William Gordon Robert Elliott pleaded guilty Friday to the second-degree murders of Stone and Jones and will appear in Duncan court, between Dec. 16 and 20, for official sentencing, Crown counsel Neil MacKenzie said. That’s when Judge Keith Bracken is expected to rule on Elliott’s parole-eligibility date of anywhere between 10 and 25 years. ‘”Elliott will get an automatic life sentence, but the court will determine how long he’ll serve before being eligible for parole,” MacKenzie told the News Leader Pictorial. Her burnt remains were found in a wooded area of Glenora on July 12, 2010. Jones was 18 when she went missing on Jan. 22, 2011. Her naked, unburned body was recovered from a wooded area off Duncan’s Indian Road on Jan. 28, 2011. entencing of a local Mountie convicted of shooting an unarmed Chemainus man in 2009 has been moved out of Cowichan and set back another month. Const. David Pompeo, of North Cowichan/Duncan’s RCMP detachment, is next to appear Aug. 26 and 27 in Colwood provincial court, where he’ll face punishment for aggravated assault for shooting Bill Gillespie in September 2009 on a driveway near Chemainus. The move to Colwood is due to scheduling. The adjournment itself is because Tuesday morning the lawyers had not yet provided the judge with all the information he was looking for. An exasperated Judge Josiah Wood allowed an oral adjournment application from Crown, and Pompeo’s lawyer Ravi Hira. “I wanted to hear your arguments,” Wood told Hira. Instead, the judge received documents about constitutional matters that had been expected July 8. Raji Mangat, a B.C. Civil Liberties’ lawyer, said she is very curious about what’s in those documents, adding Wood could have denied the adjournment and proceeded with the scheduled sentencing. Crown counsel Neil MacKenzie noted there’s no specific time limit for sentencing Pompeo, explaining there had been private talks about the case between Crown and the cop’s defense counsel. more on A4

ATV rollover sends one man to hospital

An air ambulance lifted a man from the bank of the Cowichan River after an ATV accident east of Lake Cowichan earlier this month. According to a press release from the Lake Cowichan RCMP, tight terrain hampered rescue efforts after the man suffered non-life-threatening injuries when his ATV rolled during the afternoon of Sunday, July 14. The incident took place in the wooded area between

Riverbottom Road and the Skutz Falls mainline. A fellow rider of the injured man led emergency crews to the crash. However, crews were only able to make it four kilometres before the trail became too narrow, and vehicles could go no further. A team set off on foot to attend to the injured man, while others waited for all-terrain transport for further assistance. Once located, the injured man, who was in stable condition, was loaded onto a stretcher and

carried approximately one kilometre to the bank of the Cowichan River, where the B.C. Air Ambulance was able to land. The man was loaded aboard and taken to hospital. Police did not release the man’s name. They would like to remind people who are engaging in wilderness activities to bring a phone, GPS or satellite phone, for emergencies.

usan Simmons said swimming the length of Cowichan Lake in one day was one of the most difficult things she’s ever done. But talking to her the day after, she leaves the impression it’s also one of the best things she has done. “It was epic,” the Victoria resident said of her 34-kilometre swim, which took place Saturday. “It was an incredible swim. It was a tough swim, probably the hardest thing I’ve done in my life.” And it’s not like she’s led a sheltered life either. Simmons, 48, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis close to 20 years ago. She’s been swimming for eight years. Two years ago, she swam with an all-women’s relay team across the Strait of Georgia. Last year, she did a solo 10-kilometre swim in Vancouver Open Water Swim’s Bay Challenge. But this was her ultimate challenge. Joined by Alex Cape, a fellow member of the Victoria Masters Swim Club, Simmons hit the water to raise money for the MS Society and inspire people with MS to be active. Thirty-four kilometres after leaving Heather Campground, they landed at Lakeview Park at 6:25 p.m. “We came up to the beach, and all you could hear was people yelling — and it’s very hard to hear from the water, so they must have been really loud,” said Simmons. “They had a red carpet for us, and they brought the bell from the Great Lake Walk for us to ring.” They had been joined in their journey at various times by paddlers and swimmers Lauren Westmacott, Ray Este, Bjarne Hansen, Barbara Kay-Peck, Pam Loadman, Ian Graeme, Carol Pilon, Dale Robinson, Carol Pal, Shannon Davis, Len Martel, Russ Cape, Janet Neale, Rod Carmichael, Martin Fige, Avila Rhodes and Emma Becky. Becky, 18, was the only one to paddle the entire length of the lake. Loadman also swam. They had a festive barbecue with food donated by Country Grocer, where they collected donations. Campsites at Lakeview Park were donated by Dalton Smith, who also made it possible for them to have their barbecue at the park. “I really want to thank people,” said Simmons. She was particularly happy to share this experience with Cape. “I couldn’t have done this without Alex,” she said. “She’s my friend for life, and I owe her so much.” Simmons said her main motivation was to inspire people who have MS. “I have discovered that for myself, swimming in particular helps me with my MS,” she said. “I started eight years ago, and at that time, I was very unhealthy, very low-energy, a lot of fatigue and a lot of MS symptoms that were getting worse.” Simmons no longer has those symptoms,

