Baby Boomers pose retirement challenge By TamaRa CunnIngham ThE NEwS BULLETiN
With a wave of baby boomers set to retire, Nanaimo officials are facing big questions about the future of staffing at city hall. B.C.’s baby boomers are set to exit the workforce over the next five years, contributing to an estimated shortfall of 160,000 workers by 2015. According to labour experts, the shift will create big challenges for organizations, from paying the costs of retirement to recruiting new employees. The City of Nanaimo isn’t immune. Thirty per cent of the city’s employees will be eligible to retire without pension penalties within the next half-decade, including half of the senior management team. In the parks, recreation and culture department alone, four staff members are anticipated to announce their exits within the next 18 months, preceded by the departure of the city’s senior manager of parks and civic facilities this fall. The wave of retirements has Nanaimo’s top city officials mulling next steps, including potential restructuring, succession planning and recruitment strategies. Terry Hartley, the city’s director of human resources and organizational planning, said there could be an opportunity to look at ways to do things better at city hall and reduce costs by leaving some positions vacant. But city officials will also have to consider how to retain employees in the wake of provincial labour shortages and deal with the retirement of long-term employees, who could take their knowledge and history of the organization with them. “[The Conference Board of Canada estimates] B.C. will have a labour shortage by 2015 of 160,000 skilled workers, so we know this is an issue,” said Hartley, adding she anticipates difficulties ahead. “What we do now is prepare for the retirements we know are going to happen.” Labour experts say baby boomers are larger than any other generation behind them, lending to potentially significant employment crunch issues for organizations stacked with the demographic. u See ‘PLANNING’ /4

Grant targets depot upgrades By Karl yu The News BulleTiN
trade publications and other periodicals, especially for efforts to clean out garbage left in the area by other users, and for keeping harvest volumes small and leaving older fir and cedar trees standing. “There’s lots of nice trails through there,” John said. Lanztville Mayor Jack de Jong said he was pleased to hear the brothers won the award. “I think it’s just fantastic to see these small businessmen succeed,” de Jong said. “I think that’s what it’s all about and if the government can see its way clear to give out some more small areas like that, I think it would be good for the province.” “John and David have maintained a hands-on approach and have learned how to get the most from their woodlot,” said Michelle Stillwell, Parksville-Qualicum MLA, in a press release. “Their leadership and hard work is setting an example for other woodlot operators across the province while making a real impact on the local economy and environment.”
The Gabriola Island Recycling Organization is one step closer to seeing funding for facility upgrades. At the Regional District of Nanaimo’s board meeting last month, directors voted to make a recommendation to the Union of B.C. Municipalities to release $75,000 in gas tax transfer funding to the non-profit recycling organization under the regionally significant project funding program. Approval is still needed from the Union of B.C. Municipalities’ executive before the money is released but it would help the organization expand its services and improve its drop-off facilities for resellable items, as donations are currently exposed to the elements. “We need to buy some infrastructure, storage tanks, storage bins etc. and fundamentally, we have a problem in our re-store area, where donations that are received are stored in basically farm tents, temporary shelters, and they’re subjected to the environment,” said Richard Nolan, president of the Gabriola Island Recycling Organization. “From our perspective, it’s kind of a shame that when someone donates something, that it’s possible that it will be damaged.” The money would only cover part of the upgrades, with the recycling organization paying for the rest. Nolan said the organization will soldier on if approval is not given. “It’s certainly not going to stop our project – we’re just going to have to do more fundraising ourselves,” Nolan said. “Everything that’s recycled at our centre means less vehicle traffic travelling across the [Nanaimo harbour] over to the RDN depot.” Gabriola Island regional district director Howard Houle said the plan has been in the works for more than a year and is pleased to see the organization closer to getting the money, which he says it rarely asks for. “It’s been going since 1991 and other than several years back, they received $15,000 from the RDN for a truck, other than that, they’ve received no money since 1992 from any level of government,” Houle said. “They’ve done very well just on their common business practices.” Houle said a decision about the money is expected to be reached at the next meeting of the Union of B.C. Municipalities’ executive.

information sought on missing man Nanaimo RCMP are hoping the public might be able to help them locate a man who hasn’t been seen by his family in months. Cristian Kaiser, 23, of Nanaimo, has been out of contact with family members since last November. “His family needs to hear that he is OK and that he has simply decided to move on with his life,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, in a press release. Kaiser is 5-foot-4, 120 pounds and has dark hair and brown eyes. He doesn’t own a car and has limited financial means, and does not use social media websites. He doesn’t have any medical issues, say RCMP, and was in good health when last seen. Police said there is nothing to indicate foul play was involved in his disappearance. Anyone with information about Kaiser is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www. crimestoppers.ca.

