Chilliwack mom Susi Vanderwyk remembers being in tears. She was both shocked and humbled by the glowing nomination for the contest submitted by her niece Katrina Clow. Vanderwyk is now one of candidates in the Walmart Canada’s Mom of the Year contest vying for their charities, with online voting on until Aug.1. “While my first instinct is to hide behind someone’s skirts,” she wrote on her Mom of the Year Facebook page headlined ‘Meet Fun Mom Extraordinaire Susi Vanderwyk’. “I desperately love that my nomination can bring substantial funds to Families of SMA Canada, a charity that so many families rely on as a lifeline, for not only hope of a cure, but desperately needed support today.” She and her husband Bruce have three kids: Dexter, Holli and Amy. When Holli was just two she was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 2, or SMA. After a year of struggling blindly, Susi started a support group for parents called EPIC, for families dealing with a range of disabilities. There were charity dinners and dances to raise funds, says her niece, and her aunt run a summer camp for the past 13 years, inviting families who have children with SMA from across the globe to join them. If she makes it into the Top 8, it’s $10,000 for the charity, if she wins, it’s $100,000. Continued: VOTE/ p15

Education key to longboard safety: City Outright ban from city streets rejected Alina Konevski The Progress

The city of Chilliwack is keeping a close eye on longboarding following more than five serious collisions between riders and vehicles in other municipalities. The fast adrenaline-fueled sport brings participants careening down steep, windy roads at speeds estimated at 50 km/hr. The city’s public safety advisory committee advised council last week to roll out a mass education campaign. The committee wants everyone involved — longboarders, residents, and motorists — to promote safe practices, such as

wearing a helmet, yielding to cars, and having spotters at dangerous turns. The committee also urged the city to consider banning the sport on certain roads, such as those that are particularly steep and curved. Another option, to ban longboarding within city limits outright, was rejected by the committee, in recognition that longboarding is a sport like any other. “It’s kids getting out — healthy, fresh air — and (being) active. We want to encourage that. It is a sport, much like kids doing crazy things on bicycles and on skateboards and inline skates,” said

Chuck Stam, city councilor and chair of the public safety advisory committee. There are currently no city bylaws regarding longboarding, nor does the Motor Vehicle Act mention the sport, according to Cpl. Len vanNieuwenhuizen at the RCMP. Unlike in West and North Vancouver, where serious accidents from longboarding are frequently in the news, the sport has not posed significant problems in Chilliwack. The RCMP has received only nine related complaints in 2012 and 2013, all of them from residents concerned about risky practices. All were related to longboarders in Promontory, on Sylvan, Prest,

Weedon, Elkview, and Chartwell streets. “Nine complaints over 18 months reflects that it is a sporadic issue that has not required our ongoing attention,” said vanNieuwenhuizen. “Our municipal traffic unit is aware of and monitors the issue.” The RCMP only has one record of a collision involving a longboarder in Chilliwack. On May 25 this year, a 25-year-old man on a longboard cut in front of a car at the Evans roundabout, disrespecting traffic regulations, according to vanNieuwenhuizen. FVRD CEO pledges to tighten expense rules Change comes after lengthy audit to locate undocumented expenses Alina Konevski The Progress

Fraser Valley Regional District director Dennis Adamson still has an unsupported balance of expense claims after a months-long specific audit. Director Wendy Bales, also subjected to an individual audit, substantiated most of her expenses and has no balance remaining. The FVRD launched an audit of 2011 and 2012 travel expense claims for both directors after it was revealed in February that there were no supporting documents for their combined travel expenses of $42,578 for 2011. Adamson’s expense claims of $28,545.63 in 2011 were double the next highest director’s. By the end of 2012, Adamson still had not pro-

vided any supporting documents for these costs, which had already been paid out by FVRD staff. “We weren’t told to keep receipts,” Adamson told The Progress in February. Director Wendy Bales also failed to provide receipts in that timeframe for $14,032.46 of expenses for 2011. This prompted FVRD board chair Sharon Gaetz to call for a full review of the travel expenses of both directors for 2011 and 2012. The KPMG auditors combed through Adamson’s calendar to find events he attended in order to justify spending on meals, mileage, and hotels. Auditors found that Adamson travelled much more than 400 km per month, the maximum discretionary allowed.

