convicted in February 2012, following a 2009 undercover “reverse sting” operation in Abbotsford, which in-
volved the use of a police agent who negotiated with Bacon, using Scott – the maternal grandfather of Bacon’s young son – as the middleman, to purchase 100 kilograms of cocaine purportedly being smuggled from Mexico. Arrangements had been made for the purchase of the first 10 kg for $300,000, with the remainder to be bought 10 kg at a time. The operation was halted by police before any money or drugs changed hands. The Crown had asked the sentencing judge, Austin Cullen, to consider drug importation sentences when determining Bacon’s sentence, but Cullen concluded it would not be appropriate to do so.

Crimes that involved hacking into pop superstar Carly Rae Jepsen’s email and social media accounts were easy to commit, but had “farreaching consequences,” a provincial court judge said Friday in Abbotsford provincial court. Judge Jill Rounthwaite sentenced hacker Christopher David Long, 25, of Abbotsford to a four-month conditional sentence (house arrest) and one year of probation for the two offences to which he pleaded guilty – mischief to data and possession of stolen property. Rounthwaite said it was challenging to come up with a sentence, because this was the first case of its kind in Canada. Rounthwaite accepted Crown lawyer Rob Macgowan’s recommendation of four months’ house arrest. At Long’s sentencing hearing last Friday, defence lawyer Martin Finch had asked the judge to consider a conditional discharge. The court heard that Long began hacking into Jepsen’s email and social media accounts in March 2012, when she and then-boyfriend Jordi Ashworth were living together in Vancouver. Long changed passwords, posted vulgar messages, made veiled threats to Ashworth, and downloaded material that included Jepsen’s recording contract, tour schedule, videos, two song recordings and several photos, including two that were “sensitive and highly personal.” Long sent those two pictures to celebrity gossip website TMZ, suggesting possibly selling them.

Long also contacted a phone company to have Jepsen’s cellphone number changed, resulting in her being unable to make or receive calls while she was on tour. The incidents were reported to the Vancouver Police Department, which investigated the matter. Long surrendered to police in December 2012. Rounthwaite said Long’s actions were invasive and created fear and anxiety for Ashworth and Jepsen. “There’s no doubt that the offences had a significant impact on (the two),” she said. Ashworth was in attendance at the ruling. Speaking outside the courthouse, he said he was happy with the sentence and relieved that the matter was over. “It was difficult. It still is. There’s a lot of emotion involved in this, a lot of pain. It was scary to leave your house and wonder who’s out there,” he said. Ashworth said he felt like he was being bullied by Long, and he wants this case to provide a broader message than just the impacts of Internet hacking or celebrity stalking. “This spreads far, far greater than that – to children in schools and people in their workplaces and same-sex marriage. There’s bullying of all sorts.” Conditions of Long’s house arrest include that he not use a computer or other electronic device to access the Internet, except for work or school purposes. He is also prohibited from attending any of Jepsen’s performances and from selling or distributing any material – including photos and videos – related to her. Long is permitted to leave his home only for work, school, medical emergencies and reasons approved by his supervisor.

Other Hand It’s been years since I mounted a radar detector on the windshield. It’s not like my driving has become more mellow with time, I just figure I get passed by so many others I might as well let them run tackle with the cops. I bought the unit primarily to prevent me from being ticketed on Highway 97 rolling back and forth between Quesnel, and for my occasional cruises over the Coquihalla. Not that I was driving at excessive speed, but for the most part 97-North is relatively straight and in great condition. It also carries a low volume of traffic … not a lonely road but one where usually the hazards are errant wildlife rather than other cars and trucks. With those favourable conditions, it’s easy to exceed the often low-posted speed,
thus the potential for a gold mine in traffic tickets. Highway 3, for much of its distance four lanes, is also less-travelled, at least outside the summer-vacation peak. Yet it too is posted with speed limits far below the drivability of the road. The Coq, which has our highest posted limits at 110 km/h, is heavily travelled, but is a route that begs for higher limits when it’s bare and dry. I will admit to abusing those limits on occasion (see reason for radar detector above), though not as bad as the Viper driver who wailed by me, only to be seen stopped by a cop a couple of miles further on. A few minutes and miles later, he flashed past me again and sure enough, with my detector beeping away, he was back on the side of the road with another cop. This obviously was back in the day before just one ticket left you standing on the shoulder, watching your car being hauled away on the back of a wrecker. I can just imagine the pain being caught en route to a week in the woods, seeing my truck, trailer, camping gear and hunting
paraphernalia impounded (and possibly lost) for exceeding an 80 k speed limit on a road and in a vehicle, capable of handling 20 or 30 k more. Not only are you heavily fined, there are towing, impoundment and storage fees (hey, everyone gets to take advantage),

