B.C. police chiefs are urging the provincial government to give their officers more power to haul gangsters out of bars and restaurants. That’s one of the suggestions received so far by the government’s liquor policy review, which is expected to lead to significant reforms. “The province has been dealing with a wave of gang violence with many shootings occurring in and around licensed premises,” Abbotsford Police Chief Bob Rich said in a submission to the review. Rich, who chairs the legislative committee of the B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police, called for province-wide police power to unilaterally remove anyone they decide poses a risk to the public in a licensed establishment. He said police already work with establishments through the Barwatch program to remove gang members, but owners or staff can be intimidated by gangsters. “It’s the licensed premises that primarily has the authority to have people leave its premises if it’s concerned, but that’s difficult with gang members,” Rich said. Before Abbotsford’s Ed Schellenberg was murdered in a Surrey apartment building in 2007, a co-manager of the building suggested he service the fireplace in suite 1505 instead of his young co-worker nephew because of the type of people she saw coming and going from the unit. Supreme Court in Vancouver on Tuesday at the trial of three men accused of first-degree murder and conspiracy in connection to the deaths of six men in the Balmoral Tower apartment building on Oct. 19, 2007. The execution-style mass murder that took place in suite 1505 has since become known as the Surrey Six. Schellenberg, 55, who was servicing fireplaces in the building on the day of the murders, was considered to simply be in the wrong place at the wrong time, as was 22-year-old Chris Mohan, who lived next door. The four other victims – Edward Narong, Ryan Bartolomeo, and brothers Corey and Michael Lal – had ties to the drug trade and were known to police. Cody Rae Haevisher, Matthew Johnston and Quang Vinh Thang (Michael) Le are currently on trial for the murders. Carothers told Justice Catherine Wedge that she often saw many “scruffy” peo-

She went to her own suite and after about 45 minutes, became concerned she hadn’t heard from Schellenberg. She sent her husband, Norman Carothers, looking for him. Norman was the first witness to take the stand at the trial Monday. He said after his wife asked him to find Schellenberg, he went to suite 1505. He heard music inside the apartment and knocked loudly on the door several times, but there was no answer. He then knocked on the Mohan’s suite next door. There was no answer. He looked in other areas of the building for Schellenberg and checked his van outside, to no avail. Norman then returned to the suite 1505. He opened the door and saw six bodies on the floor.

The police chiefs association also wants the definition of public drunkenness expanded to allow the arrest of people intoxicated by drugs, and not just liquor. The submission also suggests the courts could order detoxification and treatment for the chronically intoxicated. Another proposal would let police temporarily seize the guns of hunters they catch RICH with open liquor. Medical health officers are cautioning the government against letting liquor flow more freely. They want the province to freeze or cut the number of private liquor re-

tailers and ban online ordering and delivery. To combat disease from abuse of cheap high-alcohol drinks, they are seeking a minimum price of $3 per standard drink consumed on site and $1.50 for off sales. They also want pricing tied to alcohol content, so youth and others aren’t encouraged to buy high-strength drinks. They oppose any decrease in the drinking age of 19. The province has indicated it isn’t considering changes to pricing or taxation, which provincial health officer Dr. Perry Kendall said is unfortunate. “Policy measures such as taxation are the most cost-effective public health response to the alcohol-related disease burden in countries with moderate and high levels of alcohol consumption,” he said in response to the review. Kendall questioned the government’s

top priority of increasing or maintaining government liquor revenue – ahead of the second principle of minimizing health and social harms – and argued health system and other costs of alcohol use far exceed government revenues. Meanwhile, a group called Campaign for Culture is promoting a return of happy hours and also urges the province to okay the sale of craft liquor at farmers’ markets. B.C. is the only province that bans bars and restaurants from offering happy hour discounts in the late afternoon and early evening. While the group supports lifting the restriction, it argues for a province-wide price minimum to prevent irresponsible practices like two-for-one, all-you-candrink or women-drink-free offers. An armed robbery at a local restaurant has Abbotsford Police concerned that similar incidents could occur. On Monday night at about 9:45 p.m., a man entered a Subway restaurant in the 31900 block of South Fraser Way. He approached an employee at MACDONALD the cash register, produced a handgun and demand cash. “The 18-year-old cashier is pretty shaken and she struggled initially to get the cash register open, just because she’s so frightened,” said Const.