Adamson was able to provide few or no receipts during the audit. After the review, Adamson still had $6,453 unsupported for 2011 and $5,092 for 2012. FVRD forgave $5,000 from both years in recognition of a near-forgotten policy that allows any Area B director to claim the additional amount for travel expenses. One of the largest electoral areas, Area B includes residents from Sunshine Valley up to Spuzzum. The final balance of unsupported expenses for Adamson is $1,453 for 2011 and $92 for 2012. Because all claims have been already paid out during those same years, FVRD is figuring out what to do about the final balance. At Tuesday’s FVRD board meeting, Adamson argued that much more travel is required in Area B than in any other area,

and that existing travel allowance limits are too low. “In those years when expenses were high, a lot got accomplished in the area. It was a phenomenal busy year...Value for the dollar has to be considered,” he said. Director Bales also had her 2011 and 2012 travel claims raked through. Unlike her colleague, Bales was able to provide receipts and other supporting documents for most expenses. FVRD justified the unsupported $1,503 in 2011 and $507 in 2012 as reasonable telecommunications, meals and mileage costs that were consistent with previous years. Bales has no final unsupported balance. The detailed review cost FVRD $6,100. Chief Administrative Officer Paul Gipps, who inherited the issue when he joined the regional district in April, was adamant that such a high amount

of unsupported expenses is not likely to happen again. “The likelihood of this happening again, near impossible. That’s our commitment. We have to look at how we got here, why we got here, and figure out how that can’t happen again,” said Gipps. The regional district is introducing electronic tracking sheets for expenses, and defining much more clearly what discretionary spending entails, such as which events are and are not sanctioned. “In interpreting the review it was clear that the majority of challenges around expense claims are managing the discretionary mileage allowance and associated costs and providing details related to the purpose of the meeting and who attended,” noted Gipps in a staff report. akonevski@theprogress.com twitter.com/alinakonevski

Beep. Beep. Beep beep beep beep! Carole Snider’s hand shoots up in the air. “I found it!” she yells. In her left hand she’s holding a dull, dusty token. In the other she’s gripping her metal detector. Snider just found a special token that has won her a silver coin prize. She’s one of more than 40 people taking part in the Fraser Valley Treasure Hunters’ first annual Treasure Chest at Heritage Park on Saturday. Chilliwack’s Mark Lewis is the founder of the local group which started in January and already has 45 members. The ‘hunters’ at Saturday’s event are from B.C., Alberta and Washington State and they’re using one of the outdoor sand rings for their treasure hunt. Lewis ‘salts’ the turf by pelting dozens of coins and tokens into the soft, sandy ground. The coins are from different countries, and the tokens, if found, will be traded in for prizes. All the tokens have hand-written numbers and letters on them to distinguish them from the coins. Nothing of great monetary value is planted into the sand in case the hunters don’t find them. Colin Broughton from Langley has been metal detecting for 14 years. About eight years ago, he found a 78g 14-karat gold bracelet with 22 diamonds and 32 emeralds. It was appraised at $6,200. He found it in a soccer field in Ontario. Brian Doctor of Penticton has been at it for seven years and has found coins, watches, silver, jew-

ellery and more. He finds about $600-$700 per year in treasures. But it’s not all about the money or the thrill of finding lost items. The hunters are doing a public service to their communities by returning jewellery to their rightful owners. “We return stuff whenever we can,” says Doctor. School rings are the most common pieces returned. It’s easy to find the owner of the class rings as the person’s name, school and year are all engraved on them.

