In the summer of 2010, the Binta Lake forest fire south of Burns Lake saw 400 sq. kms of forest set a ablaze during an exceptionally dry and windy August. Over a 12 hour period, the blaze grew from 7000 hectares to over 35,000 hectares, setting off evacuation orders and alerts in the region. The fire, first discovered on July 28, 2010, was

the dramatic highlight of a busy fire season that year. The Binta fire was only one of 79 fires in the Nadina fire zone in 2010. The drama surrounding a large fire can easily overshadow how successful fire prevention efforts in the region actually were. The Northwest fire zone had a 91 per cent initial attack success rate in 2010 - in the face of more than 250 fires. Of the 79 fires in our local Nadina zone, only seven of those fires grew beyond four hectares. But when one fire grows to 40,000 hectares, results in the evacuation of over 100 homes, brings in 150 additional firefighters from across B.C.

and the country, and takes 284 firefighters and 96 pieces of heavy equipment more than a month to contain, a lot can be learned from the experience. Staff and elected members of the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako (RDBN) took part in an education and awareness tour of the Binta fire area last month. The tour was led by Rob Krause, forest protection officer for the Northwest Fire Centre’s (NFC) Nadina zone, who was also in charge during the Binta fire in 2010. Burns Lake economic development officer brings dynamism WALTER STRONG Coming in off the heels of working in the successful and hardfought election campaign to re-elect Kamloops Liberal MLA Terry Lakes, Emile Scheffel could have parlayed the experience into a position within the halls of government in Victoria. Instead, Scheffel, the

Village of Burns Lake’s (VBL) new - and first hire for the position of economic development officer (EDO), chose the decidedly more rugged and rural landscape of the Lakes District to call his new home. After two years of searching for the right person, Scheffel is here. Village of Burns Lake Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Worthing commented, “We are excited to have Emile come aboard. We have limitless projects and initiatives for him to tackle as EDO.” The position came out of report recommendations found in the Economic Development Association of B.C. report compiled last year. The EDO position is funded jointly by the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako (area B) and the Village of Burns Lake in a 6040 split. The annual budget for the office of the EDO, which includes salary, economic development projects, supplies, equipment, advertising, and travel, was pegged at $109,000 for 2013 in the recently released VBL five-year budget plan.

Born and raised in Kamloops, B.C., Scheffel earned his bachelors degree at the University of Ottawa. He’s currently completing a master’s thesis in political management based on his experiences during the last election. Scheffel will be responsible for setting the tone for the job and what it can bring to the region. He acknowledged that coming into this position without a background specific to economic development will present a bit of a learning curve, but the heart of the position isn’t economics or number crunching. “It’s a relationshipbuilding and communication job,” Scheffel said. “The tragedy at the mill presents the major challenge and has served to sound the alarm bell on the fact that any community too reliant on one employer or one industry is going to be threatened by ups and downs in the sector,” Scheffel said. “We have a lot of great recommendations sitting in the community tourism plan that was drafted by the B.C. tourism association af-

ter the mill explosion. I’m working with [village] staff and partners like the chamber of commerce and local businesses to prioritize those recommendations and see which ones are achievable in the short, medium and longterm.” Scheffel hopes that local businesses and non-profit organizations will find his office to be an open door to making sure that their ideas, interests and concerns are brought to village and regional staff. He has no illusions that there is a magic bullet for the recurring set of difficulties that come with being reliant upon the fortunes of a resource sector. “There’s no question that this community was built on resource development and that’s not going to change anytime soon,” Scheffel said. But that doesn’t mean that the region can’t diversify in ways that compliment its resource history and strengths. “The opportunity is always there to expand the number of employers and to expand the number of industries that are in the region

