Teresa Christison is a Court Services justice data quality analyst in Victoria who has loved ‘pretty and fast’ cars since she was a little girl. The asking price was $3,000. “I knew I had to convince my dad to let me have it,” she recalls of her excitement 27 years ago. When Teresa and her father went to test drive the car, he said: “No way. It has too much power.” In the afternoon, five days before Christmas 1986, she and her mother went for another test drive. A trip to the bank and the insurance

company finalized the purchase. After 10 years of fun with the car, Teresa decided on a complete restoration. She was beside herself with excitement when she picked the car up after six months in the body shop. Volkswagen showcased a new Golf GTI concept for the track – the Design Vision GTI – at the annual enthusiasts’ meeting on the shores of Lake Worthersee in Reifnitz, Austria. More than 150,000 fans attended the annual gathering of the VW faithful to see the Design Vision GTI concept, designed by Volkswagen engineers and designers. Based on the seventh-generation Golf GTI, the Worthersee concept transfers the design and power potential of the iconic hot hatch to the world of racing. Using all the flexibility allowed by the Volkswagen Group’s MQB or Modular Transverse Matrix, the Design Vision GTI has a long wheelbase and short front overhangs.

Under the hood, a 3.0-litre V6 TSI engine with direct injection and turbocharger, which produces 500 hp, powers the Design Vision GTI. This power is channelled via a DSG gearbox to all four wheels; standstill to 100 km/h takes a mere 3.9 seconds. With this drivetrain and bespoke sports chassis the GTI concept is capable of handling the most demanding of racetracks. Of note in the cabin are an onboard camera and a facility to allow the driver to network with a social community from the car. A large display to the right of the main instruments shows the circuit being driven as well as times achieved. The display also communicates with other vehicles on the course and calculates details about the current status of the race in real time.

Mercedes-Benz announces four B-Class social media brand ambassadors Following an extensive cross-country search through the B-The Face contest and nearly 20,000 votes cast from coast-to-coast, Mercedes-Benz Canada has announced the four tech savvy and socially active individuals that have been chosen as social media ambassadors for the brand. The countrywide search for the B-Class brand agents began late last year and endeavoured to find candidates who personified four associated lifestyle pillars: B-Seen, B-Adventurous, B-Spontaneous and B-Playful. Canadians who felt they embodied one or more of these key characteristics were invited to apply for the chance to share their active and urbane lifestyle through social networks and event activations as the face of the respective pillar they best characterize. The extremely competitive field of applicants was ultimately narrowed down to four winners. The B-Seen category was the most highly sought after

classification, with more than 42 per cent of entrants selecting that pillar. B-Spontaneous, B-Playful and B-Adventurous were the next most popular categories respectively. Overall, Ontario had the most engagement of any province, with Quebec and British Columbia rounding out the top three in that order. On this 40th anniversary Porsche is now presenting the new generation 911 Turbo and Turbo S – the technological and dynamic performance peak of the 911 series. New all-wheel drive, active rear axle steering, adaptive aerodynamics, full-LED headlights and the up to 560 hp flat six-cylinder engine with twin-turbocharging underscore the role of the new generation 911 Turbo as a circuit racing car, everyday car and technology platform. The new 911 Turbo models will arrive in Canada in December 2013 with pricing starting at $169,200 for the Turbo and $206,600 for the Turbo S. Playing an equally crucial role are the entirely new chassis in lightweight design with a 100 mm longer wheelbase and larger 20-inch wheels. The PDCC active anti-roll system, offered for

the first time in 911 Turbo models, increases dynamic performance even more. This system is standard equipment in the 911 Turbo S, as is the Sport Chrono Package Plus with dynamic engine mounts and PCCB ceramic brakes; all of these features are also available as options in the 911 Turbo. The results: The new 911 Turbo S shortens the lap time for the North Loop of the Nürburgring to well under 7:30 minutes with standard production tires. The turbocharged 3.8-litre six-cylinder engine with direct petrol injection produces 520 hp in the 911 Turbo and 560 hp in the S model. Power is transferred to the drivetrain via the seven-speed dual clutch transmission (PDK), which now enables an auto start/stop function with engine shutoff that now activates earlier during coasting to a stop as well as a coasting function. Together with the new thermal management system for the turbo engine and the PDK transmission, fuel efficiency technologies have reduced NEDC fuel consumption by up to 16 per cent to 9.7L/100 km; these figures apply to both models.

The 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 is just one of three more efficient new engines for the Sierra. A standard 4.3-litre EcoTec3 V6 arrives this summer, and Sierra also will be available later this year with an all-new 6.2-litre EcoTec3 V8 with even more power, torque and capability than the 5.3-litre. With summer just around the corner, Canadian families will soon take to the open road. Now is a good time for summer roadtrippers to brush up on the important tips that can contribute to safe driving as they explore the great Canadian outdoors or enjoy an urban adventure. Michelin Canada encourages drivers to minimize the risk of on-road emergencies simply by preparing ahead of time, conducting proper safety checks and adhering to safe driving tips. Check Your Tires: After all, your tires are the only part of your car that touches the road. • Check your tires for wear – Using the ‘Penny Test,’ put the edge of the coin into the tread with the Queen going in headfirst. If the top of the Queen’s head is covered by tread, that’s good. If the top of her head is entirely visible, it’s time to replace the tire. • Check the air pressure – Tires have been known to lose up to 1 psi (pounds per square inch) of pressure every month. Use a proper pressure gauge to check pressure when tires are ‘cold’ (before driving or three hours after driving). Make sure your tires are inflated to the psi on the sticker inside the driver’s door of your car. DO NOT compare to the psi on your tire’s sidewall. • Don’t mix tires – If you’re replacing only two new tires instead of four, be sure they

are the same size and type as the current ones. Always install the new tires on the rear axle of your vehicle, which will reduce the risk of fishtailing and loss of stability in wet conditions. Wet Driving: Wet road conditions present dangers of less grip and longer stopping distance. • Slow down. Slowing down dramatically decreases the risk of accidents in rain. • Always drive with two hands on the steering wheel • Slow down before turning and maintain a consistent speed throughout the turn. • While turning, don’t make sudden steering wheel movements. • Only brake in a straight line before the turn and do so gradually. Do not brake during the turn. • Increase your following distance from other cars to allow for more stopping range. • If hydroplaning, do not accelerate or brake suddenly. Keep your foot lightly on the gas and steer the car forward until your tires regain traction. Blowouts: This can be one of the most frightening moments on the road. • As prevention, always drive with both hands on the wheel. • If you have a tire blowout, don’t panic. The loud noise will startle you, but follow these rules, and you’ll quickly and safely regain control. First, keep your foot on the gas, grip the wheel firmly and stay in your lane, then, slow down gradually and carefully steer toward the shoulder of the road.