A lot of the items found are old have been buried for years, but when the hunters find something that they believe has a chance of being returned, or appears to have been recently lost, they will try to locate the owner as best they can, including searching the ‘lost’ ads in their local newspapers. Sometimes people have called metal detecting clubs directly to see if a member can help them find their lost item at the location it went missing. Finding the lost item has proved successful on

more than one occasion. Like the time a woman lost her 18-karat solitaire diamond wedding ring on a beach in Penticton. She called the Penticton Metal Detectors Club and the ring was found within 15 minutes. “It’s really great to give back to the owners,” says Broughton. You may not have noticed the free bus ride coupons tucked into your 2013 municipal tax notice envelope. While the city and police deliberate on the sport, longboarders give new use to the hills of Promontory. On Weeden Drive last week, 19-yearold Nick Hurley practised some of his “slides,” a move that has a longboarder crouch low with his hand on the concrete in order to turn or stop. Unlike skateboarders, longboarders do not do tricks like flips or grinding on rails. Longboards are significantly longer and wider than skateboards, and have larger wheels, which makes them more stable on concrete and allows them to go much faster. Because of this, more people use longboards for commuting than racing down hills. Hurley estimates that there are about 40–50 serious downhill longboarders in Chilliwack, and several hundred casuals who use the boards for commut-

ing on city streets. According to Flynn, co-owner of Chilliwack’s The Truth Skate & Snow Shop, there will be increasingly more longboarders on the streets. “It’s been growing exponentially over the last couple of summers Canada-wide, not just in Chilliwack. It’s the fastest-growing segment of the skateboard market,” he said. For the serious riders, the big draw to the sport is speed. “I’ve always liked going really, really fast,” said Hurley, who is one of the first people to take up the sport in Chilliwack four years ago. He now competes in races around North America — sometimes riding as fast as 100 km/ hr — under sponsorship of Chilliwack’s skateshop and a board manufacturer. Hurley values safe riding, and recognizes that the sport might alarm onlookers. “We know we’re in control, we know we’re not going to fall, but they (drivers and residents) don’t know that, and it’s

terrifying to people.” He promotes safe practices to young people getting into the sport during regular workshops. “Once other people started getting into it, we gotta try and let people know that it’s not just a free-for-all,” he said. “You can’t just go down the hill, go and pass cars, disrespect people. Because it’s just as much their road as it is everybody

else’s.” Not all riders come to the sessions, though. And while Hurley can cut speed and move to the sidewalk easily, the newer riders may not have that skill. Hurley believes an outright ban on the sport within city limits would just encourage riders, but sees the benefit of bans on certain roads. It does depend on which

roads, though. “We do need certain roads to practise on,” he said. North Vancouver has banned longboards on certain roads, and issues fines for riders who disregard others on the road. will be a collection of activities, such as jumping on a giant air pillow at the Chilliwack Corn Maze, spotting wildlife at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve, and touring the processing plant at Happy Days Goat Dairy Farm. Children under 18 ride free on Sunday. Adult tickets are $15. To ride in both the Chilliwack and Agassiz tours, the latter of which happens on Saturday, it’s $25. Registration is online, or in person at the visitor centre (44150 Luckakuck Way) on event day, July 28. Volunteers are needed to help out for a few hours with parking and traffic control, cleanup, shopping pick-up, and removing route signs at the end of the day. Tapping the LNG boom

British Columbia’s need for skilled workers is good news for Chilliwack. But it will take more than encouragement by industry to meet the expected demand. It will take money. This week the B.C. Natural Gas Workforce Strategy Committee released a report saying B.C.’s burgeoning liquified natural gas industry would generate 75,000 permanent jobs by 2021, in addition to the 60,000 jobs created during the construction process. The challenge will be finding enough skilled talent to fill those positions. That’s where Chilliwack comes in. Industry will to draw workers from across Canada and even overseas to meet the expected demand. However, Chilliwack – home to the University of the Fraser Valley’s Trades and Technology Centre – will play a key role in helping fill that gap. The state-of-the-art facility provides training in a number of the disciplines that will be essential during the construction phase and after the LNG export facilities are built on B.C.’s West Coast. But key to that success will be continued funding and support from pubic and private sectors. True, the province is currently running a deficit of more than $1.1 billion. However, it also stands to gain significant tax revenue from the LNG projects in the years to come. Investing some of that expected money in education infrastructure now will ensure British Columbians have the skills necessary to participate in this opportunity. But the responsibility should not rest with the province alone. Private industry will also benefit from expansion of LNG exports. It’s important that the private sector play a role in the education of the workforce they will be counting on, either by opening sufficient apprentice opportunities, or direct funding of additional seats at trades and technology centres like UFV’s. The future of LNG exports in B.C. is a promising one. However, targetted investments in education now will help ensure benefits from this development are kept close to home. Green MLA discusses coal and controversy After climate scientist-turnedGreen Party MLA Andrew Weaver had a taste of debate in the B.C. legislature, I asked him for his impressions on that and other issues. Excerpts from that discussion: TF: You did a study comparing burning all the world’s coal reserves and all oil reserves, showing how big coal really is. The federal government says that when you add up what’s actually being used in North America, carbon emissions from coal are about 30 times more than from oil. Now we have a symbolic coal export ban in Vancouver, which doesn’t apply to Port Moody or Point Roberts or Prince Rupert. Do you think there’s any significance to this? AW: There is no question that the biggest issue around is coal, because coal use is on the rise world-wide. Not in the United

