Long recovery ahead for elderly crash victim

Const. Misty Dmytar, 2013 Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock rider, wonders what’s cooking with Cpl. Norm Smith, Red Serge Gala organizing committee member, who helped whip up a buffet dinner, entertainment, live and silent auctions and prize draws to help the team raise cash to help children with cancer. The gala happens at the Coast Bastion Inn Sunday (Sept. 29).

A Cowichan-area family is offering its thanks to those who took part in rescuing the driver of a motor home involved in a head-on collision. The crash happened Sept. 9 on the Island Highway near the Duke Point Highway turnoff when a car being driven into oncoming traffic slammed into a motor home, trapping the RV’s 81-year-old driver behind the wheel as the wreck ignited underneath him. The driver and his wife, whose family has asked that they not be identified, are recovering in hospital. Janet Patterson, the couple’s daughter-inlaw, contacted the News Bulletin Thursday to offer an update on the couple’s condition and extend the family’s gratitude to Good Samaritans who stopped to help by discharging fire extinguishers to contain the fire and to the police, ambulance crews and firefighters who attended the scene. Patterson said her father-in-law, who suffered burns and multiple other injuries, is being treated in the Vancouver General Hospital burn and trauma unit where doctors are assessing his condition day by day. The couple was travelling with a convoy of RVs from the Courtenay-Comox area to Rondalyn Resort and RV Park near Ladysmith the day of the crash, which claimed the life of Ryan James Jackson, 20, of Nanaimo. Derek Bayly, a logging equipment mechanic who lives in South Wellington, was among the first people to stop and lend a hand. He had just pulled onto the highway after stopping to refuel his work truck when he came upon the wreck, which had just started to burn. “I’m required to carry two five-pound fire extinguishers in my truck at all times, so out of just instinct, I jumped out, got in the back seat, grabbed a fire extinguisher and ran over there,” Bayly said. “I was the only one there at the time with a fire extinguisher.” Bayly discharged the fire extinguisher underneath the motorhome where he saw flames then ran around to the other side and knocked down a second fire. ◆ See ‘ACTIONS’ /6

embers of the 2013 Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock team will be ready for a feast after a week on the road riding more than halfway down Vancouver Island. Organizers will be ready with the Nanaimo Tour de Rock Red Serge Gala. The Cops for Cancer fundraiser event happens

Sunday (Sept. 29) at the Coast Bastion Inn featuring a buffet dinner and cash bar, prize draws, live and silent auctions and entertainment. “The gala will be a semiformal event,” said RCMP Cpl. Norm Smith, organizing committee member. “It’s an opportunity for everyone to come on over and meet this year’s Tour de Rock riders.” Each year a team of police officers and media guest riders from communities across the Island train several months for the 1,100-kilometre Tour de Rock that starts in Port

Alice, visits 27 Island communities and finishes in Victoria to raise money for Camp Goodtimes, a summer camp for children with cancer, and children’s cancer research and support programs. This year’s 21 riders started their journey Saturday and will spend nearly two weeks riding a course potholed with physical and emotional challenges before they dismount for the last time Oct. 4. The gala will be emceed by Nanaimo RCMP Supt. Norm McPhail with a predinner concert performed by Daragh Fitzgerald.

Winners of top live and silent auction items will take home a game-played hockey stick autographed by Matt Irwin of the San Jose Sharks who was a former defenceman and team captain with the Nanaimo Clippers; furniture donated by Dodd’s Furniture and Mattress; a bar fridge custom painted in Tour de Rock jersey colours and stocked with the kinds of refreshments you’d expect to find in a bar fridge; a wall of wine; an Island weekend getaway package and other items. ◆ See ‘MONEY’ /6

Apathy over thefts frustrating to police By Chris Bush The News BulleTiN

downtown waterfront had been slated for a proposed private marina before citizens convinced the City of Nanaimo to save the space. Pat Barron, who was part of the citizen group fighting for the downtown waterfront, said people deserve to lose land if they don’t fight for it. “You have to take a stand. You have to be outspoken.” The City of Nanaimo has shown no indication it wants to purchase land from developers.

Police are spending the time and resources to catch culprits, but victims often fail to report minor crimes. It’s a phenomenon that has vexed Nanaimo Mounties in recent weeks. In an incident in August involving more than a dozen cars broken into in north Nanaimo, Cpl. Dean Muir, a police dog handler, spent hours tracking down and catching two suspects with stolen items. Police managed to link several stolen items to vehicles, and with more than a dozen vehicles suspected of being rifled through, Muir expected there would be several phone calls from vehicle owners reporting thefts. Those calls never materialized. “If we catch these guys with the property, but we don’t have any report of anything we can’t do anything about it,” said Muir. “We can’t go and charge them for something that hasn’t been reported.” A similar incident happened in Nanaimo’s College Heights neighbourhood Sept. 15 at around 3 a.m. when a resident heard a bang, came outside, spotted a suspect and called police. Again, multiple cars had been rifled through. Police failed to catch any suspects in this instance since the thieves’ trail ended abruptly, possibly because they hopped on bicycles or got into a car and drove off. “Multiple vehicles were gone through, but the only people who came forward are the ones where we actually went and knocked on their doors,” Muir said. Rather than physically smash into cars, thieves will often just check for car doors left unlocked. Most thefts from vehicles, in fact, are from unlocked cars. Thieves grab sunglasses, GPS units, spare change or anything they can convert to quick cash or trade for drugs. Muir said the items might be small, but it all adds up and unreported thefts only allow the problem to continue. “Most registered owners are of the belief they are being a nuisance and are only generating additional work for the police if they report something minor such as thefts of sunglasses, CDs or small change,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, in an e-mail. “Often they think nothing will ever happen and it’s a compete waste of time and police resources.” O’Brien said it only takes a few minutes to report break-ins. Police need to hear from victims so criminal analysts can accurately plot and track suspects’ movements and have additional resources, such as plain clothes officers or bait cars, assigned to affected areas.

