Owner delighted with Star product ROGER KNOX Morning Star Staff

David Black knows a good thing when he sees it. Black is chairman and founder of Black Press, starting his company when he invested in his first weekly newspaper, the Williams Lake Tribune, in 1975. Since then, Black has grown his company that includes 75 titles in B.C. as well as newspapers in Alberta, Ohio, Washington state and Hawaii into the largest private newspaper publisher in Canada. Part of that chain is the Vernon-based Morning Star, which Black’s company bought in 1989 from founders Bill Allum, Don Kendall, Ken McCluskey and Wayne Porter. “Very quickly, The Morning Star became one of the top papers for Black Press,” said Black from his Victoria office. “It’s a fabulous paper. It does the job we want from our papers in the community editorially and from an advertising point of view. “The press centre we’ve built there prints a lot of other papers and has been a big success for us. They have really good people there, they’ve always had a good staff and it’s a great staff now with a great editor (Glenn Mitchell). It all works there.” Black also knows the newspaper industry is changing, but there is still a niche for the community newspaper, and The Morning Star serves its niche brilliantly.

“Very quickly, The Morning Star became one of the top papers for Black Press.” — David Black

L a r g e urban centres throughout North America are watching their daily newspapers fold with a push to move their products onto the Internet. While Black concedes that might be a necessity in a larger market, cities the size of Vernon still want and demand a physical newspaper. “If you want local news in Vernon, you get it in The Morning Star, you get it three times a week, and they’re reading it and that’s enough for most people,” said Black.

“They don’t have to go online and search for Vernon news the other four days a week. “I don’t think there’s any question people still want to get the physical paper product, take it out on their deck and enjoy their morning coffee while reading the paper.” Black acknowledges that advertising has played a huge role in making The Morning Star and his company a success. For some people, he said, advertising in a print product is news and that’s why Black sees advertising in print as a distinct advantage over advertising online. “Advertising in a print product is not seen

as a nuisance or detraction from the product, it’s seen as a benefit,” he said. “Because your eye can skip over so easily if you’re not interested in an advertisement, you carry on through the paper. If it catches your eye, say it’s a product you want to know something more about it like availability, colours or pricing, you read a little bit about it and you might go buy it. “Take a grocery ad for example. People go through those ads looking for items on sale. Same with car ads. Because almost all of our money comes from advertising, it’s important to have a medium where advertising is desirable. The problem everybody has is that advertising on the Internet isn’t that desirable. It gets in the way, it pops up, it’s a nuisance.” While change is inevitable, the more things change, the more they stay the same for Black, who envisions The Morning Star sill being the newspaper of record in the North Okanagan for another 25 years. “Things change, it’s inevitable, and we’re going to have to change with the times,” said Black. “But we have good people in Vernon, good management and we’ll make those adjustments as we go forward. “We’ll keep that paper as the top medium in the city.”