States, because they’re converting [power production] to natural gas. This is why American producers are saying, let’s ship it to Asia. California says no, Oregon says no, Washington says no. Vancouver says no, British Columbia, not sure. It’s pushing us to start thinking about what I think Tom is going to be the FLETCHER greatest industrial revolution the world has ever seen, which is transformation of energy systems away from our combustion approach, which is essentially what we’ve been doing since we were in caves. We’ve gone from burning wood to now fossil wood, and fossil plants and fossil algae, to a much more modern era

of production of energy through natural means, solar, wind, geothermal etc. TF: Liquified natural gas. The NDP says they are absolutely in favour of that now. AW: I have questioned the economics of it from day one. There’s a market differential that exists now. There’s that small window because Japan is moving from nuclear to natural gas. But we’re way behind everyone else. TF: Thirty years ago, Japan played Australia and B.C. off for metallurgical coal. Those northeast B.C. coal mines are back up and running again, but you’re seeing a similar thing here? AW: Yes. And if we start shipping natural gas to Asia … the Asian price comes down, the North American price goes up. British Columbians haven’t been told that.

TF: How has the legislature session been for you? AW: I sit there and watch the two parties. Rhetorical question, condescending answer. Rhetorical question, condescending answer. And I hope more British Columbians watch this, because this needs to change. And I think it can change. TF: The NDP opposition decides when you and Delta South Independent Vicki Huntington get your occasional moments in question period? AW: Yes, and if I’ve asked it’s been no problem. TF: Grudgingly no doubt. If the NDP had their way, the closest Green Party member would be in Holland. AW: [Laughs] Yes. Certainly not in North America. There’s this sense of entitlement within the NDP to the ‘green’ vote. And I

sense that the B.C. Liberals very much like our existence, as being not NDP. The reality is, we take as many Liberal votes, if not more. It’s because what it means to be ‘green’ has moved out of what the NDP view as green, which is a tree hugger. It’s kids going to school, talking about conservation, and going home to talk to their parents. That’s where our votes are coming from. TF: Are you going to be found standing in front of a coal train any time soon? AW: No, never. They asked me to, and I said no, because I don’t believe in civil disobedience. Action needed on summer noise It is outrageous the amount of noise the downtown residents of Chilliwack are expected to put up with. I see no effective policing of vehicle noise or driving behaviour, especially at the corner of Wellington and Corbould. Chilliwack is definitely one of the noisiest little cities I know of. Obviously noise is necessary, but squealing tires (demonstrating the intent to speed), non (or minimally mufflered motorbikes

and vehicles, booming car stereo systems catering to those who feel the need to attract attention through noise makes this city a very uncomfortable and disrespectfully noisy. This problem is much more evident in the summer with more outdoor activity. I’ve written letters to the City of Chilliwack, the RCMP (and the newspaper) about this before and all I get are placating statements and excuses and a pass-

Our friends went to find help, someone with a boat or some way of getting me back to shore. My husband held me and kept my head above water (apparently I couldn’t feel my legs) while treading water and hanging on to the side of the Seadoo. My friends found someone with a boat that had a low ledge for skiing. They managed to get me out of the water and onto the ledge. I do remember feeling incredible pain every wave we touched! Boating accident brings out the best On July 6 I finished work and went to Cultus Lake to join my husband and some of our friends with their kids. It was a beautiful day, approximately 5:30 in the afternoon. One of our friends has two Seadoos and they were on one and my husband and I were on the other one. We were on the far side of the lake (we were near the dog beach at start) floating and enjoying the view and our friends were coming up behind us when the Seadoo they were on stalled which disabled the steering. Unable to avoid us, unfortunately they ran into us. I was thrown into the water and I’m told unconscious. The rest of the story was told to me in the hospital.