While last week was declared Reconciliation Week to recognize abuse of aboriginal students at residential schools, First Nations leaders say there is still much work to be done. Reconciliation Week is part of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s activities, which was established to learn the truth about what happened at residential schools. Doug White, chief of Snuneymuxw First Nation, said the acknowledgment and the recognition of the abuse that took place is an important first step but there are a number of dimensions to the process of reconciliation and a lot remains to be uncovered. “It’s made difficult in this overall process of reconciliation that we’re engaged in right now by the simple fact that the Truth and Rec-

onciliation Commission itself, it’s had to go to court to sue the federal government for access to documents that the federal government has withheld about the history of these institutions,” White said during an interview at a Reconciliation Week event at Vancouver Island University on Friday. He said the federal government hasn’t allowed the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to see pages

of documents related to the history of residential schools and that is problematic. “I think it’s important to ask the question: Are we just trying to work towards some kind of false reconciliation? Where the object and the goal simply is to name this ugliness of the past; ‘Let’s wrap it up, let’s put it away and move on in the status quo.’ Because at the end of the day, reconciliation would require

significant changes in Canadian society, Canadian legal structures and frameworks that are at the root of the relationship between Canada and indigenous peoples. If that’s not on the mind of the federal government then we’ve got a problem,” he said. Shawn Atleo, national chief of the Assembly of First Nations and Vancouver Island University chancellor, said there is a tremendous

distance to go and pointed to the situation with land treaties. “Here in Nanaimo for example, I would point to the need for the Douglas Treaties. The Snuneymuxw people have a treaty, it’s yet to be honoured and implemented,” Atleo said. “People can join in and helping to recognize that what’s good for Snuneymuxw, what’s good for treaty nations is good for the country,” Atleo said. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

linley Valley advocates plan strategy to oppose development By Tamara Cunningham The News BulleTiN

Linley Valley advocates are ramping up public support to block a new Nanaimo development. More than 50 people turned out to a Save Linley Valley West meeting last week to strategize ways of protecting 100-hectares of wildlife habitat. The private land is slated for a 353-residence subdivision by Mount Benson Developments Inc. While the company has proposed

to save 45 per cent of the property for park, it isn’t enough for advocates concerned about the area’s ‘fragile’ ecology. As development work begins, Save Linley Valley West is calling for action to halt the project while it searches for ways to preserve the area. Save Linley Valley West advocate Jennifer O’Rourke said those who turned out to a public meeting talked about monitoring site construction, generating public awareness and launching peaceful protests. History

has shown it’s up to citizen activism to protect ecosystems from development and residents seem to have a “let’s do this” attitude, she said. A representative from Mount Benson Development was unavailable for comment before press time. Developers had started to fill in marshes and clear corridors for multi-family homes at Neck point, when the Neck Point Society persuaded city and provincial authorities to purchase the 13-hectare spread. city uSEd social media for questions. By Tamara Cunningham The News BulleTiN

Nanaimo’s debut e-Town Hall meeting has landed its second innovation award this year. The City of Nanaimo captured the Spirit of Innovation Award for best technology at the Municipal Information Systems Association of B.C. conference last week. It is an honour, according to Guillermo Ferrero, the city’s manager of business applications, who said members of the association judged top applications from across B.C. and felt Nanaimo was most successful in pushing the boundaries of technology. The City of Nanaimo held its first e-Hall meeting – the second of its kind in B.C. – last March. Residents’ questions were streamed to a live city council meeting via social media, phone and webform which politicians and city staff responded

to in real-time. “We were one of the first municipalities in Canada to have done something like this ... in a live meeting, in front of a live audience. That’s what the [award is about] – someone that goes and pushes the limits on innovation and does a good job,” Ferrero said. The City of Nanaimo a l s o re c e i v e d a bronze in innovation management from the Institute of Public Administration of Canada. While the e-Hall meeting has made its own case for public engagement value, it wasn’t always such an easy sell, according to Ferrero. There were fears among senior management and city council that the new application would interfere with public meetings and that there would be too many questions or not enough. For some politicians social media was brand new territory, Ferrero said, adding his department helped by taking council through dry runs of the e-Hall technology before the live meeting. Coun. George Anderson is glad his peers embraced the idea, which he pitched last year. The municipality had been challenged to engage the silent majority in civic issues and needed to try something innovative, he said. The process was considered a success, with council and staff members responding to 24 questions in 90 minutes and attracting more variety of comments. Anderson said he hopes the ongoing success helps make the case for youth on council. “There has been constant criticism of young people [in politics], especially myself,” he said. “And this goes to show in some cases when you have young people they are bringing forward new ideas and perspectives. Had I not proposed [an e-Hall meeting], I don’t think council would have gone forward to do it.” news@nanaimobulletin.com

DENTAL CLINIC able to offer services thanks to charity’s support. By Karl yu The News BulleTiN

