District releases budget survey results Carol Aun MISSION RECORD
Ninety-two per cent of Mission residents are satisfied with their quality of life in the community, according to results from the District of Mission’s 2013 budget survey. More specifically, 58 per cent rated their quality of life in Mission as “good,” 29 per cent said it was “very good,” and five per cent said it was “excellent”. Respondents also
listed the top three district priorities to be a safe and secure municipality, strong financial position, and infrastructure that is well maintained and sustainable. When asked what the most important issue the district faces today, 93 responders said the downtown and its revitalization, and 80 commented on business and the economy. “The results clearly support what we’re trying to do downtown,”
said Mission Mayor Ted Adlem. “At this stage I believe most people believe we’re taking the right tact to try to control costs.” This is the first time the district has reached out to taxpayers with a survey to determine what’s important to them. Council doesn’t want to increase taxes next year will consider the information as part of the budget process. Adlem says just because there isn’t any
new tax dollars coming in, that doesn’t mean there isn’t an increase in the district’s budget. In the last two years, the district has had about $800,000 in new tax revenue from new developments, he noted. The It’s Your Business questionnaire ran for one month this past summer and generated 651 responses. The full results are available at www.mission.ca.
Parade (Dec. 6),” Antonson added. “This year’s theme is the Winter Games.” The snowflake is the unofficial emblem for the event and Antonson has plans to encourage school-aged children to
make enough of them to “paint the town.” This is a chance for Mission residents to show their community pride, he added. The main special events, including the opening and closing ceremonies, will be held in Mission as well as most sporting competitions. Some events, however, will be held in other communities with larger venues, such as skiing on Hemlock Mountain, diving in Walnut Grove, and speed skating at the Olympic-size rink in Abbotsford. Biathlon will also be held in Callaghan Valley near Whistler. To learn more about the 2014 B.C. Winter Games and to get involved, visit bcgames. org.
“It’s a large consumer of police resources,” stated Wright, noting most of the time officers are dealing with cases of intoxication, drug use, Mental Health Act, and violence.
Gulati will be meeting with the mayor next week to discuss the cut. “The homeless won’t go away,” said Gulati. “They’re part of the community too and we have to work together.”
MISSION RECORD
About 500 people have signed up to help out at the 2014 B.C. Winter Games in Mission next year, but another 2,000 volunteers are still needed. The community awareness event at the Leisure Centre this past Saturday was just one of the activities put together by Games organizers to generate excitement and discussion for the February event. “Now the big push really begins,” said Brian Antonson, 2014 BC Winter Games president, who is confident more volunteers will step forward as the date approaches and people learn more about it.

Smash program in schools Mission Community Foundation contributed $1,000 to help bring MADD Canada’s Smash program to local schools this fall and winter. The new program demonstrates how easily and quickly a night of partying can turn to tragedy when someone makes the decision to get behind the wheel while impaired. Youth between 16 and 25 years old represented just 13.7 per cent of the population in 2009 but they accounted for nearly a third (31.1 per cent) of all alcohol-related road crash deaths, according to MADD Canada. Take-it-or-leave-it program
How kind that the industry group Multi-Material British Columbia (MMBC) is willing to give municipalities a few extra days to consider its proposal for picking up our cans, bottles and papers on their behalf. While the idea of the producers paying for recycling packaging and printed paper makes sense, the way this program appears to have been handled is shocking, to say the least. Among the many problems that mayors have identified are a take-it-or-leave it policy on accepting the terms; lower than practical contamination rates that could cost taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars; and low-balled fees for collecting the stuff via existing blue boxes and cart pick-up programs. Many cities were left scratching their heads when the producers group set a Sept. 16 deadline for accepting its terms (that date is now open ended for those needing time to consider), and offering a program that was less flexible than the existing, more or less successful, system. Ostensibly, MMBC would pay cities to collect the recyclables instead of replacing the existing system. Cities would be
QUESTION OF THE WEEK
reasonably compensated and the program could go ahead without taxpayers subsidizing the program. At the same time, producers would add the cost of recycling to the goods paid for at the till. Now, with the program in jeopardy, some cities may be opting out, which means consumers could pay twice: at the till and through their property taxes. More negotiation is clearly needed to sort this out and the province may have to step in to make sure any new producers-pay model is fair to all. In the meantime, cities need to do a better job explaining how to keep contaminants out of the recycling system and to show how taxpayers end up paying extra for putting non-recyclable stuff in their blue boxes and carts. Many people are still not on board with recycling, resent the imposition on their daily lives and do the job half-heartedly while others fill up their blue boxes properly and have leftovers with no place to store them. But if the producers do their job grudgingly, then how can we expect consumers to do theirs with care? – Black Press

