RESCUE ON MOUNT ARROWSMITH

Tough task for searchers Local man breaks his ankle on hike; spends night on mountain NEIL HORNER

news@pqbnews.com

When a hiker fell and broke his ankle on Mount Arrowsmith on the weekend, rescuers had little difficulty in finding him. The challenge, said Arrowsmith Search and Rescue spokesman Gordon Yelland, was getting him down. The man was hiking Saturday with his wife and two dogs when he reportedly fell, breaking his ankle. “Alberni Search and Rescue was called out Saturday afternoon after the man took a fall and broke his ankle,” Yelland said. “They called for help and cell phones do work up there because of the towers on the mountain.” Alberni Search and Rescue hiked to the couple — located at about 4,100 feet up the mountain — and arrived at 8 p.m. They attempted to get the Comox 442 Squadron to hoist the man to safety, but deteriorating weather and difficult terrain made that impossible. “Poor weather in the area frustrated several attempts by the 442 Squadron crews throughout Saturday evening, as thick clouds clung to the mountain,” said Sergeant Guy St-Denis, Search and Rescue Technician. “After orbiting the area and making several approach attempts, crews were forced to turn back to Comox, as GSAR crews continued to carefully bring the injured middle-aged man to lower elevations.” Yelland said Alberni Search and Rescue members hiked the woman and two dogs down the mountain to safety, while two members remained with the injured man. “We got called at 5:30 a.m. on Sunday,” Yelland said. “We initially had six people respond. We met at the Alberni SAR hall, where the managers gave them directions and sent them off to the area.” Two of the team were trained in rope rescue techniques, but an assessment of the situation showed that rescuers were going to need a bigger rope team. Fortunately, a rope rescue course — led by experts from both Arrowsmith and Alberni Search and Rescue — was underway in Duncan at the time. See INJURED HIKER, page A5

John Christie shows off the hidden floor safe his crew uncovered.

Another mystery safe

Workers find this treasure beneath floor at old Save-On gas station location NEIL HORNER news@pqbnews.com

It’s either filled with a whole lot of gold or a whole lot of nothing. That’s the assessment of Parksville Heavy Equipment president John Christie after workers discovered a hidden floor safe during the demolition of the Save-On-Gas station and attached restaurant on Friday. One thing he can say for certain though is that the safe was completely hidden from view, floored over beneath the linoleum. This was the second secret safe the crew has found in the last few weeks. The first, discovered during demolition of the old Thwaites Norris building in downtown Parksville, contained nothing but a mysterious key.

As Christie and his crew watch, the concrete containing the safe is broken by heavy equipment and then hoisted into the air. A few bashes against the concrete smashes the remaining cement clinging to the tube and then the equipment operator picks it up and gently deposits it in the bed of Christie’s pickup truck. He plans to take it back to the shop to cut it open. “It’s not too often we run into safes, but we’re two in a row here,” he said. Although Christie is deeply curious about the contents of the safe, it’s not the only surprise he and his team have come across as they demolished the 1930s-era structure. While one such surprise involved a hidden and long forgotten grease pit, another one simply walked onto the demolition site. Warren Banks did much of his growing up in the building his father built. In fact, said Christie, he was actually born in it. See WATER POURS, page A4

It was the worst case of animal neglect she had ever seen. Now Comox Valley and District SPCA shelter supervisor Jennifer Filgate is looking for help to look after seven cats and 11 kittens seized from a home in Bowser on Sept. 11. The Siamese cats were found malnourished and dehydrated and suffering from a wide range of medical issues. “They had extreme fleas so bad that quite a few of them are either missing hair or are hairless altogether,” she said. “They were also suffering from malnutrition and internal parasites like tapeworm and roundworm.” The kittens were covered in dried blood from the flea bites when they were seized. “This is probably the worst case of just plain neglect I’ve ever seen,” she said. “It was completely preventable. It wasn’t abuse, it was just plain neglect. It’s heartbreaking.” The cats and kittens, she added, are going to need intensive treatment over the

next several weeks. “They are very, very friendly and very happy now that they are cleaned up,” Filgate said. “They will be in our care for quite some time, as it takes more than one treatment to deal with internal parasites. They need time, nutrition and care.” The SPCA is seeking to lay charges against the former owner of the animals. Filgate noted the shelter had already been inundated

VICIoUS Dog BYLaW

Attack prompts city to issue a reminder Bylaw requires ‘vicious dogs’ to be muzzled while in public places AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com

An incident with a pit bull in the dog park on Despard Ave. in Parksville this summer has led to a reminder they must be muzzled within the city. In the last week of August during the usual routine of dog owners socializing and watching their dogs play in the off-leash park, a pit bull pinned another dog down by the neck and started attacking it, bylaw compliance officer Aaron Dawson said people reported. “During the kerfuffle, or whatever you’d call it, the owner of the pit bull disappeared and we had no way to track the dog,” he said. Dawson, who was on vacation at the time, doesn’t know what, if any, injuries the dog sustained, but it did survive and there were no human injuries reported. That led to the posting of signs

and more discussion and questions in the community, he said. Parksville Bylaw 1284 (available at www.parksville.bc.ca) requires that any “vicious dog,” including any breed or cross breed of pit bull, must be muzzled while on the streets or in any public place. Dawson said the bylaw was first passed in 1997 and the city does deal with a few dog-bite incidents a year. He points out that fines are considerably higher for vicious dogs, which also include “any dog with a known tendency or disposition to attack without provocation or a dog that has bitten another domestic animal or human without provocation,” he said. The fine for a dog at large for example is $75 for most dogs, $500 for vicious dogs. The owners of vicious dogs who don’t have their pets muzzled are subject to a $500 fine. Contact the bylaw compliance officer at city hall at 250-954-3080 with questions or complaints about domestic animals within the city.

Bad season for wasps If you think the summer wasp season has been particularly bad this year, you’re probably right. In fact, says Bola Sagbamiye, this summer’s wasp problem was more than twice as bad as normal. The regional manager of Abell Pest Control said his company normally deals with about 200 complaints of wasp infestations per month in a normal summer, but this year they dealt with more than twice that number.

“Calling it a bad year for wasps is an understatement,” he said. “This has been probably the highest I’ve seen it in about 12 years. It has been very, very busy.” The reason, he said, had everything to do with the weather. “Because of the hot, dry summer we had, it allowed the wasps to reproduce rapidly and they were very, very active,” he said. “One month we did 500 wasp nests.” — Neil Horner

They were part of a large group that turned out despite the pouring rain Sunday for the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation tree planting event, which saw volunteers plant 250 trees in the park.

