Message from the Mayor Chilliwack residents have been able to mark the start of summer with the leisurely play in one of the water spray parks, located at the Cheam and Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centres or at Central Community Park. This year, we have added two new jewels to the City’s bounty of outdoor activity spaces. The Island 22 Bike Skills Park is now complete and offers biking opportunities for both skilled and novice riders. Combining the Bike Skills Park with the other amenities at Island 22 such as the dog park, and equestrian area, the island is a destination location everyone should try to experience. The Jinkerson Grind, as it is affectionately known, has quickly become one of the most popular attractions in the community. Located at the base of Prest Road this 228 stair climb and adjacent trail system offers a great workout in itself, however if you are looking for an even greater challenge join the ‘Grind’ with a hike up Mt Thom, the view from the top will have made it all worthwhile. The Active for Life, ‘Chilliwack Walks’ program returns again this year providing, at no cost, eight walks in eight weeks. What a great way to be active all while exploring some of the beautiful parks and trails in our area. If indoor activity is more to your liking take advantage of some of the many offered by the contributors in this Summer Edition of the Leisure Guide. This guide is the result of the partnerships between the City of Chilliwack, the Association of Community Programmers and School District #33. Each contributor brings with them an expertise that collectively addresses the needs and interests of residents in our community. On behalf of Chilliwack Council, have a great summer and take advantage of our many recreational opportunities!

Meetings...

Sporting Events...

the City of Chilliwack has a facility to meet all your needs: evergreen Hall

Located at 9291 Corbould Street, the Evergreen Hall is a prime location to host gatherings of various types and sizes. The Cheam Room is a full size gymnasium, which can host 450 people in a banquet setting and as many as 650 people in a theatre style setting. The Minto Room has a capacity to host 20 –25 people and is ideal for small gatherings. The Slesse Room has a capacity to host up to 70 people if a mid size setting is what you are seeking.

the Landing Sports Centre

There is more to this facility than meets the eye. Located at 45530 Spadina Avenue, the Landing Sports Centre’s main floor has the capacity to host gatherings for as many as 1870 people. The Loft area provides space large enough for 250 people in a banquet setting and up to 300 people in a theatre setting. If a small meeting room is what you need,

Formal Gatherings...

the Clover Room has a meeting capacity of 30. If you enjoy playing tennis year round, the Landing Sports Centre can accommodate you with the four indoor tennis courts housed in the main floor and drop-in tennis is available from October 1st through to March 31st of each year.

Chilliwack Parks, recreation & Culture Information exhibition Field

To accommodate the growth and future needs of sports field facilities, a new CFL football-sized artificial turf field will be constructed on the Exhibition Field site. The project will begin in June of this year and is scheduled to be completed in the Fall of 2013. The conversion to artificial turf will provide a multi-purpose year-round sports surface that will accommodate inclement weather conditions. On completion not only will there be more hours available for usage but when done the facility will have the ability to play host to several more minisoccer games at one time than before, as well as having the ability to host field lacrosse and high school football.

townsend Park

The Artificial Turf Field, constructed at the East end of Townsend Park, has some exciting features: • It can sustain up to 6x the play of natural turf • It doesn’t require rest periods for turf to heal • It reduces the burden on other natural fields • Maintenance costs are similar to premier natural turf • New turf technologies incorporate crumb rubber to reduce injuries • This field is only closed when snow accumulates on it. Otherwise it stays open in all weather conditions

twin rinks

Located at 5725 Tyson Road, the Twin Rinks ice arena was founded in 1982. It is the premier location for public skating, drop-in hockey as well as organized ice sports such as Minor Hockey, Seniors Recreational Hockey, Figure Skating and Speed Skating. If you are planning a special event such as a birthday party, or corporate event, Twin Rinks can accommodate you with skate rentals and meeting rooms for office festivities.

