Sometimes called Lou Gehrig’s disease, ALS is a terminal neuromuscular disease that causes the voluntary muscles to progressively weaken, resulting in an inability for a person to move their arms, legs and body. The Fraser Valley Walk for ALS committee set a goal of raising $100,000 this year. The total has not yet been released. Eighty-five per cent of all money raised goes towards research or patient care.

Several Abbotsford Police officers and bystanders who helped in a dramatic rescue early Sunday morning are being hailed as heroes. “I would call it a true act of both strength and heroism,” said Const. The incident took place just after midnight at Vye Road and Sumas Way, after a 2009 Dodge Ram pickup collided with a 2007 Pontiac G5. MacDonald said police will be recommending impaired driving charges against the 26-year-old female driver of the Dodge.

He said it appears that the Pontiac had a green light and was heading north on Sumas Way when it was T-boned by the Dodge, which was travelling west on Vye Road. The impact sent the
Pontiac into the ditch, trapping the four female occupants. Police and bystanders jumped into the ditch and flipped the car onto it side. Speaking at the scene, Const. Paul Walker said
the water had seeped about halfway through the car. MacDonald said the rescuers were putting themselves at risk, due to the total weight of the vehicle and occupants, as well as the unsteady ground they were standing on. Three of the occupants of the Pontiac, including the driver, were 21 years old, and the fourth person was 19. Two of them were taken to Abbotsford Regional Hospital for abrasions and soft-tissue injuries, and one was airlifted to a Vancouver hospital with suspected back and head injuries. The Dodge contained two passengers – a 27-yearold man and a 21-year-old woman. Neither they nor the driver had to be taken to hospital. All seven people involved were from Abbotsford.

A Canadian Tire manager pulled a homeless man from a fire to safety on Sunday night in Abbotsford. The incident took place just before 9 p.m. in an empty lot behind Canadian Tire – located on Garden Street – and bordered by Simon Avenue. The manager, James Cunningham, had spotted flames coming from a tree and grabbed a fire extinguisher. When he got to the area, he found the man, pulled him to safety and put out the flames, which were coming from a mattress. “I didn’t even know he was there at first. I saw
fire so I grabbed a fire extinguisher and went to go put it out and there was this (man) in the fire,” Cunningham said. Fire crews were called to the scene following a report of a brush fire. “When our crews arrived, they found that there was also a homeless person that was also involved with the fire,” said Assistant Fire Chief Dave Rivett. The victim, who had been using the area as a camp, was treated on scene and was then taken to police cells for the evening due to his high level of intoxication. It is believed that the fire was caused by smoking materials.

4 a.m. when it was hit by a 2003 Chevy Silverado travelling west. The collision sent the Chevy down an embankment. Police arrived at the scene and searched the area for the driver of the Chevy, expecting to find that he had been ejected from the vehicle. Officers and a police dog searched the scene, but could not find the
person. A short time later, they discovered that the 20-year-old Abbotsford man had been taken to hospital. Const. Ian MacDonald said police are still trying to determine how he got to hospital. He said investigators are looking at possible impaireddriving charges against the driver of the Chevy.

A fire that took place early Saturday morning at a problem home in Abbotsford is being investigated as a possible arson. The blaze occurred at about 12:30 a.m. at a duplex in the 2600 block of Jasper Court. When Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the top level. Firefighters were able to stop the fire from spreading to the bottom floor. Although the lower level
did receive some minor water damage, occupants of that suite were able to return at 3:45 a.m. Residents of the top floor were not able to return due to heavy fire and smoke damage. One occupant was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, and another was transported to hospital for treatment. Const. Ian MacDonald said the fire has been deemed suspicious, and the Abbotsford Police Department’s (APD) major crime unit is investigating. “Given the number of persons in the home and the proximity to other residenc-
es, there was the potential for greater damage and injury,” MacDonald said. The residence on Jasper Court has been the scene of several previous police incidents, including a drug bust in October 2008 in which three men were charged after methamphetamine and a replica handgun were seized. The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) has launched an investigation into allegations that its officers damaged the tents of homeless people and used pepper spray in areas where those tents were placed. Const. Ian MacDonald said the allegations were made during a meeting last Wednesday of the Abbotsford Social Development Advisory Committee (ASDAC). That meeting was held in response to the incident in which City of Abbotsford staff dumped chicken manure on a homeless camp on Gladys Avenue on June 4. In the case of a homeless person who may not have access to a phone, MacDonald suggests they come to the police department in person or ask someone to assist them. Ross Siemens, a business owner in downtown Abbotsford said the downtown business association is split on the proposal. “The rezoning is going to be the big hurdle. The business association has worked very hard to fight against becoming the (Vancouver) Downtown Eastside and we’ve made a lot of progress,� said Siemens. He said the project will be better if those issues can be worked out.