Injured hiker expected to make full recovery continued from page a1

“We talked with the fellows and it was decided they would shut down the rest of the evaluation on Sunday and they would evaluate them on the hillside,” Yelland said. “They came off the course and assisted with the evacuation.” It was, Yelland added, one of the most involved rescues the local SAR volunteers had experienced in quite some time.

“The trail was quite steep in places and very narrow and hard to work on,” he said. “The rope teams would set up pitches so they could lower the stretcher down the steeper areas. When they had an area where they could hike more easily, the ground team would move the stretcher down the trail and the rope team would hook up the next pitch.” As the weather finally broke, the he-

licopter crew landed the large aircraft in a confined area along a road and after a short time the search and rescue members arrived by vehicle with the injured man, transferring him to the Cormorant crew. “The first responders with the search and rescue crews had already applied first aid to the patient, so we continued to treat him on the way to hospital in Nanai-

Yelland said the man is expected to make a full recovery from his ordeal. “He was up there for a long time,” he said. “It was a long time in the stretcher, too, with a painful ankle like that.” He said while Alberni searchers had no trouble finding the man, Yelland said it was one of the more difficult evacuations they’ve done.

Holly Carnegie Letcher, foreground at right, welcomed people to the new permanent labyrinth at Parksville Community Park Saturday, Sept. 21. Labyrinth lovers from around the world were in town for the 15th annual gathering, Labyrinths for Global Healing, Landscapes for the Soul at Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Resort.

LABYRINTHS

Children get a chance to build Event was held in conjunction with international event at Tigh-Na-Mara NEIL HORNER news@pqbnews.com

Elementary students from four local schools got a chance to get their hands dirty as they learned how to build their own labyrinth at Parksville beach Friday. The event, said organizer Holly Carnegie-Letcher, was the Children’s Labyrinth-Building Workshop, one of the activities held in conjunction with

the International Labyrinth Gathering, held at Tigh-Na-Mara Resort from Sept. 16-22. She said the labyrinth workshop gave the children from Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Errington and Winchelsea Elementary schools more than just a chance to put down their books for a fun day at the beach. “We learn about working together and problem solving together,” she said. “When they walk the path it’s a great left-right brain exercise, great brain stimulation.” Labyrinths, she said, are ancient pathways that are found in cultures all over the world. “We use them as a walking medita-

tion,” she said. “It’s a peaceful pathway, a chance to quiet the mind. Its a time to enact with whatever is important to you.” The gathering, she said, is the 15th annual, but the first to be held in Canada. The event, she added, brought about 150 delegates from countries around the globe. The delegates, she said, planned to take some time to walk the labyrinth the children made before heading off on two tours — one that went to the Courtenay-Comox area to experience the labyrinths in that area and one that was destined to stay local, visiting labyrinths in Parksville and Qualicum Beach.

Drivers not getting the messages When police held a roadside education campaign to push the need to slow down and move over when stopped emergency vehicles have lights flashing, 59 drivers got the message the hard way. Same goes, it seems, with schoolzone speed limits. Corporal Mike Elston said the members of the RCMP’s Central Vancouver Island Traffic Services, the North Island Integrated Road Safety Unit, Oceanside RCMP, Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement and Island District Roving Drug Interdiction joined forces

for the ermergency-vehicle project on Sept. 19 between 2:30 and 9:30 p.m. on Highway 19 between Exit 51 and Horne Lake Rd. In total, he reported, 103 offences were dealt with by way of charge or warning. Of those, 59 were for offences related to drivers who failed to slow down to at least 70 km/h and move over when passing an emergency vehicle that has emergency lights activated. In addition, two vehicles were removed from the road with serious defects, six speeding tickets were issued,

three prohibited drivers were taken off the road, and two drivers were found to be using an electronic device. One driver had no insurance, one vehicle was impounded, three commercial vehicle inspections were undertaken and two drug interdictions were completed. In 2009 legislation was passed to help protect first responders and tow truck drivers working on B.C.’s highways. Meanwhile, RCMP report 52 people were charged with speeding in a school zone during the first week of school. — RCMP/NEWS Staff

The Kris Kringle Craft Market has moved to Nanaimo this year and will be held at the Beban Park Centre, located at 2300 Bowen Road. The Kris Kringle Craft Market ran for 16 years in Qualicum Beach before it was moved to Parksville, where it operated for three years.

The event had the entire Parksville Community and Conference Centre turned into a Christmas Village complete with the Kringle Family, 150 craft vendors, wagon rides around town, live music and a kid’s station. More than 10,000 people went through the doors to Kringle Land during the four-day event, and donations were collected for the local Salvation Army. HIGHWAY 19A WORK IN PARKSVILLE

Plastic grass for medians Bella Turf same cost as stone AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com

Parksville traffic medians could soon be much more attractive permanently, thanks to an artificial turf pilot project. “The original plan was not to use grass or trees since there is no irrigation out there yet,” explained city engineering technician John Diggins of work being down along Highway 19A by the Temple Store. They were planning on a stone surface forwhat’s considered interim work until the eventual widening of the road, when Sharecost Rentals and Sales of Nanaimo pitched the idea of using Bella Turf.

They got samples in the city works office and did the research and everyone was really impressed, Diggins said. The turf costs around the same as the stone would have, around $7/sq.ft., and won’t require the cutting and watering maintenance of real grass, he said. The $2 million worth of work on that stretch of road is expected to be completed around the end of September and the city will keep a close eye on the turf medians to see how it holds up, for consideration in other similar applications around the city. After a 2012 traffic study, the city felt it was necessary to do the interim work to resolve pedestrian and vehicle turning safety issues before the highway is widened to four lanes by 2022.

