Last week’s headlinemaking move by the city to dump chicken manure on a known homeless camp, has refocused a light on the ongoing issue in the community. Jesse Wegenast of 5 and 2 Ministries, who has worked with Abbotsford’s homeless population for years, hopes the global media coverage will draw attention and eventually solutions to some of the issues surrounding homelessness. “This was so ridiculous and got so much coverage that in many ways it’s the best thing that could have happened.” He’s heard a lot of sad tales about camps being taken down, including slashing of tents and the use of bear mace to make them uninhabitable. “This population has gotten so used to being booted around by everyone from bylaw to police officers that there needs to be some real restitution of relationship,” said Wegenast. He said the city now needs to build relationships with organizations that already have the trust of the homeless community, including the Warm Zone (a shelter for women on the street), 5 and 2 Ministries and others. “The city puts no real effort in engaging with the people who are working on the ground.” Ward Draper, the director of 5 and 2 Ministries

City dumps manure on camp On June 4, city workers dumped chicken manure on a small area on the side of Gladys Avenue across from the Salvation Army, a common area for homeless people to gather and sleep. The next day, as word of the incident spread, garnering attention from media across the country, city manager George Murray issued a short statement, apologizing and taking responsibility on behalf of city hall. “We are going to work hard now to repair the damage that this has done,” he said. A day later, Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman also publicly apologized,

and spoke with some of the homeless people in the area. He said dumping chicken manure on a site frequented by the homeless is a “stain on Abbotsford’s good reputation.” Asked if anyone would lose their job, Banman said he would like to think of this as a “teaching moment on how to deal with people in a compassionate manner.” City crews cleaned up the site early Thursday morning. In an interview with The News on Friday, Murray revealed he knows who was responsible for the act, but would not disclose details.

Murray said the issue will be dealt with internally. On Friday, a spokesperson for the Salvation Army in Abbotsford said they just want to “move forward.” Deb Lowell said the organization has been inundated with calls from across the country. “...we want to try and work together with different stakeholders, including the city, to make good decisions, healthy and safe decisions, not only for our client population but everyone in our community.” For more details on this story, visit abbynews. com.

said his organization and several others, including the Cyrus Centre and the Salvation Army, worked with the city several years ago to create a protocol for clearing homeless camps. That included giving camp residents 48 hours notice and informing service groups so they can

be on hand to offer aid to those being impacted. “They stopped really using it,” said Draper, adding that his group hasn’t received a call from the city in at least two years. He said the city usually notifies the Salvation Army, but some homeless don’t want help at all.

He feels communication between the city and some of the service groups has broken down. For those living on the street, being forced to abandon their camp is nothing new. Nick Zurowski was camped out under the Happy Tree when workers

from the City of Abbotsford came by and proceeded to spread chicken manure on the camp, driving the homeless away. He didn’t go far. Now he’s siting back in an old folding chair under a tree, surrounded by several of his friends, just a little farther down Gladys. It’s a new spot to rest while he plays “cat and mouse” with the bylaw officers. “They move us around a fair bit,” said Nick. He said “mobility means survival” in the homeless community. Because he has a bad knee, he said he can’t stay in a camp in the woods “out of sight and out of mind, the way the city likes it.” As a result, he’s been dealing with bylaw officers more and more frequently. He said normally bylaw officers allow him to take his belongings when a camp is being cleared. However, if the clean-up occurs when a homeless person is not at the camp, things can change. “They just take it, (belongings), they take it to the dump,” said Norman, one of the other homeless men in the group. “So we’re told,” added Nick, explaining that sometimes they go somewhere for a meal, or to the bottle depot, and find their items gone when they return. According to the city, any abandoned items that appear to be worth more than $100 are stored for 30 days, but the rest is cleared away. But for Nick, the items are just gone. “Somebody will tell me that bylaw (personnel) was here with a truck and everything is gone.” Denise has been homeless for several years and recently was forced from her camp. “They bear sprayed our tents,” she said. Most of her belongings were destroyed during the clean-up. “It was my home.” While homeless camps are being moved on a seemingly routine basis, Continued on A4

