A “john sting” last week in Abbotsford resulted in the arrests of nine men ages 22 to 80. Const. Ian MacDonald said the operation was conducted Thursday and Friday in the downtown core and along the Clearbrook Road corridor to target people soliciting sex-trade workers. MacDonald said all the arrested men were firsttime offenders and have the option of attending “john school” rather than proceeding with criminal charges through the court system. John school is designed to educate participants about the negative consequences of prostitution and the victimization of women. MacDonald said the Abbotsford Police Department typically conducts john stings about twice a year, usually precipitated by concerns from sex-trade workers. For example, he said the latest sting resulted after police received complaints about “bad dates” – men who either become violent or refuse to pay. Previous stings resulted in men being arrested who were carrying weapons that included knives and zap straps, MacDonald said. Investigators look at suspicious fire Blaze in Crestview Avenue home began in bedroom A house fire that took place in Abbotsford on Monday night is being investigated as suspicious. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service was called to the home at 3546 Crestview Ave. at about 9:30 p.m. Crews arrived to find heavy black smoke coming from the home, and they discovered that a blaze had started in a bedroom. A former president of the Abbotsford CUPE (Canadian Union of Public Employees) local received an 18-month conditional sentence on Monday for defrauding the union of more than $21,000. Ronald Christopher Hunter, 42, previously pleaded guilty to fraud over $5,000 for incidents that occurred from 2008 to 2010. Hunter was acclaimed as president of CUPE local 774 in April 2008 while working as an equipment operator and water technician. Crown counsel Louisa Winn told the court that over an 18-month period starting in July 2008, there were 13 incidents in which Hunter was paid for expenses he claimed using fake invoices. The treasurer at the time was inexperienced, and Hunter took advantage of that, Winn said. “Because he was the president, she relied on his authority.” In one instance, Hunter submitted an invoice for just over $2,000 to cover airfare for two to attend a national CUPE conference in Newfoundland. In another, he submitted an invoice for $750 to cover the costs of a course on communications skills. Hunter’s deceit was discovered after he
wrote and cleared a $6,100 cheque for a CUPE fishing tournament, which he told the treasurer would be reimbursed to the local by the provincial CUPE branch. When she checked the details with the national office, she discovered that no such arrangement had been made. An internal investigation was conducted, and checks with vendors listed on other

invoices indicated that Hunter had been falsifying documents. The matter was reported to the Abbotsford Police Department, and Hunter was charged in November 2010. Defence lawyer Lorne Wise said Hunter perpetrated the fraud in order to provide counselling for his wife, who was experiencing mental health issues, and for CUPE members who were not being covered through their benefits. Wise said Hunter was also suffering from anxiety and depression at the time. In sentencing Hunter, Judge Gregory

Rideout said Hunter’s crimes were a betrayal of the “blue collar” and “hard-working” members of the union. The crimes not only “financially devastated” the local, but damaged its credibility and members’ morale, he said. Hunter addressed the court, saying he was sorry for his actions, particularly in deceiving the treasurer at the time. “(There is) no excuse for the bad decisions I’ve made, the betrayal,” he said. A conditional sentence means Hunter will serve his time in the community and will be allowed to leave his home only to attend work. His sentence will be followed by one year of probation. Hunter has also been ordered to repay the $21,146 that he fraudulently obtained. Rideout noted the irony in Hunter now being employed at another union job. Kalinda Naismith, current treasurer of CUPE local 774, said she believes the membership will be satisfied with the sentence handed down. Naismith refuted Hunter’s defence that he used the fraudulently obtained funds to help members pay for counselling expenses. “ … our employer offers a great Employee and Family Assistance Program. In my 17 years, I’ve never heard of anyone being denied free counselling...”

