Some Chilliwack farmers are fighting to protect their land from unnecessary damage by a natural gas pipeline company, even under threat of a forced entry order. Members of the Fraser Valley Association of Pipeline Landowners, led by president Gord Mitchell, want a stringent contract with Spectra Energy before the company enters their land to replace an outdated pipeline under their fields. Negotiations have failed. Mitchell was served legal papers on Friday from Spectra Energy, indicating that the company has applied to the National Energy Board for a forced entry order onto Mitchell’s cornfield, which is home to the wellknown Sparkes Corn Barn. Mitchell has 21 days to respond before NEB makes a ruling. “We’re just going to ask the NEB that they leave it for us to sign a contract so that we can protect ourselves,” said Mitchell. “If the worst happens, if the order comes through, then we’re backed into a corner where we won’t have any other recourse except to stand in front of the machines. Because we have to have this (the contract). We can’t allow them to do this again,” he said, referring to land damage resulting from Spectra’s repair of the pipeline two years ago. 1957, the line has become strained as Chilliwack’s population has grown and activity passing overhead and nearby has increased. In line with regulations, Spectra Energy must replace three kilometres of pipeline that cuts underneath the city with another pipe with stronger walls. Most of the designated replacement will be through agricultural land, 2.4 km in the east end of the city below Luckukuck Way, passing through Chilliwack River and Prairie Central roads. The company planned to start this first phase of the project early this month, expecting to complete it by September. However, because some
farmers along the line have refused access without a rigid contract, Spectra has not begun the work. In 2011, Spectra came onto Mitchell’s land to investigate an anomaly in the pipe. The crop at the dig site was totally damaged as a result. And, the heavy machinery that drove through the field to access the dig compressed the soil to such an extent that next year’s corn along the access route was much smaller and paler, and worth much less, than the corn one row over. “We will be compensating for damages and for crop losses based on the fair market value of whatever crops are affected...in that 30-metre
right-of-way,” said Gary Weilinger, Spectra Energy’s vice-president of external affairs. Mitchell received approximately $68,000 in compensation for damage related to Spectra’s work on the pipeline in 2011. But the amount covered only one year of losses, whereas crop damage has extended to every subsequent year. There was total crop loss on the dig site in both 2011 and 2012, according to Mitchell. He expects 80–90 per cent loss in the area this year. This does not include crop damage along the machinery access route. Spectra Energy commits to repair-
ing operation sites, including replacing topsoil, shrubs, and, in the case of city work, pavement. “We put everything back,” said Weilinger. “We will leave things the way we found it before we came.” In 2011, because of the urgent nature of the work, Spectra contractors did not remove the topsoil prior to digging. The quality of the replacement topsoil on the land was very poor, Mitchell says. The dry earth is low in nutrients and nitrogen, and has failed to nurture a good crop. Chilliwack home sales buck Fraser Valley trend Alina Konevski The Progress
As a wave of declining home sales sweeps the Lower Mainland, Chilliwack has been relatively immune, keeping its housing market stable. A total of 228 homes sold last month, down six per cent from the same month in 2012. The Chilliwack and District Real Estate Board attributes the decline to buyers waiting for the results of the election and the impact of the return to the GST before making a decision. CADREB expects sales to rise in
coming months. “In recent discussions with the B.C. Real Estate Association, all indications are that we will continue to see a similar market for the near future. We are likely to see local sales figures return to seasonal norms, and we may even see a stronger market as record low interest rates continue,” said president Jesse Hildebrandt. Throughout the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board, which covers Abbotsford, Mission, Langley, White Rock, Surrey, and North Delta, home sales plummeted 15 per cent last month as compared to the same
time last year. May sales in the area were the slowest since 2001. In Abbotsford alone, sales of detached homes dropped 15 per cent, and active listings 18 per cent. High real estate prices are contributing to decreasing sales in the Mainland, but prices won’t decline significantly until sales drop even further. Chilliwack’s housing market has kept stable, indicating fair-priced properties. “Cost of living in Chilliwack is so much less than even Abbotsford, or going farther west. In prices for homes, we don’t see the peaks, we
don’t see the lows. We see a pretty average price,” said Hildebrandt. It remains a buyer’s market, although not a terrible one for sellers. Over a third of the residential properties that sold last month in Chilliwack were in the $300,000 to $399,999 range, with the next most popular category being the $400,000 to $499,999 range. No houses sold over $1,000,000, and five sold under $49,999. “What this represents is a continued interest in move-up homes and newer construction,” said Hildebrandt. “Buyers are realizing

that with the low interest rates and a strengthening economy, their dollars will buy a lot more during a flat market.” There were 1,832 active listings at the end of the month, a decline from the 1,901 listings at the end of May 2012. Single family detached homes sat on the market 58 days before selling, townhouses 79 days, and mobile homes 94 days. This is slightly longer than the statistics at the end of April of this year. Apartments took 91 days to sell, according to the May 2013 figures, an increase of 40 days from April.

