For the past few weeks, Sardis Secondary senior Russell Rosenburg has been perfecting his construction of a hardwood coffee table emblazoned with an orca design ahead of this week’s national Skills Canada competition. Since receiving the scope documents, including technical drawings and a strict list of materials, in May, Rosenburg has built one table for practice, and has started on a second. “It’s the thing I like to do,” he said. “The time really goes by quick.” Rosenburg enjoys woodwork-

ing, but will enter the University of Victoria’s civil engineering department in September. Carpentry will be a good hobby for the future, he said. Nevertheless, the skills of precise construction, spatial intelligence, and mathematics are sure to come in useful to a budding engineer. Rosenburg, competing in cabinetmaking, will head to Skills Canada nationals alongside three other Chilliwack students, all from Sardis Secondary: Joseph Ryan competing in mechanical computer-aided design; Johnathon Hergott in welding; and Justin Emery in IT, network systems administration. All four won gold at regionals and provincials in their categories,

and will now compete against over 500 trades and technology students from across every province and territory at the nationals on June 5–8 at Vancouver’s BC Place. Over at a restaurant in Chilliwack, recent Abbotsford Secondary graduate Amie Peters develops her culinary methods as a line cook. She’s competing in the culinary arts portion of the nationals, and will have to prepare a breakfast plate consisting of an omelette florentine, salsa, and fruit garnish on the first day. On day two, Peters will be judged on her preparation of a cream of mushroom soup, French chicken breast, potato gnocchi, and vegetables. She landed her current job at

It looks like the return of the downtown Christmas parade may be imminent. Three Rotary clubs have stepped forward to take over the organization of the hugely popular downtown event held in early December. The hiatus in 2012 of the parade was due to the inability to find an organizing team that wanted to take on the varied demands of the annual season event. Star-FM stepped into the void temporarily in 2011, but a permanent host could not be found. But it looks like that’s about to change. The Rotary officials from three local clubs approached the city earlier this year about jointly taking over the host role of the 2013 Christmas Parade, calling it simply the Rotary Christmas Parade, and asking the city for $9,000, which they hope to match with a CDI funding request. The budget is $18,000, and the Rotary Clubs of Chilliwack, of Chilliwack/Fraser and Chilliwack Mt. Cheam, will chip in $3,000 each, plus staff and in-kind support. “Many community members and organizations have expressed a desire to have the parade return as part of the local Christmas tradition,” writes Rotary Club of Chilliwack Mt. Cheam member Kirsten Mundstock in the CDI funding application. “The parade builds community spirit, cohesiveness and memories.” Upon approval of the CDI funding, a Rotary committee is ready to jump into action to plan the parade for later this year.

Few surprises in final tally of election results Alina Konevski The Progress

Absentee votes couldn’t shake the Liberals’ wins in the Chilliwack ridings. With the final count completed, the results are official: John Martin is the new MLA for Chilliwack, and Laurie Throness for Chilliwack-Hope. The number of people who voted this season is up slightly from the 2009 election. In Chilliwack, 56 per cent of registered voters cast a ballot this year, compared with only 51 per cent in 2009. In ChilliwackHope, 58 per cent of registered voters came out, compared with

52 per cent in the last provincial election. The improvement in turnout could be a result of more people taking advantage of convenient advance voting areas, with shorter line-ups and long operating hours spread over multiple days. In Chilliwack-Hope, nearly a quarter of all votes this year came through the advance booths, up seven points from 2009. The gains in Chilliwack were more modest: 18 per cent of votes were in advance of general voting day, compared with 16 per cent in 2009. Absentee votes are also rising, bringing a few extra percentage points to the

final count. The courtesy of flexible voting comes at a price. Although the final calculation for this election won’t be available until next year, the past few provincial elections have seen a dramatic jump in cost to the taxpayer. The 2009 election was the most expensive yet, at $11.77

per registered voter. The 2001 and 2005 elections were both just over $8. In 1928, the earliest that data is available, a vote cost the province 70 cents. Provincially, the Liberals may have lost one seat to the NDP in Coquitlam-Maillardville once the absentee votes rolled in. However,