The NEWS team of fundraisers for the Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock campaign grew last week with Dr. Neill Neill throwing his hat, or hair, into the ring. “I’ve lost a lot of people to cancer, including two sisters in law, an uncle and my son,” said the local psychologist, “and when Peter (McCully) announced he was doing it I thought, ‘here’s a great chance to do something.’” “Everybody knows somebody with cancer or who dealt with it, and things are getting better, the research is working,” he said of improving survival rates. He’s also happy the 1,000 km cycle down the length of the Island by 16 law enforcement and media riders starting this weekend focuses on children with cancer. “I’ve always been a big supporter of Children’s Hospital,” he said, adding the only other time he shaved his head was to raise funds for a child with a rare disease in the 1990s. Neill said he’s late to the fundraising game this year and won’t likely catch up to The NEWS

publisher McCully, who’d raised $1,480 and Joan LeMoine, at $1,795 as of Monday morning, but he’ll keep at it. He said that while he legally can’t solicit from his long list of former clients, he’ll be working the phones and hopes the money keeps coming in even after they shave their heads at the Rotary Beer & Burger night at the Quality Inn Bayside Sept. 26 when the tour passes through town. Together they hope to raise $10,000 for the cause they believe in and they’re calling on the community to help. Black Press has sponsored the event for all 16 years and The NEWS is happy to support the fundraising efforts. All proceeds go to pediatric cancer research and programs for children with a history of cancer. Tickets for dinner with the riders — including Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman and Black Press rider Arnold Lim — are $20 and available at Parksville Chrysler, the Quality Inn or any Parksville Rotary member. For more on the ride visit www.tourderock.ca. One taxpayer

T

here are many ways to view the value of the annual convention of the Union of B.C. Municipalities, which local politicians and senior municipal staff attended last week in Vancouver. We will try to avoid a cynical default position that labels the gathering as a taxpayer-paid junket allowing local politicians to schmooze with each other and provincial-decision makers. First and foremost, this is a chance for local mayors and councillors to get some face time with ministers who can influence where the money in the provincial kitty is allocated. Around here, that means Qualicum Beach Mayor Teunis Westbroek can plead his community’s case regarding waterfront rejuvenation. The erosion of that town’s waterfront, it could be easily argued, is just as much of a provincial and federal concern as it is municipal. Meanwhile, Parksville Mayor Chris Burger can use the UBCM to seek funding for a colossally-expensive water treatment and supply project for the city. (See Thursday’s edition of The NEWS for more on what local politicians say about their time at the UBCM). Meanwhile, delegates can push the provincial government — supposedly with the might of a unified group of local, on-the-ground politicians — to consider B.C.-wide measure they believe will be good for our communities, things like changes in speed limits or liquor laws. Thing is, it’s the same situation every year. News comes out of the UBCM about what changes local politicians want to see, and the provincial government takes them under consideration and does what it feels is proper, or fits its agenda, or can be handled financially. What often gets lost is the fact there is only one taxpayer. Local governments and their politicians often speak about ‘leveraging’ and ‘seeking’ funds from senior governments like there’s a different pool of money coming from a different source. The problem is we are over-governed, to the extreme. And all these governments have expensive staff people, once again paid for by the one taxpayer. Your house in this region is governed, if you will, by a couple of municipal governments (city or town plus RDN) and various water and fire districts, a provincial government and a federal government. It would be nice to hear a local politician say it like it is, just once: we are going to the UBCM to see if we can wrestle some of your money away from the provincial government. — Editorial by John Harding

GOING BACKWARDS Qualicum Beach Concerned Citizens, its core group, and their “ take the town back” slogan should be “take the town backwards.” This talk about a Tudor theme? No thanks, its been done to death. Kimberly B.C. is the worst example of a theme town that I have seen. All Bavarian, the Octoberfest will be in full swing soon and everyone trying out their Bavarian accents, and the architecture is worse than the accents. Everything is Bavarian, like they are the only immigrants to Canada or the Kootenay region. It’s embarrassing. Andrew Brown recently put it best in a recent letter to The NEWS (‘Qualicum needs new leadership’). Half of the buildings in the Qualicum Beach downtown core that were built after 1960 could be demolished as far as I’m concerned, as they have no architectural value whatsoever and the construction of them is not much better. The newer buildings built here under the new building code of 2006 are excellent so far. I’m not sure what theme this group implies we are to stick to, as I don’t see a historical architectural theme here in Qualicum. Moreover I don’t see that any of the core members of this new organization have any education in planning, civil engineering, architecture and design, or public administration. Today’s new building codes, along with new LEED standards and very talented Canadian architects, are producing fabulous building designs with a combination in timber, stone and glass and these buildings will

stand for centuries. Not just 40-50 years like the drywall dungeons we have all been living in. Perfect examples of the new architecture would be the new proposed events pavilion at Pheasant Glen, the new proposed Clarion, newly-built Alberni Secondary School, newly-built Nanaimo Golf Club, newly-built Nanaimo Cruise Ship Terminal and many others on the Island, throughout B.C. and around the world created by Canadian architects. Please check out these facilities and visit them. I can tell you first hand that when you go inside these buildings, you just don’t want to leave. They are amazing. Canadian architecture is now accepted globally and exported for our sustainable natural building products. Why not a Canadian theme for Qualicum Beach? So I say live for the future, embrace the new technology whatever age you are, or join the QBCC and live in the past. Brian Jenkins Qualicum Beach

NEGATIVITY A WASTE I sure am getting tired of all the old folks complaining to no end about change in Qualicum Beach. Wake up people, change is good. I am going to be here for the next 40 or 50 years, as are my very young children. We want to see this town flourish and it will not do that without some positive change. Some of our town council members get that and it’s very much appreciated. Thank-you for your hard work and dedi-

cation in this grumpy, old town — especially when faced with nothing but negativity. You complainers seem to think that everyone in town agrees with you. That is not the case and I really think you are the minority. Most of us have better things to do than to sit around and publicly complain all day. We have jobs and children, we have households to run and all kinds of fun activities to keep us busy. We love this town, and we embrace change. Either we’re too busy or we can’t be bothered to voice it publicly, so let me take a few moments to say it now. I personally don’t know anyone who is opposed to the changes happening in Qualicum Beach and I can’t wait to see the finished Clarion. I think changing the railroads into rail trails is the best idea I’ve ever heard. I would love to see an Olive Garden in Qualicum Beach. And don’t tell me you older folks wouldn’t be lining up for a cup of Tim Horton’s coffee if one was allowed. So come on people, stop being so negative. It’s a waste of time and energy. Start thinking of the good that will come with change. Qualicum Beach is a very special place and that will not change because of a building. Conni Pfeiffer Qualicum Beach

Fundraising alert A year ago I started to make charitable donations of $25 to various charitable organizations. Since then, I have been flooded with requests from many other different organizations. The ones I have given money to have been bombarding me with more requests for financial help. These letters have pre-paid postage return envelopes. Also, they have been mailing me calendars, note pads, address return stickers, writing cards and now Christmas Cards, Christmas stickers and Christmas present tags. My concern is this: is there any money left over for the cause that was intended. If I wanted all this junk, I could easily go to a bargain shop. Are there any other readers out there that share my concern? Barrie DonalDson Parksville

survey concerns As regards the VIHA Strategic Initiatives Survey, I would like some further information on this, please. • Is this survey being completely financed by Dalhousie University? • If not is this investigation (survey) being done under a contract from VIHA? • If so, can you divulge the value of the contract?

