‘Abbotsford lost an amazing person’ Langley crash takes the life of 20-year-old woman Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

A young Abbotsford woman who was killed in a car crash in Langley on Sunday is being remembered as a “great friend” and an “amazing person.” Amy Rybak, 20, was driving north on Fraser Highway in a Honda Civic just before 7 a.m. on Sunday when she collided with a Cadillac Escalade that was travelling east on the Langley Bypass. She was extricated from the wreckage by

emergency crews, but passed away later that day in hospital, according to RCMP. The driver of the Escalade, a 69-year-old Surrey man, was treated in hospital for relatively minor injuries and released, said police. Police say it appears the Escalade was proceeding through the intersection on a green light at the time of the crash, although that has yet to be confirmed. Neither alcohol nor speed appear to be factors in the crash, according to RCMP. Both vehicles will undergo mechanical inspections.

Rybak’s Facebook page indicates she was a 2011 graduate of Abbotsford Collegiate, had worked at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre, and had a long-time boyfriend. Friends and family posted comments on Facebook mourning her loss. “You were a good friend and a beautiful person. You will be dearly missed,” said one. Said another: “Rest in paradise, girl. Always had a good time with you. I have nothing but positive memories.” “Today Abbotsford lost an amazing person,” said a third.

Crown seeks jail term for dangerous driver

Kasha Dezainde was a vibrant young woman who had dreams of becoming an architect or a graphic artist. She had a smile that was “big and bright,” and she adored children. Family members shared their memories of Dezainde on Wednesday in Abbotsford provincial court during a sentencing hearing for Stephany Nyl. Nyl previously pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death in relation to Dezainde’s death on Jan. 30, 2011 at the age of 20. At about 4:30 p.m. on that day, Nyl, now 21, was driving her 1992 Nissan NX hatchback westbound in the 33500 block of Page Road when she hit an elevated railroad track at high speed. Crown counsel Wayne Norris said collision reconstructionists estimated Nyl’s speed to be 125 km/h in the 50 km/h zone. The impact sent the small car vaulting through the air, sliding across the road upon landing, and smashing into two trees on the driver’s side. Norris said the car travelled a total distance of 105 metres (330 feet) from the railroad tracks to the trees. Alcohol or drugs were not a factor in the crash, he said. Dezainde, the only passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene due to a severe skull fracture. Nyl was airlifted to hospital in critical condition and spent two months there recovering from injuries that included a broken collarbone, bleeding of the brain, a collapsed lung, spleen damage and soft-tissue injuries.

Nyl gave a brief statement in court, saying she had not intended Dezainde’s death. “I want Kasha’s family to know that I have taken responsibility and that I am very, very sorry,” she said. Norris said that although Nyl did not intentionally kill Dezainde, her sentence must be severe enough to send a message to others about the potential consequences of reckless driving. “Speeding drivers think it will never happen to them … They seem convinced of their own invulnerability and invincibility,” he said. Norris recommended that Nyl receive a jail term of 12 to 24 months, followed by three years of probation and a five-year driving ban. Derksen said if the judge believes a jail term is necessary, a more appropriate sentence would be 90 days, to be served on weekends, followed by a period of probation. He also asked the judge to consider a suspended sentence, which would involve Nyl completing a period of probation and having her sentence nullified if she complies with all her conditions and does not break the law during that time. A decision on the sentence has been reserved, tentatively scheduled for Aug. 7.

life,” and often laughed and squealed with delight. While other young people her age often focus on materialistic things, her niece took pleasure in the simple things, Jantzen said. Forcier said Dezainde also had a serious and empathetic side, with a gift for making her friends feel special. All three stated that she would have made an “amazing” mother. The Ride for Hope bike ride made a stop in Abbotsford to raise awareness and funds for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice on Wednesday afternoon. The seventh annual 200-kilometre ride from Hope to South Surrey brought about 50 riders through Abbotsford, where they stopped for a break at the construction site of the hospice. Among the participants were Vancouver Canucks alumni such as Dave Babych, Gary Nylund, Dean Malkoc and Terry Bingley. MORINEE The ride was ONLws.com abbyne launched in 2007, and has since raised over $433,000. The funds support B.C.’s newborns, children and teens with life-threatening illnesses, and their families, who require programs operated by Canuck Place. The new 10-bed facility is part of the Campus of Care project located on Marshall Road adjacent to Abbotsford Regional Hospital. The hospice offers care in a home-like setting to children with life-threatening illnesses.

