Students put faith in learning This is the second of a series on nontraditional school choices in the Alberni Valley.

The school is named after a pope, but only half of the 94 students attending John Paul II Catholic school are actually Catholic. JPII principal Kathy Korman credits the all-inclusive and familial atmosphere of the Kindergarten to Grade 8 school for its popularity among non-Catholic parents. It also helps that class sizes are capped at 20 students. “They are very happy with the quality of education here,” Korman said about parents, noting that the students are very well-behaved. “We offer a faith based program that is very inclusive.” Teachers teach split grades which benefits both levels, Korman explained. She said students in a higher grade are able to get a review on something they had trouble with in the previous year and students in the lower grade can see what’s in store for them the following year. Like all independent schools, JPII must follow the education curriculum mandated by the provincial government, but being independent means they have more freedom when it
comes to religion. “Jesus is our role model,” Korman said, explaining the school can celebrate holidays like Christmas and Easter more freely than public schools. “We pray every day, we go to mass once a month and we have a chapel on site.” Korman noted that the kids participate in lots of community service activities such as collecting food for the food bank, clothes and toiletries for the needy. The school also participates in sponsoring a child in Bolivia. “Faith without works is empty,” Korman said, citing a scripture in the bible. “They learn the joy of giving and making the world a happier place.” The need to serve the community also extends to the parents and teachers. JPII recently installed a new playground, courtesy of the proceeds from two fun fairs the school hosted this year and last year in June. Parents and staff also volunteered their time installing the playground too. As a faith-based independent school, JPII gets half the provincial funding that a public school would get. To make up the difference, the school gets some of the money donated to the Catholic church through collections and the

school charges tuition which varies in price, depending on number of children enrolled and if the family is a parish supporter or not. Non-parish supporters pay $3,864 per year for one child while a parish supporters pay $3,330 for one child. A price break is given for additional children and financial support is available for those who need it. Half of the tuition is tax deductible. John Paul II Catholic
school opened its doors in September 2005 with 37 students at its Eighth Avenue location. The building had housed the Smith Memorial Catholic school from 1950 to 1976, when it closed due to funding, and had more than 200 students enrolled at its peak. Presently, JPII has a teaching staff of 11. Korman hopes to expand the school by offering Grade 9 one day as the school has the space for it. The school also
houses Mini Miracles Family Centre, which provides preschool and childcare service.
Port Alberni Christian School
Nestled within greenery up Cherry Creek Road and sharing its space with the First Baptist Church is Port Alberni Christian school, another independent school in the Alberni Valley. Opened in 1994, the elementary school has
moved around a few times and was once housed in the current John Paul II Catholic school, before finally settling at its current spot in 2010, near the Alberni Golf Club. The school uses the Montessori education system as a model in its approach in teaching, intertwined with Christianity, explained principal Mary Walker. Students pray two to three times a day and playtime is encouraged. “Children do learn a lot when they play,” Walker said. “Play is not a useless act.” Walker explained one instance where the Kindergarten children made up a restaurant with menus, with the older kids helping out as the young ones had not grasped all involved in running a restaurant. The school has 31 students and teaches Kindergarten to Grade 8 in two multigraded classrooms with two teachers and an education assistant. The school is interdenominational and has students enrolled representing six different churches. There is also a small number of families who don’t attend church, but choose to enrol their children anyways. “As long as they are willing to listen to the bible and pray, then they are welcomed,” Walker said, explaining the school’s atmosphere
and small class size is what attracts the nonchurch goers. “We train our children to be changers of the world and to show their love of God.” Walker is a former public school teacher and has been with the Christian school for 17 years. She was raised Catholic and switched to the Christian school because she wanted to work in an environment where she can freely express her faith. “I taught in the public school and they do a good job,” Walker said. “There was a time when we could pray and read the bible in public schools but that has changed. Being here, I can fully express my faith every day.” The Christian school is a group one school—just like JPII Catholic School—meaning it must follow the province mandated education curriculum but the school only receives 50 per cent of the funding that a public school gets. Fundraising, tuition and parents volunteering their time helps keep the school afloat. Tuition for a family is $250 a month each for the first two children. A discount is offered for the third child and then it’s free for the rest if a family has more kids. Financial support is available.