• Having perused the survey, it would appear that this info could easily have been compiled from info available thru normal health care facilities unless the limit on personal info somehow would inhibit the process. • This may be out of your purview, but why so much interest now when there didn’t appear to be much value in public input when the Oceanside Health Centre was being planned over two years ago? r. a. Bike theFt hurts I am writing you this letter to help a recent bike thief understand the hurt he/ she has caused my nine-year-old son and our family. Recently the thief came into our yard and stole my son’s Redline Proline BMX racing bike. In taking his bike, he has devastated my son and myself. I want him to know that I am a single mom that works two jobs to provide for my family. It takes a lot of savings and planning to be able to pay for the equipment and fees so my son can participate in the sports that he loves. I sincerely hope the thief will reconsider his actions of taking my son’s bike, and will return it unharmed, as I do not have the resources to replace his bike. laurie anD TY JorDan Parksville

listen and think So, Adrian Dix is resigning from leadership of the NDP and it is a dominant issue. I suggest this is a profound mistake. What matters is what the party actually stands for, what positive differences does it propose? Last May, there was a great void in our perception of what fresh approaches the party had for a province in considerable disarray, and voters, seeing nothing positive, stayed at home in droves. Changing the leader changes nothing. The NDP retains a rigid silence on the Liberal/Conservative/Green acceptance of the total privatization of government debts. Why? This ideology has crippled every budget in Canada for the last 38 years and has built enormous un-resolvable government debts from the usurious accumulation of interest-on –the-interest. Who is really pulling the strings? Does the totally different situation in neighbouring North Dakota, and Norway, and others who reject private finance hegemony, mean nothing? Again, the NDP and the Greens proposed a new electoral system, but without specifics it got shuffled way down the list when it should have been the barn-burner. It left the impression that perhaps these parties weren’t all that serious — so, again, why bother voting? It is common to hear that parties are

I attended last Monday’s meeting at the civic centre hosted by the Group of 10 known as the Concerned Citizens of Qualicum Beach. I was surprised to hear when they introduced themselves that several members of the group have lived in Qualicum Beach for two years or less. In fact, two of the gentlemen we see quoted in The NEWS have lived here for two years and less than one year, respectively. I find it curious the QBCC would hold this meeting at a time when they knew that the entire town council and senior staff were out of town at the UBCM meetings in Vancouver and were therefore not able to attend and respond to questions from the public. BUSINESS PROFILE

Salon doing its part for the environment Your hair clippings could be mopping up an ocean oil spill JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com

A Parksville hair salon has gone green in an innovative way that might save sea creatures and help farmers control weeds. Kilogram upon kilogram of hair clippings, along with chemical remnants of dye jobs and perms, used to end up in our landfills. That’s no longer the case at Oceanside Stylist and Barber Shop, thanks to an organization called Green Circle Salons, which collects and makes use of the hair that lands on floor. Cindy Craig has been in the salon business for more than 35 years. She has owned the shop at 147 Morrison Street for 13 years. Up until six months ago, her shop — and basically every other one in the country — dumped their hair clipping in the garbage, along with the

leftover colour tips from dye jobs and empty bottles from chemical-laden hair products. “It all went down the drain,” Craig explained. “That’s all you could do.” Now, for a charge, people from the Green Circle Salons organization come and pick up all those nasties. People from the organization pitched the idea to Cindy and she raised it with her three staff members. “We did a staff vote and we all voted to go for it,” said Craig, who said the salon increased their prices by $1 for each cut, style and colour they do to cover the extra costs. And what do her customers think of this? “They are right on it, in favour of it,” said Craig. The hair collected goes into burlap sacks and then dried and stored in warehouses. It then is converted into forms that can be helpful in soaking up oil spills on the oceans and mats for use in farmer’s fields between crops to keep the weeds at bay, instead of using chemicals.

“It’s a bit more work,” said Craig, “but really it’s minimal for what it’s doing to save the planet. I think (recycling) is the way of the future — every home and business should be doing it.’ Many things have changed since Craig started in this business, even since she bought the shop 13 years ago. Besides this recycling effort, the biggest change Craig said she’s seen in the past 13 years is the growth of her business. “When I started here it was just me and I would spend hours outside reading a book,” Craig said. “I bet our business has tripled since I bought the place. I’m not complaining.” Oceanside Stylist and Barber Shop is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. The shop is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Call 250-248-5753. For more information about Green Circle Salons, visit: www. greencirclesalons.ca.

City needs to steer clear of this business model

T

here is a business model that seems to be gaining traction that I strongly suggest you stay clear of. The model could be called the overinflated model. The principal is to calculate your operating costs and then divide it by the number of customers you think you may have and that is the product price. If your customer number is low it doesn’t matter, you just increase the unit price to ensure you cover your operating cost. Sound familiar? It should. BC Ferries have continued to increase its prices even when the number of passengers using the service is dropping and now the City of Parksville is exploring the concept for its proposed development cost charg-

pays for infrastructure, like roads, water lines, sewer lines and parks. Without development all of those costs will have to be funded by other revenue and the easiest most accessible revenue is property taxes. If the result of increased DCCs is a decrease in development and a decrease in revenue from DCCs, then projects like the proposed water treatment plant will have to be paid for through other revenue, like property taxes. The math is simple, I would prefer to see lower DCCs, more projects and more DCC revenue as a result. Kim Burden is the executive director of the Parksville and District Chamber of Commerce