After nearly 12 hours in the water, 48-year-old Susan Simmons completes her 34-kilometre swim, the length of Cowichan Lake, by walking up the beach and ringing the bell. Simmons commented about the swim saying she never wants to eat another gel pack of food again. Throughout the day, food and water were carefully transferred to her by her support team. like numbness in her arms and legs and problems with balance. “What it’s meant is I’m able to actively participate in the world,” she said. “In part, I do it for me to keep me healthy, but the other thing is I want people to know there is the possibility (fitness) may work for them too — it’s not going to work for everyone, but for some people, it will.” She chose Cowichan Lake because she wants to help people in south Vancouver Island. “It was important for me to do something in my own community, which is the southern part of the island,” she said. “The funds are going to MS and 50 per cent

“Judge Wood wanted additional time to prepare for sentencing,” MacKenzie said. But Gillespie and Mangat were shocked more time was granted to the case that’s dragged on for nearly four years, leading to Pompeo’s Feb. 14 conviction. “We think there’s been ample time to prepare,” Mangat said. “We’re calling on the RCMP to start an internal investigation about Const. Pompeo.” Pompeo and Hira declined to talk to the press. But Gillespie told reporters he was disgusted by another adjournment. “We thought it would be case closed today,” Gillespie said of what he called his “nightmare” continuing for at least another month. “It’s time the public started asking what’s going on here. “There’s no closure here for me. They’re just trying to wear me down. I don’t think Pompeo will get any (jail) time; they gave the police preferential treatment.” Pompeo has testified he believed Gillespie was reaching for a weapon inside his clothing when he pulled the trigger, leaving a 9-mm slug sitting near Gillespie’s spine. He called Pompeo “trigger-happy,” noting the painful impact of the bullet inside him. “It grinds; it’s a huge bullet. Four of my discs and four vertebrae are pulverized. Anytime (the slug) clicks, (pain) shoots down my fingertips and into my toes.” Meanwhile, it was believed Pompeo continues working on restricted, non-operational duties with the Nanaimo RCMP. He was previously not interacting with the public, and didn’t have access to weapons, the RCMP have said. It was also unclear at press time Tuesday who’s paying Pompeo’s legal bills — MacKenzie, Hira and Pompeo declined to say if those growing tabs are being paid by taxpayers.

Elliott confesses his murders to phoney ‘crime boss’ from A1

Police first believed the two homicides weren’t connected, but later learned differently after investigators of both murders invented an undercover crime-boss operation, Crown lawyer Scott Van Alstine said. Elliott was recruited into the fake crime organization where all players were undercover cops. He, ultimately, revealed details of his crimes. Elliott told how, when his wife was out of town, he picked up Stone, took her home and had consensual sex. When Stone threatened to tell his wife, Elliott hit her on the head with a baseball bat, the court heard. “He put her in the back of his pickup truck

along with a can of gasoline. He drove to a remote area of Duncan, into the woods. He poured gas over her and set her on fire. She was alive at the outset while she burned,” Van Alstine said. DNA from Stone’s body was matched to Elliott, who provided a sample Feb. 19, 2011. Police obtained a warrant, searched his home, and took wall swabs of a blood-like stain that contained Stone’s DNA, court heard. In the Jones killing, Elliott told the fake crime boss he accidentally hit Jones with his truck while she was walking to meet a friend at Duncan’s Superstore. Elliott put Jones in the back of his pickup, then drove behind the Shaker cemetery, along a dirt track leading to the woods.

“She was alive and he attempted to sexually assault her,” explained Crown. “He took her clothes off and choked her with her own bra. He hit her on the head, her teeth and her eyes with a stick and left her there. Then he took her clothes and burned them,” Van Alstine said. Elliott re-enacted the killings for the crime boss, Crown said, and voluntarily produced a bag of items linked to Stone’s murder. That sack contained her upper denture plate, and a baseball bat holding her DNA. Elliott was arrested shortly afterward, and told RCMP what he told the crime boss was true. Elliott has apologized to Stone and Jim during a private meeting, MacKenzie said.

Duncan man dead in highway crash

uncan’s Cory Cobb has been identified as the man killed during Thursday’s two-vehicle collision along Mill Bay Road. Shawnigan Lake RCMP are still probing details concerning the fatality that also injured the passenger in Cobb’s quad-cab pickup, and the driver of a dump truck hauling a pup-trailer. Those two men were treated by paramedics on scene, the Mounties’ release says of the 2:48 p.m. tragedy. Emergency services responded to the intersection of Mill Bay Road

and Trowse Road for the motor vehicle incident. Preliminary investigation has determined the pick-up truck had been northbound on Trowse, and collided with a dump truck that was eastbound on Mill Bay Road, Cpl. Jason Kerr says. “The 51-year-old male driver of the pick-up truck was transported to Victoria General Hospital by B.C. Ambulance where he succumbed to his injuries.” The Leader’s source says Cobb was 49 years old. He left behind a wife, Lisa, and a 12-year-old son, Jake. Family friend Paula Marchessault has set up a trust fund account at Island Savings Credit Union to assist Cobb’s wife and son.

