Two bears were shot and killed Monday morning after fighting viciously in a Coquitlam driveway. An Edward Street h o m e o w n e r, n e a r Minnekhada Regional Park, caught the battle between the two large male bears on video; they can be seen on their hind legs, clawing at each other, the ground underneath them spotted with blood. “There was blood all over the pavement and bear fur scattered everywhere, quite a bit of it,” said conservation officer Cody Ambrose. Coquitlam RCMP and members of the

Conservation Officer Service (COS) arrived at the home at about 10 a.m. They spotted one of the animals, which had a bloody face, in the front of the house. When they searched the area, they found the second bear in the back yard, and both were destroyed. “The two bears were acting aggressively and it was of concern to the COS because then we had two injured bears in the neighbourhood,” Ambrose said, adding the bears were not only fighting on the doorstep of a home but also didn’t want to leave the area.“For public safety we needed to dispatch both bears.” Ambrose said it’s normal for bears to assert their dominance in the wild but it was unusual for them to be doing it in a residential area and so close to a home. see BEARS COMMON, page 7

A review by TransLink has flagged under-performing bus routes that may be targeted for “service optimization” to wring more efficiency from the transit system. For a couple of years, transit planners have strategically trimmed hours from some routes at times when buses roll by mostly empty and added more service to routes they think could carry more riders. Beneficiaries have included the 99 B-Line in Vancouver, where a 10% increase in service has been added to reduce overcrowding. And an allnew White Rock-Langley route was also created to meet demand from passengers who couldn’t reasonably get between the two cities on transit. Overall, TransLink says the strategy has helped it increase the number of transit trips taken by 3.4% while the average cost per trip dropped. But while the system has gained, there have been winners and losers. Richmond lost 5.5% of its service hours — a change planners say is due to ongoing “right-sizing” to reflect the 2010 introduction of the Canada Line. And the northeast sector of the Lower Mainland — including the Tri-Cities — lost 2.3% of its bus hours. The biggest gains were south of the Fraser (excluding south Delta), where 3.5% more hours were added, the North

An exhaust leak is being blamed for making several bus drivers ill and forcing TransLink to take 25 recently commissioned community shuttles off the road in the Tri-Cities. The buses were ordered from a dealer six weeks ago and were only recently introduced to the fleet when they were pulled out of service on Thursday afternoon. Derek Zabel, a communications person with TransLink, said mechanics and the manufacturer have been looking into the matter ever since and have determined that an exhaust leak emanating from the engine is responsible for the problems. “We had some drivers getting headaches and feeling sick,”he said.“Our operators have been noticing a smell and for safety precautions we pulled the fleet off the road.” On Monday, eight of the vehicles were back in service and Zabel said TransLink was closely monitoring the situation. In the meantime, the transit authority has cobbled together a fleet of extra vehicles and backup buses to keep service running on schedule in the area. Zabel said some delays occurred last Thursday night but by Friday morning, everything was running smoothly. Mechanics at several depots throughout the Lower Mainland are looking at the buses but Zabel could not say when the vehicles will be back in service. “We’re working really hard to get to the bottom of it,” he said. “We want to make sure these buses are 100%.” gmckenna@tricitynews.com

Clarke, Galt speak out for NCR Coq. woman and cousin defend federal legislation

Family members of a woman whose children were murdered by their father in Merritt in 2008 are speaking up in support of the Not Criminally Responsible Reform Act. The act would change the release reviews for those found not criminally responsible from annual hearings to hearings every three years, which Darcie Clarke’s family members say will correct an imbalance in the current review system. “What is being proposed is what we — the families of victims all across Canada — have been asking for,” reads

of mental disorder for the murders of his and Clarke’s children, 10-yearold Kaitlynne, eight-yearold Max, and five-yearold Cordon. Clarke and Galt have worked with Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Attorney General Rob Nicholson and Canadian Heritage Minister James Moore, a Tri-City MP, on the bill for nearly five years. They say the changes will bring victims’ rights into balance with those of people found not criminally responsible. The bill passed its second reading in the House of Commons late last

month with a vote of 242 to 34 and will now be reviewed by a committee and reported on before its third reading. If the bill basses its third reading, it gets royal assent and becomes law. “This is a bill that reminds the courts and provincial review boards that victims matter. In fact, it is more than a reminder that victims matter — it will hopefully soon be the law,” Clarke’s and Galt’s statement says. The bill also addresses imbalances in the legislation surrounding those found not criminally responsible, including that there is no legal obliga-

tion to notify members of the community if a high-risk offender leaves or escapes from a facility, and treating and classifying those with lengthy violent histories differently than those with mental disorders, the statement says. In 2011, the B.C. Review Board granted Schoenborn escorted visits into the community from the Coquitlam psychiatric facility where he was being held. That permission was revoked after opposition from Clarke’s family, who said she was living nearby. Schoenborn’s request to transfer to a psychiatric facility in Selkirk, Man. was approved by the B.C. Review Board in February but has yet to be carried out. Clarke’s family opposes that move as well, saying she has family in the Selkirk area.

