Underwood goes over the top in show TERESA MALLAM arts@pgfreepress.com
Thank God for small towns. Because the girl from small-town Oklahoma took us by storm with her Blown Away Tour show at CN Centre on May 21. Country-rock singer, songwriter Carrie Underwood gave an absolutely awesome, all-out performance to thrill a sold-out crowd of 5,100. Having shot to superstar status following her 2005 American Idol win, Underwood has developed quite a fan base – with good reason. It’s a total package thing. She’s got a great voice, stage presence, charm and charisma. She’s sincere, sweet and sexy – all at the same time. No small feat, any woman will tell you. Underwood’s a glam gal for sure. A beautiful southern blonde belle with more costume changes – trademark cut-away evening gowns to hot pants to clingy tight jeans – than seems possible given the number of songs she pulled from her arsenal of hits and covers. I loved her heartfelt Temporary Home, high-octave Two Black Cadillacs, her love song Remind Me with Brad Paisley (seen on the big screen), and All American Girl – she sang ‘Canadian’ girl a few times as a nod to the Canadian leg of her North American tour. When I heard Underwood brought with her 16 trailers, I thought, ‘Wow, that girl is high maintenance.’ But after seeing the show with all its dazzling new technology, aerial cables and stunning visual effects, I can see why she needed all those trailers to transport it. Underwood took time to thank her Prince George fans and let them know how much she loves what she does. A philanthropist who supports a number of causes, she told the crowd that $1 of every seat sale on the Canada tour will go to the Canadian Red Cross. The audience responded with wild applause. Her show totally hit it out of the ballpark for me. I’ve heard her sing before of course, on Idol and other TV performances, on the radio and on her CDs but in a live performance, she’s an amazing powerhouse. The highlight for me (and for her too, she said) was the elaborate “hot air balloon” part of the show which brought her and members of her band up, up and away over the heads of the audience. That was followed with giant beach balls thrown out into the audience so they could enjoy tossing them around. According to Wikipedia, the 30-year-old singer and musician – she plays piano and guitar – has sold more than 13 million albums and is outrageously popular with a huge fan base. After Tuesday night’s show at CN Centre, she no doubt has hundreds more. The female fan beside me knew the words to every one of her songs and during the show happily sang along while taking photos with her iPhone. Audience members ranged in age from teens to boomers. For her encore, everyone in the house knew that Underwood would return to do Blown Away – after all, it was the name of the tour. But I’m not sure that any of us could have anticipated her soaring vocals or the jawdropping visual effects that went with it. Great show, great gal.

look (as well as his sound) which has garnered him a bearded fan following. “I think the secret to developing a completely different look than other artists is not to set out to try to do that,” he jokes. “It’s just a natural expression of myself. Whether it’s a mixture of disdain for the clean-cut, metro, hyper-polished pop culture – or just a little laziness on the side...” Releasing his first album in 2012 was a highlight of his career, he says. “The Time of the Great Remembering is in many ways a ‘best of’ album of the first 10 years of songwriting,” he says. “[It came about] with the help of the band that supported me and the arrangement of the songs that were developed slowly over several years, as I experimented with different instrumentations. Once I found my ideal line-up and instrumentation, I laid it [tracks] down.” How did he choose what songs to put on the album? “It was quite natural because I’d been performing a lot leading up to the recording of the album, and the songs that went on the album were the songs that over time became the core repertoire of the band.” As busy as he has been over the past year, it feels good, says Caplan. “I did a lot of touring in 2012, I did about 10 and one half months travelling. A big part of it for me is the opportunity to play for live audiences.” Ben Caplan plays Artspace above Books and Company on Saturday, June 16. Tickets are available at Books and Company.
Ben Caplan has capped off 10 years of performing and recording with a much-touted debut album. In The Time of the Great Remembering (a title he admits is a ‘mouthful’) won him the Rising Star Recording of the Year at the East Coast Music Awards. His live performances have garnered him great reviews and descriptions such as “rugged, raspy and roaring with charisma.” Caplan is a multi-instrumentalist known for his bold range of music which is spiced with a bit of melodrama. He will be performing a solo show at Artspace, above Books and Company in Prince George, on June 16. “This [PG venue] is one of the last set of dates in Canada on tour to support my debut album,” he said. “I’ll be performing solo at Artspace and I’m quite looking forward to it.” The talented musician began young, very young, to find his voice and love of instruments. Which came first? “My first instrument was the guitar. From there, I branched out to banjo and piano. The singing started much, much earlier (he laughs). I think I was one of those kids that was singing from the womb ... and I continued to develop an interest in the arts and music which eventually led me to the glorious path of singer, songwriter.” Although he’s toured widely with his band, The Casual Smokers, he has not toured with them in Canada. “I’ve actually never done a full band tour in Canada. It’s quite difficult (and very expensive) to tour in this country – especially when I demand the top Ms. Lorea’s offers both the full of the top performers Esthetic and Nail Technology and they are in high demand.” diploma program. Solo shows allow for * Certificates for specific modules a greater intimacy with * Start anytime the audience, he says. * Fully accredited with PCTIA “I think the number and BBB one difference for me between the solo show and the band show is there is obviously more energy on stage with the band, but solo shows allow you to have a more direct interaction COLLEGE OF ESTHETICS & with the audience. Cuba left handed pitcher Norberto Gonzalez unwinds before making a delivery against Chinese Taipei during the 2011 World Baseball Challenge final at Citizen Field. Thanks in large part to his efforts in relief of starter Miguel Gonzalez, Norberto was named Tournament MVP following the championship game, a 10-5 Cuba victory. give a hand.” But that’s not to suggest challenges aren’t coming. Organizers are always looking at ways to make the tournament even better, and with Citizen Field opened for another summer, groundskeepers will have their hands full. On top of the work on the diamond, Swanson notes that they’re planning improvements to the dugouts to handle larger teams. They’re also looking into offering a wider
area for spectators to view the action. “Even our seating expansion plan this year, presuming that everything gets put in place and there aren’t too many road blocks, I think will be a slightly different look to this park than we’ve had before,” Swanson says. But the most obvious difference between this year’s tournament and the previous two can be seen in the calendar. Instead of a July tournament, the 2013 edition of the WBC
will unfold in August. The shift had to do with accommodating the travel plans of the Cubans and Japanese, so they could include the baseball powerhouses in the event. The tournament falls after AAA peewee provincials from Aug. 8 to 11. Some of the same volunteers working on the WBC are organizing the peewee tournament. “It’s pure grassroots, for the love of the community and giving back,” Swanson says.

