Emails among senior Abbotsford Police officers show a disappointing attitude towards the city’s homeless, according to a local advocate. But the Abbotsford Police Department says the comments in emails are not directed towards the homeless, or the issue of homelessness. The emails were released following a Freedom of Information request by Pivot Legal Society, a not-forprofit organization based in Vancouver. Pivot lawyers are currently representing homeless individuals from Abbotsford in lawsuits that allege police illegally destroyed their personal property. Pivot will also represent a group on behalf of Abbotsford’s homeless, led by the 5 and 2 Ministries, in a human rights complaint against the city and police regarding alleged harassment and discrimination. A July 5 email from Const. Ian MacDonald, communications officer for the Abbotsford Police Department, to police chief Bob Rich and deputy chiefs Rick Lucy and Len Goerke, states that a French CBC reporter told MacDonald a lawyer was expected to announce a class-action lawsuit against the City of Abbotsford, Continued on A3

Draper ‘disappointed’ by comments

Very John Grisham novel – say The Litigators.” Ward Draper, executive director of 5 and 2 Ministries, a local organization that supports and provides services to Abbotsford’s homeless, said he is “disappointed” by the comments made in the emails by police, adding that Abbotsford’s leadership has a “constant disregard for the marginalized and vulnerable in our community.” But MacDonald said that to read the emails as insensitive against the homeless or Pivot Legal Society is a misreading.
He said the emails regarding the class-action lawsuit are from July 5, about two weeks before Pivot announced on July 24 in a press release its plans to file lawsuits. MacDonald said the emails pertain to a previous report that a forprofit lawyer was planning to file a class-action suit and seek damages, which MacDonald said is very different from Pivot’s intent. “{Pivot is} driven more from a human-rights standpoint, as opposed to a lawyer who says that they are going to be seeking damages on behalf of these people.” But Draper is concerned by other related emails from police. The July 5 emails continue, with an email from Rich stating: “Let us know if you think of something funny! (Please.)” Among other emails, Goerke wrote: “I will freely range hunting and pecking for something you can cluck about.” MacDonald added that to say the emails are insensitive to the homeless is also out

directed at homeless people... They were directed at a lawsuit, not the Pivot claim.” But Draper said that to see Rich, the chief of police, making a comment about the potential damages of the lawsuit being “hurt feelings” is insensitive to the homeless. “He’s talking about a
population that has not ceased to be tormented by our civic government… and this is what he has to say?” Police were cleared of any wrongdoing in the chicken manure incident after internal city documents revealed multiple departments were involved in the decision to dump the manure, but police played no role in the decision. MacDonald said in hindsight, police should not have made puns, but hopes that people put the comments in context. Draper said he was pleased to see police were not involved in the manure dump and he understands the need for humour in the workplace, but the comments are “callous.” Draper said Rich has made comments in the past about the need to disperse the homeless in Abbotsford, and the emails add “to the disheartening attitude of our leadership and the total disregard for the vulnerable in Abbotsford.”

Of three senior staff that have recently left city hall, only one received settlement pay, according to documents obtained by the Abbotsford News through Freedom of Information requests. Jay Teichroeb, general manager of economic development and planning, and Pat Soanes, general manager of finance, both left the City of Abbotsford in June. At that time, city manager George Murray declined to comment on whether severance would be paid, or whether they left the city voluntarily. Documents released by the city are missing figures which were withheld under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, but showed that the total

monies owed to Soanes are $101,187.29. That number includes $12,636.73 from areas such as vacation pay and remaining wages, with $6,747.30 listed under wages in lieu of notice. A separate document shows that $88,550.56 was awarded to Soanes as a settlement agreement. Following Soanes’ departure, her position was eliminated from city hall. The documents show that the total monies owed to Teichroeb is $18,796.79

Gordon Ferguson, general manager of bylaw enforcement, left the city in July. The documents show that the total monies owed to Ferguson is $28,102.54. Of that amount, $15,954.40 is listed under wages in lieu of notice. City manager George
Murray has declined to comment on the payments to the three departing managers, stating that he is unable to comment on personnel or legal matters. In 2012, Teichroeb was the third highest paid staff member at city hall, making $205,669 that year. Soanes received $185,809 last year, and Ferguson was paid $106,119. In June, Murray said that nine management and one union positions were being cut from city hall, as part of a “new organizational structure,” which Murray said will save the city more than $1.25 million annually. Murray took the position of city manager in February after the former city manager, Frank Pizzuto, resigned in December. Pizzuto received a $321,000 payout.