Biologist Carin Bondar of Chilliwack is heading to Edinburgh, Scotland this weekend to take part in TEDGlobal as one of its inspired summer presenters. “It’s a little overwhelming,” Bondar tells The Progress. She’s preparing to be one of 70 international presenters at the ‘Think Again’ TEDGlobal Conference June 10-14, as well as some jet-setting and shooting video across the globe for science. “I can’t even tell you how thrilled I am to have been asked, as a mother of four from

Chilliwack, to go to TEDGlobal, and to be doing all these crazy things.” Bondar is a science communicator, or “a biologist with a twist,” as she says on her website. She’s a blogger, web and TV host, crayfish expert, and the author of The Nature of Human Nature. She likes to tackle an array of weird and wonderful science topics. Dr. Bondar has netted more than seven million hits on the Wild Sex series she hosts, and she was shooting another web series pilot based on her book for PBS at Kim Mallory’s photo studio in downtown Chilliwack last week.

The people at TED contacted Bondar, who has a PhD in population ecology from UBC, to ask her to be a speaker. “I’ll be talking about several things you didn’t know about wild sex.” The visual and short video based talk she has prepared will look at how the evolution of society was influenced by sex. She’ll be showing a lot of um, er, graphics. But since the education level of attendees is so high, the talk will be quite formal, with academic language, and without the use of slang or street language, she underlines. Bondar is also just back in Chilliwack from parts of Tahiti and all over the U.S. where she

shot episodes with none other than Stephen Hawking, as one of a team of five scientists. She was working 14 hours a day on two series for the Discovery Channel, the hugely popular Outrageous Acts of Science and the high-tech based Brave New World. The high-tech show had her embedded with virtual SWAT teams and driving an electric BMW through the streets of Boston. It’s the prestigious TED talks this week and then onto the Australian National Science Week after that, and something with the Science Channel after that. Continued: Bondar/ p10

Every Chilliwack neighbourhood will eventually see some growth, according to the projections. With that in mind, live polling and group discussion tables are set to be a part of two Community Café events hosted by the city this week to get people chatting about Chilliwack’s future growth. City of Chilliwack has been conducting an OCP review all year long. Topics this week include: planning for change in neighbourhoods, increasing residential densities the right way, regulating colour and design of commercial development, local economic opportunities, and building a healthier community. Since losing her husband to cancer two years ago, Colleen Johnson has walked in the Chilliwack Hospice Society’s annual fundraising hike alongside her three children. Her late husband Wayne spent his last 18 days at the Cascade Hospice Residence, where the compassionate care he received eased the transition. “We made a real emotional commitment to let people know about the services that hospice provides, because they were so helpful to us,” said Colleen. “We’ll all be there as a family, carrying on in the memory of my husband’s name.” The society is holding its 12th annual Hike for Hospice fundraiser this Sunday at 2 p.m. at

Townsend Park. Many participants who complete the two- or fivekilometre walk do so in memory of a loved one. Since 1986, the Chilliwack Hospice Society has comforted the dying and their families. In addition to running a residence, the society’s volunteers visit palliative patients in hospitals, keep them company if family members need to be away, and help patients relax through therapies. The society also offers solace to the bereaved through support groups, a service that the Johnsons found especially welcome. Colleen has since started volunteering for the hospice, and plans to do more once she retires in a few weeks. Her family received an award at last year’s Hike for Hospice for raising the most funds of any group. All hospice programs are free, and dependent on community fundraising. Continued: Hike/ p15