Despite the size of the fire, the damage to merchantable timber was not as extensive as it could have been had the fire erupted in a more productive part of the forest landbase. The area had been logged extensively back to the 1950s, and previous fires had already reduced the quality of the standing timber. According to Carolyn Stevens, silviculture program manager for the Nadina Resource District, approximately 9700 hectares of the Timber Harvesting Landbase (THLB) in the Lakes Timber Supply Area (TSA) was lost to the fire. That amounts to approximately 1.3 million cubic metres of harvestable timber up in smoke, which is about one year of annual allowable cut according to current harvest limits. Enbridge pipeline isn’t dead yet One of Premier Christy Clark’s first tasks of the new term will be to resume trade talks with Alberta and Saskatchewan. Several daunting tasks await. Clark must repair relations with Alberta Premier Alison Redford after B.C.’s theatrics over oil pipelines before the election, and prepare for the results of a federal environmental review of the Enbridge Northern Gateway proposal in the fall. Some people were surprised on Friday when the B.C. government released its final written submission to the federal environmental review panel on Northern Gateway. It was widely interpreted as B.C.’s outright rejection of the project, but it’s not as simple as that. Clark and B.C. Environment Minister Terry Lake signalled several times before the election that they were not getting the answers they wanted from Enbridge. But they stuck to the principle that the hearings must be completed. The NDP repeated for months that the B.C. Liberal government had forfeited its own review and handed jurisdiction over the environmental assessment to Ottawa. In fact, a pipeline that runs across two provinces is by definition a matter of federal jurisdiction. B.C. could have held its own parallel set of hearings, which was the NDP’s stated preference, but in no circumstance does the province have a veto. And both the B.C. Liberal government and Enbridge were careful to leave the door open for further talks. A closer reading of their comments shows that the key difference at this stage is one of timing. “The panel must determine if it is appropriate to grant a certificate for the project as currently proposed on the basis of a promise to do more study and planning after the certificate is granted,” Lake said. “Our government does not believe that a certificate should BURNS LAKE

be granted before these important questions are answered.” According to Enbridge executive Janet Holder, those important questions can’t all be answered until the hearings are over. The company maintains that every river crossing and spill response plan can’t be done in detail during the two-year hearings. B.C.’s final submission runs to nearly 100 pages. It goes into detail on the inconsistencies and unanswered questions on such vital topics as whether diluted bitumen can sink in water. In short, the province argues that it can sink if the oil is in fresh water, or if it is exposed to weathering so lighter fractions evaporate, or if it is mixed with sediments that increase its density. These are pertinent conditions if heavy oil were to leak into a river in springtime, when water runs fast and cold and brown with sediment. Then there are the obstacles presented by responding to a spill in remote wilderness and heavy snow. Given both provincial and aboriginal opposition in B.C., the Enbridge pipeline is unlikely to be imposed, and last week Conservative cabinet minister James Moore clearly ruled that out. The B.C. government has consistently maintained that the current project does not meet Clark’s often-repeated five conditions, including the vaguely defined “fair share” of revenues, and Moore said the federal government agrees with those conditions. The B.C. government has to face some other uncomfortable realities as well. If heavy oil pipelines are such a risk, how does B.C. manage the one that has stretched across remote and populated areas for 60 years? Does the government take a stand against new pipelines, and then watch as rail cars full of heavy oil cross those same rivers? No permit is required for that, and in fact there are more hazardous materials than oil moving by rail and road across the province today. Emile Sheffel’s arrival in Burns Lake for the village’s new position as the region’s economic development officer will invite a lot of scrutiny, especially in a small town like Burns Lake. I’m not saying that there’s a lot of resistance to change in Burns Lake, but doubtless there will be those who wonder what their tax dollars are being spent on now. There is a cranky cross-section of any given society, no matter how small or large, that views any change - or anything new for that matter - with knee-jerk, out-right rejection. I recall a conversation I overheard a while ago at a public forum where elected village officials met with small working groups of interested Burns Lake citizens to talk about municipal affairs. One gentleman took issue with all the money being spent to expand and improve mountain biking in the area, when the ‘real’ value in Burns Lake is the fishing. Fishing, his argument went, is part of the natural beauty that is the Lakes District, just sitting their ready to be enjoyed without the need to build a network of trails or the need to apply for grant money to build trails. Fishing is ready-made, natural, outdoor goodness just sitting there waiting to be taken advantage of. Or so the idealization goes. The reality is, fishing is a low-impact outdoor activity only if you don’t count the highways, forest service roads, boat launches, fuel, outriggers, downriggers, fish sonar, composite rods, trolling motors, motoring motors, and so on, involved in dropping your hook in the water. Unless you portage your dug-out canoe in from the highway through untrammeled forest, I’d suggest that modern fishing is about as natural as a space walk. Or at least, mountain biking is no less natural. But I digress. The point is, it’s hard to please everybody. Tourism has transformed a number of small B.C. communities that had previously lost a cylinder or two in their economic engines. Look at Revelstoke as an example. Come summer months, the town is jammed with mountain bikers and tourists pulling in to town. Trail development there is second to none. When you look at the success surrounding improvements to tourism and outdoor adventure options in small communities, the only question that remains is, why didn’t anyone think of this before? How did so many small B.C. communities become almost entirely dependent on the fortunes of one mill or one industry? While there’s no short answer to that question, it might have something to do with a resistance to change and to new ideas. It takes tax payer dollars to fund new ideas, and nothing raises hackles like spending new money. People want accountability, and rightfully so, but maybe we should ask how different the situation in Burns Lake would be today if in the past economic diversification had been the front-running concern it is becoming now.