A Hindu priest’s “fall from grace” after being convicted of sex offences involving two teenage girls should be considered when determining his sentence, the man’s lawyer stated last Wednesday in B.C. Supreme Court. Brij Mohan said his client, Karam Vir, has suffered greatly since the charges were laid and should serve a prison sentence of between 18 months and two years less a day. “Mr. Vir’s very public fall from grace, the shame he has expressed, his loss of employment, his loss of any future in this and any other country should be considered when determining his sentence,” Mohan said at Vir’s sentencing hearing in Chilliwack. Crown counsel Sylvia Domaradzki sought a jail term of 3 1/2 to four years, saying Vir abused his position of trust, has not taken responsibility for his crimes, and has refused counselling and/ or other treatment. “Mr. Vir’s stance does affect any prospect for rehabilitation that there may be,” she said. Vir, 33, was convicted in May of two counts of touching a young person for a sexual purpose and one count of sexual assault. He has been incarcerated since that time. The charges stem from incidents that

The girls were under 18 at the time of the offences and did not know each other. They each met Vir, who came to Canada from India on a work visa, on separate occasions and established a friendship with him. Over time, these friendships extended into sexual advances from Vir that included
kissing and groping the girls, attempting to have sex with one of them, and exposing himself. All the incidents took place in the temple. The allegations were brought to Abbotsford Police by other members of the temple, and Vir was charged in November 2010. In making her sentencing recommendation, Domaradzki said that although the complainants did not provide victim impact statements, the effect of the crimes was
evident in their testimony. At the start of the trial, an application was approved for both young women to testify via closed-circuit TV because they feared facing Vir in an open court and sharing intimate details of the offences. One stated in an affidavit that she also feared being shunned by the Indo-Canadian community. “The impact of (these crimes) … was repeatedly shown through their evidence,” Domaradzki said. Mohan acknowledged that Vir abused his authority and should be adequately sentenced but, regardless of his time in prison, the result is the same – Vir will be sent back to India upon his release and will never be allowed back in Canada. “He just wants to serve his sentence and be on his way,” Mohan said. He said, prior to the charges, Vir was held in such high regard in the temple that people would touch his feet to receive his blessing. Mohan said Vir came to Canada to support his family, including his widowed mother. “His family’s dreams of being lifted out of the cycle of poverty have been dashed to the ground.” Justice Neill Brown is scheduled to rule on the sentencing on Sept. 4.
Bevan Avenue Wells Operation Notice The City of Abbotsford received approval to increase the capacity of four existing water wells in order to meet peak demand for water during summer months. The wells are located in the southwest corner of Mill Lake Park. The approved pumping capacity is 290 L/s. A total of 2,505 million litres of water may be drawn from these wells annually, between May and September. For the 2013 season, the Bevan Avenue wells are expected to begin operating from early June onward, as needed. Driver charged in fatal crash Man, 23, turns himself in to police

A 23-year-old Abbotsford man has been charged in relation to the fatal crash that took place Aug. 6 on Townline Road just south of Olund Road. Sgt. Elly Wright said the driver of the red Acura involved in the crash, which killed 19-year-old Gurgan Sidhu, showed up on Wednesday at the Abbotsford Police Department with his lawyer. Maninderjit Brar was arrested and later released on bail with conditions to not consume alcohol and to keep the peace and be of good behavior. He has been charged with criminal negligence causing death, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm. Brar is next slated to appear in Abbotsford provincial court on Sept. 19. Four men ranging in age from 19 to 25 were in the vehicle when it went off the road and into a ditch at about 2:15 a.m. on Aug. 6. When police arrived, all the men were out of the vehicle, and Sidhu was found on the road. He
was taken to hospital in critical condition and died a short time later. Police said that immediately following the crash, three men had approached a resident in the area and asked her to drive Sidhu to hospital instead of calling first responders. The neighbour then called emergency services. In the days following the incident, police said the three surviving men were not disclosing who was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash. Wright said the investigation into the incident is continuing.

Missing man found The Abbotsford Police Department has confirmed that Ontario police have made contact with Nathan Point, a 23-year-old man who was reported missing in Abbotsford just after 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9. Abbotsford Police issued a press release last Wednesday, stating that Point is staying with an acquaintance in Ontario. Point was reported missing after he did
not appear for work on Aug. 9, which police said was out of character for him. Police had obtained an image of him using an ATM at Clearbrook Road and South Fraser Way at 6:10 that morning. Point does not have a vehicle, and police said at that time there was a possibility that he had gone to areas of the province east of Abbotsford.

