New festival ‘Revolver’ proposed for August 2014

Kimberley’s new festival and events consultant Kevin Shepit has been busy since he began his new position, talking to locals, brainstorming, coming up with new ideas. And it appears he has something — a new festival, or rather a brand for a festival that will incorporate a number of events. That brand is Revolver.
The Revolver series ‘revolves’ around anything that is on wheels, or even spins. “The idea was presented to myself from a client who wanted to see a bike festival happen in town,” Shepit said. “Being a part of numerous fat tire festivals across North America over the years, this concept was of great interest to see move forward, knowing the positive benefits these festivals have on communities. “We took the idea one step further to involve all demographics on wheels, and include
music and art, hence Revolver. “We have the roller derby girls, long boarding was virtually born right here. This is where Revolver comes up — anything that revolves,
you could even a DJ contest — spinning records. It’s all about the thrill of the ride.” It is not Shepit’s role to create the festival himself. His role is to bring together groups
that would be interested in guiding an event that would be part of the Revolver series. Revolver series is seeking entrepreneurial minded individuals, organizations and groups
who would like the opportunity to help Revolver happen for August 2014. Shepit would like to see it start with a bang next summer and he is looking for more ideas. “If you have an event idea you would like to bring to the table for Revolver, please do. We are keen to see your idea turn into an opportunity. “Several opportunities are already well into the draft planning stages and are seeking coordinators and leaders to execute these events. Two hikers in their early 60s, Rick Long and his friend Don Ramage both from Saskatchewan, are trekking across B.C. and they will be passing right through the Platzl in Kimberley and ending in Cranbrook after walking the Rails to Trails. To put in perspective, Rick Long and his family have been doing hiking expeditions since 2008 starting with a trek that took them across BC, from Victoria, through to Alberta. “This year we started at Kootenay Lake, the east side. So far we’ve hiked over the Grey Creek pass which is the toughest stretch on the Trans Canada Trail because you’re climbing a lot.” Grey Creek is the highest point in the whole Trans Canada Trail across Canada. At the highest point hikers are climbing straight up for six km, Long said. The hikes are family expeditions. Rick Long has been going since 2008 and this summer Don Ramage, has joined him. From the very beginning, Long’s family has been there by his side. “Each year we hike 200 to 300 km,” said Long. “My wife always comes along to help us, she’s hiked 100 km herself and our sons have hiked more.” Please see HIKER, page 4

then must find time between communicating with pilots to input the data. “This system allows the operator of the vehicle to immediately input the information digitally, which goes directly onto the internet and is accessible by pilots,” Chernove explained.
As well as being faster, the new system leaves less room for human error because there is less handling, and fewer opportunities for human error. “The Canadian Rockies International Airport is a vital economic catalyst for the Kootenay region,” said
Wayne Stetski, Mayor of Cranbrook. “The City of Cranbrook appreciates that the federal government continues to invest in airports through ACAP.” The funding was made available through the government’s Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP). Through this program, the government has given Cranbrook’s airport more than $8 million for 13 projects. “The positive for me is most of all about the continued support and successful relationship between the levels of government and the agreed-upon importance of the economic engine of the airport, the catalyst that we are,” said Chernove. “While this particular grant is not a huge sum of money, it represents the federal government – who controls these regulations – also being prepared to help us implement the regulations.”

Let’s get ready for JulyFest
Everyone is ready to enjoy the fun of JulyFest, including immigrants and newcomers to Kimberley. For the Bulletin
On July 15, Michelle Nex, coordinator of the huge Bocce tournament that is a staple of Kimberley’s JulyFest, took time out of her busy schedule to teach immigrants and newcomers how to play Bocce and Dave Clarke, JulyFest Coordinator, was on hand to describe the many events scheduled for the upcoming weekend. Although the rules and scorekeeping for Bocce are straightforward, participants learned that luck and strategy are a big part of the game. Following Michelle’s excellent description of basics of the game, the adults and children who were out on this sunny Monday morning took part in their own mini tournament. The picnic lunch which followed was enjoyed by all. Su Jin Lee, the winner of the event’s “door prize”, will be able to enjoy JulyFest from the comfort of her new lawn chair! The Welcoming
Communities: New Immigrants - New Residents Community Events and Networking Project, a joint effort of the Kimberley Library and CBAL will be hosting another event on August 12. Participants are invited to join members of the Kimberley Nature Park Society for a guided hike to the Nordic Centre. Smart meter options announced VICTORIA - Bill Bennett, Minister of Energy and Mines, announced today that BC Hydro will offer new options for customers who have put their smart meters on hold. Government is responding to public concerns by providing opt-out options with the costs borne by those customers and not subsidized by the majority, who have a standard BC Hydro smart meter. BC Hydro customers who do not currently have a smart meter will now have three choices: * Choose the standard smart meter at no cost. * Accept a digital meter with the radio off. This option will be subject to a one-time cost to modify the meter plus a monthly fee to read the meter. * Keep the old analog meter, which will be subject to a monthly fee that will include both the extra cost of reading the meter and the cost of instituting du-