A high-risk repeat sex offender released into the Chilliwack-Hope area just last week is already back in custody after breaching his probation conditions. Forty-six year old Graham James Lackey was released from the Ford Mountain Institution, and plain-clothes RCMP officers kept an eye on him. Around 9:18 p.m. Friday night, he was re-arrested. Police say Lackey had gone to Hope Memorial Park on a night when kids’ movies were being shown. When he was picked up, drugs were found on him, RCMP add. A third breach occurred when he allegedly contacted a person under the age of 16. “Our officers were very diligent and worked long hours in conducting surveillance and monitoring Lackey’s behaviour,” said RCMP Cpl. Len vanNieuwenhuizen. “The safety of the community was our paramount concern. When notification was made of Lackey’s release we acted swiftly to put this surveillance plan in place.” Lackey appeared in court Monday and he has been charged with three counts of breach probation order. He’ll make another court appearance July 29.

A vote for Chilliwack mom would help spinal muscular atrophy group VOTE from Front “But tell people, they’re not voting for me,” she said humbly. “It’s for SMA Canada.” As well as organizing the camp, Susi and Bruce host events on their dairy farm, throughout the year. They have Easter egg hunts, Christmas parties and camp fires, all for families with children who have SMA. But that’s wasn’t quite enough. A couple of years ago when the president of Families of SMA Canada stepped down, Vanderwyk stepped up again for her community and stepped into a role as president of a nationwide charity.

The group is actually a “lifeline” for families who often feel like their lives are shattered post-diagnosis, and suddenly alienated from everyone else. “You can have compassion and understanding, but you just don’t get it the way other SMA parents get it.” They send out a care package with lots of info to parents on how to handle the most confounding questions. “The biggest thing that comes out of that package is the feeling that they’re not alone,” she said. Some things she does, only her family knows, says Susi’s daughter Holly. It’s quite the list she enu-

merates. Don’t try to say it all in one breath! “She has been our school PAC president for several years, tutored kids with learning challenges, donated anonymously to underprivileged families at Christmas with gifts on door steps, donated to teen mom programs, sat up for many nights with parents of children who were dying at Canuck Place, help my brother and I start a charity, has taught us kids the meaning of compassion and giving for raising Christmas gifts for underprivileged teens, gives food to families in need, donated to independent living teens, sent equipment and supplies to third

The Centre is hosting an open house on Saturday, July 27, to coincide with the Agassiz Slow Food Cycle tour. Find out how the experts at PARC-Agassiz are contributing to modern agriculture by helping the sector produce healthier, safer, higher quality, and more sustainable food for Canadians. Whether it’s integrated pest management, horticulture, or nutrient management, research at the Centre covers a range of topics important in the Fraser Valley and

beyond. “The open house is a great way for local residents to interact with our employees and learn about the agricultural research that is taking place in B.C.,” says Dr. Sankaran KrishnaRaj, Director of Operations at PARC-Agassiz. “It’s something that we look forward to every year because of the opportunity it gives people to

Gordon Low PENNER back pain in golfers is often caused by poor abdominal stability and core strength, making it easy for the back to extend and compress the lumbar spine. Over time, this leads to pain and discomfort on the day of, and possibly arthritis in the future. Lower back pain can be frustrating, but there is always a reason behind the lower back pain. Once the golfer is assessed and the culprit behind the problem is found, the golfer can start strengthening and stretching the correct muscles to minimize or prevent low back pain.