Complaint against local RCMP

Documents raise issue of quorum for Burns Lake Band council WALTER STRONG Internal troubles within the Burns Lake Band (BLB), Ts'il Kaz Koh First Nation, have not been resolved since the April 7, 2013 RCMP action which saw members of the BLB, and guests, removed from the Gathering Place at BLB band offices in Burns Lake. The action ended a two week sit-in occupation of the facility. According to Ryan Tibbetts, BLB member and spokesperson for the Elders Collective - a group claiming to represent more than 90 per cent of on-reserve band members - the forced removal of band members from the property has deeply divided the community and created an atmosphere of mistrust and fear towards local RCMP. Tibbetts said he recently filed a formal complaint with the Commission for Public Complaints against the RCMP (CPC) on behalf of the BLB community. A spokesperson for the commission confirmed that the complaint was received and has entered the normal channels of complaint investigation. Normally, the commission does not publicly comment on specific complaints in order to

protect the identity of the person who filed the complaint. In this case, the complainant made his case known, so confidentiality was not an issue. Tibbetts’ complaint lists four main concerns: that members of the RCMP are being used by band chief and council to intimidate opposing band members; that guns were drawn in a nonviolent circumstance on April 7, 2013 during the police action at band offices; that the RCMP failed to investigate the altercation between counc. Dan George and Tibbetts during the protest; and that Burns Lake RCMP detachment St. Sgt. Grant MacDonald involved himself as a negotiator between band council and band members during the occupation without authority to do so. Part of Tibbetts’ concern is that counc. Ron Charlie was not part of the decision to bring in the RCMP last month. "Ron Charlie is a council member and they [band council without Charlie] did not have quorum to negotiate anything with the RCMP," said Tibbetts regarding the move to enlist the aid of the RCMP on April 7. In a May 15, 2013 statement carrying Charlie’s name as a contact, he is described as having been ostracized from his duties as councilor, and in effect, if not in substance, fired without due process. “In effect, they have terminated Charlie from his role as councilor; however, they [Chief Albert Gerow and George] have not followed pro-

An April 8, 2013 fax from Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) addressed to Gerow indicates that a serious problem regarding BLB business exists as long as only two of three councilors are present for meetings. According to the fax, this means that, “Band business can not be conducted unless there are three members at the meeting - the chief as chairperson and the two councilors as voting council members.” It does not appear that AANDC will provide resolution for the strife that continues to divide the band. “The Burns Lake Indian band’s governance issues are an internal matter,” said an AANDC spokesperson. “For more information please contact the First Nation.”

A meeting convened for Burns Lake Band council by Chief Albert Gerow on May 29, 2013, was abandoned after Gerow and counc. Ron Charlie were unable to agree on who would be allowed to be present during the meeting. Charlie wanted to have his lawyer present, but Gerow was calling for a closed-door in camera session.Approximately 25 protesters representing many of the on-reserve members of the Burns Lake Band arrived in a show of support for Charlie whom they feel represents the best interests of band members living on-reserve. Charlie was to table a formal band council resolution requesting that the BLB begin proceedings to draw up a separation agreement that would see onreserve members form a community separate from the existing Burns Lake Band represented by the current chief and council.

Representatives of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development were on hand for the meeting, but were reported to have left quickly out the back door after the meeting was abandoned. Afterwards, Charlie pointed out that this would have been the first quorum meeting of band council since October, 2012, and that he is not comfortable with having future closed door meetings with current council without legal representation present due to ongoing litigation. “We want transparency and to be part of the process,” Charlie said. Drumming and calls of ‘We want separation’ were peacefully maintained outside the Burns Lake Native Development Corporation office, where the meeting was to have been held. Gerow later acknowledged that band members could call for separation, but that the process is neither quick nor simple.

