Metro Vancouver’s plan to block waste from leaving the region was approved by its zero waste committee on Thursday, leaving the controversial plan – which critics believe is being used to justify a new garbage incinerator – a step closer to becoming reality. The plan was previously approved without debate by Metro Vancouver on Sept. 27. Coun. Patricia Ross said she was surprised the initiative went through without an uproar. “It’s so controversial and it’s had so much opposition… I thought there would be some discussion, and there was not a whisper of debate.” The proposal would require all garbage to go to regional facilities, blocking shipments to Abbotsford’s private transfer stations where tipping fees are lower and Metro bans on dumping recyclables don’t apply. Representatives from the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) have repeatedly spoken against the initiative and the proposal for an estimated $500-million incinerator that could potentially be located in the Lower Mainland, creating the potential of toxic pollutants being blown up the Valley. Slide forces water system closure Norrish Creek out of service but wells still working A slide last Wednesday near Norrish Creek has forced the shutdown of Abbotsford’s and Mission’s main water supply. The slide, covering approximately 300 metres, dropped debris and rock, crossing and blocking the Forest Service Road to Norrish Creek. It also caused a breach in the Norrish water supply pipe that runs alongside the road, and city crews decided to shut down the water system. City manager George Murray said no impact is anticipated to water service for residents of Abbotsford and Mission, because the supply from Cannell Lake and the wells systems can address demand at this time of year. According to city staff, Cannell Lake and the well system are capable of moving about 90 to 100 million litres a day (MLD) of water, but could support a higher peak level for a few days. This year’s peak use was 103 MLD in July, and October is currently averaging a usage of about 65 MLD, with peak days not reaching much higher than that. The city says the site remains unstable with the potential for

A slide on Wednesday evening forced officials to close the Norrish Creek water supply. It could take up to six weeks to repair. another slide, and crews are working to ensure the site is safe through rock scaling and blasting to bring down loose rock. This must be done before crews can begin the cleanup, fix the road and repair the pipe. The city is working with the ministries of the environment and forestry, Emergency Management BC and geotechnical consultants to address the problems. Preliminary estimates are that it will be at least four weeks before the supply
will be restored to full operation. The Forest Service Road remains closed to all foot and vehicle traffic until further notice. Murray said a contracted security guard who was stationed at the Norrish Creek Treatment Plant had attempted to hike across the debris field at some point after the slide and became stranded. Mission Search and Rescue were dispatched on Thursday, and the guard was transported to hospital.
Homeless project meeting set Public can ask questions, raise concerns about ACS proposal Alex BUTLER Abbotsford News
A proposed facility to house 20 homeless men in downtown Abbotsford will be open for discussion at a public meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 9 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Salvation Army Cascade Community Church (35190 DeLair Rd.). The event will give the public an opportunity to learn about the project, ask questions, voice concerns and address a panel of representatives. The project, which would be built in partnership with Abbotsford Community Services (ACS) and BC Housing, created controversy when the plans were announced in June. The low-barrier facility – located at 2408 Montvue Ave. across from the ACS location – would not require that the men be drug- or alcohol-free when entering. The facility would be based on a “housing first� model – a concept that having a roof over someone’s head is the first step before addressing issues of substance abuse or mental health. But the proposal raised concern for the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association (ADBA), as the proposed site is located within a special downtown zone (C7), which prohibits supportive recovery homes. The city, ADBA, ACS and BC Housing have been exploring alternatives since the proposal was announced. A potential solution would be to locate the facility outside of the C7 zone. The idea was recently endorsed by the Abbotsford

Chamber of Commerce, which stated that while they support a housing-first approach to addressing homelessness, it should not be within the C7 zone. It’s an idea that ACS is willing to consider, but it creates potential issues for the project. Rod Santiago, executive director of ACS, said the site was chosen because ACS owns the land, which is close to their services. A different location could mean purchasing new land and an increase in operational fees. Santiago said that as BC Housing will not provide additional funds, and ACS does not have the resources, the money would have to come from other partners. Mayor Bruce Banman said he SANTIAGO is pleased all parties are discussing alternatives, but acknowledged there is limited time to come to a decision. He said he’s hopeful another location can be found, but at this point, is unable to say how the additional costs would be covered. He added that there is a possibility of swapping plots of land, or relying on generous donations to cover the additional costs. The decision as to whether to allow the project to be built ultimately lies with city council, and hesitation could mean BC Housing decides to redirect the $2.4 million in capital funding, plus $215,000 in annual operating costs, to build a facility in another community.

