The Sensible BC Campaign has until December 5, 2013 to gather enough signatures to force a province-wide referendum on the decriminalization of marijuana. The petition calls on the BC government to pass the Sensible Policing Act, which will stop police from searching or arresting otherwise law-abiding citizens for possession of marijuana. In order to get a referendum in September 2014, ten per cent of voters in every riding must sign the petition. The only petition to ever make it to the referendum stage is the HST petition. Sensible BC volunteers want theirs to be the next one. Heading up the campaign in Kimberley is Ashley Taylor. She says the hunt for signatures is doing well. “Things are going great,” she said. “It’s been very very busy! We have been signing up new canvassers throughout the district, but could always use more. We are feeling very confident though — things are looking good.

School District 6 staff are busy finalizing the report of enrolment numbers that will be submitted to the Ministry of Education based on numbers as of September 30. However, preliminary reports show that although enrolment continues to decline, that decline is slowing. “We are still declining as a District but the
students projected to be graduating, with 77 entering kindergarten. While those numbers are down from 10 years ago when graduating classes were over 100 students, they are also up in terms of how many are entering Kindergarten. There are also two large classes following this year’s Grade 12s. There are 96 Grade 11 students this year and 112 Grade 10s. Kimberley is projected to have 1,085 students in the various schools this year or
trend is flattening significantly, and appears to be pretty much flat in Kimberley,” said School District 6 Superintendent Paul Carriere. A good number to look at is the difference between students graduating Grade 12 and entering Kindergarten. For the past ten years or so that number has shown many more students graduating than beginning school. In Kimberley for this year, there are 79
1013.8 Full Time Equivalent students. That’s down only three students from last year and up 15 from 2010-2011. There are 332 students in the two elementary schools, 294 at McKim and 436 at Selkirk. The Windermere Zone is down 18 students with 1,090 FTE students and Golden is down 16.5 with 860 FTE students. District wide, that’s 2,965 students, down 38.4 from the previous year.

?aq?amnik? School students are enjoying their new Outdoor Classroom this year, thanks to the generous support of the Cranbrook and District Community Foundation and the Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds Grant. Students at ?aq?amnik? enjoyed their first year in a brand new school building last year. With the beautiful new building came an empty school yard that needed some TLC. We received a grant from Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds to purchase native trees and plants, which will provide the students with shade and a beautiful play space. We purchased the plants from Tipi Native Plant Nursery, and the students were involved in the process from beginning to end. They worked hard, digging holes, planting, moving bark mulch and watering and caring for the new plants. The experience provided them with opportunities to learn about and connect with nature, while also learning about plants that are native to the area. They also felt a great sense of accomplishment and pride in knowing that they made a significant contribution

to their school yard. As well as the plants and trees, the school had a goal of creating an Outdoor Classroom in which classes could spend time learning outdoors. Thanks to the Cranbrook and District Community Foundation, we were able to purchase large boulders
to be used as seats for the students. The boulders were placed in a semi circle, creating an Outdoor Classroom. The vision for the Outdoor Classroom is that students will use the space to learn about traditional language and culture, as well as other classes while connecting to na-

A dangerous offender hearing for Sparwood resident Randall Hopley will be held in Cranbrook starting on Monday Sally MacDonald Townsman Staff
The man convicted in the September 2011 abduction of Sparwood three-year-old Kienan Hebert is back in court starting Monday. Randall Hopley, 48, will be the subject of a dangerous offender hearing in Cranbrook Supreme Court October 7 to 11. In March 2012, Hopley pleaded guilty to abduction of a child under 14, and break and enter with the intent to commit an offence.
A sentencing hearing on these charges was held in Cranbrook last July. During that hearing, Crown prosecutor Lynal Doerksen asked the court to consider Hopley for dangerous offender status. Rarely used, the dangerous offender designation sets apart offenders of violent or sexual crimes who are deemed likely to reoffend and whose release is considered a threat to society. The dangerous offender hearing is a continuation of Hopley’s sentencing. On September 7, 2011, Kienan Hebert’s family reported him missing after they woke up and released the three-year-old son was missing from the home. berta, near the abandoned cabin where he had kept Kienan for four days. During Hopley’s sentencing hearing, the court heard that Hopley chose the Hebert home for his abduction plan because he noticed toys in the yard and found the front door unlocked. Hopley also said he returned the boy because he asked to go home.

