Mini Putt

Kimberley has just opened a state of the art mini putting course at the Riverside Campground on St. Mary Lake Road. More than a mini putt, the course is a miniature 18-hole golf course, complete with water features and elevation changes. It’s not like any mini putt course you’ve ever played before. Affordable fun for the whole family.

Established in 1927 to showcase the Elephant Brand fertilizer produced by Cominco, Cominco Gardens are five hectares and 48,000 blossoms of living colour. Gifted to the City in 1987 by the mine, Cominco Gardens are lovingly maintained and cared for by a dedicated staff under Chief Gardener Dan Matheson. Access from downtown by following 4th Avenue to Townsite and turning left on 2nd Avenue, or take the paved trail up 4th, or the Old Nurses Trail behind the Presbyterian Church.

Hillside Garden

Come enjoy our splendid garden with us. The view and treats are memorable!

Sharing one building at the west end of the Platzl, both the Museum and Library are open Tuesdays through Saturdays through the summer. Learn about Kimberley’s colourful past at the Museum upstairs, or browse the library collection and access the internet downstairs.

History of Kimberley Mining and mountains

The history of Kimberley is that of the people who worked and played in its mountains. The Sullivan Mine, which operated over 100 years in Kimberley before finally playing out in

2001, was the lifeblood of the town, providing jobs to generations of men and women. The head frame sat high on Sullivan Hill and the mine descended into the mountain.

When the miners weren’t working they were playing in the hills and valleys around Kimberley. They built a ski jump just behind the present Overwaitea store in Lower Blarchmont, and many jump competitions were staged there. They built the first ski runs on North Star Mountain, installed the first T-bar and helped it grow into the world class resort it is today. Kimberley’s citizens ex-

plored every path in the Nature Park and helped it attain park status. They built the ice rinks and pools and playgrounds, schools and stores, cross country trails and hiking trails. To this day, Kimberley is a community that lives and breathes the outdoors, and why not? When the beautiful Rocky Mountains are right outside your backdoor, why stay inside?

Underground Mining Railway

Ride behind a real mining locomotive into Kimberley’s mining history. These locomotives (known locally as locis) were used underground at the great Sullivan Mine in Kimberley and have been lovingly restored and remodeled by a dedicated group of volunteers.

the underground tunnel. Once inside the mountain, you will disembark and learn about jackleg mining from men who actually worked in the Sullivan underground. The train will also stop so you can take a short walk to the Sullivan Mine Powerhouse for a guided tour featuring the huge compressors and generators that powered the mine.

Your trip includes a scenic ride in the Mark Creek Valley and a running commentary on Kimberley history. But the real highlight is riding the train into Explore the Orpheum Theatre,

the North Star school house, the Miner’s Cabin and the Caboose as part of your adventure into history. The attraction opens weekends beginning May 18 and daily from June 29 through the Labour Day weekend. Tickets are available at the downtown station.

Fishing A staple of Canadian summers! Get out and cast a lure into clear mountain waters. Watch a hand-tied fly dance across a sparkling creek. Drift across a misty lake at dawn, with a line over the side of the boat. The opportunities for fishing in the East Kootenay are as limitless as the mountains themselves. The St. Mary, Elk, Bull and Kootenay rivers provide good opportunities for cutthroat trout and there are numerous guide outfitters in both Kimberley and Cranbrook who would be happy to assist you.

The new 2012-2013 Freshwater Fishing Regulations Synopsis and in-season regulation changes are available online at http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/fish/ regulations/. Printed copies have been distributed to licence vendors, Service BC offices and Visitor Service Centers throughout the province.

Hiking & Biking Kimberley is becoming known as a mecca for mountain biking and hiking. New trails are being developed every year to suit every level of rider and every level of fitness. If you’re looking for steep slopes, you might want to challenge the Round the Mountain Trail, which takes you all the way around North Star Mountain (Kimberley’s ski hill). There are the cross country trails up on the mountain that can be hiked and biked in the summer, and also many, many kilometres of trails in Kimberley’s Nature Park. The Nature Park is one of Canada’s largest urban parks at 800 hectares (1800 acres). Located entirely within the City boundaries, its

varied terrain and diverse ecosystems provide endless opportunities for recreation and education. Several dozen kilometres of multi-use trails, criss-cross the forested hillsides, linking small ponds and panoramic viewpoints into a unique soft-wilderness experience for residents and visitors alike. Trail maps are available at local businesses and the tourist info centre behind the Platzl. There are hiking trails off the Lois Creek Townsite, as well as a paved trail connecting that area to the downtown. There is also a paved trail all the way from the Resort to the downtown core. And the Rails to Trails paved link to Cranbrook begins at the Kimberley Civic Centre.

We at Kootenay Mountain Works would like to extend our bottomless gratitude to the community of Kimberley for all of your continued support through this past season.

See you on the trails. 250 SPOKANE STREET KIMBERLEY BC 250 427 4449

Camping

So many choices!

When it comes to camping in Kimberley and the East Kootenay area, you can take the road less travelled —or you can pull into a full service campsite right off the main highway. It’s your choice. If full service provincial parks are your favourite place for camping, there are plenty in this area, including Premier Lake just north of Kimberley at Skookumchuk, Wasa Lake Provincial Park, Kikomun Creek near Koocanusa Lake and many more. All camping spots at provincial parks may be reserved ahead of time online through the BC Parks Discover Camping Reservation Service.