A traumatic experience visiting Burns Lake

Editor: On the May long weekend my husband, 12 year old son and I were heading to Takysie Lake and stopped in your town for dinner before carrying on to the ferry. We stopped at the A & W and saw a woman in the trees drinking. She stepped out onto the curb, staggered and fell hard in the middle of the road - her head bouncing several times on the pavement. Then she was almost struck by a vehicle. We stayed there with her trying to comfort her until she was taken to the hospital. She was injured, in pain and scared. It was an event that shook us up. We couldn’t stop thinking about her. After things had settled down, we had some dinner and made our way to the ferry. As we pulled up to the holding area we saw it was extremely full. There was one slot that we thought we could fit into and as we got half way across the road we realized that our truck and trailer were too long. As we were looking to see if we could back up safely a horn honked. Just seconds later a pickup truck and trailer screeched up beside us and the driver stood half out of his truck and started yelling ‘get the f*** out of the way!’ at the top of his lungs. He then yelled some more and got back into his truck. Within seconds he was back out and yelling the same thing. Back into his truck one more time, he then jumped out and came over to our vehicle screaming all the time that we were idiots and we needed to get the f*** out of the way! He ran up to the drivers side at my husband and stuck his face in and con-

tinued to scream at the top of his lungs. We thought that he was going to attack my husband. It was very frightening. This person was out of control. When my husband said we were not from around here he suddenly backed down and apologized. By this time of course everyone in the ferry line up as well as at the takeout restaurant was hearing this person freaking out at us - it was extremely unnerving - we felt shaky and shell shocked - this persons reaction was so totally out of context for the situation. This all happened in a few minutes. Sadly, our 12 year old son was in the back seat witnessing this aggressive and intimidating behavior. We had left home excited about our weekend and to have this lunatic accost us in such a belligerent way was, to say the very least, upsetting. Road rage and bullying at its finest. We later found out from the ferry staff the name of this person and that he is a business owner in the community. Is this the way that your community would want to be represented...presumably not. What would possess a person to lash out at another human being in this manner? I also wondered how the person sitting in his truck felt - were they as horrified as the rest of us were? Despite this persons ugly attack...we ended up meeting some great people and had a wonderful time. Hoping for a better experience next time...

There is nothing nicer then a fresh char

Sorry to miss out my news last week but the holiday weekend kind of mixed me up a bit. It looks like spring has sprung. Always lots to do with the winter cleanup. It was always a busy time on the prairie getting ready to work the land, fix fences, run in the horses for work from the range. Tractors and power machinery were starting to take over, horses were on the way out. Dad was a horseman so we were just about the last horse farmers. I guess I took after my dad as I loved working with the horses. When the sleeping sickness epidemic took its toll

on the horse population then the machinery took over with tractors etc. We lost some horses but dad still held onto his teams. We went by one of our neighbour’s farms and he had six horses dead in his yard and his daughter was driving his old rugby truck cutting his grain crop. That fall they came up with shots which was a Godsend for the horse farmers and ranchers. This was a long time ago, history that I well remember. I don’t think this sleeping sickness got into B.C. They were very fortunate as this sickness was a terrible thing for the horse population. We lost a couple of very good and valuable horses. They were so sick Dad shot them. Good letter On page 6 in the last paper Bruce Snyder has put in a comment under the heading and I quote “Does council give a damn.” He has hit the nail on the head and I think lots of folks will

go along with Bruce. These big rigs and there are more every year, are going to have a hard time passing. I went down the main street yesterday and what a change. One question a few are asking is what happens when the snow plows have to clean the streets? Looks a bit tricky to me but no doubt this has been taken into consideration. Time will tell no doubt. Looks nice now. Big fish There is still some great fishing in the Lakes District. Hal Mathews pulled a lovely 25 pound char out of Uncha Lake. It was a prize catch. Char should be biting in Francois Lake about now. This is a good time for char. There is nothing nicer than a good feed of fresh char in the spring. Through my many years at Francois Lake we always looked forward to a feed of fresh char, fried in lots of butter. My mouth is watering already.