Two loggers from Nanaimo have received recognition and a reward for sound forestry practices. John Gregson, licence holder of Woodlot 1475 in Lantzville, and his brother Dave have been presented with the $2,500 Coast Area award for sound forestry and environmental practices and exceptional community stewardship by Steve Thomson, minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources, as part of the 2013 Woodlot Management Awards. The annual awards are paid for by the province and jointly administered with the Federation of B.C. Woodlot Associations. The B.C. woodlot licence program is is a way of giving British Columbians the opportunity to manage small-scale forestry operations on Crown land.
The Gregsons, who operate Nanaimo-based Copcan Contracting, a division of Gregson Holdings, have conducted logging operations at Woodlot 1475, a 250-hectare parcel of land with second-growth timber above Lantzville, since the licence was awarded in 2009. One of the Gregsons’ goals for harvesting from the land is to maintain the space as a recreational area for Lantzville residents and sustainable logging practices. “It was a bit controversial when we first got [the licence],” John said. “We worked with the neighbours over the years and things are going good that way. We’ve enhanced fish streams, cleaned a whole bunch of fish streams, kept all the trails intact on the woodlot because it’s for use for the public as well, and just doing sustainable logging – replant right away.” John said the woodlot is operated by he and his brother separately from other Gregson Holdings operations. The Gregsons’ work has been also noted in logging

Human Resources Management Association. “This great, high number of people in one age bracket are all moving into supervisor levels and later into management and then senior management – all [at] the same age and leaving at the same time,” Codrington said. “[It c re a t e s ] m a s s i v e problems for an organization, starting with the costs of retirement ... then you have the organizational implications of a lot of people with a lot of knowledge leaving at about the same time.” On the flip side, it can also create opportunity for organizations to change direction and reduce positions to save on salary costs, he said. ahead to retirements, mapping out the numbers of people expected to depart and identifying key replacements to promote from within. They are also looking at graduated exits to help capture the knowledge of longtime employees. “Instead of [someone turning] 65 and leaving ... they start working four days a week, then three days a week ... phasing themselves out while [their] replacement is starting to increase their time,” he said. “They are [job] shadowing ... [and] the organization doesn’t incur extra costs.” L o o m i n g re t i re ments have been on the minds of bureaucrats for at least the last five years and city officials are working on strategies, according to Hartley. The economic downturn helped stall a potential exodus, but she said officials always knew when the economy started to boom again they had to be ready for departure announcements. With a provincial labour shortage, city officials need to start looking at selling the value of working for local government and examining nonmonetary benefits to retain talented workers, Hartley said. Beginning this fall, Nanaimo city manager Ted Swabey has also announced plans to talk to city council about its vision for city staffing and budget discussions next month are expected to address retirements and potential cuts by attrition in parks, recreation and culture. The position filled by the senior manager of parks, for example, is not expected to be filled until city council reviews the department. “For us it might be a little premature [to talk about restructuring],” said Nanaimo Mayor John Ruttan. “We are aware of the problem, but we are not aware of the solution. It’s something for us to talk about.” news@nanaimobulletin.com

A new $18,000 economic survey will test the strength of Nanaimo’s technology sector. The Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation and Innovation Island are partnering on a new technology survey that will peg down the scope of the sector, the jobs it generates and economic spinoffs. The initiative is part of the economic corporation’s effort to collect benchmark information on different sectors in the Harbour City so it can promote growth. It recently collected information on the economic benefits of arts and culture. The results of the estimated $19,000 survey is expected this October. “[The survey is] part of ... making sure we have good baseline information around the technology sector, so we can see where their needs are and how we can help them grow,” said Sasha Angus, CEO of the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation. “When we get the data back I think [we are going] to be surprised about the amount of tech activity and knowledge-based jobs there are in the community.” The study is also anticipated to look at where the technology sector is sending its products and services. Angus said the information will help the corporation figure out where and how it should i n v e s t re s o u rc e s to help local businesses. The data will be shared with Innovation Island, which also supports growth among technology companies. Nordicity, a Canadian company, will be conducting the survey. “This is not something we are going to do every year. It’s information that hasn’t been collected in a long time, some has never been collected,” Angus said. “We want to set a benchmark and then in the future see if our effects have been successful in growing the sectors.”