BRICK PLANT CLEAN UP The provincial government will invest $60,410 to help clean up a former brick plant in Abbotsford and prepare it for commercial and residential use. Clayburn Industries Ltd. will clean up its site on Pine Street in downtown Abbotsford, as part of a brownfield renewal funding program, which supports 19 projects in 13 B.C. communities, helping turn former industrial sites into usable property. Clayburn Industries Ltd. operated a brick plant on the location since 1949. In 2011, it permanently closed its Abbotsford manufacturing plant, but kept its head office there. A brownfield is an abandoned or underused industrial or commercial property, often contaminated, but with strong redevelopment potential.

The Mill Lake Cruise-in Car show drew crowds into Mill Lake Park on Saturday to see between 400 and 500 cars. The second annual event featured hot rods, street rods, muscle cars, vintage cars, trucks and more. The event was free to the public, but registration for cars and 50/50 ticket sales raised about $20,000 for the MSA Museum Society and the Abbotsford Arts Council. Pete Zomar, who organized the event along with his wife Robbie, said they sold about $7,000 in raffle tickets, and raffled off an engine to a lucky attendee. Dorothy van der Ree, executive director of the MSA Museum, said the money raised will go towards supporting and continuing programming at the museum, as well as with the Abbotsford Arts Council.

Teen saved from drowning in pond Several involved in rescue on Discovery Trail A man in his 30s helped police from land and kept watch over the discarded gear. The victim was pulled from the water and received treatment from BC Ambulance and Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service members. MacDonald said it is believed the youth had ingested a combination of marijuana and LSD, which caused him to panic. He was taken to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. MacDonald said the teen likely would have drowned if not for the quick actions of the friend and the officers. Police did not get the name of the teen boy who guided officers to the scene nor the man who helped from the bank of the pond. They now want to identify and thank them, MacDonald said. They, or anyone who knows them, is asked to contact the Abbotsford Police Department at 604859-5225.

A teenage boy was saved from drowning in a pond on Discovery Trail in Abbotsford on Wednesday afternoon. Abbotsford Police were called at about 3:15 p.m. to reports that a youth had tripped down a hill and fallen into a pond on the trail near Wells Gray Avenue and McKinley Drive. The first two officers who arrived were directed to the exact location by another teenage boy. When the officers arrived at the pond, they found two youths in the water — the one who had tripped and was in medical distress and a friend who was trying to help him. MacDonald said the water was about chest deep, but the bottom was “like mucky sludge” and the friend was having difficulty getting his friend out of the pond. The officers removed their excess equipment, traversed the 30-foot steep embankment and entered the water. A third officer arrived on the scene and also jumped into the pond.

A man reported missing from Abbotsford last week still had not been located as of yesterday, and police continue to appeal for information. Baljinder Sahota, 41, left his family home around noon on Thursday and has not been in contact with family or friends since. He did not bring identification, money or belongings with him, according to police. His 1994 black Honda Civic was found the following afternoon in a parking lot at Harbour Avenue and Bridge Street in Mission not far from the Fraser River. Police feared that Sahota might have jumped in the river, resulting in the search being expanded to the water. APD Const. Ian MacDonald said authorities in other jurisdictions have been notified of Sahota’s disappearance. SAHOTA “There are still people actively looking for him on land,” he said. MacDonald said Sahota has no history of drugs, gangs or other criminal activity. Sahota is 5’ 9” and weighs about 160 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a white Puma jacket with black track pants and blue runners. Police are asking that anyone with information, including possible sightings of Sahota or his vehicle (licence plate 344MFR) anytime after noon on July 11, to immediately contact the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-8595225 or text abbypd (222973).

No restrictions on turtle sales

Abbotsford council has decided not to restrict the sale of turtles, as proposed by the owner of a local reptile rescue that has been overwhelmed by surrendered red-eared sliders. Mike Hopcraft, owner of The Reptile Guy’s Rescue and Education Centre, made an appeal to council in May, calling for the city to restrict the sale of turtles under four inches long. He said he hoped that would stop pet stores from buying large numbers of red-eared slider turtles, which eventually grow about a foot long. He said many of the turtles are surrendered to his rescue, or released into Abbotsford’s lakes and ponds, where they are an invasive species that destroy the local ecosystem. Council received a report last Monday from the manager of bylaw enforcement in response to Hopcraft’s request, stating that the only municipalities in the Lower Mainland that regulate turtle sales are Vancouver, Richmond and Surrey. Coun. Henry Braun said he did not feel any restrictions would be enforceable, adding that the report states that even after a ban, residents could go to a neighbouring municipality and buy a turtle. The report also states that only one pet store in Abbotsford sells turtles, and they are opposed to potential restrictions due to potential economic hardship. Coun. Patricia Ross said she was convinced by Hopcraft’s presentation that turtle sales are a local environmental issue, adding that while some other municipalities have an all-out ban, Hopcraft only wanted to increase restrictions locally.

