City eyes special zone for medical grow-ops

Proposed changes would mean that medical grow-ops could only operate legally within the M6 zone — to the exclusion of all other zones in Chilliwack. The idea by city officials was to be “proactive,” said Coun. Chuck Stam, in the face of changes coming to the medical pot rules. “It will give some certainty for those interested in getting involved, as well as for those already on edge about the idea,” he said. The zoning changes in Chilliwack would also mean that medical grow-ops could not be located on agricultural lands. “That would be out of the question if the amendment passes, and council endorses it,” said Stam. Zoning changes are going to public hearing on Aug. 20 in Chilliwack. Asked what other municipalities are doing to prepare for the shift in the rules, he said: “It’s all over the map. Some are ignoring it because they don’t think it will be a factor for them.” But Chilliwack has already had ample experience, and a range of public-safety concerns with medicinal grows, he said. “Every municipality has their own reasoning and experiences around this,” he said. Some have little to no experience with medical pot operations, whereas Chilliwack has busted several. Measles scare prompts vaccination warning Fraser Health’s chief medical health officer is warning about the rise in measles cases in the eastern Fraser Valley. Dr. Paul Van Buynder said the most recent case involves up to 60 women and newborns in a postnatal unit at Abbotsford Regional Hospital being exposed to the virus by a visitor who was in the early infectious stage at the time. Public health staff are contacting the affected families directly to offer immunoglobulin to reduce the chance of the infection devel-

oping. “The exposure of newborn children to this virus is a very concerning situation. They are too young to respond to the vaccine and some will not have received protection in utero from their mothers,” Buynder said. He said this comes after a recent death of a child from pertussis, another vaccine-preventable disease. “It is a timely reminder that not vaccinating children can have consequences for other vulnerable

infants.” Buynder said he encourages everyone who has not yet been vaccinated against measles to contact their doctor or health provider to receive the free vaccine. Communities that could be impacted include Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack, Agassiz, Harrison Hot Springs and Hope. Buynder said relatively low immunization rates in some parts of Fraser East have led to several clusters of the virus in previous years; the most recent being in April 2010

shortly after the Olympic Games. In June of this year, health officials issued a similar warning for Metro Vancouver. He said the most effective protection against the virus is two doses of the vaccine, which is free to all those born after 1957. If residents suspect they have been exposed or have developed symptoms, they should see their doctor and notify the office before arriving in order to prevent the spread of the disease to others at the clinic, he added.

Study takes broad view of run-of-river power Alina Konevski The Progress A local First Nations tribe has adopted the task of evaluating potential run-of-river hydro projects in the Chilliwack River Valley. The Ts’elxweyeqw Tribe, whose traditional territory spans the entire valley from west of Cultus Lake to east of Chilliwack Lake, won a provincial grant of $30,000 to evaluate small-scale hydro projects by independent power producers (IPPs) in the valley. These run-of-river projects have been controversial because they divert some of a river’s flow to electricity-generating turbines, before returning the water downstream. The problem with the current government evaluation and approval process of run-of-river projects, says Ts’elxweyeqw Tribe chief operating officer Matt Wealick, is

that projects are evaluated independently of each other. “I’ve seen the process of how they determine and approve these things, and they don’t take into consideration how many other runof-river projects are in that area,” said Wealick. “Do we want 15-20 of these run-of-river power projects scattered across the valley? Does it make sense? How will it impact all the other different resources out there?” The tribe has four active runof-river proposals on its table, all on creeks off of Chilliwack River: Tamihi Creek, Frost Creek, Nesakwatch Creek, and Centre Creek. The Tamihi Creek project, proposed by WindRiver Power Corporation, has been heavily criticized. The Outdoor Recreation Council of BC (ORC) named Tamihi Creek one of the most

endangered rivers in Canada in April. Drawing water away from the creek through a hydro project risks weakening the world-class whitewater stretches that attract paddlers and international kayaking competitions. A local environmental advocacy organization, The WaterWealth Project, warns that “nearly every river and stream in the Fraser Valley is slated for a hydro diversion scheme with these private power projects,” commented campaign director Sheila Muxlow. But a big map of run-of-river applications makes the situation look worse than it is, according to Alec Drysdale, director of resource authorizations with the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. In fact, “significantly more” than half of run-ofriver applications that are submitted “will never see the light of day.”