Activist proud to stand up for beliefs

JEaN McLarEN shares knowledge with protesters.
By Tamara Cunningham The News BulleTiN

nder the looming threat of nuclear war, Jean McLaren decided it was time to take a stand. In 1949, Russia and America were locked in a frigid standoff and nuclear destruction was a growing concern for Canadians. Instead of wringing her hands about what could happen, McLaren said she decided to take action. She joined the ranks of the Communist Party – one of the few organizations she felt was doing anything about world peace – and worked as a door-to-door canvasser against nuclear weapons. On $1.49 day at Woodward’s department store in Vancouver, she’d stand at the building corner and call out for the crowds of bargain hunters to sign petitions for peace. It wasn’t an easy job, she recalls. “People would actually spit on me and tell me to go back to Russia. I’d never even been there,” said McLaren. “They really did say horrible things and you know [banning the bombs] is something we won in that time. We didn’t think we had [because] there are nuclear weapons still, but no one has dropped a bomb since [Hiroshima and Nagasaki].” Since the beginning of McLaren’s protest efforts, she has been arrested nine times and held at gunpoint – but nothing has deterred her from the causes she believes in. McLaren said she takes pride in standing up against injustices and isn’t afraid if it gets her into a little trouble along the way. She participated

in Canada’s largest nonviolent blockade at Clayoquot Sound two decades ago and is a pioneer of Gabriola’s Raging Grannies. She has accumulated a few tricks over the years on techniques for peaceful rallies and now,
as the Gabriola resident sees activism make a comeback, she’s sharing those tips with fledgling protesters. McLaren recently spoke to a dozen people interested in marching against Nanaimo’s Linley Valley development – an area advocates feel should be preserved as a nature park. “I love [non-violence training],” McLaren said. “I teach them not to be afraid … that everyone has a job to do, whether it’s risking arrest or not … [and that] if you love something, stand up for it.” McLaren moved to Vancouver Island in 1951, where she was eventually expelled from the Com-
munist Party for questioning the Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia. She continued to find avenues to protest including the Congress of Canadian Women, Nanoose Conversion Campaign and Clayoquot Sound. In 1992, McLaren was arrested for refusing to get off a logging road where she was teaching a peaceful protest workshop. It would be a full year before she made her way back to Clayoquot Sound and this time she was banned from going within 200 metres of any logging road in the province. She spent her time at the “black hole” – a clear cut area near Kennedy Lake where protesters set up a camp. There, she would listen to the experiences of blockaders and counsel them on the best ways to stand up for their beliefs. “Clayoquot Sound – it changed my life a lot,” McLaren said. “It just got me to understand how to act and not to act and how it works if you do not get angry.” Twenty years after Clayoquot Sound, the 86-year-old is anything but retired. If she isn’t protesting, she’s teaching people how to take a stand. There seems to be a resurgence in activism, says McLaren, who has watched with interest the Occupy and Idle No More movements. In Nanaimo people threatened civil disobedience to protect the Colliery dams and people are considering peaceful protests to push back against a Linley Valley development. McLaren said people seem to want change. Her advice? “Stand up for what you believe in, but do not get too angry,” McLaren said. “If you get angry, then [those on the other side] get angry and it’s hard to understand each other.” news@nanaimobulletin.com