Ian MacDonald. A second employee observed the robbery but was not able to call for help because of the positioning of the suspect. The man fled from the restaurant once he obtained the cash. Neither of the female employees was harmed but both were extremely upset by the incident. A police dog was brought in but the suspect was not located. “We were on scene pretty quickly. We’re thinking he either had a bicycle or a vehicle waiting.” The suspect is described as a Caucasian male, 25-35 years of age and approximately 5’10”. He was dressed in dark or black clothing with a hoodie pulled up around his head and a bandana over part of his

face. MacDonald said about two weeks ago, an armed robbery took place at a McDonalds restaurant on Mt. Lehman Road. “Certainly we have to consider the possibility that those are connected,” said MacDonald. He added that police are always concerned that an armed robbery could eventually become a “spree” of robberies. “We’ve experienced that with the Subway spree that we had a couple of years ago so we are extremely concerned right now and want to get the word out to business owners.” Anyone with information about this incident should call the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225 or text 222973 (abbypd) or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-2228477.

B.C. Views From Stockholm to Sydney to Sicamous, September was a bad month for science. In Sweden, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change finally issued its widely leaked update on human-caused global warming. As expected, it downgraded predictions of temperature rise in the face of 15 years of measurements that show little or no average surface temperature increase. The official spin also went as expected. The revelation that more than a dozen computer prediction models have all more or less agreed, and all have been wrong, was played down. The IPCC went from “very likely” to “extremely likely” to affirm its belief in human-caused warming, even as its own core evidence went the other way. Again and again we are told that the vast majority of scientists believe in humancaused warming, and those who don’t are

labeled “skeptics” or even “deniers” with hidden agendas. The problem is, science isn’t supposed to be done by polls or popularity contests, or assertions of faith like those that greeted Galileo’s wild claim that Earth is not the centre of the solar system. Before the angry mail starts to arrive, let me hasten to add I am not arguing for or against the theory of human-caused climate change. You can label me a “skeptic” as I view the temperature readings and the shifting theories advanced to explain them. Speaking of temperature data, David Suzuki had a problem with that at a TV town hall in Australia. Polite, well-informed questions soon revealed that while Suzuki rails constantly about the horrors of global warming, he doesn’t actually know much about the latest science. As for his appearance on Australia’s public broadcaster, don’t take my word for it. Just Google “An Audience with David Suzuki” and watch the show for yourself. Back in B.C., local politicians gathered in Vancouver for their annual convention. One of the most intense debates was over a call to the provincial government to declare B.C. “genetic engineering free.” The heart of this movement, which has resorted to vandalism in Europe, is hostility towards Monsanto’s “Roundup ready” seed. Speakers at the municipal convention warned of sinister “corporations” trying to contaminate and control our food supply for profit. The debate pitted hobby farmers against professionals. of business. Others pointed out that the province has no jurisdiction and that scientific decisions shouldn’t be influenced by emotion. The session ended with a classic pseudoscientific claim. A woman who used to have a couple of bee boxes said someone’s bees died and there was a Roundup-ready canola field next door. Case closed. The misguided “G.E.-free B.C.” motion was supported by a narrow majority. As it turns out, there are agricultural pesticides that may be harmful to bees. The David Suzuki Foundation is part of an effort to get one of them banned in Canada. The problem is, it’s not Roundup, and it’s got nothing to do with genetic engineering. They’re called “neonicotinoids,” because they’re similar to nicotine. Old sheep farmers may recall using a crude version: tobacco soaked in water to kill insects on sheep. It’s ironic that as the “information age” accelerates, our society, overwhelmed by conflicting messages, slips back towards superstition. Downtown at risk