How many homeless? 117 to 240 In September of 2011, Abbotsford had 117 homeless people within its borders, according to a report from the 2011 Fraser Valley Regional District Homelessness Survey. That number was down from the previous 2008 survey that found Abbotsford had 235 homeless people. Mission’s number dropped from 100 to 54 homeless. The report suggested Abbotsford’s drop could be the result of the city’s stricter crime prevention strategy, and a city bylaw that prevents homeless camps from being erected. However, Ward Draper, director of 5 and 2 Ministries which works with Abbotsford’s homeless, said the numbers are much higher than the study indicates. He said the homeless in Abbotsford in 2013 fluctuates from 160 to 240, depending on the time of year. He said only 30 per cent of Abbotsford’s homeless people are outside all year long, as the majority find some form of temporary housing or 90-day programs, especially during the winter. Among the 2011 survey’s other findings: T Homelessness is a result of poverty, unaffordable rental rates, family breakdown, mental health issues and drug addiction; T Nearly two-thirds are homeless for one year or longer; T More women sought shelter in transition houses in 2011, rising to 34 from the 21 in 2008; T More women were homeless in 2011, jumping to 45 per cent from 32 per cent in 2008; T Addiction was reported by 37 per cent and mental health issues by 20 per cent

A disgruntled employee who told police that his boss had tried to pay him to disfigure his estranged wife had motive to lie, a B.C. Supreme Court judge ruled on Friday in Chilliwack. Justice Brian Joyce found that the employer, Jagsir Singh Sidhu of Abbotsford, was not guilty of the charge of counselling an indictable offence not committed. Crown lawyer Wayne Norris alleged that Sidhu, who owns a printing company in Abbotsford, had offered to pay former employee Duane Waite to disfigure the face of his wife with either a razor blade or acid. It was also alleged that Sidhu wanted Waite to throw a Molotov cocktail into the home of his wife’s grandparents. Waite testified that Sidhu was to pay him $5,000 for each offence.

Sidhu and his wife were in the midst of divorce proceedings at the time, and Sidhu believed she was asking for too much money in the settlement, Norris alleged. He said the attacks were meant to be a message for her to back off and to make her unattractive. Waite, who began working for Sidhu in 2008, testified that Sidhu had about two dozen conversations with him – from spring 2010 to January 2011 – about attacking his wife. Waite said he reported the situation to Sidhu’s wife in January 2011, and she drove him to the police department to file a report. Sidhu was arrested and charged the following month. Evidence was presented in court that Waite had been laid off from his job with Sidhu’s company because he didn’t have a driver’s licence due to owing thousands of dollars to ICBC.

He was also evicted from the building where he was living, which Sidhu owned, because the building was being sold. Waite testified in court that he had been angry about these issues. Sidhu testified that he did not have any conversations with Waite about harming his wife, but he received two phone calls from him demanding money. Joyce said he had “serious problems” with Waite’s credibility and the reliability of his evidence. He said Waite has 14 criminal offences on his record, has a history of illegal drug use, and contradicted his testimony on several occasions. Joyce said Waite’s job loss and eviction were motives for him to get back at Sidhu by lying to police. He said, based on Waite’s testimony, he could not find Sidhu guilty of the allegations.

Abbotsford’s youth soccer association has a deficit of more than $70,000, according to the Magnusson Ford Mariners Football Club’s 2012/13 year-end financial statement. Dan Village, the club’s vice-president technical, said the executive of the association was aware there was a looming shortfall, but didn’t know just how large it was. The club’s income for the soccer year was nearly $640,000, but total expenses were about $662,000, making for a net loss of about $22,000 for 2012/13. The statement also lists nearly $50,000 in outstanding accounts – making the total deficit $71,488. The soccer association currently has about 1,600 to 1,700 players, on teams ranging from ages five to 18. The association is part of the Fraser Valley Youth Soccer Association. Village said the Mariners FC recently saw a change in administration, with the resignation of its general manager. He added that a lack of a designated treasurer in the association led to some of the bookkeeping problems. Of the nearly $50,000 in outstanding accounts, about $11,000 is owed to the City of Abbotsford for field fees, about $13,100 is listed under the former general manager’s MasterCard, $6,500 under the president’s MasterCard, and about $14,000 is owed to Soccer Express, a sports equipment supply company. Village said all the spending is legitimate, but the financial issues arose from the association believing that bills had been paid which in fact hadn’t. A former board member of the association, who left the position last week and did not wish to be publicly identified, stated in his letter of resignation that the club is “collecting fees and using that fee money to pay for their debt.” He is worried when