Sensible BC’s campaign is proceeding apace. The group has gathered about one sixth of the petition signatures needed to force the decriminalization of marijuana to referendum. A 90-day countdown began Monday, Sept. 9, for a petition campaign to decriminalize simple possession of marijuana in B.C. Volunteers for Sensible B.C. have until Dec. 5 to collect more than 400,000 signatures. This number represents 10 per cent of eligible voters in each of B.C.’s 85 electoral ridings. In Kootenay East, 3,100 signatures are needed. “The campaign is well underway, “ said local organizer Barbara Kern. “Things are good. We’re getting noticed, we’re getting exposure.” Kern said that province-wide, about one sixth of the signatures needed have been collected, and that’s true for Kootenay East as well. The riding Sparwood, Elko, Fernie, Baynes Lake, Galloway, Jaffray, Moyie, Wardner, Cranbrook and Yahk. Sensible BC has about 25 volunteers working this territory. “We’re still looking for more volunteers and canvassers,” Kern said, adding that Sensible BC is expecting a surge of signatures in November. Locations to sign the petition in Cranbrook are in place, Kern said. The petition can be signed at the Cranbrook Farmer’s
Market on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (there are only two Saturday markets left in the season); at Hemp City/Dr. Love (121A 6th Street North), Wednesdays and Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.; and Kootenay Pawnbrokers (2420 30th Avenue North). Kern said there were more locations being set up, which will be announced at a later date. The same sort of campaign, under the same laws, was used three years ago to force repeal of the harmonized sales tax. The province-wide campaign is led by long-time marijuana legalization advocate Dana Larsen. Kern said that Cranbrook can also expect a visit from the campaign’s “Canna-bus.” Larsen has proposed that B.C. go around the federal prohibition with a “Sensible Policing Act” that would disallow the use of B.C. police resources to prosecute simple possession of small amounts of pot by adults. Marijuana possession cases still account for 60 per cent of drug violation reports to police in B.C., according to Statistics Canada figures from 2012. But the number of cases declined 10 per cent from 2011. There were 25,432 police-reported incidents of all types of drug offences in B.C. last year, a 7.4 per cent decline from 2011. Marijuana trafficking cases declined more than 20 per cent to 1,006 incidents, and importation and exportation of marijuana declined by 40 per cent. Marijuana growing cases declined 4.6 per cent, following a 28.6 per cent drop in 2011.