That is why, with a great “It’s about time” sigh, that I read last week of new Transportation Minister Todd Stone an-
nouncing he has ordered a review of highway speed limits with an eye to, thank God, raising them on many routes. B.C. taxpayers pay vast sums to build, improve and maintain roads to Autobahn standards, yet we face speed limits on them more appropriate to congested city streets. Since Stone’s announcement, a group called Sense BC has released video, now gone viral, called “Speed Kills Your Pocketbook.” Check it out. The point – mine, that of Sense BC and of, I assume, the Minister – is that our roads, our vehicles and the ability of most drivers are capable of handling, where it’s safe, higher speed limits. It is not only about time, it makes sense. A drive on any of our major routes – the Coq, 97, and even the No. 1 through the Valley – demonstrates that people not only can safely drive faster, they do, all the time. If higher speeds work safely on the I-5 and other U.S. freeways, then why not here? markrushton@abbynews.com

Homeless were ‘just moved’ on
When we read that the city moved the homeless because of health and safety concerns one might think, that’s nice, now they’ve moved them somewhere healthier and safer. But no, they just moved them on. But I noticed that they are back, probably because they have nowhere else to go. It’s funny how society can admire the successful. Those with their manicured acreage that they dump tonnes of beautifying toxic chemicals on each year when those less fortunate that have no shelter, and 10 or so might occupy 1,000 square feet of city property and maybe they spread around a little human organic waste, but they become the vilified ones. And I’m sure that there are those that wish they would just go away somewhere and die. With help though, who knows what some of the homeless might aspire too. There is a world renowned author, Neal Donald Walsch, who was once homeless in Ashland, Oregon. But in Ashland the city had some property for the homeless to pitch a tent on and provided washroom facilities. Gary Huntbatch

Robbery charges An 18-year-old Langley man has been charged in relation to a robbery last Monday (Sept. 9) at a gas station in Abbotsford. Abbotsford Police were called just after 10 p.m. that day for a reported holdup in the 28700 block of Fraser Highway. The suspect, carrying a handgun, entered the store and demanded cash from two employees, ages 22 and 67. When he was told the cash could not be accessed, the culprit demanded cigarettes, and quickly fled in a waiting vehicle. Const. Ian MacDonald said detailed witness accounts from people who noticed suspicious activity at the gas station were integral in leading police to the suspect. Lorren Willson-Lewis Marks has now been charged with robbery and the use of an imitation firearm in the commission of an offence.

The man whose body was discovered in downtown Abbotsford on the morning of Monday, Sept. 9 has been identified. Const. Ian MacDonald said police are not releasing the name of the 31-year-old Abbotsford resident, but he was an “upstanding citizen” with strong family connections. Police are still waiting for results of the autopsy to determine the cause of death, but it appears foul play was not involved. The man’s body was discovered by a man and a woman at about 1:45 a.m. in the 2500 block of West Railway Street. The woman believed she had a brief conversation with the man in the area of South Fraser Way and Montvue Avenue a few hours earlier. MacDonald said police believe the deceased man had driven his vehicle into the downtown core and parked it. They are still trying to determine who he might have come in contact with in the hours before his death. Photos that police released of the man’s tattoos helped lead to his identification, MacDonald said. Now a North Vancouver building company that bears his name brings that same attention to detail and zeal for perfection to every project. Mark Cooper, president of Shakespeare Homes, cites a recent full-house renovation as the perfect example of the work the company does. As a North Vancouver resident himself, Cooper says he and his team love working in
the community in which they live and are very familiar with the building restrictions that make North Vancouver and West Vancouver different. The original home was built in the early 1960s, and it looked it. It had two storeys, no space for a garage and just didn’t work for the family. However, it was located on a seriously beautiful piece of property, backing onto a creek and with tons of natural greenery surrounding it. It was time to make the house match its surroundings. One of the homeowners had grown up in a heritage home and had dreamed of living
in a similar place as an adult. So, he brought in Cooper and his team to make his dream a reality. “This was a great opportunity for the homeowners and my people to express themselves,â€? Cooper says. “We didn’t just construct something that looks like it’s from the 1800s, we actually built the home like it would have been then, while meeting today’s building codes and ensuring energy efďŹ ciency.â€? Working with Cooper’s team of professionals, including Susanne Doise of Sensitive Design,