Costs and fees associated with the options will be established by BC Hydro but will be reviewed by the BC Utilities Commission to ensure that BC Hydro is only recovering the cost of providing and servicing the radio-off and analog options. Modernizing the electricity grid is a critical part of BC Hydro’s plan to provide a secure and reliable power system to support the economy, new and emerging industries and communities all over the province. The replacement of obsolete mechanical meters with modern smart meters is a critical part of this transformation. “This decision finds an appropriate balance between addressing the concerns raised by people who have put their meter installation on hold, while ensuring that the majority of customers who have a standard smart meter will not be paying for those who select an opt out option,” Bennett said.
Smart meters are the end-point of the electricity grid and are part of an upgrade that will help BC Hydro improve its management of the electricity system. They also lower costs, reduce theft, encourage conservation, and can automatically detect outages. Over 20 years, the program will pay for itself and will help keep rates affordable, which is a priority for government. “As we have said, nobody will be forced to take a smart meter. I believe that this is a fair and reasonable solution for all British Columbians,” said BC Hydro CEO, Charles Reid. “Smart meters are now part of our standard operating equipment, just like utility poles and wires. “We have been engaging with customers throughout the province about smart meters over the past two years and we believe this solution is a reasonable compromise.”
A month ago, on June 13, I went to my appointment with Dr. Darcie Pawlick, ND, and she went over my main health problem with me – allergies. For those of you who missed the last article, I’ll recap. Whether the Kimberley Dynamiters will continue to operate as a part of the Western International Hockey League next winter or whether they’ll quietly fold up and die will be decided at a special meeting of the League executive on Sunday at Nelson. Dr. Joe Vingo, president of the W.I.H.L., called the special meeting Tuesday at about the same time E. A. Mann was advising Dynamiter officers that Nelson “could not see its way” to subsidizing Dynamiters this year. It’s all a matter of dollars and cents. Dynamiters did the closest budgeting of any team in the League last year but ended up some $1800 in the hole. They can’t continue unless means are found of providing them with subsidy in the way of extra games and this, Nelson appears unwilling to do. One reason is Kimberley’s distance from other teams in the League, all of which enjoyed a great many more games, and, incidentally gate receipts, than did Kimberley. Nelson and Trail, for example are able to play additional “subway” games while Spokane got in more extra games than any other club. But Kimberley had to get along with the regular schedule and just can’t make ends meet that way. Lyle Swaney, newly elected president of the Dynamiters, says it’s a matter of whether the other clubs want to keep the league intact or not
and that Sunday’s meeting will be a crucial one.
50TH ANNIVERSARY FOR PIONEER COUPLE
Residents of Kimberley since 1925, Mr. and Mrs. P.J. McKim, Wallinger Avenue, Celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 12. To mark the occasion 24 members of the family met on July 11 for a family dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred McKim, Johnson Street, son and daughter-in-law of the honoured guests. Also present were their elder son, Phillip and his wife and children of Marysville; their daughter, Miss E. McKim of Pitt meadows; Mr. and Mrs. Larry Kahler of Victoria and miss Marlene Stone of Revelstoke, granddaughters of Mr. and Mrs. McKim; eight other grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mr. and Mrs. McKim were married in the Wesleyan Chapel, Liverpool, England, on July 12, 1904. In 1909 Mr. McKim came to Cobalt, Ontario, Mrs. McKim and family joining him the following year. Shortly after they moved to Tessier, Sask., and after farming there some years, homesteaded for 14 years in Southern Alberta. In Jan., 1925, they moved to Kimberley, where Mr. McKim was employed by the C.M. & S. Co. until his retirement. During their years in Kimberley both Mr. and Mrs. McKim have taken an active part in the Knights of Pythias and Pythian Sisters, Mr. McKim being a Past Grand Chancellor of the Lodge. In addition Mr. McKim served for many years on the School Board. Kimberley’s High School is named in his honour.

Hiker following Trans Canada Trail From page 1 Due to the fact that the hikers only had a week for this summer’s expedition, they will be ending their trek in Cranbrook. But just because it’s shorter than they have done in the past, it’s no cake walk. “Because the trail goes through some really remote areas, sometimes you have to walk for very long periods of times before getting a break. For example, yesterday when we were going over the Grey Creek pass, we had to climb up over 3000 feet to get across it, six km straight up, and we had to hike to a point where we could camp – so it was 35 km.” “The Trans Canada Trail has never met a mountain it doesn’t like to go over. It could go around it, but no it goes over it.” But Long said that the heat has been the most challenging obstacle for the hikers – hitting about 39 degrees. “We like to hike in July because in B.C. it rains like mad in June, it’s nice in July and then in August everything is on fire.” The hikers have narrowly avoided for- Rain or shine, Rick Long is making his est fires when they have hiked in August of way across B.C. past years. Once they saw a forest fire across the Christina Lake where they were Long said. The bear kept getting closer, every five hiking. Not only that, but the hikers have had minutes or so the hikers heard other ruseven closer encounters with wildlife – like tling of the bear eating berries again. “Later on he was about 10 feet away the time they had lunch with a bear. “My son and I were sitting there and we and so we said ‘Bear, we’re human beings are having our lunch when all of the sud- and there are five of us!’. Well there were den there was rustling about 30 feet away only two of us but the bear didn’t need to and it turns out it’s a bear having its lunch,” know that. We decided it was time to finish
out lunch and carry on before we became lunch.” They had another close encounter with a cow moose and her calf. At first they thought they were dealing with another bear. But it was just the moose trying to scare them away by acting like a bear – making the noises and movements so that Long and his son would back away. “Woaw, I said. ‘That sounds like a bear all right’. Bears don’t really roar, they grunt and they snort. The bushes were moving like mad and we couldn’t see what was in there.” “We were trying to decide out to get by and how to get out of there when all of the sudden breaks on to the trail a cow Moose and her calf.” Long said that the trail is his way of enjoying Canada – seeing B.C. one step at a time. As well, he has a goal of completing all the seven mountain ranges on the B.C. area of the Trans Canada trail. So far he has hiked six – all he has left is the Rocky Mountain range. “I love the variety. It goes through remote areas but it also goes through towns and it goes through villages. It goes right through the centre of Kimberley. You get a huge variety of Canada.” The hikers are expecting to reach Kimberley on Friday, stopping briefly in the Platzl and then taking the Rails to Trails to Cranbrook.
Hunting permits to go online

Hunters will soon be able to apply for a hunting license online. The B.C. Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations announced last week that it has begun work on creating an online service, expected to be in place for the 2015 to 2016 hunting season. “The new electronic licensing system is a fundamental step forward in improving access to hunting and will help support sustainable wildlife populations by creating a reliable system to collect hunt-
er participation and harvest information,” said Bill Bosch, president of the B.C. Wildlife Federation. In the 2012 to 2013 hunting season, more than 100,000 hunting licenses were issued in B.C., in part due to B.C.’s Resident Hunter Recruitment and Retention strategy. Hunting brings $9.2 million in licensing revenues to the B.C. government and brings in $500 to $700 million in economic activity. The new online licensing service will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week so hunters can easily purchase a license or apply for Limited Entry Hunting opportunities. At the moment, licenses and applications can only be purchased at a Service B.C. office or a licensed vendor, and most are only open during regular business hours.

