Rescued rats Domestic pets dumped into a ravine

Three glass, aquarium-style containers filled with domesticated rats were dumped into a ravine by Old Yale Road in Abbotsford last week. While authorities are unclear how many rats were abandoned, the estimate is anywhere between 25 and 50. “We have no idea how many there are but they are all domestic, friendly rats,” said Jodi Dunlop, shelter manager for the Abbotsford SPCA. Dunlop said the local SPCA became involved after receiving a

call from the Small Animal Rescue Society (SARS) of B.C., located in Burnaby, which had received a tip and came to Abbotsford in an attempt to recover the creatures. So far, 16 have been rounded up. Eight are being kept at the local SPCA while SARS has the others. Efforts will continue to locate the remaining animals, which Dunlop says will not survive in the wild. She added that the rats pose no harm to the public. “The only harm being done is to the rats because, unfortunately, if they are not all caught they will not survive and it will not be a good demise for them.” The act of dumping creatures to

fend for themselves is not uncommon. Dunlop said the SPCA currently has 28 domestic rats at the shelter. While she doesn’t know why the rats were dumped, Dunlop said it could be because someone bought two or three as pets and the situation got out of hand. “One female can have a dozen babies.” Rats also breed at a young age so the numbers can accumulate quickly. The SPCA is investigating the incident. If you have any information about the incident, call the SPCA at 604850-1584.

Tsunami of students at UFV Alex BUTLER

The University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) will once again be bursting with students this year, with some finding themselves on wait lists for enrolment and classes. The year’s attendance projections are looking similar to last year, said Eric Davis, provost and vicepresident, academic. Like previous years, that will include more full-time equivalent students than the university receives funding for, with Davis estimating that more than 16,000 students will pass through UFV campuses this year. UFV has campuses and locations in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Hope, Agassiz, Mission and in Chandigarh, India. “In terms of space, we are over-capacity as well, especially in Abbotsford where we are at about 128 per cent of our utilization rate for our facilities.” Davis said that means the university has to plan carefully to “squeeze faculty, staff and students into every space we’ve got.” He said this often means faculty members share offices and the university must come up with “creative timetabling” in order to make a workable schedule for the greatest number of students in the space and time available. Most of the programs at UFV have already been filled, though a list remains on the university’s website of the programs still accepting applications. ‘It’s a challenge, more and more every year, trying to meet the incredible demand here in the Valley, and doing so with fewer dollars from public funding.”

Staff and students prepare for the school year at the University of the Fraser Valley. The university is once again facing a strain on capacity for students and space. Davis explained that tuition rates are subject to the rate of inflation and cannot be raised to make up funding. Currently, about half of UFV’s funding comes from the government, a quarter from tuition and the other quarter has to be “made up creatively.” Davis said UFV needs to be entrepreneurial to bring in revenue, while supporting the direction and educational programs of the institution. Of the students from the Fraser Valley who elect to go on to post-secondary education, about 70 per cent choose UFV, and that popularity and demand pushes the university to accommodate the needs of Valley students. Davis said this year the university will build a new student centre – a $15-million project – which will begin construction on Sept. 12. “This will help alleviate some of the crunch,” he said, adding that the space will provide room for students and offices. UFV also received funding for a new

Davis said there are also new programs planned to come in the next year, including a bachelor of arts in economics, a secondary school option in teacher’s education, and starting this fall, a bachelor of arts in global development studies, which Davis said is already in high demand. For the many students and staff who travel between UFV campuses, Davis said their lives will be made easier by a new shuttle bus that transports students throughout the day, and the project will help keep cars off the roads. “It’s a long time in coming and we hope it’s a great success.”

Stabbing victim stumbles into local business

When the staff at the Kosmetae Academy of Spa Aesthetics and Hair Design came to work on Thursday, they couldn’t have imagined it would end with a bloody stabbing victim at their door. Yet that’s what they were going to experience. At approximately 1:30 p.m., a scuffle broke out in the parking lot of the Dahlstrom Centre strip mall, located at 32700 George Ferguson Way. According to police, a 49-year-old Abbotsford man was stabbed in the abdomen. Bleeding and needing help, he stumbled his way to Kosmetae, entered the local business and yelled for help. Staff acted quickly, calling 911. Police taped off large area of the parking lot and began questioning witnesses while medical teams rushed the victim to a waiting helicopter to be transported to hospital. It wasn’t long before investigation teams established that a 32-year-old suspect was on the loose. About three hours later, police arrested the man without incident. “From what we’ve been told, the two parties that were involved in the dispute know each other,” said Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald. He added that both the victim and the suspect are known to police. Macdonald praised the quick action of the Kosmetae staff. “The staff did a remarkable job of dealing with a traumatic injury and contacting emergency services. They did all the right things in a challenging situation.”