There are 4 common reasons behind lower back pain in golf. ‘S’ Posture: Excessive arching (lordosis) of the lower back upon address of the golf ball. This posture causes inhibition of the abdominal and gluteal muscles, two groups of muscles that are very important in protecting the spine and generating power in the golf swing. In normal posture the pelvis should be tilted forward slightly, keeping a neutral spine. During lessons many golfers are taught to stick their butt out and in doing so go into hyperlordosis (excessive arching). This immediately inhibits the abdominals and gluteals. One other reason you may have an “S” Posture is if you experience lower crossed syndrome where the hip flexors and lower back are very tight and the abdominals and gluteals are weak. Many office workers and individuals with poor abdominal tone develop this as your body finds the path of least resistance and utilizes the strongest muscles. Reverse Spine Angle: This occurs when a golfer utilizes their back muscles to go into extension on the backswing. This will directly affect the rate and amount of crunch factor that the lumbar spine will be subject to at impact of the golf ball. With a reverse spine angle a slice is often the direct result of this swing fault. This is most often a direct result of poor abdominal tone and gluteal strength. It can also be related to a lack of proper instruction as to the correct follow through for a golf swing. Early Extension: This occurs when a golfer extends their hips and spine during the downswing. When this occurs the abdominals are inhibited and prevents the abdominals from being able to absorb the impact on the spine during the crunch phase. This Continued: GOLF/ p29

Chilliwack’s Inez Jasper kicks off her new tour with an appearance on the 2013 Aboriginal People’s Choice Awards live on Sunday, Aug. 21 on APTN.

Chilliwack’s own Inez Jasper is poised for the release of her longawaited second release, Burn Me Down, on Aug. 1. Inez modestly calls herself “a small-town girl from the rez” in her bio, but her polished and powerful songs, and upbeat style are likely going to smash through musical barriers with the latest work. The 10 tracks on the new album are moving more into dance territory with pop elements and features by Fawn Wood, Jon-C, and samples of Sto:lo traditional singing by her cousin, BIG PHIL. The Progress reported in April how the young powerhouse grew

incensed during the video shoot in Chilliwack this spring for the first single, Dancin’ on the Run, when a noise complaint about the loud drumming brought out police to the reserve. The life-affirming music video, directed by filmmaker Cowboy Smithx, sees Inez and friends on the run from the Indian Agent, an evil figure in black who catches them drumming and singing. They run to celebrate the survival of their vibrant culture, despite the efforts of the colonizers to wipe it out. She said she found it ironic, and felt it showed a distinct lack of understanding on the part of the neighbours. The song is actually an anthem to the survival of First Nations culture, in the face of the uncon-

scionable Potlatch Ban of 1884. These days more young indigenous people are encouraged to take up their culture with traditional drumming, dancing and singing, and Inez proudly came from that world in her youth. “There were people who served jail time, or had to run from the Indian agent so they wouldn’t be caught practising their culture,” said Jasper, after the shoot on the Skowkale reserve. During the cutting-edge video, the lyrics flash on the screen, explaining that one of the first people to be prosecuted under the hateful anti-potlatch laws was from Skowkale, bringing the whole story full circle for the local artist. “Stories are coming out about the intricate network of messengers, and runners at the time who

It is a well-known axiom that location is one of the most important elements in the value of a property. Let’s take that one step further. A good investment buy would be a sound property in an area that will increase in value in the future. Buying into an area that is strongly on the comeback is one way of having a successful real estate investment. Trend is everything. The trick is to get in so that you are one of the earliest pioneers. It is safer to buy into an area after the restoration trend is unmistakably established. What are some of the factors to consider when evaluating properties as good investments? A neighborhood that is a good candidate for restoration must have an intrinsic location advantage and also good basic homes. Some neighborhoods have a certain distinction that attracts buyers, but there are other factors to take into account. A house in a good location may have a few points subtracted if it is located on a busy street. Houses located on busy streets may represent some of the best buys in terms of space and amenities for the price. However, some buyers who are very sensitive to noise or concerned about small children or pets, may automatically rule out houses that are located on busy residential streets. Other buyers don’t share these same concerns and will find many benefits to a house in these types of locations. Another factor to consider is if the sellers have made pricing concessions on the property based on its location, you may have to pass on a similar price break to the next owner.