the fall season starts there will not be enough money to run the season. He told The News that in the last year, he repeatedly tried to get the association to make their financial statements available, but did not see complete documentation of spending. In March, the soccer association had to refund tickets for its annual car lottery, following a complaint filed to the Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch. The club was investigated and a fine was issued for operating a lottery without a proper licence. The association is currently giving refunds to ticket holders, though Village said some people are instead donating the ticket cost to the association. Last year, the club realized about $17,500 from the lottery. This year, about $12,000 had been generated that will have to be returned. The former board member said he is concerned the deficit will fall on parents in the form of higher registration fees. But Village said this won’t be the case. He explained that although the association raised its fees for the year, that is not intended to cover the deficit, but rather other growing costs, such as field fees. “Fee increases aren’t going to cover (the deficit); we know that. That’s going to be taken care of through other fundraisers and cutting down on our own costs.” Asked whether the organization will be able to run a soccer season in the fall, Village said the club will not shut down. He said they understand the deficit won’t be paid down in a year, and have been dealing with their biggest creditors, the city and Soccer Express, about how best to cover the shortfall. Village said the association is also planning to rein in the number of paid coaches and is looking for volunteers to cover those positions. Village hopes for a strong fall registration in order to move the club forward.

An old sore exposed

Spreading chicken manure on city property to discourage a homeless camp is an act that has painfully torn a flimsy bandage off an old sore. Last week’s incident on Gladys Avenue was picked up by media around the world, and Abbotsford took a public relations pummelling. The following day, the city manager issued an apology, albeit one bereft of explanation. The mayor followed with a hastily called press conference a day later, also accepting responsibility but providing no further details, nor action plans. Both men said they were unaware of the initiative until it had been executed. We are led to believe this was the work of a handful of lower level authorities in city hall who thought they were taking affirmative action on a long-standing problem. They were immensely wrong about the act, but right about the issue. As crude and grossly misguided as

this measure may have been, it calls attention to an issue that clearly requires more far more government effort and engagement, and that includes the provincial level. Under that layer of dung lies the large, extremely complex problem of homelessness. There are potentially 200 people who fall into that description in this city. Homelessness involves myriad factors including mental health and drug addiction, which aren’t cured by chicken manure. Business owners and residents become understandably frustrated and fed up with the presence of transient street people, and the messes they create. But chasing them from site to site is no answer – evidenced by the fact that the people who were targeted by the manure caper merely moved to another spot close by. The PR damage control must now be followed by leadership and a recommitment to long-term solutions.

Other Hand A few Fridays ago, line painters went up the road past my house, laying down bright yellow double solid lines. The next day, a paving crew arrived and ground up the road surface for more than a kilometre, replacing the old asphalt and eliminating the bright new paint before it had hardly dried. You would think that someone might have mentioned the impending road rebuild, and saved the cost of linepainting until after the new pavement was laid. It is, however, not an uncommon occurrence that the right hand doesn’t appear to know what the left is doing in this community. For example, last year residents throughout the rural areas raised a stink when they received letters indicating they would be responsible

for cleaning the ditches that fronted their properties. The upshot of that was a public meeting in which the city claimed not to have the $200,000 or so needed to do the job. Yet at the same meeting, and confirmed three hours later, the city contemplated donating $17.5 million to the YMCA. The ensuing brouhaha eventually kiboshed, at least for the time being, that expenditure, and the city managed to find the funding to clean its own ditches, though at this point my ditches are obviously not yet on the public works’ radar. Similarly, it seems, the left hand is operating independently of the right when it comes to littering, if the recent poultry poop performance by the city on a homeless gathering place. Because immediately after a red-faced mayor apologizes profusely for the hugely embarrassing faux pas, what goes out from the city but a letter telling residents not to dump yard refuse in city parks. If it’s wrong for citizens to dump grass clippings in people-gathering places, how could anyone at city hall think dumping chicken manure in

across the street from the main homeless shelter would not become a public relations disaster? That politically, to say nothing from a humanitarian standpoint, it was absolutely the wrong, and most stupid, thing to do? Is it blissful ignorance on the part of those we elect to direct our city, or ignorance clouded by arrogance on the part of those hired to do the bidding of our representatives? The mayor, in his mea culpa, said the buck stops at his office, and that of the city manager. I expect, as should all of us, that some pretty heated conversations have occurred in those offices, the result of which must be an understanding that both the left and right hands must work in concert, and that this sort of disgraceful stupidity must never happen again. After all, this wasn’t just a complete lack of judgment for those at city hall; it was an unacceptable embarrassment for every citizen of our community.