Jake Rudolph will take up the position of Abbotsford’s new deputy city manager, beginning on Oct. 10. The position of deputy city manager was created by city manager George Murray after the city announced restructuring efforts in June. At that time, Murray said the individual would take over leadership roles for a number of departments, including finance and corporate services, economic development and property services. “We are extremely pleased to welcome (Rudolph) to the City of Abbotsford,” said Murray. “He has a solid reputation and a keen understanding of the issues facing local governments today and will be an asset to us as city hall continues to evolve.” Rudolph has been the chief adRUDOLPH ministrative officer for the City of Pitt Meadows for 10 years. In his 30-year career in local and regional government he has worked in four different provinces. Rudolph attained his MBA, masters in planning, and executive leadership certificate from Harvard University. He has also attended St. Mary’s University, Dalhousie and the University of New Brunswick. He currently serves as co-chair on the board for the Metro Vancouver Integrated Emergency Management Committee, and has previously been the chair of the Metro Vancouver City Administrators Committee, among other community positions. Rudolph will be responsible for overseeing a significant portion of the City of Abbotsford’s $260 million budget and 800 employees.

Bugs on the windshield, raindrops, dirt... but a skateboarder? Abbotsford Police received an unusual call at approximately 5:15 p.m. last Monday. The woman on the line called in the incident “a little bit strangely,” according to Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald. The 47-year-old was driving her Volkswagen in the 2800 block of Babich Street when she said a skateboarder “fell out of the sky” and landed on her windshield. “Upon investigation, we determined that essentially that’s what happened,” said MacDonald. The 19-year-old skateboarder had set up a jump ramp, hit it at high speed and went airborne. His first point of contact was the woman’s car. There were only minor injuries in the incident. According to MacDonald, in addition to picking up the cost of damage to the vehicle, the skateboarder received a “stern talking to” from police.

A 12-year-old girl is nursing a broken arm after falling out of a second-storey window on Wednesday night. Abbotsford Police and B.C. ambulance services were called out to a home in the 6200 block of Swanson Street at approximately 7 p.m. The girl was visiting a friend at the home when the accident occurred. According to Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald, the two friends were playing a game in the living room when the visitor went behind the couch. “She moves behind the couch and attempts to brace herself against the window.” However, the window was open. When police arrived, the girl was conscious and talking but visibly injured. She was transported to hospital to treat her arm.

to increase my crossing occasions. “But,” she pointed out as we inched our way towards the wedding anniversary party and new beach house debut “now three couples we know have beach houses just across the border (and my son and family have a cabin at Mt. Baker) maybe we want to cross more often.” So, as we crept towards foreign soil I watched what was happening in the lane adjacent, and noted that when the cars got to the check-in booth, they didn’t go through any quicker than those in my line. The difference was, there were vastly far few vehicles that had Nexus clearance, and so they did not encounter the lengthy waits the rest of us plebeians suffered. Since time is money, or at least opportunities lost to do something else, I figured why not? Better to spend 30 minutes on anything other than sitting in a car, the motor idling, coming up with thoughts of what I could have done with that time. Perhaps I’ll even renew my interest in

zipping down to Bellingham to buy stuff I don’t need. Additionally, I’ve even been told (unconfirmed I must note) that a Nexus holder can bring back two bottles of wine, without penalty, on each trip.

If cheap wine isn’t an incentive, well …. Then again, those of you who cross the border on a regular basis know all of that, and more. But despite the convenience of a quicker crossing that Nexus would bring, if I

get around to receiving a pass, the time thing still overrides what I see as cost savings from shopping in the U.S. I suppose if you have nothing else to do, then a few hours in Bellingham can be worthwhile. On the other hand, and not that I’m that great a homer, every nickel (since we don’t have pennies any more) spent in the U.S. is a nickel not going into our economy. Yet with ever-increasing taxes and ridiculously high gasoline prices on this side of the line, can I really blame budget-conscious people living only a few miles from economic opportunity for not taking advantage? All that said, and to avoid what I expect will be unrelenting badgering until I do, I will be applying for a Nexus pass. Beware, folks with beach houses, I like my martinis shaken not stirred, and if you offer too many you’ll also be providing a bedroom for the night. No â€˜right locationâ€™ for proposed housing for Abby homeless There is no â€œright locationâ€? (for the proposed housing for homeless). I would even be leery of suggesting that a â€œbest locationâ€? exists. There are good locations and bad locations; locations that have good points and bad points, strengths and weaknesses, advantages and drawbacks. But a â€œright locationâ€? for Abbotsford Community Services proposed first-stage housing does not exist, and to pursue the right location is to chase a mirage. The only actual existence the right location has is in the context of the right location being one anywhere Not In My Back Yard. â€œI am not against [insert name of project under discussion] it is just this is not the â€˜right locationâ€™ for it,â€? sounds so much more politically correct and so much less egocentric than NIMBY. It has been repeatedly stated that Abbotsford has a critical need for the proposed housing, and that those who op-

pose the ACS proposal are not against this type of housing in the right location â€“ saidÂ right location being in somebody elseâ€™s backyard. Â Which is why, no doubt, it has not been stated where this mythical right location is. The truth is that if you choose any location in Abbotsford for the proposed housing, I can give you 10 solid reasons that it is not the right location. Abbotsford has a critical need for first stage housing â€“ assuming the city and citizens want to pursue an approach to reducing the number of homeless on the streets that has been demonstrated to be effective. Thatâ€™s an assumption I freely admit has a high probability of being wrong, given the reaction by city council and citizens to the ACS proposal. A reaction which provides no evidence of any desire to stop chasing the homeless around Abbotsford until ... what? The homeless fall down a rabbit hole and join Alice in Wonderland?