What’s more, the electronic system will create a single point of reference for data collection, including compulsory inspection information, guide outfitter hunter reports and resident hunter harvest information, all of which will help the government make timely and more informed wildlife management decisions. “The new electronic licensing program will make it easier than ever for British Columbians to go hunting and will help ensure sound wildlife management decisions support the ministry’s conservation goals,” said Steve Thomson, Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. Fairmont couple on Amazing Race Canada Ste ve Hubrecht Columbia Valley Pioneer
A valley couple is part of Canada’s first-ever Amazing Race. The American television show features teams of two people following clues and solving puzzles as they race around the world. A Canadian version of the show was launched this year and will feature Fairmont Hot Springs couple Kristen Idiens and Darren Trapp. “I’m pretty sure my heart stopped beating when I found out we’d made the show,” said Idiens. “It was my fault we applied; I pushed for it. I love every bit of being in challenging situations and seeing how I excel or fail.” They are both avid nature enthusiasts with an interest in sustainable living and a belief in positive thinking who love being physically fit and active outdoors. Trapp, 26, works as a whitewater rafting guide and lifeguard, and Idiens, 32, is a Jill-of-alltrades nature guide, teacher and yoga instructor. They plan to win the race by using their high fitness level, logic, resourcefulness and by maintaining a positive attitude through each challenge. The couple met at a bonfire in Fairmont several summers ago. Shortly after, they were working together under difficult circum-

stances when they both volunteered in Cameroon, Africa in a remote, rural area helping a women’s empowerment group. The experience, and others like it (both Trapp and Idiens have visited or worked in several different countries and done several different jobs), make good training for something like the Amazing Race, according to Idiens.
“Cameroon was a good test for us. We were constantly faced with language barriers and other obstacles. We learned about being okay with challenge and about dealing with the unknown,” she said. “We got good at being well-prepared.” The couple also thinks living in the Columbia Valley may help give them a leg up on the other teams in the show.
“We’re always out rock climbing, hiking, playing in nature. We’re always walking up all these hills, which keeps us in great shape, so the valley is the perfect place to be in terms of getting ready for this kind of race,” Idiens said. The race won’t necessarily be totally smooth sailing — their differences (Trapp is a detail-oriented perfectionist while Idiens prefers to fly along at a fast pace) could make for an unbeatable combination of skills, but may also be the couple’s downfall. “He picks up on the small things that I miss because I’m already up and running in the opposite direction,” said Idiens. “It works out well when we’re getting along, but it’s definitely a problem when we’re butting heads. It creates tension, it creates arguments, and it creates stress in our relationship.” Trapp and Idiens will be up against eight other teams in the race, including Canadian fitness
icons Hal Johnson and Joanne McLeod from participACTION’s Body Break television segments. All of them will be after the grand prize, which includes $250,000 cash, free flying for a year (up to 10 first-class trips for two) anywhere Air Canada goes, and two 2014 Corvettes. The competition will be strong, since each team brings different strengths to the show, said Idiens. If Trapp and Idiens win, they plan to use the money to purchase land and build a sustainable, eco-friendly community — complete with homes, a school and retreats — somewhere in the valley. “We really want to show people you can live comfortably, even luxuriously, and still live in an ecologically friendly way,” said Idiens. The first episode of the show aired Monday, July 15 on CTV.
Kaity Brown follows Roots to Health From page 3 I’ll have to be honest and say that I wasn’t completely diligent in this health-improving endeavour. But I did incorporate most of the aspects every day, varying which aspects from day to day. I recorded my results of what I ate, what ingredients I incorporated and how I felt for 30 days. The four main areas I will discuss are challenges, easy incorporations, noticeable changes and areas that haven’t changed. I’ll start out with the challenges that my new health regime proved. I came across three main challenges when following Dr. Pawlicks prescriptions. The first and most challenging aspect for me, and the one I did the least successfully, was the order to start eating breakfast. I have always had problems eating breakfast (yes
I’m one of those people.) Dr. Pawlick recommended I try smoothies and I soon discovered that I really can’t stand them. I was diligent in the first week of the month but then I stopped having breakfast altogether because of the lack of time in the morning and also because I just couldn’t do it. Yikes! The second challenge I faced was remembering to take my pills, which for a 20-year-old is probably not a reassuring thing to hear. Because the pills were to be taken at different times in the day, I would take some and forget the others. I nipped that in the bud by taking all the pills at once (but don’t take after that example). The last challenge was the portability of the diet. I was trying to think of ways to bring the ingredients with me to work, like putting the
apple cider vinegar and flax seeds on a salad. But overall, it was hard to bring the ingredients with me when I went out. Although it looks like Dr. Pawlick gave me more to bite off than I could chew, in reality there were a lot of elements that were easy to incorporate. For example, just drinking more water and drinking lots of tea throughout the day, adding turmeric to my food like soups and rice and making myself healthier lunches. Throughout this month, of tweaking my regular gluten-free diet I have noticed some significant improvements and areas that haven’t improved yet. I fought my allergies hard and they definitely fought back. They sucker-punched me a couple of times - I got severe itchy throat when I had hemp hearts one day, and se-
vere nausea with Nettle tea. But later on, I didn’t have a problem with those ingredients, as I shouldn’t. I have still been experiencing stomach problems like painful cramps and nausea, as well as some headaches. These symptoms occurred often throughout the month. However, I have noticed one major improvement. The biggest change was that I was able to eat raw snap peas, something I haven’t had in a very long time, and did not experience severe itchy throat and ears. In fact, I didn’t have any itchiness at all! Despite the occasional lingering stomach aches, etc, I will continue to incorporate these ingredients daily into my diet because I can see that they are teaching my rebellious immune system a lesson.