All of these colours are ones they see continuing into the winter season as well. Gathering your own leaves to decorate the Thanksgiving table can be a great activity for kids and adults alike. Hitting your local park and choosing the perfect leaves to make a centrepiece (perhaps mixed with some feathers, chestnuts or acorns) can become a family tradition. Just make sure to give them a rinse ďŹ rst to remove any bugs or dirt. Another great idea for the kids is to unroll a length of butcher paper on the table, provide some coloured pencils or crayons, and let them go to town making a tablecloth or placemats. The grocery store can also be a good source for decorations, including fall owers (your local market will be able to advise on what’s growing in your area), pumpkins and other gourds. “We’re also seeing unique one-of-a-kind decor as a hit this fall,â€? says Beatty. “Each piece tells its own story while being part of the bigger style story in the room.â€? If you’re looking for something a bit more time-consuming, consider taking some tissue paper in your favourite fall colours, wrapping clear glass vases or candleholders and securing the edges of the paper with clear tape to make an elegant addition to your tables or ďŹ replace mantel. Whatever your style or budget, decorating for Thanksgiving doesn’t need to be complicated. A bit of creativity and some inspiration goes a long way towards making your home glow. Perhaps you’ll become your neighbourhood Martha Stewart!

Long gone are the days of onesize-ďŹ ts-all kitchen countertops, with your only choice being the colour. Now you can ďŹ nd a wide range of countertop materials and colours to suit your style and budget. Perhaps the most well-known countertop product is laminate. It comes in a huge variety of colours and ďŹ nishes, and it can be one of the more inexpensive materials, making it a great choice for those on a tighter budget. Another popular countertop right now is quartz, which is one of the hardest minerals in the world. “Because of its durability, consistency and beauty, quartz has really become a popular choice for renovators,â€? says Shaun Krahn, general manager for Kitchen Craft Cabinetry. give you advice on sealing your countertops. An engineered stone countertop come in a larger variety of colours than a natural stone material, and is also a bit more hardy. If your countertops might need to take some abuse, an engineered stone will stand up better than the natural options. It must be oiled frequently to seal the surface and prevent staining, but any scratches can be sanded out and wood is very easy to clean. Another recent innovation is concrete countertops, which look great in an industrial-chic environment. Concrete comes in a variety of ďŹ nishes, so it’s easy to customize what you would like it to look like. However, concrete also has to be sealed as it can
easily be stained or warped. The ďŹ nal popular style of countertop is solid surface, which is an acrylic product that is non-porous and easily customizable with inlays, seamless backsplashes and integral sinks. However, solid surface countertops cannot withstand high heat and can be scorched or burned. However, one of the biggest considerations when looking to do any renovation is your budget. Are you able to splash out on something high-end and gorgeous, or are you looking for something a bit more inexpensive? Setting a budget should be one of the ďŹ rst things you do before you start looking at materials. As with all renovations, it’s best to get the advice of a professional before making decisions about changing your countertop.

Everyone has heard the adage “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” This has never been more true with the recent trend to “upcycle”, or turn something that may no longer be useful into something new. “Upcycling is the act of taking an unused item and literally turning it into an item you will use,” says Amber Bosma, marketing manager

