Burnaby council has agreed to allow Shaw Communications to install Wi-Fi at civic facilities after the company agreed to provide the service free to the general public. The company originally proposed installing the wireless networks throughout Burnaby and paying city hall a user fee to do so. But it turns out, Shaw only planned to make the Wi-Fi accessible to its own customers, part of its national initiative to provide the service outside customers’ home and business connections, according to a city staff report. So Burnaby put out a call to all telecommunications companies to submit their own Wi-Fi proposals, but there were no takers as they didn’t see it as being their core business, Coun. Dan Johnston told council Monday. Months later, Shaw offered a new option—in exchange for a reduced fee paid to the city, it would provide access to all, with Shaw customers receiving enhanced service. Please see shaW, a4
