Carly Rae’s hacker made life ‘scary’

The former boyfriend of Carly Rae Jepsen said he and the pop superstar lived in fear when they discovered that someone had hacked her email and social media accounts and gained access to materials that included two “highly personal” photos.
“It was scary. It was really scary,” said Jordi Ashworth of the incidents that occurred in early 2012. Ashworth was present at Abbotsford provincial court on Friday, when the sentencing hearing was held for Christopher David Long, 25. Long pleaded guilty in May of this year to possession of stolen property and mischief to data.

At Friday’s hearing, Crown counsel Rob Macgowan recommended Long serve a four-month conditional sentence (house arrest) followed by one year probation. Lilee-Jean Putt, the little girl who captured the hearts of thousands in the Fraser Valley and beyond, succumbed to brain cancer Friday. According to a statement made by the family on the Love for Lilee Facebook page, the two-year-old died in her mom Chelsey Whittle’s arms, while her dad Andrew Putt, of the band Pardon My Striptease, played his guitar. “It is with broken hearts we make this post … as of 5:25 p.m., our princess Lilee-Jean Frances Putt, our angel
here on earth, is now looking down on us from heaven,” read the statement. The man involved in a six-and-a-halfhour standoff with police on Wednesday in Abbotsford was the subject of a public warning last month in Chilliwack after breaching his bail conditions. On Aug. 6, RCMP issued a public notice that Bernard William David Barton, 37, could be armed and dangerous. He had failed to turn up at a treatment centre in Chiliwack where he was to reside as part of his bail conditions. Barton had been on the lam since then, and was wanted on three warrants – two for breach and one for allegedly stealing a vehicle. His long criminal history also includes serving a 14-year sentence for his involvement in a 1998 botched home invasion that resulted in the death of Ted Charles Green of Abbotsford. Barton and co-accused Frank Joseph Federici invaded Green’s home – located on Downes Road in Abbotsford – on Halloween 1998. Federici carried a knife and Barton was armed with a sawed-off rifle. A fight ensued with Green, and he was stabbed 11 times, while his common-law wife witnessed the struggle.

to 400 feet away from the scene to sneeze and cough from the chemical. A short while later, three more rounds of tear gas were fired, but Barton still did not surrender. Once it was determined that Barton had moved into the attic, police fired pepper spray into the space, resulting in him surrendering at about 6:30 p.m. Barton was taken from the home in handcuffs and treated for the effects of the tear gas and pepper spray. His mugshot distributed by police last month showed him with dark hair, but he was sporting dyed blonde hair on Wednesday. MacDonald said some people might question why the standoff took so long to resolve. “If it takes six hours and everyone comes away unharmed, then that was a successful operation,” he said. According to the provincial court database, Barton’s criminal history dates back to 1995 and includes convictions for assault causing bodily harm, possession of stolen property, uttering threats and mischief. He is next scheduled to appear in Abbotsford provincial court on Oct. 7.

While full details have not yet been determined, a service for Lilee-Jean will be held on Sept. 28, either in Chilliwack or Abbotsford. The service will be open to the public. As China raises its standards for recyclables shipped from North America, Abbotsford and Mission will likely pay to allow a local recycling depot to upgrade its processing lines. The two communities own the Abbotsford Mission Recycling Depot (AMRD) – operated by Abbotsford Community Service (ACS). The site sorts mixed recyclables and sells the separated materials to recycling markets – generating about $1.8 million a year. A report for Abbotsford and Mission city staff states that all of western North America’s mixed paper is sent to China for recycling. Earlier this year, China’s recycling markets decreased the acceptable contamination limits of recyclables from 10 per cent to 1.5 per cent. A report to Abbotsford council states that if contaminated paper is received, fines could be as high as $20,000, plus costs for the return of contaminated bales – about $20,000 per bale. China could also refuse further shipments from organizations that send contaminated product. China sent inspectors to the AMRD in August and advised workers that inspections may occur weekly. AMRD passed the inspections, but needed extra staff to do additional manual sorting. The extra shift increased the monthly cost of the processing from $53,000 to $87,000. Instead of continuing to use extra staff, ACS proposed to re-align the processing method. The upfront cost would be $80,000 for equipment and modifications, but would have a processing line cost of $60,000, which staff say would pay for itself in a period of slightly less that three months. Mission council has already approved the costs, of which that community will pay $16,000.

