The stunning backdrop of four hectares of Metchosin farmland will greet guests to the annual Feast of Fields this fall. “I love this event,” said Fiona Hamersley Chambers of Metchosin Farm. “As a farmer and a producer this just ties in so well with what I do and love.” It’s a return to the scene for some longtime Feasters, the venue is a portioned-off parcel of Sea Bluff Farm, which hosted the event in 2000. “I’m looking forward to seeing what the other chefs and vendors have put together because as a farmer I don’t get to go out that often,” she said with a laugh. “I commute from my house to the greenhouse and back again.” The farm and farmer were “broken in” hosting a friend’s wedding and now they’re ready for the influx of up to 600 foodies Sept. 22. “Feast of Fields likes to highlight the

farms around Vancouver Island,” said Jennifer Freeman of FarmFolk CityFolk which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. “It’s a very fun and tasty way to support the food security movement.” Feast of Fields started on Vancouver Island in 1998 and has been held twice in Metchosin, at Sea Bluff and Metchosin Sheep Farm in 2010. Over the 15 years, FarmFolk CityFolk has donated more than $100,000 back into B.C. communities. Feast proceeds these days are invested in Vancity’s microloan program for local farmers and food producers. “Food security is often in the hands of

B.C.’s auditor general can look into any project where provincial funding is contributed, said communications manager Colleen Rose, who could not speak to specific cases. “If there’s an issue that arises that has some immediacy, we can jump on things and be flexible, but because audits are planned well in advance, it would be a number of months down the road before a new audit was even started,” she said. The sewage treatment project includes a wastewater treatment plant, to be built at McLoughlin Point in Esquimalt, and a biosolids facility planned for either Hartland landfill in Saanich or Viewfield Road in Esquimalt. New road leads to Langford Cruising along in a pink Cadillac, Langford Mayor Stew Young was in the first car to drive on the Leigh Road interchange on Saturday evening. “I was surprised by how many vehicles were waiting to use the interchange,” said Michelle Mahovlich, Langford director of engineering. The three ramps opened on the interchange at 6 p.m. Before it opened staff worked on adjusting the entrances and exits of McCallum, Savory, Leigh and Spencer roads. Signal lights at the Trans Canada Highway and Spencer Road were removed. The herbs are also used for cooking at the shelter. Collett said when she cuts some of the herbs and puts them in the kitchen, they are used and gone in a flash. “They say it’s great to have it fresh,” Collett said. Everything from French tarragon to Greek oregano grows in the garden. A sign by the herbs reads “We’re planted here for you to eat, we like to be watered as a treat, give us some water every couple of days, and enjoy us in the kitchen in so many ways.” To make money for the society’s herb garden, Collett splits the herbs she grows at home and then sells the plants by donation at the front of her property on the 2900 block of Pickford Road in Colwood. “They go out on the street and the donation go towards maintaining (the garden),” Collett said. “This season has been very slow but it might perk up.” The herbs are out most weekends and some weekdays, weather and Collett’s schedule permitting. kwells@goldstreamgazette.com

B.C.’s anti-gang squad and local police busted two top-level drug traffickers in Greater Victoria. Police arrested a 37-year-old Langford man and a 27-year-old Saanich man on June 6, both who have a history of violent crimes and drug trafficking, and ties to organized drug crime in the Lower Mainland. “These guys represent the top of the food chain for the Greater Victoria area,” said Staff Sgt. Conor King with the Victoria police. Both men were released and no charges have been laid yet. Sgt. Lindsey Houghton, with the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of B.C. (CFSEU-BC), expects charges to be filed within “a month or two.” CFSEU-BC officers led the investigation which culminated with the two suspects arrested at a residence in the 2700-block of Peatt Rd. in Langford. Investigators also searched a home in the