There are some buyers who would like to be close to schools, shopping, and churches, but don’t want to live across the street from these facilities, or may want an easy commute to their job, but would not consider a location close to the main road. As you balance all of the factors, remember that a location liability which gets you a great house at a reasonable price, will probably require you to pass a similar savings on to future buyers. Island 22 bike park a hit with riders new and old Barry Stewart, Black Press

X-Game wannabes and saner cyclists wanting to build their off-road skills should check out the new bike park at Island 22, near the north end of Young Road in Chilliwack. It opened on April 20 and has already earned a 5-star rating from Trailforks.com. The facility was designed and built by North Vancouver’s Jay Hoots and crew, with $200,000 in funding from the City of Chilliwack. Island 22 is owned by the city but operated by the Fraser Valley Regional District, which will be maintaining the site.

“We received input from the local riding community and Hoots Inc. was invaluable in designing a park that would appeal to riders of all levels,” said Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz. “[This] is a destination park and we are pleased that it is heavily used by people throughout the region.” Being a communitysponsored bike park — unlike a back yard or bush site — safety concerns are at the forefront. It’s still a ‘use at your own risk’ area, with helmets mandatory and chest and leg protection recommended. But it’s designed to be as safe as possible, and riders

are not permitted to make alterations to the site. “Designing, building and maintaining a bike park to specific standards addresses legal and liability concerns,” explained Gaetz. “All the trails are clearly marked, from green circles for beginners to black diamonds for expert riders, and we encourage all riders to ride within their limit and wear a helmet.” For beginners, there are basic trails and a wide, slightly-raised board walk that most riders should be able to handle. Balance skills can be practiced on raised logs that have been flat-topped and

grooved for grip. There are also progression jumps and flow return jumps with bermed turns. And then there are the big-air jumps, with half-pipe launchers. If you’ve got the confidence — and hopefully some skill — you can go a little crazy here, because the landing slope is made of soft sand. Bike mechanic Will Miller, of Pedal Sport on Young Road said, “The sand jump is probably the most popular, because it doesn’t hurt as much.” Chilliwack resident Garry Race and his Mission-based friend Rory Girard were at the

park for their first time on Canada Day. Both were riding full-suspension downhill bikes, which aren’t ideal for this location, as there’s not a lot of gravity drop before the jumps. They really had to work the pedals, losing a lot of their effort into the rear suspension. They were still able to sky the jumps — but they were gassed after a handful of passes, so they spent some time on their balance skills. BMX or hard-tail mountain bikes are recommended for this park. “That was my first time to bike park. It was great,” said Race. “Any time you have jumps and stunts to learn on

in a beautiful setting like Island 22, you can’t complain.” Well, there was a little complaint about the location. Race had an SUV to get there but he sympathized with kids — especially from the Sardis side of Chillliwack — who have to pedal all the way. Miller agreed, also pointing out the high water seepage from the Fraser River that can shut down the park during the spring freshet. But hey, unlike the former Sardis jumps at Sheffield Way and Webb Ave., this is land that cannot be otherwise developed because of its proximity to the

river, so it has a permanent home, as long as riders make use of it — and being under the supervision of FVRD staff, the park will be maintained to its design specifications. Cost for riders? It’s free. If you want to park nearby, there’s a $5 day use fee for your vehicle, or a $25 season’s pass. “This is a cost recovery system for security to observe the safety of the vehicles in the lot,” Gaetz said. “It helps prevent theft and vandalism. “If you want to park for free, you don’t have to go beyond the gates. You can park along the dyke at no cost.”

Johnson prevails at Peach Classic Chilliwack’s Robert Johnson took top spot at the Peach Classic triathlon, held last weekend in Penticton. Johnson won the sprint-distance event with a time of 1:06.05, two minutes and 29 seconds better than Vancouver’s Carsten Lapointe.

Johnson competed in the men’s 30-34 division. He had the third fastest swim time, covering 750 metres in 11 minutes and 28 seconds. Johnson dominated the bike stage, covering 20 kilometres in 35 minutes and 35 seconds. He had the lead heading

into the five kilometre run stage, and covered the course in 17 minutes and 29 seconds to wrap up the win. Rosedale’s Allan Beiber took the title in the men’s 55-59 division with a time of 1:15.27. He had the fastest time in each of the three stages to beat