The cost of dental work can be prohibitive but a non-profit community clinic is doing its best to ensure that the less fortunate have access to dental services. The CODE dental clinic in Nanaimo opened in October 2011 and doesn’t provide services free of charge, but rather offers dental by donation. It is one of the many groups that receive funding from the United Way for Central and Northern Vancouver Island, which began its annual fundraising campaign Friday with a goal of $750,000. “We ask people, the patients, for donations or contributions towards the costs and we need those funds to operate,” said Doug Creba, who is on the clinic’s advisory committee. “But we do not charge the scale that is set by the B.C. College of Dental Surgeons and it means that it’s very affordable for people who are finding themselves in pretty severe dental pain.” Dentists at the CODE clinic are

professionals who volunteer their time. The clinic would not be able to operate solely on donations, so the United Way assists greatly, and just approved funding for 2013-14. “That makes the difference between being able to charge the scale, the full rate, of dental services and being able to say the contributions from the patients are sufficient – the United Way makes up the difference (and) community contributions make up the difference,” Creba said. Signy Madden, United Way executive director, said the organization has supported the clinic for three years and it sees a lot of traffic. “People come from all around the area,” said Madden. “They’ll drive in, they’ll walk in and they sit there all day waiting to see the dentist and for many of them, it’s having a tooth pulled, they’ve got infections and they will never get to the dentist because they can’t afford it.” People that can’t afford it are getting dental services and thus avoiding unnecessary expenses, she said. “We’re keeping them out of emergency in the hospital, which is where people usually end up,” Madden said. By this time seven to eight other people from the RV convoy and other vehicles had joined in to help. The first firefighters from Nanaimo Fire Rescue Station No.4, A Platoon, arrived on scene minutes after the crash and controlled the fire as one of their team entered the motorhome and pulled Patterson’s father-in-law from the wreckage. “I’m actually really glad I had fire extinguishers because I think if I wasn’t on site first that thing would’ve went up,” Bayly said. Hydro cleans up after tree-fall blunder

to the site to saw the tree trunks into firewood lengths and grind down the stump to prevent the tree growing back. He has also been given vouchers to purchase new trees and advice from the arborist on what kinds of trees will be best for his application. Deleskie said B.C. Hydro remedied the situation, but believes the public should know what to do and who to call should a similar situation happen to anyone else. “They’ve come, they’ve responded,” Deleskie said. “So at least if it happens to other people they’ll know how to get in contact with somebody.”

Smell continues to rank as the No.1 concern in Lantzville’s urban agriculture debate. The District of Lantzville recently wrapped up public consultation on urban farming, geared at helping it consider new policies to allow people to sell what they grow on residential land. Early results of an online questionnaire and idea jam show people want to resolve the urban agriculture debate once and for all, but are still divided over whether the practice is best for residential neighbourhoods, said Meredith Seeton, Lantzville’s community planner. Potential smell from raw manure ranked as a top concern, followed by traffic and water quality. Seeton said residents seem to show support for limiting the application of raw manure and the district could consider using its nuisance bylaw to handle odour problems. “[Overall, the consultation] was really productive and a step towards healing as a community. People needed the extra opportunity to talk things through before being face-to-face with a potential bylaw,” Seeton said, adding that people worked together at a recent idea jam to mitigate potential negative impacts. “Some community members seemed to be saying, yes, it’s hard to completely eliminate all potential nuisance concerns and any risks associated with manure, but there are also long-term risks associated with not boosting local food production. Council will have to decide how to balance those risks and the various community perspectives.” Lantzville officials resurrected public debate on urban agriculture in June, as they agreed to consider allowing horticulture as a home-based business. The community has been grappling with ways to deal with urban farming since 2010, when the municipality and Compassion Farm went head-to-head over a commercial food operation. Jamie Wallace, spokesman for Friends of Urban Agriculture Lantzville Society, said the district’s zoning bylaw is outdated, handcuffing the community’s ability to sell surplus foods and start up non-traditional home-based businesses. Under the zoning bylaw it’s illegal for people to sell what they grow on residential lots. He said he applauds the latest efforts to collect public feedback and looks forward to seeing new policy options. “We are in favour of urban agriculture in residentially zoned areas, but the whole purpose of this is to see what the community wants,” he said. There have been 89 responses to online questionnaires and 40 people turned out to an agriculture jam Sept. 14 to give input on potential new policies. A report on public feedback collected this summer is anticipated near the end of September and proposed policies will be pitched next month. The urban farming review is expected to cost $5,000.

A Nanaimo homeowner will be filling a void left in his yard by a B.C. Hydro blunder. Jayson Deleskie and his family came back from holidays earlier this month to discover a maple tree had been cut down and left in chunks in their yard at the corner of Fifth Street and Bruce Avenue. “It didn’t make for a very good evening, coming home from a vacation to see it,” Deleskie said. The tree, which had sprouted into several trunks, provided shade and privacy to the home, located at a high traffic intersection in Harewood. Trunks had not been cut down to firewood lengths, but were left strewn in pieces a few metres long. Deleskie, who had not been contacted by B.C. Hydro warning the tree would be trimmed, had no idea who had cut it. The city knew nothing about it when he called, but it was a representative there who suggested he call a 1-800 customer service number at B.C. Hydro to voice his concerns. A B.C. Hydro arborist and utility specialist contacted Deleskie Wednesday, admitting B.C. Hydro was at fault since it was one of the utility’s subcontractors who went on the property and cut down the tree. “He was out of town when I called, so it was a couple of days before he could get back to me,” Deleskie said. If a tree threatening the operation or integrity of a power line is on public property or a road allowance, B.C. Hydro will proceed with trimming or cutting down a tree, but if the tree is on private property the utility has to contact the owner and make arrangements to proceed, which did not happen in this case. “It was a mistake by a contractor,” said Ted Olynyk, B.C. Hydro spokesman. Olynyk did not know why the contractor opted to cut down the entire tree instead of just trimming its branches, but it was likely a decision based on how the tree could impact power lines over the long term. “If we come to a situation where it looks like a tree will compromise the integrity of the line then we have to remove the tree,” he said. “It could