Thanks for the memories

I

t’s difficult to believe that 25 years have passed since the launching of The Morning Star. Actually it’s shocking and cause for both celebration and concern, not to mention fodder for the beginning of a potential mid-life crisis on my part, all rolled into one, as like the paper itself, I’m still here too. Wow. Much of life, like my kids these days, is spent planning, preparing and questioning what one should do with one’s life, and then one day the math of the days spent on Earth begins to add up, and, Glenn Mitchell whammo, not only is that what you’re going to do when you grow up, you already did it. Heavy sigh. OK, I got that out of the way. The other side of the coin is I can’t think of a better way to spend a good part of my life attempting to help document the good, the bad, the wonderful and the not-so-wonderful history-on-the-run in, let’s face it, the best place in Canada to live, raise kids, enjoy a four-season playground. And to think it started 25 years ago. It seems like yesterday Don Kendall called me up at my parents’ house, where I was recuperating from surgery, and said he had something to talk to me about. I took that as good news because I’d called him a few times earlier at the The Vernon Daily News, where he was sports editor, asking about job opportunities. But he was about to unload a bombshell on me, right there on my parents’ doorstep on a sunny spring afternoon. Apparently he and some other employees from the paper had left to start their own publication called something or other and it was going to be a free circulation, morning, community newspaper, delivered twice a week, and they couldn’t pay me much but if I was willing to come onboard it should be fun and.....or something like that, it was a lot to take in. “Yeah, sure,” I said, likely still in a little bit of shock, besides I was healthy enough to return to work, and I didn’t have a better offer and I got to work in my hometown, and helping launch a brand new newspaper sounded like an exciting opportunity and so it began. I remember, at first, not only was there no newspaper yet, there was no office yet either, as we worked out of Wayne Porter’s old Real Estate Review office in an upper floor of the Vernon Credit Union building. In a pretty small room, there was Kathy Rooke on the phone trying to drum up carriers, Wayne King going behind curtains in the corner to shoot PMTs (photo mechanical transfers that put dot patterns on pictures for the press), and me on a brand new Mac, which was foreign to me, trying to write a sports column on going to a Mosquito baseball game at Lakeview Park and being coralled into umping the darn thing. And the rest of the men and women, including Ken McCluskey and Bill Allum, rushing around selling ads and talking up a product that physically didn’t exist yet......until one Saturday night at VIP printers where we all gathered and watched the first edition come off the presses, thinking it was a miracle of some sorts. We celebrated heartily and then slowly realized we had to pull off two of these babies the following week and the week after that and.... But people seemed to like it, my old political

MITCHELL’S MUSINGS

FIRE

science professor, I remember, said he read “every word of it and cover to cover” of that first edition and advertisers thankfully appreciated it, and I like to think the bond with the community is still there and will continue for many more years. Of course now we have our own building, and press, and website, and we’re three times a week plus a Daily, and we’re on Facebook and Twitter and it’s all a bit much to take for an old man like me. However the one constant in this industry, and in life I guess, is change and although the speed of things can get to us people celebrating silver anniversaries, I have a feeling it’s always been that way. Thanks for the memories, everybody, and here’s to many more great years together.

The press never stops in Vernon of press operations, which are located at the back of The Morning Star. Tonnellier said it takes about two hours to print The Two-and-a-half loads of newsprint. About 3,600 pounds Morning Star with approximately 26,000 copies produced an of black ink, 1,200 pounds of each colour ink. Throw in 5,000 plates (aluminum printing plates that hour during the average press run. Black Press also prints publications from Kamloops, newspapers are printed on) and you get, on average, what Kelowna, Salmon Arm, Sicamous, Nakusp, Revelstoke, Black Press goes through in a week to print The Morning Star Clearwater and Barriere. and other publications around the region. The press was moved to Vernon from Sicamous shortly On a monthly average, Black Press does approximately after Black Press bought The Morning Star. five million newspaper pages and 11 million flyer insertions. Tonnellier came to the company from Vernon Interior “The only day the presses are quiet is Sunday during the Printers, which printed the first edition of The Morning Star day, then they start up again at 8 p.m. to print the Kamloops in June 1988. Since then, he has seen many changes when it Daily News,” said Gus Tonnellier, Black Press’ director comes to printing newspapers. “What’s really different is we now have full colour presses and a direct to plate system,” said Tonnellier. “There are no more PICK UP negatives, no more cameras and no more OR developers.” “The press here has had three additions DELIVERY added on and we’ve gone from six printing units up to 24.” The press employs about 50 people including Sharon Bain, press clerk, who has been with The Morning Star since its inception. Bain started as mail room supervisor. roger knox

