LNG refuelling station will be a first for BC Alina Konevski The Progress A refuelling station for long-haul trucks that use liquefied natural gas (LNG) is expected in Chilliwack within months. The station is the first of its kind west of Calgary, city council heard Tuesday. Chinese-owned ENN Canada Corp. is quickly creating a network of LNG refuelling stations across the country, with Chilliwack first up in western Canada. The plan is to work with transport companies and engine manufacturers to retrofit entire fleets of long-haul trucks from diesel-based engines to LNG-based engines. Refuelling with LNG will cost 20-40 per cent less per litre than diesel, according to ENN project manager Stephen Rohling. The new network of refuelling stations would provide truck drivers the confidence they need to use LNG trucks. “It’s new, it’s in its infancy. It’s a chicken and egg scenario. Which do we build first, the station or the trucks? We are trying to combine it so that the station and the trucks are going to be coming online at the same time,” said Rohling. At Tuesday’s city council meeting, the City of Chilliwack approved ENN’s application to rezone their property at 44037 Progress Way to permit a natural gas bulk storage and sales facility and service station. Once all the paperwork is done, building the station will take about nine months. LNG will then be trucked in. Chilliwack is a natural stopping point for trucks travelling across Canada, as well as those coming in from Seattle and further inland, said Rohling. ENN is planning similar refuelling stops at every 600 km or so on major routes. Rohling himself is looking at 17 sites in B.C. and Alberta.

Within months of leaving office, former Chilliwack MLA John Les has been hired as a professional opponent to Metro Vancouver’s waste-to-energy incinerator plans. Les registered as a lobbyist for Belkorp Environmental Services last month, an appointment that extends until Aug. 1, 2014. The company owns Wastech Services, which operates the Cache Creek Landfill. “I was approached by them. Obviously their objectives fall very much in line with what has historically been my position on waste management in the Lower Mainland,” said Les. “The objective is that there would be no waste incineration in the Lower Mainland. I think the residents of the Fraser Valley here share that objective.” During his time as MLA, Les vehemently opposed the proposed WTE project, citing concerns about emissions from the incinerator damaging the sensitive Fraser Valley airshed. As a lobbyist, he will continue to advocate for solutions other than incineration. “There is a requirement to maximize recycling before other options such as incineration. Landfilling should be considered. And if we do a good job of recylcing, then actually the very best fuels for incineration are taken out of the waste stream,” said Les. “We’ll obviously be pointing those things out, and we think there are better and more enlightened options for dealing with waste management, that will likely be much cheaper for the ratepayers.” The part-time position is “natural” for Les. TV series begins shooting Thursday in Agassiz Jessica Peters The Observer Set construction came to a frenzied pace on Wednesday in Agassiz, in preparation for the filming of a television series. Shooting starts Thursday morning, along Pioneer Ave. The entire street has been redesigned to portray the imaginary town of Wayward Pines, ID. The road will be completely closed to traffic and parking on Thursday and Friday, said location manager David Tamkin. But, two dozen production assistants will be on hand, redirecting traffic through Agassiz and helping people find

parking. While the street is closed to traffic, all businesses will remain open. Changes will also be seen for transit those days. Bus stops that are normally on Pioneer, outside Lordco and The Observer, will temporarily move to Cheam Ave., behind Lordco. “It will be just like when there is a parade in town,” he said. The excitement will wrap up on Friday night, but only temporarily. Many of the stores are completely covered in movie set facades. Those will be removed and stored for the next shooting days, sometime in October, Tamkin said. Any business that is currently disguised or has its

sign covered will be restored so that the business can operate as usual. All set dressings will be pulled away or secured, as well, such as the outdoor cafe that has been designed around The Observer office. However, the large set that is placed along Pioneer Park will remain in place until shooting wraps up in February. To keep the sets safe, the production company has hired 24 hour security, with two guards on site at all times. While the downtown may be feeling some minor inconveniences, with the constant construction, one way traffic and limited sidewalk space all through the week, there are some benefits, Tamkin added.

By the time the series is done filming next year, they will have spent about $1 million locally. “That’s a pretty accurate figure,” he said. “We are paying the District of Kent a monthly permit fee of a significant amount. There are also 30, 40 or 50 people staying in hotels, eating in restaurants, doing their laundry and all of that regular living stuff.” They’ve also hired a large crew of local labourers, although not as many as they’d hoped to. “We were not able to find as much local labour as we thought would could,” he said, due to a lack of available workers. He added that the union workers are all busy work-

ing on a George Clooney movie also shooting in Vancouver. And many of the local labourers were already booked up for the time needed. Of those staying from out of town, he estimates they’ve been using about 40 rooms a night in recent weeks. “All those things add up and essentially we’ll leave a million dollars in the area that wasn’t here before,” he said. Wayward Pines will star Matt Dillon, Carla Gugino, Terrence Howard and Juliette Lewis, among others, and is being directed by M. Night Shyamalan.

