leadersoftomorrow Sydney Pain
Introducing our Leaders of Tomorrow
Albion elementary
Sydney Pain, a Grade 4 student at Albion elementary, is passionate about life and is a talented athlete.
The Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows News is pleased to offer the first edition of ‘Leaders of Tomorrow’ in which we celebrate local students who have excelled in academics, athletics, the arts and community involvement.
She currently plays soccer in the community on a U11 select team – a division above her own age. During the soccer off-season, she plays lacrosse for the Ridge Meadows Burrards.
Special thanks to Irena Pochop, Manager of Communications at School District #42 for her help in coordinating this project and to all the principals of S.D. #42 for committing their time and expertise to select students worthy of recognition.
Sydney enjoys playing team sports, as she likes working with others towards a common goal. In physical education classes, Sydney is always positive and encouraging towards her peers. She will help others out with skill development and celebrate in their accomplishments, too.
Keep in mind that this was not a competition, and there are many hard working, talented and deserving young people who could have been selected, but our principals went above and beyond to provide us with a sample of youth who exemplify the qualities of excellence, maturity and leadership.
When asked about helping others, she says: “Seeing other people smile makes me feel really good.” Academically, Sydney is a solid student. Her favourite subjects, aside from PE, are science and social studies. She really enjoyed doing an animal research project in science last term. She is an active participant in the school community, joining both Bookfest and the Reading Link Challenge. Sydney also has a passion for animals, especially dogs. She says animals are helpless and need our assistance. A few summers ago, Sydney organized a lemonade stand in her neighbourhood, with proceeds going to the local SPCA.
So, please enjoy ‘Leaders of Tomorrow’ and be comfortable in the knowledge that our future is in good hands.
In high school, Sydney would love to learn about mythology, a topic she finds fascinating. Her academic goal is to achieve straight As on a report card sometime.
Jim Coulter Publisher Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows News
Her ultimate goal, however, is to continue to play soccer, one day professionally.
Tiahna Cole Albion elementary
Tiahna Cole decided at a young age that she would be an athlete. She has played a variety of sports over the past number of years, including soccer, baseball, gymnastics, swimming, and lacrosse. At times she has had to choose one sport over another due to time constraints, even though she enjoys participating in all of them.
In school, Tiahna takes her academics seriously. Her favourite subject is math, especially multiplication. Intuitively, she knows she will enjoy learning division, once her class gets to that point. Tiahna enjoys helping others; it makes her feel good. This year, she and some friends are organizing the “Pawsitive Walk” in the community, to raise money for the local SPCA and Katie’s Place animal shelter. When the school organizes an event to raise money for a charity, she gets behind it 100 per cent, and tries her best to raise money for the charity.
For her, it’s not about the incentive prizes that you receive for raising money. It’s about the good feeling she gets knowing that she is helping others. In the future, Tiahna wants to be either a lawyer, veterinarian, or marine biologist. She knows that all of these professions require a lot of education, but says the time and effort will be worth it. She is not sure exactly which one she will choose, but as she sees it, in each of these professions, she will be able to help others.

Jia Kim
Alexander Robinson elementary
Blue Mountain elementary
Alicia Hiebert is an all-round amazing kid. Not only does she do well in school, she is kind and helpful to everyone. She is always willing to help out around the classroom and school.
Jia Kim is a Grade 6 student at Blue Mountain elementary. She regularly exhibits the characteristics that we value in a leader.
Her compassion pours into everything that she does and she goes out of her way to include everyone, including the special needs children she works with at the school. She always has a ‘hello,’ a hug and kind words and compliments for students with special needs.
She makes a difference in our classroom and school, without the need to be in the spotlight.
She is calm, always good-natured, and ready to assist anyone who needs it.
Besides helping her fellow students in class, and being first to volunteer for any and all extra work and projects, Jia often spends her recess helping out with the Kindergarten class.
Alicia challenges herself do her best at her schoolwork. She has a passion for Me to We, which is an initiative of Free the Children, helping raise money and awareness for clean water projects in Kenya. She is also involved in many extra-curricular activities in and outside of school, such as DSAC, softball, soccer, babysitting, bottle drives, volleyball, dances, leading assemblies, announcing, singing, and swimming.
“Alicia believes we all need to become involved in changes.” Alicia’s most memorable school moment was when she and four friends worked hard for a month on an anti- bullying day hip-hop dance. They had matching outfits and their moves were in perfect sync. On the day of the presentation, with the whole school watching, the music was not working. It was embarrassing and some others were crying. But Alicia’s positive leadership shone through as she kept telling them, “It is not how we did, what counts, it’s that we did something, and we did great.” In future, Alicia plans to become a special education assistant. She loves working with children, especially children with special needs. That is a passion for her. Alicia believes we all need to become involved in changes. She is committed to continuing with Me to We. Free the Children is saving lives, supporting Third World countries, and changing the world. “Love like there’s no tomorrow, she says, “care like it is tomorrow, and lead because we are tomorrow.”
Jia manages to also excel academically, producing work of above average quality.
“Jia believes that bullying is wrong and will step in to say something if she sees it happening.”
Finally, Jia is a gifted artist. Her drawings and artwork are exceptional. Jia is an active member of the Whonnock Lake Canoe and Kayak Club and races every summer with her team. Jia is a unique, compassionate and talented individual who truly leads by example. She is really proud that she recently took part in the Pink Day assembly at Blue Mountain, and wore a pink shirt to show that she supports people everywhere who may be getting bullied. Jia believes that bullying is wrong and will step in to say something if she sees it happening. She is an advocate for herself and for her peers. Jia would like to be a primary school teacher when she grows up. She likes helping young children and wants to help them grow up to be great readers and writers.