Drysdale also maintains that the government does indeed take into account other IPP projects during an evaluation of a new proposal. The Ts’elxweyeqw Tribe, however, is concerned that the government is not considering the big picture of how many run-of-river projects should be in the valley. Its primary concern is safeguarding historical cultural practices. “We look at the Chilliwack River Valley as something that we’ll be stewards of for years to come, and we have been since time immemorial,” said Wealick. “We just want to make sure that the Chilliwack River Valley is managed, for all natural resources, in a stable manner. That we can continue using resources — for hopefully many years to come — with the same type of practices that are done today, and were done before.” One example of a cultural prac-

tice is collecting certain foods, such as berries or mushrooms. The tribe wants to ensure that members retain access to these, and will look at whether run-of-river projects will impact the practice. WaterWealth agrees that the current run-of-river proposal evaluation process is not good enough. “Another problem with the review process is that it fails to consider the cumulative effects. Whether blocking fish spawning routes, displacing precious forest cover with new access roads, or undermining local tourism opportunities, the development of these diversion projects can have many negative impacts. Lemonade stand melts hearts in Chilliwack Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Nine-year-old Kai Manning of Chilliwack doesn’t want other families to feel the terrible pain of losing someone they love to cancer. So he started a lemonade stand to raise funds for the BC Children’s Hospital on his front lawn on Henley Street. It was “car after car” stopping at his little stand for days after that. Kai’s mom, Amanda Manning, said she figured her son would make $20 or $30 tops when he first floated the idea. But then the story exploded on local Facebook pages and the money for the Children’s has been pouring, from hordes of people touched by the sweet story. “I was coming back from the airport Wednesday night when I started getting text messages from people who heard about it,” said Manning. When Kai’s dad, Bob Manning, lost his battle with cancer a few years ago, the family was devastated. “I don’t want other kids and families to feel the same way,” Kai said. He’s been enjoying all the excitement of the constant stream of donations. “A lot of people haven’t even been taking any juice. They just want to give money,” he said. Vikki Beyak called Kai’s efforts “awesome.” “You’re going to remember this day until you’re as old as I am,” she told him. Agassiz resident Mary Lock drove all the way to Chilliwack to make a donation to the cause. “My husband passed away from cancer when my kids were about

Homes sales for Chilliwack and surrounding areas declined this July, a traditionally strong real estate month. A total of 205 units sold last month, down from 223 in July 2012 and from 215 this past June. Meanwhile, homes sales in the Fraser Valley real estate market, which includes properties from Abbotsford to Surrey, bucked negative trends and rose five per cent over July 2012. The Chilliwack and District Real Estate Board attributes the local decline to an aboveaverage home sales month last year. “The story in July was really a story about volatility last year,” said CADREB president Jesse Hildebrandt in a release. “Recall that there was a surge in demand last July. That’s the reason sales were down on a year-over-year basis this July. That was followed by a dramatic slowdown last August, so we’ll likely see a big year-overyear increase this August.” On the bright side, the average price of homes has risen five per cent since July 2012, to last month’s average of $328,273. The “special” M6 zone is geared specifically to those uses with “the potential to be environmentally incompatible” with residential areas or commercial operations. The related zoning amendments first received introduction and first reading on July 16. The rules used to be known as Medical Marihuana Access Regulations (MMAR), but will eventually fall under the Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulations (MMPR). Ottawa announced in January plans to phase out individual licences for medical marijuana users to grow in their own homes and instead have all medical pot grown and distributed by highly regulated, secure commercial operators.

