol and tobacco, most of the regulation for legal marijuana would be determined at the provincial level. British Columbia cannot fully legalize marijuana without a change to federal law, but we can take some sensible steps in the right direction. That is what Sensible BC is all about.

Alberni port hub proposal ‘no threat’ to Deltaport JEFF NAGEL BLACK PRESS
A
proposal by Port Alberni to act as a shipping hub for both Metro Vancouver and Seattle is being pitched as a way to get trucks off the road by sending containers up the Fraser River by barge. The concept is that a $1-billion, 300-acre container handling
terminal would be built along the mouth of Alberni Inlet, where containers would be offloaded, organized and then floated on barges to destinations in the Lower Mainland and Puget Sound. Big container ships that now sail past Alberni Inlet could stop, offload all their cargo and return to sea, cutting off three to four days of extra sailing normally
spent visiting other terminals, says Port Alberni Port Authority manager Zoran Knezevic. It seems from the time we begin our working lives, this carrot called retirement is waved in front of our noses. It’s that first day of the beginning of the rest of our lives. But what if we have pain that is in the way of fully enjoying our newfound freedom? Then what? A few years ago I was blessed to meet Donna, who at age 67 had severe headaches. From my viewpoint, a stressful work environment and Donna’s need to measure and control (like most nurses after 25 years of making impossible tasks seem routine and effortless) combined to cause her nervous system to blow a fuse. Like any good electrical system created to manage a certain level of demand, her nervous system shut itself off from a full level of function in order to save itself. The end result was interference in the proper nerve supply which through the dis-ease that followed, ended up creating the symptoms of a headache. The chiropractic solution was to find that blown fuse (misaligned vertebra – subluxation) and correct it. “Between the ages of 60 – 63, migraines were a daily event. They affected all parts of my life. It’s hard to function when all you want to do is hide in a dark room because of the pain. To do anything or go anywhere, you have to take along your security blanket – your pills.” Luckily for Donna, the involved vertebra was obvious and her nervous system and body resourceful enough to help the adjustment do its magic. “Life is now better. In the last year I’ve had approximately 12 migraines a month. Since beginning Chiropractic care 8 weeks ago, I’m at 2 migraines a month and they are much less intense.” Donna in my opinion is getting ready, albeit 2 years late, for freedom 65. Of course, some people are going to try and get around the rules. So this year, organizers added a “mallet of justice” to the mix. “We needed to have something to level the playing field. If you
cheat, you get it.” That means the pumpkin racer is smashed with the mallet. CITY OF PORT ALBERNI PUBLIC NOTICE Uptown Revitalization Tax Exemption Program At a regular meeting on September 23rd, 2013, Council for the City of Port Alberni provided three readings to “City of Port Alberni Revitalization Tax Exemption Program, Bylaw No. 4824”. This Bylaw is intended to encourage investment in the uptown area by encouraging property owners to create new commercial space, new multi-family residential space, improve existing commercial buildings and multi-family residential buildings, thereby revitalizing and increasing the esthetic appeal of the uptown.

Brendin Breuker, front, and Darcy Haggard recently came back from Knoxville Tennessee where they played Call of Duty against 23 other teams and came in 6th. They didn’t win the big money but were the only Canadians to attend this event and placing in the top ten a great feat. Their team mates were one guy from California and one from Chicago, that they had met on line.
The Rainforest Quilters and a Saturday group of quilters got together and made 20 quilts for the Women’s Transition House and delivered them on Thursday October 10. These ladies are no strangers to donating as they donated 57 quilts to the tsunami survivors in Japan. They are sending their warm hugs around the world.
Carolyn Thibodeau, Grade 4 and 5 teacher at Haa-Huu-Payak and also the organizer of the Terry Fox Run this year, congratulates top fund raiser Mary Robinson, 6, who raised over $400. Haa-Huu-Payak School had their biggest year with over $1,250 raised for the Terry Fox Foundation. Adrianna Watts raised $170, Jayla and Kenyan Sabbas $180 and Howie Little $240. Hard work, dedication and two-way talent has garnered a local basketball player the attention of an American college scout. Josh DeJong, 17, is a Grade 12 guard with the Alberni Armada senior boys basketball team. While some high school students were sleeping in over the summer months DeJong was at the Jericho Road Church gym working his conditioning, improving his shooting, and lifting weights. The hard work paid off for the two-way guard who was named defensive player of the year. He received a visit in August from Jesse Brown, head coach of the Tacoma Community College Titans men’s basketball team. “He has a good work ethic, was putting up shots and he knows how to guard a player,” Brown said in a telephone interview. “He also comes from a good family and that speaks to high integrity, something that colleges look for in a player.” Brown found out about DeJong through a mutual friend of Harold Lefty Williams, the Armada junior boys’ coach and made the trip to Port

Alberni. The Titans play in the nine-team Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges western division. They were 16-0 in league play and won their sixth regional title in eight years. Brown liked what he saw, he said. But if DeJong hopes to earn a second look at recruiting time he has to get stronger and work on his ball handling. “He wants to be a point-guard so he’s going to have to become more vocal.”
DeJong will have his work cut out for him. The Titans had their first workouts of the season this week and the team includes 15 freshman players. “It’s a tough place to play. But if he puts in work it’s not far-fetched that he could end up here,” Brown said. DeJong first played basketball under the watchful eye of his father, a former standout with ADSS in 1986. The younger DeJong stood out from other players, dad said.