Two men found guilty of civil contempt for distributing unpasteurized milk from a Chilliwack farm will go to jail if they do it again, a B.C. Supreme Court justice ruled last week. Michael Schmidt and Gordon Watson were both handed three-month suspended sentences for defying an earlier court order prohibiting the distribution of raw milk from the Prairie Central Road farm. They had argued that because the milk was being offered as a “cosmetic,” and labeled “not for human consumption,” the court order prohibiting the distribution did not apply. However, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Randall Wong, said there was little doubt what the two men were up to. Said Wong in his ruling released Thursday: “In this case, distributing raw milk as a purported cosmetic product was patent lip service and ruse to distribute raw milk for human consumption.” The case stems from an earlier injunction granted to Fraser Health to shut down a socalled “cow share” program initially run by Alice Jongerden. Called “Home on the Range,” the operation paid its shareholders dividends in the form of raw milk and raw milk products. In 2010, Fraser Health sought and received a permanent injunction against Jongerden, arguing she had breached the Public Health Act by packaging raw milk for distribution. Under the Public Health Act, milk that has not been processed by a licenced dairy is considered a health hazard. Despite the injunction, a year later both Schmidt and Watson had assumed operation of the farm and continued distribution of the raw milk. Under a “new business model,” however, the products were labeled cosmetic and given names like “Cleopatra’s Enzymatic Alpine Lotion.” Fraser Health was not impressed. In August of 2011 it received a warrant to search the property. Nothing was seized during the Aug. 25 search, but Fraser Health Authority spokesman Roy Thorpe-Dorward said at the time that photographs of the farm on Prairie Central Road were being reviewed to determine if a

When local Grade 7 student Mariah Dann was caught fighting in school in May, she was immediately suspended. But instead of spending a leisurely few days with her assignments at home, the school sent her to a unique YMCA program. Alongside a couple of other suspended students, Dann did her schoolwork in the mornings in a quiet room, and participated in workshops and group discussions in the afternoon. She watched educational videos, such
as a YouTube one about the consequences of doing drugs, and spoke about what she wants to become when she’s older. “It made me think about my life,” she said. “It made me think about the future in a different way.” She walked away from her few days at the Y with a clearer perspective on the fight that got her suspended in the first place. “I feel stupid for getting into a fight with a person when I could’ve just walked away,” said Dann. “It was kind of unnecessary starting a huge fight like that.”

Dann has since made amends, and said there is no longer tension at school. Chilliwack was the first B.C. municipality to adopt the YMCA’s Alternative Suspension model three years ago, a program that began in Quebec in 1999. A national independent evaluation in 2005 found that 85 per cent of participating students improved in their attitudes and behaviours after the program in the shortterm. Half still showed improvement in the medium-term. About 250 Chilliwack students have passed through the program, which works by referral

Both Monahan and Dann said they got more of their schoolwork done at the Y than in their normal classes, a common consequence when students are put into smaller and quieter classrooms away from their regular peers. “In the morning time, it’s six students in the room, it’s dead silent,” said West. “They’re focused on their work, they’re getting support where they need it, and they’re getting caught up. I’ve heard this from the schools themselves. Chilliwack RCMP were called to the industrial part of Yale Road last week to investigate a complaint of a man with a gun. Police officers arrested four people from a motel complex in the 44400-block of Yale Road at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. Two people were found to be in possession of a long barrel weapon, the investigation revealed. Gregory J. Cromarty, 42, and Virginia F. Myles, 39, both of Chilliwack, were charged with possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes, unauthorized possession of a firearm, and uttering threats.  Cromarty was held in custody until his next court appearance on June 18, Myles was released on conditions and also set to appear in court June 18. “This incident underlines the need for our current gun amnesty,� said Cpl. Len vanNieuwenhuizen. “June is Gun amnesty month and it is imperative, in the name of community safety, that we get the firearms off the streets.�

Fraser Health concluded it wasn’t, and argued both Schmidt and Watson were in contempt. Justice Wong agreed. “I conclude that the evidence overwhelmingly establishes that both respondents, Michael Schmidt and Gordon Watson, are guilty of contempt of court beyond a reasonable doubt.� The two were given a three-month suspended sentence, and one-year probation. “Any repetition of this contempt during the probationary period will trigger the imposed sentence imprisonment of three months,� Wong added. The two were also ordered to pay court costs.