Madison Andrews Kanaka Creek elementary
Madison Andrews is in Grade 6 at Kanaka Creek elementary and was nominated because she is an example to everyone. She is kind, personable and level-headed in all situations. She has made many contributions to the school and the community: taking part in activities with the Me to We leadership group, personally raising money for cancer awareness, and every few years cutting her hair at the Relay For Life event. Her most memorable school moment was when she was the lead in the school play last year, and being asked for her autograph.
Jeffrey Sunshine, a Grade 7 student at Laity View elementary, is a kind and giving student who helps out whenever he can. Jeffrey is a leader on the school’s sound crew committee and plays for the Laity View basketball team. As a leader of our sound crew committee, he runs assemblies, dances and any other school presentations. Jeffrey also wrote and directed a song for his class to perform at the Christmas concert.
Jeffrey is an excellent student and a high-level hockey goaltender.
Her future plan is to become an author. “I am good at writing and hope to sell my adventurous books everywhere.” “I also hope that one day I could travel to Africa and teach there. I could raise money to help build more schools and create recreational activities there.”
His hard work and dedication to all he does will allow him to achieve whatever he sets his mind to. We are extremely proud that Jeffrey is a member of the Laity View community.

leadersoftomorrow Claire Bruce
Kanaka Creek elementary Claire Bruce, in Grade 6 at Kanaka Creek elementary, is a leader of tomorrow. “I think I was nominated because I’m in Me to We, and I try to show leadership in the school. Whenever there is a chance to make a difference I jump at it, because making the world a better place is what I live for,” she said.
The Future Starts in Your Own Backyard
Her most memorable school moment was when she organized a bake sale to help kids with cancer. “It took a lot of work, but it was worth it because I ended up raising around $575, and knowing that I helped a child in need, that feeling is priceless.”
“I hope to go to university to be a teacher, so I can be a mentor for kids”
Her future plans are to volunteer at the SPCA and join as many clubs in high school that benefit others or are trying to make the world a better place. “I hope to go to university to be a teacher, so I can be a mentor for kids and help them see that they can make the world a better place by doing just the simplest things,” she said. “You could drop off a can of soup at the food bank or you can donate your old clothes to Big Brothers. But the simplest thing you could do is give someone a smile. It can even be a stranger, but when you smile at someone, you’re making your day that much brighter.”

Maple Ridge elementary
Maple Ridge elementary
Casey Wright is an inspirational member of Maple Ridge elementary. A confident and reflective Grade 7 student, Casey is known throughout the school for his great sense of humor and positive outlook on life. As a well-known spokesperson for B.C. Children’s Hospital, Casey has been outspoken and open about his medical challenges.
Colorado Zelinski is an outstanding role model and member of Maple Ridge elementary. An active member of the Grade 7 leadership committee, Colorado has devoted his time and energy to becoming proficient at ensuring our school presentations – assemblies, special guest presentations, and schoolwide celebrations – are the best they can be.
In sharing his personal journey, Casey has further promoted the sense of community within our school – the importance of supporting and caring for each other.
Colorado has become the go-to person for all technical and sound support, and is a reliable on-site volunteer. Colorado also demonstrates his leadership skills through his interactions with other members of the school community. He is a kind, thoughtful and positive role model to younger children and a valuable classmate to his peers.
Casey’s relationship with his peers was the driving force behind the leadership committee’s initiative to raise funds for B.C. Children’s Hospital. Casey is also comfortable engaging in conversations with students of all ages. He has great listening skills and the respect of members of our school.
Colorado has a great sense of humor and is an excellent athlete – demonstrating sportsmanship on and off the court.
We have no doubt that Casey will continue to lead into the future in a positive and pro-active way.
Brieanna McVicker
She is also actively involved with Christmas in the City and volunteers at Katie’s Place animal shelter.
Pitt Meadows secondary
Having courage to step out of comfort zones, Brieanna McVicker has demonstrated initiative and motivation to develop meaningful connections among students. She has a natural talent for seeing different perspectives, an experience enhanced through the lens of a camera. Brieanna looks for ways to get involved in both community and school activities, such as organizing the Terry Fox Run and anti-bullying day at Pitt Meadows secondary.
Instilled in Brieanna is a care for others. She is continually mindful of her actions and aims to involve others in positive ways. Her dedication to improving her school community is exemplary. Working with others, Brieanna has learned to take responsibility and solve problems when things take unexpected turns. Similar to her ability to capture clear and vivid photos, being a leader clicks with Brieanna. In future, she plans to build on her volunteer skills through pursuing postsecondary studies in event management.

