RIDING BOUNDARY CHANGES
MPs not content Lunney, Duncan say residents also don’t like the proposal NEIL HORNER news@pqbnews.com
James Lunney says he is fairly certain he’s going to run in the next federal election, but he’s not exactly sure where he’ll be campaigning. “I’ll make the decision when the time is right,” Lunney said when asked if he’ll run. “I have every intention of running at the present time.” The question though, is where he would be serving, if elected. That’s because the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission has recommended that another riding be added on Vancouver Island, which means a shuffling of the deck for prospective MPs. The new riding, one of seven new ones proposed for the province, would be called Nanaimo-Ladysmith and would result in this riding losing 50,000 voters in the south and a gain of 25,000 in the north. While he’s pleased about the extra representation for both the Island and the province, Lunney isn’t particularly enamored with the specific proposal. In particular, he doesn’t like losing the portion of Nanaimo that is home to his constituency office for the past 12 years and he doesn’t like the plan to add Powell River to the riding. “There is enough population on Vancouver Island to justify seven ridings, with 105,000 per riding. Nanaimo-Alberni has 127,000 so the report calls for a push from the south and a pull to the north,” he said. “I did a lot of pushback with (Vancouver Island North) MP John Duncan. We argued this is a disproportionate distortion for the electorate on the Island.” See NOT ACCEPTABLE, page A8

VAN ISLE 360 SAILBOAT RACE
A sailing start to remember JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com
More than 200 people jammed the breakwater to watch the local leg of the Van Isle 360 sailboat race Sunday at French Creek Marina. Winds were whipping from the north down the Georgia Strait into the bows of the boats and the faces of the sail-
ors at the mass start of about 40 vessels. The sun was shining and local residents were lined up with their cameras to watch the start of this leg of this America’s Cup-style, Black Press-sponsored race, with six divisions and classes of crafts expected to pull into Comox after four-five hours of intense sailing. stArtinG Point Guilty plea results in 13-year sentence Oceanside RCMP say a Nanaimo man has received a 13-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to manslaughter in relation to the July, 2011 death of Errington resident Douglas Trebble . The Oceanside RCMP and Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) investigated the homicide of 47 year old Douglas Trebble. Police say as a result of this exhaustive investigation, charges were laid against 37 year old, Clayton Donald Brewer of Nanaimo on November 27, 2011. On May 31, 2013, Clayton Brewer pled guilty to manslaughter in Nanaimo Supreme Court and received a 13-year prison sentence. “I am very proud of the dedication and work shown by all the officers who worked on this case”, S/Sgt. Brian Hunter, detachment commander of the Oceanside RCMP, said in a news release. “In a case like this, the support of our partners such as VIIMCU and forensic specialists is key to ensuring a successful outcome, and maintaining the safety of our community.” — NEWS Staff

Not exactly the ideal image you want to see walking the streets of your home town, but there were about 80 such zombies-for-a-day during a Zombie Walk on Saturday evening in Parksville. For more photos of the event, please visit our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/PQBNews
Zombies invade Parksville
JOHN HARDING
editor@pqbnews.com
It seemed like some harmless fun, a bunch of locals dressing up like un-dead brain eaters and parading on a few blocks of Parksville. However, some of the 80 men, women and children who participated in the Zombie Walk on Saturday evening apparently spent a lot of time and money on make-up and props, so much so that some of them, dare we say, looked real. Could it be that a few actual zombies found a way to sneak into the crowd and hide in plain
sight? Nah, zombies aren’t real. Right? Event organizer Dan LaRocque had this to say about the event on Facebook: “Way to go everybody, great outfits, great spirit and a fantastic turn-out. Favourite comment overheard: ‘Wow, Parksville just keeps getting better and better’. Which is the whole point, after all. Now, what shall we do next?” For more than 20 photos from the event, please go to our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/PQBNews

Scott Gilbert crews the Steve Travis-skippered 48-foot Flash, which calls Seattle its home port. Flash was one of eight similar boats built in the 1990s and used as trainers for the America’s Cup. This is Flash’s fifth year in the Van Isle 360. Gilbert was asked what makes this race special for him. “Once you do it, you tend to get hooked,” said Gilbert. “It’s just too much fun. To see the scenery you do, you join this travelling community for a couple of weeks, what’s not to like? We’ve had good luck with this race, we’ve won it a couple of times. Yeah, we like to win, yeah we like to beat the other guys, but it’s all about the total experience. Like they say, a bad day of sailing beats a good day at work any time.” Flash was third across the finish line during the Nanaimo-to-French Creek leg of the race Saturday, the first leg of the two-week race. She covered the 22.1 nautical miles of that leg in just over four hours and 13 minutes. Icon, a 66-foot

craft from Anacortes, Washington, skippered by Kevin Welch, was the fastest boat Saturday in 3:44:45. Dark Star, a 44-foot boat skippered by Olympic medalist Jonathan McKee and also from Seattle, was second in 4:06.38. There are a number of divisions and a handicap system like golf, so Dark Star was the top point-getter in the big boat category during the Nanaimo-to-French Creek leg on Saturday. The 580 nautical-mile course is run in 10 legs of varying length. After racing out of Nanaimo harbour, the fleet proceeds north around Vancouver Island stopping at French Creek, Comox, Campbell River, Hardwicke Island, Telegraph Cove, Port Hardy, Ucluelet, Victoria and finishing back in Nanaimo on June 22. PArKSVILLE COMMUNITY PArK
New fitness component officially opens Saturday AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
With a long list of community contributions and support the Parksville Lions Club will officially open their wheelchair accessible outdoor gym at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 15. The new facility is located in Parksville’s Community Park beside the Lions’ famous Ventureland playground and water park. The 10 pieces of durable outdoor fitness equipment allow for dozens
of exercises for people of any age and fitness level and may be particularly useful for parents waiting for their children in the playground, Lion building chair Duane Round has pointed out in the past. Rain or shine the public is invited to join MP James Lunney, MLA Michelle Stilwell, Parksville Mayor Chris Burger and Lions members for the official opening, complete with hotdogs and pop for the first 150 people.
rDN DEVELOPMENT
Proponent wants to provide cash in lieu of parkland Developers proposing an eight-lot subdivision on Drew Road in French Creek want to provide cash instead of green space in their plan. The subdivision on Drew Road abuts French Creek and will require no re-zoning, which means local residents don’t have a chance to provide input through a formal Regional District of Nanaimo public hearing. There is a public information hearing regarding the cash-for-green-space proposal Wednesday, June 12 at Oceanside Place starting at 7:30 p.m. “They (the developers) already have their zoning in place,” said Kristy Marks, a planner with the RDN. “The information meeting (Wednesday) is just related to parkland.” Marks also said the proponents still need to go through the development permit process and she would not guess on when work on any homes for the eight lots would begin. “It is relatively early (in the process),” she said. — NEWS Staff