Tough Mudder style racing comes to Chilliwack in September with the first ever Unbridled Mud Trials. The event will be held Sept. 28 at the Island 22 Horse Park, featuring tons of mucky mayhem. “It’s going to be a five kilometre course with 22 obstacles,” said Andrea Meister, secretary for the Island 22 Equestrian Park Society. “We’ll use some of the horse jumps, because they’re really big. We’ll have mud baths and climbing and ropes, and hopefully it’s successful and we can turn it into annual event.” Tough Mudder is the template, but the Chilliwack event will have its own personality.
The course will be tough, but not Tough Mudder tough. There won’t be ice, fire or (sadly) electrical snakes. It will be an alcohol free event for ages 14 and up. There will be sillycostume competition and lots of prizes up for grabs. “We wanted to make sure it’s female and kid friendly,” Meister said. “An event like this promotes people getting out to exercise, doing a sport and having fun. It promotes Island 22 as an exercise area and everyone we’ve talked to so far has said, ‘That is so cool!’” “Everyone knows Tough Mudder. It has gotten so huge,” she added, referencing the hardcore stamina-testing events designed by British Special Forces. “But we didn’t want to just bring a Tough Mudder event to Chilliwack, Continued: ISLAND 22/ p7

Protecting Island 22 is a top priority for organizers, who will do much of the course construction after the last horse event is run. “We know exactly which areas will get a little mucky, and that would happen anyways with the rain,� Meister said. “There won’t be any trenches or holes dug. We’ll be building up, not down. We know the park well and we know what we can do without damaging it.� Tickets are on sale now. Adults can enter for $52. Youths ages 14-18 get in for $35. News Farmers seek pipeline company assurance GAS from Front Energy since 1957, a document that Gord Mitchell says was forced onto his father and grandfather. The family received only $157 as compensation for the land surveys and legal fees related to the pipeline’s construction. However, crops along the route do not grow as well as others, says Mitchell, because the pipeline warms the soil and dries out the plants. “Every year since then, we’ve lost crop on our land,” said Mitchell, who argues that compensation should take into account loss in subsequent years. Mitchell will allow Spectra Energy onto the land to replace the existing pipe, under the condition that Spectra sign a contract similar to one they have with Ontario farmers. A 2010 Ontario contract between the company and a group of pipeline landowners, GaploUnion, includes a sliding scale for compensation, in which Spectra pays the farmer the full value of affected crop sites for several years, gradually reducing the amount to
20 per cent compensation in perpetuity. The Ontario contract also has a wet soil shutdown clause. On Mitchell’s property in 2011, contractors continued to do the work even as it rained, creating large depressions in the soil. The area promptly flooded, and floodwater washed into the rest of the field, spreading the damage to crops. Chilliwack farmer Alf Kloot’s properties are first in line for pipeline replacement in this first phase. Kloot has never dealt with Spectra before, but fears damage to his land after watching Mitchell’s struggle with the company. “Spectra’s so big. We’re nothing compared to Spectra,” said Kloot. “The biggest thing is just bringing the soil back to normal.” The second phase of Spectra’s replacement of the pipeline, planned for 2014, consists of 600 metres underneath the Cottonwood Mall parking lot, extending to the Real Canadian Superstore. The City of Chilliwack confirmed that the company has been cooperat-
ing well, and will rebuild the disturbed concrete and provide compensation to local businesses for any reduction in revenue. The city is not anticipating costs related to Spectra’s work. According to Weilinger, the pipeline affects 30 landowners, but only the six mak-
ing up the Fraser Valley Association of Pipeline Landowners are protesting the project. Park party sparks debate A decision by Chilliwack city council to reluctantly double its contribution to Party in the Park has sparked some spirited debate about the summertime event and its direction. Last week council agreed to a request from the Downtown Business Improvement Society to fortify its $7,000 contribution with an additional $8,000. The money, said the BIA, was necessary because of rising costs and falling sponsorships. Without the increase, the association argued, it could not deliver the kind of event people have come to expect. The request prompted some unease on council. While calling the event “one of the best things that’s happened to our community,” Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz expressed concern about the amount of money being asked for. She was joined by others on council, who wondered if Party in the Park had lost its focus. The growing popularity of the event – only in its seventh year – is hard to deny. Last year, for example, an estimated 30,000 people attended the string of Friday night parties – this despite the fact one evening was rained out. The event offers an eclectic mix of food and entertainment, family friendly