At the time of the offences, Jepsen – originally from Mission – and Ashworth were living together in Vancouver. Ashworth, who often monitored Jepsen’s social media and email accounts at her request, discovered that some of the passwords had been changed in early March 2012. Vulgar postings were made on Jepsen’s Facebook and Instagram accounts. On March 22, Jepsen, who was on tour, discovered she could no longer make or receive calls on her cellphone, and she received a series of calls from a blocked number. The worried couple reported the issues to the Vancouver Police Department, which launched a four-month investigation. This included Ashworth communicating via email with the then-unknown hacker. In one exchange, the hacker wrote, “Stop trying to take this account back. I am extremely capable of doing many things so leave it at that.â€? Police were able to trace the sender’s IP address to Long’s residence in Abbotsford. He then confessed to police. It was determined that Long registered an email account that had previously been u used by Jepsen but was inactive. He E R O M INE then used that account to gain access ONLws.com to her current email and password, abbyne which led to him accessing the passw words to her social media sites, including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Long downloaded material from Jepsen’s email account that included her recording contract, tour schedule, two song recordings and several photos, including two between her and Ashworth that were of a “sensitive and highly personal nature,â€? according to Macgowan. Long sent the two photos to TMZ – a celebrity gossip website and television series – suggesting possibly selling them. He also contacted a phone company to have Jepsen’s cellphone number changed. Macgowan said Jepsen and Ashworth lived in fear because they did not know whether the hacker intended to harm them or to damage Jepsen’s career. “(The) sense of violation and invasion of privacy ‌ cannot be understated,â€? Macgowan said. Long apologized in court, and Finch acknowledged his client exercised poor judgment in his actions, and said they arose “out of stupid hijinks among friends.â€? He said Long, a sales manager at a car dealership, got caught up in the “prankâ€? and the fascination of dealing with a celebrity.

Other Hand The recent media frenzy over a hockey player killing a grizzly bear for trophy purposes, taking the head and hide while leaving the carcass, needs to be put somewhat into perspective. Grizzly bears are shot only for trophy purposes. Their meat is, at least for human consumption, generally inedible. For natural scavengers, however, the abandoned carcass is a veritable buffet. You will note that I did not use the word “hunting” in the above, simply because I believe zipping in and out of coastal estuaries in an inflatable boat, looking for grazing grizzlies isn’t so much hunting as it is high-speed cruising for opportunity. Hunting should be ‘fair chase,’ in that you have to work for what you kill. “Hunting” by
boat or other vehicle, fairly rapidly roaming vast areas with great sight lines is not hunting so much as it is shooting sitting ducks. Clouding what has become a debacle over this grizzly kill is that a First Nations person claimed the animal was his “friend” and he’d even given it a name. Anyone who claims grizzlies are friendly, and intimate they are almost tame, is out of touch with reality. In fact, what they are doing by supposedly interacting with these wild animals is to habituate them to human contact, and with hunting of them still permissible, makes them extremely vulnerable to human predation. But this isn’t about the niceties or vulnerability of bears so much as it is about hunting ethics. If one is to hunt such an animal, then he/she should walk to the area as did the bear, risking contact rather than safely shooting them from a boat, or the beach delivered by boat. The same, with another vehicle, can be said of moose hunting in the Cariboo. Thanks to vast tracts of clear-cut, laced with access roads, created by “salvage logging” to take advantage of pine-beetle infested forests,
instead of the moose population growing through the bounty of new browse, they are being decimated. Huge clear-cuts, where moose like to nibble on new willow and poplar growth, open up sight lines for predators – both wolf and human. Instead of following their noses,