Katie Bartel The Progress When Parker Hendsbee walked through the doors of Chilliwack Secondary for the first time, it was as though he had been dropped into Oz. But instead of Kansas, he was looking for Chilliwack. “It was too much to take in at first,” he said of his new school Tuesday morning. “It was surreal. I wondered if I was still in Chilliwack… the colours, the architecture, the design, it’s almost like this building doesn’t belong here.” Hendsbee, a Grade 12 student, was amongst a select group of students who were granted a first tour of the new school last Wednesday. He was blown away by the library, the double-wide stairwells, the brightness of the building, even the washrooms. “They’re almost as nice as the Cactus Club bathrooms,” he said. And on the first day of school, Tuesday morning, Hendsbee’s excitement had yet to wear off. “Just look at this library,” he said, peering down into the window-lit room from one of the many viewing locations. “This is amazing.” Compared to the old school’s cramped, dark space with “hospital lighting” and “prison-style” windows, the new space is definitely an improvement. With its floor-to-ceiling windows, wood beams, and the double row of cozy, coffee-shop style chairs, “it actually makes me want to read again, makes me want to hang out here, do homework here.”

Grade 12 student Dupreez Smith was most enamored with the gym, pointing to the school’s new logo on the floor, the subtlety of the navy blue CSS etched across the royal blue bleachers, the high ceilings. “It’s going to be a completely different atmosphere in here [game day],” said Smith, an avid basketball player. “School spirit is going to be through the roof.” Just as exciting was the science wing’s super lab, a full-functioning lab with several work stations separate from the classroom space. “It’s way above any other lab I’ve worked in,” said Smith, who plans on a career in medicine. “Some of the teachers have said that even in university they didn’t have labs as nice as this one.” But for Grade 12 student Evelyn Appleton, the expansiveness of the three-story building was somewhat intimidating, almost like the first day of middle school all over again. “I didn’t know where anything was,” she said. “It’s huge. It’s overwhelming.”

And yet, as the three students, all in their last year of high school, walked through the wide hallways of their new school their eyes lit up at the size of their Olympic handme-down lockers; the environmentally friendly water fountains eliminating the need for plastic bottles; the acoustics in the stairwell; the lack of bottleneck conges-

Chilliwack will be the site of a major search and rescue conference next month, city council heard Tuesday. SARscene 2013 will have nearly 500 SAR delegates from Canada and abroad flood the RCMP Pacific Region Training Centre (PRTC) in Chilliwack to show off their skills and share ideas about the latest trends and training in the field. The B.C. search and rescue teams are the busiest in the country, and receive more calls than the rest of Canada combined. The Chilliwack SAR team is one of the nation’s oldest and busiest. “The local search and rescue team is well-respected in the SAR community. They’re extremely active,” said Colin Weibe, vice-president of the B.C. Search and Rescue Association (BCSARA). “One reason for their workload is the incredible backcountry and recreation opportunities that are available here, and I argue that Chilliwack River Valley is likely one of the busiest recreation corridors in North America.” One day at SARscene will be dedicated to the SAR Games, where teams will compete in six intense challenges — from overnight survival skills to knot-tying to practical theory — designed to test their ground, air, and sea search and rescue skills. “The last time this conference was held in B.C. was in Victoria in 2007, and Continued: SAR/ p9

Lemonade fund raiser earns Chilliwack council’s applause Alina Konevski The Progress A young man in Chilliwack received an honour that he’s sure to tell his grandkids about decades later. Kai Manning was awarded a certificate of recognition from city hall on Tuesday. The nine-year-old captured the town’s heart last month when he started selling lemonade

to raise money for children with cancer at BC Children’s Hospital. Kai’s father, Bob Manning, passed away to the disease a few years ago. “I don’t want other kids and families to feel the same way,” Kai told The Progress on Aug. 8 when he had the lemonade stand open. As people pulled up to his house with bills, Kai ended up collecting a grand total of

$4,250 for the hospital. Chilliwack mayor Sharon Gaetz learned of the story through Facebook, where local RCMP Cst. Kevin Morris posted a plea to the community to support Manning. The post started with, ‘Have you ever had a moment when your heart sank, and you knew you had to do something?’ “When that arrived on my Facebook page, I thought

about it for a while, and it started to be reposted all over the place,” said Gaetz, who maintains an active presence online. A family of five is homeless after their house was completely destroyed by fire just before midnight on Labour Day. The four-year-old, 3500-square-foot house in the 6400-block of Bearstone Place was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on scene around 11:40 p.m. on Monday, with fire venting from the roof of the second floor. Fire crews from Halls 1, 4 and 6 battled the massive blaze which took 90 minutes to get under control. The home is located in a fairly new residential area on Tzeachten Reserve, east of Vedder Road, off of South Sumas Road. Occupants of the home – alerted by a teenage girl – were able to escape from the home unharmed. There were no firefighter injuries. The cause of the fire is unknown and the incident will be investigated by the RCMP and by Chilliwack Fire Department officials.