A 47-year-old Abbotsford man died Saturday night after he lost control of his bicycle and collided with a light pole. The incident took place at about 5 p.m. on Blueridge Drive near the crossing for Discovery Trail, located west of Clearbrook Road. Const. Ian MacDonald said the man was travelling east, down a steep hill, when he lost control of his bike and veered into a curb on his right. The cyclist was then thrown from his bike, and his head hit a light pole. The man was not wearing a helmet, MacDonald said. An ambulance transported the man to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Net Zero facility uses latest technology to divert organic material Alex BUTLER Abbotsford News
Abbotsford will divert an estimated 11,000 tonnes of organic waste this year – and it will end up at Net Zero Waste to be turned into high-quality soil. Politicians and community members gathered at the Net Zero Waste compost facility at its official grand opening on Wednesday, Oct. 2. The operation opened in January with the implementation of the city’s curbside compost program, and the city entered into a 10-year contract company that built, designed and owns the facility. Mateo Ocejo, director of Net Zero Waste, said the city originally predicted about 7,000 tonnes of organic waste to come through the facility in the first year, but that has been raised to 11,000. That organic waste will become around 10,000 yards – each yard being about 27 cubic feet – of soil. Mayor Bruce Banman said one of the best aspects of Net Zero Waste’s system is the new and innovative technology it uses, which helps to keep the smell to a minimum, minimizing the impact on neighbouring communities. The system uses Gortex covers over the waste, reducing the odour by about 90 to 97 per cent. It also allows CO2 to pass through, retaining heat and allowing the compost to break down faster, in about six to eight weeks. The compost is brought into the facility and placed under covers for the first stage of breaking down. Once the smell is minimized, it’s moved outdoors and covered to continue the process with minimal smell.

Ocejo said they have received no complaints from neighbours about odours. Banman called the facility a “phenomenal success,” adding that diverting waste from landfills allows the city to spend less on tipping fees for garbage, which he said is important as Metro Vancouver works towards implementing a waste flow management plan – which would raise tipping fees. John Vissers, chair of the city’s environmental advisory committee, said that he is pleased with the facility. “We’ve been waiting for this for so many years. Finally we’ve got a very sophisticated, clean, efficient facility for turning our organic wastes into beautiful soil.” He said that Abbotsford’s higher than
anticipated diversion rates shows how ready the community is to participate. The city program currently collects only from single-family homes, and Vissers said the next step is to collect from multifamily residences and industrial and commercial enterprises. “The community is on board ... we just have to provide the infrastructure and make it happen.” Ocejo said that collecting from commercial sources like restaurants and grocery stores is an important step in garbage diversion, and Net Zero Waste is already planning its first expansion to accommodate more waste. The soil produced by Net Zero Waste is sold to landscapers, organic farms, and the public, and Ocejo said it is already being used on local sports fields.

Paul Henderson, manager of solid waste at Metro Vancouver, said those numbers are estimates, but it is assumed much is going into Abbotsford. The figures represent about five to seven per cent of the total waste, but Henderson said they are seeing an increase in waste bypassing the regional system as other garbage haulers could be deciding to bring trash to Abbotsford. FVRD directors have also repeatedly expressed concerns that waste control impacts competition by not allowing haulers to dump where the prices are lower. “They are creating a mo-

nopoly so they can charge whatever they want,” said Ross. The current tipping fee rate in Metro Vancouver is $107 per tonne, but is projected to be $158 per tonne by 2018. Metro Vancouver states that this is driven by a reduced quantity of garbage due to higher diversion, as rates must be raised in order to cover capital and costs. MURRAY Metro has also said allowing waste to leave the region limits their control, and could mean recyclables and other materials end up in landfills. But Ross said the FVRD and Metro should be
willing to work together create strict rules for all landfills and increasing diversion, instead of implemented waste flow management. Abbotsford currently brings its waste to the Mastqui transfer station – a part of the Metro Vancouver system. City manager George Murray said this is because it was the most cost-effective option, but the issue is currently under review. He said should it become financially prohibitive, Abbotsford would seek to bring its garbage elsewhere, possibly within the Fraser Valley Regional District. He added that currently Abbotsford is working towards diversion through composting and recycling initiatives, as “we think that is the most cost-effective way to approach waste.”