She has known Cobb for 33 years. “It’s very tragic,” she said. “A lot of people know him around here. He will be greatly missed.” “He always had a smile on his face and he was a very patient and kind and honest person,” she remembered. Folks who would like to make a donation to the family through the trust account can so by dropping by Duncan’s Island Savings branch. While the accident investigation is in the initial phases, alcohol has been ruled out as being involved. “Other possible contributing factors are being investigated,” states Kerr. Participants will meet at Quarry Nature Park at 5:00 pm and will work until approximately 7:30 pm. The project involves deactivation of an unauthorized trail to reduce erosion and damage to local vegetation. All tools and refreshments will be provided. Duncan-born justice minister aims to clear backlogs, reduce crime

.C.’s Duncan-born attorney general and justice minister, Suzanne Anton, aims to curb impaired drivers, and act on recommendations from the Missing Women Commission of Inquiry. “I have fond memories of Duncan, and my family and I continue to gather in Duncan for family reunions,” the province’s new AG emailed the News Leader Pictorial.

“We all agree that there is nowhere better to swim in the summer than the Cowichan River.” For now, Anton’s swimming upstream in the busy post she assumed June 10 from Shirley Bond. “I will work to achieve the mandate the premier has outlined for me,” the lawyer and VancouverFraserview’s Liberal MLA says. “Our government is committed to protecting the public safety of British Columbians, and ensuring our justice system is timely, transparent and has the confidence of the public.”

While the former Vancouver city councillor said crime is at its lowest rate in nearly four decades “we’re not done, and we continue work on crime-reduction strategies.” That includes increasing access to justice, and clearing backlogs in courts such as Duncan’s, the former math teacher with CUSO explained. “We will do all of this with an eye to being efficient and cost-effective – reforming our justice system to improve the service it provides to British Columbians, while balancing the ministry budget.”

Fast and Furious makes a comeback in Cow Bay Boat Festival

owichan Bay Maritime Centre’s annual Boat Festival has stood the test of time. And that’s likely due to overwhelming community support attached to an event that perfectly translates West Coast and maritime living, organizer Kate Rossetto said. “It very much reflects our West Coast life,” said Rossetto, of the festival that should draw big crowds to the seaside community this Saturday. “A lot of people are affected and enchanted by maritime life and we live in a community that loves this celebration.” Rossetto said folks are also very much tickled the festival’s Fast and Furious Boat Building Contest is in the works for this year’s shindig. “It’s been resurrected, because it’s been such a big part of the community fun,” she said. In previous years, that portion of the day’s roster has been cut because of a lack of volunteers. This year, it’s back with a vengeance and includes a cash prize split from entry fees. Teams pay $50 to enter with a maximum of five folks, and there’s a limit of $100 that can be spent on materials. “Now this is where it’s up to the team and their

creativity,” said Rossetto. “I’ve seen everything, scrap wood, recycling material, milk jugs...” Rules include no power tools or pre-cut pieces and two team members take part in the course that has three legs, explained Rossetto, “first leg is rowing, second sailing and third is ‘get back if you can.’” “Most of these boats don’t even float,” she said with a chuckle. The boat building takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the race starts at 2 p.m. Participants gather at the Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre. Other festival activities on the roster include brand-spanking new Kayak Poker Run, as well as staple fixtures the Poker Seagull Outboard Race and Paper Bag Dinghy Race (where the operator’s head is covered by a bag and his/or her partner’s responsible for providing directions through the race course. The ‘Best of the Bay’ Clam Chowder contest is always popular among competing businesses and the taste testers and the centre is also organizing a $15 salmon barbecue starting at 6 p.m. “We’re really trying to put together a local plate,” said Rossetto. “We’ve sourced all the food locally, with fish from Cow Bay Seafood, greens from a local farm, bread from True Grain Bread, and dessert from Morning Mist Ice Cream Parlour.” For more information, visit classicboats.org, or call 250-746-4955.

he artistic community is known for its creativity and resourcefulness and Lake Cowichan artists, Pauline and Dave Thompson are no

exception. They wanted a venue to display and sell their work and that of other local artists, while also giving the public a chance to glimpse the artistic process in progress. The most logical solution for them was to create their own gallery in the lower half of their Lake Cowichan home. “We did everything. Started from bare cement,” said Pauline Thompson. “We dry-walled, plumbed, wired and did all the finishing. We did it all.” The finished product, called simply “The Studio — By Us” is a combination of gallery space, meeting area

and working studio. It has plenty of large windows affording natural light and tranquil views of their spacious gardens. The venue was actually completed in 2008, but after a month of heavy rains in November 2009 caused extensive flooding, the studio had to be renovated to repair major water damage. The finished studio and gallery at 226 Grants Lake Rd. had its grand opening June 15 and is open Thursdays through Mondays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. “We have space to showcase all of our work as well as the three other artists involved,” said Pauline. Dave is well-known for his awardwinning wooden intarsia pieces as well as his paintings. He paints in a variety of mediums including oil, acrylic, water colour and egg tempera. more on A12