Growing our future Chilliwack got a healthy reminder of the importance and relevance of agriculture over the weekend. For three days, the Chilliwack Fair showcased the industry that’s thriving in our midst. It was an opportunity to learn more about this diverse and still-evolving sector of our economy – and meet some of the people behind it. For many, agriculture remains on the periphery. They might marvel at the speed with which a stalk of corn grows, but overlook the broader impact farming has on our lives. There are 828 farms within the Chilliwack boundaries. They deliver more than $34 million in annual wages, and generate nearly $1.6 billion in additional economic activity. Within that sphere there is a range of operations – from some of the largest in dairy operations in the country, to smaller farms delivering to niche markets here and elsewhere. Diary remains one of the most dominant sectors. At the fair this weekend, residents had an opportunity to get up close and personal. Not only were there milking demonstrations, but also opportunities to witness the live birth of a calf. But while dairy might be the most prevalent, it shares an increasingly diversified agricultural landscape. And it’s a landscape that is changing. Where once corn, cows and chicken were king, we are seeing increased berry production, more green houses and more farm-gate sales. Exotic animals and the dangers of living on the wild side No one could have imagined the horror that unfolded last week when an African rock python strangled two young boys as they slept in the living room of a friend’s apartment in Cambellton, New Brunswick. The tragedy is beyond anyone’s worst nightmare. Four-year-old Noah Barthe and his six-year-old brother Connor were enjoying a sleepover at their friend’s home, son of the owner of Reptile Ocean pet store where the snake was housed. During the night, the 4.3metre long, 45-kilogram snake escaped from its enclosure, slithered into the ventilation system then moved through the apartment above the pet store. The snake fell through the ceiling to the living room below where it killed the boys. The extremely rare incident baffled even snake experts.

While these snakes (the largest in Africa), have unpredictable temperaments, sharp teeth for gripping prey, and a body that is an immense muscle for coiling and constricting, reports of humans killed by pythons are rare. A 13-year-old boy was killed in 1979 by a snake of similar length to the one in New Margaret Brunswick and, in EVANS 1999, a three-yearold boy in Illinois was suffocated by an escaped 2.3-metre python. Prime Minister Harper has promised to look into the incident and review Ottawa’s role in the regulation of exotic animals in Canada. Apparently, Environment Canada actually handed off this snake to Reptile Ocean in 2002

even though it was a banned species in New Brunswick. The snake had been found abandoned on the doorstep of the SPCA’s office in Moncton. Back then, the facility ran as a zoo but it was never an accredited zoo with the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The confusion over the status of the facility and the transfer of a banned species by federal officials highlights glaring inadequacies in the management of these animals and facilities operating under the radar of provincial laws. In fact, some 27 banned animals, including some endangered ones, were removed from Reptile Ocean by officials from the provincial Department of Natural Resources as well as representatives from Magnetic Hill Zoo in Moncton and Indian River Reptile Zoo. Snakes are talented Houdinis.

If there’s the slightest way out of their containment they will find it. It’s a fact of life all diligent herpetologists prepare for when they have potentially dangerous animals in their care. Laws in British Columbia to protect people from dangerous and exotic animals are among the best in Canada. After the tragic death of Tanya DumstreySoos who was killed by a tiger in Bridge Lake near 100 Mile House in 2007, the provincial government enacted changes to the B.C. Wildlife Act to ban a long list of exotic species. “It took a year to draft the new regulations from 2009 to 2010,” said former Minister of Environment Barr y Penner. “(Now), B.C. has the best regulations for dealing with dangerous and exotic species. If there is anything we can do to find a positive response (to the tragedy