She was leaving a Bible study session at a friend’s Surrey apartment on Oct. 19, 2007 when she saw the vehicle: a shiny black BMW with a chrome front bumper. There were two men inside, Helen Lee testified on Monday during week two of the Surrey Six trial, and when they got out, she saw they were both wearing leather gloves and jackets with hoods covering their faces. A third man was holding a door nearby. Lee had gone to the Balmoral Tower apartment building in North Surrey that morning with her young son to get together with a group of women. Speaking through a Korean interpreter, she said she was leaving the apartment at about 2:25 p.m. when she saw the BMW “stalled” in the parkade, as if it was going to park. She stood with her son for about 20 seconds, waiting for the vehicle to move, and when it didn’t, they began walking. Suddenly, the car backed up and parked. She was “stunned” and “angry,” she said, because she and her son were almost hit. Then, testified Lee, she saw the expressions of the two men in the front seat of the BMW. “They seemed very angry,” Lee said. She was frightened and ran to her car. The two men in the BMW, one of them tall and one shorter, she said, got out of the car while a third – she wasn’t sure where he came from – held a door in the parking garage, as if waiting for people to go in and out. Lee was testifying Monday at the trial of Cody

Rae Haevischer, Matthew Johnston and Quang Vinh Thang (Michael) Le, who are all facing first-degree murder and conspiracy to murder charges. They pleaded not guilty on day one of the trial Sept. 30. During the opening of the trial last week, the Crown alleged two of the three who are on trial went to the Balmoral apartment to kill one man, but six ended up dead that day. The Crown’s theory is that Corey Lal, a drug dealer, was targeted by rival gang members and that his brother Michael, as well as Eddie Narong, Ryan Bartolomeo, gasfitter Ed Schellenberg, and Balmoral resident Christopher Mohan, were murdered to ensure there were no witnesses. It’s alleged Jamie Bacon (who will be tried separately at a later date) and Le ordered Haevischer, Johnston and another person who cannot be named to murder Corey Lal. The Crown alleges Haevischer, Johnston and another man took a BMW matching the description of Haevischer’s car to the Balmoral on the day of the murders. The Crown believes the murders took place at about 2:40 p.m. Following the shootings, it’s alleged, the accused went to a nearby apartment where Haevischer lived with his girlfriend. The accused, prosecutors theorize, changed their clothes, boiled a bag of cellphones, and then destroyed both. Haevischer then had someone take his BMW for cleaning, said the Crown. Testifying Monday morning, Lee said when she got into her car, she phoned the host of the Bible study session to tell her there were strange men in her building’s parkade. She told her to warn another woman who was there to wait awhile before leaving.

Longer terms overdue
A number of interesting motions and discussions arose from last month’s annual Union of BC Municipalities convention, including a proposal calling for extending terms of office for mayors and city councillors from three years to four. Bring it on. Anyone who has regularly watched municipal politicians in action or has served on such a board knows the avalanche of information the newest members must absorb. On top of learning the history of past decisions and choices to create the proper context for making good decisions, rookies must try to memorize the process and learn how best to work within those confines to be the most effective. In our estimation, it takes between one and two years minimum for an elected official to reasonably understand how to do the job. Therefore, this only leaves about one year of a three-year term that they’re
sufficiently proficient to best represent the people who put them into office. Extending a term by another year will give residents better bang for their tax buck, reduce election costs and council turnover, and put municipalities in sync with provincial elections. This timing would aid in limiting the costs some municipalities have had to accrue once a current mayor or councillor wins a provincial election, which, obviously, triggers costly byelections, such as the one about to happen in Coquitlam to the tune of around $140,000. The proposal passed with a 60 per cent approval rate, with one rural delegate stating the idea came from “professional politicians” in the Lower Mainland, where pay is higher. While that may be true, it doesn’t change the fact that this is an idea whose time may have come and it should be pushed forwarded as soon as possible.