Ron Sexsmith plays Cranbrook Monday Barry Coulter
He is arguably Canada’s best and most renowned songwriter, and has been feted as such for years by the likes of Elton John, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello, and Paul McCartney. Only recently, however, has Ron Sexsmith started to receive the acclaim anyone who has heard his music insists he deserves. Though he regularly sells out shows in the UK and US, Canadian audiences are only recently starting to understand Sexsmith’s international reputation as one of our greatest. Sexsmith’s songwriting covers all aspects of the human condition. Lyrically, they are deceptively simple but crafted in such a way as to make them universally accessible. They can be melodically complex, drawing you in and rewarding you with something new with each repeated listen. On the heels of the release of his 13th album — “Forever Endeavour” — Ron Sexsmith is stopping in Cranbrook as part of a tour across Canada. He is bringing his enormous repertoire with him, and hot touring band, and an opening act who is considered a rising Canadian star. He spoke to the Daily Townsman last week from Toronto, shortly before heading west to start the tour, about the evolution of his songwriting, his approach to songwriting, and his thoughts on some of the heavyweights who’ve covered his songs. “The great thing about a song … you may be going through a hard time, and then someone writes a song that expresses that in a way that you understand, and then the music combined with that can make it a really comforting experience,” Sexsmith said of his art form. “Music has that kind of power that when it’s done right it can really change things.” Sexsmith started playing in bars in his Ontario hometown when he was a teenager. He acquired the reputation as “the human jukebox” for his ability and willingness to take requests. He says that
repertoire gave him a base and an education when he set out on his own songwriting career. “For about six years all I did was play cover songs,” he said. “I was very eager to please. It was helpful when it came time to write songs. I had this wealth of information — in terms of what you could or couldn’t do with the chords. It’s okay to go from C to E flat if you want to, ‘cause Paul Simon did that, you know. “And it helped just in terms of performing. I was 17, 18, and playing in places that I wasn’t old enough to be in. You’re dealing with a lot of drunk and rowdy people, so it helped being able to just get on stage in front of people.” The apprenticeship in the bars led to Sexsmith’s initial attempts to develop his own ideas around songwriting. “For a while, when I started, I thought maybe I needed to be like Elton John and find a lyricist to write lyrics for me,” he said. “When I was trying to write songs as a teen I didn’t really know what to sing about. But it worked itself out, and I found my approach. “I tried different things when I became a songwriter,” he said. “At one point I was trying to write these songs like Bruce Cockburn or Bob Dylan might, with a lot of verses. I realized I wasn’t good at that, poetically or metaphorically. “So it’s around that time that I wrote the song Secret Heart (off his 1995 major label debut album), which I felt was so simple. And I thought, ‘I have to try to stay in this place, writing almost like a ‘50s songwriter.’ I could imagine Buddy Holly or somebody doing that song. “So I’ve tried just to keep the words simple and conversational. And the melody will help that along. So that’s been my approach, is just to be really concise as much as possible.” Sexsmith said that in general, the melody of a song comes easiest. “I get melodies just while I’m doing the dishes, or whatever. But usually it comes with or suggests a phrase or idea. But I’ve

He was asked if there were any particular artists whose coverage of one of his songs most intrigued or impressed him. “The first one was Nick Lowe (a pivotal figure in the British New Wave scene) — he did Secret Heart,” Sexsmith said. “I was in England and he performed it live on a radio show back in 1996. It was really early on in my career. I remember that was pretty special. Since then, we’ve toured a bunch of times and become good friends. But that was pretty cool, I wasn’t expecting that. “Actually that song is probably my most covered song — Rod Stew-

started many songs with just the lyrics. So it’s really a marriage. I spend the most time getting the lyrics right.” Ideas for songs come at all hours of the day, or night. And one has to be prepared. “Sometimes it happens during the course of the day, when I’m out and I need to scribble down something,” he said. “I don’t carry a dictophone so if I get a melody in my head I basically have to commit it to memory. Sometimes something sounds really good the night before, and the next it doesn’t sound half as enchanting.” Sexsmith performs on guitar, but writes on guitar and piano. “Sometimes I’ll write the same song on both — I’ll start a song on piano

We’re both sort of craftsmen, try to be concise. “The other one, recently, was EmmyLou Harris doing a song of mine. It kind of came out of nowhere. It
was an ugly scene on Tuesday night in Montreal, as George Parros was taken off the ice via stretcher after smacking his face on the ice during a fight with Colton Orr. Parros, an enforcer for the Habs, fell in mid-swing after Orr, a defenceman for the Maple Leafs, making contact with his chin on the ice and sustaining a concussion. It was their second tussle of the night. Hockey is a game of skill and fighting should be eliminated, or at least, penalized more heavily than sitting in a box for five minutes. Indeed, a few high-profile general managers such as Steve Yzerman (Tampa Bay Lightning), Ray Shero (Pittsburgh Penguins) and Jim Rutherford (Carolina Hurricanes) came forward on Wedensday saying it’s time to eliminate fighting. Fighting in hockey is nothing more than a spectacle and serves as a cathartic release of emotion that would be better served by actually playing the game. Players themselves will argue otherwise, and hold on to fighting as a deterrent and a way to mete out pugilistic justice, which is completely understandable. However, scenes like what happened at the Bell Centre on Tuesday night are a reminder of why it should be banned. “You never want to see a guy get hurt
like that. It’s a scary situation,” Orr said in a post-game interview with the Montreal media. Intentional or not, Parros did get hurt, and was diagnosed with a concussion. Concussions have moved to the front of injury-related concerns in professional sports, especially in the NFL, which recently settled a $765 Trevor million lawsuit with 4,500 Crawley former players over concussion-related issues. Sidney Crosby, arguably one of the best players currently in the NHL, struggled with concussion-like symptoms after a hit to the head, missing the end of the 2011 season and sitting out for most of the 2012 campaign. The risk of sustaining a concussion or serious injury from one singular fight is relatively rare. It wasn’t a fist that injured Parros, it was his head colliding with the ice when he fell down. However, like with the NFL, it’s the repeated head trauma over time that exacerbates the damage and makes it more severe. It’s easy for people to be armchair critics about the role of fighting in hockey, but ultimately, the players will be the ones deciding whether or not to go at it during a game. The rules can ban fighting, but that won’t stop someone from dropping the gloves when a teammate gets a dirty hit