2700-block of Claude Rd. in Langford and in the 500-block of Heatherdale Ln. in Saanich. “These guys were the two highest priority targets on Vancouver Island,” Houghton said. “What our investigators found most disturbing is that the (home) on Claude Road is in a highly populated area with families and right behind a daycare.” Officers seized 28 pounds of marijuana, two kilograms of cocaine, one kilogram of crystal meth, 10 litres of GHB, 200 pills of ecstasy, 9 mm ammo, scales, a money counter and gun holsters. Media photo-op just not enough When police and B.C’s anti-gang squad busted two of Greater Victoria’s “top-level” suspected drug traffickers recently, they held a press conference and laid out a large quantity of drugs and paraphernalia for photographers and news media to record. Public safety Police were proud to at risk with drug display their bounty, saying it “dismantled suspects at large (the suspect’s) ability to make money and create crime.” But much like a fishing expedition, the suspects were caught and released, like large trophy fish, back to society. The reason, police say, is to allow investigators time to establish a maximum number of criminal charges. Police further stated they are “concerned” that both ammunition and gun holsters were found, but no weapons. Can we surmise from this then, that these two “highest priority targets on Vancouver Island,” who supposedly operated their growop-come-drug storage operations in heavily populated neighbourhoods filled with families and children, are now out and about with weapons? Police admit the two suspects have a history of violent crime, drug trafficking and connections to organized drug crime in the Lower Mainland. How can the public have any confidence in our justice system, if, after the arrest of suspected criminals that police say “represent the top of the food chain for the Greater Victoria area,” they are allowed to walk away – even if temporarily and under a close watch? The police may have made a dent in their operations, but there is no doubt that these two highly organized, apparently successful drug dealers will be able to pick up where they left off with the help of lesser-known and lesswatched associates. The arrest of suspects at that level needs to be more than simply a photo-op for police. The public deserves to know that along with taking the drugs off the street, the people behind the drugs are off the street as well. What do you think? Government and Service Employees’ Union, which donated $1.4 million to the party in the past eight years, nosing out the Canadian Union of Public Employees and the Hospital Employees’ Union. Wrong location picked for new dog park I am all for a dog-leash-free park but Langford just renovated Glen Lake Park for children, moving the school playground there and adding a bathroom. Unleashed strange dogs can be scary for children, not to mention some can be dangerous, especially when not controlled by their owners. Dogs were banned from school playgrounds because many owners were not responsible for picking up their excrement. Now that same issue will plague a new playground and sand beach designed for children to run barefoot. Dogs should have a place to play and roam free in Langford. However it needs to be a place not already designed for children to play and feel safe. Lara Allsopp Langford

Pedestrian overpass only a matter of time Re: Risks outweigh costs for overpass (Letters, June 12) Reader Ron Rayner hit the nail on the head in his observations regarding the lack of pedestrian overpass at Spencer Rd. As a group of us sat at our childrens ballgame last week, we reviewed the new walking trails set up by the city, and we had a full consensus. We all fully expect to see a pedestrian overpass built sometime in the next five years, lovingly named after whoever the poor person is who is going to lose their life trying to get across the highway instead of following the new prescribed, out of the way, long walking route. The road to nowhere cost $35

Spencer Road needs pedestrian crossing I am a senior who uses the Spencer Road access to reach downtown Langford on a regular basis to shop and keep medical appointments. I do not own a car, (my choice). I walk for health reasons. I think it is very inconsiderate on behalf of Langford city council to not have provided a safe and secure overpass before the decision to have the interchange installed. Many residents who live on the north side of the Trans-Canada Highway will be expected to travel up a very busy highway, then climb up a steep grade to access the Leigh Road interchange, and walk back on Goldstream Avenue to reach downtown Langford. Why were grants from the federal and provincial governments not applied for to construct an overpass at Spencer Road long before the interchange construction began? Ann Bailey Langford

leader, stated unequivocally she posted all of her expenditures online from her taxi chits on up. I am left wondering why it seems to be such a stretch for other parties, both federal and provincial, who conveniently hide behind “process,” to announce and follow through on their willingness to do the same. These are taxpayer dollars that are spent; read you and me. I think if their party has a problem with that, it should not prevent individual MPs and MLAs from doing their own postings. Density increase still possible for Royal Bay Re: Royal Bay build hits roadblock (News, May 29) Your subtitle (Colwood committee says no to proposed density increase) is somewhat misleading. I attended the May 21 meeting with the Colwood Planning Committee with 160 fellow Royal Bay homeowners. After almost four-anda-half hours, the committee decided to defer a decision for the property at 467 Royal Bay Dr. It was strong community opposition that led to the deferment. Never did this committee outright oppose increased density. Committee members mentioned several times the OCP was outdated and should be changed to reflect today’s slower real

estate market. Every homeowner who spoke voiced unanimous opposition to this proposed development and bylaw changes. A petition was presented to the committee that evening. The current OCP is for 38 townhomes. Misra Architect Ltd. first presented a plan for 128 residences, including two sixstorey buildings, then a plan for 70 residences, mixed apartment and townhomes. Both plans were presented at well-attended public meetings. Royal Bay is a carefully planned community. Allowing high-density blocks of apartments and townhomes next to single family homes without proper transition shows lack of planning. Council shouldn’t be asking existing property owners to accept losses on their homes’ value. Seemingly arbitrary changes

to zoning bylaws undermine council’s authority and standing. Colwood cannot attract qualified developers if it is too willing to change bylaws to fit its commitment to increase density at any cost, including reputation. Sandra Jones Colwood

Big Bike teams pedal with heart in mind Riders set to cruise Langford on Friday

Too big for a bike lane, the Heart & Stroke Big Bike will make its way through Langford this Friday. “It’ll be travelling through the heart of Langford,” said Jeremy Loveday, community development co-ordinator with the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Throughout the day nine teams of 29 pedallers will propel the bike through the streets to raise funds and awareness. Each rider commits to raising a minimum of $50 to take part in the event. All of the money raised will go to the