Other Hand Its headwaters some five miles east of Allison Pass in Manning Park, the Similkameen River provides one of the most spectacularly scenic drives in Canada, if not North America. The route traverses dramatic climate changes, from the semi-rainforest of the North Cascades to the northernmost vestiges of the great Sonoran Desert. From Manning Park, Highway 3 follows the river, then its canyon, to Princeton where, at river’s edge the meandering stream offers up such treasures as Bromley Rock, in summer a magical place where with the scent of pines filling the air, you can swim in a deep hole or bask on a wonderful sandy beach. Further on the landscape expands into sagebrush, and along the way you can trace the remnants of the Kettle Valley Railway. Stopping just before Keremeos there’s an old wooden bridge reminiscent of the covered bridges that are treasured far to the
east of us. And at a pullout near the bridge on hot days, the heat and strength of the Ashnola wind that blows out of the valley to the south is incredible. But be careful because you’ve just entered rattlesnake country. Yet at this same place mountain goats and their kids are often seen crossing the highway from the river back to the craggy reaches that rim the route. And in the Ashnola itself, herds of bighorn sheep graze the mountain meadows. There is a legend that somewhere in the vicinity is the fabled “Spanish Mound,” a buried collection of armour and gear, and possibly bodies, that came north with a band of conquistadors. According to the story, the aboriginal residents didn’t appreciate this possibly antagonistic incursion of their lands and dispatched what may have British Columbia’s first tourists, covering evidence of their demise with a mound of dirt. The highway continues through ranchlands, the orchards giving way to vineyards scattered along river’s banks until the route rises through sagebrush to Richter Pass. It was here, not many years ago, that British Columbians rose up against a proposed hydro-electric dam at Shanker’s Bend near Oroville in Washington State. The reservoir created by that dam would
have flooded well into B.C., drowning much of the remarkable, and unique, environmental zone within the easternmost reaches of the Similkameen Valley. Our protests, and that of the B.C. government, caused the Americans to shelve the project.
How can we object to the Americans revisiting their plans, when we go ahead with our own on the same river? However, British Columbia won’t have a leg to stand on if, as proposed by Fortis Generation, a division of Fortis BC, a new dam is built on the Similkameen a few kilometres south of Princeton. How can we object to the Americans revisiting their plans, when we go ahead with our own on the same river? That Fortis’ dam is in a canyon, its reservoir flooding an area relatively out of sight (and thus out of mind?), an area that is scarred by a vast copper mine, will have little impact on U.S. decision makers – what’s
good for the gander is good for the goose, though I’m sure south of the border they’ll portray themselves as the gander. To be clear, Fortis claims its proposal does not impact the aforementioned spectacular scenery, though I have to wonder what eventual effect controlled water flows will have on the ecology of a desert climate that begins not too far to the east of its dam. The Similkameen east of the highwayside falls is considered, I’ve been informed, a popular paddling route and for the most part its canyon provides not only white water challenge but wonderful vistas. Haven’t paddled it myself, though like the original premise of the movie Deliverance, I might just do it before the route is flooded. My biggest concern, however, is that this dam is intended to generate enough power for only about 15,000 homes. Do we stem the flow of a currently wild (at least in B.C) river and possibly encourage the Americans to reenergize their dam plans for such a small increase in private power generation, particularly when BC Hydro could generate vastly more power by simply upgrading its turbines in existing mega-dams on rivers throughout B.C.? markrushton@abbynews.com