So it seems can humans, particularly with scope-sighted rifles that allow success from beside a pickup truck a half a mile away. The problem, however, is not so much with the hunter who holds a limited entry permit during hunting season – the kill rates on those are strictly controlled.
The problem is poaching and, as I have recently read, First Nations “sustenance hunters” who are killing bulls, cows and calves year round. Natives are permitted by law to do that – to take as much as they want, as often as they want, no matter the time of year. When the land was covered by forest, the animals usually found in hard-to-access moose meadows or old, deactivated clearcuts, that type of liberal hunting opportunity might be sustainable. In the open and accessible vastness that is much of backcountry Cariboo, that is no longer the case. Moose populations are only 30 or 40 per cent of what they were a few years ago, and the rapid decline continues. If there is to be consideration of banning or restricting trophy hunting of great bears, perhaps government also needs to work with First Nations to ensure there is a sustainable hunting program for moose – sustenance or otherwise. Without some action soon this iconic animal may be extirpated for generations in central British Columbia. markrushton@abbynews.com

Irresponsible littering in park I often walk in Hougen Park and I would like to commend the parks branch for the excellent job they do in maintaining the area, keeping it clean and tidy. My reason for writing this is directed at the irresponsible people who litter the park. Over the spring and summer, I have witnessed a number of items dumped on the park grounds for the park to pick up and dispose of. These articles consist of a rusted barbecue; seven or eight boxes of cut up wood, possibly from a torn down fence; and a number of boxes of cardboard, just to name a few. The last straw came yesterday morning when there dumped by the garbage can, was a toilet. Yes, a toilet and its tank. I don’t get it. He said the traffic unit found “more speeders than we would want to find.” Lucy said police want to stress to drivers to be alert, watch for pedestrians and do not use electronic devices. “We want this community to be really safe … when it comes to things like school zones, please pay attention to how you’re driving.”

Investigators determined the tips had allegedly been made by 38-year-old Donald George Campbell of Abbotsford. MacDonald said each of the tips demanded a response and caused stress for many people working for the targeted businesses and living in the various residential areas described. The major crime unit took over the investigation once it was suspected that the tips were false, resulting in the arrest and charge of Campbell. He now faces three counts of public mischief and one count of conveying a message to alarm.

While serving on the foundation, he was part of the Friends of UCFV, a community group that lobbied successfully for university status for the former university-college.
UFV’s Board of Governors includes members appointed by government and elected faculty, staff, and students. The board governs the management, administration, and control of the property, revenue, and business of the university. Serving with Delaney are board members Stacey Irwin (first vice-chair), Randy Bartsch (second vice-chair), Angela R. Delaney is SVP of business development at First West, which oversees Envision Financial in the Fraser Valley, Valley First in the Okanagan, Similkameen and Thompson valleys, and Enderby & District Financial. He holds an MBA from Queen’s University, and a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Calgary. He is a retired commissioned officer in the Canadian Forces Reserves. Earls is closing the doors of its Abbotsford restaurant after more than 15 years at its location on South Fraser Way. The restaurant, located at the 32900 block of South Fraser Way at the Sevenoaks Shopping Centre, was opened in July of 1997 and will close at the end of October. Cate Simpson, communications manager for Earls, said the Abbotsford restaurant was unable to secure a long-term lease at the current site, which needed extensive renovations. She added that it is unlikely the restaurant will open another location in Abbotsford. “I don’t know if Abbotsford will be rebuilt. They tend to take a few years before they can find new locations that work for (Earls). At the moment we are concentrating on opening new locations in the U.S.” Simpson said the Vancouver-based, family-run business generally takes its time in looking for prime locations. “It would have been ideal to have a new location found in Abbotsford before closing, but unfortunately, we were unable to secure the lease.”