ICBC is hiking auto insurance premiums almost five per cent in the latest government tax gouge. Make no mistake, the public insurer is just another arm of B.C.’s bloated government bureaucracy. This B.C. Liberal government’s constant messaging about what a low-tax regime it is offering rings hollow considering the premium it attaches to so many government services, from ferries, to MSP Premiums, even toll bridges. Critics, including the Consumers Association of Canada, point out that ICBC has become a cash cow for the government. The association says that since taking office, the Liberals have taken more than $1.2 billion out of ICBC. Yet now ICBC says it needs 4.9 per cent more in basic insurance. At the same time, the insurer forecasts a net income of $230 million this year and next. The corporation is accumulating funds. In 2002, ICBC’s reserves were $314 million – and there should be surplus to safeguard an insurer against an unexpected spike in claims. But there was a loud protest from critics when the agency said it would bring the reserves to $1 billion. By 2010, they were at $3.8 billion. There should be a formal determination of how much the Crown corporation needs in reserve, expressed as a percentage of the agency’s annual payout for injury settlements. The remainder of the reserves must be returned to B.C. drivers in the form of lower premiums. ICBC interim president Mark Blucher tries to defend the 4.9 per cent increase as insignificant, saying that the hike in basic insurance premiums will be offset by better deals, which will be offered on optional insurance. For years, ICBC has been allowed to take the tactic of raising basic premiums, while lowering optional product prices to compete with private insurers. There is only one good reason to have government in the insurance business – cheaper insurance for taxpayers. But it’s not. More affordable insurance could be had through private companies – a consumer need only log into the website of an Alberta insurer and get an online quote for their vehicle and coverage to see that. ~ Black Press

Another year, another school labour dispute VICTORIA – Another school year dawns in B.C., with the prospect of disruptive labour disputes. First up are 27,000 support staff, in a legal strike position. These are the teacher aides, custodians, bus drivers and crossing guards. Most are members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, with a few Teamsters and other locals scattered around the 60 school districts. Public discussion about these disputes usually focuses on wage increases, which CUPE members in schools haven’t seen for four years. Their current deals expired more than a year ago, after they were subject to the same two-year wage freeze imposed on the rest of government. The B.C. government moved from the post-recession wage freeze to a system they call “cooperative gains,” where raises

must be financed by savings in other areas of the operation. Only two provincial employee groups have yet to do this: school support staff and teachers. (Education Minister Peter Fassbender confirmed last week that teacher raises will be funded by extra transfers from Tom FLETCHER the provincial treasury as they try to get a long-term deal. But that’s a topic for another day.) CUPE, the largest union in the country, has a sophisticated media campaign to generate public sympathy. We are repeatedly reminded not only that the last raise was 2009, but that the “average” pay is a mere $24,000 a year. If that num-

ber is accurate, it reflects a large number of part-timers. Let’s look at a few provisions CUPE doesn’t talk about, on behalf of those self-employed taxpayers who have no paid holidays, no employer pension or benefits and no paid overtime, but are expected to help pay all of the above to government workers. The 60 contracts have many variations, but core elements are the same. In the Central Okanagan school district, the starting CUPE wage rate is $17.37 an hour. The top rate is $26.59, or $28.78 for workers who qualify for a “trades adjustment.” All contracts have rigid seniority and “bumping” clauses to ensure that new employees absorb any reductions in working hours. From a taxpayer’s perspective, this leads to the maximum number of employees making the highest

wages. Overtime in Central Okanagan is time and a half for the first two hours, and double time after that. Contracts also include the provision that unscheduled overtime is subject to a four-hour minimum. It’s amazing how often an unexpected hour of work can arise when it’s paid at quadruple time. The Surrey school district contract details how even “spare board” employees are to be enrolled in the municipal pension plan, a defined-benefit system most private-sector employees can only dream about. Then there are paid sick days. The Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation reports that the average B.C. private sector worker took 7.4 sick days last year. The public sector average was 12. The Surrey contract details the windfall of unused sick days that

must be paid out to employees who retire as early as age 55. The maximum is 150 days, for a lavish perk only available to employees hired before July 1, 1996. Even so, we’ll be paying these bonuses out for years to come. It goes on and on. Six weeks’ paid vacation after 20 years, with an extra day added for every year after that. There are many little things, such as a $60 “swimsuit allowance” for teacher aides who take part in swimming instruction. This is not to devalue the work done by these people. It is to suggest that given the growing gap between public and private employment benefits, finding savings is reasonable. Do you know where your kids are? I live near the baseball park on Fairfield Island. My motherin-law is getting a bit older and is not comfortable being on her own anymore, so she is living with us now. This past weekend we had out-of-town guests. Her daughter was married on Saturday, so we had parked mom’s car on the street in front of our own house in our wonderful neighbourhood, only to be

woken up by police at 1:30 a.m. They told us some teens had been roaming through the area and had vandalized cars and the elementary school. My motherin-law’s car had a rock about one-foot round thrown through her back window. She is on a fixed income and now has to pay the $200 deductible to have it replaced. I would like to say to those

parents who think allowing their kids to roam the streets late at night is not a problem: Well, it is. And if you think your kids are behaving, likely they are not. If they were well-behaved and had some parenting at home they wouldn’t be roaming the streets late at night and being a burden and huge cost to the taxpayers, city and public. Corrie McDougall