Let’s end our car obsession
I’ve always tried to avoid being cudgeled into using a car, finding that walking, cycling, carpooling, and using transit meet most of my transportation needs in a surprisingly cost-effective manner. Inter-regional connections however, have always been a problem. Getting to Chilliwack has been almost impossible. Now, with the impending advent of a Chilliwack to Langley (through Abbotsford) transit link, it will be possible to commute not only between Chilliwack and Abbotsford – but also access the Skytrain. Unlike some of the buses that lumber over our urban streets, here is a bus that isn’t obviously
out of place. Finally, it will not only be possible, but feasible, to do what our population density warrants: live a car-free lifestyle. Will it be easy? No. Will it sometimes be inconvenient? Will it save us money – especially in the long run? Reduce air pollution? Encourage physical fitness? Strengthen our social fabric? I expect the answer to all of these questions to be yes. I suggest that one thing we as an urban community need to collectively come to terms with is that we can’t insist on having a large urban population while continuing to live rural lifestyles. Need more reasons to end our obsession with cars? They
require enormous amounts of our most expensive and valuable asset – land, for parking and roadways – a cost that is incorporated into everything we buy. As well, since we all pay for health care through our taxes, the asthma, obesity, and lack of fitness that cars contribute to are a cost most of us don’t recognize, and they’re heavily reliant on large, likely unsustainable, resource inputs (energy and water), as well as significant subsidies. Let’s use some common sense and realize it’s time to put an end to this particular love affair. I think we’ll find that a healthy dose of re-localization will make us all better off in the long run. What about all the supporters I attended the public hearing at City Hall, Sept. 23, regarding Joshua House’s application for two recovery homes on farm property. But, after reading the article in the Abbotsford News, “Proposed supportive recovery homes on Abbotsford farmland raises concerns for neighbours,” (Sept. 26), I wondered if the reporter was at the same meeting that I attended. Yes, some neighbours of the proposal voiced their concerns
and fears – and it is important that your readers know of their concerns. But I think that your readers also should know that more people spoke in favour of the proposal and that a strong majority of those in the audience supported the proposal and Joshua House as a responsible community-based organization. Your article seems to perpetuate a certain view of Abbotsford. By ignoring the people in this community who showed their
support of Joshua House and who are committed to coming alongside men who are working hard to overcome their addictions, you appear to be downplaying the fact that Abbotsford has many caring people who are actively seeking solutions to our problems. An armed robbery on Thursday night at a pizza restaurant has similarities to two previous incidents in Abbotsford, and police believe the same culprit could be involved. The most recent robbery took place at a strip mall in the 30400 block of Blueridge Drive. Const. Ian MacDonald said a lone worker – a 28-year-old woman – was in the restaurant at about 8:45 p.m., when a man with a handgun burst in the door and demanded cash. The man was wearing black gloves and dark clothing, including a hoodie with the hood up. His nose and mouth were covered with a bandana. MacDonald said the worker gave the man access to the cash register, and the thief then ran MACDONALD away, heading west on Blueridge. The suspect is described as a Caucasian man, 20 to 30 years old. An almost-identical description was provided of the man involved in two prior robberies – one on Monday, Sept. 30 at a Subway restaurant in the 31900 block of South Fraser Way and the other on Sept. 16 at a McDonald’s restaurant in the 3200 block of Mt. Lehman Road. The suspect in both of those incidents was also carrying a real or replica handgun. Pilot makes belly landing A small aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing at the Abbotsford Airport on Friday afternoon. At approximately 4 p.m. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service and two ambulances were called to the airport in preparation for the landing. Assistant Fire Chief Ron Hull said the plane had a mechanical issue t VIDEINOE with its landing gear. L ON ws.com The plane approached the runway abbyne with its landing gear only partially w down. The pilot made a “belly landing� and skidded across the tarmac, spewing sparks. The plane slowed, turned slightly to the left and came to a stop. The pilot immediately jumped from the aircraft, and ran away from the scene as emergency crews rushed in to ensure a fire did not ignite. Hull said the pilot was the only person in the plane and sustained no injuries.

Cops for Cancer Tour wraps up
An 800 km bike ride around the Fraser Valley was a long trip, but participants of the Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley say it was worth the effort to help kids battling cancer. The tour brought together 25 law enforcement and emergency services personnel to raise funds for pediatric cancer programs and research. The ride began on Sept. 26 in Aldergrove and travelled through more than a dozen Fraser Valley communities, including Langley, Chilliwack, White Rock, Hope and Surrey. The riders stopped at schools and businesses to promote

The closing ceremonies were held Friday afternoon at Abbotsford Senior Secondary School, where riders were greeted with cheering students and the school’s drumline.

