A toast to public speaking Toastmasters’ president exemplifies group’s success WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON

hirley Maxwell remembers being ‘quiet as a mouse’ when she first walked into a Somass Toastmasters meeting. Thirty years later she is president of that very club. Toastmasters International in Port Alberni is celebrating its 60 anniversary on Oct. 26. An event is being held at the Steelworkers Hall on Montrose Street to mark the occasion. Maxwell has been around for 30 of those 60 years and has seen a lot, she said. She’s come a long way since first arriving in Franklin River from Vancouver when she was 10 years old. On the Lower Mainland, Maxwell went to the theatre once a week with her grandfather and frequented the old museum, which is now the Carnegie Community Centre. “There were paved streets in Vancouver but the streets were two wooden planks in the camp, that’s one thing I remember,” Maxwell said. “And the Uchuck brought groceries to us once a week from Port Alberni if we got our order in on time.” Her parents later sent her to Queen Margaret’s Private School For Girls in Duncan where she enjoyed math and dreamed of one day being a doctor. “I didn’t have any favourite teachers though. They all wore capes and gowns. I had to wear a dress, which was different because in Franklin we wore jeans and shirts,” Maxwell said. You could take the girl out of Franklin River but not the Franklin River out of the girl, and she returned there after graduating. Soon after, she met her husband Robert, who worked as a speeder driver and later a heavy duty mechanic. The couple married in 1956 and moved to Port Alberni where they had two daughters and one son. She took a job in accounting at Parks and Recreation, where she worked for 27 years. Maxwell noticed that women who worked for the city had no voice in the local CUPE union, despite being members. “I knew then that I wanted to be president but I didn’t know where to start,” she said.

‘Toastmasters has been such an educational part of my life and it’s been a terrific learning experience.’

All Shirley Maxwell wanted from Toastmasters was to learn to speak more confidently in public. She has translated that desire into a 30--year relationship with the organization in the Alberni Valley.

Maxwell knew about Toastmasters but was too afraid to join. Instead, she took a public speaking course, which unbeknownst to her was run by Toastmasters. She became more comfortable with speaking publicly each week. Maxwell stayed with Toastmasters, and seven years later became the first female president of CUPE Local 118. “I think people around city hall at that time thought that this was going to be... interesting,” she said. During Maxwell’s time she saw strong female figures such as former mayor Gillian Trumper, Freeman of the City Donna Brett and human resources manager Theresa Kingston arrive. Maxwell has achieved the Distinguished Toastmaster and District Governor titles, some of the highest organizational designations that can be achieved. She credits Toastmasters with realizing

personal and professional goals even after her retirement in 2001. “Toastmasters has been such an educational part of my life and it’s been a terrific learning experience.” Maxwell has also watched Toastmasters evolve in the past 30 years. New manuals have been developed for workshops. With the digital age there is now a virtual Toastmasters club that meets once per month via the Internet. “And I see more women come out now. They’ve really come into their own in the business world,” she said. There used to be two Toastmasters clubs in town but now there is only one, Maxwell said. One Port Alberni veterinary clinic offers on-call veterinary care outside of office hours. But owner/ veterinarian Alana Symington says Manzini Animal Hospital still refers cases requiring complex care to Nanaimo. Symington has worked at Manzini Animal Hospital for the last five years, the last three of which she has owned and operated it. Symington and other local veterinarians met three years ago and decided to refer animals requiring after-hours care to the Central Island Emergency Veterinary Hospital in Nanaimo.

Manzini opted to continue offering after-hours care for their own clients on an on-call basis despite the decision, Symington said. “My colleague and I offer on-call care one night per week each and one weekend per month,” she said. “It’s important to still offer the service and to give people this option,” she said. During regular hours Manzini offers services such as surgery, medical, laser, blood work and ultrasound. Although the facility offers on-call care it is within a limited context, said Symington, who just worked such a shift the previous evening. The service is aimed mostly at facility clients whose pets are suffering from complications from a medical procedure that day. On-call service is not offered on a specific day but rather on a flexible basis, she said.

