Final input to Pelmewash design KEVIN PARNELL Lake Country residents showed up in full force last week to get a look at the concept plan for Pelmewash Parkway as the District of Lake County held another open house, allowing the public to give further input and get a look at the concept plan for the roadway. Close to 80 residents showed up at municipal hall on Sept. 24, hearing from consultants that have put together a concept plan using information gathered from the public at previous input sessions. About half the folks who turned out filled out a comments form giving further input while comments are still being accepted until Oct. 8. (See story below.) “From what I can gather the response was very favourable for what was proposed,” said Lake Country councillor Owen Dickie. “It’s very much going to be a rec-
reational corridor with a narrow roadway that will allow for through travel and has the ability to isolate pedestrian and bike traffic from the road.” Among the items that have been taken off the agenda is the potential closing of the road in the middle of Pelmewash Parkway. Dickie said that is no longer an option and the road will remain open to through traffic, although what’s up in the air is the use of the road by commercial trucks. “There are some trucks that are using it now, big rigs that are pulling into the pullouts and parking, as well as gravel trucks from the Oyama gravel pit,” said Dickie, adding that Lake Country council was leaning towards closing the road to commercial traffic in the future. With the district not expected to take over control of the road until sometime next year, council still can’t make any firm decisions on potentially closing the road to rigs. “There was pretty

Last Friday’s was a House Team Colour Spirit Day where students dressed in their house team colours, (red, yellow, green or blue). These houses each are connected to a Japanese name for warrior – Samurai, Red; Bushi, Yellow; Musha, Green; and Tsuwamono, Blue. House points are awarded to students for exceptional behaviour and citizenship, and also weekly House Games.

Upgraded Beasley Centre ready for action The Beasley Community Centre was officially re-opened over the weekend, after the completion of renovations and the installation of a second set of playing field lights. The $620,000-project is now complete and featured many improvements. The District of Lake Country received a $400,000 grant from the B.C. Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development’s Community Recreation Program to go towards the upgrades at the facility while the district put up the rest of the money. “This community centre renovation project and the increased programming that goes with it encourages healthy living and provides recreational opportunities for people of all ages and abilities,” said Lake

• Fitness system mounting • Upgrade of interior lighting • Relocated the sound system • New heating and ventilation system • Renovated washroom facilities • Installed field lighting towers and lights. The project will serve a population of up to 21,500 people, including Lake Country’s many seasonal residents and visitors, and it provides expanded opportunities for sports clubs from other communities to visit when local groups host tournaments using the upgraded Beasley facilities. The addition of field lights on Beasley #2 field allows for an increase in use to the sports fields by over 200 hours per year. “The revitalized Beasley Community Centre will serve the fam-
ilies of Lake Country by expanding the opportunities for community events and organized sport,” said MLA Norm Letnick. “Our provincial contribution of $400,000 is an investment in this community, and along with the tireless work with our friends at the District of Lake Country, has made this project a reality.” The province’s $30-million Community Recreation Program was developed to help local governments meet the costs of capital projects that make communities healthier, more active places in which to live. Through the program, the B.C. government has provided grants for 98 recreation projects throughout B.C., to help fund everything from bike paths, trails, fitness facilities and walkways to playgrounds and recreation centres.

Water system passes real-time test during heavy rains Heavy rain last week tested part of the new Lake Country water treatment system and residents of the Oyama Lake source were protected due to the system’s ability to react to higher than normal levels of bacteria. About 270 residents who get their water from Oyama Lake were first given a boil water advisory and then a boil water
notice over two days last week when several heavy rainfalls resulted in the presence of bacteriological indicator organisms which included e.coli. Lab test results returned last Wednesday and Thursday showed no bacteria present for two days of testing and by Friday night the boil water notice was lifted. Once test results
found the bacteria, residents were immediately switched off the Oyama Lake source and placed on the Kalamalka water source, avoiding any potential problems. “We were pleased to be able to lift the boil water notice for the Oyama service area,” said Michael Mercer, director of engineering and operations. “With the increase in
seasonal rains and the scheduled irrigation turn off for the Oyama Lake source (in mid-October) we are confident in the system’s ability to meet the water needs of the area using the UV-treated Kalamalaka Lake source water until the 2014 irrigation demands require the use of the Oyama Lake source water again.” The district also said
water quality monitoring is a routine part of the protocol in place to ensure safe, potable drinking water for the community. System upgrades in recent years have made it easier to respond to unexpected events such as what occurred in Lake Country this week after numerous heavy rainfalls throughout the Okanagan Valley.