IOC should take a stand
Actor George Takei recently initiated a petition to have the Sochi Olympics moved from Russia to Canada while U.S. President Barack Obama has cancelled a summit with Russia’s Vladimir Putin. While Obama’s reasons for cancelling the summit are many, one of them is Russia’s crackdown on civil rights… namely new laws that almost make homosexuality a crime. John Baird, Canada’s foreign affairs minister, has also denounced Russia’s controversial new anti-gay law as hateful. While Baird, Takei and Obama have taken a stand, it’s time that the International Olympic Committee took one too. Too often the powers-that-be look the other way when dealing with countries rife with human rights abuses. Or, they rationalize that in doing business with such countries, the abusers will see the folly of their ways and change.
That simply doesn’t happen. When it comes to the Olympics, the IOC is the first to tout itself as a worldwide organization touting inclusiveness, etc. In fact, the second principle stated in the Olympic Charter reads: “The goal of Olympism is to place sport at the service of the harmonious development of humankind, with a view to promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity.” So what does the IOC have to say about Russia instituting homophobic laws? “The IOC has received assurances from the highest level of government in Russia that the legislation will not affect those attending or taking part in the Games.” In other words, hold your nose and dive right in. – Black Press

Other Hand Last summer I raised the issue of regulations being considered that would result in the metering, and thus fees to government, of private water wells. This summer, thanks to Nestlé Waters, the issue has moved from the “let’s try to bury this” at the municipal level, to province-wide awareness relating to what is assumed to be ‘unfettered’ use of ground water. Nestlé, apparently, annually pumps some 265 million litres out of a well in Hope to sell in bottles throughout the country, and perhaps internationally. This amount of water, by the way, is roughly equivalent to the volume of 10 Olympic-size swimming pools which, knowing how much it rains in Hope, doesn’t seem that much. However, a huge multi-national taking ‘our water for free’ has raised a hue and cry amongst those who derive their water from a city tap, though I’d also guess most
of them buy bottled water too. Why should we pay, when they get it for free is the refrain. They should be charged, and contribute to the tax stream, they say. Let’s look at the numbers. A bottle of water costs a buck a litre more or less at the retail level. That means Nestlé gets about 17 cents a litre … the rest is made up of retail markups (and taxes). Thus to be fair, any kind of government levy on a litre of raw water couldn’t amount to more than a penny … a tax revenue flow of $2.65 million from Nestle. Not chump change I will admit, but by selling our water, possibly for international markets, we are placing ourselves on the proverbial slippery slope. For instance, what happens when one of the formerly highly touted run-of-river hydro projects discovers it can make more money selling ship-loads of water to foreign countries than it can by selling electricity. Whether the commercial revenue is 17 cents a litre, or more depending on who you sell it to, it equates to the price of oil at the wellhead, and you know how profitable Big Oil is. Factor in that water demand will only increase, thanks to climate change, and suddenly selling our water to foreign populations has great potential.
If government decides it must charge Nestlé (and they are not the only ones bottling B.C. water), how can it then deny anyone else the same precedential opportunity to sell our water from a private well? First Nestlé’s bottles, then tanker loads and then, perhaps, a pipeline to California or ???
This, by the way, isn’t new stuff despite Nestlé being made the bad guy in the past couple of weeks. The only way to stop all of that is simple. Ban export of our water, in any form or vessel including plastic bottles, outside our national boundaries. That avoids the slippery slope and negates the need for taxing and/or metering groundwater consumption (other than as a tax grab) because if large-scale commercial users are taxed, then individual private well owners likely will have to be charged as well. Government of course, based on the
premise that it is their water … like they control the rain and snow … and thus to save our water, they need to monitor, meter and charge us for it. This, by the way, isn’t new stuff despite Nestlé being made the bad guy in the past couple of weeks. The City of Abbotsford, in engineering report ENG 48-2012 (look it up on the city website), has considered metering private wells locally, probably based on the assumption that the province may be also considering same. When I commented about it a year ago, then city manager Frank Pizzuto responded in a letter to the editor saying “the City of Abbotsford has no plans to meter private wells, and it is unclear where this suggestion may have originated.” Well, it originated in ENG 48-2012 and the report is still in play, and now thanks to the Nestlé furor, owners of private wells across B.C. may soon find they don’t just own a water source but yet another revenue stream for villages, cities, regional districts and the province. Oh, and any tax on bottled water will be passed on to the consumer, an option not available to the homeowner on a well.

Culling the crows is not the right solution
Debbie Mendini surely refers to the human race when she expresses the need for culling the crows she has taken exception to (Abbotsford News July 25). I agree that predation is a sorry and sad thing but she has total disregard for the most ruthless predator of them all, us. Don’t blame the crows, Debbie, when we are surely partly responsible for not taking care of our garbage correctly. We also multiply more and faster when living is good, taking away the necessary space and freedom from all animals, never ever taking their very valid needs into account, and eliciting undesirable behavior from them that would otherwise probably rarely be exhibited. (Obviously I am not referring only to crows with that sentence.) Incidentally, aside from the nasty, preda-
tory aspect of culling them, it would be a totally useless exercise, for I have read from many
sources over the years that other crows would just take their place. Something to be glad
about: they clean up dead animals. Surely we have the unfair advantage. Here’s
a thought, maybe we could change our attitude and learn about them.
They are so intelligent. Out-witting them would not be easy but worth trying. Is an undesirable