Are there enough slobs in Chilliwack? I have been very concerned about the recent expansion of restaurant outlets in our city. It seemed to me that we could not possibly have enough patrons to leave their half eaten food on all those additional tables. How foolish I was to worry when the good people of Chilliwack were up to the challenge! A quick check at McDonalds this morn-

ing and then Tim Hortons this afternoon assured me that all is well. The usual crowds seem to have risen to the task and half consumed food and empty containers occupy most tables and often spill out into the parking lots. Who do we have to thank for this bounty of garbage left on open display? I have broken the patrons down into several categories for

easy study. 1) Geezers ( like me) who are likely in the early stages of dementia and cannot remember a time when you carried out the remainder of a meal to the receptacle at the door. 2) Teens who did not learn at home to clean ?up after themselves. 3) Teen workers who cannot take a break from their conversations to clean the tables and garbage cans.

4) Absent management who value ‘no brain/ no train’ as a company motto. 5) Parents who are determined to teach their children ‘someone else’ will look after their mess. We are fortunate indeed that there are enough of these slobs to employ an army of Hell’s Angels as the restaurant industry and our waistlines expand. Jack A. Bass

Getting creative at the Centre’s open house

Musician comes home to play Chilliwack Katie Bartel The Progress Jamison Dick is used to selling out shows in major metropolis’, but at home, in Chilliwack he’s lucky if he gets a few dozen. In a way, he likes it that way. “It’s really nice to have home be home, to not have to be working all the time,” he said. “And I love playing a small room, talking to people individually after a show, reaching my audience on a more intimate level.” Dick, 27, is headlining this weekend’s Where the Forest Songs Are music festival on Island 22 with his one-man electro-pop band Teen Daze. Dick, who lived in Rosedale until he was 13 before moving

to Manitoba, and then returning again in his early 20s, has been growing an impressive fan base in the United States and across Europe. His band’s Facebook page has over 21,000 followers, and when he plays shows in places like New York City, San Francisco, Stockholm, Sweden, he has large crowds clamoring to see him. All by happenstance. When Dick started college, music was an easy outlet for procrastination from his studies. He played in bands, dabbled in home recording, set up a small studio in his apartment and made music for his friends. It was just a hobby. But when he uploaded his songs online, within one month he was

fielding email inquiries from different management companies. “It was a matter of being in the right place at the right time,” he said. “My music isn’t mainstream, it’s more niche, it attracts a crowd that’s more invested in discovering new bands, new music. And I think places like New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco have more of a scene that’s interested in the type of music I do.” Dick describes his music as being rooted in pop, but more rough around the edges than mainstream pop music. Being a one-man show, he samples his songs with various electronics. “Every show is different and unique,” he said. “It depends on the crowd, if they’re energetic, I’ll

play more upbeat dance music, but if they’re more low-key, chill, relaxed, I’ll accommodate them too.” This will be the second time Dick has played the Chilliwack festival. “Getting to share this, what I do, with the people in my life, it’s an amazing feeling,” he said. Where the Forest Songs Are is an all-ages show featuring several young, up-and-coming bands. The festival is on Saturday, Sept. 7 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tickets are $20 or a family for $45. di bl Huskers and Broncos meet again BCHL unpredictable The Valley Huskers host the Kamloops Broncos Saturday afternoon at Townsend Park (1 p.m.), trying to snap a two game losing skid. The Huskers are coming off an entertaining game with a disappointing result — a 40-33 home-field loss to Victoria’s Westshore Rebels last weekend. Their record sits at 2-2-1 as they face the only team they’ve ‘officially’ beaten this season. The Huskers and Broncos have met twice already, playing to a 29-29 tie in their first meeting Aug. 3. The Huskers beat Kamloops 33-30 one week later. Chilliwack’s other win was a 1-0 default, handed to them due to an Okanagan Sun roster error.

Chilliwack welcomes league at BCHL Showcase

Sixteen BCHL teams hit the ice for 16 games at Prospera Centre this weekend as Chilliwack hosts the second annual BCHL Showcase. Action starts at 3:30 p.m. Friday, with the Victoria Grizzlies and Penticton Vees facing off on the secondary rink. A half hour later, the Coquitlam Express and Merritt Centennials meet on the main sheet.