Polygamy law must be addressed

t’s been a generation since the first alarms went up about child abuse and an archaic Mormon polygamy commune in southeastern B.C. Think about that, a generation: That’s a Biblical time period. It has been nearly two years since thenB.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert Bauman upheld the anti-polygamy law in a 335-page ruling saying polygamy was “inevitably associated with serious harms.” Clearly, as they say in those religious texts, the wind scattered his words. Since being told 18 months ago to mount up and go get ‘em, the posse and special prosecutor appointed after the ruling are moving with little alacrity. Vancouver lawyer Peter Wilson said this week he’s months away from figuring out whether he can bring charges against Canada’s proudest polygamists. Imagine, months to figure out whether some incidents dating back to the 1980s and a sordid situation that continues today are criminal. When the governmentappointed expert concluded last year there was a culture of delay plaguing the legal system, he wasn’t kidding. It has been more than 20 years since attorneys general and the Criminal Justice Branch began dithering over reports of child brides and widespread abuse at Bountiful.
Initially, Crown lawyers insisted that the criminal code sections were likely unconstitutional so they didn’t lay charges. Later they maintained they didn’t think there was a substantial likelihood of conviction, or it wasn’t in the public interest. When Winston Blackmore and James Oler, rival sect leaders, were finally indicted in 2009 the charges were thrown out because of the way the case has been handled over the years by the Attorney General’s office. Blackmore, though, has long admitted to having multiple wives and to having wed a 15-year-old in some kind of service. If Wilson does lay charges, there is little doubt not only will he face a constitutional challenge over the law, but also motions to stay because the charge approval process was perverted by prosecutor shopping and politics. I said at the time Bauman’s ruling was more rhetoric than good law and I still think that’s why Wilson isn’t rushing into court. The arrival of the Mormons in Canada in the 1880s triggered the passage of the polygamy and bigamy laws, backed by well-publicized threats of rigorous enforcement. The strident Christian ethos of the country was the major force behind the legislation back then and a modern law would be much differently worded, especially in light of recent rulings on marriage and sex. That’s why this law doesn’t and won’t

pass the constitutional smell test. Even Justice Bauman acknowledged it violated religious freedom “in a manner that is non-trivial and not insubstantial,” but he excused it because of the pernicious effects of polygamy on women, children and society. In his view, there is no “good polygamy.” Yet, here we are, an entire generation of children has grown up since the first complaints were made about the warped social relationships in Bountiful. My colleague Daphne Bramham has long crusaded for justice on this question. Even if Wilson lays charges, in this province it will take at least another year before they get to trial. Meanwhile, the deleterious situation identified more than two decades ago persists. Here we are - millions spent on police investigations and legal proceedings, still spinning our wheels while one generation after another grows up damaged in a polygamous community. This law is seriously flawed and should be replaced and that’s something federal politicians need to address sooner rather than later. But don’t hold your breath. Unless Wilson throws in the towel, they’ve got a perfect excuse - it’s under investigation and before the courts. It has been, remember, for a generation. Digging deeper on a river adventure