The B.C. Human Rights Tribunal has dismissed a complaint from two parents who alleged their four children were discriminated against, on a religious basis, while they were in foster care. The parents claimed that the kids, who were raised as Catholics, were treated as Mennonites while in care. They cannot be named due to a publication ban that protects the identity of the children. The couple alleged that their children were forced to wear Mennonite clothing and “pray in the Mennonite way�; were told that nonMennonite religions were evil and all nonbelievers would go to hell; were not allowed to participate in a midnight mass; and were forced to attend Mennonite services. In his reasons for decision, tribunal member Murray Geiger-Adams stated that the foster parent was able to refute each claim and provide context for each issue.

For example, she denied ever saying that other religions were evil. The foster parent had signed an agreement, through the Ministry of Children and Family Development, that she not pressure the kids to embrace her Mennonite beliefs and that she respect their right to participate in the religious activities of their choice. Affidavits from social workers stated that although the foster parent was open about her Mennonite beliefs, “she was also respectful of their beliefs,� the tribunal documents state. Geiger-Adams said the parents’ allegations involved secondhand reports, “devoid of context,� that were filed months after the children’s placement ended in the foster home. Geiger-Adams dismissed the complaint, saying the parents “have no reasonable prospect of establishing, on a balance of probabilities at a hearing, the essential facts underlying their complaint.� He also denied the respondents’ application to have costs awarded.

Island is no place for trash
A layman’s look at the ecosystems of Vancouver Island reveal important estuaries, water-source mountain tops, prime agricultural land and vital shorelines. Not the ideal place to locate a facility to burn garbage, let alone import the stuff from Metro Vancouver. The topic came up at a recent Strathcona Regional District board meeting. It’s not an imminent thing, but the trial balloon has been floated. Metro Vancouver needs a place to dump its garbage. Burning that garbage to create energy sounds like a reasonable goal. Just not on the island. Much like the Fraser Valley Regional District, many on the island see an incinerator as bad news. To be clear, there is no specific deal or site named for Vancouver’s trash. And this could end up being much ado about nothing, at least for island residents. But a shortlist of 10 companies bidding to build a new wasteto-energy plant has been announced
and a potential site for the incinerator could be Duke Point in the industrial heartland of Nanaimo. That’s a little too close to home and scary. We aren’t concerned about the fact these are early days in this discussion. We don’t care if there really is no plan to barge Vancouver’s garbage to the Island. We offer our early and strident opposition to this idea right now, even if it was just a trial balloon. The upsides? Some will say jobs, some will say the creation of a renewable energy system, some may even say that if the garbage was trucked rather than barged, and used our ferry system, it could boost the bottom line and save B.C. Ferries. All of that is rubbish, pun fully intended. It would be rude to identify specific communities and regions of the province here and now, but if anyone is asking, there are other B.C. locations for Vancouver’s garbage. – Black Press