n emergency resolution demanding the province renew the Martin Mars water bomber contract was passed at the Union of British Columbia Municipality conference on Thursday. The last-minute resolution was introduced after the City of Port Alberni and the AlberniClayoquot Regional District had an emergency meeting with Ministry of Forests, Land and Natural Resource Operations officials/ Councillors lobbied them to continue using the 60-yearold plus aircraft, nicknamed Hawaii Mars, which is the
◆ UBCM largest water bomber in the world. “They got knowledge from us that the water bomber is an iconic symbol in the Alberni Valley, a source of pride and is a popular tourist attraction,” said Mayor John Douglas, about the meeting. “And of course, it is a valued resource in fighting forest fires.” Douglas said the meeting was positive and while ministry officials listened, no promises were made. As such, a resolution was drafted and almost unanimously approved by UBCM members, made up of civic politicians from throughout the province. “This demonstrates to the Ministry of
Forests and the provincial government how much support the Mars water bomber has in the province,” Douglas said, explaining Coun. Rob Cole presented the motion to the UBCM and that no one spoke against it. In the spring, the Ministry of Forests, Land and Natural Resource Operations announced that this would be the last year the province would use the Mars water bomber, citing its age and that it is the last aircraft of its kind in operation. Wayne Coulson, owner of the Coulson Group, which owns the water bomber, was unable to convince the province to change their mind. Coulson also owns a second Mars water

Mayor hopes to lure Seaspan to Alberni’s port Port Alberni city council is hoping to lure Seaspan into contracting some of their shipbuilding work to Port Alberni, says Mayor John Douglas. Seaspan is one of the largest marine related business in the world, in involved with barging container ships, ferries and ship building. The company has a $8 billion ship building contract with the Department of Defence, of which Douglas is hoping to get a slice. Seaspan chief executive officer Jonathan Whitworth was at the Union of British Columbia Municipality conference last week, where Douglas met with him. “We updated him what we are doing,” Douglas said, He further explained that he met with Whitworth two years ago and explained the city’s plans to develop a container transshipping facility in Port Alberni. “It’s quite feasible that we might get some work parcelled out to Port Alberni.” Douglas posted on his Facebook site that Port Alberni Port Authority CEO Zoran Knezevic and Coun. Dan Washington also attended the meeting with Whitworth. Douglas also noted in his post that Knezevic was part of a 20-minute “one-issue meeting” with council members and four provincial ministers— deputy premier and Ministery of Natural Gas Development Rich Coleman, Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Development Shirley Bond, Minister of International Trade Teresa Watt and Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone.

Jennifer Faerber knows firsthand the impact cancer can have on a child’s life. Faerber, who came to Canada from Australia three years ago to continue her radio career, battled non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma as a kid. She also had the opportunity to attend a camp in Australia similar to B.C.’s Camp Goodtimes, a summer camp for children who have gone through cancer. Faerber, one of four media riders on this year’s Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock team, says going from reporting on the Tour to being a part of the event has been a deeply rewarding experience. “When I first moved to Vancouver Island, Tour de Rock was one of the first stories I had to cover,” said Faerber, news director of Vista Radio’s Coast group of stations, based in Courtenay. “When you work in broadcasting, you talk a lot, but you don’t talk about yourself. I’ve had friends that didn’t really know what I went through.” Faerber said one of her motivating factors as a rider is to tell people “what it’s like when you are that kid with cancer.” She noted how grateful she is to