In those instances, the owners will still be referred to Nanaimo. “They have a facility, equipment and staff available 24 hours; that’s their mandate,” Symington said. “We can’t do it all. ew renovations at Fir Park Village make the facility brighter and more welcoming, facility manager Barb Stevenson said. The bulk of the reno was completed in August but the finishing touches were just completed. “The facility looks brighter and more welcoming now and the residents just love it,” she said. “The lighting levels used to

be too low for people with poor eyesight.” The renovations started in December 2012 and took just under one year to complete. The work was completed in two phases. The first phase involved the wings of the building and involved redoing the floors, ceiling, walls doors, and lighting. The second phase involved reconfiguring the common area by moving the store and offices, making the dining area smaller and replacing the

linoleum flooring. “Functionally, the entrance is very secure. There is more room for residents and wider access ways,” Stevenson said. Workers unearthed some surprises while doing the work. A tangled mass of wiring was found when the ceiling was uncovered and had to be thinned out. And damp concrete was found when the flooring was removed, meaning it had to be specially sealed. “The building is 30 years old and nothing

was touched so we wondered if we’d find something,” Stevenson said. The renovations were underwritten with $1 million from the Vancouver Island Health Authority, $92,000 from Legion Branch No. 293, and $50,000 from Fir Park’s foundation. Safety, cost effectiveness and consistency are behind an AlberniClayoquot Regional District decision to purchase tsunami warning equipment from the city. ACRD directors were set to discuss a proposal to make the purchase at a directors meeting on Oct. 9, after the News went to press. If purchased, the equipment will be installed at the China Creek Marina and Campground. China Creek is heavily populated seasonally and there is a need for a system. ‘Bully’ dictates work behaviour Marijuana ‘reeferendum’ misguided Attention employers, you have less than a month to establish policies around bullying and harassment, or face the wrath of WorkSafe B.C. If you noticed the irony in that statement, good, because it’s so ironic that one of the biggest bullies in the province is going to dictate anti-bullying policy to the rest of us. On Oct. 1 WorkSafe announced policy changes on bullying and harassment. It defines bullying and harassment as any action which: a. includes any inappropriate conduct or comment by a person towards a worker that the person knew or reasonably ought to have known would cause that worker to be humiliated or intimidated, but b. excludes any reasonable action taken by an employer or supervisor relating to the management and direction of workers or the place of employment. Most of us understand that WorkSafe is trying to educate the working public that bullying and harassment are unacceptable. Most of us take that as a given and work in an environment where people behave with courtesy and professionalism towards others. Others aren’t so fortunate. WorkSafe does not plan an “enforcement blitz.” Rather, the provincial body will respond to complaints and will rely on inspectors to ferret out workplace bullies. The other difficulty we have in WorkSafe overseeing this is its own track record. We’ve read far too many stories about injured workers who feel “bullied” by WorkSafe in regard to how they’re treated by case workers. We would rather have WorkSafe inspectors looking for unsafe practices that can result in real physical harm to employees. That’s what they do best. – Campbell River Mirror

ICTORIA – I won’t be signing the “Sensible B.C.” petition to demand a provincewide referendum on marijuana enforcement. You shouldn’t either, and here are a few reasons why. Let me start by saying I’ve been calling for legalization and regulation of pot for 20 years, to conserve police resources and reduce violent crime. Our war on drugs is a failure even for heroin and cocaine, and marijuana is obviously much easier to produce. But the current effort led by Dana Larsen, B.C.’s clown prince of pot, is not only misguided, it’s dangerous. The petition does not propose legalization. It seeks to impose a provincial law that would stop B.C. police from using any resources for simple possession charges.

This would create a loophole in the federal drug law. So what would that do? It would protect otherwise innocent customers of the current illegal marijuana trade, while leaving the criminal distribution business in place. For a closer look at that, I recommend reports from the Surrey Six murder trial now underway, or the upcoming case against three accused assassins of Red Scorpion gangster Jonathan Bacon in Kelowna. Larsen’s loony law would tie police hands when they are trying to hold someone on a lesser charge while they search for evidence of something nastier. This is a source of many simple possession charges today. Police chiefs have a different idea, asking for the option of treating simple possession as a

ticket offence to keep the court time to a minimum. Both of these notions have the same obvious flaws. They don’t deal with sales to minors and they divert no revenue to government, leaving most of that in the hands of criminal dealers who buy cocaine, guns and fancy cars. Colorado and Washington have gone the legalization route, so far without interference from their federal government. These states need money, and they don’t need more crime or ill-considered hippy gesture politics. Meanwhile in Ottawa, Health Canada is trying to convert a poorly regulated mess of smallscale medical marijuana licences to a free-market system of commercial producers. Local politicians tore a strip off Health Canada

Dave Hensman predicted that when a grower gets a letter cancelling his licence, he’s more likely to roll up a big joint with it than to shut down. Burnaby Coun. Nick Volkow suggested the response would echo an old Cheech and Chong routine: “Dave’s not here, man.” Here’s another reason not to support Larsen: the conduct of his organizers. One fellow set up a petition table at, of all places, the Terry Fox Hometown Run in Port Coquitlam. After scrawling “pot cures cancer” on the table, he proceeded to interrupt speeches by cancer survivors and the run itself by yelling the same false slogan. You can imagine how people with terminal cancer and their loved ones would react.