Lack of care called ‘murder’
Re Vikki Hopes’ article, “Living will lawsuit launched” (Aug 13.) The Fraser Health Authority contains the word health in its name. It seems that members of the Margot Bentley family want the Fraser Health Authority to murder her by no longer spoon feeding her. Let’s be clear. That would be to intentionally cause her death. To intentionally cause the death of another – except in self-defence – is murder. Whether the murder is done quickly with a gun, knife or any blunt instrument, it is still murder. To intentionally kill by starvation and/or dehydration is still murder, but in slow motion. The Fraser Health Authority is absolutely correct in continuing to spoonfeed Margot Bentley. It should never be the case that “If we can’t cure you, well – if you like – we’ll kill you.” George Bochenek

Cause of death confirmed
BC Coroners Service investigates Lemaitre case The BC Coroners Service has confirmed that the death of former RCMP media spokesperson Sgt. Pierre Lemaitre was the result of suicide. Coroner Barb McLintock said in a press release issued Thursday afternoon that emergency personnel were called to Lemaitre’s home in Abbotsford on the morning of July 29 but they could not resuscitate him. She said the Coroners Service is continuing its investigation into the matter, but will not be disclosing any further details at this time. “The preliminary investigation has found no evidence of foul play,” McLintock said. When the investigation is complete, a public coroner’s report will be issued. “The BC Coroners Service expresses its sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Mr. Lemaitre,” McLintock said. A memorial service for Lemaitre was held Sunday in Langley. Lemaitre, who joined the RCMP in 1984, was most recently working for the E division traffic services. He was a former media spokesperson who provided the first public statements following the Taser-related death of Robert Dziekanski at Vancouver Airport in 2007. Lemaitre testified in April 2009 at the Braidwood public inquiry into Dziekanski’s death.

The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) is investigating a home invasion that took place Wednesday afternoon. Sgt. Elly Wright said, at about 3:50 p.m., a 16-year-old boy opened the door to his townhouse in the 32400 block of King Road and two suspects pushed their way in. The two men then escorted the victim and his friend to an upstairs bedroom, and the culprits stole money, jewelry and electronics from the home. The thieves fled in a dark two-door compact car with a fistsized rust stain above the rear wheel well on the driver’s side. Wright said no weapon was used, and the two boys were not harmed. Both suspects are described as Caucasian men about 30 years old. One is about 5’ 10” with an average build, short brown hair and scabs on his face. He was clean-shaven and wearing a red hoodie. An Abbotsford man is among three people who face several charges in relation to a violent home invasion that took place in Aldergrove on July 29. The man cannot be named until charges are formally laid. Two 17-year-old Langley boys also face charges. Police are saying the robbery in the 2800 block of 273 Street was targeted and related to a prior drug-dealing relationship. At about 8:40 p.m. on July 29, police were called to an Aldergrove townhouse when several neighbours saw three males wearing hoodies and masks kick in the door. A woman was then heard yelling for someone to call the police. Langley RCMP Cpl. Holly
Marks said the 26-year-old female victim was home with her mother and five-year-old son at the time of the invasion and recognized her attackers. Witnesses said two of the suspects had baseball bats while the third carried a handgun. One of the suspects struck the woman in the head with a baseball bat. The victim’s mother, 51, was punched in the face and threatened with a handgun. The five-year-old was uninjured, said Marks. The three assailants fled in an older grey vehicle. Police arrived in less than five minutes to find the victim bleeding from a cut above her eye. She and her mother were taken to hospital for treatment. The Abbotsford man and one
of the teens was arrested. Police have recommended charges against the 22-yearold, but Crown hasn’t approved those yet. The youth, who can’t be named due to provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was charged with break and enter and assault causing bodily harm. He has been released from custody and will next appear in Surrey provincial court on Aug. 28. A warrant has been issued for the second youth, who is charged with break and enter, assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon, disguising his face with intent to commit an offence, possession of a weapon and uttering threats.
Driver airlifted after T-bone crash
A 21-year-old man from Chilliwack was airlifted to hospital as a precautionary measure for possible head injuries following a collision in Abbotsford on Monday morning.

Supportive recovery home requires approval from city

LIFE Recovery Association is planning to re-establish a recovery home on Melmar Avenue, but is seeking approval to operate close to another recovery home and a school. The city’s bylaw prohibits supportive recovery homes from being established within 200 metres of a school or an existing recovery home. The proposed site is 180 metres from a school and 88 metres from another recover home. The home had previously been used as a supportive recovery facility from 2008 to 2011, operated by the Psalm 23 Transition Society, but approval for the operation cannot be transferred to a different operator. While run by the transition society, the house was given the necessary upgrades, such as fire exits and a sprinkler system, in order to meet the requirements of supportive housing. LIFE Recovery’s program provides rehabilitation for women dealing with substance abuse issues and has been operating since Feb. 1999. They currently operate a home in Abbotsford, and are now looking to create an “alumni home,” where women who have already been through the recovery program would have an affordable place to live for about one year. The city’s policy would allow up to 10 residents in the home, though LIFE Recovery would only plan on having five women in care, in order to give each woman her own bedroom. The house would be supervised 24/7. A letter from LIFE Recovery to the city states that because they operate an existing recovery home, they will be able to connect the women in the alumni home with staff and addictions counsellors. The women will also be able to work shifts at the organization’s thrift store, LIFE’s Second Chance, on South Fraser Way. City council agreed to allow the bylaw variance to go to a public consultation. A meeting will be held between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on August 20 at Dormick Park Elementary School in order to inform citizens of the area as to the plans for the project. The application will then return to council for consideration.