The latest national stats show that crime in the AbbotsfordMission census metropolitan area (CMA) dropped seven per cent from 2011 to 2012. The area recorded the 11th highest crime rate among the 33 CMAs included by Statistics Canada for 2012 and was the 10th highest in its crime severity index. The crime stats were released last Thursday by the national agency. Abbotsford-Mission tallied 6,148 Criminal Code offences per 100,000 population in 2012, compared to the national average of 5,588. The area also recorded a crime severity index of 83.4, a drop of six per cent compared to its 2011 figure of 87.9. The index is a formula based on the number of crimes in a CMA and the severity of each offence. The national average is 75. Abbotsford Police spokesman Const. Ian MacDonald said although the area’s crime rate and crime severity index are
higher than the national average, the rate is lower for the number of violent crimes. “For a community formerly known as the Murder Capital of Canada, it’s those violent stats that have become important, but I’d say we’re working hard to bring all our numbers down.” Abbotsford topped national stats for its six murders in 2008 and 11 in 2009 – many gang-related – but has since drastically reduced those numbers. There were three murders in 2012, and two so far this year. MacDonald said the APD views the recent crime stats as “all right.” “I don’t know if you’re ever pleased if you’re trying to be the safest city in B.C. The three CMAs recording the highest crime rates were Kelowna (8,875), Regina (8,755) and Saskatoon (8,512), while the lowest was Toronto (3,131). Toronto also had the lowest crime severity index at 52.1, while the three highest were Regina (116), Saskatoon (107.1) and Kelowna (104.1).

charged with eight counts after two women selling massage services on craigslist reported that he had sexually assaulted them in his apartment, in separate incidents. One set of charges proceeded through the court system, and Paul Williams Holmes received a 19-month prison sentence in January of this year for unlawful confinement and uttering threats.

City website security breach Security consultant says data not accessed

The City of Abbotsford website may have been breached, according to a notice issued by the city. On July 16, the city found that software used to run web services may have been accessed without authoritzation. The city then shut down all external access to online services in order to protect data. The city hired an independent security consultant who worked with business technology staff to assess the breach. City staff and the consultant confirmed that though there was unauthoritzed access to the site, there is no evidence that any data was accessed. “This is purely a precautionary measure to tell people that this happened... We don’t believe any information was actually accessed,� said city clerk Bill Flitton. The data that was potentionally at risk includes information provided by residents who participate
in the property tax pre-payment plan and pre-paying taxes through automatic withdrawal. That information would be the kind commonly found on personal cheques, such as name, address and the bank account number. For customers who use MyCity

Also at risk was property tax and utility billing data, property ownership, homeowner grants, dog licence information and bylaw information and complaints. The city stated the data would not contain credit or debit card information, social insurance numbers or driver’s licence data.
Valley Road Closed on August 20, 2013 The Abbotsford Mission Recycling Depot and the Matsqui Transfer Station will be closed on August 20, 2013. Flitton said that residents who use MyCity Online services may wish to change their passwords and security questions. The city doesn’t know who gained access to the site. Flitton said the unauthorized access may have been prompted by companies seeking contact information in order to send “phishing emails.� “We believe that’s what was happening here based on the type of information they were trying to access.� The issue has been addressed and as of Tuesday online services were restored. Flitton said though the breach will likely not impact people, the city issued the notice for transparency. The city has sent emails and letters to the public informing them of the breach. Bevan Avenue Wells Operation Notice The City of Abbotsford received approval to increase the capacity of four existing water wells until 2015. This will help to meet peak demand for water during summer months. The wells are located in the southwest corner of Mill Lake Park. The approved pumping capacity is 290 L/s. A total of 2,505 million litres of water may be drawn from these wells annually, between May and September. For the 2013 season, the Bevan Avenue wells are expected to begin operating from early June onward, as needed.