Simulated pipe bomb

Abbotsford Police shut down an area in the 2700 block of Garden Street after receiving a report of a suspicious device on Monday morning. At 9:15 a.m. staff at a business in that area called police after an employee spotted a suspicious device at the back of the property. Police shut down the area to traffic and evacuated neighbouring businesses. A witness on the scene described the device as a white plastic tube that had been taped up with nails inside. No explosive was in the pipe, but Sgt. Casey Vinet said there were some materials inside consistent with what could be found in a pipe bomb. He said police are now trying to determine whether the item was left as a prank. The Abbotsford Police Department’s (APD) new texting option for reporting non-emergency incidents has generated more than 150 texts in its first month. Const. Ian MacDonald said about one-third of those resulted in an officer being dispatched. He said these were for incidents such as a suspicious person or vehicle in the area, noise complaints or, in one case, an individual sleeping in the vestibule of a bank. No leads have yet been received via text for any of the investigations in which police have sought public information – for example, in the case of three recent robberies. “People are still using the telephone (for those),” MacDonald said. The complaint is then passed on to police officers for investigation when warranted. The service can only be accessed using a cellphone, not via a tablet or desktop computer. Dead-fish investigation finds no answers for Willband Creek mystery No explanation of why thousands of fish died Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

The Ministry of Environment (MoE) has concluded its investigation into the deaths of thousands of small fish in a large detention pond in Willband Creek Park in Abbotsford, and the incident remains a mystery. MoE spokesman David Karn said an emergency response officer tested the water temperature, pH levels, conductivity and dissolved oxygen, and determined none of those were connected to the deaths. Contamination of the water was also ruled out. “There was no obvious source of contamination and no physical sign that the fish were exposed to a chemical contaminant,” Karn said. The city’s environmental team was also notified. Rhonda Livingstone, spokesperson for the City of Abbotsford, said the fish kill is being considered an “unfortunate mystery.” “City staff will be closely monitoring the ponds to see if any new issues crop up, but the hope is that we won’t have any similar incidents and we can chalk this up to a one-time, unusual event,” she said. The dead fish were discovered on Sunday, May 12 by Abbotsford resident Gary Stewart while he was out for a walk. Stewart immediately informed the ministry, which sent out an environmental emergency response officer that afternoon. Vo l u n t e e r s with the Ravine Pa r k Salmon Enhancement

Society were also notified, and they determined that the fish were threespined stickleback. No other fish appeared to have been impacted. Doug Gosling, a member of the Stoney Creek Salmon Stalkers, which is affiliated with RPSES, said he is disappointed that the MoE is not investigating the

incident further. “Thousands of fish showing up on the shores of one of our local waterways seems to me to be important enough to garner a fairly significant investigation … “... by doing nothing much more than a little snooparound and shrugging our shoulders won’t help in preventing another

similar event.” He said the MoE should be pushed to provide answers. “I think they need to know there are lots of people interested in this event and something needs to be done to prevent it happening again.” Willband Creek Park is located in east Abbotsford at Highway 11 and Bateman Road.

Standing over his ball on the driving range at Fraserglen Golf Course on Sunday morning, knowing that his next swing could net him seven figures, was an amazing opportunity for David Yaromich. It was also incredibly stressful. The 21-year-old construction worker from Abbotsford was one of three golfers, along with Bryan Payne and Kyle Gerard, to qualify for the finals of the Rotary Club of Abbotsford’s Million Dollar Hole in One contest. Over the previous eight days, golfers had purchased buckets of balls to take shots at a hole 95 yards away. Individuals advanced to Sunday’s quarter-final round based on their proximity to the pin, and others were chosen in a random drawing. The quarter-final and semifinal results whittled the field of contenders down to the aforementioned trio, with each getting one swing to hole out from 165 yards and win $1 million. Payne’s effort settled 32 feet, eight inches from the cup, while Gerard’s ball ended up more than 94 feet away. Yaromich, the last to go, usually