Pauline specializes in glass etching and etching, calligraphy, Ukranian easter eggs and has recently added book making to her roster. The gallery will also house the works of Lake Cowichan artists Trudy Kungold Ammann, Loretta Puckrin and Karola Shabernak. “Karola will have her jewellery, Loretta has her many different forms of art and Trudy will have her printmaking, calligraphy and cast paper work,” said Pauline. South African-born Dave and his English wife originally met in Toronto and spent many years living in northern Labrador where Dave was employed as a heavy duty mechanic. Dave’s artistic career began by accident. “I was bored and Pauline told me to go down and do some painting in the basement, so I painted a couple of pieces on plain old writing paper using enamel house paint,” said Dave. “She wanted me to paint the basement of course!” Dave pestered Pauline to “chuck those things in the garbage” and was relieved to come home one day and find them nowhere in sight. “I asked her if she’d finally chucked them and she said no, I framed them and sold them for $10 apiece!” So began a career in art that has lasted his whole life. The couple moved to the island in the 1970’s. In the 90’s, Dave saw a book showcasing intarsia, a method that entails constructing pictures from carefully cut pieces of wood of differing grains and colours. With no background in woodworking, he began creating amazing pieces in the medium. Not quite satisfied with the process, he began creating threedimensional intarsia, carving the usually flat pieces into various animals, birds and scenes resulting in an eye-popping new variation on the medium. For a time, as well he also built kayaks and offered courses to the public. “We did a course where you could build your own “stitch and glue” wooden kayak,” said Dave. “In eight weeks, you’d be able to take home a kayak that you’d built yourself.” Pauline’s journey into the world of art began more recently after she joined the Kaatza Art Group. “It’s just been the last three years or so that I’ve really gotten into it,” she said. The group uses the studio for functions as well as holding monthly meetings. The Thompsons are hopeful the studio will prove popular with locals and visitors to the area alike. Camille Miller brings some Odd support to Crofton

Camille Miller is no stranger to the road. The Nanaimo-based singer was born in Germany, raised in military bases across Canada and has toured across two continents. This weekend, her journey leads her to Crofton, where she will be crowd fundraising to record a new CD — her sixth — along with Lance Lapointe and members of

the Odds. “Camille grew up on Motown, Carly Simon, The Carpenters, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and the Rolling Stones,” event promo material states. The organizer of Cowichan’s fourth-annual Rock of the Woods (ROTW) is pretty pumped the festival’s nailed down a five-year location lease with Godfrey-Brownell Vineyard in Glenora. It’s going to be the festival’s most rocking location, Bain said last week of the three-day event, which kicks off Friday and is gaining a huge following. “We’ve been working closely together with Dave Godfrey and he’s been unbelievably supportive,” Bain said. “Last year it was a dusty path, this year it’s not a dusty path, and there’s grass and green grass, so that’s definitely a perk.” Shawnigan-raised rocker Jon Middleton’s on the same wave-length as Bain stoked about the location. “We’ve been kind of establishing a musical relationship for more than four years now,” said Middleton of mellow Victoria act Jon and Roy. “He had me play solo last year. We talked about having the band play a couple times, but it just didn’t work out, we were gone touring.” This year’s draws include Seattlebased indie-folkies the Cave Singers, San Francisco psychedelic soulsters Monophonics, Vancouver-based Hannah Georgas, as well as Vancouver Island boys Jon and Roy. Bain’s organized the festival roster with different vibes each day to match the bands, including

Friday’s more up-beat, get musicgoers-dancing rockers including the Monophonics. “It’s been my pipe dream for awhile and it took me about 15 emails to get them,” Bain explained of the group, that has nine members with all kinds of instruments packed for Cowichan. “My music tastes have changed a lot and I think the Monophonics are going to blow everyone away. They’ve blown me away. “Their stage energy is amazing. They’re in the top five favourite shows I’ve ever seen.” Also playing Friday are Flipout, The New Souls, Shrew, Cobble Swell, Man Made Lake, The Royal Canadians, and Jesse Manason. Saturday’s lineup will keep spirits and energy lifting with a more indiefolk mix, including the Cave Singers, Mat the Alien, Fly Moon Royalty, Sunhawk, Deep Sea Gypsies, Juice, High Noon to Midnight, Woodsmen, Kendall Patrick and the Headless Bettys, Bestie, Sound and Science, and the Wild Romantics. Sunday’s scheduled to be a more mellow day, with festival-goers switching gears after having partied the two nights before. The final day’s bands include Jon and Roy, Hannah Georgas, Acres of Lions, Michael Bernard Fitzgerald, The Grass Tracks, Johnny Galactic, and The Barefoot Thieves. And for folks who get a second wind, there’s DJ Hayz. “It’s coming together really well, the smoothest ever, actually,” Bain said of all the pieces, including a volleyball court, beverage garden, DJ lounge, wine tours, local food

This year he also introduced a VIP package with wine tasting and tours and intimate acoustic performances by festival headliners in Godfrey Brownell’s half-underground wine cellar up for grabs. “We thought how can we show off what he’s doing as well,” Bain said of Godfrey’s winery. “And why don’t we see if I can get headliners to do acoustic versions of two to three songs each.” “The biggest thing we’re still trying to do is build that community. We’ve

been successful with that, but we still want to see it grow,” added Bain of the festival in general. “It’s about being able to have fun on the property and be positive at the same time.” Middleton’s on the same page. “It definitely depends on people supporting it, and last year it was really successful and the support was there,” he said. The Frances Kelsey School alumni sees a bright future for ROTW. “It’s a great festival, and it was really well-run. And it’s really about the area, and just how it’s so picturesque.”

After taking last year off, the ninth family affair resumes at Cowichan River Bible Campgrounds Saturday, starting at 4 p.m. “There’s something for every age,” said spokesman Ivan Schulz, touting kids’ inflatables, concessions and more Alive attractions that lured some 1,200 fans in 2011. “It’s not over-churched. There’s a short message for five to 10 minutes, but it’s geared to a welcoming atmosphere for everyone.” That greeting will be made by a chorus of Christian acts including two-time Grammy nominee rapper Fresh IE., Portland worship group NeverClaim, and bluegrass folk favourites Step 12. Host band Friday’s Cry will also usher rockers Bondless, solo musician Jon Neufeld (of Starfield), plus Victoria’s flock of Solomon Island fire dancers sparking a unique artistic light for Alive. “You go from a day to a night festival,” Schultz noted of the shade-splashed bash.