Some would know that marijuana may alleviate side effects of chemotherapy, just as it can ease suffering for some multiple sclerosis patients. But the suggestion of a cure is as cruel as it is moronic. Larsen’s “cannibus” has been rolling around B.C., reaping uncritical media coverage. It even blundered into the recent Walk for Reconciliation in

Vancouver, an event to mark the end of federal hearings into the effects of residential schools on aboriginal children. I wouldn’t support the Larsen bunch for anything, unless it involved them looking for jobs. Just say no. Port Alberni Mayor John Douglas seems mainly to rely on hope and cosy chats with cabinet ministers for economic development. He shows no understanding of economics, infrastructure, or transportation, a new highway and a container terminal being cases in point. He thinks that 750,000 Vancouver Island residents would be well served by a container port down the Alberni Inlet, not realizing that many goods destined for the Island have to go first to warehouses in Vancouver and elsewhere. They then can be shipped back to Nanaimo, which is now developing a new container facility. Although it’s been stated that barge traffic to and from Vancouver from down the Alberni Inlet would be adversely affected by bad weather just two or three times a year, myself and others think that this is an optimistic view. Towed barges move a lot slower than ships. And what Island products would be

shipped from here by containers? Certainly not our major export, raw logs, nor much lumber, nor any coal. Lastly, to my knowledge, Port Metro Vancouver can handle increased container traffic for several more years yet. As for a new highway, it’s not a realistic project for the foreseeable future. In sum, the continuous spate of propaganda about speculative projects from the mayor seems more to do with his re-election campaign than with actual economic development. It does this community a disservice because it creates false hope in an economically depressed area which has lost about 6,000 high-paying jobs in the forest industry alone, for example, about 1,200 each at the Somass and Catalyst mills.

Re: “Science loses ground to superstition,” (B.C. Views, Oct. 3.) Tom Fletcher’s column hit on a subject that has bothered me for some time. Maybe it is the media’s preoccupation with eyeballs but it seems to me that we are getting a lot of media output that gives faux reality the same weighting as scientifically tested data. We, the public, are still untrained in appreciating the truth ‘free-for-all’ that the digital world has dumped on us and our educational system is not yet set up to notch up student’s

BS meters. Thus we get public support for almost any ‘conspiracy theory’ or economic myth, whether scientific or social. Here on Vancouver Island, this means we see the repeated return of the ‘zombie’ E&N passenger rail solution to the ‘Colwood Crawl’ traffic congestion; the global warming ‘Chicken Little’ performance; the never-ending suggestion that more health care spending will solve our health care issues; that everyone needs a university degree regardless of what it is; that science is usually wrong in the long run; that money obtained from another level of government is free; that we are entitled to anything/ everything we can think of; that ‘they’ are the cause of all my problems; that we do not need to create wealth - the rest of the world will always send us whatever we need; that we do not really need oil to maintain our current life style; etc. Fletcher has a deserved reputation for ‘telling it how it is’. Keep it up.

Titled ‘Age Friendly Alberni Survey’, the 12-page document asks residents questions about subjects such as transportation, housing, community support and health services. “We want to rate our community on how age-friendly it is,” project coordinator Barb Stevenson said. According to the Alberni Valley Community profile, which can be found in the city’s website, there are approximately 3,000 people age 65 and above living in Port Alberni. The $20,000 survey was funded by a grant the city received from the Union of BC Municipalities. The document was then developed by the ACCS through focus groups with citizens and service agencies. The survey is for everyone to fill out. It can be found and filled out online linked to the city’s website home page. Or, a hard copy can be filled out at Parks and Recreation administration office on Wallace Street or at city hall, Stevenson said. The deadline to fill out the survey is Nov. 8 and results will be released at a public meeting in January 2014. People of different ages will answer the survey, Stevenson said. “Older people might say that the city’s bus system is a priority for them, while a single parent might say education and social opportunities are their priority,” she said.