“My job was making sure the flyers went into the papers and the flyers were inserted by hand,” said Bain. “My co-supervisor was Mike Jaik, who recently passed away. We worked all night on that first paper, which was printed at VIP (Vernon Interior Printers). We used to wait for the trucks to come and pick up the papers. “We’d work until the paper was done. It made for some very late nights.” Today, those flyers are now inserted by an Alphaliner, a 22-pocket inserting machine which has the ability of stuffing 22 flyers at once inside a newspaper. “It’s helped a lot,” smiled Bain. “We insert 11 million flyers a month.” The main reason the press operation in Vernon is successful, said both Tonnellier and Bain, is its people. “The success of the company rests with some of our longtime employees,” said Tonnellier, pointing out that pressmen Dan Stewart and Paul Dolenuck have been with Black Press for more than 25 years, as have mail room employees Sandy Nelson and Barb Biluk. Kathy Wood brings nearly 30 years of experience as she was with Black Press in Sicamous before operations were moved to Vernon. Pre-press manager Wayne Ostafew and current mail room supervisor Krzysztof Baginski each have more than 20 years under their belts.

Still the right model roger knox Morning Star Staff

The Morning Star was a victim of its own success. Launched in June 1988 by four men – Bill Allum, Don Kendall, Ken McCluskey and Wayne Porter – the community newspaper based in Vernon was a hit right out of the gate with readers and with advertisers, publishing huge newspapers. According to current Black Press president and CEO Rick O’Connor, The Morning Star was looking for a bigger company to help them finance the paper. “What was happening was they were putting out these papers but their receivables were stacking up,” said O’Connor. “A lot of advertisers paid in 90 days so they were looking for help. They came to us and we worked out a deal.” That was in early 1989. Black Press owned papers in Salmon Arm, Sicamous and Kamloops at the time, along with a printing operation in Sicamous. The printing operation, as part of the new deal, was moved to Vernon and Black Press bought the building the paper and press is currently housed in on 25th Avenue, and moved The Morning Star from its then offices on 29th Street (where DJ’s Perogie Kitchen is today). Since then, the company has watched The Morning Star become one of its most profitable assets. “It’s been a fantastic situation for us, as we’ve owned the paper now going on 24 years,” said O’Connor. “It’s been a wonderful experience. We love the town of Vernon and we think we have contributed significantly to the employment base.” “We’re still a significant employer in the City of Vernon.” While daily newspapers in metropolises continue to struggle, community newspapers continue to thrive. The Morning Star philosophy since day one has been to devote itself to covering the community and have the paper delivered to homes and businesses in the morning. “The future still looks bright,” said O’Connor. “In Vernon, we don’t rely on subscriptions to drive our business. We have delivered three times a week, free, faithfully to doorsteps for 25 years. “That’s the right model. It was the right model 25 years ago, and it’s still the right model today.” And while there is a push to take newspapers online – and The Morning Star currently publishes its three weekly editions on its website, www. vernonmorningstar.com – O’Connor doesn’t see the physical newspaper product being replaced anytime soon. “I don’t doubt we’ll transition somewhat more to digital,” he said. “Our website in Vernon has high traffic, but I don’t see that as replacing what we do in print anytime soon.”

“We love the town of Vernon and we think we have contributed significantly to the employment base.” — Rick O’Connor

Solid gold support for chronic inflammation

CurcuminRichTM, more than spicy!

TM

Anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant supplement A century ago, two chemists isolated curcumin, the primary active compound in turmeric root (Curcuma longa). Turmeric has long been used in India in curries and as a medicinal herbal for inflammation. Curcumin gives turmeric its vibrant yellow colour and its medicinal qualities. An explosion of scientific research has expanded our understanding of curcumin’s antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antiinflammatory action, especially important for neurological health and disease prevention. While curcumin shows excellent results in trials, most forms are poorly absorbed and are rapidly metabolized and excreted by the body. Dosages as high as 12 grams of curcumin powder have failed to significantly raise blood levels. The key to realizing the benefits of curcumin is to enhance its bioavailability.