The Sears National Kids Cancer Ride stopped in Abbotsford Thursday (Sept. 5) morning. Among the dozens of riders at the event was Abbotsford’s Bob Ahuja, who also participated in last year’s event. The ride is one of the biggest and most ambitious charity cycling events on behalf of childhood cancer in the world. Now in its sixth year, the 2013 ride started Sept. 5 in Vancouver and will be completed in Halifax on Sept. 21. But Ahuja said he will only be traveling as far as Winnipeg this time around. That’s five days of riding. “I just want to help people out. That’s what this ride is about,” he said. Initially he got involved because he lost his 14-yearold cousin to cancer in 2010. “People need to know that it’s not just adult smokers who get cancer. It’s little kids who have never done anything that are getting it. I ride because I can do it and I do it because I want to help people out. It’s all I can do, I’m not a doctor,” said Ahuja. At the start and end of each day, riders will participate in community events and visit many of Canada’s 17 pediatric oncology centres and hospitals where the cancer community will share inspiring stories of strength and hope with cyclists and the media. Together, cyclists will raise millions of dollars on behalf of charities that improve the quality of life for children, and their families, living with and beyond cancer. Funds raised will be directed to both national initiatives in support of childhood oncology programs, as well as to local and community programs through pediatric oncology hospitals and centres across the country. All of the money raised goes directly to fund research and support programs for kids cancer in each of the pediatric oncology centres across Canada. It is estimated that cancer impacts 10,000 Canadian children. 3346-16

Both girls testified via closed-circuit TV because they did not want to face Vir in an open court and share intimate details of the offences. “Both girls feared the shame they believed would come to them and their families, even though they’d done nothing wrong,” Brown said. He said although the teens are moving forward with their lives, they will always be impacted by what Vir did to them. Vir had befriended each girl separately and, at first, spent time helping them work through issues with their boyfriends. He had more than 200 phone conversations with one of the teens, including one call that lasted three hours. The friendships extended into sexual advances from Vir that included kissing and groping the girls, attempting to have sex with one of them, and exposing himself. All the incidents took place in the temple, either in the kitchen or in Vir’s living quarters. Other members of the temple became suspicious about Vir’s behavior and brought their concerns to the Abbotsford Police, who launched an investigation. Vir was charged in November 2010 with two counts of touching a young person for a sexual purpose and one count of sexual assault. During the trial, Vir’s lawyer argued that the allegations had been made up by a faction of the temple that was upset with Vir having cleaned up the temple’s finances. He suggested that the girls knew each other and colluded in making up the sexual allegations. Vir was given credit for the four months he has spent in prison since his conviction in May, leaving him with another two years and two months to serve. He will be deported to India upon the completion of his sentence.

Abbotsford chamber is planning a nineday event that allows visitors to experience China on a guided tour. “We were introduced to this last year by the Canadian Chamber
executive group,” explained Allan Asaph, executive director of the Abbotsford chamber. In April, Asaph travelled to China as part of a pilot trip. He was
impressed with the country, but also with the quality of the tour itself. Now the chamber wants everyone to have the opportunity to see China for themselves.
“We’ve titled the tour Discover China because it’s not a trade mission. We are not going over there for the sole purpose of developing business relationships,” he said.

While there will be some opportunities to talk business, Asaph said primarily the trip is designed to introduce people to the history, culture and everyday life of modern China. The trip takes place April 4-12. It is allinclusive and participants will visit four of China’s leading cities, Beijing (site of the 2008 Olympics), Suzhou (where Tiger Hill, also known as Surging Sea Hill, the most famous scenic spot in the country is located), Hangzhou and Shanghai (which is located along the Yangtze River). Visitors will also see the Great Wall of China which w a s b u i l t m o r e t h a n 2,000 years ago and spans ASAPH o v e r 4,000 miles. The cost is $2,499 per person for chamber members and guests and $2,649 for non-members. There is an additional $500 charge for single occupancy. The price includes round-trip international airfare from Vancouver, accommodation in four- and five-star hotels, three meals per day, all incountry transportation, experienced Englishspeaking tour guides and all tour fees. “There is something in this tour for everybody,” said Asaph. The chamber is hosting an information meeting on Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. at the Coast Abbotsford Hotel and Suites (2020 Sumas Way). Leo Liu, president of Citslinc will be on hand to answer questions about the excursion. Asaph said they hope to attract between 60 and 80 travellers. Measles confirmed
Fraser Health issued a warning Friday, alerting residents that several individuals in the region were recently diagnosed with measles, with one case in Abbotsford. There are four confirmed cases in Abbotsford, Burnaby, Surrey and Chilliwack, and several more additional cases have symptoms consistent with measles. Fraser Health stated that while most cases of measles come from travelers bringing measles back from another country, officials are concerned that most of these cases have no known exposure to measles. All cases were either not immunized, incompletely immunized, or did not know their immunization status, emphasizing the importance of being fully immunized. The Fraser Health Authority is currently investigating the cause of the measles outbreak, to determine if the cases are linked. In August, Fraser Health’s chief medical health officer warned about the rise in measles cases in the Fraser Valley. Current guidelines for vaccination against measles are that people born after 1956 should have two doses of measles-containing vaccine. The vaccine is available as measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine and usually given to children at the first birthday and then again at four to six years of age. Individuals are urged to contact their regular health care provider, their local health unit, or their pharmacist to receive the free vaccination.