After the threat on ABDA’s window, personal attack on Tina Stewart and attempted smearing of the Salvation Army’s reputation, it was nice to see both sides presented. What appears to have been forgotten is how Abbotsford’s Downtown area was several years ago. Heck, you didn’t even feel safe at the Berry Festival, never mind the Christmas Tree Lighting! Now the streets are clean with lovely, well-tended hanging baskets. There are a variety of interesting shops and restaurants, some new, some long-standing giving stability to the area. And we are starting to feel safe again! Do I have compassion for the homeless? Yes, but we need to look at the location of where the Abbotsford Community Services and BC Housing wish to put its facility. ACS provides day care, some senior services and many people with

different types of disabilities also attend there. Transit also has a transfer place right in front. What is the safety of those people going to be like? There is a rumour of an elementary school very close to this proposed site. I have read the ACS and BC Housing brochure, but very little is said. And please folks, the Christine Lamb Residence for women and their children is second stage, where this proposal is low barrier or first stage. Please do not confuse the two as they are two different places for two different causes. The people who have businesses, their employees as well as those who shop downtown also need to be considered. Many are concerned about their safety or seeing a really nice downtown going back to the way it was. It is indeed a balancing act. Bonnie Joerger

House insurance, if you have any, covers only what the Insurance Companies pick and choose. Fatal crash kills woman Single vehicle accident occurred Tuesday night

An Abbotsford woman has died following a single-vehicle accident around 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Police say a woman and man, both in their 40s, were driving in a vehicle that went off Clearbrook Road in the 3100 block and rolled over into a yard. Police and ambulance responded to the accident and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The man, who police believe was driving the vehicle, was taken to hospital with minor injuries and has since been released. Collision reconstructionists, the forensic identification unit and major crime detectives have responded due to the seriousness of the crash. Police have yet to determine the cause of the accident, but Const. Ian MacDonald said they are considering all contributing factors. Police are appealing to any witnesses to come forward.

At first glance, he thought it might be a gas leak and propped the door open for air flow, running to a man he thought was Schellenberg and pulling him by the feet to drag him out. Then he looked around the room and realized it was something more sinister. He saw pools of blood by the heads of two of the motionless bodies. He took the wrist of one man to check for a pulse but found no signs of life, he testified, wiping tears as he recalled the grisly scene. Norman told the court he left the suite without touching anything else, and told a neighbour and his wife to call 911. Tracy Carothers said she first called only for an ambulance, but then called back to request all emergency services. On Monday, the first day of trial, Crown prosecutor Mark Levitz delivered his opening statements, SCHELLENBERG contending that Corey Lal was the intended target on the day of the murders, and that the other five victims were killed to eliminate any possible witnesses. Photos were shown in court of the victims lying in two groups of three, side by side in pools of blood, their heads covered with hoods. Levitz alleged Johnston, Le and Haevischer were all part of the Red Scorpions gang who were aiming to control the local drug trade. Corey Lal was a rival drug trafficker who was operating on their turf, said Levitz, and when he didn’t pay up when demanded to do so by Jamie Bacon (who is also charged in the Surrey Six case, but will be tried separately), Bacon and Le ordered Haevischer, Johnston and a third person who can’t be identified due to a publication ban, to murder Corey Lal. All the victims were executed, said Levitz, each suffering at least two gunshot wounds, mostly to the head and neck. Levitz said two handguns were used in the murders, and 19 shots were fired. Haevischer and Johnston both face six first-degree murder charges in connection with the deaths of all six victims, while Le has one first-degree murder charge related to Corey Lal's death. All three also face one conspiracy to murder charge for Corey Lal's death. All three pleaded not guilty Monday to each charge. Jamie Bacon will be tried separately at a later date on first-degree murder and conspiracy charges.

An Abbotsford author has been nominated for the Governor General’s Literary Non-Fiction Award. Trudy Beyak, a former long-time Abbotsford News reporter, released The Mother Heart of God: Unveiling the Mystery of the Father’s Maternal Love earlier this year. The book, published by FaithWords (a division of the Hachette Book Publishing Group), discusses the nature of God as seen through the eyes of more than 50 leading scholars and celebrities from North America to the Middle East. The Governor General’s BEYAK Literary Awards are given annually to the best English-language and the best French-language book in each of the seven categories – fiction, literary non-fiction, poetry, drama, children’s literature (text), children’s literature (illustration) and translation (from French to English). Finalists were scheduled to be announced yesterday (Oct. 2) on the awards website (ggbooks. canadacouncil.ca), but were unavailable by press time. Winners of the awards will be announced in mid-November.