• inhibits tumor growth and promotes the death of cancer cells Curcumin’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds can help reduce risk for neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Researchers observed that elderly residents (aged 70–79) in rural India who eat large amounts of turmeric have the lowest incidence of Alzheimer’s in the world: 4.4 times lower than that of Americans. This led to successful laboratory studies and clinical trials are now underway to measure the impact of curcumin in treatment of Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases (Frautschy). Scientific studies have also found that curcumin protects DNA against damage caused by toxins in the environment — toxins that increase cancer risk. In a recent study, curcumin supplements were given to people in a community with a high level of arsenic in their groundwater. Arsenic causes severe oxidative damage to DNA. Blood samples prior to curcumin supplementation showed increased levels of free radicals, damage to cell membranes, and severe DNA damage. After three months of curcumin intervention there was increased antioxidant activity, and a reduction in free radicals, cell damage, and DNA damage (Biswas).

Natural Factors CurcuminRich Turmeric Root Extract contains Theracurmin™, a turmeric extract created using proprietary dispersion technology to improve absorption and bioavailability. Extremely fine granulation and suspension of particles gives Theracurmin an absorption rate 27 times greater than regular curcumin, and better than all other commercial forms tested. The result is a dramatic increase in the level of curcumin measured in the blood stream. Curcumin has many health benefits. It: • protects against DNA damage • fights inflammation, as well as pharmaceutical anti-inflammatories • reduces oxidation of LDL cholesterol, a risk factor for atherosclerosis • relieves symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and postoperative inflammation • reduces risk of neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s

Daily supplementation with CurcuminRich, thanks to its superior bioavailability, reduces inflammation, provides antioxidant protection to your cells, and can reduce your risk for chronic degenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s and cancer. Not bad for “the curry spice”.

“We’re really successful because of our readers who have been with us through thick and thin...”

Morning Star Staff

Advertisers, staff, readers. Ian Jensen was in a thankful mood when asked about what makes The Morning Star such a successful paper. “We’re only as good as the people we have working for us,” said Jensen, who took over as publisher of The Morning Star in February 2012. “Over 25 years, we’ve had very dynamic people from top to bottom. From the front counter, the newsroom, creative, production, sales, circulation, the mail room and the press department. “Without our people, we are nothing.” Those are the people inside the brown building with a newly designed front facade on 25th Avenue. There are the people outside the building who make The Morning Star a success. Many carriers and drivers, those who deliver the paper to North Okanagan doorsteps and businesses, have been with the paper since day one in June 1988. Jensen said the paper owes them a great big thank you. The paper would be nothing without the advertising, added Jensen, pointing out companies like Butcher Boys, the car dealers and City Furniture which have been displaying ads inside The Morning Star since the first edition. City Furniture took

— Ian Jensen out a full-page ad that appeared on page five of the inaugural issue of The Morning Star on June 12, 1988. “The Morning Star has been part of our advertising in Vernon since its inception,” said City Furniture owner Ruby Sharma. “It is a surprise that it has been 25 years. Time goes by. I remember when (newspaper founders) Don Kendall and Bill Allum called me and told me what they were doing. “We feel very strongly about The Morning Star and will continue to advertise with the paper. I think it is one of the best media for our local market.” One group Jensen had the most praise for is those who take the time to peruse the pages of The Morning Star: you, the reader. “We’re really successful because of our readers who have been with us through thick and thin, the ups and downs in the community,” said Jensen. “They’re a driving force of ours everyday. We try to bring them the best product we can. The best stories, the best photos, the best ads. They’re one of the main reasons why we

do it all.” One thing that has helped the Morning Star stick around for a quarter of a century is its community involvement. The Morning Star sponsors numerous community events such as Relay For Life, events for the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation, plus several golf tournaments, and staff members are involved with community groups such as Rotary or minor sports. “We believe we’re a big part of this community and with that comes responsibility and giving back,” said Jensen, who became only the sixth publisher in the paper’s history. Jensen comes along at a time when community newspapers such as The Morning Star are still a strong commodity, but are changing the way they deliver the news. While the paper remains delivered free to thousands of North Okanagan homes and businesses, The Morning Star has also moved its product online (www. vernonmorningstar. com). “Our core product