I actually felt really comfortable there; I was one of those kids,” While the other three media riders on this year’s 21-person team haven’t experienced cancer the same way Faerber has, they all have their reasons to ride. Black Press media rider Arnold Lim, a father of two, says he thinks about his own kids whenever he gets on the bike. “When we went to Camp Goodtimes I met kids whose stories you don’t know completely, but you know they’ve been dealt some pretty bad cards. But they don’t look any different than my own kids,” he said. “They’re the same age as my kids, but they’ve gone through something that kids their age shouldn’t have to go through.” Lim, who prior to training hadn’t been on a bike for years, says he’s
motivated by those kids whenever he feels the aches and pains of cycling. “There isn’t a day that goes by where my thighs aren’t throbbing or my feet are hurting, but that’s nothing compared to the chemotherapy and the spinal taps that some kids have to go through,” Lim said. “I’m not in any position to complain.” CTV News Vancouver Island reporter and anchor Joe Perkins is grateful no children in his family have been affected by cancer, but he keeps in mind a close uncle who died from lung cancer. “He never smoked a day in his life,” Perkins said. He draws his motivation from his junior rider, Luke Savage, a 17-yearold Grade 12 student at Belmont secondary. “Luke had three jobs this summer, worked seven days a week, knows he wants to be an electrician, he’s finishing up his Grade 12 year, and he’s in remission. … For me, that’s pretty inspiring.”
The close-knit camaraderie amongst this year’s riders and Tour de Rock team also took Perkins by surprise. “I knew it would be special, I didn’t think it would be this special,” he said. “And that’s me saying this before we’ve even left. … I can’t wait to see the Island.” Jillian van der Geest, an on-air host with KOOL FM, has witnessed the impact cancer has on a family whose child is battling the disease. Caleb, the son of a family friend, was diagnosed with a brain tumour at eight years old, and died two years later. “I spent a lot of time with his family, from diagnosis to his death, and it’s heart-wrenching and inspiring to watch a family go through that. All they wanted to do was talk about it and have good times with him,” van der Geest said. “It was a unique experience for me to be there and help the family when I could, but ultimately how can you help with something like that? For me, Tour de Rock – this is me trying to help.”

Cancelled sitting tough questions Regulator’s reading on smart meters Out front of the big stone building in Victoria’s Inner Harbour is where people watch Symphony Splash, where tourists snap pics, where the annual marathon has its finish line and where concerts are held on Canada Day. The grounds of the legislature are busy, except as a place of work for our 85 elected provincial representatives. With another fall sitting cancelled, MLAs will have sat in the chamber for 36 days this year. It’s good work if you can get it. Cancelling legislative sessions has become the norm for the B.C. Liberals. House leader Mike de Jong has announced the cancellation of the fall sitting in 2013, 2012, 2008 and 2006. Each time, the NDP opposition registered its outrage with the media, declaring the cancellation an abdication of democracy and accusing the Liberals of trying to avoid tough issues and questions. Premier Christy Clark points out the legislature sat in the summer after the spring election and that the government will get more work done not being in session. The government apparently can’t walk and chew gum at the same time. The province is facing big questions about the direction of its energy policy, the shrinking provincial budget surplus), increasing B.C. Hydro rates and our role as a Pacific Rim economy. No matter your political stripe, B.C. residents should be skeptical of the claim the government has no pressing legislation or issues to discuss through the fall. Our local government councillors and mayors don’t get the luxury of cancelling public meetings. The outrage would be heard far and wide if Victoria city council decided to avoid its chamber to avoid tough questions or “to get more work done.” Other than promoting liquefied natural gas as a future cash cow, the Liberals’ priorities and agenda for the next four years remain unclear. – Black Press