Other Hand Last Thursday afternoon I took a leisurely drive across Sumas Prairie. At about 18 miles an hour, with no top and no windshield, travel by tractor is quite illuminating as to the crops grown on our farmland. Remnant gladiolus stand colourful among the wheat stalks as a field was rotated, the vast swards of lawn turf intense emerald green and the odours, both pleasant and pungent, of mown hay and other aspects of farming’s “dairy air.” The heat of the summer sun tempered by the breeze of motion, it was an entirely pleasant way to travel, the noise of the diesel and the hum of the large and lugged four-wheel-drive tires diminished by earmuffs. The trip took an hour, and after dropping off the rig at my eldest son’s property, he drove me home. An hour or so later, and knowing I’d be cooking my own dinner
that evening, I drove down to the local shopping centre for some fixins. Standing at the self-checkout I reached for the shoppers’ loyalty card in my wallet and found an empty back pocket. I turned, shocked and wide-eyed, towards the young gal who is there to assist those us who occasionally fumble the self-serve aspect of payment. From my look she knew that something was wrong. “I lost my wallet,” was my stunned response as I dug into my other pocket for some cash, paid and made a hasty retreat home, imagining all the way that it must have fallen out of my pocket and onto the farm roads of Sumas Prairie during the tractor delivery. However, by this time it was some three hours later than my original trip, so it was with visions of looming financial catastrophe that I set out, not so leisurely this time, to retrace my tracks.
It wasn’t such a pleasant drive this time, and the outcome was not successful. As I drove home, all I could think of was that a couple of credit cars, ATM cards, driver’s licence, firearms licence, boat operator’s permit, Care Card and God knows what else I couldn’t recall was in the wallet, and were now likely in the hands of some felon currently engaging in a spending spree. What also crossed my mind was that I didn’t have a clue what my credit card numbers were, or who to call to cancel them. And without debit cards and credit card, and my last $20 spent earlier at the grocery store, what was I going to do for money in the meantime? Then came the realization that to replace all the licences and other vital forms of identification was also going to take time and cost money, possibly a considerable sum. It’s surprising the disaster scenarios one can conjure in a few minutes driving

across a darkening landscape, the good humour of a few hours before dashed as easily as a wallet slipping out of your pocket. By this time also, the person who can usually find anything (but her own car keys) had arrived home and I called her, requesting that she check an old pair of jeans upstairs – just in case. Nope, not there came the reply and I hung up, even more disconsolate and envisioning a night of explanations to various credit card cancellation agencies. Then, moments later, another phone call . . . “I found it, teetering on a partly opened drawer of the bedroom bureau.” I had, it appears, knocked it out of my pocket when getting dressed that morning, and for some inexplicable reason had gone the whole day without that familiar lump in my back pocket. Relief flooded in, along with the realization that it is imperative to record and photocopy both sides of every card and document in my wallet, and store that information in a safe place, just in case the next loss is a real one.

Missing the point Abbotsford airport designated for aerobatics of true community I was saddened by the article in the paper regarding the details of who and what (city) departments were involved in the chicken manure dumping decision. One would have hoped that only one or two misguided souls were responsible, but there were too many without regard or respect for the dignity of vulnerable people. How does a city with so many churches, temples and other faith communities so miss the point of true community and loving one’s neighbour as oneself? Why is it so quiet? I would like to ask the readers to seriously ponder this: What, and how many, bad things would have to happen in my own life for me to end up homeless? Think about that! And if that did happen to me, how would I escape the pain? If pondering that for a few moments, encourages any compassion in you, then you can make a difference. Talk with those who are have the same compassion and are actively engaged with the poor and homeless. A good place to start? The 5 and 2 Ministry.... look them up on Facebook.
Clearly, reader Dennis Cook is unaware that, for aviation safety reasons, aerobatics may only be practiced in a designated practice area, preferably an aerobatic box within a
control zone. Abbotsford airport has had such designated airspace for many years, logically enough, considering the popularity and world-wide recogni-
tion of the Abbotsford International Airshow. It’s just a guess, but I’ll bet the airport
and its related activities were there before Mr. Cook chose to live nearby. If so, I suggest