is still our newspaper and we don’t want anyone to forget that,” said Jensen. “We’ve been here 25 years and plan to be here a lot longer. But the Internet is part of everybody’s daily life now and it’s another opportunity for us to get our message across to our readers and advertisers.” The full Morning Star paper is available electronically – called E-editions – online on days the paper is published (Wednesday, Friday and Sunday). When breaking news is happening, information is delivered on the paper’s website. “Our numbers indicate that almost 11,000 different computers view our website on a monthly basis, and out of those 11,000 computers, people looking at more than 200,000 pages per month,” said Jensen. “Those are big numbers. You take our circulation of 31,600 plus add another 11,000 computers, and we’re in a lot of homes and businesses.” The Morning Star also has a Facebook page, and through that page and its own website, people are being drawn electronically by the always popular Morning Star contests. One of the first contests was a chance to win tickets to the IPE. The contest drew 900 entries in only two days. In the winter, The Morning Star ran the first Most Popular Burger in Vernon contest where people could vote for what they thought was the best burger. The contest received more than 14,000 votes. “People love to win things and the contests are another way for people to do that,” said Jensen, adding the paper has given away tickets to the Vernon Vipers, golf courses and events like Pamper Your Palate. “We’ll be doing a lot more different ideas for contests.” Coming soon will be your chance to win and vote on who has the best chicken wings in Vernon.

Entertainment enters the building

A

fter playing the bars throughout most of the ‘80s, I started in the darkroom of the old location of The Morning Star in the spring of 1990. With no actual entertainment section or reporter, I volunteered to cover concerts and such since I was already enrolled in a journalism program. Upon completion, I returned to The Star and together with the help of then publisher Don Kendall, we created the entertainment section and he put me at the helm. It was an exciting time as The Star was in a new location Vlado Forgac and had undergone a complete redesign. Some people thought it would be a challenge to fill three-to-five entertainment pages three times a week in such a small market, but my blind faith and enthusiasm begged to differ. Kristin Froneman recently asked me to lament on my time at The Star in light of the paper’s 25th anniversary. Thinking back I have to admit I had some great times at The Star mainly because of the people I worked with — many of whom are still there. There was Glenn Mitchell’s wisdom and patience, Kevin Mitchell’s dry sense of humour, Katherine Mortimer’s infec-

forgac flashback

tious laugh, Richard Rolke’s blunt banter, Brad Moore’s mentorship and on and on it goes. In fact, when it comes to memorable moments in my nine years at The Star, there are simply too many to mention so I’ll try and pick the highlights. I’m very grateful to have met so many passionate artists and musicians in the North Okanagan, some of whom became good friends. I recall Neil Wong’s early push towards the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre, later continued by an equally enthusiastic Dave Hesketh. There was Ken Smedley’s dedication to the wonderful and amazing Caravan Farm Theatre productions, Buzz Ware and Adele M. Kuyek Grout and Asparagus Theatre in Armstrong, Mary Huggins, Jim and Kathy Brown, Sarah Maclean, Voni Grindler, Dave Abbott, Dave Sayer and Randy (Bones) Jones at Powerhouse Theatre (many more missed here). There’s also Ken Mather at O’Keefe Historic Ranch, violin virtuoso Denis Letourneau from the OSO, local treasures Paul and Melina Moore (who actually came to the valley via Paul from New York), the staff at Vernon Community Music School, the Vernon Art Gallery and the Vernon Museum, all of whom made my job a breeze. I could go on dropping names like Bob Oldfield, Dave Brotsky, Kevin Kienlein, Christine Pilgrim, Henry Piovesan, Cathy-Ann Wells, Manfred Harter, Les Copeland,