James Andrew May

April 16, 1926 to September 14, 2013 James was born in Cardston, Alberta, in 1926. He became a successful entrepreneur, respected businessman, community leader, politician, and mentor. He was a caring husband, father, grandfather and friend. Jim founded May Contractors, constructing power lines and bringing electricity to many communities in Northern Alberta. He sold that company and subsequently joined Canadian Utilities, later named Alberta Power, and rose through the ranks to become Northern Division Manager. Jim and his wife Betty lived in Spirit River, Edmonton, Whitehorse, Drumheller and Grande Prairie. Transfers to new locations provided unique opportunities and they made the most of them. Along the way, Jim and Betty raised 3 daughters, learned to ski, helped build 2 ski hills, obtained their pilot’s licenses, made many friends and touched many lives. In addition to his responsibilities with Alberta Power, Jim served as an Alderman in Drumheller and Grande Prairie, served one term as Mayor in Grande Prairie, was chairman of the Grande Prairie Regional College, chaired several boards, and volunteered with many organizations. His strong work ethic and sense of duty to community and family were mainstays in his life. He led by example and encouraged everyone to do their best. A newspaper article stated “The Mays were about as involved in Grande Prairie as you could get.” In 1987, Jim and Betty moved to Nanoose Bay. As a transition to retirement, Jim consulted in the high Arctic. He and Betty learned to sail and enjoyed many boating trips along the east coast of Vancouver Island. He spent hours working on the lathe, enjoyed a game of crib, took courses at Elder College, was involved in PGOSA activities and loved scouting used bookstores for western novels. He kept well informed regarding current affairs, local issues and the stock market. Jim always stayed in touch with family and friends. Jim passed away with his daughters and grandsons at his side. His passing has left a void in many lives. He was well respected and well loved. Jim was predeceased by his wife, Betty, in 2011. He is survived by his daughters Barbara, Pamela and Nancy, their spouses Graham, Joe and Chuck, and his grandsons Dylan and Owen. A service was held on Wednesday, September 18th at Yates Funeral Chapel, Parksville. If friends desire, a donation in Jim’s memory may be made to the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation, 1200 Dufferin Crescent, Nanaimo BC V9S 2B7 or the SPCA, PO Box 1407, Parksville BC V9P 2H3. Varsity Whalers winning in the rain Parksville’s Ballenas football team routs the Sentinel Spartans 42-12 in opener JAMES CL ARKE sports@pqbnews.com

Ballenas Secondary’s varsity football team kick-started the B.C. High School Football regular season on home field last Friday, harpooning the Sentinel Spartans 42-12 in a squall. A hard-fought Double-A match with points on the line played out in wet conditions that included stretches of monsoon rains, it was tough slogging for both teams, but it was the Whalers with the clear edge. “Hate the rain, love the game, goooo Whalers!” said a fan from under her brolly. Cobby Stubbins got the Whalers’ 2013 campaign off on the right foot when he returned the opening kickoff 83 yards down the right sideline, and captain Scott Childs loped in around the left side for the major on the Whalers’ first play from scrimmage, his first of three majors on the day. Wearing their black and blues, the Whalers would score twice more in the opening quarter for a 21-0 lead, and were up 27-12 at the half. Sentinel put together a drive late in the second quarter and were on the Whalers 10 yard line in the dying seconds but came up empty. In the end, the Spartans, who have not had a senior team in six years, shot themselves in the cleats with too many mistakes to stay in the hunt. “They are pretty raw,” Whalers’ head coach Jeremy Conn said of the visitors, “but they have a lot of talent and could really shock some teams down the road.” On Ballenas’ side of the ball, Childs added two more TDs off great catch and runs of 45 and 77 yards. Ballenas QB Garrin McDonnell added another 22 yard TD strike to tight end Tyson Nerbus to finish 3-for-6 for 144 yards,

all three passes for majors. “It was a tough day for throwing and catching the ball so I was proud of how our little scat-back AJ Messner was able to run hard in the second half behind our offensive line,” said Conn. Filling in for injured running backs Thomas Franks and Coltin Laplante, Messner rushed for 88 yards on 15 carries including a seven yard TD run. Fullback Tyson Low ran for 36 yards and a touchdown on five touches. Middle linebacker Adam Droog led

the Whalers’ D with nine tackles and a sack; Messner added eight tackles and a sack; Childs chipped in with five tackles along with three interceptions, and Josh Bouchard, back in the lineup after an injury last season, bagged five tackles as well. “We opened the game well and had a solid second half, but our performance in the second quarter has me concerned,” said Conn, adding the Whalers’ “cleaned it up” in the second half shutting out the Spartans’ and controlling the clock. “We need to reduce those penalties

and do a better job of getting off blocks and tackling,” said Conn. GAME ON: The Varsity Whalers are in North Van on Friday to take on the Windsor Dukes. IN JV ACTION: The junior varsity Whalers lost 41-12 to the Mt. Douglas Rams in Victoria Wednesday and are currently tied with them for top spot in their five-team Island division at 1-1. The JV Whalers are in Nanaimo on Wednesday for a big game against John Barsby’s Bulldogs.

Late goal sends Gens to overtime tie Saturday JAMES CL ARKE

sports@pqbnews.com

Domenic Kolbeins scored on penalty shot with 3:23 left in the game to force overtime, Liam Giroux made 54 saves, and the Save-On-Foods Oceanside Generals salvaged a point on home ice Saturday night with a 4-4 tie against the Campbell River Storm in VIJHL action. “It feels great,” Giroux, 17, surmised through a smile outside the Gens’ dressing room after the game, adding “I was really nervous going into the overtime, it was nerve-wracking. “It’s a lot of fun,” he said of what is amounting to a baptism by fire for the easy going young

goalie from Qualicum Beach who is playing his first season of junior hockey. “It’s really skilled it’s a lot more skilled than Major Midget. I like it a lot better,” and agreed “I’ve faced a lot of rubber (but) I seem to play better when I face more shots.” Asked about his teammates, who battled back from behind three times,” they worked hard, we all worked hard, it was a good team effort.” An exciting, free-wheeling game in front of another goodsized crowd, the Storm out shot the Generals 58-42 Saturday night, and Giroux, named the Games first star seemed to get

stronger as the game wore on. Campbell River scored the only goal of the opening period, and went up 2-0 early in the second stanza, but Ryan Scott (Colton Burt) and Ethan Larson (unassisted), struck for two goals in under two minutes to tie the game 2-2. The Storm countered to go up 3-2 just over a minute later, and Logan Savard (Greg Tuckerman, Jonah Pearson) tied it up 3-3 at 11:41. Campbell River scored with under four minutes left in second to take a 4-3 lead into the final frame, and the two teams traded chances until Kolbeins was hauled down on a break-

away then made good on the ensuing penalty shot much to the delight of the hometown fans. Neither team would score during the five minute sudden death 4-on-4 overtime period, or the five minute sudden death 3-on-3 overtime period, which is how it ended. “That was really exciting game, it just sucked they didn’t go to the shootout after no one scored in overtime,” said a ticked off Micaela ‘Nibbs’ Cameron, an avid fan of the Generals. On Friday night in Campbell River, the Storm out shot the Gens 64-36 and secured a 5-3 win, meaning Giroux faced 122

shots over the two games. Brodie Smith, Ethan Larson and Dylan Moore tallied for Oceanside. The Gens were 0-for-4 on the power play Saturday night and 0-for-7 over the two-game series. “I thought we were a lot better then we were the night before,” Generals’ head coach and GM Brent Demerais said in his post-game interview Saturday night. “Our younger guys are really starting to improve now, and our goaltending was solid. We’re coming together more as a team, and I like the fact they never quit.” See It waS lIke, page A30