Byelection decision in July continued from front page But while the pair had asked city council for leaves until Jan. 3, 2014 — the date when a municipality can legally forgo holding a byelection — councillors on Monday took a different route, saying they wanted to weigh the pros and cons of asking for the councillors’ resignations and holding a byelection instead. Council, which voted 5-1 to grant the leaves of absence until July 8, said difficult decisions had to be made since more than one seat is vacant. Top of mind is the cost of a potential byelection, a bill that added up to $142,000 — plus staff costs — in 2010 when Fin Donnelly resigned to become MP for New Westminster-Coquitlam. Council has already budgeted for a byelection and the city’s election reserve stands at $639,000. Still, byelection turnouts are typically poor. In 2007, when Louella Hollington quit, only 4.9% of registered voters went to the polls; three years later, the turnout was 7.5%, with referendum questions on the ballot. “When only 5% come out to vote, is that a good way to spend the money?” Coun. Craig Hodge asked. Hanging over the financial debate are comments made last week by Coun. Lou Sekora (who did not attend Monday’s meeting) that focused in on taxpayers’ dollars being used by his council colleagues for hotel

He suggested they could have commuted and saved the public cash. Besides the cost of a byelection, council also said it wanted to look at how other cities with now vacant civic seats are moving forward. About a dozen B.C. municipalities are also coming to grips with possible midterm campaigns. And many are seeking help from Premier Christy Clark’s new government, including asking for funding, Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart said. He plans to bring a motion before

council to lobby the government — via the Union of BC Municipalities — to change the Local Government Act to avoid byelections. Stewart is suggesting if a vacancy is created in the first half of the term, the candidate with the highest number of votes who lost should be automatically moved into the open council position; for the second half of the term, no byelection would be required. Coun. Brent Asmundson said the provincial government should pay the price as the parties recruited municipal candidates to run.

Adding to the debate is the extra workload that council will have to pick up if there is no byelection (see sidebar) and the need to maintain quorum of four councillors plus the mayor. Councillors Asmundson and Terry O’Neill took issue with the pressure Reimer and Robinson have placed on council — and with breaking their commitments to stay in office. Both recalled the Tri-Cities’ Chamber of Commerce all-candidates’ meeting in November 2011, when contenders were asked if they would serve the full three years if elected. “All 16 of us said we would not be vacating a seat on council to run in another election somewhere and yet we’re faced with two people who have done exactly that,” O’Neill said. Asmundson said there has been “angst in the community” about the level of commitment by city councillors given the past two terms have each seen byelections. “To me, when I run for council, I’m committing a full three years here,” he said.“If I want to run for federal or provincial politics, I would finish my term and take my chances, not having the security blanket of having this if I don’t get that.” Coun. Mae Reid voted against Nicholson’s motion to grant the leaves of absence until July 8, saying it is contrary to Reimer and Robinson’s wishes. jwarren@tricitynews.com

The city of Coquitlam is sending the local board of education back to school to face complaints about its plans to sell surplus land at an elementary school. On Monday, city council deferred a bid by School District 43, which wants to change the city’s official community plan (OCP) and rezone 1.26 acres at Parkland elementary. The cashstrapped school district plans to dispose of part of the site — at the corner of Como Lake Avenue and Poirier Street — to help pay for new schools. It is estimated the land sale would bring in up to $5 million for School District 43 plus generate development cost charges (DCCs) and 5% parkland funds for the city. According to the plans, SD43 intends to subdivide the site into eight single-family lots with a rear lane — an application that is deemed “tech-

Phone battery charge helped with search The Tri-CiTy News

Two women who went for a hike Saturday and were later lost in Belcarra Regional Park were located by Coquitlam Search and Rescue volunteers at about 10 p.m. “The trails in Belcarra Park are well marked but there are lots of old mountain bike trails that are not on any of the maps, and they got on one of those,” said SAR manager Michael Coyle. When the hikers realized they were lost at about 7:30 p.m., they called Port Moody Police, which sent the call over to Coquitlam SAR. Coyle said the women had parked at