Randy Rauck and John Noren. As for memorable experiences, there are some gems that stand out. Music ‘91 was a government-funded program, giving smaller communities major concerts. I got to see Bryan Adams perform for about 10,000 in Revelstoke and MC Hammer for a similar number in Penticton. Leaving the MC Hammer show, I could feel tension in the air but didn’t think much of it as I headed back to Vernon. Shortly thereafter, things erupted into one of the worst riots the South Okanagan has ever seen. Also in the early ‘90s, the Creighton Valley Jam was able to bring some worldclass talent to what was essentially the “middle of nowhere” — just outside of Lumby in a spectacular setting. Some of us got to see the late great Waylon Jennings as well as the Everly Brothers with English guitarist Albert Lee. I got to interview Jennings and spoke briefly with him at the Vernon Lodge — still amazes me that it even happened. Then there were Restoration Music Festivals at Paddlewheel Park which brought us Wide Mouth Mason, Powder Blues, Spirit of the West and many more. My band, Casual Sax, actually got to back up famous Vernonite Darby Mills. Then there were two festivals out at Historic O’Keefe Ranch in the late ‘90s, one of which I got to perform at with the John Noren Band — thanks to Beth Gibson and Dave Hesketh for that.

From Roots and Blues to Nickelback (almost) Continued from D3

But perhaps the coolest, most unexpected and most electric evening I’ve ever encountered was when Supertramp frontman Roger Hodgson played the Vernon Lodge ballroom in the late ‘90s. I got to open for him with the John Noren Band and then Hodgson put on a one-man show that I will simply never forget. Another memorable evening took place at the Vernon Recreation Centre in the mid-’90s thanks to Linda Tanaka of the Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival. Linda brought Miriam Makeba and Hugh Masekela to little ol’ Vernon. That night, we got a powerful glimpse into African culture — simply outstanding and unexpected. Some may recall Bella Vista Winery as Larry Passmore tried to turn the spectacular hillside setting into a live venue. Well, one event particularly stands out for me as I got to see the late Long John Baldry put on a terrific show to close off what was an amazing career that wove its way through the history of rock ‘n’ roll. Vernon has produced a number of wellknown artists and musicians over the years but the ones that stand out during my tenure include Kristi Stafford, Lee Dinwoodie and Dan Powter. I recall visiting with Dan and his producer Jeff Long (Image Audio) at Jeff ’s Alpine Centre studio listening to songs that Dan was pitching to record companies. It was an uphill battle that Dan eventually won in a huge way through hard work and persistence.

The Everly Brothers play the Creighton Valley Jam near Lumby in the early ‘90s. Attending the Midsummer’s Eve event at the Caetani House was also a fave, particularly because I got to spend an afternoon with Sveva Caetani about a year before she died. I was interviewing her for a North Okanagan families series we were running and in typical reporter fashion, I wanted to get in and get out as fast as I could as I had a lot of work to do. But Sveva wasn’t going to be rushed. She was a fascinating woman with a deep curiosity and at times it felt like

she was in fact interviewing me. I’m very grateful to have spent an afternoon with someone who was truly larger than life — and whose legacy lives on. I’m also very grateful to have gotten to know artist Tonny Moser who passed away in 2008. She was a ball of energy and loaded with character. A huge fan of her work, I used to have two of her pieces including my favourite, the Bella Vista scenic which was used on the labels of Bella Vista Winery.

Unfortunately, that particular framed print fell off a wall one year and was freakishly completely destroyed. I’ll eventually replace it. There are so many more highlights but I should sign off. But before I do, I wanted to leave you with one more anecdote. I believe it was 1998 when I was contacted by a fellow from Aberta managing an up-and-coming hard rock band. He had forwarded the band’s bio and pic to me and wanted to know if I’d be interested in interviewing the band since they were about to play a downtown Vernon nightclub (I believe it was The Hydrant). I guess I had become a little cocky because I felt I knew where the music industry was going and hard rock was going the way of the mullet. He tried to convince me that they were going to the top and I was poo-pooing him, pointing to the success of grunge. So I politely turned down the interview for probably the first and only time figuring I’d never hear of the band again. Boy was I wrong. That band was Nickelback. Lesson learned. I left The Morning Star at the end of 1998 but I’m oh so grateful for all the memories. Here’s hoping many more will get to experience wonderful North Okanagan moments over the next 25 years. Cheers! — After producing a political talk show for the Vision Network, Vlado Forgac is now producing his own viral video show as well as running a marketing company with former Vernon mayoral candidate Patrick Davies.