Bucs sweep opener Season-openers a success for both teams JAMES CL ARKE

sports@pqbnews.com

It was a great start to the season for Oceanside field lacrosse, as both Buccaneers teams ran roughshod over their opponents on home field over the weekend. On Saturday under ideal conditions at Springwood Park, the U16 Buccaneers blasted the Nanaimo Raiders 25-2, 16-3 in their regular season opening double header, and on Sunday the U14 Bucs followed suit by beating their counterparts from down the road 17-3. 25-6. “The boys all played great; our defence held their ground and played strong, we had a couple goal scorers that were unstoppable, and our goalie had a great day,” said Evan Tuck, who co-coaches the U16 team with Derek Gaughan. Leading the charge for the U16s with career highs (in field lacrosse) were Jory Clermont with eight goals and three assists, and Ian Whibley with seven goals and three helpers. Liam Lowery recorded a hat trick, “and the other thing is there were a lot of kids that scored goals and chipped in with helpers, so it was a real team effort.” “They all played well — we were just dominating them,” team manager Tim Clermont concurred after. “It was a strong effort for sure. It’s going to be a good season.” Rookie goalie Shane Houtman backstopped the Bucs to two more wins. The U16 Bucs, which compete in the nine-team Vancouver Island Youth Field Lacrosse League, pencil in 14 players this year, three of

those first year players. “We didn’t have a U16 team last year we didn’t have enough players so a lot of these guys are reconnecting,” said Tuck. On his rookie goalie Houtman, “he’s never played goalie in field lacrosse, and he’s doing great for us. “Great bunch of kids — we’re really happy with them,” said Tuck. “We have a fairly strong team,” he said, “hopefully they’ll have a lot of fun this year, and we’re definitely still looking for more players to bolster our numbers.” The Bucs were coming off a thrilling exhibition win over the Mid Island Thunder in Duncan the week before that saw Clermont (from Whibley) bulge the twine with one second left on the clock for a 9-8 win. “We only had one exhibition game and it was a nail biter,” said Tuck. “It was a good confidence booster for the boys.” IN U14 ACTION the Buccaneers hosted the Raiders for a double header that included a downpour. In game one Dawson Fyfe and Ethan Bell led the young Bucs with three goals apiece. Taylor Kelloway and Arthur Miller potted five apiece for Oceanside in game two, and Derian Thompson helped the cause with four goals and a helper. Nicholas Lozier-Tilkin played goal for the two wins. WANT TO PLAY for the Buccaneers? Both teams are still looking for more players. The Bucs practice at Springwood Park every Tuesday and Thursday from 7-8:30 p.m.

We only had one exhibition game and it was a nail biter. It was a good confidence booster for the boys. Evan Tuck

“He’s been on fire, making the big saves and giving us an opportunity to stay in these games right now,” Demerais said of Giroux. “He gives us a chance to win every night; we’re still working hard on our back end, trying to eliminate shots and stuff, but we like what we’re seeing. “All in all it was like a win for us.” ICE CHIPS: The Generals have parted ways with 20-year-old local forward Kelyn Opel. Opel, who tallied for five goals and three assists in his six games with the Gens this season, was sent to the North Peace Navigators of the North West Junior League in Alberta for cash in a deal that also included the rights to Nanaimo forward Jordan Clark who quit the team two games into the season. “He’s moving on — it was a mutual agreement,” was all Demerais would say. GAME ON: Now 1-5-1 on the season and sitting last in the VIJHL’s four-team North Division, the Generals take their game to Bear Mountain Arena Wednesday night when they face the 3-4-1 Westshore Wolves and return home for a weekend double header at Oceanside Place that has them playing the 1-5-1 Kerry Park Islanders Saturday James cLarke pHoto night (7:30 p.m. start) and the 2-4-1 Comox Valley Glacier Kings Sunday Oceanside goalie Liam Grioux has stepped up to the challenge of so many shots in this, his first season of junior hockey. Mr. Parksville, ‘Flying Phil’, aka Phil St. Luke, known for his big smile, cheery demeanour and boundless enthusiasm, got a big thrill (and a big round of applause) at the start of Saturday’s VIJHL game at Oceanside Place when he was asked to drop the opening puck, and was presented a keep-sake Generals’ jersey by team captain Travis Flug at centre ice.

Jack and Jill Tournament No hills but lots of water for the Parksville annual pairs event Parksville Lawn Bowling Club’s annual Jack and Jill Pairs Tournament got off to a soggy start this past weekend. The rain “came down in waves, the winds blew, but it couldn’t dampen the emotions or skill of the teams playing in the draws,” PLBC’s Carol Bucyk reports. In all, 44 teams took to the greens for the three day event. The tournament was set up so that the women took the skip positions for the first and fourth games, while the men took over leadership for the second and third. When it was done, six teams managed to score perfect eight point games. Shots and ends won were needed to calculate the final winners. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” one club member said of the rain Sunday. “There were puddles on the greens and rooster tails behind the balls, all the players were drenched, but they played through it.”

In the end, Keith Baker and Kate Wilson took top spot with a strong finish of eight game points, 30 ends and 28 shots. For Baker, this is his third year in a row of winning, with a new female partner each year. Second place went to the duo of Diane Proctor and Jim Muir, and third was Gary Robinson and Kathleen Arthorne. Rounding out the final three positions were Pat Goodwin and Mick Rix (fourth), Ron Davis and Sandy Taylor in fifth, and Carol Bucyk and Rick Dolley in sixth. NEXT UP will be the club’s annual wrap-up tournament on Sunday. The greens get put to bed on Oct. 1. According to Bucyk, short mat, darts, crib, bridge, mah jong and other games will be keeping club members busy for the next six months. Committees will James Clarke photo also be busy planning for the Canadian Jean Roberts assesses the lay of the National Mixed Pairs Tournament which land during tournament action at PLBC on Sunday in a deluge. they will host in Sept. 2014.

ARTIST PROFILE

Balancing intensity and playfulness When she was told to paint big, everything changed for Carrie Osborne LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com

Carrie Osborne says she paints the way she plays the piano, organically. “I do not put an image on the canvas,” she said. “I tend to put colour on the canvas and the image comes out of the canvas for me.” Painting is more of a process of letting go for Osborne. Sometimes she even paints in her dreams. One time she woke up with a poem in her head and thought it had to go in a painting, so it did. But she never plans out her paintings ahead of time. At least not these days. Osborne grew up in Victoria and has been living in the area for 24 years. She has always loved to draw and paint and when she was in Kindergarten she remembers her teacher asking her if she was sure she didn’t want to do anything else but paint. She worked in the medical field for many years, and early on in her work her attention turned to working with children and families using art as therapy. She continues that work today in a private practice. “What I do in therapy is, how do I get people to find their voice in a stronger way” she said. “When you paint it is a language without words, it’s beyond words, it’s beyond language.” Osborne use to concentrate her artwork on realism. She worked on portraiture using graphite and hardly ever worked with colour. Until one day she attended a workshop where she was told to paint big, and everything changed. “That was really a scary thought to go big at first,” she said, “to use colour and to do things differently.” And then a few years ago she thought she’d try acrylic and she fell for the medium, hard. “The first time I tried acrylic I thought my head would pop off,” she joked. “I loved it.”