Party in the Park organizers are asking the city to boost their funding allotment this year by about $8,000. Last year the Downtown Chilliwack BIA received $7,000 in CDI funding from City of Chilliwack for the event, which was up $2,000 from the year before, due to rising costs. In 2012, about 30,000 people took in the Party in the Park (PITP) excitement. PITP is the music and entertainment series in Central Community Park held for eight consecutive Friday nights, which kicks off the first week of July. “Due to rising costs to host the event, and declining sponsorship dollars, the BIA has requested an additional funding on top of their CDI application for a total of $16,000 for 2013,” according to the staff report by Carolyn Marleau. The BIA already had $7,000 approved for 2013. The extra funds would cover additional infrastructure costs, and sound and stage requirements of more than $5,000, and more. “The fact that this event has been so positively embraced by the community motivates us to put on the best possible event despite the challenges we face,” wrote PITP chair Lois Chadburn to the city. Some event sponsors and in-kind donors have been reluctant to commit this year, due to economic hardship factors. “As a result, we find ourselves short of our budget requirements,” Chadburn said. Officials are predicting a $8,000 deficit based on this year’s PITP budget, “although they are still pursuing sponsorship” options, according to city staff report. In 2012 there was a surplus of $1,187. Council is expected to vote on the matter Tuesday, and staff is recommending approval of covering any revenue shortfall for PITP, up to $8,830.

Municipal politicians from across the country flooded into Vancouver over the weekend. They were there for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ annual convention. And while their backgrounds were as diverse as the communities they represented, their message was strikingly similar: Fix the funding. It’s not a new complaint. For decades Canada’s cities have been telling Ottawa that they need more money if they are to do the things they are increasingly expected to do. The complaints began in the 1990s, when the federal government began to cut funding as it dealt with a ballooning deficit and public debt. As transfer payments to provincial governments shrank, so too did many of the services the federal government traditionally provided (like low cost housing). Provincial governments tried to take up the slack, but inevitably the cuts continued to trickle down to municipalities. Today, cities like Chilliwack are faced with providing a level of service they never did in the past, particularly in the realm of social services, transportation, and protective service like policing. They’ve done this because they’ve had little choice; there is no one left to download the cuts to. Instead, they must find new revenue from a taxpayer pool that is shallow and offers little flexibility. Deferring expenses is an option. But as roads and bridges deteriorate, it leads to an “infrastructure deficit” that must eventually be paid off. That’s left municipalities calling for a change in the way cities are funded. According to a report released at the convention, the current relationship between municipal and federal levels of government is “dysfunctional.” It cites the fact that despite their evolving and expanding responsibilities, municipalities only receive eight cents of every tax dollar raised. There were promises of new money at the convention, but that’s not enough. What is needed is a change in the way the funding flows. Canada’s cities have grown up. It is time governments stop treating them like children that are incapable of spending their allowance responsibly. ~ Greg Knill, Chilliwack Progress

Enbridge fails to meet critical environment test The B.C. Liberal government may have rejected Enbridge’s Northern Gateway Pipeline proposal, bur the debate is far from over. Its position was pretty much expected by the Alberta and federal governments as well as Enbridge. “British Columbia thoroughly reviewed all of the evidence and submissions made to the panel and asked substantive questions about the project including its route, spill response capacity and financial structure to handle any incidents,” said Environment Minister Terry Lake. “Our questions were not satisfactorily answered during these hearings.” The province set the bar high before any endorsement could be contemplated for this highly controversial project. There has been overwhelming opposition to Enbridge’s plan, prompting the Christy Clark government to set

down five conditions. The Alberta oil patch seems to overlook the fact that, while they crave access to Asian markets, the pathway to getting there is across B.C. We’ll be carr ying the cost of damage as first responders to a spill. For all the mop-up crews Enbridge will provide, environmental damage could Margaret be long term or EVANS permanent. Consequently, the Clark government set down five non-negotiable conditions to be met. They include an environmental review process, worldleading marine and land-based oil spill responses, prevention and recovery systems, aboriginal treaty rights and beneficial opportunities for First Nations’ people,