Nothing radical about the NDP In the letter of Aug. 8, E.W. Bopp called the NDP’s ideology a far-left one (Progress, Aug. 8). I found this a little puzzling because the party’s aims are no more draconian than to support a halfway decent life for all its citizens. This means, for example, opposing an ever-widening gap between the very wealthy and mainstreet Canada, supporting a reasonable health and education system, assuring adequate wages which, by the way, also makes sense economically. Did Samuel Johnson not say “A decent provision for the poor is the true test

of civilization.” No, this is not the 18th century, but the principle of this statement still holds true, or should hold true, today. These issues concern not only Canada’s NDP but also governments where coalitions are often a fact (Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Germany, France, New Zealand). Some of the South American countries have espoused the vision of the Chilean president Dr. Salvador Allende who found his death during the coup d’état in 1973, manoeuvred by the CIA and Chile’s military under

the dreadful Augusto Pinochet. At times people will say “we are not governed by those we elect but by powerful corporations.” It’s their money and interests that largely determine an election’s outcome. A good dollop of ruthlessness, misinformation and half-truths do the rest. E.W. Bopp’s quote of Shakespeare’s: “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet” made me smile. Humans are most dangerous invasive species Having read Phil Mante’s take on the demise of the young cougar on Teapot Hill, I can’t help but agree with his opinion. (With animals, it’s kill or be killed, Progress, Aug. 8). What does disturb and dismay me, however, is his use of the word ‘expendable.’ So all animals are expendable, especially if they pose a threat to humans? The logic is undeniable but given that if an ani-

mal is not dangerous, ‘expendable’ still applies because we humans regard animals as either food for their flesh, or producers of food, shelter or clothing by their very captive presence. ‘Invasive species’ is a term often used when we worry about those plants or animals introduced by design or accident, nine times out of 10 by humans where native species are usurped or killed

off by them. I maintain that the greatest most widely consuming and most dangerous invasive species is we humans. The list of devastations caused to this world by our arrogance is mightily long and growing, and our nature and mindset will bring about our own demise in time despite the efforts of conservationists. We are, in short, as a species, nature’s biggest mistake.

Unfortunate fall by senior leads to lesson in adequate hydration I would like to thank the good Samaritan who called the ambulance when I fell on Inkman Road (in Agassiz) on Friday, July 26. I was taken by ambulance to Hope hospital, where the doctor and nurses did tests to determine why I fell. I fell because I was dehydrated. Now, I take a bottle of water when I walk to town. Thanks again to the person who called the ambulance and the ambulance drivers and the doctor and nurses at the Hope hospital. I even got lunch at the Hope hospital. There is a lesson here. Elderly people should always have water when they walk in hot weather. I was trying to be 27 instead of 67. Thank goodness I live in a small town, where people still care about each other. Act of kindness won’t be forgotten In a society that people are so busy in their lives and rush around and avoid any unnecessary contact with strangers, I would like to thank someone for their act of kindness. At the shell station in Chilliwack I was ready to put windshield fluid in my car. I was dressed for work and was going there once I left the station. A gentleman offered to put the fluid in my car so I would not get dirty. It was thoughtful and greatly appreciated. This gentleman grows food for the homeless on God’s Little Acre in Surrey. Emergency personnel tended to a woman who was hit while driving a motorized scooter on Airport Road in Chilliwack on Wednesday afternoon. The collision happened shortly after 5 p.m. just west of Young Road. She was exiting the parking lot of HomeLife Glenayre Realty and turning left onto Airport Road when she was struck by a car travelling eastbound. An 89-year-old woman was taken to hospital Friday morning after an accident in the Salish Plaza s Foods parking lot. The woman was pushing her shopping cart through a crosswalk at 9:35 a.m. A vehicle trying to leave the parking lot hit her cart at a very low speed. The cart hit the woman, causing her to fall to the pavement and hit her head. She had some bruises, but was otherwise OK. The driver of the vehicle was fined for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

One of the most unique features of the docked hospital are the â€œextra bodies,â€? says Kerkhoff. Many patients arrive with caregivers or companions, who end up sleeping underneath the patientâ€™s bed because there isnâ€™t space enough for large waiting rooms. There are also many translators to help navigate between the countryâ€™s various dialects. In her duties, Kerkhoff often needs to find several people to interpret one message. â€œIf Iâ€™m trying to give directions to a patient about taking medication when they go home, I might have to translate English to French to another local language, and then find somebody else to translate that to another local language,â€? she said. And medical supplies are precious. â€œOver here (in Canada), we have everything at our fingertips. But there, supplies are like gold.