CARVING FOR A CAUSE: Rhonda and Chris Coughlin-Mutch were front and centre at Cruiser’s Cafe in Whiskey Creek on Sunday as they created some of their evocative chainsaw carvings as a fundraiser for the family of Val Bellwood, who were burned out of their home in a fire last weekend. The fundraiser, said organizer Cheryl MacDonald, was a success, with the carvings raffled off for donations.
BEACHFEST AND SAND-SCULPTING COMPETITION
Back to the future: amateur division returns There will be two types of amateur teams: corporate and family/friends AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
While Beachfest attracts over 90,000 people to Parksville beach every year, organizers are always looking for ways to keep locals entertained, and returning, to the region’s biggest event. Trish Smith, manager of the Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition, said this year they are introducing an amateur competition sponsored by Big O Tires on August 3. “The sand sculptures are a great draw for tourists, but not necessarily for locals
— they might think I’ve seen that, done that — so we’re giving people a reason to come down again,” she said of the amateur team contest, which will be held on the actual beach during one of the lower tides of the summer. Two types of teams, corporate and family/friends, will be comprised of two to six people with space for up to 40 teams, supporters and spectators. Each team will get two 20-foot by 20-foot squares, one for building and one for staging and support. The corporate teams are adult only, but the family and friend teams can be of any age as long as they are all amateurs. Smith said they may allow one professional on a team — she points out they know who they are since they would
likely be former Beachfest competitors — “but they can’t stack the whole team with pros.” Competitors will be allowed to begin setting up at 8 a.m., with the contest running from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. followed by judging and award presentations before the tide washes them away. There were amateur competitions earlier in the competition’s 30-year history, but not since it was revived in its current form 14 years ago. Entry is $30 and there will be plenty of fun and awards, though Smith admits it’s more about the fun and community engagement, so the prizes will not be huge cash awards. Smith also encourages potential amateur competitors to take advantage
of their drop-in lesson on the opening weekend July 13 and 14 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. “It’s perfect if you want to join the competition but have no idea how to do it,” she said of the casual, two-day session that will have three professionals available to guide and teach anyone who wants to pick up some of the tricks of the trade. While the opening weekend lesson is free and drop-in, people need to sign up for the amateur competition, which Smith figures will likely fill up before it runs Aug. 3. Sign up online at www.parksvillebeachfest.ca, where they are also looking for local artists to sign up for the Art in the Park market July 27 and 28. Watch The NEWS for more on that.

Parksville is one of 100 North American cities in an online competition to win one of 20 main street paint makeovers from Benjamin Moore. The city is one of five in B.C. in the Main Street Matters contest supported by the paint company and actor Brad Pitt’s Make it Right charity. “This is a great opportunity for the city, we want everyone to make sure they vote each and every day,” said Parksville mayor Chris Burger who became aware of the burgeoning social media campaign late last week. “People are pretty connected now online and there have been other campaigns like this for school playgrounds that have been pretty successful,” Burger added. He suggested that every day that anyone doesn’t vote is like a lost vote in what
could be a very useful part of the city’s downtown revitalization efforts. “It’s a really good initiative and it will bring a lot of good attention to the city,” said councillor Peter Morrison, who as liaison to the Parksville Downtown Business Association was an early proponent of the campaign that started May 16. Benjamin Moore will provide all of the paint and supplies for all the facades along with colour experts to consult on the best choices. “This investment we’re making in communities around North America is core to our business and to who we are,” said David Melançon, Chief Marketing Officer of Benjamin Moore. “Main streets make us who we are and we’re proud to honour that with this effort.” The other B.C. communities on the short list are Nelson, Kamloops, Penticton and Courtenay. Visit www.paintwhatmatters.ca to vote once a day until the end of June 30.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY: Bosley’s Pet Food Plus celebrated its second anniversary Saturday and the Bengal kittens, one of which being held above by nine-yearold Tanis Paradis of Cassidy, were a big hit with young and old alike, as was the Bosley’s birthday cake.
Brad Wilson is looking for a few good families. The Kwalikum Secondary School teacher is hoping some local people will step forward to host some of the Japanese students coming here for two weeks starting July 14. While it’s part of the school district’s International Student Program (ISP), Wilson said because this is only a twoweek commitment, it’s a lighter version of the ISP’s five-10-month program
and may give local families a chance to see if having a teenager from a faraway country will work for them. “It’s a unique introduction to homestay programs,” said Wilson. “They (host families) can get a feeling as to how it might go.” Twenty-two Japanese students aged 16-17 will be coming to Parksville Qualicum Beach on July 14. Host families — it’s one student for each household — are responsible for providing three meals a day and for transporting their visitors to KSS each day, where teachers and students will be running programs for the Japanese teens, said Wilson. “We want them (the students from
Japan) to experience Canadian life,” said Wilson, who teaches Japanese at KSS. There is no requirement that says local families have to have anyone who speaks Japanese. “These kids, they will have some basic English,” said Wilson. “Also, body language works well.” As of last week, Wilson said he had lined up 10 of the 22 families he needs to host the Japanese students. He said host families are reimbursed $30/day for the time the Japanese students stay in their homes. Next March break, some KSS students from Grades 11-12 will be going to Japan on a trip led by Wilson.

Lunney said Powell River residents have a much stronger connection to the Sunshine Coast than they have to Vancouver island and that’s where they should stay. As well, he said the flow of much of the riding is to Nanaimo. Duncan and Lunney proposed an amended boundary that would leave Powell River where it is and keep a chunk of Nanaimo with this riding. “The ball has been bounced back to the boundary commission and they have 30 to 60 days to respond,” Lunney said. “It’s a big change, but we’re arguing for something more reasonable. We don’t want to split Courtenay-Comox — the citizens have very strongly indicated that — and Powell River doesn’t want to be connected to Vancouver Island.”

ALS WALK: More than 100 people, including MLA-elect Michelle Stilwell, took part in the eighth annual Mid-Island Walk for ALS on Sunday in Parksville, and they were sent off in style from city hall by a piper. One of the walkers, Serge Vaillancourt, is trying to win a contest that could result in the local ALS Society receiving $10,000. Duncan said the proposal as it stands is not acceptable to him, or the people who voted for him. “The latest recommendation by the BC Boundaries Commission, which split the Comox Valley in half and removed Powell River from the Sunshine Coast and added it to Vancouver Island North, met with considerable opposition in the impacted communities,” Duncan said in a press release. “This proposal is contrary to the obvious communities of interest within the Comox Valley and the Sunshine Coast. I understand that the commission’s task was a difficult one, but in the end they were solving a Lower Mainland problem at the expense of Vancouver Island.”