Science loses ground to superstition Tom Fletcher
B.C. Views From Stockholm to Sydney to Sicamous, September was a bad month for science. In Sweden, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change finally issued its widely leaked update on human-caused global warming. As expected, it downgraded predictions of temperature rise in the face of 15 years of measurements that show little or no average surface temperature increase. The official spin also went as expected. The revelation that more than a dozen computer prediction models have all more or less agreed, and all have been wrong, was played down. The IPCC went from “very likely” to “extremely likely” to affirm its belief in human-caused warming, even as its own core evidence went the other way. Again and again we are told that the vast majority of scientists believe in human-caused warming, and those who don’t
are labeled “skeptics” or even “deniers” with hidden agendas. The problem is, science isn’t supposed to be done by polls or popularity contests, or assertions of faith like those that greeted Galileo’s wild claim that Earth is not the centre of the solar system. Before the angry mail starts to arrive, let me hasten to add I am not arguing for or against the theory of human-caused climate change. You can label me a “skeptic” as I view the temperature readings and the shifting theories advanced to explain them. Speaking of temperature data, David Suzuki had a problem with that at a TV town hall in Australia. Polite, well-informed questions soon revealed that while Suzuki rails constantly about the horrors of global warming, he doesn’t actually know much about the latest science. As I’ve written before regarding his CBC-funded attacks on Canada’s oil and gas industry, Suzuki is not only behind on his homework, he resorts to cheap, sensational tricks to exaggerate and misrepresent hazards. His tactics are identical to the U.S.-financed environment groups that obsessively target Canadian petroleum. As for his appearance on Australia’s public
broadcaster, don’t take my word for it. Just Google “An Audience with David Suzuki” and watch the show for yourself.
The problem is, science isn’t supposed to be done by polls or popularity contests… Back in B.C., local politicians gathered in Vancouver for their annual convention. One of the most intense debates was over a call to the provincial government to declare B.C. “genetic engineering free.” The heart of this movement, which has resorted to vandalism in Europe, is hostility towards Monsanto’s “Roundup ready” seed. Speakers at the municipal convention warned of sinister “corporations” trying to contaminate and control our food supply for profit. The debate pitted hobby farmers against professionals. Peace region grain farmers said
such a ban would put them out of business. Others pointed out that the province has no jurisdiction and that scientific decisions shouldn’t be influenced by emotion. The session ended with a classic pseudo-scientific claim. A woman who used to have a couple of bee boxes said someone’s bees died and there was a Roundup-ready canola field next door. Case closed. The misguided “G.E.-free B.C.” motion was supported by a narrow majority. As it turns out, there are agricultural pesticides that may be harmful to bees. The David Suzuki Foundation is part of an effort to get one of them banned in Canada. The problem is, it’s not Roundup, and it’s got nothing to do with genetic engineering. They’re called “neonicotinoids,” because they’re similar to nicotine. Old sheep farmers may recall using a crude version: tobacco soaked in water to kill insects on sheep. It’s ironic that as the “information age” accelerates, our society, overwhelmed by conflicting messages, slips back towards superstition. boxes of abandoned kittens to city hall? Make no mistake, this issue will have to be dealt with, whether Coun. Nundal likes it or not. Research has shown time and again that human well-being is enriched by its long association with pets. For many people, their pets are the only reason to carry on – this is especially true for those in need. Many homeless people have pets, and the FVHS has helped them care for their pets in many ways. Nundal seriously believe that we should return to those barbaric days? This is 2013, and many growing cities have incorporated ethical animal care services into their budget. Langley is a good example of how this can work well. How is city council going to deal with the repercussions if the FVHS is forced to close? Shall people bring their