Preparations continue for the third edition of the World Baseball Challenge in Prince George. Although opening pitch is still just over two months away, organizers will be turning their pre-tournament efforts into high gear soon. With baseball season now underway throughout most of Canada, attention is starting to turn to Prince George’s biggest sports event of 2013. The tournament is scheduled for Aug. 13 to 23 at Citizen Field. Six national teams will participate: Cuba, Japan, Chinese Taipei, USA, the Bahamas and host Canada. A team of about 40 individuals form this year ’s tournament organizing committee. Jim Swanson once again carries the tournament chair position, although two individuals are listed as co-chairs, marketing director Shawn Rice and facilities planner Lance Brommeland. “We’re all volunteers, nobody is getting paid and we all do it either off the sides of our desks or in our spare time,” Swanson says. “That’s what we do in Prince George and that’s how we make it work.” Swanson has worked with Larry Seminoff, who founded the World Baseball Challenge tournament in Grand Forks, in recruiting teams. Rosters of the participating teams are expected to be released in the coming months. “I’m excited for what Team Canada is going to be,” Swanson says. “I think it will be a great thing. Watch for some local involvement in that as well.” Although organizers haven’t pushed hard for volunteers yet, Swanson notes that they have been approached. Each of the past two tournaments, as well as last summer ’s Baseball Canada Senior Championship, included many of the same volunteers. He expects no different this summer. “We sort of have a pretty well-oiled machine in a lot of areas,” he says. “People like the event. It’s not a tough arm twist in order to get them to

Little Prince rolls again After last season’s disappointments due to mechanical challenges, the Little Prince passed all of its necessary steam tests and is certified to accept passengers for the season. Dave Warden and Marcel Gauthier of the British Columbia Safety Authority were in town last month to qualify two engineers and the engine for passenger operations. “Without the assistance and tutelage of Dave Warden from the Safety Authority this railway would not be operating,” said Tracy Calogheros, Exploration Place CEO, in a press release. “He has gone above and beyond to make sure that this, and future, generations of Prince George residents will be able to ride the rails in Fort George Park.” The train had been off the rails from 2006 to 2011 undergoing repairs and restorations coming back to operate for most of a season in 2011. At start-up in 2012 it was discovered that the two 100-year-old steam injectors had failed and would have to be replaced. That process took several months as the parts simply didn’t exist anywhere and had to be fabricated. By the time the injectors had been replaced and the engineers had qualified to take passengers, the 2012 season was, for all intents and purposes over. The Prince did carry more
than 3,000 passengers during the Thanksgiving long weekend in 2012 and is hoping to welcome more than 20,000 this summer. The City of Prince George owns the 24” gauge steam engine, which is operated by the Exploration Place on their behalf. The city contributed $15,000 to the projected $70,000 annual operating budget for the train in 2013. Many local businesses are helping to defray operating costs, keeping passenger fares to only $2 per person, per ride, all season long. “This is a major undertaking for the Museum and we are so grateful for the help of all of our partners,” said Calogheros, “not to mention the understanding of the public as we’ve worked our way through the labyrinth of mechanical, safety and regulatory mazes. “We are excited to hear the steam whistle in the Park again this season and are looking forward to welcoming all passengers on Saturday. Everybody do your sun dance for the weekend.” The train will operate from noon until 4 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday and each statutory holiday Monday of the summer, weather permitting. Please call the museum before you come down to the park if you are unsure about the weather on any given day. 250-562-1612