Toth tuning up for Challenge Penticton Chilliwack’s Anthony Toth raced the Lake Stevens Ironman 70.3 last weekend, finishing 12th overall in a 23 man professional field. The event, held near Seattle, was half the distance of a full Ironman, and Toth got off to a sluggish start. Toth was experimenting with no pre-race caffeine and it may have affected him in the first stage. The swim is typically

Toth’s weakest event, and he was competing against a bunch of Australians. “I haven’t met one yet that can’t swim fast,” he laughed. Toth took 28 minutes and 27 seconds to complete the stage, and found himself six minutes behind the leaders coming out of the water. Toth made up time in the bike stage, clocking in at 2:25.05. He completed the

run in 1:19:24 for a total time of 4:15:35. He finished 20 minutes and 12 seconds behind the race winner, Australia’s Craig Alexander. “I had a bike and run combo that would have put me closer to the top five, but the swim time is killing my overall result,” Toth lamented. “Still, I feel I am on a good pace towards peaking for the Challenge Penticton. Next I will be doing a

sprint race in Kelowna.” Challenge Penticton replaces Ironman Penticton, which is no longer being held in the Okanagan city. The Challenge series of races are held all over the world, but this is the first one to be held in North America. Sports California roll Seven members of the Cheam Vaulters equestrian vaulting club competed in California July 12-14 at the CVI Pacific Cup, a competition officially recognized by the International Equestrian Federation. Elite athletes progressed through three categories known as 1*, 2* and 3*. Cassie Sponchia competed in the 1* U-18 class, finishing eighth with a score of 6.102, exceeding the requirements to progress to 2*. Teammate Taylor Eamor was solid in her international debut as an individual vaulter. Also at the 1* level, Alisa Schmidt-Anema and Darla Ricka competed in the pairs event, placing second and earning the qualifying scores necessary to progress to the 2* level. Bell, George

George passed away July 14, 2013 at age 76 surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife Beverley; children: Marguarite (Wayne), Douglas (Cheryl), Melody (Manfred); grandchildren: Jennifer (Bob), Rebecca, Justin (Kassidy); sister Pat and many nieces and nephews. George loved spending time outdoors, camping, fishing and hunting with his family and buddies. He was always ready to go on a road trip and later in life cruising. George will be fondly remembered for his-story telling and how he always brought about laughter with his ever-present sense of humour.

We sadly announce after a two-year courageous battle with cancer, Phillip Joseph Beauchene peacefully passed away on July 17th 2013 at the age of 63 in Chilliwack B.C. His last days were spent with family at his side. Joe was born in Port Coquitlam B.C. on January 10th, 1950 to the late Phillip and Betty Beauchene. He married Phyllis (nee Imhoff) on March 25th, 1972 in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia. Joe spent 27 years in the Canadian Military and retired as Master Warrant Officer in the Air Force. During his service in the military, he worked as a (PERI) Physical Educational Recreational Instructor. Throughout his military career, he was posted to the following Canadian Forces Bases: Cornwallis, N.S.; Ramore, Ont.; Bermuda; Edmonton, Alt.; Alert, N.W.T.; Borden, Ont.; Lahr, Germany; and Chilliwack, B.C. He received a Military Order of Merit for his dedication and commitment to the military community in 1990, awarded by the Governor General of Canada. After his retirement from the Military, Joe joined the Correctional Services of Canada as a Federal Correctional Officer. During this time, Joe inspired many people he worked with, especially the new recruits whom he mentored. Joe’s organizational skills and ideas continue to be utilized to this day. Joe was passionately involved in every aspect of his community. He was elected as the Mayor of Kippenhiemwieler while serving in Lahr, Germany and helped foster everlasting relations between the Canadian Military and the German community. While living in Chilliwack, Joe organized yearly golf fundraisers for the B.C. Children’s Hospital. In his last few years, Joe strongly advocated for Canada’s Veterans. In 2012, he received the Diamond Jubilee Medal for his dedication to Canada and the community. Joe was a devoted and loving husband and father, and the world’s best grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife Phyllis; his two sons and their wives, Jason (Jihye) and Michael (Jennifer). Joe also has two precious grandchildren Spencer and Sophia. He also leaves his brother Albert, and sister Barbara. Joe will be remembered for his love of golf, his good sense of humour, his compassionate heart, his courage and his devotion to family.