Woodhaven Swamp, walked down to the beach and then along the Admiralty Point Trail before heading north up the hill and then back across towards their car. “But when we found them, they were on an unnamed trail one of our members used to run on. Actually, they weren’t even on the trail.” Coyle said the hikers simply made a few wrong turns but, fortunately, called for help. He also noted the women were not prepared for an emergency with adequate clothing, food or water, and were lucky to have been caught out on a relatively warm night. “On the good side,

their [cellphone] battery life was good and they stopped moving but they definitely could have taken a few things to make their experience a little easier,”Coyle said. The six SAR members were able to stay in touch with the hikers via text message and voice contact as they got closer. “It really does make a difference when you have the battery life on the phone,” Coyle said. “If their phone had died and we couldn’t talk to them, it would have been harder to understand where they were.” Rescuers reached the hikers at about 10 p.m. and everyone was out by 11:30 p.m. spayne@tricitynews.com

The intent of bylaw 4393, 2013 is to amend City of Coquitlam Zoning Bylaw No. 3000, 1996 to amend the medium-density apartment zones (RM-2, RM3) to allow density-sharing on comprehensive development sites containing more than one lot, and to implement several housekeeping amendments to the various RM Apartment zones (RM-2, RM-3, RM-4, RM-5, RM-6) and the C-7 Transit Village Commercial zone. If approved, the text amendment would: • Remove surface parking requirements within the RM-2, RM-3, RM-4, RM-5 and RM-6 zones, which are no longer applicable as all parking is required to be concealed; • Eliminate the height limit in the RM-6 zone, in order for this zone to be consistent with other higher-density zones (C-4, C-5, C-7) and the intent of the zone; • Introduce the density-sharing provision currently within the C-4, C-5, C-7, RM-5 and RM-6 zones to the RM-2 and RM-3 medium density apartment zones to provide greater design and zoning flexibility on multi-phased consolidated parcels and ensure that the density sharing provision is implemented consistently across all relevant zones; and • Amend the current density-sharing provisions of the RM-4, RM-5, RM-6 and C-7 zones to clarify that it is only permitted on adjacent lots when developed comprehensively by the same developer, as currently required in the C-4 and C-5 zones.

Syphilis rates in the Lower Mainland have spiked in the past year to the highest levels seen in decades. The highly contagious sexually transmitted disease, once thought nearly wiped out in B.C., is mainly being seen in men who have sexual contact with other men. Both the Vancouver Coastal and Fraser Health regions report their syphilis case numbers more than doubled from 2011 to 2012. Vancouver Coastal saw nearly 300 cases last year or 80% of the B.C. total. Fraser reported 67 in 2012, up from 27 in both 2010 and 2011. “We’re concerned about the increasing numbers in Fraser even though it’s not as bad as in Vancouver Coastal,” said Dr. Paul Van Buynder, chief medical health officer for the Fraser Health Authority.

Some researchers have pointed to the advent of mobile phone apps for easily organizing anonymous gay sex hookups. Van Buynder said he’s not convinced that’s the cause of the increase, noting gay or bisexual men seeking casual encounters have always been adept in finding each other. He is concerned that some men involved shifted to oral rather than anal sex out of a belief it would reduce their risk of HIV infection. “There was some reduction in the HIV transmission but it actually does nothing to decrease your syphilis risk,” Van Buynder said. He said the disease is one of the “great mimickers” because its symptoms can often be mistaken for bug bites or rashes, leading those infected to ignore it and spread the bacteria to others. “I’m concerned that our physicians may not

have seen this for a period of time,”he said. About 80% of new cases are among men who have sex with men — a category that includes both gay and bisexual men as well as other men who don’t identify themselves as such. Public health officials are urging men in the LBGT community to get tested for syphilis every three to six months and to practice safer sex. Other symptoms of syphilis include fever, swollen lymph glands and weight loss. Catching the disease early and treating it with antibiotics is far easier than suffering the untreated consequences — permanent blindness, hearing loss, deep bone pain, neurological problems and even death. here is no such thing as too much public consultation when it comes to selling school land assets. That’s why we support Coquitlam council’s decision to make School District 43 hold a public open house to let neighbours get a look at plans to rezone and sell 1.26 acres of surplus school property at Parkland elementary to generate $3 million to $4 million to help with new school construction. Arguably, SD43 has already done due diligence by sending out information and holding an open house (at Porter Street elementary). But could more be done? Yes. Schools are community assets and there’s a great sense of pride and possession. People aren’t thrilled with seeing school land sold off, even when the money goes back into public coffers. There is also a great deal of suspicion when governments propose to sell public assets — think of the concern about the future of the Riverview Hospital lands and, more recently, the controversy over the BC Liberals’ decision to include $800 million worth of unsold assets as revenue in its pre-election budget. Last fall, school districts were told that under the release of Assets for Economic Generation program, they could sell surplus land and reinvest the money in capital projects. It was also suggested they do so by the end of 2014, and the government would book the amount as revenue. At the time, SD43 was considering selling land at Porter Street elementary as well as Parkland but the Porter option was dropped. The picture for Parkland continues to be muddied by overall concerns about lands sales generally. It may be more work but no harm will be done by holding an open house to get a clearer picture of what Parkland’s neighbours think of land use changes. Do they accept the necessity of selling under-utilized assets for new, more valuable ones? Can they live with a little more density if eight more homes are built? These are questions an open house can ascertain. And it’s up to the folks who have to live with the changes to say whether they are acceptable.