Understanding Parksville’s Fire Service The Parksville Volunteer Fire Department recently conducted an online survey intended to assist in the review and update of their strategic plan. The public was asked to provide comments and suggestions for improvements to services they wish to see and also provide input related to community expectations of the department. Survey results may be found on City and PVFD websites. Responses showed the PVFD needs to do a better job in providing information about their role in the community and their activities. In this space over the next four months, we will endeavour to provide that information. Should you have questions or comments, contact the department directly or email communications@parksville.ca and we will try to answer them here. Next month we will explain the range of services provided by the department. In BC there are about 350 independent communitybased fire departments protecting the lives and property of residents through the provision of fire, rescue and emergency services. The PVFD serves 17,000 residents (20,000 peak summertime) in the Parksville Fire Protection Area which includes the City of Parksville and contract areas within the RDN - San Pareil, Morningstar, Columbia Beach, French Creek, Fourneau Road and the Forever Green Estates. There is no mandatory legislative requirement in BC for a community to have a fire department and essentially all decisions related to the fire/rescue service are made at the community level. The City of Parksville is responsible for fire department services in our
Construction continues in earnest along the Highway 19A corridor with the underground utilities nearing completion. Road works are underway and weather permitting will be substantially complete by the end of June. There will be no disruptions during summer months and peak traffic along 19A. Once again we remind residents to slow down, obey traffic signs and follow the instructions of traffic control personnel. We do appreciate your patience during construction.
Parksville’s Community Park
Resurfacing of the sports field will begin the first week of July with with reopening of the field expected by the end of October. During this time, the field will be closed to the public. The significant rehabilitation and improvements will provide a safe and efficient playing space for many years. The Community Park has been extremely busy the past few weeks with baseball tournaments, youth “World Cup of Soccer” tournament, 26 baseball and 30 softball games a week, beach volleyball four nights a week with 400 players, new pickleball league, lacrosse leagues, tennis, hikers, cyclists and more. Use of City facilities continues to increase and it is encouraging to see this participation in the local sporting scene.

community, including evaluating the need for services, providing necessary resources and assessing the capabilities of the department. The cost of fire/rescue services is borne by residents. While fire suppression will continue to be the most visible part of PVFD responsibilities, the department does much more than fight fires. In addition to protecting our community, the department responds to motor vehicle incidents, residential and commercial alarms, burning complaints, hazardous materials incidents and provides rescue services, medical first response and other public services such as public education and mutual aid to neighbouring departments. As well, Council is mandated to provide fire inspections of hotels and public buildings in the municipality as required by the Fire Services Act. At the heart of the PVFD is a commitment to community service. The department is dedicated to providing the best possible customer service to the residents of the Parksville Fire Service Area.
Sunray Stairs Project
Located at the north end of Sunray Road, this project will provide safe beach access for Parksville residents by replacing the existing difficult trail to the beach with an aluminum staircase. The first phase to begin in late June involves pile foundation installation and once the piles are in place, pile locations will be surveyed to produce the drawings to fabricate the staircase sections. There will then be a delay while the staircase sections are fabricated offsite with completion by early September. Cost of the project is $150,800.

Smell the salmon?
I
t’s that time of year when it’s easy — dare we say encouraged — to put away the squabbles of the winter, to embrace your neighbour and our visitors. The important issues remain, but the sun and sand and countless fun, fulfilling events are happening throughout the region for the next two or three months. It’s time to show our best side, to volunteer, to enjoy the place we live and the people who live here. The debate over Parksville’s official community plan, or the suitability of a five-storey condo complex in the heart of Qualicum Beach village centre — these will not and cannot just go away. It’s our hope, however, the warm weather and great events in front of us will force us all to park any nastiness, to take some time to smell the roses — or a freshly-caught salmon. Is this a naive, utopian attitude? Perhaps, but we ask our readers to grant us some leeway today because we’re feeling positive and pumped about the present and future of Parksville Qualicum Beach. The Zombie Walk in downtown Parksville weirded us out a bit this past weekend, but at least it was an oddly positive, fun-based gathering. Far be it for us to suggest these people need a hobby (oops, perhaps we just did). The Show and Shine coming up this weekend in Qualicum Beach will have that beautiful village humming with activity and positive energy. It would be difficult to find a community that does a better job than Parksville celebrating Canada Day. And Beach Fest isn’t far away. Yes, residents of Parksville Qualicum Beach, it’s our time to shine. All of the great events staged in our region usually need volunteers. If you aren’t committed already, consider lending a helping hand. Wouldn’t it be neat to be working side-by-side with a neighbour, a person you absolutely disagree with in relation to development or politics, and enjoying the experience? We are a family, in a sense. We can work things out in-house, sometimes in a heated manner, but when company comes, we put our best face forward in a united manner, eager to help those in need or support local business and show the world the charm of our people matches the beauty of our surroundings. — Editorial by John Harding

Letters Oil change increase
The idea of ‘Ambassadors of used oil’ (June 4 edition of The NEWS) is a great and overdue. But the problems with used oils could be much less when the carmaker would give up the unfounded oil change intervals. In Canada, the carmakers recommend a oil change at 6,000 km or three months. This is nonsense. In Europe, the same carmaker recommends, for the same cars, with the same engines and the same oil, an interval 15,000 km or once a year. The only difference is, that in Europe you can drive much faster with more stress to the engines. My advice is to increase the oil change intervals to a reasonable time frame and the problems with recycling of used oils would be much less than today. Wilfried G. Weber Nanoose Bay
salmOn sign time It’s that time of year again — time for Mid Vancouver Island Habitat Enhancement Society (MVIHES) to remind residents to place their yellow salmon signs on the boulevard again. The yellow salmon indicates that the property it sits on is “Salmon Friendly,” that is, these residents do not water their lawns or use chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides because they want to protect salmon, their drinking water and the ecosystem. We live in a Mediterranean climate where an extended period of drought in the late summer is a natural occurrence. Other parts of the country may experience thunder storms and drenching rains

that will keep those lawns looking green all summer. Here, our grass will go dormant for lack of rain. Our creeks, rivers and aquifers do not get recharged during this time. If we choose to ignore the natural cycle and unnecessarily increase our use of water in the summertime we can put our iconic salmon at risk. Salmon need water and they need watercourses that are free of harmful chemicals from lawns. represent electOrs As a resident and taxpayer of Qualicum Beach, I find it very difficult to understand how three council members, who were duly elected to represent the views of the residents, can arbitrarily decide what is in the best interests of all. The vast majority of residents have expressed a valid concern re: the proposed, five-storey building, and the waiving of the development costs involved, so, surely, in any democratic community, there should at least be a referendum so the taxpayers the council is elected to represent can express their opinion. The proposed new building will not be bringing in the new families that we so badly need, but will be catering to older people coming to experience the joys of living here on the Island. We are indeed fortunate to live in such a beautiful place and, although progress is necessary, the decision regarding such a major change at this particular venue

never gOOd enOugh A recent letter writer, Max Kellerman, proposed this (rhetorical?) question in relation to coal deposits on Vancouver Island: “Would we not be better off to keep what we have right now and save it for future generations?” His question raises this question: What principles will we use to decide which future generation will get to use these resources? Having studied this question, I have never found a useful set of principles to help us decide which period, now or future, is the optimal-use period. If Kellerman has this information, I would appreciate his help by sharing it with us so we can all use the the principles to help us consider our options. In the absence of a response to this reasonable request, we will have no option but to conclude Kellerman’s question is merely a tactic to delay the decision to approve the use of this resource at this time, with no real future use being expected nor would it be tolerated. Kellerman’s tactic posing his seemingly reasonable suggestion is, in my opinion, basically dishonest. His question implies a acceptable future use when no future use would be acceptable to him. I challenge Kellerman to produce his set of principles that will permit us to determine the appropriate-use period.

