The final numbers for Abbotsford’s sixth annual Run for Water were simply staggering. Sunday’s event, which featured 5K, 10K, half-marathon and full marathon distanc-

es, drew a total of 4,830 registered runners – shattering last year’s record of 4,294. More importantly, participants joined forces to raise $358,000 to create access to clean drinking water for people in Ethiopia, via the Canadian non-profit agency HOPE International. That pushed the event’s cumulative total

BC Children’s Hospital helps kids get care closer to home BC Children’s Hospital has played a big role in Kaitlyn Morovic’s life. The three-yearold was born with Down syndrome and two holes in her heart, and spent the first six weeks of her life in the hospital. Her mother Heather still raves about the care Kaitlyn receives at Children’s while also celebrating the fact that she now has what she calls her “direct link” to BC Children’s in the form of Richmond-based pediatrician Dr. Erik Swartz. “Dr. Swartz has expertise in Kaitlyn’s condition and everything that’s secondary to it,” Morovic says. “Although Children’s is just 20 minutes away, it’s great to be able to get an appointment quickly with Dr. Swartz, and he’s just a few minutes from home.” Swartz works in the General Pediatrics Clinic, which is part of the Child Health Centre at Richmond Hospital. The Child Health Centre was established with $800,000 in support from Child Health BC, an initiative of BC Children’s Hospital aimed at ensuring all children in BC have access to a consistent standard of care no matter where in the province they live. The centre is also home to the Early Childhood Mental Health Program and the Noakes Primary Care Maternity Clinic. “The fact that Kaitlyn is able to receive specialized care so close to home is exactly

what we’re looking for,” says Dr. Maureen O’Donnell, executive director of Child Health BC. Child Health BC’s activities took off after Overwaitea Food Group became the lead benefactor with a pledge of $20 million in support in 2007. TELUS and Scotiabank later made gifts of $5 million and $1 million, respectively. This support had an immediate impact, says O’Donnell. Pediatric clinics established with Child Health BC’s support in Nanaimo and Prince George have thousands of patient visits annually; additional travelling clinics are staffed by BC Children’s caregivers in communities across the province; and over 1,000 health professionals have participated in Child Health BC’s workshops. O’Donnell credits Overwaitea Food Group’s donation with Child Health BC’s growing reach across the province, noting that it’s a perfect fit for an organization with a presence in so many BC communities. Overwaitea Food Group President Darrell Jones agrees. “We’re committed to the health and wellness of kids and families in BC,” says Jones. “We’ve been proud to support BC Children’s Hospital for more than two decades – and with the help of our communities, we’ve contributed millions of dollars toward hospital improvement projects,

advocacy programs and important research initiatives. We’re grateful for the amazing support of our local communities, team members, customers and supplier partners who have all played a key role in making this fundraising success possible.” Child Health BC is part of a larger transformation in the way BC’s children receive care, says Larry Gold, president of BC Children’s Hospital and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children. The transformation also includes the construction of a new BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver. “We want to ensure children have access to a consistent standard of care, whether they live in Smithers, Campbell River or Castlegar; and there will always be children who need care that’s only available in a children’s hospital,” says Gold. BC Children’s Hospital Foundation has raised close to $170 million, including Overwaitea Food Group’s gift and $25 million from Teck Resources Limited, in its $200-million capital campaign to support construction of the new hospital and Child Health BC. Gold says that the new hospital, which will open in 2018, will be family-friendly, making it easier for families from outside the Lower Mainland to remain with their children. Beyond the money being raised for the new hospital and Child Health BC, Gold says the hospital also counts on donations of about $14 million a year to support research, equipment purchases and training. On June 1 and 2 BC Children’s Hospital Foundation will hold its annual Miracle Weekend celebration on Global BC, to raise the millions the hospital needs to cover its urgent annual needs. “Every year people from across the province make donations in support of the hospital and it makes a huge difference,” says Gold. “Kaitlyn Morovic is proof of that.” Heather Morovic says she’s grateful for both the care Kaitlyn receives at BC Children’s and the support she gets on a regular basis from Dr. Swartz. “He just gets it,” she says. “And Kaitlyn is doing fantastic. She’s walking and trying hard to talk, and she certainly knows how to pull on the heart strings. With BC Children’s and Dr. Swartz on our side, we couldn’t ask for a better support team.”