Chilliwack Parks, Recreation & Culture

Parks & Trails Chilliwack residents have enjoyed the workout of walking the pathway constructed along Teskey Road down to the intersection of Prest Road and Bailey Road. Building on this success the City of Chilliwack constructed 228 stairs along a utility corridor connecting the lower part of this pathway to the end of Jinkerson Road. The pathway is comprised of two sections with a viewing bench part of the way up as a way to rest from what could be deemed as an aggressive climb. In keeping with the City’s goal to look at sustainable options throughout our operations, the stairs are made of plastics recycled from damaged cars. That’s right it is the bumper, dash, and wiring from compressed vehicles that have been imbedded into the stair timbers. Beside the positive reusing of this material, it will also last a very long time, won’t leach into the soil, won’t rot or degrade and will resist warping. This will increase the stairs’ sustainability thereby reducing the impact on the environment. The addition of the staircase creates a ‘grind’ that offers the ultimate workout. As indicated in the accompanying map a route can start at the intersection of Prest and Bailey, up the 228 stairs to Jinkerson. Users can then move along Jinkerson to Skyline Drive where they can climb just over 100 concrete stairs to Vista Place. Vista then connects uphill to Sylvan Drive. Following Sylvan to the west users can climb 100 wooden stairs onto Thom Creek Trail. This ultimately leads to the challenging but rewarding climb up to the summit of Mt. Thom.

Parks and Trails: Island 22 Bike Skills Park Island 22 Bike Skills Park is a multi-faceted skills park; its design was based on input from the local riding community and is intended to appeal to riders of all levels, from beginner to expert. The skills part is located in a spectacular natural environment at Island 22 Regional Park and features 5 different riding areas and one perimeter trail. The riding areas are organized in zones as follows: A - skills zone B - progression jumps C - flow return jumps D - drop zone E - advanced jumps The Bike Park is the result of a partnership between the City of Chilliwack and the Fraser Valley Regional District and was designed with safety in mind. To maintain the integrity and safety of the park, all homemade jumps will be removed. Riders are reminded that helmets are mandatory and other protective gear is strongly encouraged.

Waterfowl in Parks

Please do not feed the ducks and geese. While it is enjoyable to feed the waterfowl, it is also detrimental to them and to our environment. Feeding waterfowl: • Disturbs natural migration patterns, leading to extremely large concentrations of birds, Overcrowding can lead to disease and fighting amongst the population. • Destroys the birds’ ability to forage and find food for themselves. • Deprives the birds of essential nutrients and can cause serious digestive problems. • It reduces usable areas for people due to the large amounts of feces and potentially aggressive waterfowl. • It causes costly efforts to keep our parklands usable and clean and to manage the ever-increasing numbers of waterfowl. Feeding waterfowl is also illegal and can result in a fine of up to $2000 (Bylaw 2974). Please help us to manage these large waterfowl populations by allowing the birds to feed themselves. Remember, real geese do not eat bread.

Dog Off-Leash Parks

A Dog-Off Leash Parks are an ideal place where owners can take their dogs to run freely without a leash. However off-leash does not mean “out of control”. Pet Owners must ensure that their pets are controlled and not violent or aggressive. Pet owners must be onsite for the duration and must have a leash immediately available.

In order to ensure the safety of you and your pet, when visiting the Dog Park: • Please avoid bringing toys and food to the off-leash area when other dogs are present; • Please pick up after your dog and fill in any holes your dog digs to ensure a clean and safe play area; • A valid license and current vaccination for your dog is required

Community Profile: Chilliwack Lawn Bowling Club Although called Lawn Bowling the sport more closely resembles curling than it does bowling, as the object of the game is to place “biased” balls close to a smaller ball referred to as a ”jack” or “kitty”. The game has been traced as far as the time of Sir Walter Raleigh and was so

popular that it was banned in the kings court for fear that it might jeopardise the practise of archery. Currently played in over forty countries it’s gentle form but skilled execution has recruited a following of those aged nine to ninety, its social nature make it an even more enjoyable and popular

sporting event. In Chilliwack the Lawn Bowling Club was founded in 1922 and is located at the corner of Edward and Princess. Members can play seven days per week enjoying fresh air, exercise and meeting other like-minded people and all for a low membership fee of $30.00/month.