The money will go towards Holmberg House, an adult hospice facility currently under construction which will be operated by the Abbotsford Hospice Society, and several other Rotary community projects. The hospice facility is named for Dave Holmberg Jr., who died of cancer in March 2011 at the age of 48. His father, philanthropist Dave Holmberg Sr., announced during the opening ceremonies that he would match any money raised beyond $25,000. So all told, this year’s fundraiser has generated nearly $59,000, pushing the Million Dollar Hole in One past the $400,000 plateau over its 13-year history. “Dave’s matching really took it to another level,” marvelled event chair Hugh Ellis. “We feel wonderful about how it went. Alas, his ball wound up 27 feet, nine inches from the cup. Finishing closest to the pin, though, yielded a prize package which included a Mercedes-Benz watch, lunch with Mayor Bruce Banman, and $500 gift certificate to the Cactus Club Cafe. Not a bad result for a relative newcomer to the sport. “I started golfing three years ago, and I’ve just been getting better and better,” Yaromich said. “I don’t take lessons, I just practice with my brothers. We go out once or twice a week.” The big winner was the Rotary Club of Abbotsford’s charity

Staring at a five-stroke deficit early in the final round of the B.C. Mid-Amateur men’s championship last Thursday at Ledgeview, Kris Yardley was unfazed. “I have a day job and two young kids, so I don’t get to play much anymore, but when I do, I just go out to enjoy it,” he explained.

That easygoing mentality paid huge dividends for the 40-year-old Maple Ridge resident. After bogeying his first two holes of the round to fall five back of Andrew Robb of Vancouver, he mustered a dramatic rally to win by a stroke. Yardley ignited his comeback by birdying four of the next eight holes, and he finished at even-par for the round and at +2 for the event.

‘This has been my lifetime dream’: Kostuk

News in a phone interview. “It’s unbelievable. “I was getting disappointed towards the end there. But when my name got called, my mood changed big-time . . . my mom hugged me and started crying. “This has just been my lifetime dream. Everything I’ve done, it’s been all for this.” Kostuk had given a verbal commitment to the baseball program at Northern Kentucky University in case the draft didn’t pan out, but within an hour of being selected, he’d agreed to terms with the Diamondbacks. He flew down to Arizona on Sunday to begin his pro career, but not before finishing off that aforementioned history project. “It’s going to be awesome going there,” he added, noting that he toured the Diamondbacks’ facilities during a baseball tourney in Arizona last fall. Kostuk’s prodigious right arm is what has the Diamondbacks intrigued. Corey Eckstein, his coach with the Abbotsford Cardinals of the B.C. Premier Baseball League, said that Kostuk possesses possibly the best outfield arm in Canada. From

his centre field spot, he rockets the ball back to the infield at 94 miles per hour. Kostuk, who measures 6’2”, 205 pounds, also pitches, and his fastball touches 90 mph. Kostuk led the Cardinals in hits (21), home runs (2) and RBI (16), and was second on the squad in batting average (.318). His performance drew the attention of the Canadian junior national squad (it doesn’t hurt that Eckstein is an assistant coach with Team Canada), and he’s been summoned for trips to Orlando, Fla. and the Dominican Republic in recent months. Eckstein spoke highly of Kostuk’s work ethic. “When he got selected for the Team Canada tryout, it took it to a whole new level,” he said. “He’s been down at the facility almost every day for the last two months now. He really wanted it, you could tell.” Whatever happens in his career from this point, the unadulterated joy of draft day will stick with Kostuk for a long time. “There’s so many kids who would love to be there (drafted),” he marveled. “But it was my name that got called, and I was just going nuts.”