and a fair share in the economic benefits of this venture. The twinned pipeline project is a $5.5 billion proposal by Canadian oil and gas company, Enbridge, to build a pipeline system 1,177 kilometres long from Bruderheim, Alberta to Kitimat on the west coast. Every day, some 525,000 barrels of diluted bitumen will flow west to the coast while along a parallel pipeline 193,000 barrels of condensate will flow back to Alberta to dilute the next batch of oil. The Northern Gateway project will see pipelines cross inaccessible wilderness and 764 watercourses. Talk pipeline and in the same breath comes the fear of spills. Moving Alberta’s heavy bitumen crude comes with its own set of problems. Enbridge has a less than stellar track record when it comes to both a spill event and their management of spills. A spill

in B.C.’s rugged and remote north will be all the more problematic given the fact that diluted bitumen can sink in watercourses making cleanup so difficult. Enbridge faced that dilemma during a spill in Michigan. In its report, the province noted, somewhat caustically, that Enbridge still hasn’t learned from its oil spill mistakes. According to the Clark government’s report to the Joint Review Panel, “If a spill were to occur during a period of high flow conditions, a common occurrence in British Columbia rivers, then some aspects of the response may have to be curtailed or at least delayed until the high flow event recedes. At certain water velocities, booms become ineffective and are potentially unsafe to operate. The presence of heavy snow could also impede access during response operations, requiring use of snowmobiles, snow cats,

Snow accumulation can reach 8-9 metres, Weather may limit the ability of helicopters to aid in spill response.” The fact is, Enbridge still doesn’t have its spill details in place yet. “Northern Gateway has said that they would provide effective spill response in all cases,” said Lake. “However, they have presented little evidence as to how they will respond. For that reason, our government cannot support the issuance of a certificate for the pipeline as it was presented to the Joint Review Panel.” Shortly, the Review Panel will start hearing final arguments then present its report to the federal government. In the meantime, the feds should spend less time promoting the pipeline and more time putting in place effective regulations to meet B.C.’s concerns.

The Drumline Band Members who “wowed” everyone with their perfect and fantastic performance that keeps their fans returning for more and never disappoints. They showed great respect and support for the Gogos commitment to improve the lives of our African Sisters. The World Famous, Simon Fraser University Pipe Band that rendered an amazing and impeccable rendition of their unmatched talent, waived their fee to assist our cause and generously donated the proceeds from the sale of their C.D.’s. The Drum Cafe whose drumming, dancing and singing is incredibly colourful and beyond most of our imaginings. It gave us a taste for more and a desire to celebrate the richness of the African culture. They also shared their sale proceeds with the Gogos! The Sardis Elementary Choir who put their hearts and souls into the finale, as only young kids can, and touched everyone with the sweet concentrated effort they put into their performance - what a way to end the show! A very deep and heartfelt thanks to Ruth Jenkins who spoke with dignity and conviction of her struggle and her choice to live a normal, productive life with HIV

and her refusal to let HIV define her. Ruth’s powerful message was so touching and effective that it brought the crowd of 1,000 to a standing ovation of respect for her choices and courage. The classical tones of the Student Orchestral Musicians that welcomed the crowd, with the finesse of professionals, was a great touch and much appreciated by all. To all the “behind the scenes” students who worked diligently to erect the sets, decorate, and did clean up with no mumbling or grumbling - they just did it! To the school staff: Custodians, Teachers and a special thanks to Joann Krawchuck for her management of ticket sales. To London Drugs for selling tickets. To parents who chauffeured and who have nurtured some incredible kids! To our own amazing Gogos that worked tirelessly. The Chilliwack school district is in the final stages of a complete technology infrastructure overhaul, laying the foundation for creative, high-tech instruction to emerge. The three-year, $3 million project will be completed in October, and will see every school in the district with fast wireless connections, ceiling-mounted projectors and speakers in classrooms, secure computer servers, and new wiring and switches. Prior to the upgrades, only 20 per cent of Chilliwack’s elementary schools met these standards, according to an analysis completed by IBM. The district consulted with the company to create a list of recommendations to follow throughout the project. “Our technology was very old, and it wasn’t supporting learning to its potential,” said Kirk Savage, the school district’s director of instruction leading the upgrades. Throughout the project, the school district also purchased 1,800 new computers, about 55 per school, to outfit the computer