The Progress In just a few days, Chilliwack nurse Nelleke Kerkhoff will take up residence on a living, breathing hospital ship docked off the African west coast. Kerkhoff is doing her third tour aboard Africa Mercy, this time heading to the Republic of the Congo for 11 weeks. She will be one of 450 crew members to operate the full-fledged emergency hospital from inside a large ocean vessel operated by the charity Mercy Ships, an organization that has been stationing a hospital ship for short stretches at various ports in the developing world since 1978. â€œI really enjoyed it the previous times I went. Itâ€™s just a way to give back. We really have so much here,â€? said Kerkhoff. â€œIt pushes me out of my comfort zone.â€? Based on past experiences, much of Kerkhoffâ€™s work as an

intensive care unit nurse in the Congo will be assisting in complex life-saving facial surgeries. In countries with very little access to basic care, common tumours end up developing to tremendous sizes, taking over a personâ€™s face and obstructing the airway. Humanitarian operations such as Mercy Ships provide one of the few opportunities that residents have for corrective surgeries. Working aboard the ship is a very different environment for

Kerkhoff, who has a permanent position as an ICU nurse at Abbotsford hospital. The ship is like a â€œsmall city unto itself,â€? she says. There are 78 hospital beds alongside the various operating theatres and medical rooms. But there is also accommodation for crew, a cafeteria, a bank, a post office, and even a Starbucks. The busy environment makes for little privacy for those like Kerkhoff living and working aboard for months on end.

Theyâ€™ve raised $202,470 for the charity since 2008 with the lunch packed in a jaunty pirate ship, helping more than 100 kids and young adults. â€œThe entire team at White Spot is excited to be partnering with Zajac Ranch for the sixth year in a row, and proud to make a difference in the lives of kids facing challenges,â€? said White Spot president Warren Erhart. At the Chilliwack White Spot, 373 Pirate Paks were sold on Pirate Pak Day alone last year, with a total of 14,241 purchased throughout the year in 2012.

Although your Realtor is responsible for marketing your property, it requires a joint effort to get your home sold. First of all, it is very important that you feel absolutely confident that you can communicate with each other. It is important to let your Realtor know that you trust them to get the job done. Then support that trust by putting a realistic price tag on the property and keeping it in prime showing condition. Work out showing instructions that will make it easy for Realtors to preview or show your home, and discuss any feedback from buyers who have seen your home to determine how you can improve its appeal. When your home is listed for sale, it may be difficult for you to step aside and let your Realtor take over. As prospective buyers arrive, you want to stand by to point out the closet extenders, the hidden spice cabinet behind the kitchen door, and the energy-saving storm windows. However, if you really want to help, you will leave the house when it is being shown! Realtors know that the sales process does not really begin until buyers being to voice their objection about a property. Sometimes these concerns are serious enough to remove your house from consideration. If the owners follow the Realtor through the house, listening to every word – and elaborating on everything, it will be difficult for the buyers to envision the house as their own. Buyers go through a process which involves raising objections that the Realtor can help them work through. If the owners are present, the buyers may feel inhibited because they don’t want to offend them. The owner may also appear overly anxious to sell and send signals that could result in a lower offer than they might have made otherwise. Buyers usually base their decision to buy on an attraction that often has more to do with emotion than pure logic, and a lot goes