Heart & Stroke Foundation. “This event raises money for research, advocacy and health promotion,” said Loveday, adding the goal this year is to hit $30,000 from the Langford event. Last year it brought in $22,000. This is the 20th year of the big bike travelling the country. There are 12 of the multi-person bikes touring Canada since April. The rides in Greater Victoria are the last events of the tour. “It’s a lot of fun and a team-building experience,” Loveday said. Teams will take the bike through downtown Langford from noon to 7:30 p.m. on June 21. A booth will be set up at Veteran’s Memorial Park and donations are accepted there. What began as an idea from a physiotherapist five years ago morphed into a passion but it didn’t always come easy. “(Standard) swim lessons didn’t adapt the strokes for me. I failed Level 4 seven times,” said the Colwood teen.

Things changed when the 17-year-old began swimming with the Paralympics club at Crystal Pool in Victoria. “Now swimming is my life, I can’t imagine not swimming,” she said. “It’s amazing to be at a large para swim meet where

all the people are disabled and everyone is competing and they don’t care what other people think.” She’s adapted the strokes to suit her abilities, for butterfly she swims with just her left arm. “I can’t move my right arm back enough for it. It’s an illegal stroke if your elbow doesn’t clear the water,” she said. Training six days a week is also improving her movement outside the water, with significant improvement of strength and mobility of her right arm. “I used to have difficulty even carrying a jacket,” she said. Zelych graduates from Belmont this month and plans to spend the next year training for the Paralympic trials. Jazz ain’t what you think. The slogan for this year’s toe-tapping, finger-snapping dedication to jazz music, says it all. “Jazz is what you feel,” said TD Victoria International Jazz Festival producer Darryl Mar. “Jazz is very broad and encompasses all styles of music. Some people think it’s all improvised or avant garde, but that’s not it.” With an assortment of musicians moulding the festival, Mar’s best advice is simple. “If you’ve never been here before, you need to come out, open your ears and listen to music.” One act Mar won’t miss is Bettye LaVette’s show, June 21 at the Royal Theatre. “I have been trying to get her here for five years,” he said eagerly. LaVette started her career in 1962 at age 16. She toured with big-name musicians including Otis Redding and James Brown.

Throughout the 10-day festival more than 350 musicians will perform and it’s a lot of work organizing and booking all the talent. “In October we will start booking for next year’s Jazz Fest,” Mar said. This year, the festival is welcoming a slew of new

musicians including Boi Akih, Serena Ryder and Macy Gray. A new venue this year is the Smoken Bones Cookshack for late night jam sessions. The restaurant, located in The Hudson building, will host the Ashley Wey Trio and the Kelby MacNayr Trio. After a threeyear hiatus, Sugar Nightclub is back on the festival venue list. The Boom Booms, Lee Field and The Expressions, Vieux Farka Touré, Ganga Giri and Tinsley Ellis are all playing at the club. Other popular venues include the Royal

Theatre, Alix Goolden Hall and Victoria Event Centre. “Of the over 80 performances, 24 of them are absolutely free,” Mar said about the shows held at Centennial Square. All of the performances at the downtown venue are free, wuth the exception of Five Alarm Funk ($18) on June 23 and Red Baratt ($28) on June 27. Both shows are at 7 p.m. The festival is also hosting free workshops, but attendees are required to pre-register. Olga Mosca and Logan Volkers with Victoria’s Salsa Caliente have been dancing together less than six months. But in their first competition, June 7, they beat out far more experienced dancers to win Victoria’s amateur championship. The couple moved on to the Northwest Qualifiers for the World Latin Cup in Portland, Oregon last weekend where they competed against dancers from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and California for a chance to move on to the World Latin Cup, to be held in Miami in December. Mosca and Volkers were responsible for editing their own music, choreographing their own routine, making their own costumes and rehearsing until the competition. Since their win in Victoria, they had the opportunity to train with world famous choreographer and judge, Nelson Flores from New York, and trained with Christina Morrison from Salsa Caliente, also a World Salsa Open Judge, until the competition. No cash for buskers Festival shut out of B.C. arts grants Daniel Palmer News staff

An annual arts festival expected to attract up to 200,000 people to downtown Victoria won’t get provincial funding this year, leaving its organizer with difficult cost-cutting decisions. The free Victoria International Buskers Festival takes place July 19 to 28, featuring actors, musicians, dancers and acrobats on outdoor stages on Government and Langley streets. Organizer John Vickers said he was rejected for B.C. Creative Communities and B.C. community gaming grants, despite receiving $20,000 from the province in 2012. “It’s a bitter pill to swallow when you feel you’re doing this for a better downtown, and during the festival itself we really don’t make a lot of revenue,” Vickers said. “I’m looking at cutting back on portable washrooms and seating, for starters.” Last year, the festival created $3 million in direct and indirect spending in the Capital Region, prompting the Capital Regional District and City of Victoria to renew $16,500 in grants for this year’s event. Heritage Canada is also providing a $20,000 grant. But Vickers said even with