be a situation of years of trimming. We can’t just keep coming back. It’s a cost factor and maples do grow extremely fast. We found that a few years ago we had situations where maples were growing as much as six metres in a year.” B.C. Hydro also cannot remove wood from a tree cut on private property. “We don’t own the wood,” Olynyk said. “We’re not in the wood business. If a tree falls during a storm people shouldn’t just go assuming it’s on Crown land. That could very well be private property.” Deleskie said he was told B.C. Hydro contractors will be returning

Consumers deserve voice Recycling is a common activity in many Canadian municipalities and has been for some time now. Unfortunately, recycling programs cost money to run, in the form of salaries for the collectors, the vehicles, etc. These costs are borne by local governments and in turn by the residents by way of taxation. Nonetheless you would be hardpressed to find someone who complains about the cost of recycling, we all want to do our part. The one group not doing their part is the manufacturers of products, the products that come in packaging, the packaging that necessitates the establishment of recycling programs. The provincial government, in an effort to force participation by industry in the process, passed legislation requiring industry to establish a stewardship plan. In response, industry established the Multi Material B.C., a not-for-profit organization formed to take over recycling stewardship in British Columbia. The goal of the stewardship plan is to transfer the costs of recycling from government and taxpayers to industry and their consumers. Multi Material B.C. has a board of directors, made up of three representatives, to be exact. Two are from industry, and the third has previous ties to industry. This is pretty much like putting a vampire in charge of a blood bank. Where are the board members representing the other half of the equation: the consumers? With consumers still bearing the brunt of the costs to recycle packaging on the items they buy, people deserve to have a say in how that waste is collected, and present ideas on how to reduce packaging or increase recycling in the province, to multi-family residence. Let’s be clear – taxpayer equals consumer, so we’re still on the hook.

Tahltan earlier stopped one of the world’s largest corporations, Royal Dutch Shell, from fracking the area for coalbed methane gas. On Aug. 16, they issued Fortune Minerals an immediate eviction notice. As I write, the Tahltan have gathered at their usual hunting camp on Klappan Mountain to peacefully oppose the mining company, which began test-drilling earlier this summer, with the government’s approval. Tahltan First Nation members have been joined by non-aboriginal allies, such as the Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition. With the support of the wider community, which has brought food, water, firewood and other essentials, the Tahltan are vowing to stay on Mount Klappan until Fortune Minerals leaves the Sacred Headwaters for good. American poet Gary Snyder has been quoted as saying, “The most radical thing you can do is stay home.” The phrase has come to have many associations, most notably to describe a sense of place and the profound power of communities coming together to protect it. Snyder’s poetic description of what is a radical is an appropriate portrayal of the Tahltan’s peaceful defence of their home. The Tahltan’s presence in the Sacred Headwaters is ancient and deeply rooted and will not easily be removed. www.davidsuzuki.org

Nanaimo can do better with bike lanes To the Editor,

Re: Nanaimo fosters use of alternative transportation with bike lanes, Aug. 27. As an avid cyclist, both for cardio fitness on our many hills, and for nearly all my errands, I read with amusement about the city’s back clapping with the addition of a bike lane on Dover Road. Dover Road is a relatively short, straight wide road. Addition of a bike lane anywhere is always helpful, however this was not as necessary as improvements would be to some other very winding, far more busy,

and downright treacherous commuter roads, for example Hammond Bay Road. Having lived in Stephenson Point for 10 years I daily face travelling south or north on what is historically a cowpath, and remains a narrow, often winding, but ever increasingly busy traffic corridor. Some areas on this road have no shoulder and only limited, not elevated sidewalk, let alone any section of this road being marked as designated bike lane. Some areas a cyclist would quite literally have to throw themselves over a cement divider, or

City manager right person for job To the Editor.

Re: Manager draws on gridiron lessons, Sept. 19. Thank you for your profile regarding our new city manager, Ted Swabey. There is no doubt that this position can be incredibly difficult and has considerable weight of responsibility to staff and the public. No one should take this role without acknowledging that there will be numerous challenges. Like many others, I was concerned that the lead for city management came, once again, from within, and avoided a formal and open process of selection. There have been patterns developed over many years as to how the city has been run and some changes to this approach are necessary. I had the opportunity to meet with Swabey personally regarding the dams issue and came away thinking that he may be the right person at this time. His statements show a willingness to follow a different

path of management and accepting of alternatives that may present themselves. It has taken some courage on the part of our council and staff to reconsider and allow for the time to plan appropriately for Colliery Dams Park. With steady and calm

guidance, I am confident that we can get things right this time. Now, if the school board would be willing to follow this example and reconsider their proposed facilities plan, the city may be on the right track after all.

into a ditch or into thorny blackberries to avoid traffic coming too close. This road remains a thoroughfare for speeding traffic, often well above the 50km limit, a death threat for deer, and a constant challenge to ever-vigilant cyclists and pedestrians alike. Speed traps would help. Widening where possible would help, with additon of upgraded sidewalks and cyclist lanes where feasible. Meanwhile, living where I do, I face this challenge daily, and hope to live to tell the tale.