events, and open market venders. It was originally designed to take advantage of the new Chilliwack Community Park, bringing friends and neighbours together on warm summer evenings to share a snack and enjoy music onstage. Last year organizers upped the ante, bringing in some big name acts that helped swell the numbers and create a buzz in the community. But despite the public enthusiasm, corporate support has fallen. And that has some wondering if this isn’t a good time for the event to get back to its roots. Certainly organizers should be impressed by the amount of interest and debate the event has generated – a testament to the ownership people have taken of this unique community celebration. It’s also an opportunity to see what kind of Party in the Park the public truly wants. As council noted, it may be too late for that dialogue to take place this year. But it is a conversation that has to happen. The bill to city taxpayers has risen to nearly $16,000 from $2,000 in just three years. An ocean of trouble beneath the waves
Last fall, a friend visited from England so we did the touristy stuff and stopped for lunch at Horseshoe Bay. Snapping photos, Tanya took a lovely image of a jellyfish just off the dock. This past Saturday was World Oceans Day, a moment to appreciate everything oceans provide. But beneath the blue waves lie dark, troubled waters. And the jellyfish we had admired symbolizes greater problems ahead. According to the Vancouver Aquarium, oceans provide at least 50 per cent of the air we breathe. Over 2.6 billion people depend on the oceans for their primary source of protein and over three billion people depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods. The oceans absorb 30 per cent of human-caused carbon dioxide, helping to buffer the effects of global warming.

Canadians should feel more than a little connected with the oceans. Surrounded by ocean on three sides, we have the longest shoreline in the world at 243,000 km. And along any coastline almost anywhere in the world is evidence of humanity’s dependence on the seas for food, recMargaret reation, and reflection. EVANS But oceans are under stress. The evil twin of global warming is ocean acidification, a chemical condition that impacts marine food chains and slows down the ability of shellfish and corals to make shells. Marine organisms depend entirely on the oceans’ stable chemical balance that has allowed
them to evolve in complex, ecological systems over millions of years. Acidification is caused by increased levels of atmospheric CO2 absorbed by the oceans. Over the past 200 years, since the industrial revolution, oceans have become 30 per cent more acidic. According to Dr. Carol Turley, senior scientist at the U.K.’s Plymouth Marine Laboratory, when CO2 is added to sea water it forms a weak carbonic acid affecting the carbon ions that marine organisms like shellfish and corals depend on for shell-making. Turley believes that it is the rate of change that is having such a devastating impact on marine life. Couple that with overfishing, pollution, release of raw sewage, and fertilizer runoff and it’s no wonder that marine ecosystems are under stress. All this leads to jellyfish. Jellies
are populating the seas at an explosive rate. UBC marine scientists have found that global warming has caused 2,000 species to bloom earlier and expand their numbers. According to studies at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, the rise in ocean temperatures and the overfishing of marine predators has made conditions ideal for massive jellyfish blooms. Baby jellies begin as polyps and, depending on their species, they can clone themselves into hundreds of jellyfish resulting in millions of jellies blooming at the same time. Jellyfish can turn a damaged ecosystem into one far worse. They have the unique ability to eat foods further up the food chain consuming everything – eggs, larvae, fish and plankton that larger fish, seals, whales and seabirds depend on. mate ecosystems. In the 1980s jellyfish believed from the Gulf of Mexico were inadvertently introduced to the Black Sea in the ballast of one ship. They ate everything, collapsing a fishing economy. The sea’s biomass became 95 per cent jellyfish. In the Sea of Japan, the massive Nomura jellies are filling nets and crippling fisheries. Anchovy catches have decreased 20-fold. Off Namibia jellies have replaced sardine stocks. Jellyfish invade fish farms, get sucked into the cooling systems of power plants and ships and in Oman clog desalination plants. Venomous jellies are perilous to swimmers. And jellies thrive in low-oxygen dead zones. A current fear is that the oceans could revert to the Precambrian world of 500 million years ago when jellyfish ruled. It’s a sobering thought.