labs and mobile laptop carts. All computers are now Lenovos on Windows 7, as opposed to the previous glitchy Linux systems. The upgrades aren’t about teaching students Word or Excel, but about using the tools relevant to today’s society to teach the same age-old skills, such as communication, and critical thinking, explained Savage. In the past, the tools were pen and paper, then typewriters, then computers. Now, the tools are online applications, and the laptops and wireless connections that allow access to that. “At the end of the day, we’re really teaching kids how to communicate. The tools changed,” said Savage. With reliable WIFI, projectors, and computers, schools in Chilliwack have taken individual initiative to purchase devices such as Smart Boards. The large touchscreen whiteboards allow students to share their typed English homework with the class, or analyze math problems as a group. Schools have also purchased iPads and iPod Touches to share among students for education apps. And they have purchased specialized microphones for teachers to wear

around the neck to enhance the voice. “Having an increased reliability of bandwidth is really so critical for us to be able to really grow technology in the school,” said Aaron Parker, principal at Chilliwack Middle School. “When you’re working with low bandwidth, you’re getting knocked off the internet frequently, your systems are down often. You can’t rely on that.” These structural improvements have meant that CMS could take its new robotics program much farther. Integrated last year into the Grade 8 science curriculum, students build small robots from specialized Legos, and program them — using the mobile laptop carts — to complete various tasks. The technology upgrades have allowed Chilliwack students and teachers to be more creative, said Ian Gardner, vice-principal and Grade 5 teacher at Strathcona Elementary. For instance, blogging has replaced traditional journaling in Gardner’s classroom. Because he’s able to sign out one of the school’s two mobile laptop carts, each containing 15 computers, Gardner assigns a “topic of

the day” writing assignment to students through Edublog, a free, third-party educational blogging website. Students now embed videos into their journal entries. They format and post other class assignments, such as social science projects. They share their work with their friends in other classrooms, read the blogs of other students, and provide comments. The basic, sometimes mundane grade school journal has become fun and authentic for students, said Gardner, because it now has real-world relevance. It isn’t just a teacher reading the entries; it’s the peers. Through the blogs, Gardner also teaches about being responsible online, including safety and politeness, which is especially useful in an era when most students have Facebook and other social media profiles. “The possibilities really are limitless. Now it’s a question of how comfortable teachers are with the new technology, and how easy it is for students to access it,” said Gardner. Learning is also becoming much more personalized. With

WIFI capability at schools, the nontraditional classroom at Watson Elementary that serves students with special needs is now full of iPads. The devices allow students who struggle with verbal communication to express themselves and participate in classroom learning more effectively than before. The Chilliwack school district’s $3 million infrastructure upgrades, made possible in part through a budget surplus, have equalized local schools. Children from East Chilliwack to Greendale to Little Mountain now have the same tools. “We don’t want to have schools that are ‘have’ schools, and schools that are ‘have not’ schools,” said Savage. Students are also better equipped for the future. “The jobs that the kids are going to have when they graduate school aren’t even created yet,” said Savage. “It’s an ever-changing landscape when it comes to technology and what’s going on out there in the field. With graduation ceremonies on the horizon, local RCMP are hoping high school seniors choose to celebrate responsibly. In particular, Cpl. Len vanNieuwenhuizen worries about the upsurge in bush parties and alcohol use. “The exuberance of celebration coupled with alcohol consumption causes youth to engage in high risk behaviour that could cause harm or loss of life,” he said. “We always worry about impaired driving, and unfortunately we often experience the loss of a young life as a result of high risk behaviour. This diminishes and destroys what should be a joyous time for our community.” RCMP ask for help from family, friends and the community to keep things safe. They’re also concerned about property-damage issues. Reports of graffiti and vandalism at local schools spike at this time of year. “This does not reflect school spirit and only hurts the students,” vanNieuwenhuizen said. “The money and resources it takes to repair and clean it up could be better spent in other areas. Vandalism and graffiti are criminal offenses and will be treated as such.”