I was shocked and disgusted by Coun. Larry Nundal’s flippant attitude regarding the plight of abandoned and abused cats and dogs in Mission. “It’s not our issue…,” he said. Well, it most certainly is! He implies that taking responsibility for the city’s animals should be swept under the rug in order to deal with “more important issues.” The Fraser Valley Humane Society is the only shelter for abandoned cats in Mission and has been struggling for years on a tiny budget. Seeing images of Earth from space can induce a variety of powerful feelings, from awe over its beauty to fear over its apparent fragility. Ours is a living, breathing planet and at least so far, we haven’t found any others where life occurs. Seeing pictures of the Earth from outer space is one thing; actually seeing the Earth from outer space is almost invariably a life-changing experience. Consider what various astronauts have said about their view of our planet from space. James Irwin remarked “That beautiful, warm, living object looked so fragile, so delicate, that if you touched it with a finger it would crumble and fall apart. Seeing this has to change a man, has to make a man appreciate the creation of God and the love of God.” Edgar Mitchell observed “Suddenly, from behind the rim of the moon, in long, slow-motion moments of immense majesty, there emerges a sparkling blue and white jewel . . . rising gradually like a small pearl in a thick sea of black mystery. It takes more than a moment to fully realize this is Earth . . . home.” Mitchell says elsewhere that “My view of our planet was a glimpse of divinity.” Finally, consider what Taylor Wang felt upon seeing Earth from space: “A Chinese tale tells of some men sent to harm a young girl who, upon seeing her beauty, become her protectors rather than her violators. That’s how I felt seeing the Earth for the first time. I could not help but love and cherish her.” Earth is our home and is entrusted to us for its protection. “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” Psalm 19: 1

Deroche author Daphne Sleigh’s newest book paints a detailed picture of one of the most talented yet unknown artists in B.C. Father Dunstan Massey has been the artist in residence at Mission’s Westminster Abbey since it first opened almost 60 years ago. Visitors to the popular Benedictine monastery often marvel at the paintings, sculptures and
stained glass work that line the halls and rooms of the church, but few take the time to discover that many of the great pieces were created by one man. Sleigh was familiar with Massey’s work even before she met him. “I’ve often been up to the Abbey and seen his sculptures and other works, said Sleigh, who had already written two biographies and was looking for another subject when the artist caught her attention. The catalyst was when she saw Massey’s work featured in a TV documentary seven years ago. “It occurred to me
that right here, where I live, is a wonderful artist, she stated. Sleigh was impressed with Massey’s versatility with different art forms from oil paints and ceramics to tapestries. “There seems to be nothing he can’t turn

his hand to, said Sleigh, whose favourite Massey piece is a mural called Tree of Life. The soft colours, graceful figures and symbolism portrayed captured her imagination. Massey is currently working on a silver-gilt crucifix which will hang over the alter when it’s completed. There are two currents running through Sleigh’s book, The Artist in the Cloister, The Life and Works of Father Dunstan Massey: the evolution of his art and the story about him growing up. “He was a child prodigy in art, explained Sleigh. “His talents were recognized at age 13 and he had sponsors who financed his art education. Massey was also a gifted musician, but at 18 years of age, he decided to enter the monastery. “He came from a deeply Catholic family. Teachers tried to dissuade him and get him to pursue the arts, but he persisted. Massey finally became a priest at age 31. Sleigh is a local historian and author who has been writing books since 1972. Her works include Discovering Deroche, which won the Lieutenant-Governor’s Medal from the B.C. Historical Federation, and three biographies. The Artist in the Cloister is available at Black Bond Books in the Junction, Mission Arts Centre, and the Mission Visitor Centre on the Lougheed Highway.

MLAs Open House This Saturday Mission’s MLAs, Simon Gibson and Marc Dalton, are hosting an open house this Saturday, Oct. 5, from 1 to 4 p.m. at their constituency office, 33058 First Avenue (across from the Mission Record). “We’re inviting everyone to drop by,” Gibson, MLA for Abbotsford-Mission said. “It will be a great opportunity to connect and just get acquainted.” Gibson is beginning his first term as an MLA - succeeding Randy Hawes who has retired - and Marc Dalton was recently re-elected for his second term for the riding of Mission-Maple Ridge. “I look forward to meeting with constituents,” Dalton noted. “Simon and I hope that many people will take the time to connect with us and our staff.”
Constituency assistants Jean Dykshoorn and Mark Duyns, who organized the event will be present. Come meet the team and enjoy some refreshments. “Some people may be familiar with the location,” Gibson said. “We have assumed the existing office although it has been renovated and now features a wonderful display of the work of local artists.” A number of Lower Mainland MLAs and Mission council members have also indicated they will be attending the open house. RSVP is not necessary but if Mission residents would like to find out more, they can contact Jean or Mark at the office at 604-820-6203.