BC Children’s Hospital treated over 81,000 children last year. Approximately 67 per cent of those children came from outside the City of Vancouver.

With rainbow flags waving, community members marched in Abbotsford’s first ever Fraser Valley Pride event on Saturday, drawing supportive honks from passing cars and waves from people walking by. About 500 people participated in the day’s events, leaving attendees and organizers pleased with the high level of support. Pride was organized by the Fraser Valley Youth Society (FVYS), an organization that runs a weekly drop-in to connect youth with a supportive LBGTQ (Lesbian Bisexual Gay Transgendered Queer) community. For the past five years, FVYS have held a “Walk Away From Homophobia,� but this year decided to change the walk into a pride event, which John Kuipers – program co-ordinator for FVYS – said was to create a more celebratory and positive attitude. They are here and they don’t want to be scared and oppressed.� The event started with a march beginning at 3 p.m. at the Matsqui Recreation Centre, and ending at the civic plaza. with the turnout. “I’m really happy, and a little surprised actually,� said Benz, who has been visiting FVYS for about four years. “I didn’t think there would be this many people.� The march was followed by a barbecue at the plaza, with speeches by community members, volunteers and youth. An unconditional ban on outdoor burning is in effect in all areas of Abbotsford, beginning June 1 and running until Sept. 30. Under the Fire Service Bylaw, the City of Abbotsford imposes an annual ban on all outdoor burning from June through September in order to reduce the potential for the uncontrolled spreading of fires and the resulting danger to lives and property. Under this bylaw, camp fires, backyard fire pits/burn barrels and portable wood-burning fireplaces are also banned throughout the year. Outdoor charcoal briquette or propane or natural gas barbeques are permitted both during and outside of the ban period, however, Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service recommends keeping children at least one metre away from these units to prevent the possibility of serious burns. During the fire ban there is a $500 fine for discarding burning substances (this includes cigarettes) and a $500 fine for any unauthorized burning. Persons who cause accidental fires may also be charged with the costs associated with fire suppression and/or face criminal charges. Agricultural or land clearing burning is allowed under permit during the months of September through May.

Five of the winners – Palermo, Moroz, Campbell, Vanwoerden and Moody – established new course records. The Run for Water also featured an “ultra marathon” for the second straight year which saw 17 runners complete a 56-kilometre course on Saturday. This year’s Run for Water maxed out its 2,800-runner capacity in the 5K, and nearly sold out all 1,200 available spots in the 10K. Baerg said the organizing committee will look at what can be done to expand capacity for 2014. “We have to contemplate the challenge of growth and see what we do for next year,” he said. “It’s a great problem to have.” Full race results are posted at runforwater.ca.

hen Pat and Mike Olson took their family on a trip to Disneyland, they thought their daughter Sarah’s exhaustion was due to the heat. Though she was constantly thirsty and complained that the water tasted strange, they didn’t think anything was wrong. They didn’t realize Sarah was showing symptoms of an autoimmune disease. When the symptoms came back a few months later in September 2011, along with dramatic weight loss, they took the 13-yearold Clayburn Middle School student to the hospital. After explaining her symptoms to a nurse, they were warned that Sarah might have Type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables the body to get energy from food. The onset of Type 1 diabetes is not caused by diet or lifestyle, and is often confused with Type 2 diabetes, also called adult-onset diabetes. Left untreated, diabetes can lead to liver disease, kidney failure or disease, blindness, nerve damage that can result in amputations, and even death. Sarah was diagnosed as diabetic and spent 10 days in hospital undergoing tests and repeatedly given needles. The Olsons were given binders full of information about managing Type 1 diabetes, but it was overwhelming. Sarah had to learn to manage her diabetes, beginning with four shot of insulin a day, plus poking her finger about 25 times daily to test her sugar levels. Sarah has since gone down to about 10 finger pokes a day and has switched to using an insulin pump – a device that releases the necessary amount of insulin into the body 24 hours a day through a catheter placed under the skin.