Central Fraser Valley Search and Rescue teams have been aiding in the search for a missing Abbotsford woman. A team of more than a dozen people was called out at around 8 p.m. on Sunday, and searched areas a VIDEINOE of Eagle Mountain ONLws.com and McKee Peak abbyne for Erica Grace Schmidt, 59. Sc Searches of different areas of Abbotsford continued on Monday. As of press deadline, Schmidt had not been located. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said police were notified at 12:20 p.m. on Saturday about Schmidt’s disappearance. He said she likely left the family home on Timberlane Drive sometime between 8:30

MacDonald said the main concern is that Schmidt did not take any of her belongings nor does she own a cellphone. She might have been wearing a red hoodie, but MacDonald said there are also indications that she left wearing only a housecoat. He said no one had heard from Schmidt by Monday afternoon nor had anyone come forward to say they had offered her a ride or shelter. A Facebook page – “Help Find Erica!” – has been set up to provide updates, including information about the search and tips that have come in. Schmidt is 5’4”, 140 pounds with short brown hair and blue eyes. Anyone with information is asked to contact the APD at 604-859-5225 or text abbypd (222973).
Former Abbotsford planner passes Colleagues, friends and family are mourning the passing of former City of Abbotsford director of planning Richard Danziger. Danziger died suddenly in Hawaii on Sunday, Sept. 29 while vacationing with his wife, Elke. He was 68. The memorial service at Woodlawn Funeral Home (2310 Clearbrook Rd. in Abbotsford) is scheduled for today, Oct. 8 at 6:30 p.m. The service will be fol-
lowed by a reception to share memories and stories of his life. Danziger worked for the city for almost 10 years and played a large role in the amalgamation of Abbotsford and Matsqui in 1995. In a written statement, Abbotsford planner Allan Campeau said Danziger “not only had the highest level of respect from the people he worked with, the development industry also held him in high regard.”

Ministerial visit gives opportunity for self-advocacy Alex BUTLER Abbotsford News
Joe Rikley and Bryce Schaufelberger’s work focuses on self-advocating for the needs of people with disabilities – work that includes ensuring the government has heard their needs and concerns. R i k l ey and Schaufelberger, who work for the HOMES Society in Abbotsford, run a website made by self-advocates with disabilities for others sharing their challenges. The website – selfadvocatenet.com – aims to use technology to help connect people with disabilities and let them share their stories, successes and challenges. Don McRae, minister of social development and social innovation, stopped by the HOMES Society – a group that organizes supportive housing for people with disabilities or mental health issues – on Monday as part of his tour around the province during Community Living Month in B.C. Community Living Month is designed to recognize the contributions of people with developmental disabilities and those who as-
sist them. This year’s theme is inclusion and employment. McRae will meet with local employers, service providers, home share providers and individuals to discuss
opportunity and challenges in the sector. One of those challenges, Rikley and Schaufelberger told the minister, is what they see as budget cuts to service providers.
In April, a new labour contract was ratified by unions and employers in the community social services sector, which provided a three per cent wage increase
for front-line workers, including people who work with those with disabilities. Rikley said that at that time, the government pledged to fund the wage increase. But
now it will not, which means community agencies will have to find savings internally in order to fund the wage increases. McRae said the government doesn’t see it
as a cut, as funds are not being taken away. But organizations will have to creatively find savings to pay the wage increases. “I want to make sure services aren’t cut.”

About 200 hundred mink escaped from a mink farm in West Abbotsford on Wednesday. The owner of the farm, who wished to remain anonymous, immediately alerted local residents, businesses, and motorists to the incident as a public service. The owner discovered the missing mink Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. upon inspecting the pens at her farm in the Lefeuvre Road and Downes Road area. The incident likely occurred earlier that day. She immediately recovered the majority of all 2,000 mink on her farm when they were temporarily at risk of escaping through an open door. It took another day before the remainder of the fugitives were brought back. “The farmer and some of her colleagues were running around pretty frantically getting as many as they could corralled,” said Const. Ian MacDonald on Thursday. The owner was concerned that the mink would target the poultry farms in the area. Mink are carnivores and prey on small mammals and birds. It is no longer necessary to report mink sightings to the Abbotsford police department. Even so, the local PD is still receiving “the odd phone call from neighbours who think they have spotted mink,” according to MacDonald. The farm is one of 10 mink farms currently active in the Abbotsford and Aldergrove area, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. The province has a total of 14 mink farms. There were 215,000 mink pelts sold in B.C. in 2010, the third largest number in Canada.