LISSA ALEXANDER PHOTO

Carrie Osborne’s abstract paintings seen here are up for sale at the Gallery @ Qualicum Art Supply until this Saturday, and her work can also be found at Smithfords, the Island Exposures Gallery in Parksville and the Salish Sea Market in Bowser.

Today Osborne makes striking, vibrant abstract paintings. She calls them inscapes, as they reflect whatever she’s feeling inside at the time. Some of her pieces are calming blue water scenes and others are bright, bold and red. Her studio, called Paint Life Laughing is aptly named to remind to her to maintain a balance between intensity and playfulness. “Painting for an artist is a very solo thing, it can be a very intense thing, there’s a timelessness to it, but there’s also this incredible euphoria, for me. Paint Life

Laughing is just one of those reminders to take yourself way less seriously, and have fun and enjoy the journey.” Osborne’s acrylic abstract paintings are up for sale at the Gallery @ Qualicum Art Supply until Saturday, Sept 28, and they can also be found at the Island Exposures Gallery in Parksville, Smithfords in Qualicum Beach, and at the Salish Sea Market in Bowser. Osborne teaches workshops and classes from her home studio. For more information visit her website www.paintlifelaughing.ca.

TOSH harvesting great musicians LISSA ALEXANDER

reporter@pqbnews.com

SUBMITTED PHOTO BY QIU XIA HE

Dan Kocurek and Christine Eggert will be performing on trumpet and piano at the Old School House Art Centre’s Harvest of Music Festival this weekend.

Autumn has officially arrived and while the region celebrates the harvesting of local produce, the Old School House Arts Centre (TOSH) is gathering its own crop of stellar musicians. The ninth annual Harvest of Music Festival will feature classical music, jazz, and a multicultural adventure among other musical entertainment. It runs Sept 27 through Sept 29 at TOSH. Around the World in 80 minutes (which actually runs two hours) features the internationally acclaimed Silk Road Trio from Vancouver along with Victoria Eastern European and Russian music vocalist and instrumentalist Tony Booker. They will be accompanied by a dynamic ensemble that includes local pianist Ron Hadley. That concert will happen Saturday, Sept. 28 from 7 to 9 p.m. and costs $16. Silk Road Music was founded by Qiu Xia He in 1991. She is a master of the pipa, also known as the Chinese lute, which she has been playing since she was a young child. She also sings and plays percussion. Silk Road ranges from a duo to a full troupe, but often three musicians form a trio. Andre Thibault, Qiu Xia He’s husband, is in the trio. He is from Montreal and has been mastering

the guitar for over 40 years. He is also very skilled at playing the our (middle Eastern lute), the hulusi (a Chinese reed flute) and various other percussion and wind instruments. Liam MacDonald is also in the group, specializing in Brazilian and Middle Eastern frame drums. Silk Road Music has earned two West Coast Music Awards, and a number of prestigious nominations and reviews. Ron Hadley, director of music programming at TOSH, will be performing with the trio on Saturday. Qiu Xia He said she recently invited Hadley to play with her trio at the Chinese Garden in Vancouver and it was “exceptionally exciting. We have our own repertoire and suddenly we have this jazz pianist come in and suddenly we feel like, wow we’re free,” she said. “He’s a fantastic player. He’s very sensitive and knows how to approach Asian music.” Hadley has compiled a group of seasoned musicians to complete the show, with Tony Booker on accordion, piano and vocals, Liam Hockley on clarinets, Jim Cameron on tenor saxophone, Ross MacDonald on bass, and Buff Allen and Liam MacDonald on percussion and drums. Marcie Gauntlett is opening the Beachcomber Studio located at her home in Nanoose Bay this Saturday, Sept. 28.

NANOOSE BAY PHOTOGRAPHER

A pleasureful life as a shooter U.S. Foreign Service work had Marcie Gauntlett living all over the globe LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com

Marcie Gauntlett has been taking photographs since 1945 and the art form continues to spark excitement within her today. “It gives me a real inner pleasure,” said the 79-year-old from her new home in Nanoose Bay. Gauntlett hails from Boston, Massachusetts but has lived in places around the world. Various positions with the Hospital Corporation of America and the United States Foreign Service has had her living in Saudi Arabia, Brussels, Russia and Germany, among other locations. Gauntlett continued to take photographs and she also wrote travel articles while living abroad, and she’s been published in a number of newspapers and magazines in North America and overseas.

She moved to Sooke in 2001 with her husband where she continued to write for publications like the Times-Colonist and also tapped into her other love, cooking. She ran a cooking school there for three years and wrote recipes for WhatsUp magazine. Gaunlett and her husband recently relocated to Nanoose Bay, where her husband has lived previously, and she keeps busy with her photography, cooking, writing and crafts. She also loves to hike, horseback ride and read, she said. “I just have this energy that keeps me going all day.” This Saturday, Sept. 28 she will open the Beachcomber Studio at her home in Nanoose Bay, where people can view her photographs as well as her driftwood signs and all-season wreaths. She also has a collection of post-soviet paintings she acquired while living in Moscow for sale at the studio. The studio opening will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. at 1598 Marina Way where there will be refreshments and snacks. The Beachcomber studio will be open Saturdays from 11 to 4 p.m. For more information visit www.Beachcomberstudio. ca, or email marcichka@telus.net.