A tailgate party and corn roast is scheduled to run from 5 to 6:45 p.m., with 89.5 The Drive providing music and Fraser Valley Party Rentals providing games. Kai Manning will have his lemonade stand set up, with proceeds going to the BC Childrens Hospital. The hockey continues at 7 p.m., with Langley and Trail meeting on the secondary rink. The West Kelowna Warriors and Surrey Eagles have a 7:30 p.m. start on the main rink. Six games fill the Saturday schedule. The Nanaimo Clippers and West Kelowna Warriors face off at 3 p.m. (secondar y). Penticton takes on the Alberni Valley

Bulldogs at 3:30 p.m. (main). The hometown Chilliwack Chiefs play their first Showcase game at 7 p.m., hosting the Powell River Kings (main). The Cowichan Valley Capitals and Prince George Spruce Kings have a 6:30 p.m. start (secondary). Another six games go Sunday, starting with a 10:30 a.m. tilt between Powell River and Salmon Arm (secondary). Alberni Valley and Coquitlam have an 11 a.m. start (main). The afternoon matches have Prince George facing Nanaimo (2 p.m. on secondary) and Cowichan Valley taking on Trail (2:30 p.m. on main). Merritt and Langley

have a 5:30 p.m. date on the secondary rink, and Chilliwack and Vernon close out the Showcase with a 6 p.m. start on the main sheet. A large contingent of collegiate talent evaluators will be taking in the games. A weekend pass for the general public will cost $40 for adults/seniors, $30 for youths and $20 for children. A single-day pass will cost $17 for adults/seniors, $15 for youths and $12 for children. Chiefs fans will be able to purchase tickets to the two Chiefs games at regular walk up pricing. The CJAHL pre-season rankings came out last week and three BCHL teams are in the top 20. The Penticton Vees are the top-ranked team at number two, followed by the Vernon V ernon Vipers at six and the Langley Rivermen at 15. Seeing those teams ranked where they are isn’t a surprise. But then again, I won’t be surprised if it doesn’t work out that way. Penticton will be very good again, and if Vernon isn’t deserving of that ranking right now, as hosts of this yyear’s ear’s national championship you know they’ll do whatever w hatever it takes to be a serious contender. For a couple reasons, the BCHL can be a very difficult league to predict. High turnover among players is one, and the addition of players from all over North America is the other. Langley being the top ranked team in the Mainland division makes sense. They start the season with w ith 15 players with junior A experience, and a head coach in former Chief Bobby Henderson who now has a full year of head coaching experience at this level. All indications are they’ve brought in a strong group of new players including Darien Craighead, the son of former Chief John Craighead. Vancouver Former Canuck Peter Schaeffer takes over the head coaching duties for the defending BCHL champion Surrey Eagles. With 16 new players,

albeit several with Junior A experience, it may take a while for the Eagles to find their way. The Coquitlam Express also have a new head coach in former Chiefs assistantt coach Barry Wolff. Barry is incredibly well connected in the world of junior hockey. Look for him to get thatt team, which included former Chiefs Shay Laurent, Ben Israel and Garrettt Forster, pointed back in the right direction. The Chiefs will have 14 new players in their opening night lineup, twelve off them14 players will be playing at this level for the firstt time. Gone are the likes off goaltender Mitch Gillam, the best goalie in the league the last two years, as well as defensemen David Thompson, Laurent, Alex x Perron Fontaine and Ben Masella. That is a difficultt group to replace. What we’ve seen through training camp and the exhibition games is a group with a lot of skill. The big questions are how long it will take for them to fully adaptt to this level of hockey and how long it will take forr them to come together as a team. Remember, many off these players did not know w each other a month ago and two weeks ago they were competing for spots on the team. McNeill wins field lacrosse gold Rematch goes to Longhorns Chilliwack’s Connor McNeill is a national champion. The 16 year old joined 20 BC boys in Longueuil, Quebec, last week for the Canadian Field Lacrosse Championships. Playing at the U-16 level, McNeill helped his team to a 3-0 record in group-play. McNeill and company started off swatting their archrivals from Ontario 11-7. Game two saw them edge the Iroquois Lacrosse Association 14-13 in sudden death overtime. Game three was a laugher, a 23-1 rout of Alberta that left McNeill’s crew first in the Red group. In their first playoff game, Team BC played Quebec in a one-versusfour matchup. Team BC demolished the hosts 16-2, setting up a gold medal match with Ontario. Team BC blitzed Ontario in the early going, taking a 6-1 lead just five minutes in. They led 12-6 through three quarters and cruised to a 14-9 final. McNeill was original-

ly supposed to fill the lefty attack position for Team BC, but ended up playing midfield. The only local lad in the tournament, he scored one goal and added a handful of helpers as Team BC won for the third year in a row. McNeill also won a

silver medal in 2011, representing BC at box lacrosse nationals. He played for Team Talon at the U-15 US National Championships in Florida last summer, placing fourth out of 26 teams. The Chilliwack