Thief targets vehicles Police are looking for witnesses who might have information regarding a string of Lake Country thefts over the last week. On Sept. 22, at 11 p.m., the Lake Country RCMP received a report of a theft from a vehicle on the 11300 block of Bottom Wood Lake Road. An unknown man was seen entering a black Toyota Tacoma before fleeing the scene with a small amount of loose change. Since then, there have been at least 10 other reports in Lake Country of a similar nature that police believe could be related. A possible suspect has been identified but police are looking for witnesses who can link him to these or other, previously unreported thefts. The suspect is described as: • Caucasian
• 29 to 30 years old • 6 ft tall and 190 lbs with a medium build • Scruffy beard. The suspect was last seen wearing a dark track-style jacket, green shorts and light-coloured sneakers. Anyone with any information regarding the identity of the suspect, or unreported thefts from vehicles, are asked to call the Lake Country RCMP at 250-766-2288. Science loses ground to superstition F rom Stockholm to Sydney to Sicamous, September was a bad month for science. In Sweden, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change finally issued its widely leaked update on human-caused global warming. As expected, it downgraded predictions of temperature rise in the face of 15 years of measurements that show little or no average surface temperature increase. The official spin also went as expected. The revelation that more than a dozen computer prediction models have all more or less agreed, and all have been wrong, was played down. The IPCC went from “very likely” to “extremely likely” to affirm its belief in human-caused warming, even as its own core evidence went the other way. Again and again we are told that the vast majority of scientists believe in human-caused warm-

Tom Fletcher ing, and those who don’t are labeled “sceptics” or even “deniers” with hidden agendas. The problem is, science isn’t supposed to be done by polls or popularity contests, or assertions of faith like those that greeted Galileo’s wild claim that Earth is not the centre of the solar system. Before the angry mail starts to arrive, let me hasten to add I am not arguing for or against the theory of human-caused climate change. You can label me a “sceptic” as I view the temperature readings and the shifting theories advanced to ex-
plain them. Speaking of temperature data, David Suzuki had a problem with that at a TV town hall in Australia. Polite, well-informed questions soon revealed that while Suzuki rails constantly about the horrors of global warming, he doesn’t actually know much about the latest science. As I’ve written before regarding his CBC-funded attacks on Canada’s oil and gas industry, Suzuki is not only behind on his homework, he resorts to cheap, sensational tricks to exaggerate and misrepresent hazards. His tactics are identical to the U.S.-financed environment groups that obsessively target Canadian petroleum. As for his appearance on Australia’s public broadcaster, don’t take my word for it. Just Google “An Audience with David Suzuki,” and watch the show for yourself.
Back in B.C., local politicians gathered in Vancouver for their annual convention. One of the most intense debates was over a call to the provincial government to declare B.C. “genetic engineering free.” The heart of this movement, which has resorted to vandalism in Europe, is hostility towards Monsanto’s “Roundup-ready” seed. Speakers at the municipal convention warned of sinister “corporations” trying to contaminate and control our food supply for profit. The debate pitted hobby farmers against professionals. Peace region grain farmers said such a ban would put them out of business. Others pointed out that the province has no jurisdiction and that scientific decisions shouldn’t be influenced by emotion. The session ended with a classic pseudo-scientific claim. A woman who used to have a couple of bee boxes
said someone’s bees died and there was a Roundup-ready canola field next door. Case closed. The misguided “G.E.free B.C.” motion was supported by a narrow majority. As it turns out, there are agricultural pesticides that may be harmful to bees. The David Suzuki Foundation is part of an effort to get one of them banned in Canada. The problem is, it’s not Roundup, and it’s got nothing to do with genetic engineering. They’re called “neonicotinoids,” because they’re similar to nicotine. Old sheep farmers may recall using a crude version—tobacco soaked in water to kill insects on sheep. It’s ironic that as the “information age” accelerates, our society, overwhelmed by conflicting messages, slips back towards superstition. avian assembly is “a murder of crows,” but I consider that a prejudiced description for some of the most intelligent creatures on the planet. The crows were all lined up, all facing the same way. I counted over 70—totally covering the wires stretched between not just two but three telephone poles—when, without a sound, without a signal, without a single caw, they all took off at once into the vineyard. I’ve read theories about why birds of a feather flock together, and why fish swim in dense schools. It’s an instinctive response, apparently, designed to confuse predators. But there