Cleanup of MLAs’ expenses must continue BC VIEWS Tom Fletcher VICTORIA s she unveiled her new cabinet, Premier Christy Clark promised a“lineby-line”review of government spending to deliver a balanced budget this year. Statements such as this would have more credibility if politicians subjected their own personal spending to the same scrutiny. That’s still not happening in B.C. Expense accountability has come a long way in the last year, thanks mainly to the work of now-departed auditor general John Doyle, who swung the cobweb-covered door open on B.C.’s secretive Legislative Assembly Management Committee. Chaired by the speaker and run by senior MLAs from both parties, the committee had been doing pretty much whatever it wanted with MLAs’ expenses.

Doyle’s audit found that MLA credit card bills were being paid without receipts, part of a lax accounting system that included inaccurate bank records and inadequate management of the legislature gift shop and dining room. The operating budget of the legislature and constituencies runs to more than $60 million a year. Now-retired speaker Bill Barisoff asked the auditor to give a pass to the $119,000 annual allowance for each of the 85 constituency offices. Transfer amounts and payroll expenses were verified but constituency expenses were not, likely because these records weren’t kept either. I’m not suggesting there has been any misuse of public funds. The point is we don’t know and the notion of an“honour system”for politicians’ expenses has become unacceptable. A similar toxic tale has been unfolding in the Senate in Ottawa. It has its own secretive committee called the Board of Internal Economy, which was forced into the open after trying to sweep Senator Mike Duffy’s housing claims

under the red rug of the Senate chamber. Duffy has lived in Ottawa for decades, first as a TV host and then senator, but he decided the rules were loose enough that he could claim his summer place in Prince Edward Island as his principal residence. An audit has also found he was claiming living expenses in Ottawa while campaigning for the Conservatives back east. It turns out the key ingredient in an honour system is honour. This mess goes back more than a century in B.C. and Canada, and has its roots in the British Parliament, where MPs and Lords had a system of claiming all sorts of expenses, including construction of a“duck house” and maintenance of the moat around an Honourable Member’s castle. Many years ago, British MPs convinced themselves that they were underpaid and rather than create a public fuss by giving themselves a big raise, they would be able to top it up by claiming up to £250 at a time without receipts. Cheers! You can imagine how well that worked out.

As one observer put it, the system was not only open to abuse, it was actually designed for it. Here in B.C., the next step is obvious. If you go to the website of Alberta Premier Alison Redford, you can easily find the link to her detailed expense reports, itemized for travel, meals, hotel rooms and so forth. Alberta cabinet ministers provide the same disclosure. B.C. cabinet ministers’ travel expenses are now reported, but only as an occasional lump sum. As a result of Doyle’s revelations last summer, B.C.’s Legislative Assembly Management Committee now meets in public, with transcripts of proceedings available. But MLA expenses are still not itemized. Total expenditures are being reported on a quarterly basis, but with no detail to explain why some MLAs have much higher totals than others. It’s time to sweep out the cobwebs.