Proposed development in Cedar attracts high interest from residents By Karl yu The News BulleTiN
Consultation is taking place for an environmentally sustainable neighbourhood development near Hemer Park in the Cedar area. Planning for Kirkstone Place began in 2006 and it will span 3.64 hectares, support 33 homes in single-family and attached dwellings, and will feature a number of environmental features, which could include rainwater harvesting, heat recovery ventilation, permaculture-based community gardens, solar energy and solar hot water. Emanuel Hajek, a local ownership representative, said developers will aim for Built Green environmental certification and will try to incorporate as many “green” principles as they can. “We’re trying to create something that has people that are likeminded – people that are conscious of water use, conscious of wanting to grow their own food ... if you’re going to live a sustainable lifestyle, that people have to recognize that,” Hajek said. A public forum was held Thursday to determine what the community would like to see Kirkstone Place look like, although Hajek said the ownership group is leaning toward ready-made units, where owners “don’t have to worry about further land improvements.” Alec McPherson, the Regional District of Nanaimo director for the Cedar area, said people came from as far as Cobble Hill to
attend Thursday’s forum and the general consensus, as he sees it, is people want to see Kirkstone Place progress. “Everybody that I see just wants to get on with this – they’re concerned about the length of time it’s already taken and they don’t want to lose this,” he said. “They want to move this thing forward, have it become a reality because I think we all know, particularly as elected officials, that (a sustainable community) is the future ... I haven’t heard anybody who has panned the idea in any way, shape or form.” McPherson said external stakeholders, such as Minister of Environment Mary Polak and Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone, have had a chance to comment on the project and he is hopeful the project can start sometime in 2014. “The big thing is, it has to go through a zoning amendment, so those typically take up to six months ... I would hope that sometime in the spring we’re at a point where the proponents are confident that they’ve got people that want this type of development, that they’ll actually start putting their money down and that we’ll be through all the regulatory process,” he said. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

B.C.’s future pinned to LNG There is a perplexing situation surrounding the Liberals hinging the economic future of the province on liquefied natural gas to the tune of more than $400 billion in revenue. The importance of natural gas to the Liberal government first made light during the election campaign, when the Liberals promised to clear the provincial debt and establish a Prosperity Fund with natural gas royalties and revenues. Since winning the election, the Liberals have continued to rest much of the province’s future economic success on the natural gas industry. In fact, Premier Christy Clark is heading out on tour, to essentially promote the natural gas industry in B.C. With this kind of talk, is the province counting its chickens before they’ve hatched? The problem is the natural gas industry in British Columbia is in its infancy. Of the handful of proposed liquefied natural gas plants alluded to in the Prosperity Fund calculations, three have received export permits, although clients have yet to be secured, and only two have passed environmental reviews. Then there are the pipelines needed to get the natural gas to the LNG plants, most of which have not passed through the environmental assessment stage. But Clark is out there, telling the world B.C.’s natural gas industry will be providing clean energy to the rest of Canada and the world. Environmental groups dispute the “clean” part of the equation, and are prepared to take on the provincial government if B.C.’s pristine lakes and rivers are in any danger of degredation from the emerging industry. Hinging the province’s future on what can best be called unhatched chickens is not very prudent. Unless, of course, Clark knows something about the regulatory process she isn’t sharing right now.

Also persuasive is the statement by an English milk expert that, “cheese is rarely involved in outbreaks of food poisoning,” and that “the most frequent causative factor in cheese-related outbreaks is post-production contamination” – i.e. after pasteurizing. Pollan tells how a California maker of cheese from an old French recipe, threatened with closure by the food police, set up a demonstration using two batches of cheese, one in her old wooden barrel and one in a stainless steel vat. She inoculated both with E. coli. The cheese made in stainless steel had high levels of the bacteria. The cheese from the wooden barrel had almost none. There were good bacteria encouraged by the traditional wood but none to help the cheese made in the sterile container. There is magic in traditional methods. Verdict is in on climate change To the Editor,
The jury is not out on climate change. The verdict is in. The gold standard for scientific validity is widely peer-reviewed research. Thousands of credentialed climate scientists from 195 countries assess climate change. The contrarian deniers produce no such research. They are but a few talking heads in the pocket of big business. Today’s greenhouse gas concentra-
tions are the highest in the last 80,000 years, 90 per cent produced since the Industrial Revolution with its new machine manufacturing, new chemical and iron production processes. Since then, energy production has been the fundamental issue that has caused and continues to cause our woes. Stanford’s Dr. Mark Jacobson has showed convincingly that right today, we have the technology and
expertise to 100 per cent solve our world energy problems relating to electricity, transportation, industry, and heating/cooling by 2030. Green, sustainable, solar and wind production alone could do it. Why do we not? Lack of political will driven by worldwide mega industrial-financialpolitical forces have too much capital committed to the old way.