Re: Conspiracies fuel climate change denial, Sept. 10. Having seen condensation trails from jets that disappear as the jet continues to fly, when I see what I’ll call ‘chemtrails’ is when the condensation does not disappear, but continues to grow wider with a sort of scalloped edge on one side and stays in view as the whole trail moves across the sky. Where does the condensation come from to allow it to grow wider? I’ve always been an admirer of David Suzuki and I’m sure there is a scientific answer but meanwhile I’m totally confused. If indeed the atmosphere is somehow being seeded with chemicals, surely there must be a relatively easy way to test the fallout?

Teens offered movie night On Friday (Sept. 27) the United Way hosts the annual Starlight Galaxy Film Festival, an all-night movie event. High school students have Galaxy Cinemas to themselves to watch six different movies (50/50; Skyfall; This Means War; The Campaign; Pitch Perfect; Looper) from midnight to 6:30 a.m. to help raise money for United Way programs. There are 600 tickets available at $20 each and can be purchased through the Nanaimo high schools or at the United Way office. Tickets will be available at the door and can be purchased with cash or credit card only. Popcorn, pop and pizza are all included in the price of the ticket. Students under 14 years of age must ask a parent/guardian to sign the back of their ticket. No cell phones or electronic devices allowed. Students can ask any of the 30 volunteers to contact parents if they need to go home throughout the night. To purchase tickets and for additional information, please call the United Way office at 250-729-7400 or e-mail info@uwcnvi.ca. Because of the generosity of donors and volunteers, the United Way is able to support 53 charities and 60 programs in the central Island, the Comox Valley and Campbell River this year.

Songs reflect musician’s West Coast environment Montreal-born Vince Vaccaro has been calling the Canadian West Coast home for more than half his life and his music reflects a deep connection with the coast and surrounding environment, amidst time-inspired stories and songs. “The songs are about life, they’re about all the colours that exist out there. I’m experiencing the world around me and writing about it. My loves and passions are for the ocean, for the beauty of this place we live in, for so many things – its hard to sum it up.” Vaccaro has shared stages with great Canadian and international artists, but a recent stint in Australia with a real grassroots approach found him performing in small venues and even on the streets. It all starts somewhere, as they say. A songwriter, roots rocker, surfer, traveller, Vaccaro has always followed his heart in his music. Vaccaro plays an early show at the Queen’s Wednesday (Sept. 25). Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets $10/advance from the Queen’s or $15 at the door.

Unfinished art gets ‘upcycled’ during Culture Days Everyone has canvases they either didn’t finish or that didn’t turn out as hoped. Artists and community members will choose from these discarded canvases and upcycle them into new creations using whatever medium they choose during Upcycled Art on Sunday (Sept. 29), 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Start With Art Nanaimo. Anyone can bring the following between 9-10 a.m.: one or two unfinished or discarded canvases; brushes, sponges, paint, glue, art supplies for participants (no glitter); five to 10 found items for everyone to choose from to use in their creations. Participants are encouraged to bring their own brushes and supplies, music that inspire them and easy-to-eat food for a

potluck lunch. Participants select a canvas that inspires them and create a new piece from supplies in the room. At 1:45 p.m. there will be mini-exhibit of Upcycled Art. “This is such an exciting event; I’m not a visual artist but the thought of simply enhancing something is not intimidating in the least and I am looking forward to participating” said Sarah Schmidt, manager of the Nanaimo Arts Council. “This event is a wonderful take on the upcycling movement and is something that everyone can take part in as it doesn’t necessarily require mad painting or other artistic skills.” Pre-registration is not necessary. However, knowing who is participating, bringing canvases, supplies, food, etc., ahead of

time would be useful. More than 7,000 free activities will take place in an estimated 850 communities across Canada for the fourth annual Culture Days on Sept. 27-29. “Culture is an integral part of what makes our community so vibrant and we are very proud and excited to be participating again in Culture Days,” said John Collison-Baker, president of the arts council. “This annual event is an opportunity to publicly showcase the enormous talent and creativity that exists right here in Nanaimo.” Some of the events include: Artus Pocus Street Art, Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., downtown Nanaimo; Let’s Explore Improv, Friday, 4-5 p.m., Harbour Front Library; Youth Paint Out/Shout Out, Fri-

Clippers bitten by Grizzlies in opener I BCHL TEAM loses 3-2 to Victoria.

BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

The visitors spoiled the outcome of a closely contested hockey game on opening night. The Nanaimo Clippers were edged 3-2 by the Victoria Grizzlies on Friday at Frank Crane Arena. Nanaimo struck first, Vic answered with goals in the first, second and third periods, and then the home team got one back with six minutes left to make for an exciting finish. “A lot of ebbs and flow in our intensity and our emotion,” said Mike Vandekamp, Clippers coach. “It’s disappointing that it wasn’t more consistent for the full 60 minutes … The first game at home I think we had a lot of players playing to not make a mistake, versus going out and really taking charge of the game.” Scott Prier, Clip-

pers alternate captain, said his team didn’t come out tough enough. He said when the Clips got pucks deep and played their systems, things started to go their way. “We didn’t start doing that until the last 10 minutes,” he said. “If we do that

for 60 minutes, that game’s ours.” Jacob Hanlon scored the first goal of the fall at Frank Crane, trailing on a rush and getting a pass just outside the slot. Prier fired in a point shot on the power play. In between, exClippers forward