Random act of kindness
On Sunday, July 21, at approximately 2:30 p.m., two special young adults set up a free lemonade and cookie stand at the Abbotsford Mill Lake water park. It was very hot out and my family really appreciated the ice cold drink and treat. I asked if I could make a donation to the girls, if they were doing it for a cause and they just said they were doing it to recognize people’s awesomeness! We’re next after mammals and birds I cannot believe someone actually wrote in saying to cull a wild bird. We have a hard enough time keeping those few left alive. To both letter-writers – the one about the
Crow solution: Shotgun It’s great to see that there are others in Abbotsford and area that area concerned about the over-abundance of crows and geese that frequent our parks and farm lands. I will not take visitors or grandchildren to our foul-smelling parks with poop-covered walks and grass play areas. It is high time the City of Abbotsford got a handle on culling the geese population in and around all our standing water parks and trails. They should take a close look at Okanagangooseplan. com. I spent a week in Osoyoos in June and didn’t see any geese in the lake or park areas. As to the flying rats/ crows, the best way to deal with them is by Mr. Browning 12 gauge. My apologies to the bleeding hearts, but as C. Perry writes in his letter, they spread disease and garbage. There was a time, not so long ago, that fish and game clubs throughout the Lower Mainland conducted fall crow shoots approved by their respective municipalities. Let’s get together and make a concerted effort to reduce the numbers of both species. Lionel Hogan, Abbotsford

We’ve caused the atmosphere to have holes so the sun is burning the Earth. The air we breathe is so bad the plants and trees die from suffocation. The birds are slowly disappearing, leaving us to defend ourselves against bugs. We can almost walk on some parts of the ocean, due to us putting tons of trash and
toxic waste into it. Mammals are starving because we have to over-eat and be fat on seafood. The animals are being killed off because we have broken the chain of life. Each animal has a role. Now we build houses right in their backyards and complain. How silly is this? You have a house built by a farm built in 1948 and then they complain of smells and sounds. Take away the farms and your children can eat grass. The geese used to be able to fly free, now
they can’t. You want them culled more. Well, too bad! Step around the poo. It’s part of life. I miss the sounds and seeing geese, plus many other animals. The crows are sick because there is no natural food or enough water. That goes for all the animals. Our wonderful Canadian goose will be gone soon enough. But take heed. B.C.’s best wildlife photos wanted Whether you’re spending your summer vacation relaxing in your backyard or adventuring into the B.C. wilderness, the BC SPCA wants to show off your best B.C. wildlife pictures. Amateur photographers can enter the fifth annual WildlifeIn-Focus Photography Contest by submitting digital photos until Sept. 30. The contest is a fundraiser supporting the society’s Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre (Wild ARC) on southern Vancouver Island, where more than 2,500 orphaned and injured wild animals are cared for every year. “With the nation’s greatest diversity of wildlife in our own province, we are excited to help backyard and amateur photographers showcase these amazing animals,” says Sara Dubois, manager of wildlife services for the BC SPCA. Some of the photos entered in previous contests have been featured in the BC SPCA’s AnimalSense and Bark! magazines, local newspapers and even a book – City Critters: Wildlife in the Urban Jungle – authored by local journalist Nicholas Read. Prizes will be awarded for the top three photos in each of two categories: Wild Settings and Backyard Habitats. The contest is open to all adult (age 14 years and up) backyard and amateur photographers resid-

Imagine you’re hard at work when, out of nowhere, you’re tapped on the shoulder and told that it’s time for you to take a breathalyser. You recall that your union did not agree to this in your recent collective agreement, and you’re left wondering to yourself “Can they really make me do this?” The answer to that question is – as is often the case in the legal world – it depends! T h e Supreme Court of Canada recently considered the extent of an emDoug p l o y e r ’s r i g h t to unilaterally implement workplace policies in Communications, E n e rg y and Paperworkers Union of Canada, Local 30 v. Irving Pulp & Paper Ltd, 2013 SCC 34. In that case, the union challenged an employer’s ability to implement a mandatory drug testing policy. Under that policy, 10 per cent of employees in safety sensitive positions would be required to undergo unannounced breathalyser testing throughout the course of a year – a positive test resulted in disciplinary action. The court relied on the well-established principle that an employer may only impose a rule with disciplinary consequences when the need for the rule outweighs the harmful impact on
an employee’s privacy rights. This principle essentially amounts to a balancing act on the part of the courts. Applied to the Irving decision, the court ultimately held that the invasion of privacy was too great to allow the employer to compel its employees to undergo breathalyser testing. However, the court explicitly stated that under different circumstances, an employer may very well have the right to do just that. In particular, the court noted that when a workplace is d a n g e ro u s , an employer would have the right to implement a mandatory drug testing policy if there is reasonable cause to believe that a specific employee was impaired while on duty, or if the employee had a history of accidents or substance abuse. Unless a collective agreement specifically allows for a certain policy or rule, it isn’t always clear to what extent an employer can unilaterally impose them. The courts will assess these situations on a case by case basis. If you find yourself asking “Can they make me do this?” it will often be in your best interest to contact your local labour or employment lawyer.