The Abbotsford Pilots' first game of the regular season was a hit, but the sequel was a bit of a dud. On Thursday, the local junior B hockey club hit the road to take on the Richmond Sockeyes in a match-up of the last two teams to win the Western Canadian title. Abbotsford won the Keystone Cup in 2012, and Richmond followed in their footsteps last spring. The Pilots ended up grinding out a dramatic 2-1 overtime triumph. Olympic champ Martin heads lineup for Abbotsford’s Grand Slam curling event The Masters Grand Slam of Curling, to be held at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre next month, will feature a star-studded lineup. 2010 Olympic gold medalist Kevin Martin headlines the list of high-profile rinks released Monday, which includes all 12 men’s and women’s teams who have qualified for the Canadian Olympic Trials in December. Along with Martin,
the men’s draw will feature Canadian Olympic hopefuls Glenn Howard, Jeff Stoughton, Kevin Koe, Mike McEwen and John Epping, along with several European rinks including 2013 world champion Niklas Edin of Sweden and Norwegian
Stefanie Lawton, Sherry Middaugh and Chelsea Carey. 2010 Olympic bronze medalist Bingyu Wang of China and 2013 world champion Eve Muirhead of Scotland are also in the field. In all, 30 teams will be in Abbotsford to com-
pete in the round robinstyle bonspiel, which runs Oct. 29 to Nov. 3 and offers a $200,000 prize purse. The opening ceremonies run Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. and will feature the MEI Screaming Eagles marching band.
The spiel will then kick off with an evening draw, featuring Martin, McEwen, Jones and Nedohin, among others. Single draw ticket prices start at $15 with single day passes starting at $40 and weekend passes at $80. Tickets

Cascades grind out points on road
The University of the Fraser Valley soccer teams posted mixed results on the road this past weekend. The Cascades men endured a grueling eastern trip, taking on the Winnipeg Wesmen on Thursday and then heading back to Calgary to face the Mount Royal Cougars on Saturday. The Wesmen handed UFV a 1-0 loss, with Miguel Fictoria's firsthalf goal standing up as the winner despite the Cascades out-shooting the hosts. UFV bounced back for a 2-0 win at Mount Royal, evening their record at 2-2-0. Ryan Liddiard and Kree Byrne scored, while Mark Village posted the shutout. Q The Cascades women took on local rivals UBC and Trinity Western. UFV battled the T-Birds to a 1-1 draw on Friday, with Tristan Corneil's goal just before the end of the first half putting them in front. UBC's Madison guy notched the equalizer in the 82nd minute. On Saturday, the Cascades dropped a 2-1 decision to TWU. The Spartans built a two-goal lead in the first half, and kept UFV off the board until the 90th minute, when Lana Rockhill scored. Rookie midfielder Carley Radomski picked up player of the game honours in both games for the Cascades, who sit at 1-1-1 on the season. Q This weekend, the UFV men take their turn playing the Lower Mainland squads, visiting UBC on Friday and TWU on Saturday. The women hit the road to face the Alberta Pandas on Saturday and Mount Royal on Sunday.