Don’t blame judge for fatal accident ruling Celebrating 50 years of excellence
T
he acquittal on Wednesday of a distracted driver charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death is hard to take for the families left to mourn the young couple who lost their lives. The tragic event occurred near midnight on Oct. 19, 2010. It took almost three years for the criminal charge against the distracted driver to make its way through the court system and result in the verdict this week. The distracted driver testified in her own defence. While doing so, she broke into tears as she apologized for the loss of life. There was no disputing the fact that she was the one behind the wheel of the car that launched into flight after hitting a concrete median, smashing into the young people’s Suzuki Swift, ripping the roof off and killing the young occupants. There was also no disputing the fact that the crash occurred because the distracted driver, travelling along the Lougheed Highway in Pitt Meadows, had pulled around traffic that had

stopped at a red light at an intersection she was planning to pass through, and into a “right turn only” lane going highway speed. The dispute was whether or not the distracted driver had committed the criminal offence known commonly as “dangerous driving causing death”, prohibited by section 249 of the Criminal Code. A conviction would have resulted in consequences to the distracted driver and a sense of justice for those left behind. The judge hearing the case reportedly believed that the distracted driver’s actions were careless, but not criminal, noting that in order for the distracted driver to be found guilty of the crimes there had to be a “marked departure” from accepted norms of driv-
ing behaviour. The inattention shown by the offending nurse returning home late at night after an upsetting emergency room shift was not the “marked departure” that a criminal conviction requires. The Criminal Code section was considered by Canada’s top court last year in a case called R v. Roy. The court had this to say about the distinction between a “mere” departure from a standard of driving care and a “marked” departure: “Simple carelessness, to which even the most prudent drivers may occasionally succumb, is generally not criminal.” The court quoted with approval the following: “If every departure from the civil norm is to be criminalized, regardless of the degree, we risk casting the net too widely and branding as criminals persons who are in reality not morally blameworthy.” Our top court, and the judge applying the law this past week, are correct. If we branded as criminals those drivers who fail to direct their full attention to the important driving task at hand we would be casting the
net too widely indeed. We have developed a driving culture where inattentive driving is the norm, not the exception. Apart from meeting the test of being a “marked” departure, inattentive driving is arguably not even a “mere” departure from the common standard of driving care. I urge those loved ones left behind in the tragic aftermath of inattentive driving to direct your disappointment not to the courts who apply the law we task them to apply, but instead to our driving culture, and join in working to change the driving attitudes that make up that culture. Let’s work together to eliminate inattentive driving to the point that such driving resulting in this kind of tragic and totally avoidable loss of life becomes a “marked departure” from normal driving behaviour. ast week, one of the most important institutions for our community and our economic future celebrated its 50th anniversary. It’s hard not to be grateful and supportive of an institution that boasts the mission statement: “Okanagan College transforms lives and communities.” The B.C. Jobs Plan is our government’s strategy to create long-term jobs that maintain and grow a strong economy. A strong economy is the best way for us to ensure that our children can find jobs in their hometowns and communities, and contribute in a meaningful way to our economy. That is a big goal, and it won’t happen without skills and technical training. Okanagan College is B.C.’s largest trades school outside the Lower Mainland, and offers programs like the Women’s Trades Training Initiative. The programs at Okanagan College prepare its students for today’s in-demand jobs. In addition to skills and technical training, Okanagan College continues to create opportunities for learners of all

were no predators hunting these crows. And when they took off, they de-flocked to different parts of the vineyard. Watching them, I cannot believe that crows do not have some form of telepathic communication. I’m sure several readers will immediately inform me about scientific research into crow communication. But whether crows do or do not communicate is not the point—the point is my inability to believe that their coherent behaviour results from chance or instinct. As I walked on, I pondered how many other matters are defined for us by our inability, or our unwillingness, to believe something. I read a book debunking climate change. The author was obviously intelligent and well read.
He knew all the studies about global warming and its predicted effects. And over and over, he dismissed those conclusions as “unthinkable,” “unimaginable,” “impossible,” “beyond credulity…” Once I identified this pattern, I could see that his objections to climate change had less to do with science than with his own inability to imagine those consequences. I get invitations to attend “intelligent design” presentations. From what I can see, pure creationists believe that a deity—specifically, the Christian God—created the world, as is, 6,000 years ago. Intelligent design adherents accept that life may have taken eons to evolve, but insist that “certain features of the universe and of living things are best explained by an intelligent cause, not an undirected pro-
cess such as natural selection.” That quote comes from Wikipedia, which goes on: “Certain biological features are too complex and improbable to be the result of evolutionary processes, and [therefore] these features are evidence of design.” In other words, they cannot believe that complex structures could evolve on their own. The similarities between an octopus’ eye and a human eye can’t be coincidence. They must have been planned, or at least tinkered with. I suppose the religious authorities, 20 centuries ago, could not believe that a Galilean peasant might embody the nature of God. And 600 years earlier, the Hebrew people could not believe that Yahweh would let his/her chosen people be exiled to Babylon. I wonder how many opportunities we have
missed, and may continue to miss, because we can’t, or won’t, allow our minds to consider