Other Hand It was a weekend of opportunities lost, and opportunities won. I’d originally planned to enjoy a couple of fat fish from a secluded lake, a campfire under the stars and perhaps an adventure or two. Came Friday and a downpour, with indications of that continuing for another day or two. Trip cancelled. I’d also overlooked the fact that it was Father’s Day on Sunday . . . not that it is high on my radar; my sons have their own children to fete them. And there isn’t a Grandfather’s Day that I’m aware of – the marketing wizards who promote other such “days” probably realize bottles of good single malt scotch are out of the price range of grandkids.
However, the weekend wasn’t quite the bust I’d anticipated because on Saturday morning I received a call from a daughter-in-law pointing out my eldest granddaughter was playing ball Saturday afternoon and wondered if I’d like to take in the action. I arrived just as the game began, joined the family in the stands and watched first-base-playing Taylor make a couple of outs. I also learned that this wasn’t “just a game” but the final of a tournament of 12-year-olds vying for rights to participate in the provincial championships. That heightened the interest. The game see-sawed back and forth through the innings, and in the fifth it was a tie. That held through the sixth and, in the seventh, with Taylor’s team having last bats, it got downright exciting. The first girl was struck out, with my granddaughter on deck. A swing and a miss on the first ball, the second one pinged off the bat and Taylor made it to second. Her best buddy on the team was up next, and she got a base hit to
right field. With wild cheers from the stands, Taylor’s long legs took her from second to home and the game, the tournament and the provincial playoffs were in the bag. Seeing the thrilled smile on her face,

* * * Last week I wrote about the lack of, or perhaps disregard for, communication that results in foolish acts (for example, the dumping of chicken manure on a homeless site) that seems pervasive in our city. I began with an example of painting lines on the roadway past my house the day before the asphalt (and lines) was ground up and new pavement laid. For the record, the city doesn’t take over maintenance of the roads of what was formerly “Sumas Mountain” until July 8 of this year: expiration date of the five-year agreement by the province to provide such roadwork following amalgamation of the “unorganized territory” of the mountain with the city. Therefore, and comforting I’m sure to the municipal bureaucracy, the left hand not knowing what the right is doing isn’t necessarily the exclusive domain of city hall.

letters Get a grip, people Despicable act I’m afraid I don’t understand why we are having a debate about farmers trying to scare off birds to protect their crops. If we don’t allow farmers to grow our food, what do we eat? Where will it come from? Who gets the economic benefit? Do we shut down airports because planes make
noise? Do we shut down the Trans Canada Highway because traffic makes noise? Get a grip, people. We need what our farmers produce – that’s the bottom line. Maybe the complainers shouldn’t have bought houses next door to farms.

Matsqui Evangelical Lutheran Church celebrated its 110th anniversary on June 2. Bishop Gregory Mohr of the BC Synod presided. Former pastors, members and friends enjoyed a catered lunch and entertainment following the worship service. In the early 1900s, new immigrants – many of them Scandinavian – settled on Matsqui Prairie, mainly a farming area. They soon began holding church services in their homes with circuit-rider preachers. Their first formal meeting was on July 5, 1903. A constitution was drawn up and the name Goshen Evangelical Lutheran Norwegian

Congregation of Matsqui was chosen. Sunday school was held in the local school house. In 1904, building of the church began
on donated land. The church was finished and dedicated in 1920. Tragedy struck in 1948, when the Fraser River flood-
ed and moved the church off its foundation. The congregation was able to restore and remodel the church, and worship resumed in 1949 with the first resident pastor K. O. Kandal. In 1953, the church was given its current name, Matsqui Evangelical Lutheran Church. On the 50th anniversary, a commemorative magnolia tree was planted which still blooms every spring. The church celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2003 with the theme To God Be the Glory. The congregation is involved in supporting local and international charities. Services are held every Sunday at 10:30 a.m.