Sarah has learned to manage her diabetes, but is aware of the problems that arise from not taking care of her health. She must closely monitor the carbohydrate levels of everything she eats and drinks. As a competitive cheerleader who trains three times a week, Sarah must closely monitor her blood sugar, which can fluctuate during and after exercise. Due to many misconceptions about Type 1 diabetes, people don’t always understand Sarah’s specific needs. “So many people don’t understand diabetes and say, ‘What did you do to get that?’” said Mike. In order to learn more about Sarah’s disease and find support, the family became involved with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Sarah is now a youth ambassador for the organization, giving presentations to various groups, hoping to raise awareness and funds that will help researchers find a cure. “I want to tell people about the signs and symptoms just in case their child or a friend has been showing symptoms – they should go to a hospital.” Mike and Pat said watching Sarah manage her disease so well and her commitment to raising awareness has been amazing. Sarah will be raising money for JDRF research at the organization’s TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes. The Fraser Valley walk will be held in Abbotsford on June 9, at the Abbotsford Exhibition Park. Registration is at 11:30 a.m. and the walk will get underway at 2 p.m. The fundraising goal for the Fraser Valley walk is $242,000 and $1.08 million across B.C. Canada indicates that the demand for funding for the Canada Summer Jobs program “has exceeded the budget available” in the Abbotsford area. “I just went into a spiral,” Melnick said of the news. Although she has volunteers to assist at the centre, she said she requires at least one other person to be there fulltime from May to August – the centre’s busiest period. Melnick had already hired one person, anticipating that the funding would be approved. She said she will continue to keep her on, hoping to cover her pay through donations. “I’m going to keep her, even if I have to sell pencils on the street corner,” Melnick laughed. She hopes to meet with MP Ed Fast as soon as possible to ask for a review of the situation. The Run for Water has done it again! Last Sunday, new records for attendance and funds raised were set, as nearly 4,900 people generated $358,000 to create access to clean drinking water for people in Ethiopia, via the Canadian nonprofit agency HOPE International. Making this amazing achievement even more remarkable is the fact that the main events – the 5K, 10K, half marathon and full marathon – occurred on Sunday, which featured steady, soaking rain. Yet, the weather seemed to have deterred no one. Seniors, young parents with babies in strollers, throngs of children, students, and runners of all types and abilities braved the elements to run their respective races for a good cause. Ken Baerg, chair of the Run for Water organizing committee, said

afterward, “It’s just been so encouraging to see people rally around an event like this. They do it because they want to be part of something that’s bigger than themselves, and I think that’s such an admirable thing.” Once again, it shows what can be achieved by a determined group of organizers, a legion of volunteers, and several thousand inspired people. Even individuals who normally aren’t runners were heard to say they were compelled to run because of such “strong community motivation.” If you ran, you can feel very good about yourself, and your fellow participants. If you didn’t run, you might want to think about making a date for next year, and be part of new records that the Run for Water is bound to set.

Other Hand Heading up the Coquihalla last week, after hearing and reading dire warnings of impending flood threats in the Interior, and possibly here on the Lower Mainland, I was more than a little surprised so see the highway’s namesake river flowing green and well within its banks. The Fraser, on the other hand, was flowing fast and relatively high for this time of the year, laden with silt. I also noticed crossing the flatlands of Chilliwack that above about 4,000 feet on Mount Cheam and its sister peaks in the Cascade Range, there had been a fresh dump of snow overnight last Wednesday. When I achieved the Coquihalla summit, it was obvious why the river was running relatively low and clean. Not only is it still snowing in the mountains, there is a vast

quantity of snow in the upper reaches yet to begin spring melt. In fact, from the time I left the Valley until a pit stop for fuel in Merritt, the day temperature never left single digits, which means if we get a hot spell, rivers like the Coq will be soon spewing forth vast volumes to contribute to the already swollen Fraser. I don’t think there is major concern for flooding down here, but with all that mountain snow remaining I’d not be throwing caution to the wind. However, my foray into the hinterland was not to observe weather and snowpack, but to collect a horse of impeccable bloodlines to add to my seemingly never-ending, and in dispute with my always earnest intent to downsize, collection of equines. This magnificent Morgan was born and raised on a small isolated ranch high in the mountains above Merritt. Not only had he never left the place, he’d never been in a trailer, and certainly never experienced the noise and confusion of transport trucks and other vehicles rushing past on the ride back to the valley. But he rode very well, comforted per-

haps by the old, well-travelled mare I’d taken along to keep him calm and companied. The low elevation of the Fraser Valley, however, wasn’t his only surprise on arrival. As I unloaded this gentle giant and turned him loose in