Morning Star reporters are on the beat richard rolke Morning Star Staff

It’s often said that local government is the closest to the people, and The Morning Star has been helping facilitate that relationship for 25 years. Three times a week, the publication provides residents with the latest happenings at municipalities, regional districts, school boards and First Nations. “You are a vital conduit to the community,” said Howie Cyr, Enderby’s mayor, of ensuring his constituents are aware of what elected officials are doing on their behalf. In recent years, The Morning Star’s focus has included the lobbying efforts by Enderby politicians and residents to attract more physicians. The coverage has included articles, editorials and columns. “You do a phenomenal job in covering the community,” said Cyr. And The Morning Star’s community includes: seven municipalities, three regional districts with seven electoral areas, three school districts, two First Nations bands, Okanagan Regional Library and the Interior Health Authority. Patrick Nicol, a veteran Vernon councillor and Regional District of North Okanagan chairperson, is confident residents are served well by the written word.

Voice of the community Continued from D6

“The writers who launched The Morning Star in 1988 through to the present, were and remain stern advocates for simplicity and understatement,” he said. But beyond politics, Nicol believes one of the strengths of The Morning Star is the stories it portrays of real people. “It adds richness to the realm of common humanity, examining life’s gifts and difficult challenges,” he said. “It is quite a community voice, delivering more than its founders could have imagined.” Rene Talbot, Columbia-Shuswap Regional District director for Falkland, knows where to turn for assistance. “When I have an issue I need to promote, I get a hold of the paper for a write-up. I hear a lot about the articles when they are published,” he said. Among the Falkland issues that have been highlighted in The Morning Star were demands for improved health care in the region and the possibility of the community being moved out of the Okanagan-Shuswap federal riding. According to Talbot, The Morning Star ensures CSRD can maintain open communications with residents. “People see the information about a public meeting and they show up and get involved,” he said. “It’s very important for people out here. It’s

“It’s the main newspaper that we read.” — Rene Talbot the main newspaper that we read.” In Cherryville, the arrival of The Morning Star Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays has created some traditions. “The first thing I do in the morning is run out and get the paper,” said Eugene Foisy, RDNO director for Cherryville. “Everyone stops at Frank’s Store to get their paper.” And like the other communities in the North Okanagan, Cherryville has counted on The Morning Star to promote issues of importance and special events such as Cherryville Days. “It means a whole lot to us out here,” said Foisy. “Everyone wants the paper and there is a real need for local news. We get great coverage.”

S

o where were you on Sunday, June 12, 1988? I can’t remember the specifics, but it would have been three days after my 12th birthday, which means I was likely playing with some of the new toys I received on the big day (probably G.I. Joe, Transformers or He-Man). If not that, then I was busy burning out my retinas playing Super Mario Bros. on my Nintendo Entertainment System. Of course, that date holds a little more significance to me now as it is the day the very first Vernon Morning Star came off the press. I recently got my hands on a Graeme Corbett first edition, and as I delicately thumbed through its yellowing pages, I got a glimpse of what life was like back in the day. It was a 56-pager (which, coincidentally, is the same as this 25th anniversary tab), and looking to make a splash, management of the day went with a single colour photo on the front — an eye-catching shot by Don Weixl of slalom skier Scott Penry giving the “thumbs up” as he completed a swooping turn on Okanagan Lake. The lead story (aside from the paper announcing itself to the world) was of then-premier Bill Vander Zalm, with his high-voltage smile, pledging to erase the deficit (some things never change). Scanning through the newspaper ads, I came to realize a lot of local businesses have hung around the last quarter century. Many of them are still