ictoria — Despite efforts to keep the smart meter “controversy” alive by repeating imaginary health claims, the end is near. Energy Minister Bill Bennett has made what sounds like a final offer to holdouts. You want to keep your old mechanical meter, fill your boots. It’ll cost you an extra $35 a month, starting in December. If you insist on a “radio off ” wireless meter, there will be a setup fee of $100 and a monthly fee of $20 to have someone collect the readings. These charges are to be reviewed by the B.C. Utilities Commission, the independent panel that smart meter opponents want to review BC Hydro’s whole smart grid project. As it happens, the BCUC recently did just that for an application by FortisBC
to install wireless meters for its Okanagan and Kootenay customers. The meters were approved, and the findings are instructive. The BCUC report notes that it received “many” complaints about smart meter signals being added to existing radio frequency (RF) sources. Some used familiar scare rhetoric about “toxic microwave radiation” that’s promoted by people trying to make money by exploiting fear. One of the experts retained by FortisBC was Dr. Yakov Shkolnikov, an electrical engineer with advanced degrees from Princeton and Cornell Universities. His testimony was not challenged by any of the lineup of opponents. A sample of his findings illustrates the absurdity of this whole discussion. Shkolnikov calculated that a cell phone in use generates radio signals
that reach 10 per cent of the international safety code limit. A microwave oven generates 2.3 per cent of the safe limit. A cordless phone: 1.25 per cent. A wi-fi signal: 0.0045 per cent. A bank of smart meters, not separated by a wall, registers 0.0019 per cent. The natural background RF level is 0.013 per cent. Note the decimal place. The level in the middle of a wilderness is more than 10 times that received from a bank of meters. BCUC staff added, for comparison, the radio signal level emitted by a human body. It’s 0.018 per cent. What this means is your spouse snoring beside you is a stronger source of RF than a whole wall of smart meters. Experts put up by opponents didn’t fare so well. One was Jerry Flynn, a retired Canadian Forces officer from Kelowna who travels around taking readings,

talking to elderly people about alleged hazards of meters, and making claims to the media about what he has called the single biggest threat to human health today. The BCUC found his military experience not “relevant,” and his evidence frequently “incorrect, exaggerated and/or unsubstantiated.” Then there was Curtis Bennett, who described himself as “chief science officer” for a company called Thermoguy. He spoke on behalf of West Kootenay Concerned Citizens. In a 2012 letter to the B.C. energy ministry, Bennett warned of the danger of smart meters triggering “molecular earthquakes.” The BCUC panel wrote: “While Mr. Bennett has an electrician’s knowledge of electrical systems, it is clear that he is unqualified to give expert opinion evidence on the health effects of RF, exposure standards for RF, engineering, physics or geological phenomena such as earthquakes.” Continued / A9