Abbotsford athletes made their mark on the national stage at the Canada Summer Games, w h i ch wrapped up last week in Sherbrooke, Que. The local contingent brought home a combined seven medals and registered a series of top-10 finishes at the Games, which bring together upand-coming athletes from across the country. Prominent Canada Summer Games alumni include Steve Nash (basketball), Alexandre Despatie (diving), Bruny Surin (100-metre dash) and Adam Van Koeverden (kayaking). • Chelsea Jenner won a gold medal with the B.C. women’s softball team, which turned in a truly dominant performance. The provincial squad thumped Manitoba 9-1 via the mercy rule in the title game, with left fielder Jenner going 1-for-4 with one run scored. • Matt Dignan was golden on the wrestling mat, finishing atop the 54-kilogram men’s division. He added a silver medal with B.C. in the team competition, along with fellow Abbotsford grapplers Nishanpreet Randhawa and Rajin Gill. • Tiffany Matteazzi took silver in the women’s javelin competition, registering a throw of 47.50m. The Abbotsford golfer carded rounds of 69, 68, 68 and 71 to end up at eight under par for the tournament, eight strokes back of winner Peter Malnati. Hadwin’s sixth top25 finish of the 2013 season was worth $4,400, and he sits 64th on the Web.com Tour money list with $76,182 in earnings. The top 25 at the end of the regular season earn PGA Tour cards for 2014, while the top 75 qualify for a fourtournament playoff series which yields an additional 25 PGA Tour cards. They opened the playoffs with a 26-7 quarter-final triumph over Brazil, but were eliminated from title contention thanks to a 17-7 defeat to Argentina in the semis. Facing France in the bronze medal game, the Maple Leafs rallied to win 26-14.