Magdalena Richardson Maple Ridge secondary
C.J. Schuetz
Within the hallways of Maple Ridge secondary, the name Magdalena Richardson echoes with respect as she strives for personal excellence with a kindness, integrity and modesty that changes the people around her.
C.J. Schuetz is a polite, cooperative student who goes out of her way to provide leadership to both the school and her community.
Her passion is science. Having a conversation with her about the world of physics is comparable to observing how the little particles of our world might just be buzzing with life themselves.
Whonnock elementary
Her fascination with “bizarre little particles which don’t follow any rules” is so inspirational, it drives those around her to want to know more about the Superstring Theory (which is simply just called “The Theory of Everything”).
C.J. has been involved in every athletic team this year, as well as being part of school-based and district leadership teams. She is also in a number of community based teams and clubs. Even though she is involved in all of this, C.J. still maintains a straight-A average. Her teachers describe her as a hard working, caring individual who goes out of her way to help others. C.J. has even sold her own art in order to give money to build a house for someone in the Dominican Republic. Her future plans include a mission trip with her youth group and sees herself in a profession someday where she is helping others
Magdalena’s position on getting acquainted with “everything” is simply that when she is finally able to do this, she will have helped unite the world that we know with all its four known forces. Magdalena’s charismatic energy drives her peers and others around her to want to focus on dark matter, “the four per cent of the universe we know about,” and other incredible discussions about astrophysics and quantum computing. Magdalena’s passion is compelling. She excels in academics (GPA 4.0) and presents her viewpoints with conviction (a top speaker at VMUN Convention), and is open to new ideas. Her connection to inspire others is as genuine as it is genius. As she compels those who, one minute before, simply did not care, she becomes visibly excited.
Andrew Wang
She has been a top debate competitor and coach of the MRSS debate club for two years. She developed a culture for a small group, which grew substantially with her at the helm, that led to positive transformations and a sense of belonging.
Andrew Wang, in Grade 10 at Thomas Haney Secondary School, is a leader in particular in the area of environmental awareness.
The beauty of her successes lies in the fact that even as Magdalena proves herself a brain to be reckoned with, she is appreciative of everyone who has been a step in her learning. She wrote a letter recently, a letter of thanks, that stated: “To have been able to keep up such an important part of the life at MRSS has been an honour and a privilege,” after she personally developed all the strategies for success herself.
Thomas Haney secondary
A member of the school’s eco-action group for several years, he recently applied for and received a grant from “learning for a sustainable future.” Andrew has launched a school-wide composting program, installed a solar cone at the school, and oversees the school’s worm bins. His work is having an impact on waste reduction.
Magdalena is a brilliant young lady who has already asked, “What limits do people have?” The beauty in the way Magdalena approaches this is that she honestly projects her answer: We only have the limits we impose upon ourselves. She is a youth who truly is “out of this world.” Perhaps this inherent truth compelled her decision to be an astronaut. She will be living out her need to discover “quantum weirdness” in order to make the world a better place.

Jazmin Amriks
Alexander Robinson elementary Jazmin takes the initiative to get involved in school affairs, including making announcements on the PA system and leading school assemblies. Joining Me to We, a Free the Children initiative, has improved her social skills, collaboration skills, and she’s now confident in sharing her thoughts and ideas. It’s made her more aware of what is happening to kids her age throughout the world.
Isaac Wray
Maple Ridge Christian High School We could all use the courage and resilience of Isaac Wray, graduating this year from MRCS. Isaac is a pioneer, making his own trails, never pressured to conform.
“I’m glad to know that I can make a difference and help these children and adults around the world.”
An avid and talented photographer, Isaac took a business management class outside of school this year to guide him in the development of his business, Golden Ears Photography. Besides working hard to achieve his professional and artistic goals, Isaac serves his community as well, having volunteered his time to countless events throughout his school career. Isaac is known for his dependability, energy, and leadership and he is making waves.
“Isaac is known for his dependability, energy, and leadership and he is making waves.”
Jazmin was inspired by the speakers when she attended We Day for the first time.
“Taking the time to get to know people instead of judging them firsthand, would make our world a more comfortable and accepting place to live in!”
Jazmin is mature and wise beyond her years and expects when she goes to SRT in the fall, she’ll be a leader in that school community too. She is positive and optimistic and presents her viewpoints in a mature manner. Jazmin says her most memorable school moment was the time when she, along with her friends, organized a penny drive in support of a clean water initiative in Kenya. A part of the responsibility was to go to all the other classrooms daily and collect their penny bags. “It was also rewarding to have that extra time to be with my friends. The bond between the four of us is now stronger than ever!” Jazmin believes “discrimination of other cultures or religions is one of the most ignored reasons of why our society is so troubled today. Taking the time to get to know people instead of judging them firsthand, would make our world a more comfortable and accepting place to live in!” “My experience being an Indo Canadian and being proud of my culture, traditional dress and religion has made me who I am today. I am very proud of my culture. I have even convinced my friends to do a dance to a Hindi song.”