Perhaps the next best alternative is to re-assemble it next to the Pattullo Bridge, and use the Pattullo as a public park and bicycle path between Surrey and New Westminster. The Editor, Recently, my wife lost her cell phone but, at the time, thought she had merely misplaced it. We dialled the cell phone number from our house phone but were unable to locate the missing phone. H oweve r, a m a n named Lloyd, who had found the cell phone at the PoCo Farmer’s Market noted our home number from the call display and called to inform us. He informed us that he merely wished to return the cell phone to its rightful owner. We arranged a meeting and Lloyd returned the phone. He said that, had he not been able to contact us, he was going to go to a Telus store in order to determine the owner. Lloyd declined a reward and only asked that, in a similar situation, we would act appropriately. This, we assured him, we would do. Industry duels over future of recycling Mechanized garbage sorting is seen as a threat By Jeff Nagel Black Press

Several recycling businesses are urging Metro Vancouver to stand firm and refuse to allow a new mechanized garbagesorting plant to open in the region. Th e m i x e d - wa s t e material recovery facility (MRF) being built in south Vancouver by Northwest Waste Solutions is pitched as a way to process garbage after recyclables have been source-separated — waste that would otherwise be landfilled would be run through its whirring machinery to extract yet more usable materials. But critics within the industry doubt it will operate as billed. They expect Northwest would offer customers one big convenient bin to dump garbage and recyclables mixed together and leave Northwest’s $30-million MRF to sort it out. Opponents of singlestream recycling predict it will mean less material recovered at lower quality than source-separation, disrupting the existing recycling system. Approving a so-called dirty MRF that processes unsorted garbage would put existing green jobs at risk, Nicole Stefenelli of Urban Impact Recycling told Metro’s zero waste committee June 6. “A capital investment of this type would, in my view, put in peril the years of source separation and education and the infrastructure we’ve built in the region,” she said.

Emterra Environmental vice-president Ed Walsh said mixed-waste “dirty” MRFs are little different from a transfer station and leave no incentive for residents and customers to separate their recyclables. “Stay the course,” urged Paul Sellew, CEO of Harvest Power

He said Harvest Power has invested heavily in the region on the basis Metro will continue to increase waste diversion rates and gradually ban more material from landfills, including organics starting in 2015. Metro and Vancouver officials recently toured mixed-waste MRFs in California and Metro solid waste general manager Paul Henderson concluded in a staff report that such systems have low recycling rates — 10 to 15% of traditional recyclables are recovered, leaving behind large volumes of garbage. He said compost from such plants is dubbed “Hollywood compost” because it glitters with finely broken glass, plastic and other contaminants. Henderson also warned a privately run MRF here would threaten existing recyclers. Northwest Waste CEO Ralph McRae disputed Henderson’s findings. He argued Metro has been stymied in its efforts to get multi-family residential recycling rates above about 16% and that his MRF can recover more material, boosting the region’s overall recycling rate. “What he’s trying to do is make us the bogey-

man,” McRae said. “To be painted as some robber baron who’s trying to rip off the region and do bad things is not in keeping with our reputation or our history.” Some Metro directors lean toward giving the concept a try. “Why wouldn’t we want to make every effort to recover [additional recyclables from the waste stream] even if it’s only one%?” asked Vancouver Coun. Andrea Reimer. “Isn’t that preferable to burning?” Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan also asked if Metro’s aim is to improve recycling rates in whatever way possible or to reserve waste for either landfilling or incineration. Henderson argued the only way a privately run MRF could work is if it can send the resulting garbage stream out of region for cheaper disposal, dodging the $107 per tonne tipping fees Metro charges here. It was suggested Metro could operate its own mixed-waste MRF to sort more material from garbage, but Corrigan noted that would add more costs to the waste-handling system. The waste committee voted to have staff analyze the viability of using a MRF in a last-stage recovery effort while ensur-

ing regular source-separated recycling continues. Also contentious is Metro’s plan to block outof-region exports of garbage. Metro intends to require commercial waste haulers to take garbage to approved transfer stations or recyclers to stop a growing flow of apartment and business waste from being trucked to the FraserValley or the U.S. That outflow of waste threatens Metro’s programs because each load that goes out no longer contributes tipping fees that underpin the regional district’s waste and

recycling system. Loads hauled outside the region don’t have to comply with Metro-imposed bans against the dumping of recyclables either. Haulers who oppose waste flow control call it an unreasonable business restraint that aims to trap waste in the region to feed a new Metro incinerator. VICTORIA – Premier Christy Clark plans to call the B.C. legislature back into session by the end of June to begin debate on her government’s budget while she campaigns in a byelection. Clark chaired the first meeting of her new cabinet Monday, after she and the 19 cabinet ministers were sworn at a ceremony at Government House. She said the session will emphasize the same themes as the B.C. Liberal election campaign, balancing the budget and making the economy, not the government, grow larger. A by e l e c t i o n i n Westside-Kelowna will be announced this week, and Clark said she hopes to have a seat in the legislature by the end of July after losing VancouverPoint Grey to the NDP in the May 14 general election. Veteran Richmond East MLA Linda Reid is to be nominated for speaker of the legislature. Clark said there will be no new legislation introduced in the summer session, aside from an updated version of the February budget.