from behind into the boards with no penalty called. At the local level, the KIJHL has tightened up the rules on fighting. Like seasons past, offenders get a five-minute major and game misconduct. However, the league is tracking repeat offenders, and suspensions will follow — three fights is one game, four fights is two games, five fights is three games, and sixth fights is an indefinite suspension. Also, both the offending player and team coach will be ejected after a team’s second fight in one game. At the professional level, the role of the enforcer has diminished, but it’s still there. After Edmonton Oilers forward Sam Gagner broke his jaw while on the receiving end of a slash by Zack Kassian of the Vancouver Canucks, the former team went out and acquired Steve MacIntyre to add some physical intimidation to the roster. It’s going to take a lot to stop fighting cold-turkey in hockey without some pushback from those who still see it as a necessary part of the game, but a ban will hopefully cut down on the incidences like what we saw in Montreal. But even if an outright ban isn’t appealing to the players, maybe the league can look at using punishment for fighting as a deterrent to eliminate it from the game. “Brand Speak”
Realizing the City’s future rests on on engaged individuals and organizational leaders from across diverse sectors in the community, it’s believed that the City of Kimberley allocated approximately $80,000 to incubate a collaborative infrastructure to develop a Kimberley City “Brand”. Whilst there’s been nothing new to share in the ensuing 12 months or so, just yet, there’s much on-going work, right now, to synergize and finely tune the tools that will enhance an ability to communicate a vibrantly connected, cross-generational structural awareness to the Kimberley community. Refracting and distilling a great brand name for the Kimberley city is an extremely complex and unavoidably long-range social project. By thinking outside the box, the project aims to showcase everyone singing from the same song sheet at the
end of the day, 24/7, with a shared agenda and a coherent voice. Initially, much on the ground group and individual fact-time was involved with a variety of diverse stakeholders. Carefully prepared PowerPoint presentations, unique to Kimberley’s dynamic and its situational awareness, were an integral element in empowering and kickstarting twoway conversations preparatory to recording a graduated and complete community narrative which is still in the process of being brought to the table. Whilst nothing appears to be happening any time soon, ongoing research in the field is emerging with a complete snapshot, in time, of the community’s wellness, an holistic pattern of its cultural mores, its multifaceted identities and its aspirational memes. While much field evidence is still in the process of being forensically eyeballed, steps are also being taken to develop complex, groundbreaking computer modelling
algorithms to effectively data mine and showcase the Kimberley result for outcomes otherwise unrecognizable to the human eye. Aiding the core competencies of aggregating such a client centric $90,000 process, someone is kindly volunteering leverage to peel back the onion and push forward the Kimberley branding envelope right now. In creating this paradigm shift, there’s a suggestion that just one simple phrase stands out with an environmentally sustainable footprint. The phrase encapsulates the feathery and downy-white landscape of Kimberley’s winter wonderland. It also incorporates the gentleness of the remaining three seasons as well as the unwitting generosity of its people and the lingering impression this gives to the outside world: Kimberley – the Soft Touch. According to a recent survey, Pope Francis’ words and gestures have made him wildly popular among American Roman Catholics. He has sent shock waves into the Roman Catholic Church. But, as he said to the young pilgrims from Argentina, it is time for the church to get closer to people. It may get messy. It probably will. But often, such a mess is the playground of the divine. The bottom line is that I join those who cheer. We are seeing a Pope who wants the church to connect with the people on the street, speaking good news in a world which desperately needs to hear such good news. NHL slaps Roy with big fine after outburst in coaching debut with Avalanche ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - Patrick Roy says he has been fined $10,000 by the NHL on Thursday for his emotional outburst the night before in his Colorado Avalanche coaching debut. Soon after the final horn of a 6-1 win, Roy yelled at Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau and then pounded on the glass partition separating the two benches. Roy was livid over a late knee-to-knee hit on rookie Nathan MacKinnon. Roy said he will “always defend my players.” The animated Hall of Fame goalie was far from pleased with Boudreau, who took exception to Roy talking to his players and referees. Roy said: “What Boudreau said was all lies. ... When you’re lying, this is classless.” Captain Gabriel Landeskog missed practice Thursday with a leg injury. Roy said he’s being examined by a doctor. Agent says former CFL star signs with NFL team NEW ORLEANS - It didn’t take Chris Williams long to land in the NFL. The wide receiver, who negotiated his release from the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger Cats this week, has signed a contract with the New Orleans Saints, his agent said Thursday. Dan Vertlieb, Williams’ Vancouver-based agent, told The Canadian Press that Williams is headed to New Orleans. On Wednesday, Williams and the Ticats reached an agreement to allow CFL’s top special-teams player last year to pursue opportunities in the NFL. Contract details weren’t immediately available, but the 25-year-old Williams stands to make much more than the $48,000 base salary he was scheduled to earn this season in Hamilton. The NFL’s 2013 minimum salary is $405,000. Under terms of the deal with Hamilton, should Williams return to the CFL either this season or next, it must be with the Ticats. However, given that Williams received multiple NFL offers moments after being free to entertain them, it’s doubtful he’ll be back in Canada anytime soon. Canadian Press