Older workers can project healthy energy as they go about their day

lder workers continue to face barriers in the work world where their most daunting competition for jobs and promotions is youth. Whether we like it or not, whether we believe it or not, whether or not it is legal (it isn’t), employers exercise ageism practices all the time. No it isn’t fair; neither is it in an employer’s best interest to do so. But it is, however, a reality. It is impossible to conceal aging and unfortunately some employers make negative assumptions about senior candidates’ stamina for work and even their potential liability due to health issues based on how “old” they look. These are unfound-

Laurie Mills ed fears but if you are an older worker don’t leave it to chance—find some ways to send a different message. One can argue that how we look has nothing at all to do with how energetic we are or how capable we are to perform our jobs. Therefore, it is not necessary to put extra ef-
fort into enhancing our physical appearance. I absolutely agree with the former point but adamantly challenge the latter one. There is more riding on how well you present yourself outwardly in the world of work than anyone wants to admit. We can’t stop ourselves from aging but that doesn’t mean we can’t look vibrant and even youthful while we do it. Let’s consider what kinds of things make us look older or tired, or even unhealthy. With limited space for today’s column, I’ll focus on the face. For example, how healthy is your skin tone? Do your eyes look clear and rested?
These are areas where our life years tend to show up most visibly. If you’re like most people you could use some extra help to neutralize the unflattering effects. My suggestions here are simple, inexpensive and non-invasive, applicable for both men and women. At any age, our eyes are windows to our personalities. Let’s forget about the wrinkles—everybody gets those—and consider the potential for projecting confidence and energy by drawing attention to our eyes. Using specialized products to help minimize the look of tired eyes is a great tactic, and so is choosing a modern
frame for your glasses, if you wear them. If you are prone to dark circles under your eyes these can convey fatigue, even if that is not the cause. Using a cosmetic concealer can do wonders to minimize this effect, and yes men can use it too. The brightening effect on your face will be noticeable. If puffiness under the eyes is your concern, there are gender specific products to counteract those as well. Needing eyeglasses used to be a sign of aging but people of all ages wear them now. Instead of trying to disguise the fact that you need glasses by wearing frameless lenses that you think no one will notice (we will), why not choose
a more modern style? Defined frames are in style so look for ones that flatter your face and wear them with confidence. I will conclude here with a final challenge to older workers—wear more colour. Nothing will brighten up your face more quickly. It’s such a powerful tactic. Everyone has a range of colours that look great on them. If you don’t know what those are, ask someone who does. Wearing flattering colours will get you noticed and not only will you look livelier, you will feel more energetic. While experience is an invaluable asset to bring to an employer, how you carry the years that come with that ex-
perience matters too. Small changes can make a big difference between looking old or worn out and looking older but still vibrant. Whether you are applying for a position with a new employer, or competing for a promotion with your current one, projecting an image of vitality and healthy energy can enhance your success. Local business dedicates a loonie a customer and a day of zips to charity Family-owned Oyama Zipline has super-sized their charitable giving, raising almost $5,000 for Parkinson’s disease in 2012. The money was raised through an event called SuperZip, held for anentire day in September. When a tour was purchased on that day, a full 100 per cent of the fees was donated to charity. SuperZip is an extension of the national SuperWalk event for Parkinson’s disease. With no organized walk in Oyama, Oyama Zipline offered two ways to get involved: Take a rip down the zipline with your money going to Parkinsons Canada Society’s SuperWalk or sponsor Team Oyama on www.parkinson.bc.ca by registering as a virtual zipliner. “Team Oyama Zipline raised an impressive $4,950 at SuperWalk 2012,” said Laura Darch of Parkinson