Butorac appeals murder conviction Previously found guilty of killing two women

Aldergrove serial killer Davey Butorac is appealing his conviction of killing two women. Saying that Butorac poses “a real danger to the safety of the community,� a B.C. Supreme Court judge sentenced him to life in prison with no chance of parole for 23 years in February 2011. A jury found Butorac guilty of second-degree murder for inflicting a brutal bludgeoning and strangling death to Abbotsford’s Gwendolyn Jo Lawton, 46, in
March 2007. Her body was found dumped down an embankment at Pemberton Hill in Abbotsford. Butorac was also convicted at the same trial of seconddegree murder in the July 2007 beating and strangling death of 50-year-old Sheryl Lynn Koroll in Langley. Her body was found at a Langley City concrete plant. Both women were sex-trade workers and struggled with drug addiction. His appeal was heard Wednesday in the B.C. Court of Appeal, but a deci-
sion has not been reached on whether Butorac will get a new trial. Butorac is still facing trial on a third murder charge. He is accused of the murder of Margaret Redford, 47, of Aldergrove. Her body was found in Bertrand Creek in Aldergrove on May 20, 2006. At the time, Butorac was living with his father in a townhouse complex a short distance away. Butorac doesn’t have a criminal past. His parents described him as loving in their let-
ters to the court. There was nothing in Butorac’s background – no abuse or drug issues – that
might explain the degree of rage and violence he displayed in killing the two women, said Crown

The Abbotsford Youth Commission (AYC) presented its annual URoc Awards to several groups and individuals on Wednesday afternoon. The event took place at the AYC youth centre at Abbotsford Recreation Centre and was followed by a community appreciation ice cream social. The awards have been presented since 2002 in three categories: Youth
Awards, Youth Friendly Adult Awards, and Youth Friendly Businesses and Organizations. “We really want to thank you. Raw milk challenge brings contempt conviction Greg KNILL Black Press
Two men found guilty of civil contempt for distributing unpasteurized milk from a Chilliwack farm will go to jail if they do it again, a B.C. Supreme Court justice ruled last week. Michael Schmidt and Gordon Watson were both handed three-month suspended sentences for defying an earlier court order prohibiting the distribution of raw milk from the Prairie Central Road farm. They had argued that because the
milk was being offered as a “cosmetic,” and labeled “not for human consumption,” the court order prohibiting the distribution did not apply. However, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Randall Wong, said there was
little doubt what the two men were up to. Said Wong in his ruling released Thursday: “In this case, distributing raw milk as a purported cosmetic product was patent lip service and ruse to distribute raw milk for human con-
sumption.” The case stems from an earlier injunction granted to Fraser Health to shut down a socalled “cow share” program initially run by Alice Jongerden. Called “Home on the Range,” the operation paid its share-
holders dividends in the form of raw milk and raw milk products. In 2010, Fraser Health sought and received a permanent injunction against Jongerden, arguing she had breached the Public Health Act by pack-

Ernie was born in a Matsqui farmhou se less than three months after World War One ended. He was a boy in an era without plumbin g and electricity, living with his parents, brother and sister in a home heated by wood and lit by candles. It was a simpler time in the nowdefunct community of Ridgedale, an area that used to be north Matsqui, near the Fraser River. It was settled by Swedes and Norwegians between the late 1890s and the early 1900s.

The natural twang in his voice made his transition from alternative rock to country easy. “I am having the time of my life to be honest,” said Smith, as he described how blessed he feels having made the transition. “The support from the country community has been mindblowing. Also I’m in the driver’s seat with this project and that helps me create a good balance in my life.” When asked how he feels about performing locally, Smith said, “it’s great to be able to see so many familiar faces. It’s not very often I can get all my friends and family together in one place.” Dallas has teamed up with Rodney Clawson, a Grammynominated songwriter, and Chris Tompkins (Carrie Underwood) to create a new album which is expected to be released in early 2014. The new MCC Centre on Gladys and Cyril will house thrift shops, MCC program ofÀces, the Material Resource Centre, Ten Thousand Villages and more.
Since its beginning in 1920, MCC has followed Christ’s call to welcome strangers and reach out to those who are hungry, thirsty, ill or in prison. Today, MCC continues to respond to basic human need and work for peace. The MCC Thrift Shops have supported this ministry for more than 40 years. Today we have 10 MCC Thrift Shops in BC, sustained by 900 volunteers that generate over $1.5 million each year. Across North America, over 100 Thrift Shops and thousands of volunteers generate $13 million each year for the work of MCC around the world. The first thrift shop in BC was started in Clearbrook by a group of volunteers in 1973. As the thrift shops grew in crowded rented space, volunteers and MCC leadership developed a bold vision. In 1989, they built the MCC Plaza in Clear-
brook with space for two thrift shops, a Ten Thousand Villages store, a cafe and the MCC BC home office. With 26,000 square feet of space, many thought it was too big but within a few years it proved to be too small. Eventually, the offices were relocated to Marshall Road. Ten Thousand Villages moved to another location and the cafe was turned into a staff room. The Furniture store moved across the street and the MCC Abby East Thrift Shop opened on the east end of town – both of these shops in rented space. Now, MCC BC has purchased land on Gladys Avenue where we will build the MCC Centre – a new building that will accommodate the MCC Furniture & More and the MCC Abby East Thrift Shops. The Plaza will continue serving in Clearbrook. The new building will