Annual Davey ready to reel ‘em in again

t’s the prizes that hook participants. But it’s the camaraderie, the cause and the benefits to local charities that really reels them in year, after year. That’s the thinking of long-time participants and organizers of the annual Davey Derby fishing event, which sees hundreds of local anglers casting from Port Renfrew for big prizes, with big money raised and funneled to local charities. The 13th-annual Dave Nicholson Memorial Fundraiser takes place from July 26 to 28 with $16,000 (and growing as days pass) worth of prizes, boasted organizer Audie Williams. “It gets better ever year,” said Williams, mentioning the sought-out top prize is always some kind of kicker. This year’s gem is a 9.9-horsepower Yamaha four-stroke with remote and power trim worth $4,200. Brian Dice took top spot in last year’s edition snagging the grand prize kicker after conquering a 38.3-pound spring salmon. “A few years ago we really established ourselves and sponsorship jumped up and has been great since,” said Williams, hoping for 400 entries over the weekend. “We’ve been recognized as one of the biggest derbies on the West Coast, one that’s strictly charity-based.” Proceeds from D13 will be spread among a number of local charities. Past funds have gone to groups including Chemainus Harvest House, Cowichan Valley Basket Society, Cowichan District Hospital Foundation, Kidsport Cowichan, and the Cowichan Lake Salmonid Enhancement Society. Also, organizers frequently help a number of locals who’ve lost a battle to, or are currently fighting against, a disease.

These include Matt Lennox, Rob Darwin and Raymond Degraaf. The Davey Derby started with employees of the Catalyst Paper, Crofton Division and friends of the deceased Dave Nicholson. “Dave instilled and possessed many positive values in people that he met and worked with. Whether it was buying raffle tickets from someone whose child was fundraising for a field trip, sports team, or donating money to help out a workmate or member of the community who was dealing with a financial hardship, Dave was the guy that always led the charge,” states the derby’s website. One of the main draws for fishing junkies is the prize pool, which wouldn’t be up for grabs if it weren’t for sponsors, explained Williams. “We’ve got one-of-a kind prizes, made especially for the derby,” he said, noting an Ace Line Hauler prawn trap puller with the DD logo laser edged on it, as one of this year’s examples. There’s also an eight-foot inflatable boat with a propane 2.5-hp Lehr outboard motor as well as a Jackson Lux barbecue grill looking for new homes. Coming back July 27 after last year’s debut is the kid’s bullhead derby. “It’s free and all the kids get a prize,” said Williams. “It’s really neat to see the children get involved; it’s the next generation. We’re really planting the seed here with this.” And for the adult anglers, he’s heard whispers fishing’s been good. “The timing of the derby is usually when the big springs are coming through,” he said last week. “I was out in Port Renfrew last weekend and out on the dock and the guys had big fish there.” Organizers have also booked comedian Kenny Shaw to perform Saturday, July 27 at 7 p.m. at the marina. Advance entry into the derby is $50 per rod and

artin Middleton and Leo Gillespie are all geared up for their one-day blitz of the 75-kilometre West

Coast Trail. The dynamic duo once did the entire trail in just under 24 hours and are gunning for an even quicker time as 36-year-olds in their fundraising venture for the Cowichan Valley Basket Society. The charity was a favourite of Gillespie’s dad Peter, who died last July 27. Their trail trek this Saturday will coincide with the one-year anniversary of his death. “The run is quickly approaching and we are training hard,’’ noted Middleton in a recent email. “We are hoping to crack the 20-hour mark still, but mostly it will be good to do this event over a decade later together with no injuries and to remember Leo’s father. We are going to laminate

some pictures of him and have them on the back of each of our backpacks so his face is there the whole time.’’ Middleton was at Nitinat Narrows in his little boat recently to show the person who is going to shuttle them across the Narrows at first light. The trekkers had also planned to direct some of their fundraising to Curt Knippelberg, who required money for a brain operation. But he has since had the operation early and managed to cover the costs through his own fundraising and with help from family and friends. “Curt is offering to donate his half of the money raised to the food bank as well,’’ noted Middleton. “This is actually OK because I have seen the recent articles about the food bank being in dire need of resources, food and money. “So we are still fundraising, it’s just now all the money will go to the Cowichan Valley Basket Society, as Curt wants to donate his half. Demi Rose There’s always a cloud of dust around when the valley’s Demi Rose is playing ball. That’s why they call her Pigpen. “I always like to slide and get dirty,’’ said the Victoria Devils ‘98 fastball club’s main pitcher. Rose, who turns 15 on Aug. 7, mixes up her pitches nicely, throwing fastballs, change-ups, a rise ball and drop ball. “It’s been good,’’ Rose said. “I practice a lot with pitching coach Rob Guenter. He’s also the Team Canada national coach. It’s good to have him helping.’’ She also likes the make-up of the coaching staff that features Patrick Kennedy along with Mark and Bria Wilson. Bria owns the Strike Zone in Esquimalt where Rose can get extra time working on her skills. Rose and her teammates are about to head into the provincial bantam playoffs in Victoria. “We’re like a first-year team so we’re not going to be up there, I don’t think, but next year for sure will be better,’’ said Rose. “We went to about four or five tournaments and we’ve only placed at one.’’ Long-term goals are set in her mind. “For me to go play college ball or something would be really fun or the national team,’’ she said.