After eight long years of trying, the University of the Fraser Valley men’s soccer team finally has a win over the UBC Thunderbirds. The Cascades fashioned the breakthrough triumph on Sunday evening at UBC’s Point Grey campus, edging the hosts 1-0 on Connor MacMillan’s goal in the 86th minute. Prior to Sunday, the UFV men had suffered 14 straight losses in Canada West regular season play to the powerhouse Thunderbirds,
who own a record 12 CIS national championships and were on a 27game unbeaten streak in regular season and playoff action, dating back to 2011. “I hope it gives the players more belief in themselves,” head coach Alan Errington said, pondering the landmark result. “The only thing we’ve got to be afraid of is ourselves, really. To go into UBC is quite intimidating, because we’ve never got a result there. “But on the day, we were the better team.” Indeed, MacMillan’s

Franklin Chase 1935 - 2013 Franklin Averill Chase passed away August 31st 2013 in the early morning peacefully in Christine Morrison Hospice. He was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick on October 23, 1935 to Levert and Stella Chase. He served in the Armed Forces from 1953-1980 and settled in Abbotsford, BC where he lived the rest of his life with his wife and daughter. He loved fishing and hunting. He was a wonderful Husband and Father and the most amazing Papa. He is survived by his wife Sonia; daughter Dana Kayser; granddaughters Danika, Alise and Makenna Kayser; sisters Reta Hatfield and Leona Betts. He was loved by all who knew him. GUNTHER, Edward Andrew Feb 26, 1964 - Sept. 6, 2013 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ed at ARHCC on Friday morning, with loved ones at his side. Ed was born in Steinbach, Manitoba and the family moved to BC in 1966. He lived life in his own quiet, independent way with a quirky sense of humor that was never ending. His greatest pride and joy were his daughters. Ed was a sports enthusiast and was seldom seen without a Timmy’s cup in hand. He will be remembered with love by his daughters Rachael (Mike and Sydney), Kristen and Jessie, his best friends Gary, Brea and Brian; parents, Peter and Melane Gunther; siblings, Peter (Marita), John (Ingried), Dave (Teresa), Phil (Janine) and Ruth (Craig) as well as many nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will be held in Ed’s memory on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at 1 pm at the Garden Park Tower, 2825 Clearbrook Rd, Abbotsford, BC V2T 6S3.
Anna passed into the presence of the Lord, September 7, 2013 at the age of 85. Anna emigrated from the Ukraine arriving in Chilliwack in 1947. She became a nurse and worked as a dental assistant at the Children’s Hospital. Anna married Oliver Emert Heinrichs in 1970. They had one child Judy, who died in infancy. Anna is survived by Alex, Louise (Bill) Toews; nieces Monica, Violet, Heidi and nephews Karl, Nick, Dale and 9 grand nieces and nephews and many friends. Viewing at 3:00 pm, Sunday, September 15th at the Clearbrook MB Church, 2719 Clearbrook Road. A celebration of Anna’s life will be held at Clearbrook MB Church at 11:00 am on Monday September 16, 2013. We thank the medical staff at the ARH for their dedicated care.