There’s no place like home. Hudson Elynuik will be returning to Calgary when the Kootenay Ice take on the HItmen on Friday night, in the first part of a home and home series this weekend. Elynuik, a 15-year-old forward, is pushing for a full-time spot on the team this year after spending the end of the season and playoffs with the club last year. It will be special to step out onto the ice in the Saddledome, after growing up and watching the Hitmen and the Flames, where he will have an audience that includes family and friends. “For sure it’s special,” said Elynuik. “Friends, family, all your relatives, it’s always very special and very surreal having them there to support you.” Elynuik has grown up in the rink, both on and off the ice as a player and spectator by following the Hitmen and the Flames. His dad, Pat Elynuik, is a retired NHLer, who played most of his professional career with the Winnipeg Jets in the 1990s. “I’ve been in Calgary for eight years and got a pretty good look at the Hitmen for a while,” said Elynuik, “had season tickets to the Calgary Flames for a while and my dad was in the alumni for the Flames and got to go downstairs. “We knew Tony Amonte and he gave us a very good experience around the room with the Flames and overall, it was just a great way to grow up.” Fellow Ice teammates Matt Alfaro, Clint Filbrandt and Matt Thomas also hail from Cowtown After Friday night’s tilt, the Hitmen will come down to Cranbrook for a rematch on Saturday night at Western Financial Place. The Hitmen are expected to return another tough team this year after making a
run to the Eastern Conference final in the post-season, where they took the Edmonton Oil Kings to seven games. There are many weapons in their arsenal, but one name that sticks out is Jake Virtanen, a 17-year-old who is heading into his draft year and is projected to be a top pick. Virtanen tallied 16 goals and 18 assists last year for 34 points. He also captured a gold medal with Team Canada at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in August. Virtanen just so happens to be close to the family of Ice goaltender Mackenzie Skapski, as they both live in the same city of Abbotsford, B.C. “He’s a really hard-working kid, down to earth,” said Skapski. “He always comes over and plays road hockey with us and other activities, so we kind of know him well, me and my brother [Mitch Skapski]. “…He’s a very well-rounded player and has a lot of skill. Obviously, he’s a very fast player—probably one of the fastest in the Western Hockey League. He’s very good with the puck, and very talented. “He’s a big body, and if you give him room, he’ll capitalize with it.” American Invasion American excursions are rare for the Kootenay Ice, as the team heads down for a swing through the U.S. Division once every two years. On the off-years, it’s the U.S. division teams that come up to Cranbrook, but because of the geographical proximity of Spokane, the Ice and the Chiefs see each other more often during the season. The Ice will play host to their first American squad on Sunday when the Seattle Thunderbirds come to town. However, there is one player on the
Kootenay roster who has seen the T-Birds in action many times over the last couple years. Ryan Chynoweth, who has spent the last two years in the U.S. Division with the Everett Silvertips and the Tri-City Americans, was repatriated back to Canada following a trade to the Ice last week. “They’re a big, strong team,” said Chynoweth. “They’re normally four lines deep and they play all four lines. From experience, they’re always very physical and you just got to be smart against them. “Their defencemen are pretty big and maybe not the fastest, so just get pucks behind them and try to work them down there.” Chynoweth, who was picked up from the Americans by Kootenay in exchange for a fifth-round pick in 2014 WHL Bantam Draft, is still adjusting to his new surroundings, but didn’t hesitate to make an impression last weekend, with a fight and an assist against the ‘Canes and Pats. “Anything I can do to help—if it’s a fight or a hit or anything to keep the puck out of the net,” said Chynoweth. “It was pretty nerve-wracking coming and playing the first couple gams so hopefully it’ll go away here and just get down to playing hockey.” Even though Chynoweth grew up watching the Ice, which is managed by his father, Jeff, he is still stepping into a dressing room with some unfamiliar faces and is searching for his role on the team. “It’s never easy coming in as the new guy, but the guys have been really good to me and I knew a couple of guys on the team so that helps and it’s been nice getting to know everyone.” “…We got a bunch of offensive powerhouses, I don’t think that’s my role. Tens of thousands of starlings, an invasive species, will be killed annually in the Okanagan for at least the next three years.
KITIMAT, B.C. — The B.C. government says it will fund a $650,000-study to look at the environmental and health impacts of liquefied natural gas emissions in the northwestern city of Kitimat, where three LNG terminals have been proposed. A government news release says the study will assess sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide emissions from an existing aluminium smelter, the proposed
LNG terminals, a proposed oil refinery, a crude-oil export facility, and gas-turbine-powered electrical generation facilities. A contractor will also collect surface water and soil samples for analysis. Premier Christy Clark has pledged to develop the world’s cleanest LNG, an industry that she has touted will represent a trillion-dollar economic opportunity and will create 100,000 jobs for British Columbians.
Last month, Clean Energy Canada, an affiliate of Tides Canada, issued a report that warned natural gas-fuelled LNG operations in B.C. could emit more than three-times the carbon emissions produced at other plants around the world. A candidate to conduct the study has yet to be selected, and the government says the study is not expected to be completed until spring 2014.