ecently my daughter and I took a white-water kayak session. We learned about the various strokes needed to propel the kayak and more importantly how to roll the kayak in case of emergency. Not being inclined to put my face under water I was apprehensive but the instructor was exceptionally patient with my concerns and walked me through the steps, breaking down the instruction to understandable pieces, a good quality in someone who is teaching people how to stay alive in moving water. The second lesson was a trip down the St. Mary River. For those who kayak locally, need I say more? For those of us who are novice it is an unknown entity fraught with perils — at least that was my thought when the second lesson drew near. I started the day with a degree of reserve but was continually encouraged that I could do this. I know I had a look of fear on my face when I left the shore at Matthew Creek and ventured out into the running water as we had been instructed to do. Heading slightly upstream and letting the current turn the boat, I kept the upstream side of the boat tipped up out of the water so the water did not catch the hull and flip the kayak and the contents.
Good so far. We were led down the river with careful guidance learning about eddys and how they are our friends. We learned how to cross the eddy line and traverse across an eddy. We moved along quickly, having to watch for rocks sticking up out of the water or trees newly deposited in the water (“trees and rocks and rocks and trees and water”). We were told how dangerous those items could be if we did not paddle hard to get past them. The top part of the curve is faster water than the bottom of the curve if you want an adventure. Next stop we learned to swim in moving water, on our backs, our feet in front of us, and then we learned to throw the bag and rescue a person floating quickly down the river. If we ever need that skill we have it. Remember to plant yourself so you are not pulled into the water as well. I went for a swim on purpose, to be rescued. I was thrown a line which I caught and then pulled myself hand over hand to the shore. All of the things learned so far were passed on by the instructor with kindness and directness from a solid knowledge base. By now I was getting tired, not being used to this particular activity. We had
some distance yet to go and the S-curve rapids were ahead. Those of us not proficient at rapids were given the option to walk past the rapids. The instructors took our kayaks and went through the rapids with confidence. I was glad to be able to walk as I watched the boats bumping and crashing into rocks along the way. Once back in our kayaks we carried on to our destination. “Are we there yet?” came to mind — but we were not there yet, and that was okay because our fearless leader kept gently coaxing us down the river. As I paddled along I was learning valuable lessons about the river, about kayaking, about staying with the group, about the instruction we were given and about myself. In the face of fatigue you have to go on because you have no other option when you are in the middle of a fast-moving river. We all made it to the trestle bridge safely. This letter is to say thanks to Rob Porter and his helper Dan for their expert ability to safely deposit two novices back on to the shore of the St. Mary River and for teaching me about digging deeper. Bangladesh: The Genocide Trials
G
enocide is always a difficult crime for courts to deal with, and all the more so when it happened 42 years ago. But Bangladesh is really making a mess of it – largely because most of the old men on trial are leading members of a political party that is part of the country’s official opposition. “It is undeniable that a massive genocide took place in the then East Pakistan,” Justice Anwarul Haque said on 17 July as he imposed a death sentence on Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid, the Secretary-General of the Jamaat-e-Islami party. “This massacre can only be compared to the slaughter by Nazis under the leadership of Adolf Hitler.” That is an exaggeration, but not a very big one. The official Bangladeshi estimate is that 3 million people were killed, and 200,000 women were raped, by the Pakistani army and its local collaborators during the independence war of 1971. Few countries have had a bloodier birth than Bangladesh. For a decade and a half after the partition of India in 1947, it was just the eastern wing of Pakistan, a country in two parts with a lot of Indian territory between them. But it was always controlled by the western half (today’s Pakistan), and when it attempted to break away in 1971 the Pakistan army tried to drown the independence movement in blood. It was aided by local paramilitary groups, made up mostly of pious Muslims who believed that Pakistan must be preserved as the single home for all the subcontinent’s Muslims. Initially they targeted secular intellectuals and the Hindu minority for murder, but in the end they were slaughtering whole villages that supported the nationalist cause. The killing
lasted for nine months. Eventually the Indian army intervened and the Pakistani forces were forced to surrender. But the Pakistani soldiers were all sent home, and the leaders of the local paramilitary forces that fought alongside them fled abroad. And then, after some years in exile, the leaders of the genocide came home again and went into politics. They came home because a military coup in 1975 virtually exterminated the family of Mujibur Rahman, the secular politician who led the country to independence. Gwynne The generals who wound up in power tried to win Dyer popular support by pushing an Islamic agenda, which left the returned exiles free to found the Jamaat-e-Islami Party. By the 1990s, when democracy returned, they were even serving as junior partners in governing coalitions. Their senior coalition partner was the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, created by one of the generals and still led by his widow, Khaleda Zia. The other main party, the Awami League, is led by Sheikh Hasina, the daughter of the martyred “father of the nation”, Mujibur Rahman. The two women loathe each other, and their bitter rivalry has dominated and often paralysed Bangladeshi politics for the past twenty years. Sheikh Hasina promised to put the perpetrators of the genocide on trial in her election platform in 2008. She won by a landslide, and the trials began in 2010. There was strong international support for her decision at first, but the conduct of the trials has left much to be desired. Most of the accused were certainly implicated in the killing, but the BNP has quite rightly accused the government of politicising the trials.
The Jamaat-e-Islami has portrayed the trials as an attack on Islam, and when the first death sentence was handed down in February there were violent nationwide protests by the Jamaat-e-Islami’s Youth League, leaving about 150 people dead. When the first life sentence was given out a few days later, hundreds of thousands of other young people demonstrated to demand the death penalty for all of those convicted. They were driven by the fear that if the BNP wins the next election (due by January), then it will amnesty all the surviving Jamaat leaders to preserve its electoral alliance with the Islamist party. The Awami League has responded to their demand by passing a new law that shortened the time allowed for appeals, so that they can be hanged before the next election. Lynch law. There is a way out of this, and it could end the twenty-year stalemate in Bangladeshi politics. In a poll before the last election, four out of five young Bangladeshis said they wanted to see the perpetrators of the genocide brought to trial: the crimes have not been forgotten. So give them what they want, but don’t kill anybody. The Awami League said that it was setting out to exorcise “historical ghosts”, and it can do so without hanging old men. Nor does the BNP need to preserve its alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami: the party only got 3 percent of the vote in the last election. So let the convictions stand but don’t hang anybody – most of them will be dead in a few years anyway – and just move on. It would take more statesmanship than either party has shown in the past, but it would open the way to a better future for the country. Gwynne Dyer is an international journalist based in London

The major championships are usually grinds, and for anyone playing in the afternoon Thursday, the first round of the British Open was even more of a grind than ever. Avalanche sign Duchene to five-year contract extension
DENVER - The Colorado Avalanche shored up centre ice by signing Matt Duchene to a five-year, US$30-million contract extension Thursday. Duchene, 22, has 82 goals and 111 assists in 266 games with the Avalanche. Colorado selected centre Nathan MacKinnon with the first pick in last month’s draft and also has Paul Stastny signed for one more season with a cap hit of $6.6 million. Ryan O’Reilly is expected to move to wing given the Avalanche’s depth down the middle. That depth could last a while with Duchene signed through 2018-19. Canadian Press
QB Durant back practicing with Roughriders
REGINA - Darian Durant returned under centre with the Saskatchewan Roughriders after suffering a foot injury in last week’s 39-28 road win over the Toronto Argonauts. Durant had a walking boot on his foot earlier in the week and didn’t practise before Thursday. Durant, 30, took the majority of snaps with the starting offence and performed well, Chamblin said. Student makes provincial rugby squad TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor
Conor Sinclair is hoping to make his mark on the provincial rugby scene, and he’s well on his way after making the U14 provincial rugby squad this summer. Sinclair, a student entering Grade 9 in the fall, is already playing with the Mount Baker rugby squad, and returned from Victoria this past weekend, where he participated in a sevens rugby tour-
nament. All players on the U14 provincial team were asked to play for their respective regions, but since the Kootenay zone doesn’t have a team, Sinclair was shuffled between Delta, Vancouver and the North Shore. Sinclair put his skills to work, scoring a few tries over the span of 10 games with different teams while playing different positions of prop, hooker and centre. “It was really fun. We
got down there, played a bunch of games— about 10 games and we had our first two, we played for the Delta team, the next ones we played for North Shore and Vancouver,” said Sinclair. “I didn’t feel out of the mix, but I don’t think I was the top contender, cause I’ve never played sevens before. I felt in it, but I didn’t feel out of it. We weren’t the the best, but we were pretty good for a 15’s team.”
Sinclair managed to earn his spot on the U14 provincial squad after attending a camp a few weeks ago and doing enough to impress the coaches while battling through an injury. “It was really cool, we had to drive all the way down to Vancouver so that wasn’t the funnest part,” said Sinclair, “but we got there—all great kids, coaches were awesome, played a couple games and they evaluated how you
played, what skills you have, what position you played and then they emailed you later.” Sinclair will get a bit of a break before he heads back down to Vancouver in the beginning of August for another rugby tournament. He’ll stay with some billets and train with the team until the UBC dorm rooms become available, where he will reside with the team for the duration of the event.

LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Kings took another step toward keeping their core intact, signing captain Dustin Brown to an eight-year, US$47-million contract extension Thursday. Brown, 28, helped the Kings win the Stanley Cup in 2012 as a point-a-game player in the playoffs. The extension means he’s signed through the 202122 season. “He has a passionate caring for this franchise and is totally
embedded in being part of it be successful,” general manager Dean Lombardi told the Kings’ website. “That’s the hallmark, first and foremost, of any great leader, and he just resonates that whenever you’re around him. The right-winger negotiated his own deal, according to agent Scott Norton. He has one year left on his
current contract that pays him $3.5 million and counts $3.175 million against the salary cap. Brown had 18 goals and 11 assists in 46 games last season. He has 181 goals and 207 assists over his nine-year NHL career spent entirely with the Kings. “He’s a classic case of somebody who’s grown not only as a player but as a man every year,” Lombardi said. “To see how much he’s grown as a person is as incredible as his game.”

There was a Heat wave in Surrey last weekend, as the Cranbrook U16 girls team headed down to the Lower Mainland for the Canadian Fastpitch Championships. The girls managed to earn two wins in a sixgame schedule, making it far enough to make an appearance in the ‘B’ pool final, where they lost in the final inning, said head coach Greg Sternig. “We played in the final game against a team from Estevan, Saskatchewan, and we were tied three-all going into the final inning,” Sternig said. “We left a runner on base, we couldn’t get her in, and they had a runner on base when they went up to bat and they got her in, so they beat us 4-3 in the final. “It was a great way to finish. Overall just a real fantastic experience for the girls.” Sternig and fellow coach Shawn Hillstead helped the girls navigate the challenges of playing in such a large tournament, which featured teams from the U.S. and the prairie provinces. “We were in just about every game,” added Sternig. “One game was a bit of a blowout—we got mercied—but all the other games were within one or two runs, so the girls played exceptional in a

Provincials were running on the same weekend on Vancouver Island, but Sternig said the teams that were at the tournament were likely the best in the province. “I think it was some of the best teams in B.C.
in that type of ball,” Sternig said. “There’s A and B divisions in softball and these girls were probably the best in the province—the girls that we were playing. “Some of the teams had elected to go to provincials in Port Alberni, the teams that showed up to this tournament— we feel—were better, and some of them went undefeated in the province all year, and we went toe-to-toe with them, so that was pretty remarkable.” Joining the team for added support in the dugout during the event was nine-year-old Madison Nakonechny, who was assigned to help out as the bat girl, and was quickly included into the Heat fold, according
to her father, Braden Nakonechny. “All weekend long Madison was treated as one of their own, included in their team cheers, she felt part of the team and was honoured to be part of such a fine group of young women,” the senior Nakonechny wrote in an email. “To the coaches and parents who also made Madison one of their own, you all added to the excitement this past weekend and thank you for the generous gift. Your community should be proud of how you all represented Cranbrook so well, always positive and all great role models for my young daughter just at the beginning of her softball career.”

GULLANE - Zach Johnson worked out how to play the first round of the British Open. Rory McIlroy couldn’t make anything work. Bouncing back from a tough loss last weekend, Johnson began with a 6-under 66 on a sunny Thursday at Muirfield another brilliant opening after a 65 at Lytham last year. “I don’t know what the secret is,” Johnson said. “I hit some nice shots and obviously I putted really, really well.” Now, he needs to finish the job. A year ago, the 2007 Masters champion followed up with a 74 in the second round on the way to a ninth-place fin-
ish. “This game demands resilience,” Johnson said. “That just comes with experience. That certainly comes with embracing what’s happened and then also throwing it behind you and plodding along to the future.” The immediate future looks pretty bleak for McIlroy, who only last August won his second major title with a runaway victory at the U.S. PGA Championship. He showed no signs of snapping out of his baffling slump this season, struggling mightily to a 79 that marked the second-worst round of his Open career. The only time McIlroy shot worse was an 80 at St. Andrews in 2010, but that was more a
product of a brutal wind than poor shots. This time, he could blame only himself. He didn’t even beat birthday boy Nick Faldo, who stirred up a bit of a tempest this week when he advised McIlroy to spend more time focused on golf rather than off-thecourse pursuits. Faldo, who turned 56 on Thursday, matched McIlroy’s score even though he’s barely played at all in the last three years. No one played better on the front side than Shiv Kapur of India, who birdied six of the first seven holes and made the turn with a 6-under 30, briefly moving to the top line of the leaderboard. But the back nine was playing much
tougher, which he discovered right away. He three-putted for double-bogey at the 10th to drop back.