The minor football season kicked off last weekend, with Chilliwack’s bantam Giants facing the North Delta Longhorns. In a rematch of a preseason game won by Chilliwack, the Longhorns got revenge with an 18-14 win. North Delta took an early lead on back to back majors, both off long runs. Down 12-0 at halftime, Chilliwack rallied behind quarterback Gabe Olivares. The pivot hooked up with wideout Trey Isaac on a 60 yard pass-and-run TD. The Longhorns answered right back with a major to make it 18-8. Chilliwack got the last points, with a 45 yard Issac pass reception getting the Giants inside the 10 yard line. Olivares finished the drive himself, finding paydirt from three yards out. Running back Karan Deol was a key offensive contributor. Several big runs forced the Longhorn D to adapt, open-

ing things up for Chilliwack’s passing game. Defensively, linebackers Austin Penner and Cam Lampart were solid, wreaking havoc behind disruptive defensive linemen Chris Derksen and Emerson Harvey. Warren Rogers made plays all over the field. ● The junior bantam Giants had a rough start to their season, falling 36-0 to the Meadow Ridge Knights. Led by quarterback Colin Campbell and running back Hudson Harvey, the Chilliwack offence moved ball. But finishing drives was a problem. A 20-yard catch and run by Josh Balzer had the Giants inside the 15 yard line early, but they couldn’t punch it in. The defence was led by tackling machine Cash Weich and hard hitting Justin Crooks. “There were a lot of positives, and these young men showed true grit and determination,” said head coach Bryan Harvey. “We continued to move the ball and our defense made a lot of stops. We have to focus on blocking and tackling, and it will be a much different game when we play them again.” ● Chilliwack’s pee-

Braun, Lila May Lila Braun passed away peacefully early Tuesday September 3rd, 2013. Born to Rawley and Ruth Swanborg, Oct. 14, 1932, she grew up in Columbia Valley. Lila married Ben Braun of Yarrow in 1954, and is survived by their 6 sons: Ralph (Melinda), Brad, Terry, Russell (Josie), Ken (Joan) and Warren (Beryl). She will also be missed by all her sons and grandkids: Heather, Lyle, Tennille, Whitney, Jory, Connor, Nolan, Aiden, Ethan, Nathania and Cole. Predeceased by husband Ben in 2007. She is also survived by her twin sister Norma Friesen, sister Joan Gust, brother John Swanborg and predeceased by brothers, Ernie, Don, and daughter-in-law Tammy. A long time resident of Chilliwack, early in family life Lila was active in the community with March for Dimes, Kinette and later, she and Ben were also members of Chilliwack Alliance Church. Lila was a true artist and enjoyed gardening, baking, painting and drawing, summer camping trips to Vancouver Island fishing trips to Shuswap, Skaha and Fish lake and visiting family. She is remembered as a good neighbour, a courageous mother in the face of challenges, and a caring grandmother. Memorial service will be held next week. HOWARD, Edith “Muriel” Muriel passed away on August 13th, 2013 at Heritage Village at the age of 91. She was born September 23, 1921 in Gilbert Plains Manitoba. Muriel is survived by daughter Verlene (Joe) Clegg and son Russell, Grand daughters Darcie (Jeff) Murray Donna (Mic) Archambault, Shelley (Devin) Spackman. Great Grandchildren Josh, Cody, Riley, Nicole, Nathan, Darcy and Alexis. Also survived by Sister-in Laws Isabel Smith, Muriel Taylor, Betty Buchanan, Ardel Ford, Doreen Hildebrandt, Hazel Watson and Kathy Huband. Brother-in-laws Ernie Howard and Dudley Ford and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her Husband Stan of 60 years, her parents and her siblings Arlene Murray, Geraldine Peacock and Harold Smith. Mom was a member of the Royal Purple Branch #110 for over 50 years. During that time she held many offices e.g. Honoured Royal Lady, District Deputy, Secretary, Treasurer. She was also a Life Member and Past President of the Senior Veterans Society. She enjoyed Bingo, crib, keno and the slot machines. She spent many hours at the Senior Vets enjoying games and fellowship with the many friends she made there. She also loved to read, knit and crochet. When her health started failing she moved to Heritage Village where she met old friends and made new ones. She loved her time there. MacFadyen, Donald John (Jack) (1929-2013)