Fire prevention week will focus on kitchen safety Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service (AFRS) will be hosting family night open houses at all eight fire halls on Wednesday, Oct. 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. to educate community members about fire safety. This year’s Fire Prevention Week – Oct. 6 to 12 – will focus on preventing kitchen fires. AFRS will educate the public on the dangers of kitchen fires – most of which result from unattended cooking – and teach residents how to prevent them from starting. According to the latest research, cooking is the leading cause of home fires. Two of every five home fires begin in the kitchen — more than any other place in the home. Cooking fires are also the leading cause of home fire-related injuries. BEER “Often when we’re called to a fire that started in the kitchen, the residents tell us that they only left the kitchen for a few minutes,� said Fire Chief Don Beer. “Sadly, that’s all it takes for a dangerous fire to start. Comedy duo returns home Bernie and Red have performed for more than 25 years
Bernie and Red have been performing around the world for the past 25 years and during all that time they have made their home here in Abbotsford, although very rarely performing here. However on Sunday, Oct. 20 they will be performing at the Royal Canadian Legion in Abbotsford. Showtime is 2 p.m. Originally from Liverpool, England where they met as teenagers at the Cavern, watching the Beatles, Bernie and Red moved to Canada in the late ‘70s and since then have established themselves as one of the most popular and hardworking acts in Canada. They perform across the country and the U.S. and have travelled the world via their cruise ship bookings, going as far afield as Alaska, South America and Southeast Asia. Each winter they set out on an annual 40date tour, which includes stops in Texas, Arizona, California, Oregon and Washington State, attracting crowds of well over 20,000 in total. So, what’s the big attraction? It can be summed up in one word, “entertainment.” Whether it’s a

UFV golf teams sweep PacWest titles PacWest female golfer of the year, finished atop the individual standings with rounds of 80 and 76 to win by six strokes. Her teammates Kelley Dalzell and Jen Woods finished third and fourth, respectively. The Cascades men matched the women by winning their overall title by 50 strokes, easily out-distancing the Camosun Chargers, and by also winning their home tourney. It was a landmark weekend for the University of the Fraser Valley golf program, as both the men’s and women’s squads clinched PacWest conference championships. The freshly minted Cascades women’s team, competing in its first varsity season, won the title in decisive fashion, finishing 50 strokes ahead of runner-up Vancouver Island University over the course of three PacWest tournaments. Robert Bateman Timberwolves running back Ben Cummings ran wild on Friday, sparking his team to a 47-13 victory over the G.W. Graham Grizzlies in AA high school football action. The senior speedster shook loose for 255 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries, and added a fourth major on a 50-yard punt return as the host T-Wolves routed their Chilliwack visitors. “The offensive line’s really started to pick it up, and they opened up some holes,” Bateman coach Alfred Brathwaite analyzed. “Ben was able to recognize those holes, and then Ben did what Ben does.” Quarterback Daniel Mills also rushed for a pair of majors, and tailback Talus Swanberg chipped in with a 20yard scoring run. The defence was led by safety Tanner Friesen, who had six tackles, while twin linemen Josh and Jake Thiel combined for eight tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery. HANSEN 54, LANGLEY 13 The Rick Hansen Hurricanes’ shutout streak is over, but the offence flexed its muscles in a dominant home win over the Langley Saints on Friday. Zach Toews and Devin DaCosta led the charge for the Hurricanes. Running back DaCosta racked up 220 yards and three TDs on just 12 carries, including a 55-yard scoring run on Hansen’s first play from scrimmage. That kick-started the blowout – the Hurricanes led 28-0 by the end of the first quarter. “The outcome was decided pretty early,” noted head coach Paul Gill. “Our offence was humming along.” Toews, meanwhile, turned in a brilliant performance in all three phases – offence, defence and special
teams. He caught two scoring passes from QB Alex Ho, rushed for a major, and found the end zone for a fourth time on a kickoff return. He also managed six tackles on defence. Jimmy Brar rounded out the Hansen scoring with a one-yard TD run. The Hansen defence, coming off consecutive shutout wins over Bateman and G.W. Graham, finally surrendered points, but that’s not to say they played poorly. They racked up six interceptions on Friday, including two apiece from Prem Singh and Ricky Badesh. “I didn’t expect that (shutout streak) to last forever,” Gill said with a chuckle. highly ranked AAA teams was the definition of smashmouth football, and the Port Coquitlam-based Ravens clawed their way to a 17-7 victory at Mouat Field. No. 2-ranked Terry Fox built a 14-0 lead in the second quarter – highlighted by a blocked field goal return for a TD – but the No. 5 Hawks cut the lead in half on a 36yard scoring pass from Hunter Struthers to Jake Firlotte. But that was the last time they would find the end zone. After the Ravens stretched the lead to 17-7 with a field goal, the Hawks engineered a methodical fourth-quarter drive to march inside the Terry Fox 10-yard line. Defensive reinforcements paid off in a big way for the Abbotsford Pilots on the weekend. The local junior B hockey club won a pair of games – most notably, handing the previously undefeated Delta Ice Hawks their first loss of the season by a score of 4-3 on Friday at MSA Arena. It was no coincidence that Friday marked the season debuts of defencemen Simon Horlick (recovered from hip surgery) and Austin Edwards (returned to the Pilots from the junior A Surrey Eagles). “Getting Horlick and Edwards back really helped us,” Pilots coach Jim Cowden said. “I thought
we played very well defensively, and didn’t give Delta a lot of time and space in the neutral zone.” The Pilots also got terrific offensive contributions from Jarrett Martin and Jared Virtanen, who each notched a goal and two assists. Edwards and Brad Parker also scored, while Zachary Station made 29 saves in the win. On Saturday, the Abby squad picked up a 4-2 road win over the North Delta Devils, behind two goals from Parker and singles from Kolten Grieve and Dylan Cusmano. • The Pilots (5-3-1) visit the Aldergrove Kodiaks on Wednesday (7:15 p.m., Aldergrove Community Arena) and host North Delta on Friday (7:30 p.m., MSA Arena).