Nice visit What a pleasant surprise this morning to have my special friends Eve and Helmut Isaak for the nicest visit you could imagine. They ministered at the First Mennonite Church for some time and were loved and respected. Eve was so special to our family as she was with my dear wife and our loved mother during Jo’s last hours with us. Eve was so kind and understanding and we will never forget her. They have now bought a home in Kelowna. Gospel music What a pleasant surprise on Sunday afternoon to have the Grassy Plains Gospel Church choir drop in and sing some of the good old fashioned hymns for us to enjoy. These old hymns bring back memories from so many years ago. Evesham, Sask. where I grew up was a united church town and every Sunday the church was full.

The church yard would be horses, old model Fords, seemed every family from miles around went to church. We always went, dad in his suit, mother always wore a special hat and Peter and I in our short pants, this was what all boys wore and I hated them. These are great memories. There is a story that was told to me as a kid. The Evesham church is still standing and still so well kept. It was built in 1928 and our dad, H.H., worked on the building of it. It’s also well cared for in the interior. It’s a pleasure for me to go in again after being away for so many years. Looking back It was not fun at the time but it turned out ok in the end. When we got into the store business in 1941 there were as many horses as there were cars or just about. So for the horse people we had a hitching rail at the front of the store. Mother’s flower gar-

den was in front of the rail. It had room for about five saddle horses and about two teams of horses. Our good neighbour and friend was our best hitching rail customer. He had a lovely big team and at the time was breaking a young horse. They were tied up in front bordering mother’s flower garden. John Haragonic was also a customer and was driving his first car, a big sedan. It was big even by the old day standards. John stopped behind Jimmy Jeffrey’s wagon. As he was leaving he put his car in reverse and hit the corner of the big wagon. He pushed the team into the hitching rail. John moved ahead then backed up again into Jimmy’s wagon, this time he pushed the team through the hitching rail and through the fence of mother’s flower garden. I jumped in beside John and pulled ahead. This time it did a number on the back of the big sedan. I was glad to see John

Haragonic gave up driving soon after and hired Edward Sholander to drive him around. As for the damage to the car body from the wagon, it was a mark that lasted the cars life. I often wonder what happened to it. I notice in an old picture of a big hotel built on the same location as the present Francois Lake store, there is a notation on the picture the old hotel caught fire one cold winter night in 1922 and burnt to the ground. It was built by the Stanyer and the McLean families in 1918. Both Bob Jeffery and Corney Stanton were sleeping in the hotel that night. Stanton told me he lost his dad’s gold watch that night. I was told it was a pipe fire and it was so dry it almost exploded. Also it was 40 below and I was told what a night to be put out in your shirt tail. Take care and have a nice safe week and always remember God loves you and so do I.

On May 18, 2013, the Burns Lake fire department responded to a blaze on Gowan Rd. in Burns Lake. The building was already engulfed in flames when the firefighters arrived on scene, and the building collapsed in upon itself after initial attempts to extinguish the fire. Success is a lifestyle for local bodybuilder

Peniuk adds another trophy to his collection from the Canadian Bodybuilding championships WALTER STRONG “Bodybuilding is a lifestyle you have to live everyday to be successful,” said Theoren Peniuk in a conversation about his recent third-place finish at the Western Canada Bodybuilding Championships in Kelowna B.C. on May 18, 2013. “It’s more than just lifting things up and putting things down.” This year’s podium was the third time Peniuk had returned from the drug-tested championships with a trophy in the junior men’s division. In 2010 and 2011, he placed first as a teenager. Now 20 years old, the Burns Lake athlete plans

on taking a hiatus from the sport to concentrate on a pending move to Prince George in order to eventually register at the University of Northern British Columbia. The discipline and focus required to train consistently and effectively have shaped Peniuk’s outlook on life. “Bodybuilding teaches you more than just lifting weights,” he said. “It teaches you life-values, like discipline and time management. Your work ethic in the gym transfers over to everything that you do in life: your job, your relationships, your family relationships, your studies.” In addition to regular off-season training, peaking for a competition involves 12 to 18 weeks of carefully controlled dieting and extra cardio to strip a competitor of any extra fat that would take away from the definition and appearance of muscle. Because Peniuk was competing in an age category rather than a weight category, he didn’t have to worry about his overall weight too much. Instead, he focused on muscle and physique appearance. “I have very high expectations of myself,” he said. “I competed at four per cent body fat.” Nine percent body fat would be considered lean by any standard; four per cent approaches the limit of what SUBMITTED PHOTOS is healthy. “You can’t live healthy at four per 2013 Western cent body fat,” Peniuk said. “That’s why you only look the way you do for the competition for the one day.” The discipline to train and diet presents challenges to any athlete, but for Peniuk, local circumstances made his training even more difficult this time around. In the years he competed as a teenager he had the freedom that comes with being a high school student where perceived responsibilities famously outstrip actual responsibilities. “I had two part-time jobs this time around,” Peniuk said. “In the first competitions I was in high school. This time I had a lot more responsibility.” “It forced me to manage my time accordingly. I needed to train before work from 5:30 a.m. to 8:30