Plea for responsible dog ownership I am a dog owner in Chilliwack and lately I am very frustrated with other dog owners. My friend and I walk our dogs every morning and every evening in the Meadowbrook area, behind AD Rundle, and also through the old University grounds. Every day we walk by piles of dog feces left where people can step on it, I have even seen it left in front of the path out to the road from Cascades Care home. As a responsible dog owner I carry my dog bag on my leash and
always pick up what he leaves behind I am disgusted by those irresponsible dog owners who do not pick up after their dogs. In the past week we have encountered another problem in the field behind A D Rundle and on the University grounds. Again as a responsible dog owner my dog is always leashed, (it is the law ). I have run into several owners and have asked them to leash their dogs, they have been defensive and angry, as if somehow I am insult-
ing them or their dogs all of these people have insisted that their dogs are harmless and that may be so. It is not weather or not their dog is going to bite myself or my dog it is perhaps first and foremost that it is the law, second I do not know their dogs and this may be the first time they decide to bite, the third thing is that my dog was bit while on leash and had his neck punctured, he is now afraid of dogs when he is on leash and it may be that if your dog is off leash and comes up to

Witch hunt on for dog owners? I find it interesting that there is now a witch hunt to fine owners of unleashed dogs. Is this a result of the city relinquishing the animal services to the regional district? Is the district feeling the need that they must justify their services? Just how many complaints have been made over off leash dogs? I find it interesting that people without dogs come to the dog parks using it like a petting zoo. How about some answers.

Canadian Blood Services will never have enough donated blood. There is always a need for more. This is something that CBS can’t stress enough. Whether there’s a sudden and unexpected drop in donations, or CBS is at its “normal” number of donations, its message is always the same: the demand for blood is constant. “There’s never going to be enough blood because it can expire. The
sooner we can use the blood, the better,” says Marcelo Dominguez, communications specialist with CBS. This week (June 10-16) is National Blood Donor Week. In hopes of increasing B.C.’s donations of 500-600 units of blood a day — plus increasing other provinces’ donations — CBS has activated its ‘Blood Signal’. It’s kind of like the Bat-Signal. When you see the Blood Signal, that means CBS is summoning you, and they need you to come to the rescue. It means it’s time to donate blood now, and help save lives. The summer months are some of the slowest months for blood donations, as many people are away on vacation. Although some regular donors put

a pause on donating for a few months, or even several years, others donate every eight weeks like clockwork. On May 27, Ross Yaxley donated for the 100th time. His first donation was at the age of 17. “Believe it or not, I did it to get out of school. Back then we got the afternoon off school to donate,” he says. He donates because “it’s a very good cause,” and because he has nieces who have needed blood in the past. Yaxley is also a retired paid-oncall firefighter, and since there has always been a friendly competition between him and his fellow firefighters, he was frequently encouraged by his pals at Hall No. 2 to donate. Yaxley wasn’t the only one at the May 27 blood clinic with an impres-
sive number of donations. Ed Froese made his 97th donation that day. Froese also made his first donation in high school, around 1981. He was inspired by his father and late uncle who both donated. “They made it very clear that it was a good and honourable thing to do. We all looked up to my uncle. He died young,” says Froese. Why does he donate? “I think it’s something that anyone in good health can do,” says Froese. “If you’re okay with needles, I don’t see any reason why not to donate, because people need it.” Bob Buhler is at a whopping 128 donations. “I’m off to go bleed now.” That was something my dear friend, and former coworker, Penny Lett would say religiously, every eight weeks, always on a Monday. She was referring to donating blood. One day, about 13 years ago when Jenna I first started HAUCK working at The Progress, I asked her about donating. She said she made a promise to herself to donate blood for as long as she could after someone close to her suddenly needed blood. She highly recommended that I do the same. “Sure,” I thought. “Why not?” So I did, and I’ve been donating ever since. I’ve always admired Penny and her dedication to donating blood. She donated an incredible 125 times before she passed away earlier this year in March. I later learned those 125 donations meant that she actually helped save 375 lives since each unit of blood is separated into three parts — red blood cells, platelets and plasma. Continued: PENNY/ p18