letters An utter wAste (Editor’s note: what follows is the writer’s submission to Parksville city council regarding the city’s draft OCP and is being published as a letter to the editor with the writer’s permission.) The draft official community plan (OCP) is not an improvement over the previous one. Under the guise of sustainability and with the appearance of inviting public commentary it has achieved neither aim for its contents excludes any foundation for the former and its outcomes are the antithesis to our residents’ very wishes. Its section on sustainability is mere lip service to the idea with neither valid basis for operation, process for analysis of changes made, nor consequence for failure to adhere to this by law. The many hours put in by OCP committees to develop a civic aesthetic and plan to begin the basis of reconciling human activity within the context of our natural system has been preempted and foreclosed by council’s small lot zoning which apparently passed during the OCP review process. What small town atmosphere can be achieved here within the context of tripling density in residential areas willy-nilly throughout our town? How can this OCP be a benefit to the vast majority of residents when their voice has not only been ignored but bylaws have been put in place that precludes any possibility of residents’ wishes being attained? The cost of two civic surveys, one prior to the official community plan process and one towards the end of the OCP review has been a waste of our tax dollars. For the surveys’ outcomes evidently were not what council wished to hear nor was it prepared to act upon what was registered by some thousands of our residents who took the time to carefully consider the dozens of questions in the hope that their submissions would be an active democratic act. Council and civic staff’s actions, in my opinion put themselves more on a footing equal to emperor rather than that of public servant. By retaining a model that is intellectually fraudulent (the three legged stool one) council is in fact commenting on how they value this by-law. Clearly not at all! MOUNTAIN BIKE HYBRID BMX NEW & USED
One can question the integrity of a council that knowingly uses a model that has no basis in reality and has been dismissed world wide by ecologists. Was the consultant, time and effort to this entire OCP review process simply a form of window dressing to allow council to represent the wishes of about one tenth of one per cent of our residents while apparently ‘listening’ to all those concerned? To achieve so little at great expense to produce a document that reflects the aims of so few — one can only conclude that it was an utter waste of money! Yet, council in its wisdom intends to keep raising our taxes about three per cent per year. No doubt this is necessary because it will need more of our money to continue to find ways to pull the wool over our eyes. Sam CoSCo Parksville
LeAdership needed For the Town of Qualicum Beach, who is driving the bus on Council, where is the leadership? What seems like a small change to the Urban Containment Boundary in reality is a very big deal. The proposed changes to this boundary have huge implications for the future development in the Town of Qualicum. This boundary has prevented urban sprawl and has focused the development of the town. It has created the unique village atmosphere that so many of our residents enjoy and cherish. Our mayor needs to give us some direction. Mayor Westbroek, you need to start driving the bus and show us some leadership. You can begin by giving us your vision of Qualicum Beach, now and in the future. Rob DunCan Qualicum Beach

ident of the Echo Players, that one of their lead actors was unable to perform due to a badly infected throat. Instead, and in her place, Lynn Beamond would be playing the part script in hand during the entire performance, and at very short notice. The whole of the cast pulled together and the performance went off with a minimum of hitches. Len Mustard’s hilarious portrayal of Teddy Brewster, and Jim Currey as the eccentric and doddery ‘plastic surgeon’ gave the audience lots to laugh at, and they were my particular favourites. Here’s wishing Helen-Margaret Randall all the best for a speedy recovery and thanking the Echo Players — both the cast and crew — for a job well done. aliSon bunning Parksville

Food bAnk heLper I would like to suggest those of use who can afford to consider adding a grocery item for our local food bank when we grocery shop. All of the local grocery stores have a bin for the food bank adjacent to the check-out counters. My husband put two items in the bin at one of the grocery stores recently. We presumed there had just been a pick up, as the bin was empty. However, we were in the same store two days later and noted that nothing at all had been added to the food bank bin. That is what prompted me to write and ask your readers if adding something to their grocery lists for the food bank is something they would consider doing.

That’s not surprising, considering she has been the association’s president for the past 20 of those years. “We do all kinds of things,” she said. “We have crafts and singing groups and spinning and sewing groups ... all sorts.” She’ll be front and centre when the association holds their 40th anniversary celebration on June 30 at the Bradley Centre. During those four decades, the association has promoted the interests and welfare of seniors in the area, although when they started, their main focus was on seniors living in Coombs. “When it started it was mostly Coombs people who were involved and it was called the Coombs Hobby Pensioners Association, but it changed in 1982 because they recognized that people were coming from Bowser, Parksville, Qualicum Beach and the surrounding areas as well,” she said. “Even the
president came from Bowser, so it seemed appropriate to change the name.” It should come as no surprise the celebration is taking place there, because the creation of the Bradley Centre is likely one of the group’s proudest accomplishments. “They started small in 1973 with just a few pensioners in Coombs and they rented a hall at the agricultural grounds that wasn’t finished yet.” she said. “They finished it and bought some equipment and then started in with the crafts, everything from wood crafts to flower arranging, photography, sewing, knitting, weaving and cribbage.” Photo suBmittEd By PEnsionErs AssoCiAtion The hall didn’t fit the bill Volunteers of all ages worked hard to make the Bradley for the group though, so Centre a reality in Coombs they began looking at their options for a more perma- volunteers. bowling and a monthly lunnent home. O
nce in a while – about every six months or so – a letter drops through my mail slot addressed to Doctor Arthur Black. It’s true. I am a doctor. Have been for about the past twenty years. And it embarrasses the hell out of me. I don’t deserve the title of doctor. I couldn’t stitch somebody’s leg up or diagnose a sprain or decode an X-ray chart. Cripes, it’s all I can do to prise the lid off an aspirin bottle. But that’s not the kind of doctor I am. My field of expertise is much more useless than that. I am a Doctor of Letters. Summer is here and what’s better than reading a free book by the beach? The Town of Qualicum Beach and the Qualicum Beach Library have teamed up to offer Beach Reads, a free, take-a-book, leave-a-book program for the summer. “I’ve seen it work in other communities and it seemed like a great idea,” said Patricia Huntsman, cultural development and communication consultant for the Town of Qualicum Beach, who took the idea to library manager Eileen Gillette. Three bookcases — designed to look like birdhouses — are now located along the beach: one near the visitor’s centre, one near the Brant viewing area and a shorter one for children’s books by the Beach Hut. Gillette said she chose books with summer beach reading in mind, selecting mysteries, romances and other mass-market, pop-fiction books and magazines that were taken out of the library system. They are available for tourists and residents to enjoy throughout the summer and though they hope people will also leave some fun books to help continue a sort of community conversation, they do not have to leave one to take one. With the bookcases built and installed by the town and the books provided by the library, the women hope the cooperative project is a nice addition to the global free lending community. Beach Reads will be available until the end of September. Call 250-752-6121 or stop by for more information.
Suite deal mulled
Following the completion of a background study on secondary suites as a form of housing in the Regional District of Nanaimo’s Electoral Areas A, C, E, F, G and H, the RDN board has now approved a secondary suites consultation plan. “Consulting with the public will help us to find out if secondary suites are supported within our electoral areas, and if so, what locations and forms residents prefer,” said RDN Chairperson Joe Stanhope. “The RDN board invites anyone with interest in or concerns about secondary suites to participate in this process.” There are a number of ways to participate, including an online survey, informal meetings in each electoral area, and attendance at community events.