On track at provincials Chilliwack athletes fought tooth-and-nail at last weekend’s BC High School Track and Field Championships, doing their best against the province’s best. The meet was held May 31 and June 1 at McLeod Athletic Park in Langley. Rosedale middle school’s Tasha Willing led the way, competing in three events. Against older competition in senior girls discus, Willing was 11th with a throw of 31.34m. She finished seventh in hammer throw with a toss to 38.47m. Her third event was the shot-put where she finished seventh with a mark of 9.80m. Sardis secondary’s Ashley Heisler competed in the senior girls’ 400m dash, placing seventh in heat three with a time of 1:06.55. She fared better in the 800m run, placing second in her heat with a time of 2:29.66, though she missed finals in both events. Heisler ran a pair of relay races with SSS teammates Jennifer

Wiebe, Lauren Kean, Michaela England and Caitlin Geary. In the 4x100m, the Sardis sprinters (Heisler, Wiebe, England and Geary) placed fourth in their heat with a time of 54.08 seconds, failing to qualify for finals. In the 4x400m, the Sardis sprinters (Heisler, Kean, England and Geary) placed second in their heat with a time of 4:23.48, but again missed the finals. Chilliwack secondary school’s Caitlin LeBlanc competed in the senior girls’ 1500m steeplechase finals, placing ninth with a time of 5:56.17. Unity Christian’s Katie Procee was sixth in a senior girls’ 400m hurdles heat, clocking in at 1:19.46. GW Graham’s Jesse MacDuff competed in a pair of senior boys’ running events. In the 800m, he placed sixth in his heat with a time of 2:05.53. In the 1500m, he placed 13th in his heat with a time of 4:28.15. He didn’t qualify for finals in either event.

In flight one of the senior boys’ high jump, Hope secondary school’s Travis Herrling was 13th with a mark of 1.75m. In the same event, GW Graham’s Ryan Higuchi was 26th at 1.60m. Higuchi was 21st in the senior boys’ long jump event, leaping 5.86m and placed 18th in tripe jump with a mark of 11.91m. Hope’s Blake Deschenes had a busy meet, trying his luck in 11 events. His best was the senior mens’ high jump, where he earned bronze with a mark of 1.59m. Deschenes was sixth in the 100m dash (13.44s), 400m dash (1:05.67), 110m hurdles (21.80s), javelin (29.97m) and 1500M (5:45.15). He was seventh in the discus (20.79m) and pole vault (2.30m). He was eighth in the decathlon (3051 points), long jump (4.61m) and shot-put (7.09m). In the senior boys’ pole vault, Hope’s Jeremiah Steberl was 16th at 2.70m.

Middle schoolers make mark Chilliwack-area middle school students in Grades 8 and 9 competed in their own track and field provincials last weekend. Their event was also held at McLeod Athletic Park in Langley. AD Rundle had Noah Bailey competing in the boys’ shot-put, where he placed 20th with a mark of 9.86 metres. In the girls’ shot-put, Morgan Miller hit 7.46m to finish 15th. Vedder middle school’s Tanner Geary competed in two events. He was 11th in the 800m run preliminaries with a time of 2:08.86, and 22nd in the 400m dash preliminaries with a time of 57.83 seconds. His 800m time was two seconds better than his previous personal best.

Afton Servatius ran the 80m hurdles, setting a new personal best with a 14.77 second mark in preliminaries. Samir Rehmtulla competed in two long-distance running events, making the finals in both. He placed 21st overall in the 1500m run at 4:41.66, and 22nd in the 3000m run at 10:14.08. GW Graham had two athletes qualify for finals. Begiizhik Nahwegabow was 19th in the girls’ long jump with a leap of 4.26m. Kate Sokolowski was 20th in the girls’ 1500m run with a time of 5:15.60. She also competed in the 800m run, clocking in at 2:39.28 in a preliminary race.