Symphony seeks new musicians

The Fraser Valley Symphony is celebrating its 30th season of music. The long established group is seeking new members in the violin, viola and percussion sections, but will welcome inquiries from other interested musicians. What began as a rivalry between two of B.C.’s best running backs in their age group morphed into grudging admiration and then friendship, to the point where this past summer, the two were training partners as they prepped for the season. “It’s great,” said Irons, “because we push each other to do better than we can do on our own.” Irons and Cummings won’t have to wait long to measure themselves against one another in a game – the T-Wolves head across town to face the Hawks this Friday (7 p.m. kickoff, Mouat Field) as the varsity season gets going in earnest. “I’m always impressed with Abbotsford – how many great football players we develop at all the schools,” said Rick MacDonald, who coordinates the Bateman football program. Irons has already drawn full-ride offers from the Ohio University Bobcats and the Portland State Vikings, but he’s holding out for an offer from a Pac-12 program. “He’s got a great combination of power and speed,” Hawks coach Denis Kelly said of Irons. “It’s just a matter of pointing him in the right direction, and he takes care of the rest.” Cummings is also coming off a stellar season – despite missing three games with a separated shoulder, he finished second in AA rush yards, racking up 1,354 yards and 15 TDs on just 108 carries. He attended football camps at Oregon State, Nevada, Yale, Harvard, and Dartmouth this summer, and it’s no accident so many Ivy League schools were on his itinerary – his academic average is 90 per cent. Asked what makes Cummings such a special talent, T-Wolves head coach Alfred Brathwaite doesn’t skimp on superlatives. “Heart, drive, enthusiasm, ambition – and the list could go on,” he said. “Anything it takes to be good, he’s doing.” Both Mouat and Bateman boast plenty of talent beyond the running back position. The Hawks, ranked No. 4 in AAA, have four players on the preliminary roster for the B.C. U18 team which will participate in the Football University International Games in San Antonio in January – Irons, Levi Hua (guard/defensive tackle), Jake Firlotte (receiver/defensive back) and Clovis Lumeka (fullback/linebacker). As for the T-Wolves, QB Tanner Friesen, receiver Daniel Mills and Grade 11 RB Austen Zacher give Brathwaite the skillposition ingredients for an explosive offence. Magee, Francis Berry Aug 17, 1919 - Aug 15, 2013 Francis Berry Magee, a long time resident of Abbotsford, passed away on August 15, just 2 days short of his 94th birthday. Frank was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on August 17, 1919. His family moved to the Interior of BC when he was 4, settling in the Salmon Arm area at Gleneden, near Tappen. Frank joined the RCAF in 1942 and served in Bomber Command in heavy Lancasters. Between the fall of 1943 and March 1944, his crew carried out multiple ops over Europe. When ND641 was shot down March 24/25, 1944, Frank was rescued and hidden for months by the courageous men and women of the Dutch and Belgian underground; he later repaid this kindness by sponsoring the emigration to Canada of his primary rescuer, the late Hank Van Geuns. After the war, Frank had a long career in municipal administration in Abbotsford and Maple Ridge BC, retiring in 1984. He and his late wife Vera enjoyed many years at Mill Lake Estates prior to moving to Osoyoos in 2008. Frank is pre-deceased by his son John (1995) and his wife Vera (2012) and is survived by his loving daughters Roena (Ken) and Verna (John). He had a long and honourable life and we will miss him. The wonderful care of the staff at Mariposa Gardens in Osoyoos for the last few years is greatly appreciated by the family.

He was predeceased by his brother, Stuart in 2006 and his sister, Jean in 2012. He proudly served in the Canadian Forces (RCAF) from 1941 until his retirement as a Warrant Officer in 1970. The family sincerely thanks our many friends, his doctors and the staff at Abbotsford Regional Hospital for all of their kindness. It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Gord on August 28, 2013 at the age of 59 years after a courageous battle with brain cancer. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Barb of 27 years; his mother Margery; sister Wendy; brother Jim; niece Kimberly and nephew Daniel. Gord also leaves behind his three best friends, Harley, Ringo and Muffin. He was predeceased by his father Don. Gord loved the outdoors, was obsessed; with golf and also enjoyed hiking, biking and kayaking He was a long time employee of the Ministry of Transport and Emil Anderson Maintenance. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him including his favorite mom-in-law Ann. Barb would like to thank everyone who took the time to visit and enjoy a cold beer on the patio with Gord. William Iten, known as Billy to those who grew up with him, peacefully passed away August 26, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer. As a second generation pioneer dairy farmer he left a legacy. Survived by wife June, children Debra (Dave), Cindy (Doug), Joe, Lance (Connie), Sean (Valerie), Jarret (Monica), and 13 grandchildren. Bill was a world traveller who loved his family and spending time with old friends. A Celebration of Life will take place at the Rancho, September 5 from 1:00 - 4:00. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Cyrus Centre in memory of Bill Iten.