Swimming Lesson Descriptions What swim level is my child? We recommend a Free Assessment. Drop in anytime and have one of our aquatic specialists evaluate your child. Parent & tot (6 – 35 months) In this program we introduce your child to water, build their water confidence, and educate you as the parent on pertinent water safety. Our program consists of singing songs and playing interactive games, through fun group activities we will appeal to your child’s curiosity and desire for play, while we increase their comfort in and under the water. In addition, we will promote balance and movement; and begin swim skill acquisition. Preschool 1 (Ages 3 – 5) In this beginner level, all skills are assisted by the instructor. Using games and activities, swimmers will learn to submerge, open their eyes under water, develop basic floats, glides and kick. Preschool 2 – 3 (Ages 3 – 5) Swimmers will further develop unassisted floats, glides, and kicking. They will learn to swim up to 10 metres, and perform skills in deep water. Preschool 4 – 5 (Ages 3 – 5) Swimmers will increase their swimming distance to 20 metres, and their surface support to 20 seconds. They will learn the fundamentals of front crawl, back swim and be introduced to whip kick. The majority of this class is taught in deep water.

Swim Kids 1 – 2 (Ages 6+) This entry level program provides an orientation to safety around the water and pool area. Floats and glides with kick are introduced. Children build their endurance using flutter kick with assisted glides. Swim Kids 3 – 5 (Ages 6+) These levels build the child’s skill in front and back crawl, diving, sculling, and whip kick. They are taught to be water safe by understanding their own limits and learning boating skills. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and dolphin kick, up to a 50-metre swim. Swim Kids 6 – 7 Front and back crawl continue to be refined. Elementary backstroke and whip kick on the front are introduced. Ice safety, choking, and elementary rescue of others with throwing assists are taught. Endurance is built to a 150-metre swim. Swim Kids 8 – 10 Breaststroke, butterfly and scissor kick are introduced, and all strokes continue to be refined. Surface dives, rescues from ice, and rescue breathing are taught. They learn about fitness and making wise choices. Endurance is built using dolphin kick, butterfly drills and a 500-metre swim.

Private Lessons for Everyone Summer is the ideal time to try music lessons. The time commitment is short and the schedule is more flexible than during the school year. Summer students find out if private lessons are for them, and if they will establish a bond with their teacher. Current students benefit from summer lessons as well! Even a few lessons over the summer months can keep interest sharp and maintain those hard-earned skills from the previous term. The Chilliwack Academy’s teachers are screened for their credentials: in addition to an ARCT, many have at least one university degree in music. More importantly, our students LOVE their teachers! Find out why local families and music professionals have been recommending the Chilliwack Academy of Music for over 30 years.

Choosing a child care provider is a big decision. You want your child to feel at home, learn, grow and have fun in an environment that is welcoming, safe and stimulating. And most of all you want caring and supportive caregivers who understand what makes your child special. Through both our early years and before and after school licensed programs, kids learn values and positive behaviours in a supportive environment. Children have the opportunity to be active, have fun and develop confidence. Plus, parents get the peace of mind knowing that children are active and learning while spending time with friends and positive adult role models. We offer programs for the following ages: • Infant and toddler (0-36 months) • 3-5 year olds • Preschool • 5-12 year olds (before and after school)

Heritage Park Chilliwack Heritage Park is a 65 acre park that boasts a 150,000 square foot building which can accommodate a number of events. Trade Shows, Conventions, Concerts, Dog Shows, Horse Shows, Arena Cross Events, ABA BMX Bike Grand Nationals, Kart Racing and local club events just to name a few. There is a seven acre field for outdoor concerts and festivals as well as plenty of space for camping with your event. There is also a 5/8 mile race track and rodeo arena as well as two outdoor sand arenas for your many different equestrian and agricultural events. All arenas are equipped with outdoor lighting for those evening rentals. Heritage Park, which has been operational since July 2001, is ideally and conveniently located just off the Trans Canada Highway at Exit 116. This allows for easy access by those within Chilliwack as well as people living in the Lower mainland. The striking presence of this 150,000 square foot red building and 65 acre grounds also

attracts travellers from all over the Canada, as well as many visitors from the United States. Heritage Park is a versatile facility. Features include a flexible public address system, box office and show office. The building is comprised of four floors; two are concrete floors that measure approximately 35,000 square feet each. There is also a 48,000 square foot dirt floor and a 30,000 square foot dirt floor. We have 150 portable box stalls for your equestrian event that can be put up on either the concrete or dirt floors, depending on your requirements. The building houses a portable stage, as well as tables and chairs. Our washroom facilities include showers and are handicapped accessible. Heritage Park is not only a fine multiuse facility, but it also offers you a management and staff who are committed to your satisfaction. We would be pleased to work with you to help make your event a success.