So when the staff and council planning the budget talk about increases, two, three or even four per cent does not seem like much but over 10 years, two per cent each year becomes a 21.9-per cent increase, three per cent

Re: Chemtrails staining our sky, Letters, Sept. 24. Most days you cannot see for more than a kilometre without seeing a haze of white dust in front of everything, naturally I wanted to know where this was coming from. I watch jets take off from the airport and climb to their desired altitude leaving no visible contrails/chemtrails; I then watch other planes flying over at all different altitudes leaving trails of white dust that then settle to ground level and create a white haze of dust in front of everything. I researched this online and found a news report that states this dust is aluminum and barium. After doing research into the long-term effects of exposure to this, I came

City’s water woes a serious issue To the Editor,
I fail to understand our city council and mayor. Water woes by 2020? There are water woes now. We do not own our watershed. We have no written agreement to allow us access to our watershed. Why to both statements?
The Cassidy aquifer is already under threat from an expanded airport runway system, it also feeds the Nanaimo River and many wells in the Cedar area, and we are hearing that Ladysmith is also looking at the Cassidy aquifer for a

Autumn is officially here and with the start of the new season comes a rejuvenated and refreshed commitment to create a better community through better business. Like many businesses, this past summer season was one full of considerable activity. A specifically memorable moment recently was the celebration of the final mortgage payment for the chamber. Thanks to the vision and leadership of previous board of directors, executive directors, and CEOs, the Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce paid off its mortgage for its headquarters on Bowen Road. The beautiful facility was built 10 years ago and is now fully paid for. It truly is a testament to the commitment, dedication and fiduciary responsibility that the entire organization has adhered to for decades. And it continues to be a hub for present and future businesses and entrepreneurs to rely on for networking, advocacy and support. In fact, networking, advocacy and business support are our three main pillars that are members and the community-at-large look to us for. With more than 750 members, the Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce is one of the largest
and most respected organizations of its kind in British Columbia. The board of directors and our staff take this responsibility seriously and believe it is up to each and every one of us to make our community the best place it can be. Through the Successful Cities Initiative and the Inspire Nanaimo program, the chamber of commerce has been a leading voice to encourage the development of a healthier and economically and socially prosperous Nanaimo. These important activities and initiatives require your support so I encourage you to take part in our advocacy efforts. The chamber welcomed dozens of new members during the summer and our growth, like that of Nanaimo, is poised to continue. Whether you are a new or mature business, or you want to connect with a broad cross section of people who love working and living in Nanaimo, I personally invite you to attend any of our highly successful networking opportunities such as our popular luncheons, business after business or business before business events. Become involved in Nanaimo as much, and as best you can. And wherever it is that your business takes you, may it be profitable.

Harbour Air flies landbased craft Harbour Air announced the launch of its first land-based aircraft last month. Tantalus Air is a new line of business for the Harbour Air Group and it will offer private charter flights in a Pilatus PC-12. The PC-12 is a single-engine turboprop aircraft with seating for up to eight passengers. The PC-12 is able to take-off and land on relatively short airstrips, which allows for travel to more remote destinations. The aircraft can also land on gravel and turf airstrips, further expanding its reach. “Charter flights have always been a part of our business, but now with the Pilatus, we’re able to offer a land-based option at a cost comparable to that of our seaplanes, which is considerably less than that of a private jet,” says Greg McDougall, CEO of Harbour Air, in a press release. The plane will be based at the Vancouver International Airport, but flying anywhere and everywhere it’s chartered to fly in the Pacific Northwest. Harbour Air was founded in B.C. in 1982 and today has more than 50 aircraft. The Harbour Air Group, consisting of Harbour Air Seaplanes, Westcoast Air, Whistler Air, and now Tantalus Air is one of the largest seaplane companies in the world. Artist lands underwear deal I SIgNATURE chARAcTERS land on specialty underwear line sold in skate and snowboard stores.
By Melissa Fryer The News BulleTiN
You find the lurkers in the most unlikely of places. That’s probably how the creatures, creations from the mind of Nanaimo artist Russ Morland, got their moniker. Now the characters can be found on men’s underwear through My Pakage, specially designed for athletes in action sports, in skate and snowboard shops across North America. “It’s kind of funny,” Morland said. “I think that’s why I was so stoked to do it.” Morland operates out of his tattoo shop and art gallery Electric Umbrella in the Old City Quarter, where he creates original art pieces on skin and canvas. The lurkers, recognizable for their fantastical, animallike appearance with multiple eyes, horns and limbs, began to appear more than a decade ago when
Morland worked in a skate shop in the Old City not far from his current shop. The deal with My Pakage, a Canadianbased, specialty underwear line, came about while Morland was painting on site during a skateboard lifestyle tradeshow in Vancouver last year. He was introduced to company owners through a friend. “I just asked them,” he said. “I work on that whole ‘you don’t know until you ask’. “Sometimes, it works out.” Morland designed a square tile for the company, which put it into a repeating pattern to create rolls of soft, stretching and sweat-wicking fabric. The boxerbriefs are specially designed to support male anatomy while peforming tricks, stunts and other manoeuvres on skate and snowboards. But they’re also good for wearing day-to-day. “They’re the most comfortable under-