rumblings about Canada West tiering for a couple of years now, revolving around the notion that the football schools would break off and form a higher division in all sports, with non-football schools comprising a lower echelon. That particular vision didn’t come to fruition, much to the relief of schools like UFV and Trinity Western. But the concept reared its head again as a basketballonly initiative, as the conference sought to make scheduling accommodations for its newest member, MacEwan University of Edmonton. MacEwan is the conference’s 17th school, and basketball is the only sport in which every institution participates. The controversial realignment was one of several options circulated via email several weeks ago and voted on at the AGM. The initial email referred to the divisions as “Pioneer” and “Explorer,” a sales job that Tuchscherer termed “comical.” That proposal, though, did garner the most votes last week. But four of the six teams in the smaller division didn’t have a vote – UBC-O, Mount Royal, UNBC and MacEwan were still provisional members at the time (UBC-O became a permanent member at the AGM, but not until after the basketball vote). One of the new alignment’s absurdities from UFV’s perspective is that they would no longer play Trinity Western, their local rival located 20 minutes down the road in Langley, not to mention provincial rivals UBC and Victoria. Nor will other teams which share the same city, like Calgary/ Mount Royal and Alberta/MacEwan, play each other in the regular season. Olfert hinted that UFV won’t take the decision lying down, though he declined to go into detail on potential avenues of recourse. “We’d like to think we can put something forward to create a schedule that respects those members that have been in Canada West for a long time, but also still allows us to compete against our local rivals,” he said.

Jim was born August 12, 1935 at Pelly Farm, Yukon Territory. He spent his early childhood in the Yukon, than spent the rest of his life in the Fraser Valley. Jim taught his family the importance of working hard and spent most of it as a floor installer. Jim loved nature, and spent much time fishing, hunting, gardening to feed his family. He showed us all to live life to the fullest and was loved by many. Jim spent his retirement years living with his son Stuart and his family. Jim is survived by his children Tracy; Stuart (Jacoba); and Gord ; grandchildren: Mark (Becky); Ryan(Amanda); Jackie; Destiny; Dennis; Denyce; Danae, Dezrae; Rene; Travis; Marie; and great grandchildren: Madison; Bobby; Destiny; MacKenna; Kathleen; Bradey; and numerous nieces and nephews, and cousins. Sarah Cathrine Langdon-Davies Sarah Cathrine Langdon-Davies (nee Lee), 98 yrs., of Abbotsford, B.C. passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at Maplewood House Abbotsford. Born to parents James and Edith Lee in the family home at Langley Prairie, B.C. ( now Murrayville) on August 15, 1914, Sarah was a faith-filled, loving person who enriched the lives of all those who were blessed to know her. She attended school in Murrayville up to eighth grade and then went on to Langley High for her last 3 years after which she travelled to Toronto, Ontario where she graduated from Secretarial School. She then returned to B.C. and worked for B.C. Electric in Vancouver, meeting her husband Walter there and beginning their family. She was predeceased by her oldest son Gordon and granddaughter Crystal, as well as 10 siblings, Hubert, Samuel, William, Kathleen, Dorothy, Norman, Edith, Richard, Gordon and Helen. Sarah is survived by sons David (Connie) Langdon-Davies and Terry Langdon-Davies, and daughter Barbara Sikora, 7 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and 1 great great-grandchild. Also survived by the youngest of the 12 Lee children Jessie Middleton of Abbotsford and many loving extended family members. Sarah was affectionately known as “Sally” to friends and was someone who always took the time to enjoy the small pleasures in life and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. Sarah enjoyed greatly her flowers and gardening. She also loved her Church and was a member of the St. Matthew’s Anglican Church of Abbotsford ever since moving to Abbotsford with her family in 1948. She was also a dedicated member of the Order of Eastern Star for many years attaining the position of Worthy Matron. Sarah’s funeral will take place at St. Matthew’s Church on Friday, June 14 at 1 pm with reception and refreshments to follow at the church.

The Pacific Institution is seeking volunteers living in the Abbotsford area to join its Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC).

CACs are voluntary, independent committees with three primary roles: 1) impartial observers of correctional operations and programs; 2) impartial advisors to CSC on programs and facilities and; 3) a link between CSC, offenders and the surrounding communities.

Two years ago, when I was struggling to decide between attending Dasmesh Punjabi School or public school for grades 11 & 12, I was unsure what would benefit me the most. It was Dasmesh School’s first time offering grade 11 and 12 and I was a little nervous about being a part of the pioneer grad class. I weighed my options, and decided to stay at Dasmesh.

The Board of Education is proud to salute the Abbotsford School District’s graduating class of 1,560 strong this year from all our schools, as noted below. Many of our graduates have achieved scholarships, hundreds of our graduates will be entering college and university programs in the coming year, while numerous others are starting careers, working or travelling. School Spirit Activities: TERRY FOX RUN / WELCOME BARBECUE

CHRISTMAS DINNER

Every year, the school hosts a full turkey dinner for Bakerview students, their families, and some community members. The Optimist Club supports this effort.