Gerry Fitzgerald did the damage, scoring the winning goal on a wraparound after assisting on his team’s first two goals. Shots finished 28-27 for the visitors, with Jayson Argue suffering the loss in net. The next night the

Shipmen travelled to play the Powell River Kings and lost 6-4. It was a game that the Clips led 4-2 early in the third period, but the Kings scored four unanswered to win. Bo Brauer scored twice for Nanaimo and Colton Dahlen and Spencer Hew-

son had the other goals. The Clippers were outshot 45-17, with Argue making 39 saves. GAME

V.I. Raiders on target, beat Rebels One team is ramping it up, the other is winding down, and the result was a big win for the V.I. Raiders. The Raiders beat the Westshore Rebels 54-14 on Saturday night at Victoria’s Bear Mountain Stadium. “Those types of games are big tests for us,” said Matthew (Snoop) Blokker, Raiders coach. “I was really proud with the effort of our guys and the focus of our guys.” It was the fifth-straight win for Nanaimo (6-2), whereas Victoria (1-7) has lost three straight and is seeing low roster numbers. The V.I. team raced to a 40-6 lead by halftime, as V.I. found success with both its rushing and its passing attack. Quarterback Jamie Ybarra set a new B.C. Football Conference record for completion percentage in a game, throwing 17-for-20 (85 per cent) for 341 yards and three touchdowns. Whitman Tomusiak had six catches for 109 yards and had one receiving touchdown and one puntreturn touchdown. Dylan Schrot had 137 receiving yards and a touchdown and Arthur Fabbro had two TD catches. Jahmari Bennett scored two rushing touchdowns. To read an expanded version of this article, visit www.nanaimobulletin.com.

Jim Kipp raises the arm of Les Varro, the longtime Nanaimo Boxing Club coach who was inducted into the Nanaimo Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday.

Nanaimo sports fans got a chance to say thanks for the memories. The Nanaimo Museum’s Sports Hall of Fame held its 2013 induction ceremony on Saturday, adding Margaret Fuller’s curling team, boxing coach Les Varro, field hockey player Sue (Reid) Schellinck and hockey player Gene Carr. Carr skated in 465 NHL games, mostly with the New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings, scoring 79 goals and 215 points. Jim Robertson

accepted the plaque, as his friend couldn’t attend the ceremony due to illness. “He had exceptional love and [it was] a driving force,” Robertson said. Schellinck, who represented Canada at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, gave a lively acceptance speech, saying she especially appreciated the opportunity to thank family. Varro, head coach of the Nanaimo Boxing Club for 34 years, was inducted as a builder. Nanaimo Coun. Jim Kipp donned his referee’s outfit so he could raise Varro’s arm. He noted that the coach’s efforts not only built

champions, but young men. “Some of those kids … would have been in trouble if it hadn’t have been for you,” Kipp told Varro. “A builder, a community man and an absolutely honourable person.” Fuller’s curling rink – the skip teamed with Pat Good, Sylvia Koster and Edna Quinney – won the 1957 Western Canadian championship. “Usually you don’t set out to try and prove anything in this world,” said Jim Koster, Sylvia’s son. “You fall into it, you’re fortunate, you were led the right way.” Look for more in an upcoming issue.

Vancouver Island University’s men’s and women’s soccer teams stayed in the thick of things in the standings with another win each on the weekend. The men’s Mariners defeated the Kwantlen Eagles 1-0 on Saturday at Merle Logan Field before falling 3-1 to the Douglas Royals the next day at Merle Logan. The women’s M’s lost 1-0 to Kwantlen before shutting out Douglas 2-0. Mateo Kostering scored the game winner the first day for VIU’s men. On Sunday, the home team came out strong

and Keegan Lang scored on a header to give his team the lead, but the Royals scored twice before halftime. The M’s were awarded a free kick late against the Royals and brought everyone up to press for the equalizer, but the Douglas keeper sent the play the other way and the visitors added some insurance. The Mariners women had their chances against the Eagles on Saturday, said coach Anup Kang in a press release, but Kwantlen’s keeper kept the home team off the scoreboard. On Sunday, the M’s women

found more success. Moira Brown got things started, scoring on a rebound off a corner kick. Jillian Kelly chipped the Royals keeper for a second-half goal. SOCCER TALK … To see a photo from Sunday’s women’s game, please visit www. nanaimobulletin.com … VIU’s soccer teams continue their homestand this coming weekend (Sept. 28-29) against UBCOkanagan and Thompson Rivers University, respectively. The women host UBC-O at 1 p.m. Saturday at Merle Logan Field with the men’s match to follow at 3 p.m.