KELOWNA, B.C. — Tens of thousands of starlings will be killed annually across the Okanagan for at least another three years, an effort to crack down the “blight” that threatens the region’s orchards. Local governments throughout the valley this fall are renewing their financial support for a control program that began a decade ago. The latest to sign up was the District of Lake Country, where council this week approved a budget request of $1,600. “The birds are a blight on agriculture, and given that Lake Country is over 40 per cent farming, this just seems like a no-brainer way to support our orchardists,” Coun. Lisa Cameron said. A total of $115,000 is spent each year to trap and gas starlings across the Okanagan, with an estimated 60,000 of the birds killed each year. Most of the money comes from taxpayers through regional districts, but funding is also provided by the BC Fruit Growers’ Association, the Okanagan Kootenay Cherry Growers’ Association, and the BC Grapegrowers Association. Even with the large-scale control program, starlings are still estimated
to cause $4 million in damages annually to Okanagan vineyards and orchards. Most trapping operations are conducted near feedlots and other cattle operations, where large flocks of starlings gather. Starlings were introduced to North America in 1890 by a group of New Yorkers who wanted to establish on this continent all the bird species ever mentioned in Shakespeare’s plays. The birds first showed up in the Okanagan in the 1950s. “This species is now firmly established across the entire continent and are one of the most common and widespread birds in North America. “Starlings are listed on the World Conservation Union’s list of the 100 Worst Invasive Species,” reads part of the control program’s website. In addition to eating and damaging fruit, starlings spread disease and drive native songbirds from their territory. “We’re not going to eliminate starlings, that’s never going to happen,” control program manager Connie Bielert has said. “The goal is to control them to the point where they don’t cause these huge problems for agriculture like they’ve done in the past.”