Prospective sellers are often unaware that a few key improvements can drastically shorten the selling time of their homes and add to the sale price. A marketing strategy where you set the scene or “showcase” your home for the buyer can be very effective. Community gardens eyed interim use until redevelopment gets underway. Council voted unanimously to investigate the possibility of including community gardens, as part of a plan to create a healthy and sustainable downtown and to provide interim uses for empty lots waiting to be developed. “There’s a lot of excitement and anticipation about the changes downtown and a community garden would be another innovative approach we can take towards the revitalization of the area,� said Mayor Gaetz. “Community gardens bring people together from a wide variety of backgrounds and increase a sense of community ownership.� At the council meeting she noted there had

‘I am forever grateful’ BLOOD from page 13 “My number is irrelevant. It’s just a number,” he says. “The donation that’s the most important is the second one because you’ve made a choice to come back.” Donating blood for the first time is simple — it’s getting the donor to return and donate for a second time that’s more challenging, says Buhler. So any time he meets a person who’s donating for the second time, Buhler always makes a conscious choice to congratulate them for coming back and donating again. The approximate time it takes to be screened, answer questions, and then donate blood, is about an hour to an hour and 15 minutes. First, your iron is tested with a small finger-prick test. Second, you are asked to fill out a written questionnaire. Third, you’re asked a set of verbal questions which are more personal than the questionnaire. Lastly is the blood donation itself. The actual ‘giving of blood’ takes about 10 minutes. Men usually donate faster than women. “It used to take me two-and-a-half minutes to donate. Now it takes me four- to four-anda-half minutes,” says Yaxley. Over the years, CBS has added or changed questions on its questionnaire numerous times to stay up to date with any health concerns or viral outbreaks, such as West Nile Virus. Because of the bureaucratic changes, “sometimes you wonder if it’s worth it (to donate), but the answer is always ‘yes’,” says Buhler. “I’ve always felt physically better after giving blood. I don’t know if it’s a psychological thing, like out with the old and in with the new,” says Yaxley. Even though 50 per cent of Canadians are eligible to donate, only four per cent actually do. “No matter who can’t donate, anyone in this country can get blood. Anyone,” says Dominguez. Glenda Standeven is one of those recipients.
She lost her leg due to cancer in 1988. She received four units of blood during one surgery. During her second surgery, she received 12 units — that’s an entire human body’s worth of blood. “If that blood wouldn’t have been available, I would have died,” she says. “I am forever grateful to those donors for taking the time to donate.” Standeven used to be a donor herself, before her leg was amputated. “If you are able to, don’t let fear stop you. It doesn’t hurt to donate,” she says. “The life you’re saving down the road, you don’t know who that might be, and it’s pretty amazing to be able to safe a life,” she says. Junior Grizzlies stomp Roadrunners in home-field friendly
In their first live action of 2013, the GW Graham junior varsity football team rolled over the Mission Roadrunners. The Grizzlies won 30-0 at Townsend Park in a spring football exhibition. The game was played with no special teams and 80 minutes of running time. GW Graham led 12-0 through 40 minutes on a pair of rushing touchdowns. Tristan Davis got the first, rambling 25 yards up the gut. Billy Hanson got the second in similar fashion, gashing the middle of the Roadrunner defence on a 50 yard scamper. The halftime score may have been more impressive, but for two
interceptions tossed by quarterback Jordan Breuker. No. 3 in blue and white made up for it though. He delivered a bone-crushing hit on defence, and caught a Wyatt Uzick pass for a touchdown early in the third quarter. On his first series as a quarterback, thirdstringer Ryan Trottier put the Grizzlies up 24-donut on a 50 yard quarterback keeper off right-tackle. Trottier threw his first TD pass to wrap up the scoring, finding Owen Eyres for a 10-yard scoring strike. ● Mission’s senior squad turned the tables on GWG in the second game of the night. Last year’s AA provincial runner-ups rolled to a 36-0 win over the Grizzlies, who were playing their first ever game at that level. Both games were played with running time and no special teams.