Rockets raffle for BrainTrust The Kelowna Rockets, Capri Insurance, M & M Performance and BrainTrust Canada have joined forces to raise as much as $10,000 to help support people in the Okanagan who have sustained a brain injury and provide education to youth to prevent injuries from occurring in the first place. The trio of local businesses are holding a charity raffle (BCLC Event Gaming License Class B #57481) where one Rockets fan will win a 90 cc Polaris Outlaw quad, donated by M & M Performance. Tickets are $10 and are available exclusively at Kelowna Rockets games. With only 500 available Capri Insurance stepped forward to match the amount raised to a maximum of $5,000 with the potential being $10,000 for BrainTrust Canada. “This is an excellent fit for us to be partnering with the Kelowna Rock-

What information is found on dog food labels?
There are several key elements that are required to be printed on pet food labels in the United States and Canada. These include the manufacturer name, the product name, the intended species, the net weight, ingredient statement, the guaranteed analysis, the feeding guidelines, and the nutritional purpose (life-stage) statement. Additional information that may be present on the label but is not required includes calorie content, a universal product code (UPC), a nutrition claim, and a freshness date. The most important information when comparing one dog food to another is the guaranteed analysis. The guaranteed analysis is expressed in terms of per cent maximums and minimums, and on the label each of these will be “as is” or “as fed”. “As fed” means as the food comes out of the bag or can. This is an important detail because we cannot really compare dog foods on an “as fed” basis. Instead we need to compare nutrient profiles on a “dry matter” basis, with all the water removed. Some pet food companies provide a dry matter analysis on their websites, but most do not, so this means doing a little math before making a product comparison.

First of all, you need to place a clear value on the enjoyment and satisfaction that you will derive from owning your own home. Home buyers should base their purchasing decision not only on the investment attributes of a house, but also on their personal circumstances like family situation and financial position. here is a strong sense that fall was in the air. As I puttered in my garden recently, I realized it was not so much the cooler, moister air, but the delightful chatter of dozens of songbirds that created this impression. They were busily filling up on seeds and likely bugs as well, as they fatten up for cooler weather and migration for some species. Sunflowers received the most attention, especially from goldfinches, chickadees and house finches. I haven’t planted sunflowers in my gardens for about six years. They always seed themselves. I leave them unless they’re going to crowd out something else or are in a pathway. They grow in dry, part shade but tend to be small and spindly. In an irrigated, sunny vegetable garden they become enormous, stoutstemmed plants with many huge flowers. This year I had many sunflowers self-seed in

Dry eye syndrome is a lack of sufficient lubrication in the eyes, resulting in a burning, scratchy feeling. Nausea a sign that qi-energy is flowing in the wrong direction
Some helpful tips on how U to develop a healthy lawn

ausea is a common ailment with many different causes, from stomach flu, morning sickness and medications to vertigo, motion sickness, migraines, surgery, cancer treatment and the foods we eat. Morning sickness is a type of nausea commonly experienced during the first trimester of pregnancy. It varies in severity and there is no clear cause, although it is thought to be the result of hormonal changes in the body. In western medicine, we can treat nausea at home with plenty of rest and sipping small amounts of fluids to stay hydrated, eventually moving to small amounts of bland, easily-digested foods.

Needle Notes Of course, if there is no real change over a long period of time, other, more serious, medical conditions should be considered. Acupuncture offers great relief for nausea and vomiting with little or no side-effects. There has been a great deal of research into the benefits of acupuncture for nausea caused by chemotherapy, radiation,
pregnancy, morning sickness, surgery and HIV, demonstrating its effectiveness for nausea. Nausea and vomiting are signs that the stomach qi-energy is flowing in the wrong direction. Normally, the action of the stomach is to move food downwards. However, sometimes the stomach energy will begin to flow upwards due to a disorder of the stomach, typically due to stomach vacuity, cold, heat, dampness, or food stagnation in the stomach. Depending on the type of pattern, there may be a variety of accompanying symptoms ranging from bloating and loss of appetite to headaches, dizziness, chest pain and acid reflux. Acupuncture focus-
es on harmonizing the stomach energy and promoting the proper flow of qi-energy so that the stomach is functioning properly again. We combine this with correcting any other presenting imbalances such as warming the stomach if there is cold, draining fire for stomach heat, and drying dampness. A series of treatments is typically necessary to resolve nausea or vomiting, although relief can be quite immediate. Indeed, as many studies have shown, acupuncture is in fact very effective for the relief of nausea, whatever the cause. n a recent column I wrote about how the installation process influences how a lawn performs over time. Without proper installation it is very difficult to maintain a healthy lawn, in particular because of poor drainage which never allows the root system of the turf grass to breath. A gradual buildup of thatch occurs as roots come to the surface for air then die because of exposure to drought. Contrary to most thinking, thatch is not a buildup of dead grass, but a thick layer of dead and living roots in which the turf grass is trying to grow. With diligent and time consuming management, a decent lawn can be achieved. However, this is obviously not the way to go. With proper installation, only minimal annual maintenance is required such as a spring cleanup with a power rake followed by a coring. Top dressing in spring and fall with some Nature’s Gold plus a feeding or two through the season with a good quality slow release turf fertilizer will keep you lawn in stellar condition. Even with a professional installation adhering to the B.C. Landscaping and Nursery Association standards, issues unrelated to compaction can occur at times.