‘Speak up,’ not ‘shut up’

“Shut up or else.” So read a message scrawled on the door of the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association (ADBA), discovered last Thursday morning. Presumably aimed at the organization’s opposition to a 20-unit low-barrier housing project for homeless men, the crude threat illustrates the highly charged emotions surrounding this controversial issue. Many local business owners are deeply concerned about the impact of such a facility on the downtown core, with dire predictions of an influx of more homeless, and a higher public profile of drug and alcohol abuse. Meanwhile, advocates of the proposal point out that a serious homeless issue already exists in the downtown area, and it can be effectively addressed through a “housing first” approach, which is based on the concept that it is difficult to address issues of substance abuse or mental health until people have a roof over

their heads. Abbotsford does indeed have a longstanding homelessness problem, and it requires leadership and innovative strategies. City hall has recently demonstrated little of either. Meanwhile, a considerable amount of misinformation and fear-mongering is circulating around this particular proposal, and that cripples a reasonable and productive dialogue. Abbotsford Community Services will host an open house on July 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. at its location at 2420 Montrose Ave. Representatives of the ADBA will also be present, and the public is welcome to attend and ask questions. We urge all the stakeholders in the homelessness issue – including our elected representatives – to take the opportunity to become informed and involved. The appropriate message is “speak up,” not “shut up.”

Other Hand I was blushing a little last week when it was announced on Facebook (not mine by the way) that the certificate recognizing my milestone 50th blood donation was finally mounted on a plaque. Kudos came to me from all over, and stirred a little discomfort as I don’t donate for the accolades, but in a small way to pay back for the donations that many decades ago saved my life. I received the certificate some months, and two subsequent donations, ago. And while I’ve “paid off” my debt of 22 transfusions (which, by the way, I also paid for at $25 a pop since they were administered in the United States) I still feel compelled to continue.

Because, thanks to them, at least I’m here to complain about or praise life, and extoll the value of blood donations. I also found out this weekend, courtesy of our daily newspapers, that only 3.7 per cent of people actually donate blood in this country, yet 52 per cent of Canadians say they or a family member have needed blood or blood products. You would think with that disparity and that volume of blood consumption, more people would roll up their sleeves and spend an hour or so bleeding for the common good. The actual taking of the blood takes only about five minutes through a relatively painless insertion of a needle. The rest of the time is made up of questions relating mostly to your previous sexual activity or whether or not you have messed around with monkeys (those who donate will smile knowingly). While much of the controversial content in the dailies’ feature stories related to the inappropriate and

occasionally deadly administration of blood products to patients, the bottom line is that they do save a great many lives. The errors are human, and not the fault of the donation or transfusion. In fact, according to statistics and

The average number of transfusions needed to save a single car-crash life is 50, roughly the sum total of all my years of donating! Add to the fact that a blood donation has a very brief shelf life. Platelets only last five days; 42 days for red blood cells. Yet every 60 seconds someone in Canada will receive a transfusion. So this summer, between the beach and barbecues, take 60 minutes to help save a life. You have about five litres of blood within your body, and they take less than half a litre which is recovered very quickly. You suffer no ill effects; it costs you nothing but a little time; and you will feel good about giving to others. Besides, after donating you get a free drink and as many cookies as you can handle.

Housing-first approach saves taxpayers money

I was very encouraged when I read about Abbotsford Community Servicesâ€™ (ACS) housing project for homeless men. I was particularly pleased to read that they are planning on using the â€œhousing firstâ€? model, in which those who are housed do so in conjunction with support for their addictions and/ or mental health concerns â€“ not after they are sober or mentally stable. I was equally dismayed that the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association (ADBA) is so opposed to this project. This method of helping those who are homeless has

proven to be successful for the people it serves as well as the communities in which they are housed. The Vancouver Sun ran a series of articles last fall reporting on the huge success of this method in Vancouver. The â€œAt Homeâ€? projectÂ works with the principle that chronically homeless people with serious mental illnesses or addictions will stabilize if they are given a house first and then support services like drug counselling, health care, etc. It has also proven to save taxpayers thousands of dollars. The cost of housing and supporting the 10 per cent of the participants

Business association receives threat Note written on door of ADBA says ‘shut up or else’