An open letter to all Canadians Bell Canada is taking the unusual step of writing to all Canadians today. As the nation’s longest-serving telecommunications company, established shortly after Confederation in 1880, we would like to ensure Canadians clearly understand a critical situation impacting their world-leading wireless industry. Verizon Communications, a $120-billion US telecommunications giant with 100 million wireless customers, is considering entering the Canadian market. A company of this scale certainly doesn’t need handouts from Canadians or special regulatory advantages over Canadian companies. But that is exactly what they get in the new federal wireless regulations. Bell welcomes any competitor, but they should compete on a level playing field. Fair competition is something Canadians demand and something Bell expects too after 133 years of investment in delivering world-class communications services to Canadians.
Unintended advantages for American giants: How we got here The federal government has recently taken an activist role in regulating Canada’s wireless industry. That includes giving various benefits to small startup wireless competitors. With Ottawa’s help, the new companies have become part of the vigorously competitive Canadian wireless marketplace. But the government inadvertently left holes in the wireless rules that would give big US corporations the same extraordinary advantages as the small startups. And all Canadians are on the hook to pay. Verizon has said it’s looking at taking advantage of this unique opportunity. We do not believe a US company 4x the size of Canada’s entire wireless industry combined requires special help from Canada. It’s profoundly unfair to all Canadians, and Ottawa needs to close the loopholes.
3 loopholes in the rules Under federal regulations originally designed for startup competitors, Verizon would actually get these benefits… 1. Verizon would be able to buy twice as much of Canada’s airwaves as Canadian companies like Bell can in an upcoming auction of wireless spectrum – the airwaves that carry your calls and data. These airwaves are a public resource, and access to them is critical to providing you with world-leading wireless services. When Ottawa auctions off Canada’s airwaves for use by telecommunications companies, it gets significant revenues. These are public funds. It is inappropriate for our own government to essentially reserve a public resource for a company like Verizon to the detriment of Canadian companies. In doing so, the government will also reduce federal auction revenue significantly – by potentially hundreds of millions of dollars. A loophole that gives US companies access to twice as much of our airwaves and at a lower cost is an unfair advantage, paid for by Canadians. 2. They get to piggyback on the networks of Canadian carriers wherever they don’t want to invest and build their own. Under the rules, Verizon would have the right to offer wireless service using the advanced networks funded by Canadian companies and built by Canadian workers. Industry experts say a Verizon wouldn’t need to build its own network throughout Canada, invest in Canada’s rural communities, or support Canadian jobs like Canadian wireless companies do. Instead, they would concentrate on a few big urban centres, forcing Canadian carriers to do the same while potentially cutting jobs and slashing costs in order to compete. 3. Verizon can acquire smaller Canadian competitors – but Bell and other Canadian wireless companies can’t even try. American players like Verizon can buy up new Canadian wireless companies like Wind Mobile and Mobilicity at cut-rate prices – including their existing spectrum holdings previously subsidized by Canadian taxpayers. Yet Canadian carriers like Bell are restricted from competing to acquire these Canadian startups, even if the new companies want it to happen. That means Verizon gets them for below-market value. What did Ottawa get from the United States in return for this unprecedented access to Canada? Nothing. No reciprocity in the US for Canadian companies. In fact, can you even imagine Canadian wireless companies getting preferred access to New York, Los Angeles or Chicago?
3 straightforward ways to close the loopholes The Bell team is ready to compete with anyone for your business on a level playing field. But big US companies taking advantage of rules designed to help Canadian startups is just not on the level. To get wireless policy back on track, we propose that… 1. Canadian wireless carriers should be able to bid for the same amount of Canada’s airwaves as Americans can. 2. US operators entering Canada should roll out wireless service across the country, just as Canadian companies have. 3. If a small Canadian wireless company seeks a buyer, Canadian carriers should be allowed to bid, just as the Americans can. US giants don’t need special help from the Canadian government, and Canadians shouldn’t have to pay their way into the country. Instead, let’s give Canada’s own communications companies a fair chance to compete with them. Sincerely,