Karma Coffee roasting success
Coombs roaster and coffee shop serious about their coffee and their karma LISSA ALEXANDER
reporter@pqbnews.com
Coffee crops are one of the worst when it comes to the amount of pesticides sprayed, according to Karma Coffee’s Rob Wesson. And that’s one of the reasons Karma Coffee sells and brews certified organic coffee, he said. “I think as a species, if we want to carry on, we’re going to have to use a little more sustainable and organic practices,” said Wesson, who owns Karma Coffee in Coombs with his partner Melanie Van Der Stock. Karma Coffee is also socially responsible. The farms that grow Karma’s beans are governed by at least one of the many socially responsible organizations including Fair Trade, Bird Friendly (SMBC) and Rainforest Alliance. Fair Trade works to ensure farmers and artisans get a better deal, whether that means price-wise or trading relationships. Bird Friendly, labeled by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Centre, encourages production of shadegrown coffee, which helps conserve the environments of migratory birds. And the Rainforest Alliance is dedicated to the conservation of tropical forests. Karma Coffee also supports local organizations like the Salvation Army, which has a great reputation for getting the majority of its money out to those who need it most, Wesson said. “We’re a small fish in a big sea but (we have to) start someplace,” he said. Wesson and Van Der Stock purchased Karma in 2007, after it had been in operation for 10 years. Wesson, who does all the roasting, tasting and blending, said he has continued with similar ethical and coffee blending prac-

tices as his predecessor with some tweaks. He also added a café to the operation last year, which sells a variety of coffees and baked goods including gluten-free. Karma coffee is roasted on-site in small batches, which Wesson said makes a big difference. “It’s like your grandmother, when she made her cookies in the oven and they tasted great. But if you go get
manufactured cookies they don’t taste great. You lose something when you become industrialized, I think.” Wesson uses two roasters, his smaller drum roaster, which has the heat source underneath and rotates so the beans don’t burn. And then he has a hybrid drum and air roaster, which he’s quite fond of. “If you cut open (a bean) that is done in a drum, you’ll see it will be darker on the outside. With this (hybrid roaster) it’s a more uniform colour. “ Wesson sells his signature beans in grocery stores around the Island, on the Gulf Islands, in Vancouver and in a few other B.C. locations. He also brings in limited edition beans and experiments with blending. When taste testing, he looks for aroma, taste, body acidity (brightness) and after-taste. And he likes the espresso beans that create a nice creme. The most fun part about owning Karma Coffee is getting to meet new people, he said, especially now with the café. Karma Coffee also extends a hand to those down on their luck with their version of the “suspended coffee club” idea that has been trending coffee shops around the world. Customers can come into Karma’s coffee shop at 2458 Alberni Hwy in Coombs and pay it forward, by asking for a suspended cup or treat, along with their order. That item will be recorded and those who are down on their luck can come in and ask if there is any “suspended Karma” available. For more visit www.karmacoffee.com, find them on Facebook and Twitter, or call 250-248-7312.

A paper route is about so much more than money. These days kids want and need so many things. With a paper route they not only earn the money to buy those things, they also gain a new respect for themselves. They discover a new sense of confidence, power and control by having their very own job, making their own money and paying for their own games, phones and time with friends. After school Tuesday and Thursday. And even better... there are no collections required.

Ed the builder sets national record Local senior sets new national record after a lifetime of preparation weightlifting JAMES CL ARKE sports@pqbnews.com
You can chalk up another weightlifting record for Oceanside’s Ed Fergusson, this one of the national variety, and a first to boot. Fergusson, who turns 78 June 26, established new Canadian records in the M75 (for men 7579) 94kg weight category, then raised the bar a few weeks later. Fergusson’s journey started with the Canadian Masters Weightlifting Champions in Scarborough, Ont. April 27 where he set a new overall record in his division with a combined score of 110kg, which came by way of records in the snatch (48kg) and clean and jerk (62kg). There was no previous record, as it is the first time anyone that old has lifted that much in that weight division at the nationals. “I had to gain about seven pounds,” the easy going senior said of his run at the new Canadian records, and confirmed “it was harder than I though it would be. I had to do a lot of high repetition squats to build the muscle size in my legs.” Fergusson and his wife Brenda left for Ontario April 22 and made a vacation of it, staying with family and friends, only returning home this month. Asked how long he prepared for the Canadian’s, Fergusson paused, and said “all my life I guess, I mean I’ve been training (for weightlifting) for what, 50 years come September.” On the May Long weekend, Fergusson, who is also a certified Level 2 international referee, was back in his old stomping grounds in Edmonton officiating at the Canadian Weightlifting Championships. The following weekend on May 25 he returned to the same venue (the Saville Community Sports Centre at University of Alberta) for the Alberta Open, where he bettered his record in the M75 94kg clean and jerk by three kilos
with a lift of 65kg. Fergusson was raised in Saskatchewan but spent 37 years as a carpentry teacher in Edmonton where he started the Edmonton High School Power Lifting Championships in 1963, which are still held annually. An accomplished lifter, mentor and coach, Fergusson entered his first competition in 1972, and that same year helped form the Alberta Weightlifting Association. Back on home court so to speak, after living there for 51 years there were lots of family, friends and former students on hand cheering him on. “Oh for sure,” he chuckled when asked if the cheering section spurred him on. “It all helps, and when there’s someone you’ve taught in the past and they’re out there yelling ‘come on ‘ Ferg you can do it, it’s kind’a neat, it puts a little pressure on to actually do it.” The other records he holds — the two individuals and the overall — are B.C. Masters’ records in the M75 85kg category. He also held the M75 Canadian Masters record in the 85kg category for two years. Fergusson’s typical training regime has him working out at Jim’s Gym in Parksville three times a week, and down the road at Nanaimo CrossFit two evenings a week. All this, and he also still does quality carpentry work on the side. “Satisfaction, of course,” he answered when asked how it felt to accomplish his goal and secure a spot in the record book, “and happy with the results of all that hard work. It pushed me, no question.” UP NEXT Fergusson’s next competition is the 41st annual SeaFest Open in White Rock at the end of the month, an event to which he said he will be bringing three understudies.