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs have acquired another goaltender in a trade with Merritt Centennials. Connor LaCouvee, originally from Qualicum Beach, comes to the Bulldogs after compiling a 4-0 record and .918 save percentage in four games with the Cents. “Our relationship goes back few years when (LaCouvee) was here in camp,” Bulldogs’ head coach Kevin Willison said. “We see potential in him. He’s big, he’s athletic, he’s a focused young man and he knows what he wants.” LaCouvee attended training camp with the Bulldogs in 2011-12, but was snatched up by Cowichan Valley Capitals when the Bulldogs hesitated to commit to him. LaCouvee is the Bulldogs’ fourth goaltender: Blake Pearson also donned the Bulldog uni for a few games. LaCouvee is well-travelled: he was traded by the Cowichan Valley Capitals in June to the Nanaimo Clippers when Caps’ coach Bob Beatty said last June he would probably get more playing time. “We felt as a 19-yearold, if he wasn’t going to be the starting goaltender, it wouldn’t have been fair,” Beatty told the Cowichan News Leader. LaCouvee played 20 games for the Caps last season and finished with a 3.61 goals-against average and .904 save percentage.

He moved to Canada in 1952 and went on to become a Radiologist and was the Chief Radiologist at the Westcoast General Hospital in Port Alberni for many years. He also practiced in Comox, Parksville, Cumberland and Campbell River. Dad was a passionate animal lover for the 92 years he was alive. ach year the members of Euclid Lodge # 158 in Port Alberni invite their neighbours, friends and relatives to their annual fundraising loonie/toonie night. It was decided by lodge members that each year they would take a portion of the funds raised and return them back into the local area. This year their choice was to help the Alberni Valley

Bro. Sandy McRuer attended the “Read and Feed Program” at Alberni Valley Elementary School. There, they and were put to work at 7:45 a.m. by the volunteers: cooking toast, pouring juice, cutting cheese and cucumbers and preparing the tables and chairs. At 8:15 a.m. the children attending the program started to arrive and by 8:45 a.m., 62 children had
enjoyed a breakfast and books being read to them. Prior to the bell ringing for classes, Euclid Lodge members presented a cheque in the amount of $500 to help the “Read and Feed” program continue their daily breakfast initiative. Amongst all of this was RW Bro. Bill Allen Past DDGM District No. 5, who volunteers with the “Read and feed “ program.

“He was keen, he worked hard and he picked up the game easily.” DeJong stuck with the game through AW Neill Middle School and played house soccer as well. He took a year off basketball in Grade 9, but he stayed involved in the game by helping coach at middle school. “I missed it, I really missed it. But I had to take that year off,” he said. DeJong took up the game again in Grade 10, working extra hard on getting up to speed with the rest of the
team who were a year ahead of him in skill development. His hard work was rewarded at the end of the season when the team presented him with best defensive player of the year accolades. DeJong played again in Grade 11, and he attracted the attention of Williams, a former Globetrotter and standout college player. Williams, who, grew up in the basketball hotbed of the US. saw in DeJong a player with talent he hadn’t yet tapped. “Athletes can recognize other
athletes and I could see potential in him but he needed some fine tuning,” said Williams, a former college defensive player of the year. With that, DeJong worked all summer on his shooting, conditioning and weight lifting. And he continued to hone his defensive game. “I was always taught that defense wins games so that’s what I worked hard on,” he said. The Storm sent LaCouvee to Merritt Centennials less than two weeks later, again for future considerations. “He’s put on a few miles in the last little bit,” Willison said Wednesday prior to the Bulldogs’ game against Cowichan. “He practiced with us this morning and he’s pretty excited.” LaCouvee was due to start Wednesday’s game. The Bulldogs also this week acquired defenceman Brodie Clowes and future considerations from the Whitecourt Wolverines of the AJHL in exchange for Luke Fenske. They also released forward Dean Allison. Clowes was originally a fifth-round draft pick in 2010 by the Chilliwack Bruins of the Western Hockey League. He broke into junior hockey with the Olds Grizzlys (AJHL) in 2011-12. Music heals with Island band When the Lion the Bear the Fox performs in Port Alberni this Thursday, Oct. 17, music fans will get a chance to hear new songs from the band’s just-released EP and help bridge the gap for music therapy patients on Vancouver Island. This fall, the Vancouver- and Ladysmith-based trio, Christopher Arruda
and Cory Woodward of Vancouver and Ryan McMahon of Ladysmith, has partnered with Music Heals to raise money to bring Bandwagon, a mobile recording studio used by music therapists, to Vancouver Island. Each show along the Lion the Bear the Fox’s We’d Be Good Men EP release tour this month will benefit
that campaign.