Hydrangeas steal the show Virtually every welltended garden is now going through its cycle of summer colour, but a certain flowering shrub is just around the corner, preparing to steal the show. Hydrangeas, next to roses, are perhaps the most common deciduous flowering shrub in West Coast gardens. The macrophylla or garden hydrangea was introduced to England in 1736, and since then a series of exciting new varieties have been developed for the home garden. When folks ask me to recommend a good vine for a shady north wall, my first choice is the climbing hydrangea, anomala petiolaris. This deciduous, fast-growing vine has four-inch-long, dark, heart-shaped glossy leaves. It has aerial rootlets that cling to virtually anything standing still, and the plant itself will stretch to 20 feet or more, if left untrimmed. Its foliage appears quite early in the spring and lasts well into the autumn. The real feature of this attractive vine, however, is its large, flat white flower clusters which grow to six inches across and resemble the lace-cap varieties. This hydrangea is hardy to -25° C. which is surprising because of its lush appearance. It’s a winner in any garden and will tolerate some sun, but the foliage is far richer in a more shaded location. The flowering hydrangeas you see in fall gardens are most likely the heat-loving P.G. varieties (P.G. is short for paniculata Grandiflora). You’ve probably seen some in tree forms as many have been grafted that way. It is quite easy to select one strong branch and train it into a tree form. Believe it or not, this hydrangea is Prairie hardy, tolerating temperatures of -35°C. Given time, the plant can become almost a tree, stretching up to 12 feet, but most folks like to keep them trimmed back to around six feet to conform to most garden situations. Its massive, pendulous cone-shaped flowers appear in mid-July and often last until late September when they take on a pinkish hue. The foliage of this fine garden plant also turns a rich bronze in fall, so it is a colourful accent in your autumn gar-
den. Little Lime, one of the hot newer varieties that turns cream then multi-coloured, is a shorter cousin I love for those sunny but more compact locations. The most compact of all is H.p. Bombshell, grow-
ing only three feet high and wide, and blooming from July through to frost with stunning pure white blooms. Angel’s Blush is another new variety that

ing the past few years. They are called Serrata or Lace Cap because a cluster of sterile flowers in the centre are surrounded by large florets of traditional hydrangea blossoms. The effect is really quite charming, and in shady locations they seem to outlast the macrophylla or common varieties. Like the big-leafed hydrangeas, however, the blossoms will turn a beautiful sea-blue in acid soils and pink or reddish-purple in chalk soils. Remember: you can change their colour by adding lime to keep them pink or aluminum sulphate to make them blue. There are now white Lace Cap varieties that look classy and elegant in any setting, and they do not change colour. One of the lesser known hydrangea varieties is the quercifolia or oak-leafed hydrangea. This handsome shrub has rather large leathery leaves resembling oak leaves, and it grows to about six feet high. This is a great plant for heavily shaded areas because the creamy white flowers, which appear in June, brighten up those dull spots, and the foliage, which turns a bright scarletcrimson in fall, is really outstanding. For small space gardens, there are now several true dwarf varieties that stay within the three foot range. Pia, Winning Edge and Pink Elf are some of the cutest little garden gnomes you’ve ever seen! The truly big news is the first ever macrophylla type that blooms on new wood. For those buds that get frozen out in a bad winter, and for those of us who prune our hydrangea to the ground each spring and get no blooms, this variety is the answer. Endless Summer is the name, and it’s a musthave for your garden. The new double varieties from Proven Winners and Ball Ornamentals are really quite something as well, offering an new look.