a.m. or I wasn’t going to be able to train.” Training at the unwelcome time of 5:30 a.m. brought with it a conflict with members of his local gym who were unaccustomed to the intensity levels associated with training for competitive bodybuilding. Facing complaints, Peniuk felt isolated in the gym, training at an unnatural hour and without the support of other athletes. “Ideally, your local gym should feel like a sanctuary,” he said. Peniuk credits Dave O’Grady, a recent new partowner of the gym, with turning things around for him. “He was able to explain to the members that I needed to work that hard to get to a bodybuilding competition state. He was very supportive of my training.” “Things can get really tough,” he said. “There can be lots of people doubting you or things can get in your way, but if you stay focussed on your goal, eventually you will reach it.” Peniuk dedicated his evening posing performance to his mom, his ‘number one supporter’ through the ups and downs of training for competition. He’s proud to have come back from three competitions with three trophies, but Peniuk said that the hard work, performance and the joy of competing are reward enough on their own. During the evening section of the competition the top five competitors in each category are invited to perform their own personalized routine set to music that displays their best poses. After the routine, but before the judges make their final decisions on the placings, the competitor stands alone on stage soaking in the adulation of the fans. “All the hard work and the mental struggle is gone when you get the cheers,” Peniuk said. “I would have been happy just going home with that feeling.”

Proving that students of Lakes District Secondary School have more talent than any one show can handle, the school put on another performance hot on the heels of the recent Phoenix Rising event. The annual alternative arts festival brought students from schools throughout the region and included comedy theatre (above), music, dance, poetry and video creations.

Testosterone fueled fun

There’s something to be admired about a movie series that has gone from fun to bloated to having stuck around so long that it actually became fun again, largely thanks to the introduction of Dwayne Johnson in ‘Fast Five’. Now the ‘Fast & Furiouses’ are being churned out at such an alarming rate, you’ll barely have time to catch your breath before part seven will be with us next spring. But we’ll need to make do in the meantime with this ludicrously enjoyable sixth entry that sees former criminals Dom and Brian (Vin Diesel and Paul Walker) retired to family life in Spain with a drug kingpins’ fortune. Their serene existence is interrupted, however, when Agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) enlists them to bring down mercenary leader Owen Shaw (Luke Evans) in exchange for full pardons. The proposition becomes personal when it’s also revealed that Dom’s de-

ceased beloved, Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), is not only alive, but aiding Shaw as one of his drivers. With so much at stake, Dom reassembles his fellow street racers and heads to London, where Shaw and his team plan to steal a valuable computer chip. Similar to ‘Die Hard’, the action is amped up with each new installment, a requirement that leaves the writers and director Justin Lin scrambling to figure out the logistics of crashing motorcycles into low flying fighter jets. Lin meets this challenge by tossing plausibility aside and raising his characters to near superhuman status. The limits of belief are tested as the heroes emerge uninjured after being flung onto moving vehicles and above overpasses during the film’s many exhilarating chase sequences. The gravity-defying stunts represent the true nature of the genre, not as a reflection of real life, but as testosterone fueled fantasy. ‘Fast & Furious 6’ is turbo charged cheese at its finest and is opening at the Beacon Theatre this Friday.

For the first time in 100 years, new totem poles went up in the Burns Lake area. On May 31, 2013, after a day of celebrations, the totems were raised at the newly built Wet’suwet’en First Nation(WFN) Necigeh Beyikh Health Centre on the WFN reserve west of Burns Lake. Peter George and Ben Gerow had been working on the two totems and head piece since last February, 2013. Carvings on the totems represent local hereditary clans of the Wet’suwet’en; the grizzly, grouse, caribou and beaver clans with the cross piece carved with frog clan symbolization.“The raising of these totems shows the strength of the community,” said George. “Our culture and traditions are coming back. This is a part of the way to tell that story.”