TED SLANEFF Born in Winnepeg Man,. March 14, 1924, late of Abbotsford BC. Passed away on Aug 13, 2013 at the age of 89. Married for 67 years to Bernice Slaneff, who passed away March 15, 2011 at the age of 83. They had 3 sons, Richard (predeceased) his wife Ida, Ken (Judy), Laurie (Suzanne). His grandchildren, are as follows, Andrea, Amanda, Jason, Trisha, Dallas, Jessica, Matthew. Great-grandchildren are Lauren, Isabella, Aysha, A`lexi, Zoe, Mckenna, Bronson, Lola, Bryden, Ethan, Madison, Brielle. Ted will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He will be remembered for his deep appreciation for his spiritual devotion to Jehovah God and lived a faithful life. Other loves in his life were his family, golf, entertaining friends and his love of dancing. A memorial service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah`s Witnesses 1672 Salton Road Abbotsford, BC on Aug. 24, 2013 at 2:00 pm.
It is with profound sadness that we announce John Boucher passed from this life to be with his Lord and Saviour on August 10, 2013 at the age of 55. He fought his battle with Bone Marrow cancer bravely and courageously without complaint and thought of others as he took part in research study to help others beneÀt from his BOUCHER experience. John was born to Joseph and Ida Boucher (nee Szypa) in Iserlohn, Germany on March 16, 1958. His father was in the Canadian Military, stationed in Germany and returned with his family to New Brunswick April 1958. They moved to Chilliwack, BC where his father was stationed at CFB Chilliwack. John was an industrious boy who began working early in his life with odd jobs and summer harvesting. He was a hardworking and dedicated employee working in the dairy industry with his father-in-law, Erwin Braun, in the hog industry with Scarlet Maple Farms, then with Ritchie Smith Farms Ltd and in the poultry industry at Bradner Farms. He worked like it was his own farm and took pride and satisfaction in making them the best they could be. While at Ritchie Smith Farms, he also served on the Agricultural Workforce Policy Board for BC to improve the working conditions for employees of that industry. He met his sweetheart, Pam, in Grade 11 at CSSS in 1975 and they were married August 18, 1979 at Christ Lutheran church (CLCC). John reafÀrmed his Christian faith at CLCC and was very involved with serving the church. He was a devout and faithful servant of Christ, ‘not because I have to, but because I feel called to,’ he would say. He was Sunday School Superintendent at CLCC and served on the Church Council on the Board of Deacons, the Board of Trustees, the Worship Committee, as Chairman of the congregation as well as serving as Chair of the Call Committee. In 2004, John was elected to the BC Synod Council for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, to serve in various roles as Council member for the Lower Fraser Valley Conference, Stewardship Committee and Vice Chair in 2007 to 2010. In between his many roles in the workforce and community, John was a devoted family man who loved Àshing, gardening, cooking and reading. He will be sadly missed by his wife and soul mate, Pam; sons, Byron (Jordan and daughter Jamie) and Jordan; father Joe, mother Ida, sisters Denise, and Jackie (Ananta) as well as mother-in-law Alide Braun, sister-in-laws Linda Palmer (Joe), Gisela Davidson (Roy) and brother-in-law Ralph Braun (Maureen) and many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and a huge number of friends and colleagues he came in contact with throughout his lifetime. He is predeceased by his father-in-law Erwin Braun, nephew Adrian Palmer and grandparents Wilfred and Elodie Boucher and Johanna Kappers-Szypa. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, 9460 Charles St. Chilliwack, on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 1:00 pm. LAPINSKY, Lyle R. Lyle R. Lapinsky, born July 21, 1939, passed away in Abbotsford on August 13, 2013 at the age of 74 after a long battle with cancer. Lyle is survived by his wife of 54 years Gertie (Romberg), daughter Debbie (Tom) Dosmann, son Todd (Elsie) Lapinsky, daughter Tamara Ritchie, son Leon (Kelly) Lapinsky, son Lance (Carly) Lapinsky, 17 grandchildren, and 18 greatgrandchildren. Lyle was predeceased by parents Leon & Mary and siblings Lloyd and Joyce. Lyle was born and grew up in Abbotsford. He met Gertie at the Sumas roller skating rink and they were married in Abbotsford in 1959, where they raised their 5 children. Lyle worked for Woodward’s for 27 years. Lyle will be remembered for his devotion to family and his love of fishing and Western movies. he eighth annual Historic Downtown Abbotsford Car Show is back bigger than ever with more parking for the classic cars and hot rods, plus a new location for the free stage show at the intersection of West Railway and Essendene. This layout is the same as for the Berrybeat Festival. Folks are invited to visit many of the unique and trendy stores and restaurants located throughout downtown. Great food and hospitality are just steps away from the cars on display: a great family outing! On stage and back by popular demand is the Blues Brothers Too, plus headlining the
Cam Hutchins photos stage again this year is David James’ “Almost Johnny Cash” and the Big River Band – Todd Sacerty, Colin Stevenson and Duncan Symonds. These song-and-dance tribute stars, with their high energy and antics, will not only be performing on stage but throughout the streets of Downtown Abbotsford. Blues Brothers Too performs signature songs, moves, and routines that will have you dancing in the street. David James’ “Almost Johnny Cash” with the Big River Band has performed for sold-out audiences throughout Canada and parts of the
U.S. Their main purpose is to perform and present the recordings of Johnny Cash, in the style and sound of the “Man In Black” himself. When you hear that familiar mighty voice and legendary deep dark tones, close your eyes and dare to compare. Opening this stage show this year and no stranger to the folks in the Fraser Valley, nor the Lower Mainland, is Randy Ketting-Oliver. One of his first appearances was on stage at the PNE at 11 years old. In the early days, he played and travelled, living out of a suitcase, with a number of bands. He played for a number of years on CBC
Radio and also with the Irish Rovers. His band “The Mainlanders” was once the youngest group/band to play the nightclub circuit thoughout B.C. Along with a full-time career as music director for a church in Yarrow, Ketting-Oliver can be heard during the week at Chances gaming centre in Abbotsford. Inspired by the life of a young boy named Matthew Story by