SILVA, Antonio Luis Jan 24, 1937 - Sept 25, 2013 Tony was born in Ponta Delgada, Flores, Portugal, and immigrated to the Lower Mainland finally settling in Abbotsford, where he accomplished his dream of a better life for his young family. Tony retired as a Roadmaster with B.C. Hydro Railway after a successful career. Tony is survived by his wife and life partner of 58 years, Gloria, sons, Val (Karen), Carlos (Jacki), Michael (Barb) and Daughter Maria (Ray), grandchildren, Ashleigh, Cassie,
Tony, Kristie, Dairien, Paige, Chase, Lachlan and great grandchild Ty. As a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Tony, will be sadly missed by all his family and friends. As requested a private service and burial has taken place in Abbotsford.

127 REMPEL, Frank Frank Rempel, born August 8, 1927 passed from this world October 1, 2013 surrounded by his family. Predeceased by his parents; his brothers, Henry and Bill; his good friend Jay Harper and his son-in-law John Martens. He is survived by his devoted wife Susie of 61 years, children Janet Kirichenko, Judy Martens, Lorne (Moira), Stan, Susan Burns (Keith), 9 grandchildren, 14 great - grandchildren, and step - grandchildren. Also survived by siblings, his twin sister Kay Klassen, Justina Morrison, Marion (Johnny) Schwiegert, John Rempel (Lee), Rita Dixon (Frank), and Jake. Frank was born in Davidson, Saskatchewan, August 8, 1927. He spent his boyhood years helping his Dad on the farm and enjoyed adventures with Jay and his brothers. In 1949 he left for BC on his motorcycle scouting out his prospects. A few years later he headed back to Saskatchewan where he married Susie Peters and brought her back to BC. They made their home in the Fraser Valley finally settling in Abbotsford where they raised their family. Frank made his living by working in meat packing companies, had his fun with the Abbotsford Gun Club, trap shooting, hunting, and fishing; spent his spare time helping others as a jack of all trades, and enjoyed his retirement hand crafting with wood. He was devoted to his wife, loved his children, enjoyed his grandchildren and was amazed by his great-grandchildren. His last years were spent in health battles, long and hard, cheating death often, until now…peace at last. A special thank-you to the nurses on Cheam 3, he could not have managed without you, especially Janine and Navjeet…amazing grace and compassion. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford, followed by a reception.