Parksville’s Sea Soil Classic brings out the fans JAMES CL ARKE
sports@pqbnews.com
Close to 100 spectators from all over the Island turned out at the Parksville Lawn Bowling Club Sunday for the Sea Soil Classic finals. One of the premier men’s triples tournaments in B.C., this year’s Sea Soil, the seventh annual, featured 17 teams in A and B events. In the end, it was the Vancouver team of German Santana, Craig Wilson and Mel Eccles getting past Parksville’s Stu MacNaughton, Jim Muir and Rick Dolley 16-7 in the challenging A event final. In the all-Parksville B event final, it was skip Bill Mill with Peter Zboyovsky and Gil Simpson over Mick Banks (skip), Geoff Holland and Jack Lawrence 13-9. Defending A event champion Gary

Robinson, who skipped his team to top spot two of the previous three years, saw his run end, but the longtime PLBC stalwart and the man who started (and still organizes) the Classic, was in great spirits Sunday as he watched from the grassy knoll in the sun.
Play began Friday; each team played five games in their division with winners moving on to the semi-finals Sunday morning, followed by the finals that afternoon. The Parksville Lawn Bowling Club, said Carol Bucyk, “would like to thank
all participant teams and the wonderful businesses who donated products and services for the club’s fundraising activities for the Oceanside Hospice Society. They would especially like to thank the great folks at Sea Soil for their commitment to this tournament.”

Parksivlle Community Park was jump’n Saturday as nearly 200 players (196 to be exact) took to the sand courts for the ninth annual Vancouver Island High School Beach Volleyball Championships. “I thought it went really well — we had a lot of positive feedback,” Stephen Epp, regional coach for Volleyball B.C., said after, adding “the weather held out for us and the kids had a great time.” There were 98 doubles teams in all entered this year, with Timberline from Campbell River sending the most teams at 17. Oceanside had three teams from Ballenas Secondary School competing at the big annual, for boys and girls Grade 8 through 12. Parksville’s Mariah St. Pierre and her partner Breanna Harvey went 3-1 pool play and undefeated at 3-0 in the playoffs to garner gold in the nine team Grade 10 Girls division, while Jenna Pearce and Alex Cloutier were 3-0 in pool and 2-1 in the playoffs to take silver in the 20-team Grade 11/12 Girls division. Ballenas Grade 10s Jacob Cloutier and Aiden Collins were the only local boys in the mix. Caitlin Leachman and Tahlia Smith from Kwalikum Secondary played three games, but were sidelined with injuries. Parksville is the permanent home for the Island’s “because it’s the only beach that has enough courts to run it. “It’s awesome — it’s the best beach, best location in the province, I’d say,” said Epp. GAMES ON: Volleyball B.C. is back June 23 and again July 7 for the Sand Series youth tournaments, and on July 20 Parksville will play host to the inaugural Island Beach Volleyball Championships, which will run in conjunction with an adult pro event. The action gets underway at 9:30 a.m. and runs through to the around 6 p.m.

RECYCLING
These are busy times at the Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club (QBLBC), and the members wouldn’t have it any other way. “Our summer season is now in full swing. Many of our teams have traveled around the Island to tournaments — there is usually one going on every weekend,” says QBLBC booster and big fan of the game Jane Nielsen. On June 2-3 QBLBC hosted its annual Mixed Triples event “for club members only, and is put on to help get our new bowlers involved in tournament play in a competitive but friendly environment, and we had many first and second year bowlers take part,” Nielsen said. Taking top spot at that one was the team of Ken Welwood, Jane Nielsen and Mike Berry (a new bowler to the club). And while the winning team went undefeated at 4-0, “there were several teams with 3-1 records, and it came down to ends won and point differential,” said Nielsen, with second place going to Darryl Chapman, Andrea Petrie and Helen Roberts, and Gwen Martin, George Machin and Dan Blue taking third. “A good time was had by all — good bowling

and as usual our volunteers in the kitchen provided lots of goodies for the bowlers to enjoy.” “The coming months are going to be a busy time for our members,” she said, a couple of highlights being the Mens and Ladies Open Triples (June 22-23) tournament with teams from the Island participating, followed by the QBLBC’s Mens & Ladies Pairs (July 3-4). On July 12-14 the Qualicum Beach club plays host to the Provincial Mens Fours, and Nielsen reminds readers the event is for “anyone out there who wants to see some great bowling.” Anyone interested is invited to stop by the club (located at 665 Jones St. in QB) any Tuesday from 1-3 p.m. “as we have a coach on duty and you can give it a try.” For more information call 250-738-0023 or go to www.qblbc.com.

YOUNG ARTISTS
Nine-year-old’s work sells for $50 at gallery An elementary school class visited the Artworx gallery in Qualicum Beach BRENDA GOUGH NEWS Contributor
A recent field trip by some young art students from Qualicum Beach Elementary School has resulted in one budding artist getting her first sale. Robert Adamson has been a teacher for 28 years and one way he likes to inspire his students is to introduce them to local artists in the community. On May 30 Adamson’s Grade 4 art class visited the Artworx Gallery in Qualicum Beach and met with Allan Dunfield, an artist who they have been recently studying. The children enjoyed free time in the gallery to view the art works of Dunfield and other local artists. The students participated in a Q & A with Dunfield and asked a lot of questions including: How long does it take to paint a picture? How come they’re so expensive? How often do you paint? Each of the children painted a picture to replicate one of Dunfield’s pieces and they choose
three to show the artist. Brooke Henson, Dagen de Waal and Serena Bruneau not only presented their pieces to Dunfield, the trio’s pieces were then put on display in the gallery next to Dunfield’s piece. Nine year old Henson was then informed her piece had been purchased for $50. On June 6 Henson popped by the gallery to pick up her cash and meet the buyer, Lawrence Setter a realtor with ReMax First Realty in Parksville. Henson said she’s not sure what she will do with her first commission and for now it will be saved. She acknowledged that reproducing Dunfield’s piece had some challenging moments. “It was easy at one point but hard at some points.” She said she learned a lot about the local artist in this project. “He doesn’t draw the painting first. He puts a different colour in the background and then he paints over it,” she explained. Her teacher agreed that all of his students have done a phenomenal job and Henson should be especially proud. “When we were coming here to meet Allan the kids went

Not too many Grade 4 students can say they have sold their artwork in a real art gallery, but nine year old Brooke Henson of Qualicum Beach Elementary School has received her first commission on a piece exhibited at the Artworx Gallery.
around and chose three pieces that they thought were the three best examples of the work and that’s how Brooke’s got chosen. She was chosen by her peers not by me,” he admitted. He said he picked Dunfield to study because he happened to run across a piece of his work on
the internet. “Then I saw that he had a show here and I came in and looked at his work and the reason I chose him is because he has very strong images and very simplistic shapes. He said the details in Dunfield’s pieces are simplistic so it
was easy for the children to talk about his work. “We discussed how we would compose his work, what the shapes were and the colours he might have chosen.” Adamson stated it was a really good way of introducing his students to a local artist.