MARY SPEARING July 16, 1914 – Winnipeg, MB to September 11, 2013 – Victoria, BC Our much loved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Mary Spearing, passed away peacefully in her 100th year on Wednesday, September 11, 2013. Mary’s childhood was spent on the prairies as her family moved from Manitoba to Saskatchewan and on to the family farm in Nestow, Alberta for her school years. Her memories from Nestow included hard winters, clearing land, making a log house a home, growing vegetables and grains, raising poultry and livestock, happy times with dear friends and picking delicious berries in the summers. She married Lawrence Spearing on August 7, 1935, and began a 78 year adventure in British Columbia, first in the West Kootenays, then in Nanaimo and then on the waterfront in Lantzville where Mary the prairie girl enjoyed swimming when the tide came in over the warm sand and rocks. Their last house and garden were back in Nanaimo. Mary was devoted to her family, and she was an active contributor to her community through the local Consumers Association, the Parent Teachers Association, the church, the Nanaimo Hospital Auxiliary, her much treasured sewing group, and her neighbours. She was always interested in other cultures and places, and travelled widely in North America, Europe, Russia, the Orient, and the South Pacific. Her caring nature for people and kindness to animals was renowned, and her love of flowers knew no bounds. Once her African violets took over every north facing window sill in the house, Lawrence built her a greenhouse which was soon filled with a kaleidoscope of more than 100 orchids leading to many friends in the Orchid Club and her prize winning new orchid that she named Mary’s Gold. After 64 years of marriage, Lawrence passed away in 2000 and Mary moved to Lakeside Gardens Seniors Residence in Nanaimo. She enjoyed the activities, tended her flower pots in their lovely gardens, and kept in touch with friends and family. Her final years were spent in Victoria, first at Glengarry Hospital and then at Mount St. Mary Hospital, where she benefited from daily family visits. We send special thanks to the wonderful staff at Mount St. Mary who welcomed and nurtured Mom with compassion, humour and a love of life, then embraced her with every kindness in her final days. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence; her son, David; and her grandson, Simon. She is survived by her daughter, Kathy (Richard Pratt); daughter-in-law, Dianne; sons, Bob (Janice), Les, Ted (Deb); 8 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren. A private family service will be held as Mary rejoins Lawrence, side by side, in a beautiful place overlooking their beloved ocean. Rest easy, your family loves you and we are lucky to have you watching over us.

Heritage building becomes home for technology company

REAL ESTATE Webmasters buys 223 Commercial. BY CHRIS BUSH THE NEWS BULLETIN

The old Daily Free Press building on Commercial Street will soon be looking like its old self thanks to a multimilliondollar makeover from its new owner. Real Estate Webmasters, a Nanaimo company that happens to be the world’s largest provider of custom real estate business websites, is combining its operations on Fourth Street and Terminal Avenue into one main building. The company has purchased the historical building at 223 Commercial St., which is being stripped down to its original brick facade and having a third storey added to create office space for 100 employees and ground floor retail space. Morgan Carey, president and CEO, founded Real Estate Webmasters in 2004. “I come from a search engine background, so I come from working

with Google and Yahoo and things of that nature since the turn of the century,” Carey said. “I ended up with a lot of customers in the real estate spaces in 2002, 2003. Everything at the time was based on a company called SEO Guy, so that was my moniker and everybody wanted to hire me. People wanted more than just help with search engines. They needed help with their websites, they needed help with their hosting, they needed help with everything so I saw an opportunity and took it.” The company has attracted thousands of customers – including realty franchises, brokerages, real estate teams and agents – about 80 per cent of which are in the U.S. and the remaining 20 per cent across Canada. In its last fiscal year the company boasted $6.5 million in revenue. The company employs about 70 people and $300,000 of its monthly payroll is directed into the Nanaimo economy. Rapid growth is why the company ended up working out of two buildings as demand for services rose faster than space became read-

existing markets rather than expansion into new markets. “There’s nothing new we have to expand into,”

Carey said. “We’ve been sold out ever since we started. Because we’re a service-based business, we sell labour – we have custom developers – so as soon as we staff another person they have work to do. We’re in a situation where we’re turning down work right now, so there’s no need to go into anything else.” The building is currently regaining its historical brick facade, but getting a modern metal internal framework to support the third floor addition. “We’re building a building inside a building to maintain the heritage significance of the building,” Carey said. “So we have this giant skeleton.” Carey said construction will hopefully be complete in March. Total cost for the renovation project and building purchase is just shy of $4 million. “We want to attract really high-level talent and in order to do that you need be able to look like you know what you’re doing,” Carey said. “When we’re segregated like this it doesn’t really give that impression of professionalism or organization, so we want to

make sure we have that premier spot.” Ironically, the building was originally constructed with a third floor. When a fire damaged the level in the 1930s it was demolished and the building was shortened to two storeys. The main floor fronting Commercial Street will be leased out as retail space. Carey said he’d like to have a higher end name brand retailer, such as Lululemon Athletica. Whichever retailer moves into the building, it will have to fit in with Carey’s overall goal of attracting high-salaried people into the downtown core. “I’d be quite happy to have someone like that come and take 2,500 square feet downstairs or something like that,” he said. “Some kind of store that isn’t a used book store or a dollar store, so that space is going to retail at quite a high price because it’s going to be brand new and we’re going to be quite selective with our tenants because we want to start getting people downtown.”

out that the city’s water-saving strategies have only focused on the residential sector, accounting for only about half of the total usage. We see real opportunities in the commercial and industrial sectors as well as retrofitting existing toilets (costing about $10 each for the parts) instead of replacing them. We believe that the city would get far more for its investment through other efficiency measures such as subsidising the use of drip irrigation systems (commercial and residential) than by building a new dam. The Regional District of Nanaimo’s WaterSmart water conservation team could be greatly expanded. Ultimately it is up to us, individually and collectively, to determine the financial and environmental costs of what we do with our limited air and water. u Ian Gartshore is chairman of the nonprofit Energy Solutions for Vancouver Island. www.esvi.ca

COFFEE BREAK events help caregivers find information, network.