“You need to shut up or else.” That phrase was scrawled on the door of the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association (ADBA), discovered on Thursday morning. The words were written over a notice the ADBA had posted, calling for the public to sign a petition against a 20-unit housing project for homeless men proposed by Abbotsford Community Services (ACS). Tina Stewart, executive director of the ADBA, said she felt taken aback by the threat but not entire-

ly surprised, due to the controversy that has sprung up since the proposal was announced last month. “I would hope it’s an idle threat, but it’s obviously a threat.” The Abbotsford Police Department responded to the ABDA’s call about the vandalism. Rod Santiago, executive director of ACS, called the incident “very unfortunate,” and said ACS does not condone such behaviour and no one should resort to any other means than respectful dialogue to address the issue. Stewart thinks the threat came from a supporter of the proj-

ect. However, she said she is concerned the vandalism is “the tip of the iceberg,” in what will continue to be a divisive proposal for stakeholders in the downtown. The proposed facility would providing housing for homeless men for up to two years. It would be a low-barrier facility, meaning those who use drugs or alcohol would not be turned away. This notice is published pursuant to section 4 of the Recall and Initiative Act. Approval in principle has been granted on an application for an initiative petition. The Title of the Initiative is: An initiative to amend the Police Act. Summary of Initiative: The initiative draft Bill entitled, “Sensible Policing Act” proposes to amend the Police Act to no longer use provincial police resources on the enforcement of current laws in relation to simple possession and use of cannabis by adults. The draft law would prohibit the use of provincial police resources for this purpose, would require police to report in detail to the Minister of Justice any actual use of resources for this purpose and why it was necessary, and require the Minister to publish that report. The Bill also proposes that the province would call upon the Federal Government to repeal the federal prohibition on cannabis, or give British Columbia an exemption, such that British Columbia is able to tax and regulate cannabis similar to the regulation of alcohol and tobacco. As well it proposes that British Columbia shall establish a Provincial Commission to study the means and requirements necessary for the province to establish a legal and regulated model for the production and use of cannabis by adults. Last, the Bill would make non-lawful possession and use of cannabis by minors an offence similar to possession and use of alcohol.

The Abbotsford Horseshoe Club (AHC) drew pitchers from across B.C. and Washington for its Highwayman/ B.C. International Tournament earlier this month, and locals performed well. Garry Racette (men’s D) and John Collin (elders C), both of Abbotsford, won their respective divisions, and Racette also won a trophy as the player who scored the highest over his entering average. HAFI adapts homes for B.C. seniors and people with disabilities

Brenda has always been an active woman. However, recent health issues including osteoarthritis in her left knee and losing kidney function have slowed her down. Her mobility is limited and she is now on dialysis three days a week. To adjust to her changed circumstances, Brenda sought help with her daily living activities. Part of that help came from the Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program offered through BC Housing. Launched in January 2012, the HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently. Brenda applied for a new walk-in bathtub because she couldn’t safely get out of the tub on her own. Walk-in tubs include additional safety measures such as anti-slip floors, grab bars, and a very low step in. Home adaptations may also include handrails in halls or stairs, ramps for

easier access, easy-to-reach work and storage areas in the kitchen, lever handles on doors or faucets, walk-in showers, and bathtub grab bars and seats. Brenda is a strong advocate for the program and has even shared HAFI brochures with nurses in the renal unit where she undergoes dialysis. They take on No. 5 North Shore (5-7-1-1) in a best-of-three first round series this week. Game 1 is at 8 p.m. Wednesday at MSA Arena. Game 2 will be at North Shore, but the date and time had not been set as of press deadline. Game 3, if necessary, will be Sunday at 2 p.m. Abbotsford Recreation Centre will be the venue, as the ice is set to go back into MSA Arena later this week. “We can’t run and gun with them – they’ve got a real good team over there,” Nishiyama said of the Indians. “I’m expecting a war. November 3, 1947 - June 20, 2013 With sorrow in our hearts and joy in her being, we release our wonderful sister, Dawne Louise Campbell to the universe. Into the loving arms of our parents, Jack and Vi Campbell who went ahead of her. Dawne was known for her love of family and friends – her greatest joy was to be surrounded by them. She cherished each and every one. She was just telling us that she’s had a wonderful life. In the last six months Maggie, her puppy, had brought her extra joy and happiness. Dawne lived her life with “no woulda, shoulda, coulda’s”. She enjoyed travelling, theater, shopping, birthdays and celebrations. To all, Dawne would say “don’t mourn for me, be free, joyful and happy . Think of me when your spirits are soaring, as I will be there with you ... in a laugh, a hug, a memory.