With five wins and three runner-up finishes, Abbotsford’s Nick Taylor utterly dominated the Vancouver Golf Tour this spring.
When Nick Taylor turned pro in 2010 following a spectacular amateur career, Canadian golf fans may have anticipated a quick ascension to the PGA Tour. The Abbotsford golfer had, after all, had claimed the No. 1 spot in the Royal and Ancient’s world amateur rankings in 2009, and he’d won the Ben Hogan Award as the NCAA’s top male golfer in 2010. But the reality is, golf is a fickle sport and the pro game is a grind. As such, the link between potential and success
is rarely a case of immediate gratification. “There’s such a high number of people trying to make it to the PGA Tour, it’s harder than people understand,� noted Fraser Mulholland, commissioner of the Vancouver Golf Tour. “The guys that are that good will eventually get there, just not necessarily in their first or second years.� In the early going of his third full season as a pro, Taylor is showing signs he’s poised to take a major step forward. The 25-year-old has absolutely dominated the Vancouver Golf Tour, a local
developmental circuit. Taylor reeled off five victories in a row in one stretch, and also had three runner-up finishes where he lost in a playoff. Last week at the Saputo Vancouver Open, the tour’s flagship event, Taylor finished at 14 under par through three rounds, only to fall in a threeman playoff which saw South Carolina’s Chris Epperson emerge victorious. In all, he collected over $24,000 in VGT winnings this spring, plus a $3,500 bonus for finishing atop the order of merit in the six-tournament major series. Continued on A28

An offensive explosion in Victoria on Sunday afternoon was the highlight for the Abbotsford Cardinals during a week which saw them drop two of three games. The local B.C. Premier Baseball League squad fell 7-0 to the red-hot Langley Blaze at DeLair Park on Thursday. Blaze pitcher Braeden Bouchey notched a no-hitter, striking out 11 Cardinals over seven innings while issuing two walks. The Abbotsford club got its offence back on track in the first game of a road doubleheader vs. the Victoria Eagles on Sunday, winning 9-5. The Cards racked up five runs in the top of the sixth inning to break the game open, and junior callup Benji Wieler ignited the offence with three RBI. Eagles pitcher Riley Edmonds quieted the Cardinals in the second game of the day, surrendering just three hits over seven innings as Victoria salvaged a split with a 4-0 win. "That first round couldn't have ended quick enough," Hadwin said on Friday via his Twitter account, @ ahadwingolf. "This golf course is pretty tough when you get into the rough."

Outlaws battle back The Abbotsford Outlaws 99B girls softball team won the consolation final at a tournament in Mount Vernon, Wash. last weekend. The Outlaws went 2-1 in the round robin to earn a spot in the gold bracket for Sunday’s playoffs, but they dropped a 10-4 decision to the Sno Co Express and were relegated to the
consolation side. But the Abby squad bounced back, beating the Bellingham Bash 13-3 in four innings via the mercy rule, and they earned a measure of revenge vs. Sno Co in the consolation final with a 13-9 win. Lynsey Evans hit two home runs in the victory, while pitcher Kyra Watson went the distance on the mound.