My father enjoys retirement since he moved to Cedarbrooke Chateau Elmar RESIDENT
“I have more friends than I’ve ever had...”
Cedarbrooke Chateau is the perfect home. My personal suite is decorated with special mementoes and comforts of the house I shared with my wife before she passed away. The services and amenities at the Chateau lets me rest with ease knowing help, if I need it, is right here. I enjoy working in the gardens, going for daily walks — in rain or shine — and making new friends. I have more friends than I’ve ever had and I truly enjoy speaking German with some of them. I attend happy hour almost every afternoon with my friends, but my favourite celebration is Octoberfest at Cedarbrooke Chateau, when I can put on my favourite lederhosen, drink from my stein and dance to the festive music. Mission has been my home since I moved here with my wife in 1954 from Germany, and the independent lifestyle and full service retirement home at Cedarbrooke Chateau will keep me in this community for many, more years.
Carlo ELMAR’S SON
“I can go away for the weekend and not worry...”
I like the changes in my dad since he moved to Cedarbrooke Chateau four years ago. Dad stayed for about a year on his own when mom passed away, but it was tough. Cooking, cleaning and looking after the house was more than he could handle. We toured retirement homes and within no time of seeing Cedarbrooke Chateau, dad was convinced it was the place for him. After moving him in here, he never wanted to go back to his house — that’s how comfortable he is here. The staff is amazing and they keep me in the loop if any issues arise from him. They look after his dietary needs and with the many social events and outings available, he always has something to tell me when I visit. I know he’s well cared for and content, and I can go away forr a weekend and not worry about it. It gives me a lot of peace of mind. We should be proud we have this facility in Mission, and wee are so lucky to have a place like this when we need it.

Protect your home with insurance DAVE EBNER
A house is often the single largest financial investment you can make, and without insurance, your most valuable asset is vulnerable to loss, said Dave Ebner of Johnston Meier Insurance Agencies Group at the Junction Mall. “Insurance allows the homeowner to
protect their investment.” According to Ebner, fire coverage is one of the most basic types of insurance you can purchase and most policies cover much more than a fire. There are a few variations of cover-
age offered today, but the two most typical policies offered to homeowners is broad form/comprehensive coverage and fire and extended coverage. Broad form/comprehensive coverage offers the most broad coverage, but as is with all policies, there are exclusions, said Ebner. Fire and extended coverage, while not as
comprehensive, still provides coverage for fire, lightning, smoke, falling object, impact by aircraft, spacecraft or land vehicle, riot, water damage, wind-
storm, hail, vandalism or malicious acts, burglary and robbery. All other losses are excluded. “I recommend meeting with your broker to
determine what coverage is best for you,” Ebner advised. “Ask questions and provide as much information as you can to ensure you understand what
is covered and what is not. Ensure your broker understands your situation. I can’t stress enough how important it is to communicate with your broker.”
“Fire prevention is important because it makes people aware that fires can be prevented and to teach the kids about fire safety in there homes, and to get out safely and stay out. Also, always check smoke detectors and have two safe ways out of your house with a meeting place.” Steve Howell, Fire Chief North Fraser Fire Department
Smoke alarm maintenance Smoke alarms should be maintained through regular testing, cleaning and battery replacement. Test in accordance
with manufacturers’ instructions or once a month by pushing the test button and listening for the alarm. For battery oper-
ated smoke alarms, replace batteries at least once a year or when the smoke alarm makes a chirping sound. Clean smoke
alarms regularly, at least once every 6 months by vacuuming the exterior. Smoke alarms should be replaced at least every 10 years.
When was the last time you oke alarm? tested your smoke A fire at home can occur in just about any room of the house.

HERE ARE SOME OTHER TIPS TO HELP PREVENT KITCHEN FIRES: Q
MIKE SCHMIDT Kitchen fires happen too often, and the majority are preventable. Unattended cooking is too often a significant factor in the cause of kitchen fires. The average small kitchen fire can cause damage in excess of $50,000 dollars and displace residents from their homes from three to six months or more — not to mention the threat to life safety while others are sleeping. When your kids are old enough to start cooking, teach them to stay in the kitchen while the stove or oven is on, and remove all cooking utensils from the stove top when finished. Never leave cooking unattended. Oil or fat can easily ignite. Always turn elements off when you are finished cooking. Cooking requires you to be alert. Avoid cooking when under the influence of alcohol or medications. Avoid wearing loose sleeves that may dangle into flames or onto hot elements. Prevent burns by turning pot handles toward the back of the stove when cooking. This will prevent pots from being pulled or knocked off the stove.