ow important is the name of your community? If you ask the folks with an address in Disappointment, Kentucky or Looneyville, Texas, you’d probably hear that it is pretty important, indeed. North Cowichan is currently undergoing a process to re-brand a slew of diverse neighbourhoods and distinct areas with one all-encompassing moniker, University Village. If you get a clear picture from the name of what kind of community University Village will be, then please pass your insights my way. It sounds like a smart town that could end up with a major identity crisis. For those of you unfamiliar with the University Village concept, here it is in a nutshell. In 2011 the municipality identified in its Official Community Plan three areas to focus

growth and densification. The one labeled University Village is roughly bounded by Somenos Marsh to the north, Lakes Road to the east, Coronation Street to the south and Jubilee Street and Vista Avenue to the west. Included in this study area are things like Cowichan Sportsplex, the arena, pool, library and theatre, agricultural land, sensitive marsh ecosystem, schools, two fire halls, senior housing, the homeless shelter, various neighbourhoods of differing degrees of socio-economic scales and, of course, Vancouver Island University. Add to this mix the division of the space by two significant transportation corridors — the railroad and the Trans-Canada Highway — and it becomes obvious there are some distinct needs to be met and obstacles to overcome to make this a unified district. Last month I attended a meeting of stakeholders to start brainstorming some of these issues and visioning what an ideal community could look like. With both Duncan and North Cowichan

The looming departure of doctors from Lake Cowichan is symptomatic of a provincial issue for small communities. People want to access basic health services close to home, but, instead are being forced to drive long distances. The idea of a community health centre, where teams of health professionals can rotate into small communities is an idea that is overdue. Hopefully, we can create a template for the province.

lands included in the study area, it is very apparent the process will have to put collaboration ahead of self-interest. The key will be developing common goals with the entire community in mind. For me, the main issues that stand out are the flow of people, the impact of development on the environment, access to services, and protecting the heritage that is quickly being lost. I believe there is huge opportunity to make this area more bike, scooter and foot-friendly, and realize all the health and environmental benefits that come along with active transportation. And I believe this is also the chance to protect Somenos Marsh once and for all, and put a stop to development encroaching on the land. There are numerous opportunities for tweaking already developed lands within the area, instead of adding more pavement to the already abundant asphalt-scape. Currently I live in a residential neighbourhood identified in Duncan’s OCP as a

commercial zone and am familiar with the pinches and pokes, the tweaks and the tickles that come with transition. Because of this, I’m going to make sure the consultants know what I feel is important. And I think you should do the same. If this University Village is to be a success, realize its full potential and avoid the possible pains involved with change, everyone needs to be involved in creating this local area plan. North Cowichan has set up a virtual discussion board at PlaceSpeak that can be accessed from a link at northcowichan.ca. How much money was wasted in phony Kerry Park consultation?

Dear editor Finally we are getting editorials that say it like it is. The Kerry Park rec commission has been out of control for some time. It spends thousands on surveys, then completely ignores the results. Then it spends more on open houses to try and “sell” the discredited project instead of listening to the people and not continually pushing its own agenda. Commission chair Mike Croft is living in cuckoo land when he quotes the opinions of the attendees at the open houses. Thousands vote in a referendum and are ignored. Eleven show up at an open house and are treated as fountains of wisdom and spokespersons for the whole community. George Orwell would enjoy the irony. It would be informative to have the cost analysis for all the surveys, open houses and hired guns since the Kerry Park fiasco commenced. David Hewson

Garbage burn symptom of our poor waste programs

Dear editor The burning of garbage on Cowichan Tribes land is only a symptom of a much larger problem: the lack of a comprehensive garbage and recycling program for all residents of the Cowichan Valley. The various pick-up services, together with Bing’s Creek and Peerless Road and the privately run Return-It centres and Bottle Depots, do not provide a place for all the material that residents and businesses need to get rid of. We need two or three full-service centres that will take all refuse of whatever kind, without exception. For municipal or regional authorities to say, “Well, you can dispose of this but not that,” leaves residents with the impossible problem of disposing of all those items that fall in the grey areas or are forbidden altogether. Constantly changing rules and regulations, some originating with higher levels of government, complicate the situation even further. Burning is not an option, so what is one to do? While it is entirely appropriate for commercial enterprises to be charged for the services they require, it is not acceptable for

Dear editor Let me clarify my critical online comments to the headline garbage burning story on Cowichan Tribes lands. The burning issue is one that we all agree should be investigated and subject to enforcement to the extent that the law allows. No one should have to put up with that nonsense. The Cowichan Tribes local government in this circumstance has the clout it needs to begin an investigation and affect change for the better. It was the inconsistent messages from Tribes government regarding the environment that was the intended target of my initial criticism. My position on the Stoney Hill Road issue is clear and for those who have followed it, beyond comments in the newspaper, know the reasons why I support the bylaw to establish the so-called “petitioners route.” My reasons are not my ideas, but come as a result of process lasting countless hours