Great step forward for heart patients New technique eliminates the need for open-heart surgery among the elderly, prolonging life and saving money for the medical system

ost 93-year-olds aren’t good candidates for the rigours of open-heart surgery. But when such an elderly patient was presented to Dr. Albert Chan and his surgical partner in the cardiology department at Royal Columbian Hospital, Dr. Daniel Wong, they weren’t prepared to let her go home to await death from the stenosis that prevented the aortic valve to her heart from opening and closing properly. Elderly, high-risk patients who might not be able to withstand major heart surgery are now able to get a new lease on life with Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation, a minimally invasive procedure that allows doctors to replace a diseased valve using a long catheter tube inserted through an artery in the groin. Developed about eight years ago and widely adopted by hospitals in Europe, use of the procedure in Canada is still largely limited to elderly patients who are at high risk for conventional surgery because it’s so new and the longterm durability is still being established. Dr. Chan says RCH monitors all its patients who’ve gone through the procedure to establish longterm results. It is hoped that the new valve will last as long as the surgical valve, if not longer. “In 10 years I expect the valve procedure will become a standard approach to treat degenerative aortic valve disease,” he says. That’s good news for prospective patients with aortic stenosis, half of whom would otherwise be expected to die within a year of developing symptoms. To save them, the team guides a six-mm catheter up through an artery to the patient’s heart from an incision in the patient’s groin. A new specially designed replacement valve that is attached to a flexible stainless steel mesh is then sent up the catheter where it is implanted over the existing

valve in a beating heart. It starts working right away, and the patient can usually go home a few days after the 90-minute procedure. This quick turnaround also eases the burden on the medical system, says Dr. Chan, adding, “When people recover faster, they can enjoy a better quality of life, lead more productive lives and the cost of hospitalization is markedly reduced.” While the procedure is also available at five hospitals around the province, Dr. Chan says being able to offer it to patients closer to their home, in the province’s busiest cardiac program, is another benefit to the patients. “For the elderly, traveling downtown is a big deal,” says Dr. Chan. “It’s better to have care closer to home, where everything is done under one roof.” That’s something his 93-year old patient was thankful for, as she was able to walk out of the hospital three days after undergoing the procedure with complete recovery of her heart and valve functions.

Explore Italy from the comfort of the Tri-Cities J

une 2 was Republic Day in Italy; on that date in 1946, a popular referendum was held to decide on the form the country’s new government would take. Ever since then, it has been a day to commemorate the birth of the modern, postwar, democratic Italian Republic. What better time (that is, if you cannot afford to travel there) to celebrate Italy through books. Armchair travel to Italy is possible both with Eyewitness Travel: Italy and A Traveller’s History of Italy. Like all Eyewitness travel books, the one on Italy is lavishly illustrated and packed with loads of fascinating historical information on each

Italian region. The standard introductory section includes an overview of culture and society followed by a detail historical timeline running from about 900 BC to the present. Then follows a calendar of yearly festivals (the northern strawberry festival in June) and sports tournaments (the Italian Grand Prix in September). With each region, Eyewitness in-

cludes examples of food, the local geography and well-know landmarks. Maps, transportation and accommodations information round out the rest of the book. A Traveller’s History of Italy, by contrast, has very little in the way of pictures but makes up for it in detailed and comprehensive historical information for those who want a deeper sense of the nation’s past. More seductive Italian images are available in Frances Mayes’ In Tuscany and Frederica D’Orazio’s Rome: Then and Now. Mayes (author of Under the Tuscan Sun and Bella Tuscany) features the kind of lush photographs of Tuscan life that many have come to expect from this wellpublicized region. There are rustic farms, villages, poppy fields tinted gold

in the sunset, town market scenes and, of course, food alongside recipes. Rome: Then and Now, part of the series of books comparing the past and present of major cities, like the others juxtaposes historical photographs of famous landmarks with those from the present day. Other than the contrasts between black and white and colour photographs, the other notable thing is how many historical landmarks have lasted so long, indeed how little has changed, unlike in Then and Now books about North American cities. Share drug ed. program running on Wednesdays through July 24 Share Family and Community Services’ Alcohol and Drug Program is hosting a free education series that runs through July. The program runs Wednesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Share (2615 Clarke St., Port Moody) and is open to everyone in the Tri-Cities and will have important information for those who have

an alcohol or drug problem, or for those concerned about their use. It will help those people affected by others’ use to understand addicts and addictive behaviour. There is no cost for this group, whose format consists of a video, a brief presentation and open discussion. Topics will vary from week to week as outlined below:

• June 12 (today): Anger — understanding your anger and learning how to manage it more effectively. • June 19: Trauma — How substance misuse often occurs with people who have experienced childhood abuse. How these experiences may cause relapses or continued misuse. • June 26: Mental ill-

ness, depression and addiction — understanding the links between the mental illness and addiction will be tonight’s goal. • July 3: Stress — learning how to cope with little and big problems without using. • July 10: Relapse prevention — discussion on the psychological, emotional and

Nominate PoCo’s top green thumbs for annual awards PoCo Garden Awards deadline is July 13 Port Coquitlam residents are being encouraged to show their appreciation for their neighbours’ efforts to beautify the community by nominating them for

a Pride of PoCo Garden Award. There are a wide variety of categories to choose from, including residential front yards, residential backyards, multi-family gardens and balconies. There are also two new categories added this year: heritage gardens and vegetable and food-pro-

ducing gardens. The annual awards recognize PoCo green thumbs who take it upon themselves to beautify their city and encourages citizens to take pride in their community. Gardens are judged by members of the PoCo Garden Club, an event sponsor and city representatives.

Port Moody Centennial Events At Golden Spike Days Come Enjoy “A Day on The Water” - July 1st • Dragon Boating: Dogwood Nothin’ Dragon Boat team and the Rocky Point Abreast in a Boat will provide free rides in their 45 foot long dragon boats from 1pm to 5 pm at the Rocky Point Pier on the east side. A static display including a dragon boat will be in the festival site as well as an interpretive display. Visitors wishing to go on the water will need to sign a waiver located at the marshalling tent near the gazebo of the pier where they will get their life jacket and paddle. The rides will last approximately 30 minutes. • Rocky Point Sailing: The sailing club will be on the water between 1pm and 3pm with demonstrations in capsizing, sailing with spinnakers, races and sailboat tours at the dock. A static display will be found on the festival grounds. • Old Mill Boat House: OMBH is the umbrella organization for all water sports at Rocky Point. They will be on site supporting the various teams at a display tent on the grounds. • Rocky Point Rowing Club: The team will have a showing of their sculls at dock side during the day. • Rocky Point Kayak: The Kayak display will be held at dockside near their building as well as a roll over demonstration at the pool.

Musicians sought for new youth orchestra By Janis Warren The Tri-CiTy NeWS

ancouver has one. So does Surrey, Abbotsford and Chilliwack. And Delta shares theirs with Richmond. But when it comes to youth orchestras locally, the Tri-Cities has gone without. Until now. N e x t we e k , R e g Quiring — a Coquitlam resident, music teacher and a violist with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra — will hold auditions for young classical musicians wanting to be part of a larger sound. The new Coquitlam Youth Orchestra (CYO) will start in mid-September and, should there be enough successful candidates, will be split into two: the juniors — made up of musicians aged 10 to 13 with a minimum Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Level 3 — and the seniors — composed of musicians aged 14 to 18 with at least RCM Level 5. Quiring said he has heard from many frustrated parents and music teachers who are forced to travel outside of the Tri-Cities to have their child or student in a youth orchestra. “It’s a long distance, not to mention an expense, for them every week,” he said, adding, “I’ve been thinking about forming a youth orchestra for many years and I think Coquitlam is ripe for something like this.” Growing up, Quiring played viola with the Calgary Youth Orchestra. Today, he talks about the benefits for youth to be part of musical organization, where peers can practice and socialize.

Coquitlam resident Reg Quiring, who has a music school and plays viola with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, will hold auditions on June 21 at the Evergreen Cultural Centre for the Coquitlam Youth Orchestra, which is he launching in September. “It’s a great atmosphere from the moment you step in the room,” he remembered. “It really inspires kids.” Quiring went on to have a successful career in music after high school. He founded and headed up the Suzuki viola program at the Vancouver Academy of Music, played at festivals and, with his wife, pianist Rosemary O’Connor, established the Quiring Chamber Music School, which runs a summer camp in Vancouver. Their Quiring Chamber Players — along with prominent guest artists — have become a New Year’s Eve fixture at the