Paleontologists are busy in northwestern Alberta after a pipeline crew uncovered a fossil of a dinosaur. The fossil skeleton is of the creature’s tail, and experts believe the prehistoric beast may have been up to 10 metres in size. Paleontologist Matthew Vavrek calls the find this week near Spirit River “a significant fossil discovery.”
He said the challenge now is to carefully recover the fossil and perhaps find other parts to help determine the type of dinosaur. People working on the excavation include members of the Philip J. Currie and Royal Tyrrell museums. “I think the scientists on site believe that it is a hadrosaur, or duck-billed dinosaur, and it looks like there should be some additional parts of it still going back into the hill,” Andrew Neu-
man, executive director of the Tyrrell said Thursday. Hadrosaurs were slow-moving plant-eaters that grazed on all fours like a cow. The pipeline company was helping the scientists, loading the heavy fossil onto a truck where it is to be taken to a secure site for further study. Neuman said if the rest of the dinosaur can be found the discovery this week will become much more significant.

VANCOUVER — A new report from the Fraser Institute says the British Columbia and federal governments should settle outstanding aboriginal land claims in the province to eliminate the uncertainty that prevents investment. The report says unsettled
claims are a barrier to the mining industry in particular. It recommends an expedited treaty process and a mechanism to resolve asserted rights and title for bands not participating in the existing treaty process. Mining companies find themselves on the front lines of tension over aboriginal rights, it says.
In surveys conducted by the institute, mining company executives identified that uncertainty as the primary deterrent to investing in B.C. B.C. has more than 200 of Canada’s 600 first nations but has only seven treaties in place, with negotiations ongoing with 60 other groups.

In 1994, UNESCO proclaimed 5 October World Teachers’ Day, in celebration of the great step made for teachers in 1966 when a special intergovernmental conference convened by UNESCO in Paris in cooperation with the ILO adopted the ILO/ UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. This recommendation sets forth the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and international standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, teaching and learning conditions. It also contains many recommendations for teachers’ participation in educational decisions through consultation and negotiation with educational authorities. Since its adoption, the Recommendation has been considered an important set of guidelines to promote teachers’ status in the interest of quality education. In addition 5 October celebrates the adoption by the UNESCO General Conference in 1997 of the UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel. Why a day for teachers? World Teachers’ Day held annually on 5 October is a UNESCO initiative, a day devoted to appreciating, assessing, and improving the educators of the world. The real point is to provide a time to look at and address issues pertaining to teachers. Strangely one of the most central, vital professionals to society does not receive the respect it deserves in some parts of the world. WTD is a natural extension of UNESCO’s