CALGARY — The disaster in Lac-Megantic, Que., has prompted Canada’s two largest railways to review their own safety procedures. Nearly two weeks ago, an unmanned train belonging to the Montreal, Maine & Atlantic railway carrying 72 cars of oil crashed into the town, setting off explosions that are believed to have killed up to 50 people. PINE RIVER, Man. — A detective agency has been hired by a rancher to unravel the theft of about 1,000 bison from a massive range in western Manitoba. Tom Olson of High Country Bison says the big beasts were part of a herd of more than 2,000 animals, and their disappearance was only discovered after a count a few weeks ago. Olson says the theft would have required several semi-trailer trucks and an intimate knowledge of the range, which covers more than 12,000 hectares about 420 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg. He chose not to contact local RCMP, instead hiring a private firm which has posted a $5,000 reward and sent flyers to local residents. Olson — a successful international tax lawyer — believes the animals have either been sold to other bison ranchers or slaughtered. The Manitoba operation is part of a bison-recovery project Olson began 20 years ago with six animals on a property near Calgary, and which now includes four ranches across three provinces.

CALGARY — Alberta’s chief medical officer of health is warning victims of last month’s flooding in southern Alberta to be careful what they eat out of their gardens. Dr. James Talbot says the water that the gardens have been exposed to could contain bacterial and viral kinds of pathogens, as well as chemicals. Consuming contaminated vegetables can lead to a number of nasty illnesses including E. coli, norovirus and salmonella. But Talbot says there’s no need to throw out everything. He says things that were below ground such as potatoes and beets should be safe, as long as they’re thoroughly cleaned and well-cooked. Above-ground vegetables such as carrots, onions and lettuce should not be eaten raw.

W
atching the progress of the sturdy “Welcome to Cranbrook” structure over the past few weeks caused Rocky Mountain Naturalists to contemplate the “Ecological Pyramid” found at Elizabeth Lake. The question arose: “How do the little ones avoid predation?” Well, sometimes they don’t. The food chain is “a linear consequence of links in a food web, starting with a species which eats no other species in the web, and ends at a species that is eaten by no other species in the web”. All food chains must start with a producer. Consumers are organisms that eat other organisms. All organisms in a food chain, except the first organism, are consumers. Food chains vary in length from three to six or more levels. A food chain consisting of a flower, a frog, a snake and an owl has four levels, while a chain consisting of grass, a grasshopper, a rat, a snake and finally a hawk consists of five levels. Food chain studies have had an important role in ecotoxicology studies tracing the pathways and biomagnification of environmental contaminants. Tiny plants form the bottom of our pyramid. These producers are eaten by herbivores which, in turn, are consumed by carnivores. The top of our chain was well represented by an Osprey, two adult Bald Eagles, two species of Hawk and a large Falcon. Historically known as the Duck Hawk, Peregrine Falcons catch medium-sized birds in the air with swift, spectacular dives called stoops. In cities, they are masterful at catching pigeons. Elsewhere they feed especially on shorebirds and ducks. They often sit on high perches, waiting for the right opportunity to make their aerial assault. Peregrines were virtually eradicated from Eastern North America by pesticide poisoning in the middle 20th century. After significant recovery efforts, Pere-
Peregrine Falcon grines have made an incredible rebound and are now regularly seen in many large cities and coastal areas. Where conservation is applied, conservation works. For example, some wetland dependent species, like waterfowl, are doing much better thanks to careful planning and strong investment in wetland conservation. Raptors, such as the ‘Duck Hawk’ are recovering due to better pesticide regulations and management. Peregrine Falcons are the largest falcon over most of the continent, with long, pointed wings and a long tail. Be sure to look at shape as well as size: long primary feathers give the Peregrine a long-winged shape. As with most raptors, males are smaller than females. Adults are blue-gray above with barred underparts and a dark head with thick sideburns. Despite considerable age related and geographic variation, an overall steely, barred look remains. Another component of the food chain which
is seen during the summer at Elizabeth Lake is the Common Garter Snake. Little ones are born live sometime in July or August. Females are ‘ive-bearing, meaning their young grow inside them until fully developed. Usually there are 10 to 15 young per litter, and as many as 70 to 80 or as few as five. Common Garter Snakes in Canada represent some of the northernmost populations of reptiles in the world. These snakes reproduce less frequently, and have larger young than their southern counterparts. By studying these populations, we can learn how reptiles adapt to relatively harsh northern environments.
Garter snakes fit into the chain by eating slugs, frogs, toads, salamanders, tadpoles and insects. Occasionally, they also will eat small mammals, birds, fish and other reptiles. Young snakes seem to exist mainly on earthworms, at least until they are large enough to tackle more challenging prey. Garter snakes are found both in valleys and high elevation areas, from grasslands to deep coniferous forests. The snakes can survive within these varied habitats as long as they have good hibernacula that enable them to avoid freezing during the winter, and summer
hunting range with ample prey. The Kingbirds are starting a family just north of the brown blind. Look up into a small crabapple tree. The sparrows are keeping a low profile in the grass and shrubs while tending to their young. Naturalists will resume their regular Tuesday morning wanderings in September, hoping to observe the Fall Migration of shorebirds among others. In the meantime we’ll continue to visit, record and learn about the ‘consumers’ of Elizabeth Lake and many wonderful areas of the East Kootenay.

Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My aunt works at the doctor’s office where I am a patient. I am very private about my personal affairs, especially my health records. When I first saw this physician, I requested that my records be kept in a separate area so they could not be accessed by my aunt and would remain confidential. The receptionist assured me that would be done, saying many patients make similar requests. Somehow this got back to my aunt, and she is creating a huge family fuss over this, telling everyone she was called in by her boss and almost got fired over it. She also said I posted derogatory information concerning this on Facebook, which is a complete lie. I am beside myself. I never said anything about her looking at my records. I only asked that they be kept separate. How do I handle this? She is making something innocent into something ugly. Please help. -- B.K. Dear B.K.: It’s a good thing your aunt doesn’t have access to your records. It sounds as if she would put them all over the Internet out of spite. You have done nothing wrong and should say so. Tell your family members that you posted nothing on Facebook, nor did you make any comment to the doctor or his staff. (Although we wonder how your aunt heard about it.) Hold your head up and let her rant. As difficult as it may be, the storm will pass eventually. Your relationship with your aunt, however, may not recover. Sorry. Dear Annie: My ex-wife and I put our 24-year-old son through college. He recently was accepted to a foreign medical school that will cost $50,000 per year for the next three years. My ex decided to remortgage her house in order to finance a year or two of this expense. I’m sure she will feel that any additional expense he incurs should fall upon me. We shared his educational expenses up to this point, but as a retiree on a fixed income, I am not in a position to match her largesse. This has made me feel inadequate as a provider. I took out loans to finance my own graduate education and believe it would do our son a world of good in the long run to arrange his own tuition through loans and part-time jobs. I am thankful that my ex is able to assist our son, but it pains me to be unable to contribute equally. How can I best cope with this feeling of inadequacy? -- Worried in Altadena Dear Worried: Please don’t feel inadequate because you aren’t financing your child’s post-graduate degree. That is his responsibility. We understand that your ex wants to make this exorbitant expense easier to bear, but no parent is under an obligation to finance their adult child’s continuing education and the accompanying expenses. Remind yourself that you are teaching your son to be self-sufficient -- something much more valuable to his future than borrowing from his parents. Dear Annie: “Parents at Wits’ End” said they are trying to deal with their 31-year-old bipolar son, who refuses to take his medication because it makes him feel “slow.” You recommended NAMI’s Family-to-Family Program. Please suggest to these parents that they also contact Al-Anon Family Groups in their local area. This wonderful organization provides comfort and understanding to the families of alcoholics and those suffering from other addictions. Al-Anon focuses on oneself and not on the alcoholic. Meetings are held almost daily across the country and around the world. Rose was born in Cranbrook on September 11 in 1913. She attended Cranbrook High School and graduated in 1931. She married John Marra on April 3, 1932 in St. Mary’s Church in Cranbrook. John worked for the CPR and the family moved to many isolated places on the Kettle Valley line, Coryell, Drewry, Rampart, and Mayook.

In 1951 the family moved to Mission City where Rose was able to become active in the Boy Scout organization, the order of the Royal Purple, the curling club and the Catholic Women’s League. In 1959 John and Rose moved to Kamloops and lived in the heritage home at 3rd and Lansdowne by the CPR station. When the Thompson Mall was built in that location, John and Rose built a house and moved to Fernie Road. Once again Rose became very involved in various organizations. She became involved with the Southwest Citizen’s Organization, the National Institute for the Blind, Boy Scouts and the Can-Ital ladies. She also organized Italian classes for children of Kamloops. In 1982, Rose received the Kinsman Award for the Citizen of the year. That same year, John and Rose celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. In 1989 she received the The Freeman of the City of Kamloops Award. In 1990 she was presented with the Canada Volunteer Award of Merit. John and Rose lived in the Fernie Road home for many years where John grew a wonderful garden. Rose was kept busy canning and freezing all of the produce.

In 2002, John and Rose celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. John passed away in October of 2003 at the age of 94, three weeks short of his 95th birthday. Rose lived alone in the Fernie Road house until she had a stroke in April of 2006. She recovered fairly well and moved to the Chartwell Retirement home in North Kamloops and then to Ridgeview on Desmond Road. Rose is survived by her sons Ronald of Houston, Texas, Gerald of Seattle, daughters Maureen Krohman of Montrose, Margaret of Cranbrook, seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Prayers were held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church on Monday, July 15th at 7:00 pm. The Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, July 16th at 11:00 am; officiated by Father Peter Nguyen. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice, or the Wildlife Park’s Railroad Section. HALIFAX — A futuristic, solar-powered boat moored at Halifax harbour is attracting lots of attention and more than a few double takes along the city’s waterfront. The MS Turanor (TOR’-ah-nor) PlanetSolar made its first Canadian stop when it arrived this week in Halifax as part of a scientific expedition across the Atlantic Ocean and along the Gulf Stream. At 35 metres long, PlanetSolar is billed as the biggest solar boat ever built and is powered exclusively by the sun. Since its arrival, crowds of curious passersby have gathered to get a closer glimpse of the catamaran, which sits on large floaters and boasts 520 square metres of shiny solar panels on its sun deck. The panels charge
batteries which, in turn, power the boat’s electric motors. The boat, which will depart next week for St. John’s, N.L., is carrying five crew members and four scientists, who are collecting data in hopes of better understanding climate regulation and the interaction between ocean and atmosphere.
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Now he knows what it’s like to be a goldfish in a fishbowl. Two days after his helmet flooded during a spacewalk, astronaut Luca Parmitano relived the experience Thursday, describing how water kept trickling into his helmet until big globs covered his eyes, then his nose. It was hard to see, he said, and he could not hear. “For a couple of minutes there, maybe more than a couple of minutes, I experienced what
test pilot, said he was lucky to get back inside so quickly. He figures there was three pounds of water floating inside his helmet when his crewmates yanked it off, nearly a half-gallon. NASA managers have said Parmitano could have choked or drowned, and praised his calmness during the ordeal. Parmitano’s colleagues grabbed towels to mop his bald head once the 1 1/2-hour spacewalk ended. Some water bubbles escaped and floated away.