at random

supporting The Morning Star today – Cooper’s Foods, J.C. Bradley Jewellers, Peters Tirecraft, Baron Insurance, Summit Financial, Rosman RV, Sun Valley Sports and Swan Lake Nurseryland, to name a few, all had ads in that first edition. The top movies of the day included Rambo III, Crocodile Dundee II and the Chevy Chase comedy Funny Farm. The price of things has sure changed over VOTED the last 25 years. A FAMILY FBUENST two-litre carton of milk THE OKANA IN was $1.75 in 1988, and GAN a full-sized 1/2 ton GMC pickup went for $10,977. However, it seems technology price points haven’t changed much at all. City Furniture was selling Hitachi VCRs for $488, and 20-inch colour TVs (without a remote) went for $500. Perhaps the biggest change I noticed was in real estate. In June 1988, you could buy a respectable four-bedroom, two-bathroom house for about $50,000. A mere $65,000 would get you into a two-bedroom home in East Hill, right next to Lakeview Park. The Re/Max property listings topped out at the ‘Over $100,000’ bracket. You could buy a 3,500 square-foot home in Coldstream with views of Kal Lake for $128,900 (the only Owned by Mr. Ermanno Barone, area businessman and film producer. downside was the mortgage rate was 10 per cent). Add a zero and you might be in www.atlantiswaterslides.ca the ballpark for the same property today.

Okanagan Door & Window Sale has put a new spin on old technology. When O’Keefe Ranch reached Okanagan Door president Dave Marcoux about replacing the windows in historic St. Anne’s church, he jumped at the change to get involved. There were a few stipulations though. The windows had to be refurbished by traditional methods, and be within budget. Other contractors had been asked to survey the job, and concluded it would cost more than O’Keefe’s $10,000 budget would allow. Steve Wulff, a wood window specialist with Okanagan Door & Window

O

Game changer Don Kendall convinced me to join this thriving tri-weekly at a time where I was also weighing offers from dailies in Kelowna and Lethbridge. Kendall jumpstarted my journalism career by agreeing to pay me 20 cents a column inch for high school sports articles while I attended Vernon Senior Secondary School. I would bang out a 10-inch hoops story on a Friday night (on something called a typewriter) and then borrow my dad’s car and drop the piece through the night slot for Saturday’s press run. It wasn’t much spending money, but I was getting my byline in the local paper and inspiring high school athletes. Panther coach Dick Chambers told me the coverage I gave VSSS in those years helped boost five teams to provincials one season. Kind words for sure. The success of this paper comes mainly through a dedicated and talented group of employees, in every department. For the most part, we are appreciated and the feelings are mutual. I smile every time we run a photo of a young athlete whose parents I know. The press brings a perma-grin to the whole family. And the picture usually spends at least a year on the fridge. You won’t see photos of your children or grandchildren in the big daily. That’s where community newspapers are winning big-time these days. We capture history and create scrapbook memories for the people we see at rooftop parties at Nixon Wenger, the Winter Carnival parade or the Funtastic Summer Music Festival. We are a free publication so we rely on advertisers to pay our plus tax salaries. We do our best 1 hour photo session in Vernon area to deliver a product 10 high resolution photos saved to disc both our advertising Must be booked by July 15 partners and readers will respect and admire.

ne day I’m sitting down talking golf with John Daly or interviewing Ryan Kesler of the Canucks at their Vernon training camp. The next day I’m out shooting a women’s soccer or a Mosquito baseball game. In between, I’m writing stories about perfect-game bowlers, high school athletes earning scholarships, coaches who make a difference and potty-mouth female senior lacrosse general managers. Aside from listening to at least one Rod Stewart tune Kevin Mitchell on my headphones as I turn phrases, every day at The Morning Star sports department is unique. I signed up in September, 1991 after a dozen years away from my beloved hometown. Little did I know the contract would last longer than Rick DiPietro’s crazy 15-year deal with the New York Islanders. Two decades later and I’m still a happy employee. I could have asked for a trade to our paper in Honolulu, but I sunburn badly.