Mailbag: Feedback on bylaw enforcement and city council. First Nations world view To the Editor, Despite promises of wealth, resource development not only threatens our environment but insults and attacks the core values of First Nations and all other Canadians who care about the land we call “Canada”. There is a predominant belief that mankind has dominion over the earth. There is a narrowmindedly neglects to consider the aboriginal worldview, which holds mankind as the least powerful and lowest in the fundamental heirarchy of the traditional order of creation. Nothing on earth depends upon humans for survival. In the general scheme of things, mankind is expendable to the earth which would begin healing itself without us. As George Carlin once said of mother earth - “She’d shake us off, like a bad case o’ fleas.” Aboriginal peoples’ lives everywhere have always been based on a respect for and symbiotic
relationship with nature, living in cooperation with it and completely dependent upon environmental stewardship for continued survival. Whether adopting a westernized lifestyle including Christianity or not, even today the continued basis for First Nations’ spirituality and their deepest reason-forbeing is a covenant with their Creator to be ‘guardians of the land’. A world-view increasingly adopted by non-aboriginals’ too. It’s strangely ironic, with all that Canada’s First Nations have endured since European contact, but we should thank First Nations for inspiring us to have a deeper and more meaningful relationship with God. But we should also that them for reminding us all what it means to be a good Canadian. Liz Stonard, Port Alberni
City council ill-informed To the Editor, The UBCM resolution is yet another example of how extremely ill-informed certain
members of our city council, and the entire transportation committee are concerning the particulars of the Raven coal mine project proposal. It’s embarrassing that we have leaders in this city that are clueless when it comes to issues concerning major industrial development proposals such as Raven, even though many of us have attempted to present the detriments of this coal project to them numerous times. Where are the intelligent, educated, compassionate members of our society who have the where-with-all to navigate through important, lifechanging proposals thoroughly and who can comprehend the implications and then make the appropriate recommendations, for everyone? There are people, like me, who criticize and mope concerning ourselves with the constant idiocy and it would just be nice, for once, to have some leadership with quality, people who are truly concerned with making the right decisions that benefit everyone, who
would step up to the challenge and lead our community the way it should be. It’s not rocket science, a lot of decisions that have to be made are simply common sense. Yes there is a lot of reading, but anyone with postsecondary education is familiar with how responsibility comes hand-in-hand with a lot of homework. Stacey Gaiga, Port Alberni
Bylaws need to be enforced To the Editor, Who is responsible for enforcing bylaw regulations? For the past forty years, I have been a happy resident/ vacation rental owner at Sproat Lake…until this summer. Case in point: I’ve been having an issue with my neighbour about shrubs encroaching on my property. After requesting a survey be done by Acres and Pollack, my property lines were established. But where can a bylaw enforcement officer be reached? I feel that every Sproat Lake property owner needs to receive a copy of our
bylaws and then be held accountable. Perhaps the student marine patrol could distribute copies of our bylaws while they are on duty and see boaters not abiding by these bylaws. A more serious lake issue is skiers and wakeboarders coming too close to wharves and swimming areas. Not only is there going to be a serious injury to swimmers/ dock people but the beaches/foreshores are getting seriously eroded by big waves washing ashore from those complacent boaters. Another serious issue is the rental of boats to individuals who do not have a valid marine license. It is like an accident waiting for a place to happen. These issues are serious and need to be enforced by an officer that could be hired on-call. If not dealt with, the personal safety of our residents and properties are at serious risk. Police patrols and checking for boat registration numbers and responsible behaviour/boating rules should be taking place. Heather Mallory, Port Alberni

Now that the children are back to school many of us think about taking some courses. Our church mail box was full this week with literature from many different colleges. We can upgrade our education, we can learn how to cook exotic meals and for so many who have recently lost their jobs it is s a chance to learn a new skill which hopefully will put them back in the work force. As Christians it could also give us the opportunity to learn a little more about our faith but bible study classes are not usually oversubscribed. We feel that we are just one of a few and keep our faith just for Sunday. Life is a challenge - for so many there are things we’d rather not confront. But if we remember that God has us in His hands we do not have to worry. He’s got as plan for entrepreneurs, for artists, for home makers, even for those who haven’t yet decided which paths to take. The road of life is not always a bed of roses but roses there are aplenty. God comes through. He always does.

horning long locks of hair for charity is little inconvenience when compared to what someone fighting cancer faces, Melanie Anderson said. The Walmart photo department employee is having her hair shaved “down to the wood” in the store’s parking lot on Friday and is donating her locks and proceeds for doing so to charity, she said. The move coincides with the Cops For Cancer Tour de Rock, the riders from which arrive on in Port Alberni Friday afternoon. Anderson said she’d considered losing he locks before. She didn’t commit last year though because she was performing in plays and had long hair. “I’m not performing this year though so I decided this has to be

children in Canada, Anderson said. Several of Anderson’s family members and friends
have been touched by Cancer, she said. “My mother had skin cancer, and both my grandmothers died of complications related to cancer,” Anderson said. But she also thinks about three local children: James Albrecht, Brett Wasylyniuk and Carmen Steinbach, who have battled or are battlling cancer. “They suffer, and this is easy to do compared to what they go through,” she said. Albrecht is in Vancouver but will be back in Alberni in time to cut one of Anderson’s braids off, she said. Anderson has reached her goal of raising $500 for her head shave. She’ll continue to take donations until Friday though, she said. “A lot of people want to contribute to charity,” Anderson said. “This gives them a reason to.”