P
roceeds from the Historic Downtown Abbotsford Car Show will go to Matthew’s House, a facility that will provide respite care for children who live with complex health-care needs. The facility is currently under construction as part of the Dave Lede Campus of Care project underway on Marshall Road adjacent to Abbotsford Regional Hospital. Matthew’s House is slated to open this October. Construction crews are working on exterior finishing, while inside, crews are mudding and taping drywall and installing in-floor heating. Suppliers, architects, tradespeople and engineers have all contributed gifts of skill, time and resources to make this dream a reality. Matthew’s House was founded by Andrea and Doug Froese, whose son Matthew was born with severe brain damage and had many physical challenges. Matthew was confined to a wheelchair, and the Froeses wanted to provide a place where parents could get a break from the challenges of raising a child with severe disabilities.
Matthew’s House became part of the Campus of Care project in early 2010. Sadly, Matthew passed away in August of that year at the age of nine, but his legacy lives on. Up to five children at a time will be cared for in a state-of-the-art residence staffed by experienced caregivers. Medical necessities – such as full wheelchair accessibility and overhead track systems for transferring – will be complemented by a multi-sensory playroom and an outdoor playground. Overnight guest suites will allow family to remain close while taking a step back to refresh themselves. Matthew’s House is facilitated by Communitas Supportive Care Society, an Abbotsford-based service agency. The home is funded completely through the generous support of individuals and community partners. The Campus of Care also includes the Abbotsford Hospice Society’s Holmberg House – an adult hospice – and Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. ar show enthusiasts are in for a special treat at this year’s show! For those who are interested, you may indulge in assaulting your senses at the cacklefest demonstrations during the day. What is a cacklefest? It is a symphony of a number of nitro-burning dragsters, simultaneously firing together while sucking nitro methane at the pace of a jetliner! The term ‘cackle’ refers to the sound of nitro methane as it burns and explodes in the combustion chambers of
the big blocks as they idle at about 2000 RPM. Kelowna resident and oldtime racer, Mike Schewe, will be attending this year’s show with his trusted top fuel dragster ‘Dirty Edna’. Although his performance will not include any other dragsters firing at the same time, Mike assures us the feeling will be much the same. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience the thunder, smell and vibration of a 7000 horsepower beast, which you most often only see or hear about on TV. We run them
just to make some noise and remind people of how the sport used to be – take them on a nostalgia trip,” Schewe says. “Dirty Edna” is powered by a 500 Hemi with all the bells and whistles normally used by the pros. The only real difference is the dragster is not ‘race ready’ by the terms of NHRA”, says Schewe. “Their cars require the big bucks and crews to keep up with all the standards needed to be part of their association and safety technology required to go over 320 miles per hour”.

Sound of Music hits the right note Serving the community's musical needs for decades
F
or more than 15 years, Sound of Music has been a hub of activity in Abbotsford’s historic downtown. But the company’s history goes even farther back. Since 1965, Sound of Music has had seventeen different locations at different times from Victoria to Abbotsford, including a location in Seven Oaks Mall from 1974 to 1996. The family owned business bought their current location in 1998, a building in the downtown and that is where they will always be. Fifteen year’s later, the remaining location of the academy and store continues to thrive and plays a vital role in the revitalization of the downtown core, striving to bring more families into the area for lessons and instruments. “A business like this…things change, and it has to be reinvented,” said Dean Irving, owner of
Sound of Music, “We’ve done that three times, and it will happen again.” Sound of Music’s academy has ten instructors on staff who teach a variety of instruments in all styles. Lessons are tailored to the students own musical tastes. Students will learn the style of music they enjoy listening to, if that is what they want to learn. No matter what their students want to learn or how accomplished they are the teachers will help them achieve their goals. Our system of teaching is constantly adapting to the new styles of learning and creating innovative ways to encourage practice from our students. Stop in at the academy for a walk through if you or anyone you know quit lessons because “it wasn’t fun”, Sound of Music strives to make every lesson a fun experience. “Music helps the brain,” said Kathryn. “In a

t’s Carshow time in Historic Downtown Abbotsford. This year marks the 8th year for this event in our Downtown. Last year it became apparent that the event was bursting at the seams, so in response we have expanded the site to accommodate almost twice as many classic cars and hot rods. Come down and check out the vintage vehicles and fabulous hot rods on Montrose and Essendene Avenues Saturday, August 24th from 9am-3pm. You’ll find hundreds of gorgeous vehicles, non-stop free entertainment on stage, The Lee’s Jewellery Poker Walk and amazing deals in our restaurants, shops and boutiques. I must admit that until I met my husband 7 years ago and saw the “connection” he has with his 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Convertible (and he made sure I got all that absolutely correct), I didn’t really understand the whole hot rod/classic car world. Then we got married and became the “Brady Bunch” and were looking for a home to house our 5 children, like that wasn’t hard enough. Suddenly, I realized we also had to house his baby, the Oldsmobile. It all started to sink in. This car was truly a member of the family. It was the car his dad had given him when he was 14, they spent 2 years working on it

together. We can all imagine the memories that car holds for him. He tells me the car has a “throaty exhaust” and had an awesome stereo so he had personalized plates made that read “IM LOUD1”. The car is Jim’s first love. Jim moved 3500km away from his car for 15 years, but the love remained. His father kept his car for him and when his dad passed away, Jim had the car shipped to Canada. When I met Jim, and we were taking the step to join our families, it was pretty obvious I was going to have to take him with the car or not at all. Not being a car person myself, I didn’t really get it, his car is far from driveable now, and probably not worth the money to fix it, but the memories invested in her won’t allow him to give her up just yet. I’m pretty sure that late at night sometimes, he sneaks into the garage and just sits in the car and talks to her. Maybe making promises that one day he’ll fix her up again. He hauls out old pictures, like they are baby pictures and shows off how wonderful she looked. Honestly, in my untrained eyes, she looks exactly the same, she just doesn’t run. I have seen her run, when he has his buddies over and they do some fancy work, they can get her humming and rumbling, but certainly not street worthy. Who knows, maybe one day she will be sitting in the Historic Downtown Abbotsford Carshow and he can really show her off.