The Youth Care Workers organized a barbecue after the Terry Fox Run in September to welcome students back to school.

PAJAMA PROJECT FUNDRAISER

Staff and students wore pajamas to school and collected donations in support of the Pajama Project. This project supports grieving mothers who have lost a child.

PINK SHIRT DAY

On Anti-Bullying Day in February, staff and students wore pink to school, participated in a dress-up photo booth and created a sign containing anti-bullying messages. The New Beginnings class won the Pink Shirt Day contest.

BUDDY READING TO GRADE 1s

In December, twenty-one students from Bakerview partnered with a Grade 1 class for a buddy reading activity and the Bakerview students donated the children’s books to the Grade 1s.

MINI SCHOOL RUN FOR WATER & WATER SCHLEPPING COMPETITION

On May 22nd, students from Bakerview and New Beginnings participated in their own Mini School Run for Water to raise awareness of the water situation in Ethiopia. They also had a water schlepping contest. A few school-wide fundraisers helped to raise money for the cause, a Rent A Tie day, samosa sale, and hot dog sale.

SPIRIT WEEK

The Leadership Group meets weekly at lunch to promote various school spirit activities. During a week in November, staff and students had a moustache day, twin day, and wacky hair day.

BAKERVIEW’S GOT TALENT

On May 8th, Bakerview had a school Talent Show showcasing the talents of 7 individual performances and 3 group performances.

Class Projects: EDIBLE CLASSROOM GARDEN

The Boy’s Pre-Vocational Program has been working hard to build their Edible Garden Classroom. They are working to answer the question, “How can growing our own food grow our view of our community?”

One of the Grade 10 Pod classes released salmon fry into Ravine Park.

CITY WORK EXPERIENCE

Support & Mentorship: BAKERVIEW’S BREAKFAST PROGRAM

Staff volunteer to help prepare and serve a healthy breakfast to students during the week. On average, twenty-five students show up to eat each morning.

F.I.E.R.C.E. GIRLS GROUP

F.I.E.R.C.E. is a girls group that was initiated at Bakerview this school year by a group of female staff. F.I.E.R.C.E. stands for Feminine, Inspiration, Empowerment, Respect, Compassion, and Engagement. This group meets outside of the school day and has participated in various activities together, ranging from self-defense, cooking, card making, a clothing exchange, and attending the musical, “Beauty & the Beast”.

DEVON R.B. CLIFFORD MEMORIAL ROCK CAMP

Five Bakerview students, who show a commitment to learn music but who have economic barriers for formal lessons, were selected to participate in free music lessons this year. They practiced together twice per week for two hours a day after school and put on a final performance at the school’s Talent Show.

SCHOOL DISTRICT WORK EXPERIENCE

A new initiative put in place this year that connects School District Maintenance Staff mentors with individual students. We are looking forward to fully implementing this next year and we are looking for business to partner with our school.

Awards & Recognitions: UFV EXCELLENCE ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIP Erika Moate, one of our graduating students has won a UFV Entrance Scholarship worth $3000.

DISTRICT DOGWOOD SCHOLARSHIP Erika has also won a District Dogwood Scholarship for her Community Services Project, which involved teaching other youth how to knit a quilt to donate to charity.

Bakerview has a partnership with the City of Abbotsford where students work with City staff in natural areas projects. Students learn important skills and earn an honourarium while making a valuable contribution to our community. Thanks to all the Parks and Rec people involved!

BLADE RUNNERS PROGRAM

More than forty students completed industry recognized training in: First Aid, Traffic Control, Health and Safety, Food Safe, Forklift and Skid Steer Loader. Thanks to Calvin and Brian for their work and support in this area.

THE YOUTH HUB

The Community Hub is a designated building where our partner agencies have dedicated office space and regularly scheduled times to meet with our students. The following agencies are integral partners in the “Hub” (Youth Health Clinic, MCFD, Therapist, Impact, Abbotsford Community Services).

ABBOTSFORD COMMUNITY FOUNDATION Eleven Bakerview graduates have been selected to receive Abbotsford Community Foundation Awards to help them pursue post secondary education.