The project will house men who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in our community. This Public Information Forum will allow all members of the community to interact with ACS staff and project partners, while learning more about the proposed facility. Additionally, 90 minutes will be allocated to give attendees an opportunity to share their thoughts publicly through a ‘town-hall’ format that will be professionally moderated.

Benefit concert Clifford fundraiser on Oct. 11

Local bands will come together to support youth music programs at a concert and barbecue on Friday. Oct. 11. The concert will be held at the University of the Fraser Valley in Theatre B101 from 5:30 to 10 p.m, with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to the Devon R.B. Clifford Memorial Foundation. The foundation – created to honour the member of Abbotsford band You Say Party, who passed away in 2010 following a brain hemorrhage – supports music programs for youths and young adults that are financially disadvantaged. The concert will feature local bands Oh No! Yoko, Young Liars, Varsity Girls and Oh Village. Tickets and burgers are $5.

A B.C. Supreme Court judge is scheduled to give a decision Nov. 27 on whether an Abbotsford man is criminally responsible for his sister’s murder. Harmohinder Khosa, 43, admitted to killing his sister, Amarjit Khosa, 34, in March 2011, but his lawyer argued that Khosa is not criminally r e sponsible d u e to a ment a l disor- HARMOHINDER KHOSA der. The Crown argued that Khosa should be found guilty under the law and serve a criminal sentence. Khosa’s trial concluded last week in New Westminster. Amarjit was found dead in her basement suite in the 32000 block of Austin Avenue in Abbotsford. If Khosa is found not criminally responsible due to a mental disorder, he will have a hearing before the B.C. Review Board to determine whether he receives an absolute discharge, a discharge with conditions, or detention in a psychiatric hospital. If he is found criminally responsible, he receives an automatic life sentence with parole eligibility set at between 10 and 25 years.

A class project at W. J. Mouat Secondary will tackle the question “What can we do to eradicate poverty in Abbotsford?” Mouat vice-principal Vijay Manuel said the project will involve almost 30 students in a Grade 11 and 12 acting class. In a process known as “problem-based learning,” the students will first discuss, develop and execute a plan to gather information. This could include doing online research, bringing in guest speakers or visiting service providers in the community. They will then discuss their findings and come up with a list of recommendations, resulting in a presentation to a panel in mid-November. Manuel said the presentation will be done in a creative way, as determined by the students. The project panel includes groups such as the United Way, Abbotsford Community

Services, the school district, the Abbotsford Youth Commission, and the police and fire departments. Manuel said the initiative will be documented by video every step of the way and will be

more dominant as the issue of homelessness developed in the community over the summer. Mission singer releases new CD Concert in Abbotsford on Oct. 19 Mission singer/songwriter Cathy AJ Hardy performs in a CD release concert in Abbotsford on Saturday, Oct. 19. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium (32315 South Fraser Way) and will support three organizations – Mennonite Central Committee’s End Abuse program, the Fraser Valley Women’s Resource Society, and Mark Centre. Hardy is releasing her new album “I am she … a soul’s journey home.” “The ‘I am she’ song is the essence of the woman who now knows that deep healing love and has been transformed,” Hardy said. HARDY “This is my story. It is a very personal album in that all of the songs arise out of the story of my personal journey, but I trust that they are songs we can all relate to in our stories of transformation.” Hardy’s own journey with hurt and hardship enables her music to resonate with others also experiencing difficulties. When her last album, Love Shines, was just being released, her 24-year marriage was coming to an end, leaving her devastated and heartbroken. “I allowed myself these past two and a half years to process and heal the closing of a long-term marriage. I am so grateful for this journey and all the gifts that have been discovered along the way. I waded through intense grief and the frightening realities of being alone,” she said. Music academy opens

A new free music academy in Abbotsford opened its doors on Oct. 1. The Bakerview Music Academy (BMA) is located in Bakerview Church, 2285 Clearbrook Rd. The program starts with 30 children from under-privileged situations. They are offered a snack plus two hours of professional classical music instruction twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays). All the children have the opportunity to learn one instrument – either the violin, cello or piano – and will sing in the choir. The program is inspired by the “El Sistema” system in Venezuela and by the St. James Music Academy in East Vancouver. The program in Venezuela currently has more than 350,000 children enrolled in free music instruction. In some cases, the kids attend four or five times a week.