Dave Marco is playing with his band the Big Twang Theory at the Shady Rest Pub Saturday night.
Folk rock music with a country flavour will feed musical appetites at the Shady Rest Pub this Saturday, with the Big Twang Theory. Dave Marco heads this band, a veteran to lounge and coffeehouse performing. Marco started off performing as a folk singer at age 16 while living in Edmonton. After a few years he hit the road and travelled around Western Canada. This was in the 70s, and a Call Anit y or Kath e, e r f for a ion t a no-oblig io t n! consulta
he garnered a good reputation as a lounge entertainer throughout that decade. In Kamloops in 1978, Marco set a possible world record (although someone forgot to call Guinness) playing non-stop for 15 hours without any breaks and without repeating any songs. This was an event following “the big beer strike,” when lots of weak American beer was imported, he explained. So to get rid of all this weak beer, they decided to hold this event,
with a CTV weatherman tending the bar. Marco relocated to Alberta shortly after, and when Video Lottery Terminals (VLTs) were introduced in that province work started drying up, he said. Marco took to working on the oil patch for a number of years. In 2008, when many of the sub contractors were let go, Marco came to Vancouver Island to resume his music career.

Parksville Mayor Chris Burger was one of many community leaders who volunteered their time last week for Tim Hortons Camp Day.

$6,800 raised locally Enthusiastic volunteer Joan LeMoine says she had fun being in a makeshift jail BRENDA GOUGH NEWS Contributor
There was quite a commotion at the Parksville Tim Hortons June 5. Some members of the Oceanside RCMP attended but the incident that saw some community leaders behind bars was all in fun as the coffee giant once again hosted Camp Day. The annual event helps raise money to send less fortunate kids in the community on a camping adventure of a lifetime. The Parksville location generated $6,800, up from $6000 last year. Nationwide figures were not available at press time. The money will be donated to the Tim Horton Children’s Foundation, a non-profit, charitable organization committed to providing a fun-filled camp environment for children from economically disadvantaged homes.
Jean Forrest, General Manager of the Parksville Tim Hortons said they are thrilled with how well Camp Day went. “It was a great day. All the helpers were amazing,” she acknowledged. She pointed out that Joan LeMoine made the most money in the makeshift jail that saw many community members locked up until they raised enough money to get out of the slammer. “Joan beat everyone. It was all in fun and great for our community.” LeMoine has been in jail a few times … for a good cause. Well known in the community as an enthusiastic volunteer, LeMoine said she had a blast behind bars. “I was there to have fun. It is a good cause. I will do anything for kids.” More than 185,000 children have benefited from a Foundation camp experience since 1974. Locally two well deserving children from School District 69 will go to the Kananaskis camp in Alberta at no cost to their families.
Next gig: Shady Rest Pub continued from page B1
Today, Marco’s got more than 1,000 songs in his repertoire and many originals to boot. For the past couple years he has teamed up with a number of other local seasoned musicians, and they call themselves Big Twang Theory. The group plays country rock and will be bringing it to the Shady Rest Pub in Qualicum
Beach at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, as well as July 20. There is no cover charge. Marco also hosts Monday night Open Mic at The Shady. For more on the Shady Rest visit www. shadyrest.ca or call 250-752-9111.

Victor Camire of Parksville, although not one of the original founding members, was recruited by Bill Lineham when the Car Show moved to the Rocking Horse Pub in 1996 and remains a dedicated, hard working, member of the Seaside Cruizers to this day. One of Victor’s early tasks was to organize groups like the local Sea Cadets to pick-up stones and rocks from where the cars were going to park. As all of the founding members have moved on, Victor is the only remaining “early” member who has continuously been a member of the Seaside Cruizers. Victor, and with the help of his wife Lori, has been the organizer of administrative tasks such as membership,

several acres of grass with the Pub, live music and just a great time overall. By this time the Club had grown to 12 members. But once again they were forced to move when the Rocking Horse Pub was closing down. (The Rocking horse Pub has since re-opened). In 2001 the club moved the venue of the Show N’ Shine to the Town of Qualicum Beach where it continues to be held until this day. The Town of Qualicum Beach is second to none in terms of location, design, beauty and atmosphere. We now have over forty members and rely on an additional 40-50 outside volunteers to put on one of the largest car shows on Vancouver Island with approximately 600 cars and upwards of 15,000 spectators. No wonder Oprah Winfrey declared on one of her shows that the Seaside Cruizer’s Show N’ Shine is one of the 10 best things to do on Father’s Day. On April 5, 2005 the Seaside Cruizers were incorporated as a non-profit Community Fundraising Society in British Columbia and we continue to donate the net proceeds of our car show to local charities and community groups.

It is my pleasure to welcome everyone to the 20th. Anniversary Seaside Cruizers Father’s Day Show N’ Shine. I have the great honour of working with a dedicated, hardworking group of Seaside Cruizer’s members and numerous other volunteers, to bring you what we think is the best Car Show on Vancouver Island. This 20 year milestone could not have been achieved without the ongoing financial sponsorship support of numerous local businesses, organizations and the Town of Qualicum Beach. Message from Chairman, Dave Field
This is the 20th. Anniversary of the Seaside Cruizers Car Club. The club was formed in 1993 by six local car enthusiasts. The founding members were Dave Gray, Steve Palmer, Rick Dickinson, Bob Lins, Lou Vernon and Bill Lineham. The Club was founded on the basis of being a casual, low key club of guys who simply wanted to get together, talk about cars and put on a small annual car show. In planning for that show they decided the best weekend of the cruising season that was available at that time was the Father’s Day Weekend in June. The inaugural Seaside Cruizers Father’s Show was held and attracted about 65 cars. The first three shows were held at the Island Hall Hotel, now the current site of the Beach Club, in Parksville. When the Island Hall closed it’s doors we moved to the Rocking Horse Pub in Nanoose Bay where the next five shows were held. This was a beautiful location on

BROOM BUSTING
Estuary an important target BRENDA GOUGH NEWS Contributor
Employees of the Parksville and Qualicum Beach branches of the Royal Bank of Canada joined volunteers from Ducks Unlimited Canada on June 6 to get rid of invasive Broom at the Englishman River Estuary. More than a dozen Broom bashers gathered at the foot of Mills Street in Parksville where they heard from Doug Herchmer, a Nature Trust of B.C. vol-
unteer warden who explained the work they have already done to rehabilitate the area known as Parksville Flats. He said at one time the estuary was completely covered in Scotch Broom posing a huge threat to the native plants which are crucial for the wildlife that call the estuary home. He said many volunteers, including a Katimavik crew, have cleared a lot of Broom in the area. but despite their ef-

forts there are still remnants of the weed. He said they also planted native trees in the area but after two straight summers of dry weather a lot of them died. “It is difficult to get trees established because of drought and deer. You have to plant species that like to grow here and it is a function of moisture,” he pointed out. Herchmer said Broom is a strong competitor with native plants, including newly planted coniferous forests and that is why they want to get rid of it. “I wish people would take it more seriously and pull Broom on their own property,” he confessed. The Broom patch the volunteers at the Englishman River Estuary were pulling was young and not blooming which according to Herchmer is even harder to get rid of than the giant ones. “This is a really nasty patch. It is labour intensive because you have to get on your hands and knees to get at it.” The estuary is managed by the Vancouver Island Conservation Program in partnership with the Ministry of Forests, Lands & Natural Resource Operations, Ducks Unlimited Canada, the Nature Trust of B.C., the RDN and the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation. According to the information board at the entrance to the estuary the site is a safe harbour for millions of migratory birds and each year more than 250 species of birds have been reported in the area.