I remain confident we can work through the relative sensitive issues that come about with road building to ensure important areas of interest remain intact. Moving forward with respect to local government relations with Cowichan Tribes, there is work to do. We need to work together on economic development initiatives, create opportunity and jobs for everyone in the region. That is why over a year ago I met with then-B.C. Minister of Aboriginal Affairs Mary Polak to find non-treaty tools and levers such as the Economic and Community Development and Strategic Engagement Agreements designed to strengthen working relations while avoiding greater unresolved issues that remain between Tribes and seniors levels of government. t’s a stunning claim and revelation by CVRD Director Ian Morrison that he was shocked to figure out the level of irresponsible pay increases to CVRD staff in the past few years. During his time on the CVRD Mr. Morrison himself has collected about $100,000 in pay and expenses from taxpayers supposedly to pay attention and protect our interests. Yet he and most of his fellow directors have clearly been asleep at the board table on these huge raises they approved. Many taxpayers including myself have been raising alarm bells about excessive pay to CVRD staff for years while this board dutifully gave out huge pay increases year after year to already well-paid bureaucrats. Twenty-five of them now get more than $100,000 per year plus a very generous pension and other benefits package. Many have had increases ranging from 15% to 38% since 2008 and more on the way this year. This spring Mr. Morrison again voted along with his colleagues for another big pay increase to staff when inflation is close to zero and the local economy is still struggling from the world recession. Other governments pay close attention to pay raises for their staff because they are a primary driver of taxes and we have witnessed both senior governments trying to control employee pay, but not the CVRD! Is it really necessary to pay ice arena managers or the Cowichan Theatre manager or the guy who runs a mostly empty transit system more than $100,000, plus benefits? All of these functions are monopolies and are heavily subsidized by taxpayers. The worst thing is that this CVRD board and its $200,000-a-year chief bureaucrat have never established measureable performance requirements for senior staff so they are never held accountable or have to meet any meaningful targets in order to get these fat raises. Virtually every other organization including most companies, the provincial and federal government require their staff to meet performance targets but not the CVRD! It is no surprise that the board chairman and CVRD staff response to Mr. Morrison’s call for an audit by the Municipal Auditor General on out-of-control CVRD pay increases was to have a secret board meeting and then plan for another one before month-end. Issues like staff salaries which are clearly of strong interest to the public are always discussed behind closed doors in the CVRD. Staff will undoubtedly table some more nonsense claiming the CVRD is simply keeping up with other local governments. In the propaganda info from the CVRD chairman with our 2013 tax bill last month, there is not one mention of the $500,000-plus going into new raises for staff or that CVRD pay and employee benefits for its more than 220 employees are now the largest single tax item. HYDE, Margaret October 13, 1944 ~ July 15, 2013 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret (Peggy) Hyde (Briers) on July 15, 2013. Peggy passed peacefully into the hands of the lord, surrounded by her family and the loving company of caring friends at her home, after a determined and courageous battle with cancer. Peggy will be forever lovingly remembered and missed by her husband of 49 years, Terence; her children David (Mary), Michael (Clara) and Alexandra; grandchildren Kevin, Nicholas, Joey, (Donna), (Craig) and (Cailee); greatgranddaughter (Olivia); brother Frank; sisters Stephanie, Hazel and Mary. She will also be greatly missed by her loyal canine companions, Max, Chloe and (Charlie). Born in Christchurch, England, Peggy immigrated to Edmonton, Canada with her husband Terence in January 1968 as an adventurous young bride and mother. In 1969, Peggy and Terry moved to Victoria, BC and made Vancouver Island their home. In addition to being a well known and respected business owner in the community, Peggy enjoyed her quiet time quilting, cake decorating, gardening, dressmaking and above all, being a loyal and devoted wife, Mum and grandmother “Grammy”. Today, as we mourn the passing of a wonderful person, we welcome, the freedom of her spirit, we celebrate, her meeting with the lord, we cherish, the memory of our time with her, we remember, the love of a wife, mother and friend The Hyde family and friends would like to express our sincerest appreciation and gratitude to the VIHA Nursing staff ,home care attendants and the Doctors, Nurses and auxiliary staff at Cowichan District Hospital for the kindness, care and compassion extended to Peggy during her illness. We also would like to express our deepest gratitude and love to our private care worker Nikki, for the many hours of extraordinary care, compassion, love and affection extended to Peggy. Nikki has become a part of our family and will remain a treasured friend. A celebration of Peggy’s life will be held at Pine Lodge Farm, 3191 Mutter Road in Mill Bay on Sunday July 28, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. At Peggy’s request, vibrant colour is the fashion for the service. It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Jean Woodford in Duncan, B.C. Jean was born to Ethel and Josef Doerflinger in Armstrong B.C. She lived in the interior of B.C. until she moved to Duncan in 1970 to take up a teaching position in the Cowichan School District. Jean enjoyed many activities including travelling, swimming, folk dancing and gardening. Her appreciation of the arts was varied. She loved opera, jazz, the symphony, dance and theatre. She volunteered her time to support organizations such as the Canadian Cancer Society, the Cowichan Historical Society and the Cowichan Music Festival. Jean will be dearly missed by her loving family and friends. The family would like to thank the staff of the Cowichan District Hospital for their compassionate care and support. A celebration of Jean’s life will be held on Saturday, July 27th at 11:00 am in Sand’s Funeral Chapel, 187 Trunk Road, Duncan B.C. A tea will follow in the Reception Centre. FALT, GEORGINA (nee Ricketts)