Every Girl Matters Day Event organized by GirlKind The GirlKind Foundation in Abbotsford hosts the first Every Girl Matters Day on Friday, Oct. 11. The event is being held in partnership with the Centre for Indo-Canadian Studies at University of the Fraser Valley (UFV), 33844 King Rd. GirlKind asked the provincial government to proclaim Every Girl Matters Day throughout B.C. in conjunction with the UN’s Day of the Girl to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges they face around the world. A free celebration will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 11 at UFV, where Abbotsford West MLA Mike de Jong will present the proclamation for Every Girl Matters Day. Throughout October, GirlKind is holding a worldwide Every Girl Matters Photo Campaign, asking the public to participate in answering the question as to why girls matter. SEKHON More information on the campaign is available at girlkind.org. The GirlKind Foundation was formed by Deesh Sekhon of Abbotsford who previously held the Save a Girl campaign to collect clothing and personal hygiene items for a girls’ home in India. This past summer, almost 1,000 items were sent to a different home in India, and more drives are planned in the future. The organization received its charitable status from Revenue Canada this year. Sekhon was inspired to raise awareness about the issues of gendercide and gender discrimination after viewing the documentary It’s a Girl. The film was shot in India and China and tells the story of abandoned and trafficked girls not wanted by their parents in cultures where sons are prized.

United Way offers grants The United Way Fraser Valley has $90,000 available in grants for programs focusing on reducing poverty, reducing homelessness or ensuring the success of children six years old and under. Funding will be distributed in April 2014. Any charitable organization in the Fraser Valley may apply for a grant to address one of those issues. To be eligible, programs or projects must be preventive and be for a new project, the expansion of a program or to continue a currently funded program. The application deadline is 4 p.m. on Nov. 15. Applications for grants are available online at uwfv.bc.ca

under “What We Do.” In April of this year, priority grants were distributed to 14 local organizations for 15 different projects in the Fraser Valley. Funded projects mostly focus on skills development, including for youth to maintain housing and for single mothers to assist with employment opportunities. The Women’s Resource Society of the Fraser Valley received two grants. One provided funding for services to assist women in securing safe permanent housing. The second provided group and individual counselling for women after experiencing trauma and violence in their lives or who are currently staying in one of their five housing programs.

Cedarbrooke Chateau is the perfect home. My personal suite is decorated with special mementoes and comforts of the house I shared with my wife before she passed away. Successful food drive

More than 300 volunteers in Abbotsford and Mission helped make the recent BC Thanksgiving Food Drive (BCTFD) a success in their communities. Throughout the province, the drive collected an estimated 402,000 pounds of food for 50 local food banks. The event involved flyers and donation bags being dropped off in neighbourhoods, with a request for residents to fill the bags with non-perishable food items and leave them on their doorsteps for pickup on Saturday, Sept. 21. In Abbotsford, the BCTFD event included more than 270 volunteers providing over 450 hours of service to the community. They visited some 10,200 homes, and collected more than 14,200 pounds of non-perishable food for the Abbotsford Food Bank. In Mission, the event included more than 60 volunteers providing over 150 hours of service to the community. They visited about 5,500 homes, collecting more than 7,900 pounds of food for the Mission Food Bank at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Abbotsford Food Bank executive director Dave Murray and his Mission Food Bank counterpart John Poston said the agencies appreciate the muchneeded contributions.