His scoring stats have been even more impressive. In 14 rounds during the VGT majors, he finished a total of 72 under par – an average of 5.14 strokes under par per round, with a scoring average of 66.4. “I don’t care where you’re winning – if you’re winning or coming close, you’re obviously going to be gaining confidence,” Taylor acknowledged. The way Taylor separated himself from the pack on the VGT was impressive, but Mulholland said it’s hardly a surprise. “We all kind of figured he would be doing this,” he said. “It’s just taken him maybe a little bit longer than guys would have expected after his amateur career. I just think he’s back on track with where people thought he would get to, and it’s just incredible to see.” Taylor now aims to continue his VGT momentum as the PGA Tour Canada schedule heats up. This is his third year on the circuit, formerly known as the Canadian Tour, and he turned in a solid performance in 2012, finishing 11th on the order of merit with a trio of top-10 finishes. He’s got bigger dreams this season after a host of sweeping changes to the tour. With the PGA Tour now overseeing things – hence the name change – the circuit will now award fully exempt status on the secondtier Web.com Tour
to its order of merit champ. The secondthrough fifth-place finishers will also gain status on the Web.com, while sixth through 10th place will advance directly to the final stage of Web.com qualifying school in the fall. Having a clearly defined path of tour progression – from PGA Tour Canada to the Web.com Tour to the PGA Tour – is a departure from years past, when Q-School was the primary means of advancement. Taylor, who failed to make it through Q-School in three attempts, believes the new system is better-suited to his strengths. “You can move up to the next level by playing well for a season, where before it was essentially one event at a time (at Q-School),” he explained. “If you weren’t playing quite well enough, you had to wait another year, which sucks. “I like having more events (to decide things). I feel I’m more of a consistent player, where over time my results will come.” Taylor attributes his recent hot streak to his putting. He’s had a good vibe on the greens since playing a mini-tour event in South Carolina back in April. “It’s kind of a feeling, just a small thing that I can’t really describe,” he said. “When I haven’t been hitting it great, I’ve been able to salvage rounds with my putter. When I’m hitting it well, I’ve been able to shoot some low scores.”

Utica Comets will be Heat seeking new play-by-play voice Canucks’ AHL affiliate Dan KINVIG

The Vancouver Canucks announced last Friday that their American Hockey League affiliate will play out of the Utica (N.Y.) Memorial Auditorium in 201314, and will be known as the Utica Comets. The local management group in Utica, Mohawk Valley Garden (MVG), is led by former NHL goaltender Robert Esche and longtime AHL owner and executive Frank DuRoss. “We look forward to a new AHL affiliation and the development of our prospects in Utica, New York,” Canucks president/ general manager Mike Gillis stated in a press release. “There was a strong interest in bringing an AHL team back to Utica and a real commitment to provide a positive environment for the growth and success of players in the Canucks system.” Rumours were rampant back in the spring that the Canucks' farm team was going to move to Abbotsford to replace the Heat, who were said to be ticketed for Utica. But the Canucks were unable to come to an agreement with the City of Abbotsford, and on April 22, the city confirmed that talks had broken down, ensuring that the Calgary Flamesaffiliated Heat would return for the 201314 season. Mayor Bruce Banman left the door open to future talks between the NHL franchise and the municipality, though, and it's thought that the Canucks would still like to bring
their AHL affiliate to Abbotsford eventually.
The Abbotsford Heat are in the market for a new play-by-play broadcaster, after parting ways with Ryan Pinder last week. Pinder spent the past two seasons calling Heat games, and added the director of communications title in 2012-13. Pinder, who was guest hosting on Sportsnet 960 The Fan radio in Calgary last week, told The News
its communications department, and it’s not decided at this point whether they’ll continue to combine the play-by-play and media relations duties in one position. “We’re very thankful for the part that Ryan played in helping our franchise,” Walter said. “We want to do a complete evaluation of that area and the roles . . . And then we will build a process to hire a play-by-play person.”