wear I’ve ever worn – and I’m not just saying that,” Morland said. It’s not the only fashion design that Morland is involved in – he’s currently in the early stages of a design process with a major shoe company. That project, he said, is still on the drawing board and

Leisure activities influence where people choose to live u From /1 “But if we are not also creating healthy spaces for people to participate in leisure with their families, they may choose [to live] in one community over another,” Sliskovic said. Sliskovic and Heeney are the first and second students to graduate from the new Masters of Arts in Sustainable Leisure at Vancouver Island University. According to Sliskovic, the program is so new there was really no employer looking for the degree on resumes, so the two decided to create their own company. It’s a chance for them to contribute to how communities are developed and get people more engaged, she said. The company launched in Nanaimo and Campbell River in June. “Sociable Scientists is a play on words because that’s what our background is – social science – but we are also pretty outgoing and want to engage with people and really put research and facilitation [around leisure] into the hands of the community,” Heeney said, adding they plan to help with land-use planning and sustainable development initiatives. The company’s first client is the Southern Gulf Islands Eco-

nomic Development Commission, which is looking to craft a vision for the South Gulf Islands Electoral Area. The sociable scientists are tasked with coming up with ways to overcome the lack of high speed Internet access so the area can attract more creative professionals. As word gets out about the company, Heeney said they hope to help other regions solve leisure dilemmas. “By looking at sustainability from a social perspective and leisure-based perspective we hope to be able to help empower people to … make new changes in order to continue to thrive and have a viable socio-economic environment to live in,” she said. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Symphony seeks young choir voices
I
CHANCE TO perform with Rick Scott.
Grade 5 students in Nanaimo school district can audition for a new choir set to sing with awardwinning children’s entertainer Rick Scott and the Vancouver Island Symphony at the Port Theatre. The symphony’s Outreach and Education program is launching a threepart integrated music education program in partnership with three school districts on the Island. Grade 4 students in all districts attend the symphony show, called My Symphony, with Scott and the Grade 5 choir. In addition, the symphony will be sending a musician to perform at each school prior to students attending My Symphony. “My Symphony will be introducing the musical instruments of the orchestra in a fun way to the students,” said Patricia Plumley, choir director. Auditions happen Oct. 10 and Oct. 12. To audition, students can sing alone or in groups, performing their favourite song or something like Happy Birthday or O Canada. Right after the auditions rehearsals begin once a week in preparation for extra outreach concerts. “These will help the new choir get performance experience ready for the big show in February,” said Plumley. “We’ll start singing, dig in, and see what unfolds.” For information or to book an audition, please call the symphony office at 250-754-0177 or visit www.vancouverislandsymphony.com.