CRD approves some funds, more needed The CRD will provide a $7,000 grant for the International Buskers Festival, but organizer John Vickers said the society doesn’t qualify for a CRD annual operating grant. “Operating grants tend to be for larger organizations doing yearround programming,” said James

Lam, the CRD’s arts development program manager. However, the Victoria Jazz Society and Victoria Film Festival receive operating grants of $54,000 and $30,000 respectively. Lam said Vickers has never applied for an operating grant.

I don’t get (the City of Victoria grant) until the month of the festival … it’s just a struggle,” he said. Last December, Victoria city council approved $156,000 in festival grants, but any increase in funding would need to be a regional discussion, said Victoria Mayor Dean Fortin. “Does every community have a small Canada Day festival, for example, or does everyone contribute to the $200,000 to $300,000 festival that happens in the downtown core? It’s recognizing that these events promote

the region,” Fortin said. The B.C. government benefited from the buskers festival last year to the tune of $79,000 in tax revenue, according to an Economic Planning Group report. Victoria-Beacon Hill MLA Carole James said she’s surprised the province hasn’t stepped up to fund a festival that has proven itself as an economic driver. “It’s very short sighted to not approve this grant, particularly when you’re a month and a half away from the festival,” James said. Sailing the Dragonfly is not about winning, it’s about racing. The boat, you see, is built for one thing: all-out speed. The fun comes in sailing it, a challenging task on the volatile high seas off Vancouver Island. A five-time winner of the Black Press Van Isle 360° International Yacht Race, Dragonfly has lived a rich life, and is be passing through town this week as the 42 competing yachts enter Victoria for stage 10 of this year’s 11-stage race that circumnavigates Vancouver Island. “We love the boat and are fortunate to have won the race, but the Van Isle 360 is about the people on the stops along the way. That’s what makes it worth doing and why we come back,” said owner Richard Ackrill. To say the boat is fast is an understatement. Dragonfly’s been the fastest overall in the Van Isle 360 all but once in six years. Dragonfly is more than just the fastest catamaran around, it’s also one of the biggest. At 52 feet long, Ackrill can have a hard time finding a place to keep her. During the offseason, Dragonfly lives near Everett, Wash., where it’s lovingly tended to by its previous owner in a spot that can accommodate it. But it’s been in Victoria since it participated in the

Swiftsure race last month. This week Dragonfly is off in search of another Van Isle 360 win, as the race which began on June 8 enters its final two days, June 21 to 22, from Victoria to Nanaimo. “I first joined the crew for the outer legs of this race in 2001 and loved it,” Ackrill said.

The last leg ■ A final briefing for the skippers and crews will happen at the Strathcona Hotel on June 20 at 6:30 p.m. in preparation for the final two legs of the 11 stage race, June 21-22. ■ Victoria to Nanaimo is the most valuable leg in terms of scoring. ■ Navigators and skippers assess weather forcasts, tidal predictions and local knowledge to determine the best route through the Gulf Islands.

The owner at that time, Pat McGarry, sold it to a Florida owner but it soon became available once more and Ackrill jumped at the opportunity to keep it here. “We all missed (the boat) so much, I talked to Pat McGarry, who was working at a marine company in Washington, about using the facilities to store it if I bought it back,” Ackrill said. “So I bought it and to this day we actually use a huge forklift to pull the boat out of the water near Everett, where it lives.” Ackrill handles the helm some of the time, as well as sail trim and tactics. The crew of five includes

McGarry handling most of the helm duties, Sandy Dick on mainsail, Nick Banks on navigation and tactics and Gord Irving on the foredeck. The boat will likely be in the running to win the Van Isle 360 this week but the stories are more often based on the time spent visiting stops along the way, Ackrill said. The race includes social events during the off days: a stop at a fish farm where 400 people dine on salmon near Hardwick Island, a stop at Telegraph Cove and a day in Winter Harbour where 25 winter residents and summer residents put on a midday banquet. “Everyone in the community lends a hand to put that on. We just love it,” Ackrill said.

The Spectrum Community school Thunder is poised to take its licks as the city’s third high school football program. As the new kid on the block, it will be a few years of growing pains before the Thunder can compete with the Mount Douglas Rams and Belmont Bulldogs. The Thunder played its first exhibition game on June 7, a 45-8 drubbing at the hands of Belmont. “Not bad for a group of guys who just started this spring,” said Spectrum head coach Roy Vollinger. It was the first taste of game action for most of the 40 players who will carry the Thunder in its inaugural junior and senior team seasons.