NIC’s in safe hands Alberni Community and Women’s Resource Society in partnership with North Island College, has teamed up with the RCMP to complete a safety and security audit of the Roger Street campus. The Audit Team used concepts from an innovative approach called CPTED (Crime Prevention Through

Environmental Design). The RCMP contracted Greg Perkins of Liahona Security Consortium to implement this approach. “CPTED is about understanding the direct relationship between the physical environment and crime,” said RCMP Cpl. Jen Allan. “The audit emphasizes the

productive use of space in deterring crime and promoting a safer environment for staff, students and visitors at NIC.” The Safety Audit is one of the actions of the In Safe Hands Project. Copies of the audit will be available at the launch on Thursday, Oct. 24 from 2–3 p.m. in the NIC cafeteria.

our disability management professionals from Malaysia spent a full week at the Pacific Coast University for Workplace Health Sciences (PCUWHS) campus in Port Alberni last month, where they underwent advanced instructor training through the National Institute of Disability Management and Research. The four students are with PERKESO, the Malaysian Social Security Organization. The South Asian country, which has a population of just over 28 million people, has adopted the NIDMAR education and certification curriculum with a goal to certify instructors to deliver the courses in their home regions, to further professionalize the PERKESO workforce. “We’re concentrating on five key modules, and we will be following up online,” NIDMAR instructor Dr. Donal McAnaney said. “Now that we know each other’s faces, it will be a lot easier.” As a former British colony, Malaysia has retained English as a working language, which has made face-

to-face instruction possible. McAnaney added that, due to differences in policies and practices in different jurisdictions worldwide, the new instructors have a mandate to adapt the modules to fit Malaysian laws and regulations.

am now officially 10 months cancer free. The Nanaimo Cancer Doctor said that my PSA is so low that it was undetectable, ergo my next cancer check-up appointment is in April. Whoop-eeee. We recently had some friends from Calgary staying with us here in Port Alberni for a week. Of course that was the week that we had almost constant daily showers along with a high windstorm on Sunday night. That Sunday night everyone in the house voted to go down to Harbour Quay to see the white water and experience a Port Alberni storm. We went for a walk to the end of the breakwater pier. After the pier experience, the women wandered off talking tête-a-tête, past the Starboard Grill Restaurant and onto the waterside path that leads past the children’s slides towards the Port Authority. A waitress came running out of the restaurant to let me know that a small bear was spotted wandering in the area. I called out to the women to come back immediately. We then drove the area along with a couple of other vehicles that were bear spotting, alas to no avail. I am stilling driving the V V (Vespa) around town taking photographs in public and not so public spots. One of those spots was Canal Beach, the new public beach to check on the progress or lack of progress. I don’t know why it is taking so long to create a beach, I never see anyone working, just piles of earth. Another famous spot is the boat marina near Harbour Quay, for the large and small fishing boats, the pleasure crafts, the hustle and bustle of fish on ice being unloaded.

(FYI, the sun was high and in the lens.) At Canal Beach on a sunny sidelit September day, I shot RAW, with an ISO of 400, using my 20mm lens set with an aperture of f13 and a shutter speed of 1/250th of a second. This produced a 20.4 MB file. The mini-seminar on “Computers and Security – What you need to know” at the local library was a success with 17 people attending. I presented a Power Point Presentation, talked, answered questions and threw the door prizes at the winners. The handout sheets were either picked up at the library the next day or else I e-mailed them directly to participants. There will be another free mini seminar (one hour) at the library on Dec. 3 called “ How to buy a Digital Camera – What you need to know”. The first annual Senior Men’s Golf tournament was held recently at the Alberni Golf Club. By all reports it was a huge success, with 87 golfers teeing it up on Saturday for the noon shotgun start. Saturday proved to be an excellent day for golf: mostly sunny skies with a few clouds rolling around. Sunday was a different story. It was raining for the 8:30 a.m. shotgun start and by the time they played four or five holes it was coming down in buckets. The Alberni Valley Bulldogs are taking on the Cowichan Valley Capitals and Victoria Grizzlies this weekend. The Bulldogs are 1-8-3 going into Cowichan on Friday. Matches with the Caps are always a rivalry, Bulldogs head coach Kevin Willison said. Cowichan will be getting their first look at Bulldog netminder Tyger Howat, who played 174 minutes and backstopped two ties and a loss last weekend against Trail, Penticton and Langley. “He’s really held the fort for us,” Willison said. New Bulldog forward Craig Martin will also get a crack against the Capitals. Martin chipped in a goal in each of the games last weekend. But winning will have to be a team effort, Willison said. “Everyone needs