Strickland stars at synchro provincials Chilliwack’s Olivia Strickland won two medals at the Jean Peters Provincial Synchronized Swimming Championships, held May 25-26 in Victoria. Competing for the BC Aquasonics, Strickland won bronze in the levelthree 12-and-over figures competition with a score of 58.835. Strickland teamed with Shaleigh Lachance (Coquitlam), Madeleine Leblanc (Coquitlam), Grace MacDonald (Delta), Abby Rothwell
(Delta) and Maleka Rostami (Abbotsford) to win gold in the leveltwo 12-and-under team finals. Their final score was 56.208. Strickland is part of the BC Aquasonics provincial stream, a grassroots development program. One of Canada’s oldest and largest (110 athletes) synchronized swimming clubs, BC Aquasonics has produced several Team Canada and Olympic athletes, and two Olympic coaches. Get more at aquasonics.ca
Ex-Spartan honoured by PacificSport Local Olympians Brent Hayden and Teresa Gabriele were honoured with lifetime achievement awards by PacificSport Fraser Valley at its annual general meeting on May 27. Hayden, former member of Chilliwack’s Spartan Swim Club, is one of Canada’s most decorated swimmers. Hayden won gold in the 100-
metre freestyle at the World Aquatic Championships in 2007 and climbed the podium again with a silver medal in the same distance in 2011. He wrapped up his career with a bronze medal in the 100m freestyle at the London Olympics last summer. Hayden holds the Canadian records in the 50, 100 and 200m freestyles in both the short-
course and long-course. Gabriele, a Mission native, was a mainstay with the Canadian women’s basketball program for over a decade. The five-foot-five point guard helped the national team qualify for the Olympics in 2000, and she guided the squad as far as the quarter-finals at the London Games 12 years later. Red Bull ride ends in painful trip to hospital Ricky Federau wanted to crush the competition. As he sped down the side of Grouse Mountain in the second leg of Saturday’s Red Bull Divide and Conquer race, his inner competitor was yelling at him to go, go, go! Fastest time possible! No lollygagging! How fast can you go?! The first stage of the race had ended with Federau’s teammate Joren Titus holding a five minute lead after a grueling uphill run that covered six-thousand vertical feet. Federau hopped onto his mountain bike at the top of Grouse Mountain and took off. The Chilliwack resident and former Canadian national team rider had the lead up to 11 minutes as he
prepared to leave the Baden Powell trail and get onto the Mountain Highway, an old access road. “I hit some rocks funny, and it happened so fast,” Federau said. “I crashed hard and really hurt my hand. I figured the next 35 minutes were going to be uphill and I’d just shake it off. But instead, I ended up getting a ride to hospital.” Race over for Federau, Titus and kayaker Toby Roessingh, who was waiting to carry out the third leg of the race on the Capilano River. “All I had to do was not be an idiot,” Federau chuckled. “But my competitivess got the better of me.” At the hospital, Federau learned he had a dislocated bone.
“The docs have never seen it before,” he laughed. “So to top it all off, I’m probably going to end up in some medical journal.” The doctor popped the bone back in, as best as he could, and Federau goes for x-rays this week. If they’re not good, he’ll require surgery. In the meantime, it’s painkillers aplenty and lots of time to replay the race over and over in his head. Federau and Roessingh were part of the first place team last year, joined by Edmonton runner Mike Vine. Federau had the fastest bike time last year, and Roessingh, who lived and trained in Chilliwack for several years, brought years of experience as a national
level slalom kayer and coach. Adding Titus, a Whistler resident, gave them a truly elite runner, making them favourites to repeat as champs. “We were definitely the odds-on favourites,
and so I feel I let those guys down a little bit,” Federau admitted. “But it is what it is, and we just have to move on.” Moving on for Federau won’t be easy. No matter what the x-rays say, he’s not riding bikes for at least the
next two months. “They’re definitely a write-off, so I’ll have to find some new hobby or activity to do,” he said. “Some hiking maybe? Some walking. Maybe hang out with some friends I haven’t seen in a while.”
Federau is getting married in September. With his newfound spare time, perhaps more attention to wedding duties? But not invitations. “Can’t do those,” he laughed. “You know. The hand.”

Clapp misses cut in first event Chilliwack Golf and Country Club’s Brad Clapp went two rounds at the PGA Tour Canada Times Colonist Island Savings Open, held June 3-9 at Victoria’s Uplands Golf Club. Clapp missed the cut after the second round and missed the final two days to finish in a 14-way tie for 57th overall. In his first PGA Tour Canada event, Clapp shot 73 in round one and 69 in round two for a two-day 142.

He is survived by his mother Norma, his daughter Tanya and future son-inlaw Jeremy, and son Jeff. He was predeceased by his father George A. Wilson in 1992. Al’s love of motorcycles brought him into a partnership with Lyned Motor Sports. Following that he was in real estate for many years. He enjoyed traveling, particularly by motorbike and traveled through much of the United States and parts of Mexico. He also enjoyed many trips to Reno.