Despite being outweighed by probably 900 pounds (the donkey is a ‘mini’) the first few minutes were all Stewie’s. Then the horse, who previously had

never experienced anything more harsh than a stiff grooming brush, discovered how effective a number of swift kicks can be to ward off a frightening and vicious attack. Fortunately, a truce occurred with a beaten and sweaty Stewie retreating to a corral for some R&R before, I assume, renewing his assault. That gave me the opportunity to lock the gate, and for the new horse to come to grips with his unwelcome arrival – something he is still recovering from, though he is making strides. Thankfully, with his strength and suddenly acquired ability to fight back, he averted any serious and potentially disastrous damage the donkey attempted to inflict. Stewie however, still honking his displeasure every now and then from the corral, has an imminent appointment with the vet who says, perhaps in six weeks or so after surgery, his testosterone levels should abate. An Abbotsford boy who has been growing out his hair since Sept. 2 and then shaved it all off has raised more than $2,800 for a children’s home and school in Haiti. Nicholas Foster, a Grade 5 student at MEI Elementary, had his hair shaved off during an event at the school on Friday. MEI Elementary holds a fundraiser every spring in support of Heart to Heart (H2H). These activities include things such as running events, car washes and silent auctions. Last summer, Nicholas decided he wanted to do something more, and he informed his parents of his plan. He has been fundraising since the beginning of the school year. Clothes For Pros event helps students

An event that helps young people acquire professional clothing takes place Wednesday, June 5 in Abbotsford. Clothes for Pros will be held at the Youth Keep Working Centre, #103 33255 South

Fraser Way. Two sessions will be offered – noon to 2 p.m. or 2 to 4 p.m. – with advance registration required by May 30. The free event is open to people aged 16 to 30. A wide selection of profes-

sional attire donated to the Clothes for Pros program will be available to participants. In addition, mini workshops by professionals in hair/makeup and fashion will be offered, as will interview tips.

Donations are still needed of professional clothing in good condition including dress shirts, dress pants, ties, dress shoes and blouses. They can be dropped off until May 30 at the Abbotsford Works building

Last Tuesday morning, nearly 500 brightly coloured balloons danced into the grey skies over west Abbotsford, their cheerful journey poetically intended to bring joy to a teenager fighting cancer for the third time. Josh, a 14-year-old student at St. John Brebeuf Secondary School, was first diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma in December 2009. When the tumour grew back under his cheekbone last year, the BC Lions participated in a fundraiser at the Catholic high school to offset the costs of Josh travelling to the United States for surgery and treatment. and the Abbotsford Airport to ensure the release would be environmentally friendly and safe for the aircraft not too far from the high school on Townline Road. “I really wanted to do something to bring a lift to Josh’s heart, his spirit. I wish I could take his cancer away, but I can’t,” said Ruth Ann Penner, whose colleagues from Corrections Canada volunteered to help fill the balloons with helium. “I want him to know that all of us are praying for him – that every one of those balloons is for him and for every other kid out there battling cancer.” Principal Ted Brennan said it was easy to agree to student and staff participation: “The school is extremely proud of Josh and his courage and the releasing of the balloons is a small sign to let him and his family know that we are with him on his difficult journey ahead.” Students were led in prayer for Josh and his family over the school sound system before taking the balloons from the school lobby outside. Josh, wearing his school uniform, was delighted by the elaborate surprise. When everyone released the balloons as a group, Josh stood smiling with his family, and children at the adjacent St. James and St. Ann’s elementary school gathered in the windows to watch. As the hundreds of balloons rose and drifted in defiance of the gathering storm clouds, everyone cheered and laughed. “All the prayers mean so much,” said Josh, smiling and holding the leash of his new dog named Hope. Conventional sports wisdom holds that it’s tougher to defend a championship than to win it in the first place. The Abbotsford Senior Panthers girls rugby team certainly found that maxim to be true, but nevertheless managed to claw their way to back-toback provincial AA titles on the weekend. The top-seeded Panthers opened the tournament at UBC’s Wolfson Fields with a 80-5 drubbing of Lillooet – a performance reminiscent of their dominant run to the 2012 championship, during which they out-scored their opponents by a cumulative total of 192-3. But it was tougher sledding from there. In the semifinals, Brentwood College of Mill Bay gave Abby Senior quite a scare, taking a 10-5 lead into halftime and extending it to 15-5 just after the break. But the Panthers dug in and dominated from that point, scoring 17 unanswered points en route to a 22-15 victory. “Brentwood came out blowing smoke out of their ears,” marveled Peter Cannon, who coaches the Panthers with Stephanie Doan and Matt Myers. “They put us back on our heels. “Nobody had put us under that kind of pressure, and it was a new experience for the girls. Once they figured out they could withstand that pressure, the whole momentum of the game changed.” In the final, the Panthers met Heritage Park of Mission in a rematch of the Fraser Valley title game. Abby Senior had won that game 37-12, but the Highlanders came charging out of the gates and opened an early 5-0 lead. The Panthers, though, absorbed their opponent’s best shot and dished out a few of their own, ultimately cruising to a 41-10 triumph. “We wore them down,” Cannon said. “Our style of play, we call it tight-tightwide, which is run the forwards at them, pull the defence in, and then take it wide and they’re chasing.”