Kraemer’s crew makes noise in NCAA tourney debut Chilliwack native Shane Kraemer had the best seat in the house for history, taking in South Dakota State’s first ever division one baseball tournament game on Friday. From the dugout, Kraemer watched his crew open with a regional game in Eugene, OR, against the University of Oregon Ducks. The Jacks held their own in a tough matchup against the

national eight-seed, and led 2-0 through four innings. But the Ducks got one in the fifth and two in the eighth to get the win. Needing a win in their second game, the Jacks instead saw their tournament hopes come crashing down with a 4-3 extra-innings loss to the University of San Francisco Dons on Saturday. Kraemer saw action in this one. The left-handed senior came on

in the 13th inning and walked two batters to load the bases. Chad Hodges took over, yielding a sacrifice fly that plated the winning run. Though his season ended in disappointment, the Sardis secondary school grad played a huge role in getting the Jackrabbits to the tournament in the first place. He started the final game of the Summit League tournament, pitch-

ing South Dakota to a 1-0 win over North Dakota and the school’s first ever Summit League title. The Chilliwack kid didn’t allow a hit through his first three-and-athird innings. He got into some trouble in the fifth, but worked through it to strand runners on first and third base. Kraemer left with two out and two on in the sixth, with reliever Stephen Bougher inducing a

double-play to end the threat. Kraemer joined the Jacks in 2010, splitting the last four seasons between starting and the bullpen. He went 2-2 in six starts this season, allowing 38 hits through 27.1 innings while walking 10 and striking out 23. Kraemer went 2-1 in 15.1 innings of relief, allowing 23 hits and six walks while striking out 16. He majors in political science.

Jim was born in Abbotsford on May 25th 1953 and passed away on May 29th, 2013 after celebrating his 60th birthday with family and friends. Jim is predeceased by his father John, his mother Shirley and his eldest granddaughter Sheena. He is survived by his wife Riette, daughter Lisa (Dwayne), granddaughters Tasha, Kim, Briana, Brooklyn and Summer as well as by his sister Lynn, his brother Dale, his sisters-in-law Kristel (Dale), Marilyn (Gordon), brother-in-law Harold (Brenda) and many nieces, nephews and cousins in the United States, Fraser Valley and Hope, B. C. Jim was a man of the Canadian woods who never met a logging road he didnâ€™t love. His loved to fish and was an expert on WWII battles as well as the history of Scotland. He worked as a Life Skills Coach and Addictions Counselor for many years most recently with City Life Recovery in Chilliwack. His contributions to the changed lives of others will only be calculated in eternity. There will be a Celebration of Life Memorial service for Jim on Wednesday, June 5th at 1:00 P:M at City Life Church, Chilliwack.

KOCZKUR Peter Anthony Peter Anthony Koczkur passed away on May 28, 2013 at Chilliwack Hospital at the age of 67 years. He was born June 6, 1945 in Port Arthur Ontario to parents Peter & Anne Koczkur. Pete was the youngest of four boys. He joined the Army in 1962 at age 17 with postings in Chilliwack, Germany, Gage Town, New Brunswick; retiring from the Service back to Chilliwack in 1973. Pete worked in construction for various companies until 1991 when he and Shirley created their own company â€œCoverall Exteriorsâ€?. Pete enjoyed spending time with Shirley, their dog Nick and reading. Pete will be lovingly remembered by his wife Shirley Kathleen Koczkur, son Joe (Glynis), daughter Angela, stepson Terry Foord and grandchildren Erin, Cley, Jake, Kelly and Karissa. He was predeceased by his parents, his first wife Joanne and brothers Jack, Victor & Lou. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, June 7, 2013 at Woodlawn Mt.