A proposed city bylaw encouraging uptown investment and property development amounts to local business subsidizing competition against themselves, Best Western Barclay Hotel general manager Peter Muggleston
said. City councillors passed three readings of the Commercial Uptown Revitalization Bylaw at their Monday meeting. More than a year in the making, the bylaw encourages property owners to create or improve commercial and multi-family spaces. The crux of the bylaw is the
investment required before it kicks in. A $1 million investment entitles an owner to a 100 per cent municipal tax exemption on improvement costs for a maximum of 10 years. A $100,000 investment fetches a 100 per cent municipal tax exemption on improvement costs for up to a maximum of five years.

Upcycling: turning trash into treasure Everyone has heard the adage “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” This has never been more true with the recent trend to “upcycle”, or turn something that may no longer be useful into something new. “Upcycling is the act of taking an unused item and literally turning it into an item you will use,” says Amber Bosma, marketing manager for UsedEverywhere. com. “Essentially you take something that’s no longer wanted or needed and turn it into something fabulous.”
Almost anything can be upcycled, from old furniture to clothing to construction materials. “I think the most popular upcycle I’ve seen lately involves pallets,” says Bosma. “I’ve seen pallets turned into garden swings, into bed frames and into beautiful coffee tables!” Other creative projects include turning old clothing into pillows (or a dog bed for man or woman’s best friends perhaps?), making jars into lanterns or candleholders or updating an old mirror with a new frame or paint. “That bulky old

on our websites and then offers several upcycling options for that item.” Pintrest and Facebook are also a great source for upcycling ideas. “Choose good quality items to upcycle,” says Bosma. “The item itself may be ugly, but what’s important is the quality of the material. An upcycle can be as simple as a lick of paint and new handles or as complicated as your imagination allows.” Upcycled items are more than just unique; they’re also much kinder to the environment. “Why throw it away when it can
be reused and given a new lease on life?” says Bosma. “If you love unique pieces of furniture then upcycling is the way to go, plus you get to add your own flair if it’s a doit-yourself project. And best of all, if you’re like me and you love to bag a bargain, upcycling your own items is much cheaper than buying new.” Suddenly spending weekends scouring garage sales sounds much more appealing! In Memory of Gerrit Koning August 18, 1933 – September 18, 2013 Surrounded by family, our Pa and Opa, Gerry, peacefully passed into the presence of his Lord and Saviour on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at 80 years of age. He was predeceased by his wife Pearl (2008) and is survived by his children: Fred (Hilda), George (Trish), John (Joanne), Helen, and Ben (Muriel); grandchildren: Luke (Jaclyn), Heather, Ben (Liz), Jon, Karen, Sharon (Mike), Hannah and Abby as well as numerous relatives in The Netherlands including three brothers and one sister. Gerry was born in The Netherlands and as a young man immigrated to Canada in 1952 to make a better life for himself. After marrying Pearl in Haney in 1954, Gerry moved to the Alberni Valley, a community he loved. He found steady employment with MacMillan Bloedel in their Plywood Mill, a work place which he enjoyed for 38 years. Gerry was very active in the church community as a member of the Alberni Valley Christian Reformed Church and later in life as a member of Knox Presbyterian Church. As a citizen of the greater community he volunteered a good deal of his time with numerous local organizations including the Port Alberni Association for Community Living, Port Alberni Family Guidance Association, Port Alberni Elder College and the Alberni-Clayoquot Continuing Care Society. In later years, Gerry often could be found at local restaurants enjoying a coffee or a meal with friends. A celebration of life will be held at 2:45 pm on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Knox Presbyterian Church, 4850 Regina Street, with Rev. Laura Hargrove officiating. A private interment service will take place at Alberni Valley Memorial Gardens prior to the celebration of life. Stories and condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www. chapelofmemories.ca. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gerry’s memory may be made to Echo Village/ Fir Park Village Foundation, 4200 10th Avenue, Port Alberni, V9Y 4X3. Gerry’s family is grateful for the excellent care provided by his doctors; Damian White, Robbie O’Dwyer, Jim Ferguson; the incredible staff at West Coast General Hospital and the attentive caregivers at Ty Watson House. They are also very thankful for the love and support he received from his many friends, church community and cancer survivor group.