DANALLANKO Linda It is with both sadness and bittersweet joy that we announce that on June 10, 2013, Linda (Loewen) Danallanko passed away into the presence of her Lord and Saviour. Born to Martin and Sara Loewen, on April 6, 1942, in Calgary, Alberta, Linda and her family moved to Abbotsford in 1946, where she spent her formative years. Following her graduation from high school, Linda’s education included two years at Bethel Bible Institute, Registered Nursing training at Vancouver General Hospital, and a BSc in Nursing from University of British Columbia School of Nursing. Her nursing career included time in Vancouver at a home for dysfunctional children, a brief employment in Merritt, a two-year volunteer term in Haiti with the Mennonite Central Committee, and a long career in Public Health nursing in Summerland and Penticton, from which she retired in 2007. It was also in Penticton that Linda met and married Ed Danallanko, the love of her life, with whom she celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary in March of this year. She was a vibrant and energetic part of her large and loving family and all were blessed by her kind words and generous ways. Following her internment at Lakeview Cemetery, a memorial service of remembrance and celebration will be held on Saturday, June 22nd at 1:30 pm at the First Baptist Church in Penticton - a place where Linda was actively involved in worship and leadership. It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Bob Nelson at the age of 80. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family, his wife of 52 years, Trudi and his daughters Debbie (Gord Easton) and Diane (Alan Mortimer). Bob will also be greatly missed by his grandchildren Patrick Easton and Tia and Rachel Mortimer. He was predeceased by his daughter Jill in 1979. Bob was a pioneer of Matsqui Prairie having farmed and lived there his whole life. OTT, G. Eleanor (nee Black) Eleanor went to be with the Lord May 20th 2013. Eleanor was born Dec. 14, 1916 in Beausejour, Manitoba. She graduated from Prairie Bible Institute, she received her nursing degree from the “Medicine Hat School of Nursing”. In 1945 she married Frederick Ott. She leaves to mourn her daughters Noreen (Del) Bryant, Judy (Arthur) Amendt, her sons, Gerry (Gwen) Ott, Tim (Doris) Ott, eight grandchildren, three great grandchildren, her brother Hal (Carmen) Black and also her dear friend Orville Smith. Memorial Service will be at 2pm on June 22, 2013 at Seven Oaks Alliance Church in Abbotsford

Hong was born on December 13, 1960 in Vietnam. He passed away on June 14, 2013 at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre. Hong is survived by his only child, Michael. Hong immigrated to Abbotsford, BC in 1994, where he raised his son Michael. Hong was a hard worker, who was employed by Dogwood Fur Farms for the past two years. He was a quiet man and a devoted father. He would put others needs before his own, which is why he was known affectionately as “Bo”, or Father, to many people. He will be greatly missed, but always remembered, by his loving son Michael, family, and many friends. Kay passed away on June 14, 2013 at the Menno Hospital. She was born in Kronsthal Village Gretna, Manitoba on July 31, 1924. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 49 years, Nicholas in 1992. She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Sharron and Peter Masztalar, Kenneth and Bonnie Rempel, Warren and Dianne Rempel and Nola and Glen Emery. She had 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. She is also survived by her brother Robert (Jo) Hiebert, her sister Violet Sawatsky, her sisters-inlaw Sally, Tate, Neta Smith and Ellie Rempel all from Manitoba and many nieces and nephews. Kay and Nick were married in Winnipeg, Manitoba on June 19, 1942 at the 1st Mennonite Church and except for a brief period during the war, they lived in Winnipeg until 1958 when they and their four children moved to Abbotsford, BC. Kay will be greatly missed by all her family and friends. She was known far and wide for her doughnuts, cinnamon buns and chicken soup. She loved to cook and bake for her family and all their friends. She will be sadly missed. We love you Mom. In lieu of flowers a donation to the MCC would be appreciated. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 22nd, 1:00 pm at Personal Alternatives at 3070 275A St., Aldergrove. The family also wishes to thank all the staff at the Menno Hospital for all their kindness.