Monday, June 3rd was the first day of an expected three week trial launched against Apple by the US Department of Justice over allegations of e-book price fixing. The lawsuit was filed last April against Apple and five of the six largest publishing companies in the US, each of which has since settled out of court leaving Apple as the sole defendant in this trial. The suit alleges that Apple, in cooperation with the publishers, colluded to artificially inflate e-book prices, and force Amazon to adopt pricing set by the publishers instead of allowing e-book retailers to set their own pricing, as had been done previously. According to the DoJ, this has resulted in e-book buyers paying “tens of millions of dollars more for e-books than they otherwise would have paid.”. If found guilty Apple will not have to pay a fine, but will likely have to submit to greater oversight of its operations.

HILDA ANNA REMPEL (ENNS) Hilda Anna was born to Peter and Anna Enns in Mission BC on March 3 1945. Hilda was the second of four daughters born into this family following the older sister, Hedi. Erika and Martha soon followed completing this family. Sadly Martha only lived to the age of one year. Hilda grew up on a small farm north of Mission, attended school in Mission, playing piano for the church choir and graduating from high school in 1963. During Hilda’s teen years the family had a huge setback when Hilda’s father suddenly died of a severe stroke when she was only16 years old. Life was suddenly very challenging for the Enns family. That same year Hilda decided to be baptized upon the confession of her faith in God and decided to join the Cedar Valley Mennonite Church in Mission. After Graduating from high school Hilda took three years of nurses training at Vancouver General Hospital and graduated as a Registered Nurse. This was a career well suited to the personality and gifts of the kind caring Hilda that all of us came to know in later years as our paths crossed with her. She then worked at the Vancouver General Hospital for a short time. On October 5th 1968 Hilda was married to John Rempel who was working for the Ministry of Forests in Terrace BC. For the next three and a half years the Rempels lived in Terrace and Hilda served as nurse at Mills Memorial Hospital. In spring of 1972 John was transferred to Atlin in northern BC, a summer posting only in those days. This would be the test of truly rural living. They both passed the test and were rewarded with a transfer to Burns Lake in the fall of 1972. Hilda soon began working part time at the Burns Lake and District Hospital. Then an opportunity to work with Dr. Magee at the Medical Clinic opened up and many of us have been blessed if we could be led to the little room by Hilda. She always had a smile and a word of encouragement or maybe a question about one of your loved ones. The First Mennonite Church was also blessed to have both John and Hilda in its congregation. Their gifts have been used on many fronts. Hilda sat through many a service sitting at the piano. The home on Tchesinkut Lake and trips to many places including Europe brought much joy to John and Hilda. In spring of 1977 David John, their chosen son came to make this family complete. The family began traveling differently as they set out to explore the camping world beginning with a camper and moving up to the 5th wheel experience. After a few years Hilda went back to work at the Medical Clinic where she worked until her retirement in 2004. By the time Hilda retired her mother and John’s parents had passed on and the they had moved into town. Trips to the Fraser Valley were replaced by trips to Kamloops where David lived and developed his career as a chef. Hilda’s retirement plans were to garden, sew, play piano and travel. Then in 2006 these goals were substituted for many trips to the cancer clinics for tests and treatments. It started with back pain then multiple compression fractures showed us all that something was very seriously wrong. Hilda shrunk at least 4 inches that year and left her with what looked like a severe case of osteoporosis. It took about a year to get the diagnosis when it was determined that Hilda was suffering from a rare type of bone cancer along with the effects of the osteoporosis. Many trips to the Cancer Centre in Smithers and Prince George resulted – as many as 2 per week one winter – for treatment. Hilda was a wonderful care giver as we know from our experiences with her but in the end she became the one who needed the care. Hilda was a top notch patient as well and always expressed her gratitude for the great care she received at the many clinics and offices over the past seven years. Then Hilda was hospitalized for her final days. Then about 7:30 AM on May 21, 2013 after having lived 68 years, 2 months and 18 days, Hilda was healed as she passed on to be with her Lord and Saviour. Hilda was predeceased by her: Parents Peter and Anna Enns, Sister Martha, and Brother in Law Alan Greenwood. Hilda leaves to mourn her: Husband John, Son David, Sister Hedi Greenwood of Toronto, Sister Erika Enns and her husband Alan Bruce of Campbell River, Nephew James Greenwood of Toronto, and many many Friends.