ALEXCIA MCKAMEY 2012-2013 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our angel, Alexcia Myanna McKamey, on Sept. 20, 2013. During her short time here with us she touched many lives and was loved deeply by family and friends. She is survived by her parents, Jacqueline McKamey, and her step-father, Sean Gutteridge; Grandparents, Dave (Shelley) McKamey, and Shelley Bonderoff; Great Grandmothers, Marlene McLean and Barb Strachan; as well as numerous Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins. SCHMIDTKE BARNETT, Shirlie Alison (Richards) Mar 11, 1931 - Sept 22, 2013 Shirlie passed away peacefully at her home on Hatzic Lake with her family gathered around her. Shirlie was born in Vancouver, the youngest child of Nan and Russell Richards of West Vancouver. She is predeceased by her husband, Michael and her sister Virgina Bazilli, survived by her brother, Peter Richards (Barbara), her five children; Russell (Debbie), David (Karen), Penny (Scott), Robert (Rachelle), Nicola (Grant), 17 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. As a child, Shirlie and her family moved to Trail in 1933 where she spent a very happy childhood and attended Trailâ€™s Tadanac High School. Shirlie was a true adventurer, and will be remembered for her zest for life, excitement and fun. In the 50â€™s, Shirlie moved back to Vancouver, where she married her husband Michael and continued her busy life, working full-time while also raising her five children, but she never gave up the opportunity to find time for skiing and travel. Shirlie loved her children dearly, and they are grateful to have had a mother that loved her children unconditionally. Shirlie gave everything to her children, often at the sacrifice of her own happiness, knowing that by giving and seeing joy in others, she would achieve her own happiness. These last 4-5 years had been difficult for Shirlie, but through it all, she held her head up, and battled through with an incredible amount of determination and courage. We are thankful that through this journey she was not alone. She was loved and surrounded daily by her five children, their families and by dear friends and supporters alike. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 5th at 4pm, at St. Brideâ€™s Anglican Church, 12109 Harris Road, Pitt Meadows, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Red Cross.

Stephanie Lynn Mary Stephanie Lynn Mary Schmidtke

born on August 3, 1992 was Abbotsfordâ€™s BC Day baby that year. On September 24, 2013 at the age of 21, Stephanie passed away in a tragic car accident. Stephanie was an angel on earth who impacted countless lives with her enthusiasm, optimism and heart for her Lord that she shared openly and honestly. Stephie leaves behind her mom and dad Evan and Shelley Schmidtke; her older brother Kristopher Schmidtke; grandmother Lynn Smith; grandparents Paul and Darleen Schmidtke as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, many friends and the love of her life Nicholas Goertz. Stephie had a passion for people and was finishing her 3rd year in the Bachelor of Nursing program at MacEwan University. She had been looking forward to using these skills overseas to make a difference in helping others. A Celebration of Stephanieâ€™s Life will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church, 22550 Township Road, Sherwood Park, AB. SILVA, Antonio Louis Jan 24, 1937 - Sept 25, 2013 Tony was born in Ponta Delgada, Flores, Portugal, and immigrated to the Lower Mainland finally settling in Abbotsford, where he accomplished his dream of a better life for his young family. Tony retired as a Roadmaster with B.C. Hydro Railway after a successful career. Tony is survived by his wife and life partner of 58 years, Gloria, sons, Val (Karen), Carlos (Jacki), Michael (Barb) and Daughter Maria (Ray), grandchildren, Ashleigh, Cassie,

Tony, Kristie, Dairien, Paige, Chase, Lachlan and great grandchild Ty. As a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Tony, will be sadly missed by all his family and friends. As requested a private service and burial has taken place in Abbotsford.

Was born March 22, 1940 in Kinistino, SK and on September 25, 2013 passed away peacefully with her family at her side after a hard fought battle with cancer. She is predeceased by her husband Dennis Nordstrom, parents, Helen and Arthur Kurtz and brothers, Arthur and Mervyn Kurtz. She will be sadly missed by her sisters, Mabel Brieter of Birch Hills, SK, Violet Malmgren of Melfort, SK, Gladys Larson of Kinistino, SK, Laura Uhrum of Edmonton, AB, Marie (Ted) White of St. Albert, SK, Joan Baudais of Saskatoon, SK; brothers Howard Kurtz of Saskatoon, SK, Gary (Linda) Kurtz of Saskatoon, SK, Leon (Bev) Kurtz of Hope, BC, and Donald (Wendy) Kurtz of Edmonton, AB; sister in law Barb Kurtz of Cochrane, AB; and many loving nieces and nephews and friends.