No Code Blue is a group of six medical professionals and two businessmen dedicated to enjoying a wide variety of music genres from jazz, rock ’n’ roll, funk to country and western. Their schedule is exclusively for fundraising causes such as hospice, wildlife protection, cancer research and sports. Over the past several years, they have performed for many organizations and worthwhile causes, raising over $200,000 for both medical charities and community groups. The members of No Code Blue hail from disparate backgrounds both musically and professionally, but they are drawn together by their friendship and their passion for music – both of which shine through in their toe-tapping performances. Rio Samaya and No Code Blue perform The Envision Twilight Concert Series continues on Friday, Aug. 2 from 7 to 8 p.m. as the Rio Samaya Band performs in Fraser River Heritage Park in Mission. Based in Vancouver, the Rio Samaya Band plays infectious music running the gamut from flamenco to Argentinean folk. They have spent the last several years travelling Canada and the world, joining with local musicians to perform in venues from Beijing to Tunisia. Born in San Jorge, Argentina, Pancho wrote poems from a young age, and moved to Europe to follow his dreams of playing the guitar and sharing his songs with the world. After years of exchange with other musicians, his original music has a wide diversity of styles. Sal, who was born in England and raised in Canada, met Pancho in Cuzco, Peru, and since then the duo have established a name for themselves. Sal compliments Pancho’s guitar with her joyful vocals, accordion, shakers, chachas, bombo and guitar. No Code Blue returns to the concert series at Fraser River Heritage Park on Aug. 7 from 7 to 8 p.m.

Basketball camp concentrates on skills, fun
The Abbotsford Basketball Club is running a camp Aug. 19-22 at W.J. Mouat Secondary. Sessions run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day, with a concentration on skill and fun games. The cost is $150 and players will receive a T-shirt but are asked to bring their own ball. For more

U-19 RUBY SQUAD TAKES GOLD Jorden Sandover-Best and Sebastian Gibson of Abbotsford helped the provincial under-19 men’s rugby team win gold at the national championships in Calgary. B.C. trailed the Prairie Wolf Pack 13-10
for much of the second half, but SandoverBest made a run to set up James Pitblado for the winning try in the dying minutes as B.C. won 15-13. Sandover-Best had the only other try in the final for B.C., which came into the gold medal game undefeated, outscoring their opponents 98-47.

Going for gold Virtanen makes Canada’s U-18 hockey squad
Abbotsford hockey prospect Jake Virtanen will soon be going for gold in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Virtanen is one of 22 players named to Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team and will chase Canada’s sixth consecutive gold medal at the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament. The Ivan Hlinka Tournament runs Aug. 5-10 in Piestany, Slovakia and Breclav, Czech Republic and is a prestigious under-18 international event. Virtanen, a 6’1”, 190-pound left winger, notched 16 goals and 18 assists in 62 games with the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen in 2012-13, his first full season of junior hockey. He was the first overall selection in the WHL bantam draft in 2011. Virtanen was one of 42 players that were invited to Canada’s U-18 selection camp in Toronto.

He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1939 and God lovingly called him home at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital, Abbotsford, BC on July 8, 2013. It is with sadness we announce the passing of our great uncle Louis D. MacDonald on July 18, 2013. Born March 17, 1921 in Nova Scotia. Louis was a veteran during 1939 ~ 1945. He also spent many years as a logger on the BC coast. He will be missed by his family and many friends who had the privilege of knowing him. The family would like to thank all the staff at Dr. Stuart Pavilion and also Dr. Bhatt for the care he received while there.