on between buyer and Realtor during a showing. The buyer needs to evaluate the home’s pluses and minuses, and the Realtor needs the opportunity to work with the buyer’s objections. This process cannot take place comfortably if the seller is on the scene. The seller’s most important contribution is to keep their home in prime showing condition so that the Realtor can maximize every showing opportunity. In an ideal world, properties on the market should look spotless, but even the most impeccable housekeepers find it difficult to keep the house in prime showing condition all the time. Keeping the beds perpetually made, dishes washed, bathrooms spotless and the closets neat is a lot of work. Is it worth it? It is if you want to get your house sold in a reasonable amount of time for top dollar. Buyers often see normal clutter, and what registers is “this place hasn’t been maintained.” They see bathtub rings and think “plumber’s bills”. They see grease on the stove and imagine having to replace all of the appliances. It isn’t often logical, but people can be less than logical when buying a house. When making their final selection, they may be going on emotion and adrenaline rather than imagination. You can help your Realtor by minimizing the amount of imagination they will need to fall in love with your home. Go through your home with an eye for potential hazards. Look for loose banisters, uneven steps, precariously placed plants, wet spots on bath or kitchen floors, toys that someone might fall over and anything that you have to step over or duck under. Make sure that rugs will not slip, especially those at the bottom of stairs. There aren’t many things that will more quickly dampen a buyer’s enthusiasm for a house than a bump on the head or an unexpected trip on uneven steps.

You really realize it when you come back.” Kerkhoff’s previous trips with Mercy Ships took her to Liberia in 2008 and Togo in 2010. She worked alongside nurses from around the globe, all with different trainings and backgrounds, and one task was just figuring out how to work together. Kerkhoff encourages others to look into doing a similar trip, even if they don’t have medical training. Mercy Ships needs people to run the kitchen, dining room, housekeeping, library, deck, and do construction. “For me it was a good step because I could have the comfort of knowing I was in a safe environment with food that I knew was going to

be safe, to have a clean bed to sleep in, and still be able to bring that care to a Third World country,” said Kerkhoff. Last year, Chilliwack mom Kathryn Stock joined the staff of Africa Mercy for two years as an administrator in the ophthalmology department. Volunteer crew members like Kerkhoff have to pay their own way for the trip. About 90 of Kerkhoff’s friends and family came out for a bike-a-thon last week along Vedder River, raising over $6,000 for her trip. Welsh, The Progress Note to BC Football Conference schedule makers — if you could just schedule the Valley Huskers versus the Kamloops Broncos 10 times next year, that’d be good. Thanks. The Huskers and Broncos squared off Saturday night at Hilltop Stadium in Kamloops. Seven days earlier, the teams had played to a 29-29 tie in Chilliwack in a game that was hugely entertaining. The rematch was just as good, with the Huskers prevailing 33-30. Chilliwack led 16-8 at halftime and 29-16 through three quarters, then hung on at the end. A Dan Erickson field goal was the difference as the Huskers improved to 1-1-1. Based purely on the numbers, Kamloops

should have run away with this one. The Broncos rolled up 435 yards of net offence. Kamloops QB Connor Whitelaw completed 16 of 39 passes for 262 yards, with TD tosses to Derek Yachison, Sean Poeppel and Devin Csincsca. Bronco running backs rumbled for 178 yards on 32 carries (5.56 average), with Sheldon Brown finding the endzone on one of his runs. On the flipside, the Huskers generated just 222 yards. Cody Parray completed 13 passes for 167 yards. Dylan Boykowich caught five for 100 yards and two touchdowns, topping the century mark for the second time in three outings this year. The Husker running game fizzled, averaging a tepid 2.33 yards per carry on 27

rushes for 63 yards. Ty Derayos led the ground game with 14 carries for 50 yards and a major. Erickson was one of the difference makers. The reigning BCFC special teams player of the week nailed three of his four field goal attempts, including a 45 yarder. It was Calgary’s Samuel-Matuet Buomkuoth who turned in the play of the game, returning a fumble 30 yards for a touchdown. “Our defence stopped them when we needed to, our offence was able to convert in the red zone and our special teams continued the great effort that they had last week,” said Husker head coach Tyson St. James said afterwards. “But we had a lot of penalties that we need to clean up, and our defense will be working on protecting the lead.”