A street rod named “Merlot” Story by

ennis Kasper had a ’33 Roadster that Lyons wanted to buy and finish, but he could not convince Kasper to part with it. After waiting him out a year, Kasper’s attention fell on a Oldsmobile, so a deal was struck. After driving the ’33 extensively, including a road trip incorporating Puyallup, Spokane and Pleasanton, the building bug hit again. Lyons decided he wanted a 1951 Mercury convertible, and went searching for the right car. The prices seemed too high, and with the lack of aftermarket parts, his search was widened to other convertibles. At a swap meet in 2004, Lyons saw an unfinished 1940 Ford Convertible Wescott body in the parking area. The owner’s stall number was wrong so it took some major detective work to find the owner. Lyons was told it was totally complete and just needed final assembly and paint. The price was too high, so Lyons went home without the car, but after thinking it over for a couple of days and deciding to sell the ’33 Roadster, he called up the owner and offered just enough extra to buy the car. The car was complete with all the parts required to finish the car and the seller
had been into street rods for years, but had just finished restoring a Mustang and wanted to get out of street rods, so many parts were given to Lyons. It had a partially-boxed Ford frame which had been tubbed and had a Ford nine-inch rear-end with coilover shocks, a 351 Windsor with C6 tranny and Mustang II front end within small disc brakes. Wiring harness, gauges, and a new Wise Guy Seat and three grilles were provided – an Alumicraft custom grille was installed, also a ’39 grill from Bob Drake, and a ’39-’40 three-piece grille cast in pewter that needed to be chromed. Lyons looked at the assembly of pieces and the primered body and sold everything except the frame, rear-end, front suspension, Wiseguy seat and the body. Starting with a relatively clean slate, or at least a primered slate, he started to look for the correct pieces. Flush with cash from the sale of the parts, Lyons went looking for the correct parts to build a very cool ride. He was lucky to find a race-prepared 302 mill with fuel injection, blower and a OAD transmission for a great price. The block was about the only Ford part and all the rest of the engine was the best performance/race parts available. The coilovers were gone, replaced with Shockwave by Air-
ride Technologies. Twelve-inch fourpiston drilled-and-slotted Wilwood brakes provided the stopping, and the original ’40 Ford frame was now complete. The body was getting its share of work, and this particular Westcott body had been originally purchased by an enthusiast who bought all the first pressings of the Wescott factory. It was a custom body, having been channeled three inches and the hood sectioned

2.5 inches to give it a better look. The fenders were shortened (bobbed) and the running boards removed from the design. The original owner was getting on in years, then sold it. Lyons liked the look of the car, but liked running boards better, so he bought some steel ones from the Old Car Centre. Of course, the running boards did not fit, as the body was lowered over the frame during the
channeling process. Lyons fabricated special brackets to attach the running boards to the frame and Ron Latham, with his fiberglass skills, took the fenders and fixed the fiberglass to fit the running boards. Being a local dealer for American Autowire, he used a Highway 22 kit with keyless entry, shaved handles, power windows and power-actuated trunk, and he customized the dash with TP1-Tech instruments gauges. He choose a Budnik Banjo Billet steering wheel that was wrapped in the same material as the seats. The many months agonizing over the correct paint choice ended when Lyons and his wife were having a glass of Merlot wine. While lifting the glasses to toast, the sun shone through the glass and they both were hooked. Previously, they had explored two-tone and three-tone paints, and tans with a dark roof, but after conferring with their painter Johnny Guenther, he assured them the colour they wanted was Candy Brandy Wine. Hence the car came to be called “Merlot”. Guenther had recently painted a car this colour and it was available from House of Kolor over either a black, gold, silver or white base. Again, the peanut gallery piped up with warnings that dark burgundies
had been done to death. Many hours pouring over websites full of street rods assured Jim his choice was solid and the car would look stunning with the black base. The interior was left to the capable hands of Ron Fast, but not before more meddling from the “Gang”. Lyons wanted a burgundy interior and the naysayers cried foul and suggested every colour under the sun before a brown shade was chosen, but Lyons’ wife Elinore held her ground and the burgundy vinyl seems to please everyone now and even fools many into thinking it is leather. A fine Dark German Weave carpet accents the black Hartz cloth roof another choice hard fought for, but finalized after seeing a Willy’s online that was a similar colour with a black roof. The roof latches are available from Wescott, but Lyons’ brother-inlaw Doug Esau machined a perfect set of latches out of billet aluminum. The car was finished in 2009, and has been driven to the L.A. Roadster Show and the interior of B.C. many times and has won several awards, but Lyons pondered the drivability of the high-performance 302. After driving many of his customers’ cars after wiring them, he decided to go the a late-model 5.3 Litre LS engine.