Thanks to their special compound, winter tires offer the elasticity required to ensure maximum grip throughout the cold season, regardless of the road conditions. Summer tires can become hard when the temperatures fall below 7 degrees Celsius, thereby losing the flexibility needed to build up sufficient grip for braking, starting off, and cornering. Because of their greater suppleness in the cold, winter tires are able to interlock with the asphalt, snow, and ice, even at lower temperatures.

OBITUARIES
ALEXCIA MCKAMEY 2012-2013 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our angel, Alexcia Myanna McKamey, on Sept. 20, 2013. During her short time here with us she touched many lives and was loved deeply by family and friends. She is survived by her parents, Jacqueline McKamey, and her step-father, Sean Gutteridge; Grandparents, Dave (Shelley) McKamey, and Shelley Bonderoff; Great Grandmothers, Marlene McLean and Barb Strachan; as well as numerous Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins. A funeral service will be held at Northside Community Church on Oct. 5, 2013 at 2pm. (33507 Dewdney Trunk Rd., Mission, BC.)
SCHMIDTKE BARNETT, Shirlie Alison (Richards) Mar 11, 1931 - Sept 22, 2013 Shirlie passed away peacefully at her home on Hatzic Lake with her family gathered around her. Shirlie was born in Vancouver, the youngest child of Nan and Russell Richards of West Vancouver. She is predeceased by her husband, Michael and her sister Virgina Bazilli, survived by her brother, Peter Richards (Barbara), her five children; Russell (Debbie), David (Karen), Penny (Scott), Robert (Rachelle), Nicola (Grant), 17 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. As a child, Shirlie and her family moved to Trail in 1933 where she spent a very happy childhood and attended Trail’s Tadanac High School. Shirlie was a true adventurer, and will be remembered for her zest for life, excitement and fun. In the 50’s, Shirlie moved back to Vancouver, where she married her husband Michael and continued her busy life, working full-time while also raising her five children, but she never gave up the opportunity to find time for skiing and travel. Shirlie loved her children dearly, and they are grateful to have had a mother that loved her children unconditionally. Shirlie gave everything to her children, often at the sacrifice of her own happiness, knowing that by giving and seeing joy in others, she would achieve her own happiness. These last 4-5 years had been difficult for Shirlie, but through it all, she held her head up, and battled through with an incredible amount of determination and courage. We are thankful that through this journey she was not alone. She was loved and surrounded daily by her five children, their families and by dear friends and supporters alike. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 5th at 4pm, at St. Bride’s Anglican Church, 12109 Harris Road, Pitt Meadows, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Red Cross.

Envision employees KiKaBoe bead work displayed make a difference Carol Aun
MISSION RECORD
Envision Financial employees spent a day volunteering at the St. Joseph’s Food Bank on Seventh Avenue Tuesday as part of the organization’s Make A Difference Day. Now in its seventh year, this special day is a two-week long volunteer opportunity for the credit union’s
employees to contribute to non-profit organizations in the community. “I live in Mission and it’s nice to help out in the community I live in,” said Envision’s Whitney Bressel. Envision has also been running the Full Cupboard program this year, which
collects donations for local food banks, added Brenda Richards. Last year Envision employees provided 825 hours of volunteer work throughout communities across B.C. The local group will also be helping out at SAINTS Rescue in Mission on Sept. 24.
Beads have been keeping Antoinette Wessels happy and grounded for decades. The Mission artist discovered her love for them when she was a teenager. “I got very ill and there wasn’t much I could do to fill my days until I discovered the little seedbeds and started playing with it,” she recalled. “The more I got into it,
the more I liked working with it.” Her first creations were bead earrings which she bestowed upon family and friends. Not only did she find something to do to pass her time in bed, she also learned her work could bring happiness to others. Wessels creates each piece with different colours and textures. “My passion is bead weaving. Working on a project bead by bead is
very exciting.” When she begins a new project, she often doesn’t know what it will be like when it’s finished. About a year ago, Wessels started making her own unique beads, and incorporates other pearls, crystals, and semi-precious gemstones into her pieces. Wessels works out of a shop from her Mission home called Studio KiKaBoe. KiKaBoe has the same meaning as
“peekaboo,” which brings happiness and laughter, she explained. “People come to my studio and sometimes I don’t hear the doorbell, and they look happy, with a big smile through the window. Until the end of this week, work from Studio KiKaBoe is on display at the Mission Leisure Centre. For more information, visit the studio online at www.studiokikaboe.com.