There are a few insect problems which can occur in the Okanagan although it is on rare occasions. Perhaps the most common is lawn moth or sod web worm. The larvae of this insect chews at the base of the grass blades just above the crown leaving large irregular brown patches in the lawn. It is easy to tell if the problem is lawn moths because the dead grass pulls off easily in handfuls. If this problem occurs, it is necessary to have a professional lawn care service come and deal with it since there is nothing on the retail shelves for homeowners to use. Weeds can be a concern in turf grass but if managed on a regular basis and not get out of hand the problem can be minimized. Remember one dandelion going to seed will result in many hundreds of dandelions in the future; the same with clover, plantain, purslane
and other seedy annual and perennial weeds. Again, if the weeds have taken over your turf then it is time to call in a professional to manage the problem. A common occurrence for me is to be called in during the summer months to figure out why a lawn is browning out in places only to discover it is just poor watering practices. Most of the time it is when there is an automatic sprinkler system involved and the homeowner has the confidence it is working properly whereas after doing a simple test we find out it is the contrary. The simple test is to place pie plates or saucers around key areas of the lawn and turn on the sprinklers for 10 minutes. Measure the accumulation of water in each saucer and you will be amazed at the difference even though it looks as if the sprinklers are reaching all the areas of your lawn equally. BATES: ETHEL LILLIE IRENE Passed away peacefully in the Kelowna General Hospital on September 27th, 2013 at the age of 85 years. Ethel is survived by her children Rod (Denyse) Hughes, Jim (Debbie) Hughes, Linda (Terry) Doyle; eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Ethel was predeceased by her husband Harvey, son Larry Hughes and grandson James Hughes. A Celebration of Ethel’s Life will be held at the Winfield Seniors Centre, 9832 Bottom Wood Lake Road, Winfield on Thursday, October 3rd, 2013 at 1:00 PM. In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation in memory of Ethel. CROSS, JOAN MARION Joan Marion Cross, 70, of Kelowna BC went to be with the angels on September 19th 2013 at home with her family by her side, after a very courageous battle with Cancer. She was predeceased by her Mother and Father Jack and Millie Portman, her sister Marg Haller and Mother in Law Connie Cross. Joan is loved and missed by her husband Basil Cross, Children Corrinne Cross (Chris Franson and Children) of Lake Country, Kevin Cross (Marie Byers and Children) of Salmon Arm. Brother and Sister in Law Woody & Kathie Cross, Grandchildren Tyler Whitehead, Shelbi, Rylee, Ben, Gillian Cross, uncle Bill Portman of Kamloops. Joan also leaves special friend Colleen Friesen and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends. Joan was born in Kelowna BC October 2 1942, and grew up in Copper Mountain and Kamloops where she met and married her loving, caring husband Basil. Basil and Joan moved to Hudson’s Hope to work and start their family. In 1972 the family moved to Sicamous BC where Joan was involved in Curling, Bowling, Gymnastics, school functions, minor Baseball. In 1988 Joan and Basil moved to North Vancouver, in 1999 moved to Vernon, and 2008 to Lake Country (Kelowna) while wintering in Yuma AZ. Many Thanks to the Doctors, Nurses and staff of Palliative Care A Celebration of Life will be on October 5th 2013 at 1:00pm at the Lakers Clubhouse at 7000 Cummins Road, Vernon BC.