that teacher respect is part of the natural order of things. Take the opportunity of the day to discuss, compare, learn, argue, share and improve. Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I love my husband, but I don’t like him anymore. He is disrespectful to me because I am overweight, and he has been after me for years to lose the extra pounds. He uses filthy language when he speaks to me and says it’s OK because I am disrespecting him by not losing weight. I’m 58 years old, have back problems, wear a size 8 and could stand to lose a good 15 pounds. I am an emotional eater. I lose the weight and then gain it back. But he acts as if I am 50 pounds overweight. Meanwhile, he is tall, thin, has a small beer belly and takes medication for his high cholesterol. My cholesterol is fine. I’ve asked him to go with me for counseling, but he won’t. I went alone years ago, but don’t see anything changing if he won’t go. This is so childish. He is so hateful of anyone who is overweight. I can’t take it anymore. I’m getting more depressed and have been seriously thinking of divorce. I want to leave and never come back. Any suggestions? -Any Name in Any City Dear Any Name: Your husband has become a bully and a verbal abuser. If he has an ounce of sense, he would know that this is not an effective way to get you (or anyone) to change your behavior. It’s simply a way for him to vent, and you are the target of his frustrations. Tell your husband you are ready to walk and that counseling may be the last chance the two of you have to work things out. If he still refuses, talk to a counselor on your own and figure out what you want from your marriage and whether it’s too late to save it. Dear Annie: I have been dear friends with “Nancy” for 10 years. I am worried about her mental health. Nancy has had many issues with depression. But in the past three months, her mother died unexpectedly, and then her mother’s house burned down. Her brother and stepfather were still living there. They are now living in Nancy’s tiny apartment. Her brother is a drug addict with a history of violent behavior. All of this is taking a toll on her, and I can easily see her slipping back into depression. Can you tell me of any free or low-cost places where she can go? She has no insurance and barely makes ends meet. -- Concerned Friend in Kentucky Dear Friend: We’ve printed this list before, but it bears repeating: Free and low-cost help is available through local churches, graduate school counseling departments, medical school psychology departments, United Way, the YMCA, YWCA, the Samaritan Institute (samaritaninstitute.org), NAMI (nami.org), and through support groups such as the Depression and Bipolar Alliance (dbsalliance.org) and the Abraham Low Self-Help Systems (lowselfhelpsystems.org). Dear Annie: As a breast cancer advocate, as well as being a stage IV breast cancer patient, I am concerned about the letter from “Torn Sister,” who says her older sister, “Johanna,” is using a breast cancer diagnosis to manipulate her family into buying her things. Receiving a diagnosis of a serious breast cancer, such as inflammatory breast cancer, is quite naturally upsetting. But expecting large sums of money from family members is unreasonable and something I’ve never heard of a cancer patient doing. Frankly, I wonder whether “Johanna” actually has cancer. I would not take her word for it. “Torn” could offer to go with her to an appointment with her oncologist or to a chemotherapy treatment. Obituaries Ryan Walter Duffy James Hardie It is with breaking hearts that we announce the sudden passing on September 25th of Ryan, our beautiful son, brother, nephew, grandson, cousin and friend.
Ryan was born December 28, 1982 to Toni O’Keeffe and Derek Hardie, at Burnaby General Hospital, to great fanfare and excitement as the first grandchild to both the Hardie and O’Keeffe families. Ryan lived in Surrey for 9 years before moving to Cranbrook with his mom Toni, and brother Korey. He had many happy memories in Cranbrook; sledding at Idelwild Park, hiking Lakit Lookout, riding for hours on his dirt bike and camping at Moyie and Jim Smith Lake. He was a strong athlete enjoying baseball, basketball, swimming, biking and jogging. He was a great chess player and enjoyed many hours playing with his dad Derek, Grandpa Walter and his uncles.

Ryan was a “gentle giant� with a huge heart, a deep love of nature and a love for animals. He was a great listener and had great compassion for those less fortunate. He was always interested in learning more about the world; watching documentaries, watching the late night news with Grandma Monica and reading in the library. He was an avid gamer and known internationally in the “Quake� community as “FAF Bono� and held several world records. Derek was his best friend and they shared a love of movies. He had recently taken up photography and his last pictures were taken atop the mountains around Squamish.

As the eldest of 15 grandchildren, Ryan was the “Leader of the Pack� and he loved hanging out with his brother and cousins, enjoying many happy road trips, camping trips and holidays with his big extended family. In his teens he lived with Derek in several different communities and always looked forward to exploring each new town especially the nature trails, lakes and rivers. Ryan grew into a big (6’3�), strong, young man. In his twenties he moved back to the mainland where he worked in construction which he was well suited for. He enjoyed being part of the crew and was always willing to lend a hand to others on the jobsite. His friends there will remember him for his enormous strength, his great sense of humour and infectious laugh.

Ryan is survived by mom Toni, dad Derek, step-dad Rob, brother Korey, Grandma Monica, Grandma Lalla, Grandpa Jim, and dozens of aunts, uncles and cousins. He is pre-deceased by Grandpa Walter who will welcome Ryan’s beautiful soul to be with him. A celebration of Ryan’s life will take place Sunday Oct 6th, 1pm, Tynehead Room 1, Sheraton Guildford Hotel, 15269 104th Ave - Surrey BC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your local SPCA in Ryan’s name. Condolences to the family can be sent to angelink@shaw.ca