Born on June 19, 1931, in Barendrecht, The Netherlands, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at home into the arms of Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior. Henk was a loving, caring, hardworking father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, always ready to witness about his Lord and Saviour. Henk is survived by his two daughters, Arina, and Janneke, and Janneke’s husband, Jim Thiessen, granddaughter Gabrielle and her husband Jon Wiebe; two great-grandchildren, Ayden and Aria. Henk also leaves brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews in Canada and The Netherlands. A celebration service of his NEW life will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 11:00 am at Ross Road Community Church, 3160 Ross Road, Abbotsford. After a brief stay in hospital, Mom passed away at the age of 93. She was predeceased by husband Bob in 1996 and grandson John in 2002. Survived by children; David (Pat) Mission BC, Harry (Shirley) Aldergrove BC, Linette (Gary McRae), Surrey BC, Judy (Frank Raimondo) Cobble Hill BC, Jim (Fiona) Cowichan Bay; twelve grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren. Born in Barrie, Ontario, she graduated as a Registered Nurse from Peterborough ON in 1943. In 1944 she married Robert James Machell. She moved to Matsqui BC to help out with the family farm after the flood of 1948. In 1968 she moved to Cobble Hill. Betty worked as a graduate Nurse at Cowichan Lodge from 1978 to 1985. After retiring, she was a member of the lodge auxiliary until moving to Langley, BC in 2006. In 2009, she returned to Cowichan Bay to live with her son, Jim and daughter-in-law Fiona where she stayed until her passing. The family wishes to thank all the staff on 2 West at the Cowichan District Hospital. Very special thanks to her primary home-caregiver, Donna; as well as Jane and Candace. Abbotsford lost a pioneer with the peaceful passing of Jessie Rebecca Keys (nee Mathers) on May 23 after a valiant fight with cancer. She leaves to mourn her loving family: daughter Rita (Mike), sons George (Deborah), Robert (Linda), and Russell (Vivian). Also survived by her loving grandchildren, Kirsten (Burke), Spencer (Veronica), Shantel (Otumara), Bryn (Holly), Matthew (Jennifer), Jenine (Jeremy), Joshua and Amelia. Jessie also leaves behind her brother Charlie, sister Olive, sister in-law Eda and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Jessie was predeceased by her devoted husband Herman in 2001, as well as sister Grace and brothers Art, Bob, and Don. Jessie was the youngest of seven children born to David and Jessie Mathers, on the family farm in Straiton on Sumas Mountain before the time of running water, indoor plumbing or central heat. She attended the oneroom Straiton School, Matsqui Middle for grade nine, and graduated from Philip Sheffield High School in 1943. During the war years Jessie worked at the Abbotsford Hotel (next to the Elks), Nelson’s Hardware and Sporting Goods (Paliotti’s) and the Teddy Bear Café (beneath Bikrim’s Yoga), in old Abbotsford. She loved spending her free time with her friends and attending the many area dances. Jessie married Herman in 1947 and soon settled on their four-acre egg production farm on Marshall Road. Jessie was an exceptional homemaker while also being an active partner working the farm. She also found time to be active in community service, specifically, the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary. In her retirement years she enjoyed world travel, lawn and alley bowling, gardening, and keeping up an active social life with family and friends. Researching family history was a passion and she was a founding member of the MSA Museum Society. Trinity Memorial United Church remained a central focus throughout her life both as a member and contributor. A Celebration of Jessie’s life will be held at Trinity Memorial United at 33737 George Ferguson Way at 1 pm, Friday May 31. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Arthritis Society of Canada, Cyrus Centre, Abbotsford Hospice or the charity of your choice.