Sadly missed by his wife Shirley; son Shawn (Triva) Storey; grandsons Brandon, Mykal; father William Storey, mother-in-law Doris Daye; sister Linda (Michael) Kean, as well as many relatives and friends. He is predeceased by his mother Helen Storey and father-in-law Ken Daye. A viewing will take place on August 2, 2013 from 7 pm to 9 pm at Woodlawn Mission Funeral Home, 7386 Horne Street, Mission. A Graveside Service will be held on August 3, 2013 at 12:30 pm at Vedder View Gardens Cemetery, 44675 Watson Road, Chilliwack, BC. Nellie Bergmann of Yarrow, BC was called home by the Lord on Monday, July 29, 2013. Nellie was born in Waldheim, Ukraine, Russia to the late Peter and Agnes Klassen. In 1957, years after immigrating to Canada, Nellie met and married her true love, Ron Bergmann in Greendale, BC. Together they raised their three children on numerous farms around the Fraser Valley, and later enjoyed the company of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Nellie loved to share her talents with the community; whether volunteering in MCC, libraries and sewing groups, or just baking and cooking for her family, all were touched by her strength and her love. She leaves behind her husband of 56 years, Ron Bergmann, children Dan (Heather) Bergmann, Rick (Edi) Bergmann, and Cheryl (Dan) Gossen as well as ten grandchildren, two great grandchildren and many other family members and friends. A viewing for Nellie will be held on Thursday, August 1, 2013 at Yarrow Mennonite Brethren Church from 7:00 - 8:00 pm. PETERS, Helen July 6, 1927 - July 28, 2013 Helen (Thiessen) Peters, 86, was welcomed into the arms of Jesus on July 28, 2013, at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 52 years, Frank Peters, on October 29, 2007. Helen and Frank served as missionaries to Brazil for over 30 years, and also later as pastoral couple at King Road MB in Abbotsford and Culloden MB in Vancouver. Deeply committed to her family, Helen found much joy in being with any or all of them. Helen is lovingly remembered by her six children: Martha (and Ken) Stewart, Lydia (and Valter) Warkentim, Louise (and Heinz) Duck, David (and Laura) Peters, Daniel (and Cindy Sue) Peters, Esther (and Stan) Gubiotti. She was a fervently praying Oma for her 18 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, and will be tenderly remembered by all. SCHROEDER, Phillip Schroeder, Phillip - born October 29, 1921 in Altona, MB passed away peacefully into the presence of his Lord on July 26, 2013 with family by his side. Phillip shall be reunited with his beloved wife, Susie. He will forever be loved and fondly remembered by his children Stan, Don (Denise), Ken (Linda), Dennis (Rosanne) and Peggy (Gary); grandchildren Mike, Jeremy, Jennifer, Warren, Cynthia, Janeen, Karlee, Haylee, Tara, Karilyne and Sarah; 14 great grandchildren; brothers John and Henry; sisters Sara, Helen and Mary as well as other extended family members and cherished friends. Phillip lived his life trying to follow Christ, his Lord and Saviour. He supported both the Canadian Bible Society and the Salvation Army. Though dad was born in Manitoba, he lived most of his life in B.C. coming here when he was 17 years old. Dad married Susie Rempel on June 11, 1944 and they moved to Vancouver where Dad drove truck for several years. They returned back to the Fraser Valley and began dairy farming and later grew raspberries. During this time, dad also drove cement truck for Totem Ready Mix - one of the first cement trucks in the Fraser Valley. Later Dad became a salesman for Totem. When Totem opened a new plant in Quesnel, Dad and Mom transferred up there as manager. Eventually the plant closed, and they returned to the Fraser Valley, where Dad retired. When mom had a severe stroke, Dad took over the loving care of her for over 10 years. Mom’s wish was to be at home, and with dad’s help, she was, until her passing in 2005. Right up to the time of his death, dad lived independently in the Tabor Manor. Dad was devoted to his family and loved nothing better than spending time with them. He took the time each day to pray for each member of his family. His passion was for God’s Word and he read the Bible through several times each year. During the past few years, the Book of Revelations was his favorite, particularly the last 3 chapters. We would like to thank the amazing staff of the Ace Unit at Abbotsford Regional hospital for their care of both dad and his family, during his brief time there. Also a special thank you to Dr. Jodie Ching - words can not express our gratitude. A tea for family and friends, will be held in Dad’s honor Friday, August 2, at 2:00 pm in The Clearwood Room at Columbia Bible College, 2940 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford, B.C. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to either the Canadian Bible Society or your local Salvation Army.