Thunder roars to perfect 5–0 hoops record The Port Alberni Ladies Basketball League saw two exciting games Tuesday night with Dave Ralla’s Blue Thunder taking on Mace Electric’s Green Shockers and Mace Electric’s Red Phoenixes taking on Dave Ralla’s Yellow

Lightning. In the first game, the undefeated Thunder took a small lead in the first half and were up 34-30 at the half. The Shockers played hard, but were not able to make up their point deficit, and they eventually lost 58-51. The Thunder keep

their perfect record going at 5-0. Julia Hudson had 25 points for the Shockers. The second game pitted the two teams tied for second—the Phoenixes and the Lightning—against each other. This was a tight game with the leading score

alternating between the two teams many times. The Lightning however were able to eke out a 60-56 win. Jane Owen led the Lightning with 19 points. Janine Thompson had 22 points for the Phoenixes.

Leonard Louis â€œLenâ€? Rinvold September 24, 1933 - September 26, 2013 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Leonard Louis â€œLenâ€? Rinvold, 80, on Thursday, September 26, 2013 in Vernon, B.C. Len was born in Coronach, Saskatchewan on September 24, 1933 to the late Lars and Anne Rinvold both who immigrated to Canada from Norway. On June 27, 1953 Len married Joy Vera â€œElsieâ€? Hamilton in Port Alberni, B.C. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this summer. Len achieved success and respect in his lifelong employment in the forest industry and after retirement from Riverside Forest Products, Lavington, B.C. he established his own company to continue to utilize his knowledge and skill in the industry. Lenâ€™s other passions were working on his vintage Land Rover, rebuilding motorcycles, repairing clocks and watches, mountain lake and ocean fishing and being from a musically gifted family, he continued to enjoy singing and playing his guitar to the end of his life. In Lenâ€™s own words, â€œNot bad for an old cowboyâ€?! Len is survived by his beloved wife â€œElsieâ€? and their four children: Cheryl (Richard) Tessier; Debbie Rinvold; and Len (Melissa) Rinvold all of Vernon, B.C. and Kim (Tom) Fellhauer of Kelowna, B.C. He is also survived by his 11 grand-children as well as 11 great-grandchildren and one expected in March 2014. Len was predeceased by his older brothers Gerhard (Gerry), and Lester and his sister Helen. Len was a very kind-hearted and loving husband, father and â€œPapaâ€?, he will always be much loved and greatly missed. A Memorial service will be held at 2:00 on October 19, 2013 at the Pleasant Valley Funeral Home in Vernon, B.C. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Alzheimer Society of British Columbia.

Harpdog Brown lives and breathes the blues. The harmonica player and blues singer with the sultry, whiskey-soaked voice returns to the Rainbow Room this Thursday, Oct. 10 and he’s bringing his new Victoria-based band, Haro Strait Blues Band with him. Band members John Hunter (drummer), George Fenn (bass) and Jeordie Edmonds (guitar) share Harpdog’s passion for the blues. Tickets are $15 and available at Rainbow Lanes or 250-730-1967. Art workshops rescheduled Art workshops with artist Cynthia Bonesky have been re-scheduled for Saturday Dec. 14 -15, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mixed Media Techniques for art journaling, card making, scrapbooking and fine art will be taught. The cost is $50 and a complete supply list is available at Rollin Art Centre.

Poirier and Jarvis classes Join artists Kelly Poirier and Dorothy Jarvis at Rollin Arts Centre, where they will host two children’s art workshops. “Sense”sational is a sex-session class that starts on Saturday, Oct. 26. Children ages 5-9 will explore painting, mask making and sculpting. Classes are from 10 a.m. to noon, every Saturday. “Georgia and the Garden” is our second art class, and is for 7-12 year olds. Children learn about colour, value, shading and other art fundamentals. This class is being offered every Monday afterschool from 3:15-4:30 p.m. for six weeks. The class starts Oct. 28 and runs until Dec. 9. The cost for both classes is $80 each and covers material and supplies.

The Community Arts Council will be holding a fall concert benefit for Rollin Art Centre at the Capitol Theatre. The Travelers are appearing on Sunday, Nov. 10 from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. Tickets on sale at Rollin Art Centre, advance tickets: $10 or $12 at the door.