BOHNKE, Bessie Fannie March 23, 1918 to September 6, 2013 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Bessie Fannie Bohnke (nee Kendrick), on September 6, 2013, in Langley, BC, at the age of 95 years. Predeceased by her husband Fred, daughter Mona, son Bob, grandsons Bob and Brian, and siblings Olive, Norman, Cecil, Cecilia, and Ken. She is survived by her daughter Sherry (Bill) Mortland of Rycroft, AB, daughter Esther (Lyle) Thomas of Aldergrove, BC and son Len (Linda) Bohnke of Grande Prairie, AB. Also survived by siblings Sam, Kay and Dennis. Grandma will be lovingly remembered by her family including 19 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandson. The family would like to thank Dr. MacIntosh, Carrie Murphy, NP and the staff at Cedar Hill for their kindness. A private family service will be held at a later date.
ISAAK Marian Dorothy Marian passed away peacefully and happily on Monday, September 9, 2013. In her last waking moments she was with her daughter and grandsons; her last words were “I love you so much.” She leaves behind a husband of 54 years, Ernie; a son and daughter-in-law, Glen and Rita, a daughter Dianne and four grandsons: Matthew, Marc, Luc and John. A celebration of life will be held at the Cottage Pavilion, where she resided, at 10:30 am on Saturday, September 21st.
Donna Mae Gerbrandt passed away peacefully on September 12, 2013, at the age of 69 years, with loved ones at her side. She will be greatly missed by her daughters Fay (John) and Denise, her grandchildren, Jonathan and JamieLee (Heather), and her great grandchildren. She will also be missed by her brother Reginald (Shirley) and her sister-in-law, Beverley, along with many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father Jacob, mother Esther, her brother James, her sister Darlene Ann, and sister-in-law Marjorie. Donna was born in Rosthern, SK, on January 14, 1944 and moved to Steinbach, MB with her family in 1946 where she spent her childhood years. She married Gilbert Gerbrandt in April of 1962. For the last 22 years she has lived in residential care at the Dr. Hogg Pavilion - Peach Arch Hospital, in White Rock BC, as she struggled with Multiple Sclerosis. Never a complainer, Donna frequently expressed thanks for the many blessings God had given her, particularly her family and friends. With what she had, she blessed others including several Mission organizations. She liked to keep her money in the refrigerator, calling it her “cold, hard, cash.” Her determination to memorize long passages of Scripture helped her in her daily life and she was usually ready with an appropriate verse to offer in any situation, always remembering the exact reference. Donna was also a gifted pianist and poet. In 2004, she won an award for a limerick she’d written called “A Word to the Wise or Otherwise.” We would like to express our sincere thanks to the staff at the Dr. Hogg Pavilion who cared for her over the years. It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Tom on September 1, 2013 at his home in Abbotsford, BC. Tom will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Chelsey and Amanda, his sisters, Luellen (Kaighn), Karon (Gray), Mille (Grosman) and Ginny (Cahill).There will be a Celebration of Life held at Carnoustie Golf Course in Port Coquitlam on Sunday, October 13, 2013 from 2:00 5:00 pm. “Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near; still loved, still missed and very dear.”
Sadly, John Kai passed away quietly at Mission Hospice on September 9th, after a very brief battle with cancer. He was 62 years old. John is survived by his loving wife, Wilma, their three daughters, Dodie (Ron), Lisa (Derek) and Amanda, his six grandchildren; Ester, Austin & Dawson, Aceia, Pella and Zayva. He is also survived by three sisters, seven brothers, and a large extended loving family. John was a Journeyman Ironworker by trade and also an accomplished sign painter. He recently retired and spent his time with several building projects and gardening. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, September 19, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Henderson’s Funeral Home, 34537 Marshall Road, Abbotsford, BC. Elizabeth passed peacefully on August 10, 2013 at Hilton Villa, Surrey, BC. She was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Angus and Esther Hay and lived many years in Winnipegosis until she moved to BC in 1974 to pursue a teaching career. She spent many years teaching in McBride and retired to Surrey and then Abbotsford. Betty received her Bachelor of Arts (1975) and B. Education (1977) from the University of Manitoba and was a firm believer that every child deserved a quality education. Betty was also a long standing member (over 65 years) of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Canadian Legion. Predeceased by her husband Albert “Bob” Morris; 3 brothers and her son-in-law. Lovingly remembered by her seven children, 17 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, one greatgreat granddaughter and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, September 20 at 11 am at St Andrew’s-Newton Presbyterian Church, 7147 124th Street, Surrey, BC. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Josephine (Jodie) Roberts on September 6, 2013. Jodie was pre-deceased by her husband Edwin (Ed), six brothers: Mike, Alex, Peter, Orest, Walter and Roman, her two sisters: Julia and Annie. She is survived by her daughter Dorothy (Jerry), her son Russel (Kim), grandchildren: Daphne and James, great grandchildren: Reina, Colton, Haleigh, Shaelyn, and Ariana. Jodie was born in Vilna, Alberta and came to BC in her late teens. She married Ed in 1950, had her children in the lower mainland then they moved to Williams Lake in 1958. After they both retired, Jodie and Ed moved to Abbotsford. They loved traveling in their motor home. After Ed’s passing, Jodie became hooked on cruising and took several over the years. She loved going to the Caribbean. She and her best friend Claire (from her late teen years) took one of her most memorable trips to Europe and the Mediterranean, then spent a week going down the Nile on a barge to the pyramids. Jodie was President of the Abbotsford Seniors Association, now known as the Abbotsford Social Activity Association for several years and was dedicated to that organization. After a short fight with cancer, she passed peacefully in her sleep at the Christine Morrison Hospice in Mission. There will be a Celebration of Life Service on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 1:30 pm at the Abbotsford Social Activity Association Building at: 33889 Essendene in Abbotsford. Qualifications: • University graduation in a related discipline. Minimum bachelor’s degree. Master’s an asset. • Minimum 5 years leadership experience, preferably in a non-profit setting and/or as an Executive Director. • Experience in grant/proposal writing, and proven track record of success in approvals. • Solid understanding of how to read, interpret and prepare financial statements. • Advanced computer skills relating to MS Office, website management and social media.