Jack passed away in his sleep on August 24, 2013, in the Chilliwack General Hospital at the age of 84. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Frances, and their four children; Rod (Teasa Haney), Mary, Margot (Moe Agagnier) and Mark and his younger brother Charles (Lois) as well as two grandsons, Patrick and Stephen, of whom he was immensely proud. Jack was born in Eden, Manitoba to Donald and Margaret MacFadyen. He attended school in Kerrobert and Maple Creek, Saskatchewan and began his career as a very young cowboy in place of the many men from Maple Creek who were lost in WWII. In 1949 he earned his undergraduate degree in Biology and Chemistry from the University of Saskatchewan with distinction and went on to graduate in Medicine from the University of Toronto in 1953. For three years after graduation he chose to practise as the only doctor in the Northern Saskatchewan community of Loon Lake. While beginning his specialty in Neurology at the Saskatoon University Hospital, he received a MSc. Degree in Pathology in 1961 from the U of S, continued his neurological training with Harvard University at Boston City Hospital and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1963 as well as the American Academy of Neurology. In the 70’s and 80’s he taught at the University of Saskatchewan and UBC where he eventually headed both Departments of Neurology. He remained dedicated to medical education and public access to medicine throughout his career of almost 50 years. In 1975 he volunteered with CARE Canada as a neurological training specialist in Kabul, Afghanistan, an experience that he thoroughly enjoyed and remembered fondly for the rest of his life. He and Frances moved to Chilliwack, BC in 1988 where he practised as the sole neurologist in the Eastern Fraser Valley until his retirement in 2000. He dedicated the last years of his life to the care of his wife and best friend, Frances. Heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Royal Columbian and Chilliwack General Hospitals for their consideration and care of Jack in his last days. There was a graveside service on August 30, 2013 at the Chilliwack Cemetery. The service may be viewed and condolences to the family may be left on the website of Henderson’s Funeral Home. Leverrier Maurice Gabriel Joseph Maurice Gabriel Leverrier was born March 13, 1929 in Manitoba, grew up in BC and passed away peacefully after a short hospital stay on August 28, 2013 at the age of 84 in Chilliwack, BC. He will be missed dearly by his wife of 64 years, Frances, and his children Delaine Leverrier, Debbie (Phil) West, and David (Dianna) Leverrier. He cherished his five grandchildren Christina, Catherine, Kristy (Ash) David (Melissa), Phillip (Kelly) West, and seven great grandchildren Ashleigh, Natasha, Jayden, Mackenzie, Summer, Martina and Lacey. WURTZ Jessie Jessie Wurtz, a grand lady and matriarch of our family, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 30, 2013 with her family at her side. She was born at her home in Colonsay, Saskatchewan December 2, 1915. After meeting her future husband Alfred Wurtz and living in Cando for a number of years they moved their small family to Chilliwack, BC in 1954. She began a career as Practical Nurse at the age of 40 and worked at Chilliwack Hospital until retiring at age 65. On retiring she kept busy looking after two of her grandchildren as well as her many volunteer activities. She was very active in her church community being a member of the Catholic Women’s League for over 50 years. She was also involved with Lady Lions, Senior’s Outreach, Hearth & Stroke Club, and volunteered at Mother Teresa’s Place. At one point she received a Volunteerism Award from Mayor Hames. She always had a positive outlook on life and found great joy in having family and friends for meals at her home. In her later years, as we all moved in our separate directions, she enjoyed her work as a security guard in and around the Chilliwack area, enjoying the individual peace and serenity that came with the position. On a few occasions, showing off some war wounds from those “you should have seen the other guy” moments. Thankfully, Mom and dad also began travelling on their own, and taking in the adventures of a semi-retired couple. Mom will forever be famous for her dry sense of humor and for being so guarded and private, but constantly giving. Mom’s ability to shop and the intricate, love-filled cross-stitch designs and gifts she made constantly for her friends and family will be cherished forever, and always. As a family, we would like to thank the patience, time and expertise of the countless healthcare professionals, nurses, specialists and doctors at Chilliwack General, Abbotsford General and St. Paul’s Hospital who worked tirelessly to bring mom her health back. Your efforts and diligence will never be forgotten and we are grateful for the years and support you gave her and us. Our difficult, yet supportive but irreplaceable mother is survived by her devastated husband of 32 years Mike, and us her three children; her mother, Phyllis Brandow and two sisters Sharon and Heather, and their respective families. Miller, Martin

James, Irene Myrtle

Martin Miller passed away August 24, 2013 at Cascades Hospice at the age of ninetyone. Martin was born January 30, 1922 in Viscount, Saskatchewan. He was the eighth child of sixteen children born to Andrew & Elizabeth (Novecosky) Miller. Martin left home at age sixteen and worked farming in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan. He moved on to Sudbury, Ontario where he worked for a short time in the copper mine. On December 9, 1941 Martin enlisted in the armed forces in Parry Sound, serving as an M.P. in England. He was discharged June 27, 1944 after being injured during active duty. Martin met Betty Bley in April 1944 and after a whirlwind courtship they married on July 18, 1944 in Toronto, Ontario. They celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary this past July. As a young married couple they moved to Annaheim, Saskatchewan and then on to Unity, Saskatchewan. In 1960 Martin joined the Correctional Service of Canada and relocated to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. In 1965 he transferred to Mountain Prison in Agassiz, B.C. and since that time has made Chilliwack his home. After retiring Martin and Betty travelled extensively going to Europe several times, but were just as happy visiting family, friends and relatives. Everyone was welcomed in their home. Martin is survived by his loving wife Betty and five children: Ken(Joan)Miller, Victoria, B.C.; Anne Miller, Chilliwack, B.C.; Alfred(Denise)Miller, Chilliwack, B.C.; Carol(Don)Heit, Bowden, Alberta; Darlene(Chuck)McDowell, Fort St. John, B.C. Also surviving him are his seventeen grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. Martin was predeceased by his parents Andrew & Elizabeth Miller; Sisters: Betty German and Magdalen Miller. Brothers: Leo, John, Bernard, Joseph, Anthony, Benedict, Peter and Edward. Surviving him is one brother Albert and three sisters: Sister Rita, Bridget and Sister Elizabeth Anne. Irene Myrtle James, (nee Monson) passed away peacefully in the Chilliwack General Hospital September 1, 2013, with family by her side. Irene was born at Abbotsford, BC, November 21, 1938 to Eddie and Mary Monson (nee Haines) where she was raised with her siblings, Glen, Ian, Gordon, June and Roy. In 1953, the family moved to Chilliwack where Irene continued to reside until her passing. Irene is predeceased by her parents, Eddie (in 1966) and Mary (in 1982), brothers, Glen (1992) and Gordon (2012) and sister, June (2008). She is survived by her husband Allen, son Terry (Nicole) and daughters Tammie (Kent) Dodds, Shelly and Sheri (Mark) Janssen, grandchildren, Kailyn, Connor and Tanner Dodds, Liam and Josh Janssen and Nicole’s son Devon. She is also survived by her brother Ian (Pat) of Campbell River and Roy (Ester) of Armstrong and brother in law Richard Downing of Chilliwack as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Special thank you to Drs Cambridge and Sun, the Chilliwack Hospital Emergency Department trauma staff and ICU nursing staff along with the attending Paramedics, for the great care that Irene received. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Rosedale Middle School,50850 Yale Rd East, Rosedale BC with burial to follow at Chilliwack Cemetery.