Just outside of Kimberley itself, a few kilometres up the St. Mary Lake Road (accessed just north of Marysville) is the Kimberley Riverside Campground. This full service city campground offers 140 scenic sites above the St. Mary River, full hookups, a swimming pool and the new Kimberley Riverside Putting Course. More information and reservations are available at kimberleycampground.com. There are many private campgrounds at small communities around Cranbrook/Kimberley, such as Skookumchuck, Wasa, Fort Steele and Moyie. There is also the Mount Baker RV camp, located right in the heart of Cranbrook.

TRY OUR NEW 18 HOLE PUTTING COURSE!

If you like camping a little more off the beaten path, forest rec site camping abounds in the area, with popular spots at Horseshoe Lake, Lazy Lake and more. The recreational camp sites are rustic and provide only the basics amenities such as sanitary facilities, fire rings, picnic tables and boat launch ramps in some places. The recreational trails are designed and maintained for all types of usage from hiking and horseback riding to skiing and snowmobiling. Some recreational sites have litter barrels supplied, while other sites are “User Maintained” which means packing out all your garbage.

Plein Air

July 31 through August 10, 2013 En plein air is a French expression which means “in the open air”, and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors. Kimberley’s artists have embraced plein air painting and are involving the whole community. The Plein Air Festival offers a three day plein air watercolour workshop, a four-day plein air oil/acrylic workshop and culminates with a Saturday morning Paint Out in the Platzl on Saturday, August 10.

Arts on the Edge August 10 and 11, 2013

The 9th annual Arts on the Edge festival will take place in Kimberley the second weekend in August starting on Friday evening, August 9, in the Gallery at Centre 64 with an opening gala from 7 to 10 p.m., for which tickets are available at Centre 64. On Saturday the festival spreads downtown to the pedestrian Platzl area where a variety of outdoor events take place. The Arts on the Edge festival features one of the major annual art exhibitions in the East Kootenay, on display in the Gallery at Centre 64 on Deer Park Avenue. On Saturday afternoon, August 10th, the pedestrian Platzl will come alive from noon to 5 p.m. with people dancing and listening to popular Kootenay musical groups performing on the gazebo stage, artisans displaying and selling their wares at stalls, and clowns and jugglers entertaining children along with a story-teller and children’s musician. When in need of refreshment festival visitors can relax on the outdoor patios of the numerous Platzl restaurants. www.kimberleyarts.com

2013 - 2014 Visitor Guide

What accent? We’re Canadians, eh!

If you're visiting Canada, you may have trouble understanding the locals. Here's a guide to Canadianisms. Canuck: A slang term for Canadian in the U.S. and Canada. It sometimes means “French Canadian” in particular, especially in the Northeast of the United Sates and in

Canada. Adopted as the name of the National Hockey League team in Vancouver. Chinook: A warm, dry wind experienced along the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains in the United States and Canada. Most common in winter and spring, a chinook wind can result in a rise in temperature of 20 C˚ (36 F˚) in a quarter of an hour.

Kokanee: As well as being a very popular beer in Canada, and brewed over in the next valley in Creston, kokanee is also a fresh water salmon. Deke: A word derived from decoy and used to describe a fake or feint intended to deceive a defensive player, often drawing that player out of position, usually in hockey, as in “I deked him out and scored”. Caesar: While many nonCanadians know only the Bloody Mary, the Caesar is in fact he drink of choice in Canada, using clam juice instead of tomato juice. Rig Pig: A local who heads to the oil patch to make the big money, usually working away for a number of weeks, then heading back to Kimberley. Sasquatch: A legendary creature similar to Bigfoot or

Yeti, from the Halkemeylem word ‘sesqac’. Popularized by Kokanee Brewery as the thief of Kokanee beer. Tim’s - Timmy’ - Timmy Ho’s: The quintessentially Canadian coffee and doughnut chain. Eh: A spoken interjection to ascertain the comprehension, continued interest, agreement etc of the person or persons addressed (“That was a good game last night, eh?”) May also be used instead of “huh?” or “what?” meaning “Please repeat or say again.” Forty pounder (forty ouncer): A 40 oz. bottle of alcohol Two-four: A case of beer with 24 bottles. Loonie: Canadian one dollar coin. Derived from the use of the loon on the reverse. Toonie: Canadian two dollar coin – modelled after loonie. Also spelled tooney, twooney, twoonie, or twonie. Molson Muscle: Although its origins are obscure, Molson muscle is a distinctly Canadian term used to describe the pot belly, the beer belly or the spare tire, essentially, an enlarged gut resulting from the consumption of too many Molson Canadians. It almost sounds like something you could and should be proud of.

Bring your kids Lots to do!

There’s lots of activities available for kids in Kimberley. On Rotary Drive, you will find a combination skate park and mountain bike park. Ride the concrete bowls or try some bike jumps. There are always kids at the skate park on summer evenings. For the younger set, there’s the playground on Rotary Drive, as well as neighbourhood playgrounds throughout the city.

22

The entire family will enjoy the new putting course out at Riverside Campground. Take the whole family on the Sullivan Underground Railway or a family ride or hike on the Rails to Trails. You can pick huckleberries on the ski hill, or take the kids out to Wasa Beach or Lazy Lake for a swim or fishing.

Kimberley’s downtown is full of uniquely painted fire hydrants–take the kids for a walk and look for them.