Drum workshop in Coombs this weekend An Afro-Latin drum workshop is being offered at the Soundgarden in Coombs this Saturday. Renowned percussionist Robin Layne, known for playing with the musical groups Tambura Rasa and Locarno, will teach how to layer djembe parts to create interlocking patterns in the style of West African drumming. This will allow musicians to jam along to almost anything and also explore

the Carnival Rhythm of Cuba, Conga de Comparsa, and how to adapt this lively rhythm to the djembe. The workshop is being held Saturday, Sept. 28 from 1:303:30 p.m. The cost is $20. People should bring their own drums or let Layne know if one is needed. Register by emailing Layne at info@robinlayne.ca by Thursday. For more on Robyn visit www.robinlayne.ca. — NEWS Staff

SUPER SOAKER SUNDAY: On Sunday, Sept. 15, members of the Parksville Volunteer Fire Department joined the Parksville Fellowship Baptist Church on Pym St. for their “Super Soaker Sunday.” The children at the church had raised $275 on their own and decided to donate it to the PVFD. PVFD member Liz Olson said they will “put the funds towards new equipment which will help us with our ongoing service to the people in the Parksville area.” She said a great time was had by all and the event lived up to its name with the help of fire hoses spraying a lot of water.

two talented young Vancouver musicians, Dan Kocurek on trumpet and Christine Eggert on piano. They will play works by Debussy, Piazzolla, Enescu, Gershwin, Ellington and Stravinsky as well as a set of racy French cabaret music. The Festival comes to an end with a Cornucopia of Jazz from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday. This is an impromptu musical collaboration between this year’s performers and Qiu Xia He said it will be interesting. “This is going to be like a chaotic surprise,” she said. “But sometimes only chaotic things can produce something that’s a surprise.” Prices to attend one of the Harvest of Music programs range from $10 to $16. School DiStrict No. 69 (Qualicum)

COMMUNITY FORUM: PREPARING TODAY’S LEARNERS FOR TOMORROW’S WORLD The Board of Education is seeking community input in the development of a Strategic Plan for the future of learning in the Qualicum School District. Date: Time: Location:

Thursday, September 26, 2013 7:00 pm Springwood Middle School (Multipurpose Room)

To frame its work, the Board and senior staff have constructed four key questions that will be asked and answered across the district: 1. Imagine a time in the future when people around the province look to our school district as a learning community where students of all ages are provided with a world class educational experience that is both engaging and relevant. •

What kinds of programs, systems and structures are in place?

•

Which aspects of this imagined future are you most proud of?

2. As you reflect on the programs, practices and structures currently in place in our school district, what do you see happening that best represents what you value most in an effective education system? 3. What is one thing, perhaps a bigger and bolder step than those previously taken, that could help us provide an improved educational experience to all learners in our school district? 4. What are some of the most significant trends, innovations, and dynamics that demand action if we are going to transform our schools to ensure that all students are well prepared for life in a rapidly changing world? The Board invites & encourages your participation in this interactive forum.

Around the World in 80 minutes will take guests from Western Canada to New Orleans and places like Brazil, Africa, Romania, Russia, Hawaii and Japan. “Basically you don’t need to travel anywhere you just sit there and you visit those places,” said Qiu Xia He. “People may be familiar with some of it or not.” The Harvest of Music kicks off Friday, Sept 27 at 7 p.m. with jazz by the Jim Cameron Quintet. On Sept 28 the Spotlight on Youth takes place from noon to 1 p.m. featuring classical pianist Vivian Lou. The 16-year-old West Vancouver student has won major competitions in Canada and beyond. Saturday music wraps up with Around the World in 80 minutes from 7 to 9 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 29 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. a program called An American in Paris features

Stepping in front of the camera No longer just reporting on Tour de Rock, media members join the team Erin Haluschak, Daniel Palmer and Kyle Slavin Black Press

Jennifer Faerber knows firsthand the impact cancer can have on a child’s life. Faerber, who came to Canada from Australia three years ago to continue her radio career, battled non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma as a kid. She also had the opportunity to attend a camp in Australia similar to B.C.’s Camp Goodtimes, a summer camp for children who have gone through cancer. Faerber, one of four media riders on this year’s Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock team, says going from reporting on the Tour to being a part of the event has been a deeply rewarding experience. “When I first moved to Vancouver Island, Tour de Rock was one of the first stories I had to cover,” said Faerber, news director of Vista Radio’s Coast group of stations, based in Courtenay. “When you work in broadcasting, you talk a lot, but you don’t talk about yourself. I’ve had friends that didn’t really know what I went through.” Faerber said one of her motivating factors as a rider is to tell people “what it’s like when you are that kid with cancer.” She noted how grateful she is to

(Above left) Victoria-based Tour de Rock media riders Jillian van der Geest from KOOL FM and Joe Perkins of CTV News Vancouver Island, and (middle) Arnold Lim of Black Press, are joined by host and news director (right) Jennifer Faerber of Vista Radio’s Jet FM in Courtenay. have gone to a camp during her treatment, and wants to help kids who are currently battling cancer. “When we visited Camp Goodtimes, the kids cheer so loudly for you. I actually felt really comfortable there; I was one of those kids,” While the other three media riders on this year’s 21-person team haven’t experienced cancer the same way Faerber has, they all have their reasons to ride. Black Press media rider Arnold Lim, a father of two, says he thinks about his own kids whenever he gets on the bike. “When we went to Camp Goodtimes I met kids whose stories you don’t know completely, but you know they’ve been dealt some pretty bad cards. But they don’t look any different than my own kids,” he said. “They’re the same age as my kids, but they’ve gone through something that kids their age shouldn’t have to go through.” Lim, who prior to training hadn’t been on a bike for years, says he’s

motivated by those kids whenever he feels the aches and pains of cycling. “There isn’t a day that goes by where my thighs aren’t throbbing or my feet are hurting, but that’s nothing compared to the chemotherapy and the spinal taps that some kids have to go through,” Lim said. “I’m not in any position to complain.” CTV News Vancouver Island reporter and anchor Joe Perkins is grateful no children in his family have been affected by cancer, but he keeps in mind a close uncle who died from lung cancer. “He never smoked a day in his life,” Perkins said. He draws his motivation from his junior rider, Luke Savage, a 17-yearold Grade 12 student at Belmont secondary. “Luke had three jobs this summer, worked seven days a week, knows he wants to be an electrician, he’s finishing up his Grade 12 year, and he’s in remission. … For me, that’s pretty inspiring.”

The close-knit camaraderie amongst this year’s riders and Tour de Rock team also took Perkins by surprise. “I knew it would be special, I didn’t think it would be this special,” he said. “And that’s me saying this before we’ve even left. … I can’t wait to see the Island.” Jillian van der Geest, an on-air host with KOOL FM, has witnessed the impact cancer has on a family whose child is battling the disease. Caleb, the son of a family friend, was diagnosed with a brain tumour at eight years old, and died two years later. “I spent a lot of time with his family, from diagnosis to his death, and it’s heart-wrenching and inspiring to watch a family go through that. All they wanted to do was talk about it and have good times with him,” van der Geest said. “It was a unique experience for me to be there and help the family when I could, but ultimately how can you help with something like that? For me, Tour de Rock – this is me trying to help.”