There’s more than one way to lift spirits. For 82‐year‐old Nanaimo resident Joan Mayzes, it’s as simple as lifting a coffee pot. When Joan’s husband, Ken, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in the mid‐1990s, it marked the beginning of her decade‐long journey as a caregiver. It took time to come to terms with reality. At first, her four grown children weren’t quite sure what to make of their father’s condition. “They didn’t think there was anything wrong with Ken, like we all do,” Joan says. “We all deny.” But denial can only last so long and the symptoms became harder to ignore. Ken’s personality changed. The former carpet salesman would get frustrated, even angry. He didn’t like strangers in the house. “Emotionally, [caregiving] is a 24‐hour‐a‐day job,” she says. “My husband would get up at night and want to eat. He just didn’t know the difference between day and night.” Though her children helped a lot, Joan knew that she wouldn’t

be able to be Ken’s primary caregiver forever. Worse yet, if Joan herself were to get sick or injured, they’d be in trouble. After several years, the situation became untenable and the family knew it needed to move Ken into a full‐time care facility. There, his physical abilities began to escape him, too. “One day he fell down and they never got him up again,” Joan said. “He just forgot how to walk, so he was in a wheelchair or in bed for the last while. It was very difficult.” More than 70,000 British Columbians live with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, and in 2008 alone, B.C. caregivers provided an estimated 33.1 million hours of informal care. Most caregivers are family members – unpaid, untrained and underappreciated. For help, many caregivers turn to Alzheimer Society of B.C. support groups. Joan found strength in her community, and, since Ken’s passing, she’s made time to give back. Where she really shines is as one of the many volunteer hosts for CoffeeBreak throughout B.C. A CoffeeBreak is set for Nanaimo’s Origin at Longwood, 6205 Oliver Rd., on Wednesday (Sept. 26), 2:30-3:30 p.m. For more information, please visit www.alzheimerbc.org.

Stepping in front of the camera No longer just reporting on Tour de Rock, media members join the team Erin Haluschak, Daniel Palmer and Kyle Slavin Black Press

Jennifer Faerber knows firsthand the impact cancer can have on a child’s life. Faerber, who came to Canada from Australia three years ago to continue her radio career, battled non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma as a kid. She also had the opportunity to attend a camp in Australia similar to B.C.’s Camp Goodtimes, a summer camp for children who have gone through cancer. Faerber, one of four media riders on this year’s Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock team, says going from reporting on the Tour to being a part of the event has been a deeply rewarding experience. “When I first moved to Vancouver Island, Tour de Rock was one of the first stories I had to cover,” said Faerber, news director of Vista Radio’s Coast group of stations, based in Courtenay. “When you work in broadcasting, you talk a lot, but you don’t talk about yourself. I’ve had friends that didn’t really know what I went through.” Faerber said one of her motivating factors as a rider is to tell people “what it’s like when you are that kid with cancer.” She noted how grateful she is to

(Above left) Victoria-based Tour de Rock media riders Jillian van der Geest from KOOL FM and Joe Perkins of CTV News Vancouver Island, and (middle) Arnold Lim of Black Press, are joined by host and news director (right) Jennifer Faerber of Vista Radio’s Jet FM in Courtenay. have gone to a camp during her treatment, and wants to help kids who are currently battling cancer. “When we visited Camp Goodtimes, the kids cheer so loudly for you. I actually felt really comfortable there; I was one of those kids,” While the other three media riders on this year’s 21-person team haven’t experienced cancer the same way Faerber has, they all have their reasons to ride. Black Press media rider Arnold Lim, a father of two, says he thinks about his own kids whenever he gets on the bike. “When we went to Camp Goodtimes I met kids whose stories you don’t know completely, but you know they’ve been dealt some pretty bad cards. But they don’t look any different than my own kids,” he said. “They’re the same age as my kids, but they’ve gone through something that kids their age shouldn’t have to go through.” Lim, who prior to training hadn’t been on a bike for years, says he’s

motivated by those kids whenever he feels the aches and pains of cycling. “There isn’t a day that goes by where my thighs aren’t throbbing or my feet are hurting, but that’s nothing compared to the chemotherapy and the spinal taps that some kids have to go through,” Lim said. “I’m not in any position to complain.” CTV News Vancouver Island reporter and anchor Joe Perkins is grateful no children in his family have been affected by cancer, but he keeps in mind a close uncle who died from lung cancer. “He never smoked a day in his life,” Perkins said. He draws his motivation from his junior rider, Luke Savage, a 17-yearold Grade 12 student at Belmont secondary. “Luke had three jobs this summer, worked seven days a week, knows he wants to be an electrician, he’s finishing up his Grade 12 year, and he’s in remission. … For me, that’s pretty inspiring.”

The close-knit camaraderie amongst this year’s riders and Tour de Rock team also took Perkins by surprise. “I knew it would be special, I didn’t think it would be this special,” he said. “And that’s me saying this before we’ve even left. … I can’t wait to see the Island.” Jillian van der Geest, an on-air host with KOOL FM, has witnessed the impact cancer has on a family whose child is battling the disease. Caleb, the son of a family friend, was diagnosed with a brain tumour at eight years old, and died two years later. “I spent a lot of time with his family, from diagnosis to his death, and it’s heart-wrenching and inspiring to watch a family go through that. All they wanted to do was talk about it and have good times with him,” van der Geest said. “It was a unique experience for me to be there and help the family when I could, but ultimately how can you help with something like that? For me, Tour de Rock – this is me trying to help.”