February 18, 1926- July 19, 2013 With sorrowful hearts, we announce the sudden peaceful passing of our beloved Georgina at the Chemainus Health Care Centre, with her loving family by her side. Georgina was predeceased by her daughter Sharon Thomas in 2013 and great grandson Mikey Young in 2004. She is survived by her devoted husband of 67 years, Albin Falt; brother Edward Ricketts (Myrna); brother-in-law George Falt (Betty); son Bernie Falt; daughter Camille Wright (Rich Rogers), daughter Theresa Bodger (Don); grandchildren Deanna Schmidt (Ron), Gina Young (Shawn), Shauna Thomas (Mike Vipond) and Derek Wright (Diana); and great grandchildren Andrea La, Danielle Schmidt and Kadeyn and Trinity Vipond. Georgina was born in Sidney, B.C., the second youngest of eight children to Fred & Ethel Ricketts. The family moved to Esquimalt where she attended Lampson Street School and Esquimalt High. She met Albin Falt in 1941 and, due to the Second World War, delayed their marriage until May 10, 1946 at Esquimalt Naval Garrison, St. Paul’s Church. Georgina worked at Small’s Bakery in Victoria and, during wartime, she was employed at Boeing airplane plants in Victoria and Vancouver. After the war ended, she went to work at Standard Furniture in Victoria. After Georgina and Albin eventually moved to Cowichan Bay, she worked at Wilson Motors in Duncan as a bookkeeper. Georgina then worked at their family-owned tugboat company and was the dispatcher until she retired. She spent many volunteer hours with the Cowichan Bay Fire Department’s women’s auxiliary and in the gift shop at the Cowichan District Hospital. In later years, Georgina and Albin spent summers at their log cabin on Alexis Lake in the Cariboo and made many visits to Hawaii. She never thought of herself and did not want to be a burden to others. Always an elegant lady, Georgina lived and died peacefully with dignity and grace. Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to our family doctor, Dr. Brian Bass. Special love and thanks to the Chemainus Health Care Centre activities directors, companion Pearl Chisholm and especially the nursing staff at Ocean Point for their wonderful care and attention to Georgina. A mass celebrating the life of Georgina will take place Saturday, July 27 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Edward’s Church, 2085 Maple Bay Road, Duncan, with Father Alfredo Monacelli officiating. Food and beverages will be served afterwards in the church hall downstairs.

Mr. Gary Douglas Steinhauer of Hoadley, Alberta passed away in the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton on Saturday July 13, 2013 at the age of 67 years. Predeceased by his parents Peter and Alice Steinhauer and by a sister Joan Norris, Gary is survived by his loving wife Valrie of Hoadley, three sons; Jaime (Sharleen) and family of Edmonton, Ron McLaren (Megan) and family of Calgary, Mike Rodgers (Kristi) of Calgary, and by one daughter Shelly Maher of Edmonton. Gary also leaves to mourn five grandchildren, two sisters Peggy Steinhauer of British Columbia and Susan Entner and family of British Columbia, and two brother-in-laws; Carl (Bonnie) Richardson of Hoadley and Don (Renee) Mason of Wainright, Alberta. Gary served his country with pride and honor as a member of the Canadian Military from 1962 – 1992. A Celebration of Gary’s life will be held from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #36 in Rimbey, Albert on Saturday July 27, 2013 at 1:30 pm. Paul Carmichael is a father who came up with the idea for a support device for iPads and tablets after watching his seven-year-old daughter, Sofie, struggle to use her new tablet while balancing it on her lap. He calls his invention The Kribbitt. Why? “Because it holds — it’s kind of funky and shaped like a frog,” explained Carmichael. Currently, there is a patent pending (utility and design.) If all goes well, The Kribbitt may soon be more widely distributed. Carmichael is proud it’s being carried by London Drugs stores and if sales soar, he may have to raise his daughter’s allowance. She was, after all, the one who inspired him “We bought Sofie a tablet for Christmas and I saw her on the couch during the holidays trying to use it and I realized she needed support for it. I couldn’t find what I wanted in the stores, so I went into the garage and pulled the wires off the tops of some five-gallon paint cans and fashioned my first (prototype) out of them. That’s how I got started.” When it was first launched this year, The Kribbitt got rave reviews from users and website testimonials. Carmichael said he used the catchy theme: ‘The 12 Days of Kribbitt’ and the orders started coming in. Now the devices are made from a non-latex rubber over wire and The Kribbitt is being manufactured in Carmichael’s garage. He has the help of one assistant but if and when demand exceeds supply, he may have to find a warehouse and employ a whole assembly line of people. The device is unique because it can be used in many ways. Similar holding devices on the market are more limited in function, says Carmichael. This one can be placed at various angles for easier viewing and to reduce eye and muscle strain. It holds tablets vertically or horizontally, can be held in place over the hand or on the knee, adapted to fit under kitchen cabinets or used with attachments for tripods, cameras or mic stands. Its rubber cushion protects tablets from coming directly into contact with hard surfaces. A Mill Bay resident, Carmichael turned 47 last week. Not surprisingly, his father was an inventor and businessman. The Kribbitt fits all tablets (5.5 inches and over) and iPads including iPad Mini. It comes in several “fashion” colours including neon green, pink and silver. Recently, Carmichael returned from a conference and trade show