Evergreen Cultural Centre for classical music lovers. As a principal violist, Quiring has performed with the VSO, the Vancouver Opera and the Quebec Symphony. The father-of-three, who has conducted for a short term with the Vancouver Academy Orchestra and a UBC string ensemble, said he envisions the inaugural year with the CYO to be a little bumpy given that it’s a new experience for him and the players. Still, “we will work out the kinks.... It’s a big task and I think it’s going to be great. I think it’s going to be fun.” Many music parents have al-

ready expressed an interest in helping out (though more will be needed) with fundraising, organizing and administration. As for the young musicians, they are required to be at rehearsals — with their instruments — every Friday until next June: from 4 to 5:30 p.m. for the juniors and 6 to 8 p.m. for the senior group, in Evergreen’s rehearsal space. Quiring said he plans to start with classics from Beethoven and Tchaikovsky before moving into contemporary works; he would even consider conducting a piece from a local composer, if suitable, he said. grounded, Quiring hopes to host public performances like at Coquitlam Town Centre Park and Rocky Point Park. “It would be really great to imitate the VSO but at a younger level,” Quiring said. “I think it’s something the Tri-City audience would love to hear and see.” • Auditions for string, wind, brass and percussion players is on Friday, June 21 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the rehearsal room of the Evergreen Cultural Centre (1205 Pinetree Way.) Street banners made by students at two Port Coquitlam schools last year will be on sale next weekend. The colourful artwork created by young artists at Kwayquitlum middle and Riverside secondary — with the help of Diane Moran — will be available for purchase at The Outlet at Leigh Square Community Arts Village (behind city hall) on June 22 and 23, from noon to 4 p.m. The 48 beautification banners will be sold for $5 each and can be had on a firstcome first-serve basis. And the left-over banners will be recycled into shopping bags and other objects by non-profit groups, the city stated in a news release. The students’ banners were designed in class from February to April of 2012, using a paper-cut collage process; each piece was photographed and made into digital files to be printed on the fabric. An artist’s view of transit By Janis Warren The Tri-CiTy News

The daily commute to and from work — as well as to other Metro Vancouver destinations — on public transit intrigued artists Pamela Cambiazo, Lena Tan and Kate MacDonald a few years back. The trio had known each other through a community artists workshop and, late one night, Cambiazo and MacDonald connected via social media, chatting about transit and how it creates small communities that quickly dissolve as the passengers leave a bus, SkyTrain, SeaBus or West Coast Express car. Three years ago, they mounted an exhibit about public transit, titled Fleeting, at the Britannia Community Services Centre, in Vancouver, that was well received. And tomorrow (Thursday), they will continue with their art display in Port Coquitlam to coincide with the city’s public consultation for a new master transportation plan. About 30 pieces — in various media — will be in the PoCo exhibit from MacDonald, Cambiazo, and Tan as well as from guest artists Michael Asti-Rose, Joy Hanser, Ksenia Kozhevnikova, Je s s i e M c N e i l a n d Natalie Onuška. But MacDonald’s work has changed since the Britannia show, where she included a cut-out of Wonder Woman as part of a 3D installation. The response she got then prompted her to take the subject to a new level: The East Vancouver resident photographed herself in a Wonder Woman costume at bus shelters. MacDonald said travelling by bus, SkyTrain and SeaBus can be a different experience than commuting by West Coast Express, which passes through the TriCities. For the first three modes, people tend to keep to themselves because of the forced closeness; however, with West Coast Express, MacDonald said she has spoken with travellers who, because of the schedules, take the same car at the same times. “There is more of a community feeling,” she said, adding, “It’s interesting how people connect depending on where they are.” • The opening reception for Transitory/ Transit Story: Art and Public Transit in the Lower Mainland is on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Leigh Square Community Arts Village (behind PoCo city hall). It will include a talk with

Since its inception three years ago, the Trevor Wingrove Memorial Tournament has grown to attract teams from as far away as Alberta and Vancouver Island. Now Les Wingrove, whose son Trevor lost

his battle with cancer in 2010, is hoping to take the annual lacrosse event international. Several American clubs expressed an interest in playing last weekend’s tournament but could not make it due to scheduling conflicts. Wingrove believes it is highly likely the will be able to attend next year. “There are box programs in California, Wa s h i n g t o n and Colorado that are interested in coming out,” he

said. “It would be nice to see that happen down the road.” Last weekend’s tournament saw Coquitlam Minor Lacrosse dominate the podium, with local clubs taking two gold and a silver medal. The Coquitlam Adanacs won the bantam division playoffs following a 10-5 victory over the Westshore W h a l e r s t h a t s aw Thomas Semple lead the champions with a two goal game.

The club defeated Nanaimo 18-7 last week and followed up with their second win of the season last weekend, when they narrowly defeated the New Westminster Salmonbellies 8-7 at home. Coquitlam’s Ryan