An open house May 30 at Longevity Medical Aesthetics in Qualicum Beach highlighted some new and revolutionary skin treatments. Dr. Andy Biro and others demonstrated some of the treatments that help a variety of skin conditions. A demonstration of Botox therapy wasn’t scary to watch and the volunteer agreed the procedure wasn’t painful. The Venus Freeze was also unveiled and several people got to try out the non-invasive treatment that combines radio frequency and magnetic pulses to tighten skin in a a safe and pain-free way. She may be 100 years old but Muriel Dash hasn’t forgotten her days when she was a student at the McMillan School in Parksville. On June 7 she was the guest of honour at a reception for the centennial celebrations now taking place at the McMillan Arts Centre (MAC). Muriel was born in 1913 the same year the school was built and she attended school in the building starting in Grade 8 in1927. She said her favourite teacher was Mr. Parfitt. As part of the centennial celebrations there is a photo exhibition which includes class photos taken through the years from 1918 to 1977. Liz Holme who spent months gathering the memorabilia said it was exciting going through old images, some which were found in the archives of School District 69. Save on Foods in Parksville has been supporting veterans in the community since 1990 and the store was recently recognized for its contribution to the Parksville Legion. Every Remembrance Day, Save On Foods provides food for the more than 400 veterans who are served lunch after the ceremonies and staff from the store volunteer their time to serve the vets. Royal Canadian Legion Branch #49 leadership members presented employees and management with a medal of service June 4. Parksville Legion president Shona Rowe said it is a prestigious medal to receive and Save On Foods definitely deserved it for their continued outstanding service to the legion. Grade 10 Ballenas students Mariah St. Pierre and Breanne Harvey dug deep and came up the gold medal winners at the Vancouver Island High School Open Beach Volleyball tournament June 8 in Parksville . Their victory was no easy feat considering the twins they beat from Timberline Secondary School were on the B.C. Summer Games vollyball team last summer and train regularly with the provincial coach. There were plenty of bargains to be found at the big yard sale hosted by the Errington Volunteer Fire Department on June 8. The fundraiser generated some amazing donations from the community including Joe Cunningham Ford in Parksville and resulted in a great day of picking for garage sale enthusiasts. There was a birthday cake and bubbly for guests at the Beach Club Resort in Parksville which celebrated its 5th anniversary on June 9. There was lots to celebrate as the resort was once again awarded with a 2013 Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor. It is the third consecutive year the Parksville resort has received the award.
Thank you for your support!
Longevity Medical Aesthetics held an open house event May 30 and several people had an opportunity to sample some of the services available at the Qualicum Beach office. Janet Anker provided a skin firming collagen treatment to Pam Caldwell.
100 year old Muriel Dash was a student at the McMillan School in Parksville, now known as the McMillan Arts Centre (MAC). Her son Ted Dash points out his mom in an old classroom photo which is part of a centennial exhibit featuring class photos taken through the years from 1918 to 1977.
Save On Foods Parksville Assistant Manager Terry Marquis was happy to accept an award on behalf of staff and management from Shona Rowe, President of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #49, Parksville. The store was presented with a service medal for it’s outstanding support of veterans in Parksville.
It was a gold medal day for Grade 10 Ballenas students Mariah St. Pierre (left) and Breanne Harvey at the Vancouver Island High School Open Beach Volleyball tournament June 8 at Parksville Community Park. The pair who teamed up last minute took top spot beating Nicole and Kaitlyn Herbert of Timberline Secondary School in Campbell River.
The Errington Volunteer Fire Department did some recruiting at their big yard sale and car wash June 8. Four year old Brady Sigouin got some tips on car washing 101 from some experts including his dad Mason who is one of the volunteers for the EVFD.
The Beach Club Resort celebrated its 5th birthday on June 9 with a champagne toast and of course some birthday cake. General Manager Shawna Broekhuizen sabred some bubbly for the special day and then invited guests to help them celebrate the milestone.

DENMAN IsLAND
Garden tour reveals much TV personality’s creation featured on 20th year of tour
“Trendiness in the garden is not something I have much time for, but it is fascinating to observe how various enthusiasms ebb and flow through the world of gardening,” says Des Kennedy. He should know — he’s an award-winning author of numerous books, a TV and radio personality and a public speaker, all focused on gardening, and he’s been cultivating his own garden with his partner Sandy for over 40 years. The Kennedys’ glorious garden and fairytale house is featured on this year’s Denman Island Home & Garden Tour, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this June 15-16. The 2013 Denman Island Home and Garden Tour will showcase 12 Denman homes and gardens, some right on trend, some charmingly old-fashioned, but all of them outstanding. Tickets are $18 (kids free), and available at www.denmanconservancy.org, Ken Dor Garden Centre and Arrowsmith Garden in Qualicum, Cultivate Garden and Gift in Parksville, Long Lake Nursery in Nanaimo or by calling 250-335-2148. Cyclists are encouraged with a free draw — enter at the Community Hall. This event is a fundraiser for the Denman Conservancy Association. The Kennedys were instrumental in founding this much-loved event, which has stayed the course while garden fashions have taken root, flourished and then withered...at least for a while. “Among its other attractions, a long-running event like the Denman Home & Garden Tour offers a fine opportunity to observe these arcane comings and goings,” says Kennedy. The first Denman Island Home & Garden Tour took place in 1991, catching the early wave of this boom. Over the next couple of decades, each Tour seemed to out-flower the last one, as gardeners went all out in pursuit of the greatest varieties of roses, the biggest peonies, rarest varietals, most magical water features, and most beguiling paths. — Submitted by Denman Conservancy Association

LEGION WEEK Is JUNE 24-30
Veterans honoured with lunch BRENDA GOUGH
NEWS Contributor
Some wore their uniforms, others chose to dress down, but the men and women who have served in Canada’s military were honoured recently by the Mt. Arrowsmith Branch 49 Royal Canadian Legion. There was a full house of veterans of all ages Sunday, June 2 at the Parksville Legion for an appreciation lunch. Legion spokesperson Gale Mossman said the branch hosted the sold out event to honour all veterans who have served their country by providing a lunch for them and giving them the opportunity to meet and swap stories. The lunch was open to all veter-
ans within the local area and Mossman acknowledged that it is important to remember the men and women who served selflessly to help make this a better place for everyone. “What we want to do is raise awareness of the debt we owe to all our veterans — no matter what their age,” said Mossman. Those who served to protect our freedom, champion human rights, promote Canada’s values and preserve democracy made the ultimate sacrifice and Mossman said it is important to recognize this not just on Remembrance Day. “The uniqueness of the event is that
while we take the time to honour those who died in battle on November 11th through our Remembrance Day services; we also need to honour those who came home and slipped back into civilian life. They served their country by fighting when called upon and then have (and still are) contributing to their communities.” Provincially, Legion Week will be celebrated June 24 to 30. Events will be taking place around B.C. Although nothing formal has been planned in Parksville for Legion Week, members says people are encouraged to visit the Legion to learn more about what they do in the community.