Diane Josephine Oosterlaar of Victoria, BC passed away peacefully in hospital after a very brief battle with Melanoma Cancer at the age of 51 years. She is survived by her partner Michael Lynam, her parents Bill and Rita Oosterlaar, her sisters and brothers, Tilli (Kevin) Kimler, Janet (Stu) Harris, Gerald and Brian, her niece and nephew Leanne and Trevor, also her special boys Jordan, Nick and Josh. Diane graduated with a Business Administration Degree from Fraser Valley College in Chilliwack, BC and spent many years employed at Pioneer Motors in Agassiz, BC. She later moved to Victoria and worked for The BC Ambulance Service and was presently working for BC Vital Statistics. She will be lovingly remembered by her friends and family as an animal lover, a selfless and compassionate person and a wonderful friend to all who knew her. A Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 pm on Friday, September 6, 3013 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Agassiz. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at the Agricultural Hall in Agassiz, with Valerie Martell, officiating. A service will also be held in Victoria on September 14, 2013, location to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Canadian Cancer Society.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Andrew on August 27, 2013 after a long illness. Andrew is survived by Vicki Bolan, his partner of 36 years, his mother, Ann Suzuki Miake of Sudbury ON, sisters Cathy, Caroline, and Susan, brother Makoto, aunts Mary Suzuki Hawkes, Judy Gracie, PeeWee (Phoebe) Suzuki, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews; predeceased by his aunt Cookie (Jane) and his uncle McGregor. A talented craftsman, Andrew developed his love for wood at Sheridan College in the early 1070s. Many friends and family members were the lucky recipients of game boards and boxes with intricate, inlay patterns in both domestic & exotic woods. Andrew will be remembered for his never-ending stories, his fondness for political discussions & sports (most notably the Tour de France and the Canucks), and his love of music (especially that found at the Harrison Festival of the Arts where he was a volunteer for 16 years). Special thanks go to Drs. Goodman, Bull, and Hopkins, to Dani, Janette, and Lyn with Agassiz Home Health, the nurses at the Cascade Hospice in Chilliwack and the entire Fraser Health Palliative Home Care team. It is with extremely heavy hearts we announce the passing of Sandra Savich August 27, 2013 after numerous prolonged and difficult health battles. Sandra Lynne Brandow was born March 27, 1955 in Weyburn, Saskatchewan to Lawrence (Larry) and Phyllis Brandow. The youngest of three daughters, her childhood years were filled with unforgettable memories of adventure and travels. Always the devoted daughter, Sandra followed her parents in their move to Vancouver Island from the Prairies and eventually to Chilliwack in the early 1970s, while her sisters and their families remained in and around the Winnipeg area. In Chilliwack, she met and married the love of her life, Mike Savich. They married August 8, 1981, establishing their life in Chilliwack and prospering. During this time together, Sandra and Mike welcomed us, their three children: Michelle, William and Steven. Eventually adopting the biggest child, Hudson, their purebred Newfoundlander in 2007, who despite early opposition became Mom’s constant shadow. In early 2004, Mom suffered a devastating stroke, but as a family, in true Savich form, we rallied through the good and the bad. After a shocking heart attack in 2006, we counted our lucky stars and stayed by her side. Numerous other health issues continued to plague mom since 2006, but she always fought back with immense attitude and fierce stubbornness. Even in July 2013, after her fourth heart attack, and with her own health deteriorating, mom wanted to be with Steven as he battled leukemia, wanting to constantly support him in his fight. However, Mom’s world famous stubbornness and tenacity, and our dedicated love and unwavering devotion to getting her home, could not help her beat kidney failure. Mom was always around and assuring us three kids (make that four, or is it five) were always well looked after- we knew we always had rides to practice or to late night rehearsals. Keeping us, our teams, and our employees well fed and watered, mom was always one to be one step ahead of us. We were ever so lucky to have a Mom that never missed a parent meeting, a volunteer opportunity, a game, a perfor-