Briggs the best at Fraser Valley tourney Cole Briggs and Connor McLellan staged an epic battle for supremacy at the Fraser Valley Junior Golf Tournament, held last week at four local courses. On day one, last Tuesday at the Cultus Lake Golf Club, Briggs shot a 59 to finish one shot behind 17-year-old McLellan. Lion stars visit Chilliwack that two Canadian running backs have topped that mark in the same season. Reid has delivered key blocks on many Harris runs. A lock for the Lions Ring of Honour once he retires, the Simon Fraser University grad is in his 13th season in the orange and black. Reid has been the unquestioned starter at center for the last nine seasons, helping the team win three Grey Cups. He has spent the early part of this season, likely his last, on the injured list. Bighill spent some time on the injured list as well, returning to action two weeks ago. The Central Washington University grad is in his third season with the Leos, entrenching himself as a starting linebacker. Bighill was a tackling machine last year, racking up 104 stops and nine sacks. In four

Football Grizzlies gear up for fall camp The GW Graham Grizzlies kick off their fall training camp Aug. 19, with three teams hitting the field. The school had teams at the Grade 8 and junior varsity (Grades 9-10) levels last year. This year, they add one at the varsity level.

BC Football Conference grad Andrew Harris leads a trio of BC Lions stars to Chilliwack Aug. 24. Harris, the top allpurpose running back in the Canadian Football League, will be joined by center Angus Reid and linebacker Adam Bighill. They will be at Sports & Stuff in the Chilliwack Mall from 2 to 4 p.m., signing autographs and chatting with fans. Harris, a former Vancouver Island Raider, is in his fourth year with the Lions. Chilliwackâ€™s Aaron Pauls tied for 41st overall at the Canadian Menâ€™s Amateur Golf Championship, held Aug. 6-9 at two Victoria-area courses. Pauls fired a nine-over-par 291 over four rounds. The first round was his best, with the UFV golf star shooting a four-under-par 68 that included three birdies. Pauls followed that with his worst round, a six-over-par 78. He fired 73 in round three and 72 in round four. Seventy one golfers went the distance, with another 177 missing the second-round cut.

Tammy was a loving wife and mother to her husband Terry, daughter Heather & son Lyle and was predeceased by her son Brandon (who passed away on September 7, 1993). She managed an apartment building for the past 20 yrs. She loved keeping up on the gardens and all her tenants loved her. She had a very creative personality. Her jewelry making and rock collecting was a beautiful example of her creativity. She loved camping and fishing and ‘spur of the moment outings’. Her magnetic personality drew people in with her bubby and very talkative, easy spirit. She could just strike up a conversation with anyone out of the blue and they would instantly feel at ease. Tammy had a “Big Heart” and would always put other’s cares and feelings before her own. If someone was in need, she would always find a way to help them out and make them smile. Tammy will be sorely missed and loved for an eternity. Yvonne passed away peacefully in Abbotsford at the age of 69. Yvonne is survived by her loving husband Charles Cecil Williams, 3 children, 3 stepchildren and grandchildren. Yvonne touched the hearts and lives of many people throughout her life and will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved her. No service will be held at her request.

Mom passed away peacefully with her 3 children by her side at the Chilliwack General hospital. She had complications from COPD which she tried to fight but lost. Special thanks to all the wonderful nurses in the ICU for their compassion and love they shared with us while we were there for our Mom. Those who knew Mom never saw her without her knitting needles or crochet hooks. She was always making something and ready to show you what she had just finished or was wanting to start next. She was a wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and great grandmother. Violet is survived by son, Allan (Susan); children: David (Vickie), Robbie (Kristi) and Shawna (Curtis); daughter Cindy Brouwer (Tom); children: Theresa; son, Patrick; children: Chelsy and Carson; great grandchildren: Cale, Campbell, Casey, Christian, Kaleb, Lex and Alexander; sister, Willa (Jonathan) and brother, Jim (Ann); numerous nieces and nephews, special friends: Ramona and Sue.