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden & unexpected passing of our very dear wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt cousin & friend on September 11, 2013. Noreen was predeceased by her daughter Cathy and parents John & Lois Blower. Noreen was the love of her husband Ron’s life, and will forever be remembered and missed by Ron, daughters Christine (David) Kohlen, Valerie (O’Reilly), son Rob (Debra), son-in-law David (Barbara) Stratmoen, as well as her 9 treasured grandchildren and her ďŹ rst greatgrandchild Amelia. Noreen was born in May of 1932 in Port Alberni with her 5 wonderful siblings and numerous wonderful cousins and had many wonderful memories growing up there. In 1951 she married Ron, raised their 4 children in Port Coquitlam and worked many years at Valleyview Hospital. She and Ron worked for years building their dream home on Denman Island and have lived there since 1981. Noreen was such a vibrant and independent woman. She was the absolute light of our lives - the heart of our homes and a dear friend to all she met. We will forever miss her infectious laugh and her positive spirit. There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date.

Former mill man keeps busy with wood projects

Abbeyfield resident Ben Thomas displays an aboriginal piece he carved. Thomas was born in the Valley in 1929.
“I was born right here in the Valley in 1929 through a native midwife, who brought me to this world. And soon after, I was registered in the old, old hospital (the first hospital in the Valley) on the corner of Redford”, says Ben Thomas, a resident of Abbeyfield, who has lived all his life in the Valley, studied, worked, raised his family, and developed a passion for carving, painting, etc.
Thomas’ parents came to Alberni in the early 20’s from Ontario. His father was a “Salt Water RCMP Officer” (later changed to “Fish Water”) and his mother a housewife who raised five children, (two girls and three boys) at home. During his working life, Thomas spent most of his years at the Somass Mill (35) until his retirement a couple of decades
ago. He also worked in construction, and logging in Franklin River. His family life as an adult began when he married Bernice in the early fifties and had a boy and and a girl. He states that he spent valuable time with her especially when she became ill in her last years of life in their house on 8th Ave. Bernice died over two years ago and with her passing, Thomas decided to

sale his house and move to Abbeyfield. “This is my home until I died”, he says. “This place is the best you can find anywhere. We have our meals, we have company and we have the freedom to come and go and do what you like to do!”, he said. That is true, as he has continued working on a hobby he started as a young boy while attending Alberni Elementary School, that is, wood carving. During his life time, he has produced hundreds of native carvings of all different types, from nature, such as wild animals: eagles, bears, moose, etc, to typical native artifacts. He has also been painting for decades, mainly west coast themes, related to native people, land and artifacts. “I do my own paintings and I truly enjoy doing it”, he states. He proudly displays various art work he does in her room of Abbeyfield. And when asked about his prolific production, he comments: “Look, I never do business with my crafts, I do this because I love it. So, I give it away!” Thomas talks avidly about his work. “I can spend hours talking about it, no kidding”, he adds. His recent project was to paint the crests of all the 30 NHL hockey teams, now on display on one of his room’s walls. “Hockey is something I enjoy very much. Look at these trophies”, he points. “They were presented to me when I coached junior hockey teams in the 70’s. The kids appreciated my work and dedication to their sport”. We left Abbeyfield with a positive feeling after talking to Ben Thomas, a natural craftsman.