The playoffs will go through Caledonia Park. T h e V. I . R a i d e r s defeated the Langley Rams 22-12 on Saturday in the Fraser Valley to all but clinch first place in the B.C. Football Conference. “We knew what was at stake,” said Ash Gayat, V.I. defensive end. “Coming out from the first whistle we knew they were going to give us their all and we knew we had to play better.” A downpour right before kickoff set the scene for a soggy game, and more adversity GREG SAKAKI/THE NEWS BULLETIN came right away as starting quarterback Langley Rams running back Nathan Lund just escapes a tackle attempt by V.I. Slow start sinks Clips The Nanaimo Clippers scored a spirited win on Friday, but seemed to sleep in a little bit on Sunday. The city’s B.C. Hockey League club split its weekend action at Frank Crane Arena, defeating the Salmon Arm Silverbacks 4-1 and then falling 4-2 to the Langley Rivermen. “It’s a game of inches out there and if you’re just a little bit behind where you normally are and you don’t have that jump and that sharpness, then it comes back to haunt you,” said Mike Vandekamp, Clippers coach. The Rivermen had the run of play for the first two periods, building up a 3-1 lead. Nanaimo had some strong shifts to start the third, but ran into penalty trouble that stalled any comeback hopes. Bo Brauer and Colton Dahlen scored Nanaimo’s goals and Jayson Argue suffered the loss, making 24 saves in relief of Liam McLeod. On Friday, Scott Prier, Sheldon Rempal, Mason Mitchell and Brauer scored and Argue made 30 stops for the win. GAME ON … The Clippers play Friday (Oct. 4) and Saturday at Frank Crane Arena, hosting the Cowichan Valley Capitals and West Kelowna Warriors, respectively. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. both nights.

Buccaneers win all month long The Nanaimo Buccaneers made it a September to remember. The city’s Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League team won again Thursday night, 4-1 over the Saanich Braves, to complete a perfect month with eight wins, zero losses. The Bucs took a period to get going on Thursday at the Nanaimo Ice Centre, but outscored the Braves 3-1 in the second and then iced the game with a late empty netter. Riel Gibson scored a hat trick, Nick White
had a goal and an assist and Garrett Dunlop had two helpers. Ryan Waldhaus stopped 20 of 21 shots for the win. “We’ll keep coming to work every day and see how we do,” said Brad Knight, the team’s coach. “We might as well enjoy it. It’s hockey, it’s supposed to be fun [and] right now it’s fun.” GAME ON … Next action for the Bucs (8-0) is Thursday (Oct. 3) when they host the Campbell River Storm (3-3-1-1) at 7:15 p.m. at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.

Vancouver Island University Mariners player Renan Rebelatto, left, ricochets a kick off of Thompson Rivers University WolfPack opponent Jacob Kaay during Sunday’s match at Merle Logan Field.
Top teams make it tough on M’s VIU’s soccer teams had a winless weekend against two powerhouses in the PacWest. The UBC-Okanagan Heat and the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack visited the Vancouver Island University Mariners on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, at Merle Logan Field. The Mariners men tied the Heat 1-1 on Saturday, then lost 2-1 to the WolfPack the next day. The M’s ladies were shut out 4-0 on Saturday and 2-0 on Sunday. The Mariners men were able to earn their draw against the first-placed Heat thanks to Farhad Abdulgani’s early goal. Sunday’s game against the WolfPack was a physical affair, as the teams carried over some of the chippy play from earlier this fall in Kamloops. The Pack scored twice in the first half and then an M’s player was red-carded, making the comeback more difficult. Playing a man down, VIU was able to carry most of the second-half play and Nick Moore scored on a

Barsby defence perfect again The John Barsby Bulldogs AA varsity team is full of perfectionists. The Bulldogs’ defence pitched its fourth shutout in five games on Friday, blanking the Sentinel Spartans 50-0 in West Vancouver. Parker Bowles led the D with eight tackles and a sack. Brandon Parker had 212 rushing yards and three majors. The Bulldogs play the Ballenas Whalers this Friday (Oct. 4) at 6 p.m. at Merle Logan Field. The NDSS Islanders beat Argyle 30-7 on the road Friday. ND hosts Windsor on Friday (Oct. 4) at 1:45 p.m.
penalty kick to make the endgame interesting. “As a coach you can’t ask for much more from a young team like ours,” said Bill Merriman, the team’s coach, in a press release. “I felt they dug very deep in the second half to try and get at least a single point. I think all our players learned from the game and this will only help us going forward.” GAME ON … The VIU Mariners men (3-3-2) and women (2-5-1) have home games Sunday (Oct. 6) against the Capilano Blues. The women’s match starts at noon with the men to follow at 2 p.m. Admission is free.
